Red hair, green eyes, a soft spot for someone of the Skywalker lineage? It's not Mara Jade, but Marvel's Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #9 certainly sets the stage for more Tava Ren, as she and Kylo Ren have it out aboard the Finalizer in more ways than one.

We're also joined by comic-book scribe Bryan Reheil to talk about Oct. 11's Lucasfilm Publishing panel at NYCC, where a pair of new comics were revealed, while the fate of others, including Doctor Aphra -- Chaos Agent, Jedi Knights and the aforementioned Legacy of Vader were not.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to Star Wars Splash Page Comics and Review.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
This is episode number four hundred and seventy two. Misasa.
Hi Jeff and Brian. Brian's here. Hi, Brian.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Stage made.

Speaker 4 (00:21):
I'm hunn park On. I don't want s's running the
gall scene.

Speaker 5 (00:41):
Guys.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Okay, man, I don't know that I did. Am I
being replaced? What was going on here?

Speaker 5 (00:48):
Well, just it's good that you're here because we should
talk about.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
And that's something is New York Comic I assume you're correct.

Speaker 5 (00:56):
Okay, there this weekend, think just.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Think, just think of this.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
This is what you're good for not reading emails.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Jeff, Yes, this is what I get for not getting emails. No,
we are joined by Brian Real. I'm pronouncing your name right,
aren't I?

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Brian?

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Yes, Real, I'm always I'm always paranoid that I'm doing
it wrong, even though I'm doing you for how long?
Comic book author extraordinary. If you have not read his
book and milk Run, you are doing yourself and the
comic book world of disservice.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
A big one, a b A big disservice.

Speaker 5 (01:26):
So thank you, guys, No problem.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
So yeah, No, Brian is here because he went to
New York Comic Con and it was awesome because I'm
sitting there at the post office on Saturday morning and
he texted me I met the Lucasfilm Publishing panel. I
was like, oh nuts, that's right, that's like in thirty minutes,
I need to go home. And thanks to Brian, who

(01:49):
was live texting me throughout the panel, we were able
to get the information as it as it was made available,
and you know, as panel, it was very interesting, kind
of light on comics, but the comic news we got
was pretty pretty cool. I thought to which, Brian, what

(02:11):
would you say was the highlight of the comic book
news out of that panel?

Speaker 5 (02:15):
I think for me was the announcement of the Jar
Jar Binks one shot written by Mark Guggenheim. Oh, I
should say co written by Mark Guggenheim and I'm ed Best.
And also we'll be starring jar Jar Binks and Keller
and Beck Nice.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
He's writing both voices at the same time.

Speaker 5 (02:37):
Yeah, it was very very cool to see the room
just you rupped for the cheers for that, because it's
just so nice to see everyone so on side with
I'm ed Best and just having him really flourished back
in the Star Wars universe very.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Much so that in that book it's a one shot
and it's dull out in February and uh, later that
day in Goggenheim's Legal Dispatch newsletter. Uh, you know, he
he was very upfront and you know saying that. You
know when it says co written quote, it really is.
We developed a story together, wrote individual scenes of the script,
and did passes on each other's material. Speaking for myself,

(03:20):
it was a dream collaboration end quote.

Speaker 5 (03:22):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
And yeah, it looks like it's gonna be a lot
of fun. And uh and and you know, I have
to say as somebody who was not a prequel trilogy kid,
because you know, I was already well into adulthood when
the prequels were released. Uh, I'm really glad to see this,
you know, it's it's been great to see sort of this. Uh.
I don't want to say rehabilitation, because there was nothing

(03:43):
wrong with jar Jar Binks to begin with, but it's
just great to see that jar Jar Binks's acceptance has
come full circle, you know, given given the pivotal role
that the character plays in the Sokka and.

Speaker 5 (03:57):
That was something fun to see Mark bring up about
how he's essentially key to getting the formation of the
Empire started when he voted to give Halpatine the emergency powers.
But he What Mark also said in the panel was
what you will see in this comic is a pivotal
role that he plays in the foundation of Rebellion as well,

(04:19):
which I thought was intriguing because you know, if you
read Chuck Wendingg's Aftermath trilogy, it's not really a good
end for jar Jar. So I'm hoping to see a
you know, at least another hype point for him.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
And before that, well, sorry, step away, my rice was
about to boil. Not an euphemism, now literally not an euphemism.
My rights was on the on the stove. So I just,
you know, I just think it's gonna be great fun

(04:55):
to have have that one shot and you know, for sure,
and I really hope that it's sort of somebody on
the Blue sky feet was great. You know, this is
the buddy cop team up that I've been dreaming of, so,
you know, so I think it'll be awesome.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
I really hope it starts out with with what's it,
what's the Jedi's name? Kellerin Beck despising jar Jar but
then coming to love him by the end of the series.
That's what I hope happens, we will say.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
And then, of course, uh, how was the reaction to
the announcement of you know, the High Republic phase more
book from dark Horse, Uh, the High Republic Adventures Pathfinder.

