slowly closing in a number five hundred. You may have
noticed that this is Jeff not Matt. More on that
in just a second.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Beg me on, stayin. I'm humble gon.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
As bound park on don't one since running the gas scenes.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Right I said, this is episode number four sixteen.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Matt will be joining us later.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
He is going to do the shows to give us
the his and solicit set at the same time, it
tames to the show. Will be playing solo for the
review of Doctor Afrikaans number four, which is what.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
We have this week.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Matt is often main visiting his She's up there in
her first year of college, so he and the missus
went up there for a long weekend. He's on his
way back now. I actually just got back from Nashville
from a trip myself, So more about that maybe later on.
I'll talk to Matt about it a little bit on
the show. If anybody does want to hear about my trip,

(01:18):
you can just ask, But just suffice to say it
was fun. But as I said, I'm gonna do a
review real quick of doctor Afra chaas Agent number four.
Then I'll throw it to Matt for the news and
solicits for next week. I got a really cool cover
on this one. This is the This is sort of
becoming Star Wars like World's Finest. It's doctor Afra teaming

(01:39):
up with another character from the Star Wars universe. We've
seen her with Luke, We've seen her with Han Luke.
I loved that pairing, and I always loved that pairing.
This time she's paired with Shabakap And you know, Matt
and I have both been I won't say underwhelmed, but
certainly not overwhelmed. I personally, I think, have been whelmed
by this book because we you know, we all know
doctor AffA as one of my favorite characters in any

(02:01):
Star Wars ever, certainly my favorite character from the comics
who premiered in the comics. So I'm enjoying the spending
time with character. But these stories there's just there's just
not a lot going on with them. This one it's
called Turning Point, and not a lot goes on here,
just a recap of what's going on. I'll read you

(02:26):
what would be the crawl as it were, Following a
botched hiest, doctor Afro was brought into custody and recruited
to join Dagger daag R, a shadowy subdivision of the
New Republic. This team specializes a hanging down important and
dangerous archaeological artifacts, making After the perfect addition to the team.
Despite struggling with the deactivation of her electro tattoos who

(02:47):
the Kark could have sliced those, she successfully completed missions
with Luke Skywalker and Han Solo and I find herself
on a strange planet on an even stranger mission alongside
a familiar Wookie. And again this episode is This issue
is called Point. This was written by Cherish Chin. The
art is by Kira and McCown. Color artist is Michael Attier.

(03:08):
The letter is Virtual Calligraphy's Joe Karamanya ed Jakoor is
the cover artist. If I'm mispronouncing your name, I apologize.
Please let me know and I will correct it. We
have some variant covers by Annie Wu, one by Chris Sprouse,
Karl Story and Neiraje Menon a Revenge of the Sith
twentieth Anniversary edition, and one by David Lopez. The book

(03:28):
designer is Carlos lau logo design is by Jay Bowen.
Assistant editors are Mikey J. Basso and Drew Baumgartner. The
editor is mart Pinicia, editor in chief of CB Sebalski.
For Lucasfilm, we have senior editor Robert Simpson, Associate editor
Grace Ooris, Creative director Michael Siglane, Art director Troy Alders
for the story group Pablo Hidalgo, Matt Martin, Emily Shkukhani
and the creative arts manager, your friend of mine, Phil Showstack.

(03:52):
And as I mentioned, Afra is on this planet, on
Ty's an aisle on a planet, and she is there
to guard the they're their ruler who is who is
a boy and she's there with Chewbacca. They get awakened
apparently late for a meeting that they weren't they didn't

(04:13):
know about, and they're calling her Dagger. She says, I
have a name, and the guy say yeah, Abra or whatever,
and she says, that's doctor aberd to you. And so
of course the big reveal is that it's Chebacca, but
we already know it's Chebaca because we saw the cover
and we saw the solicit for last month and she
asked him if he could keep his room tidy. And
so they make their way up and we get, you know,
some some backstory. She has Chebacca if he has a

(04:36):
more vigorous brushing regimen because he's shedding everywhere, and uh,
then we get we get the back of the backstory
which I just read to you. But they're they're there
to uh they've been there for twelve days, uh, getting
ready for a coronation of the new king who I
mentioned is this uh, this small child and I love
that Afras is grumbling the whole way up and then

(04:57):
once she opens the door, good morning all she just
turns on the te arm again, which we've seen her
do here and there to varying degrees of success. And
of course the prints are soon to be King you know,
tells him you're late. And we learned that the Tyson
Isle roll the court convenes before Prince flot every morning
when sunlight first reaches the Grand Arch. Apparently the last
twelve days they didn't realize that. And so he wants

(05:19):
a security update and they basically say, we've we've had
a couple of threats, but most they were they were
The latest one is has zero credibility. It was a
toothless prank. Apparently some children thought a drawing in the
Prince was funny Prince flat as his name was funny,

(05:42):
and then asked what about the first letter we received,
the one that promised gulp an attempt on his Greatness's life?
And Afra says, what Chabac is in my collective experience
with the bounty hunter Carsantin is significant. As discussed, our
placement here is to put you at ease, and we
have seen zero evidence of his presence on tysoon, so
hopefully we're going to see black chrysantum, black k black chrysanthemum,

(06:02):
as I used.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
To call it.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
So, she says we Afria says she needs access and
she can't even finish because of the Prince says, I
don't want you poking around my things before my special day.
You and the Wookie patrol the perimeters of the palace today,
the outermost perimeter all day. This is after he's thrown
a fit because they haven't reminded him a fourth time
that he's going to have to do a second speech,
So now he has a day to write a speech.
I find it out that he doesn't have speech writers,

(06:26):
but you know whatever, it's a comic, and so after it,
puts on her big smile, says, have a pleasant morning.
Now we'll we'll not if I have any change in status,
and does she leases says, I can't tell you who
I'll miss more of that whiny browd or all the
power hungry leeches surrounding him. So they're out at this outpost,
way up high, looking around, and and again we're limit

(06:50):
Chewy tracks in a lot of sand. As we know
it gets everywhere. She says, says, you and I were
brought here for one real reason, our good friend Chrysanthum.
But I could have told you from the very beginning,
not not a day in his life would he ever come.
And she thinks she would never come after a bounty
this small. And of course, as she's saying that, they
get knocked off of their tower by black Chrysantin and

(07:12):
she asks him what he's doing there, and before he
can answer, he and Chewie just take off and we
get several pages of Chewy and Crysanthum fighting, which is fun,
but again it doesn't really advance the story or anything.
And after finally gets them to calm down, by splashing
them both with water, which I think is hilarious. And
they say something and she says, my shriewick accent is
just fine, thank you very much. So they're they're jawing

(07:34):
at her, and if we got more of this it
would be a lot more fun. But again, we spent one, two, three,
three full pages out of twenty with them just fighting,
and after trying to get them to calm down, and
so she says what she asked Carysanton. She goes, how

(07:54):
many credits could this possibly have been offered? And he
tells her that's actually pretty good and the Crown Jules,
that's for top preposterous. She's I'm not dropping my assignment, Meteor.
WI won't rip my arms if out if we let
you take the Prince flat, and so he leaves, but
she doesn't. She doesn't trust him to not come back
and do it, because she says, I don't even think

(08:17):
about double crossing us. I know all about your little
hiding places, and I will hunt you down, even the
super secret when I'm Batha Woui. And so then she
says this isn't good. And so that night they're talking
about you know who could have hired him and things
like that. She says, how exactly did he know exactly
where we were stationed? And she thinks of something and

(08:37):
she tells you, I need you to buy me five
minutes alone with the Prince tomorrow. So the next morning,
the Prince is being caravan and paraded down the streets
and nobody is cheering and h officas I guess most
Taysuonians aren't too thrilled about Prince Flood either, And she
sees him in his little bubble and then there's an
earth shattering kaboom. After looks at chew he says, it's

(08:59):
your time, ready to keep him busy? So there's chrysantin.
He and Chewie start fighting and people are getting involved
or saying what is this? Doctor? You said there were
no possible threats to the coronation. She says, yeah, I
was a little off on this one. She jumps into
the Prince's bubble and says, he says, what's going on there?
It looks like absolute madness and she says, you can

(09:19):
drop thet kid. You're the one who are Crysanton, aren't you?
And he doesn't even try to get out of it.
He goes, how did you know? She says, well, let's
just say I recognize the signs of sabotage. Chabaka and
I were very careful with our communications. No one besides
you and your court knew where we were stationed, and
your advisers are all too surprised by what's happening right now.
She says, why are you doing this? You think I failed?
Kidnapping will get you more attention by more sympathy from
your subjects. This kid has been a brat this whole time.