Speaker 5 (05:38):
That was probably a little bit more excitement than the
jar Jar series because it was I think the most
unexpected to hear because they were I don't know if
lamenting is the right word, the end of the High
Republic publishing initiative as it was, but we were everyone
in the room was sharing a like mournful feeling, and

(05:59):
Christian Bay who was there, really like open it back up.
And then we got the news that this series was dropping,
and it was like a collective gasp and followed by
a cheer and a lot of applause.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
That's excellent. I'm really pleased to hear that, because I mean,
this is I guess it's I guess it's you know,
I guess you know, I guess you know. Michael Siglane
has sort of described it as did dark Horse itself.
You know, it's a six issue mini series. It'll start
in March. It's written by George Mann, who's whose High
Republic chops are are very well known, very and then

(06:33):
of course it's going to be illustrated by artists part
of pratim Uh Jackus kumar Uh. And then of course
colors are going to be by Michael Attiyah and letters
are by common Craft. You know the the latter two
you know are are if you're reading any dark Horse
Star Wars comics, you know who they are. And it's
set about twenty years after Phase two of the High Republic.

(06:56):
And in the summary that just the quick summary is
is that a brand new team of Republic Pathfinders is
dispatched to a distant corner of the galaxy to investigate
the strange death of a Jedi master. But as the
team weighs into a web of mystery, they discover not
everything about this mission is as it seems, and the
team saved the day and saw the Jedi's mysterious demise.

(07:17):
Sounds like it, we'll see. I'm sure they give it
the old college try, and it looks like it's gonna
be a lot of fun again as well. I mean,
it's an all ages book, but that's the thing we discovered.
You know from Dark Horses Star Wars All Ages books
is that they are all ages, but they are not
all ages because they have got some very pervasive and
very engaging storytelling.

Speaker 5 (07:40):
Yeah, I think I'm definitely excited for this book out
of all of them, because Phase two is a personal
favorite of mine for the higher public. So I'm hoping
to see some characters that didn't really get a confirmed
visual appearance, such as I forget their names, but from
the two from Cataclysm and the other adult novel of

(08:04):
the End.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Oh, I know who you're talking about. But yeah, you're right,
I can't remember their name.

Speaker 5 (08:07):
Yes, from the two planets that were at war with
each other that I also forget. How I'm terrible terrible guests, No,
you're not.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Everyone should have been prepared. I should have been the
High Republic character guide.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
So yeah, I want to see hopefully some confirmed art
of what they look like. Hopefully there there in some form,
because it's you know, it's only been twenty years, so
people tend to live along time in Star Wars that
there's not some exterior influence on their bodies as we
see sometimes.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
Yeah, that's true, of course, I'm kind of hoping that
perhaps we'll see we'll get a taste seric cameo.

Speaker 5 (08:44):
Yeah, I mean, if you look at that cover, is
that Matty right?

Speaker 2 (08:50):
And it looks like it doesn't it? It really does.

Speaker 5 (08:53):
It's a washed cover, so you can't really tell if
it's her, and I can't tell from her markings if
it definitely is her. But only Twilight Paddle Lawn that
I can remember from that era, who could be older?
Is her? And then this looks like a Mary Allen
on the cover?

Speaker 2 (09:09):
It does, and it does.

Speaker 5 (09:12):
Yeah, I'm pretty I'm pretty excited about that, just because
you know, I thoroughly enjoyed the Higher Republic and I'm
very happy to see it continue on.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
Right, cool, Cool, I'm proportionally being quiet so nobody can
say I said anything that was wrong.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
And then of course what was the third new new one?
That was what Star Wars Visions so como?

Speaker 5 (09:34):
Oh, yes, the como was is about a survivor of
Order sixty six investigating rumors of a supposed droid's paradise,
said they are trying to reach Well, this.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Was This was cool because you know, you know, I
believe they had mentioned this what in twenty twenty three
or even twenty twenty two, I believe. So yeah, I'm
just saying that that this's something like this was being
worked on, but now we've got you know, because now
we've got a publication date. It's going to come out
in July. Uh so that looks like, you know, wow, okay, definitely,
And of course that's going to be done by Aichi

(10:07):
Shimuzu and Tomohiro shimo Guchi and just you know, based
on the cover, it looks pretty impressive, you know, because
and it looks like, you know, you know, the the
Jedi is wearing, it's almost like a combination of a
clone uh a clone trooper helmet, i'llah, you know, mixing

(10:28):
them with a with a maybe a foreshadowing of the
first Order to come.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
So yeah, it's very very cool. And I haven't dived
into a lot of the Star Wars manga that's happened recently,
but this being a Vision subtitle interests me. And you know,
Viz Media seems to be really turning out some good stories,
especially you know with the upcoming adaptation of Fall and Order.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Oh yeah, that's a good one.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Yeah, you know, there's one way to get me to
read manga. I think it's gonna be Star Wars.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
And then, of course, I guess what made news was
the news that was not made. There was really nothing
mentioned about Doctor after Chaos Agent or you know what's
going to go on with Jedi Knights after number ten
or Legacy Invader after number twelve.