(09:42):
And he says, I really wanted to be kidnapped. I
don't want to be keen. Not surprising, I know that's
exactly where this was going. This is a well worn trope.
Not mad at it. I think it's fine, He says.
It might sound brash, but I had a plan. It
wasn't perfect, but I thought it through and it was
a chance to get off this island. I'm in a
cage here, being smothered by decisions that were made for
me before I was born. It's not like I ever

(10:02):
had a choice, you know. And Afford looks at her tattoos,
and she looks out and then she says, hey, Chewie,
let Carssanton through and she just gives him over to
Carsanton and Krissanton takes him by the hand. They doesn't
hurt him. She says, I'm sure your AfOR says, I'm
sure your major DOMO advisor DoD is more than ready
to step in on your behalf eager. Even this is

(10:22):
your chance. It's now or never, and you don't want
to wait for never. So he and Chrissanton go off
literally hand in hand and bag at Dagger's HQ, and
Nicadia Mediora is just laying into her, You've stabilized, You've
jeopardized years of stabilization efforts. This is a huge mass.
We should extend your sentence and Afa says they'll be fine.
His advisors will take over and govern it. And she says,
you don't know that says, you don't understand, Shelley. We

(10:44):
were on the same page, zero issues minus a blip
with the thing with the ritual and the guy on chorus.
Not is this self sabotaging quality of years I've heard
so much about And Afra just lays it out for
She says, we did have a good run, and I'm
proud of myself for not blowing this place up. But
this was never a mutually agreed upon decisionmailed me into
being a Dagger. I don't belong here. And she's got
a point. You know this is not a good fit

(11:04):
for her, and Meteor says, so what should I just
release you from your parole because you don't want to
do this anymore. After thinks about it, she does, I
need a name, she was, what name the name of
whatever top secret tech project you've got that's keeping me
out of my tattoos. I've tried every tactic at my disposal,
and we both know I'm good. So they must have
some kind of tech and I want my hands on it.
But most importantly, I want my freedom back. And Metior says,

(11:26):
you're not going to be happy, and After says, well,
it's in the way. I don't do something incredibly shady
to the Daggers anytime soon. So Metior looks out the
window she has. It's not a tech program that's locking
you out. It's not some covert defense forces project. It's
not even a team. It's one person. Their code name
is a Turner. It's Delan. And she says that, and
I'm thinking, is that's somebody I'm supposed to know. I
wish Matt was here so we could explain it to me.

(11:48):
But the very next page after looks down, she looks
up and says, you hired my Carking sister, and we
have a bubble that says next her Carkan sister, so
we know who she's teaming up with quote unquote in
our next issue. So again, fun issue, but I like
where they're going with it. But we're what we're four
issues in, and again not much has happened. We haven't

(12:10):
really learned any more about Afres character. I don't really
feel like she's grown. They're fun books, don't get me wrong.
I'm really enjoying this, and not everything has to be
earth shattering, So I'm looking forward to seeing what happens
in the next issue. This one was a lot of fun. Again,
I just I feel like it could have been told
in less pages, or that there could have been more
story in the pages that we had. So I will

(12:31):
take a short break and Matt will be back to
talk about the news and the solicits for next week,
and we will see you next week. Hopefully we'll both
be back by then and enjoy this break and then
enjoy Matt's news and solicits.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
Well, this stuff probably told Juey's going solo this week
because I am up in Maine visiting my daughter at
the University of Maine and was not able to join
this week's session. However, so that said, I did have
a couple of thoughts. News wise, Marvel's December solicits dropped,
Doctor Affra is still missing in action, and Jedi Knights

(13:10):
number ten was solicited and it kind of reads like
it's a final issue for that series. No real official
word yet, However, New York City Comic Con is coming
up next month. Lucasfilm Publishing does have a panel and
it's a full hour, and Mark Guggenheim is on that panel.
So here's what I think is going to happen. They're

(13:32):
going to hopefully announce a second season of Jedi Knights,
and then I have a feeling that Legacy of Vader
is probably going to end with issue number twelve, But
then they will turn around and do a second season
focusing on Kylo Ren as they lead up and into
the rise of Skywalker movie, so we will see. We
also got the Dark Horse's January Solicits, no great surprise,

(13:56):
just the one comic book, and that of course is
the Hyperspace story The Bad Batch Rogue Agents number two
of four. I have a feeling that we'll probably get
some details of some upcoming dark Horse books at the
Lucasfilm Publishing panel in New York City Comic Con. We
will see if that happens or not, although dark Horse,

(14:17):
as I understand it, at least based on n y
c c's roster, dark Horse is not there, but so
you know, we will see. But hopefully we will get
some uh some more solid information on what's going on
with Doctor Effort at Marble, and perhaps hopefully maybe we'll
see some more Doctor Effort books, maybe from dark Horse,

(14:38):
who knows, I don't know. Be really kind of cool though,
just you know, I'm all for that. So anyway, you
can check out the solicits for both on the Facebook
page and on the Blue Sky feed. And then of
course for next week, Our Love, Our Love Star Wars
comic is Star Wars.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