Speaker 5 (11:15):
No, you know, it was cool getting the lowdown on
some upcoming issues for each of those sons Chaos Agent,
because they just didn't talk about that at all. A
little Wong was there in the audience. I didn't get
to see them or talk to them at all, but
they were there with some other publishing people in the

(11:36):
front row.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Cool. Cool, Yeah. And then you said you had a
nice chat with Ethan Sachs.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
I did.

Speaker 5 (11:43):
I went to his booth, an Artist Alli, just to
talk and because I didn't even realize it was going
to be there when I was going through the list
of stuff, I would have brought my Django Feed issues
for him to sign. And we were just jamming about that,
you know, hyping up how much I enjoyed that series.
And he was saying he has some plans for continuation.

(12:05):
He also is saying he has the idea the inklings
of a story he would like to do involving both
Django and Boba in one book. Oh cool with a
dueling perspective kind of which I think would be awesome.
Just a really rad guy, really cool to talk to,

(12:26):
and you could just tell he's, you know, to the core,
true fan and someone who knows his stuff. I really
just enjoyed picking his brain on, you know, Django's psychology
and Boba's and hearing him talk about during the panel itself,
his take for Boba and how this upcoming story has

(12:51):
in Black, White and.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Red number three Boba fed Black White and Red number three.

Speaker 5 (12:57):
About the bound I assume the bounty got away.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Yeah that's what. Yeah, that's what the based on the
preview from what it's looking like.

Speaker 5 (13:04):
Yeah, So when he spoke about it in the panel,
it made it just seem like the one that got away.
So you're like, ah, Bolla fed in love. But I'm like,
that's probably not what's going on here.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
I don't think Boba FET's capable of falling in love.

Speaker 5 (13:18):
You know, I'm ready to be surprised, But I think
you're right.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
Right. The battery's keeping it, you know, keeping it super
close to the best.

Speaker 5 (13:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
Well, cool so that you had fun. It was worthwhile.
It was enjoyable, obviously.

Speaker 5 (13:35):
It was definitely definitely worthwhile. I had a lot of fun.
I'm glad I got to go to the publishing panel.
I got to the con on Saturday around ten thirty
ish and rushed right up to the room. It was
one of the first ones in there to grab a
seat and just like get ready and compose myself. And

(13:56):
you know, I'm a big Star Wars novel reader as well,
so was fun hearing about all the upcoming announcements like
the Star Wars Legacy books about Ray and.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
Lea, and yeah, that looks really good.

Speaker 5 (14:09):
It does it does? I know people were like very
curious about the title, but I think I'm excited to
just like check out a Ray and Lea story. What
was there's a story coming? I think it's out soon
about Finn as a stormtrooper.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
Yeah, yeah, that's gonna be a good one.

Speaker 5 (14:31):
That's the author, Kwame. He was there and he's a
really cool guy, and I'm very excited to check out
that one. And you know, I also love art books
and visual guides. And they announced the Indoor Art book,
which I from Ingram's Books which I am very excited
to pick up.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
And what also the Acolyte as well.

Speaker 5 (14:52):
Yes, the Art of the Acolyte, and they showed some
pages on that, which makes you just even more mad
that they are not continuing the Aco Lite.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's true. And then of course I
guess the Coup de Gras was probably the the Doug Chang.
The cinematic legacies.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
That in the il M fifty years looks incredible. Yeah, yeah,
I don't think I brought that one of our If
you saw that one, that one, it's it looks really cool.
It's just a illustrated history of il M for the
last fifty years.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Oh nice, very nice. That's cool. That's good. And what
they also gave us some peaks of the previously announced
the Mandalorian Visual Guide too.

Speaker 5 (15:30):
No, yeah, yep, they showed that it showed some pages.
Very cool. I love what I saw that with the
like the Great Dragon. Yeah. Other than that, the con
was a great time. I recommend if you can get
to it. New York Comic CON's a great one that
goes to Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
I haven't been there since when they I think I
went up only for it was the year that they
announced the from a certain point of view, anthology okay man,
And they were holding the event off of the grounds,
and so you know, I signed up for that one nice.
Literally I took the train out that met everybody, and

(16:11):
then left.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
I'm actually I've actually heard the last several years a
lot of people preferred New York Comic Con to San
Diego because there is a little more emphasis on comics there.
Did you find that to be the case, Brian?

Speaker 2 (16:21):
I did you know?

Speaker 5 (16:22):
When I went down the artist aality, You know, it
was the busiest part I think of the convention score
apart from like you know, the main floor of all
the vendors, but the most focused amount of people was
down there.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
You know.

Speaker 5 (16:37):
Scott Snyder of DC Comics had a line all day
every day that he was there, and it was just
like all of artists aally was you know. There was
a little bit of like the independent artists, which was
good to see, but a lot of the rose which
is rose and rose of these comic book writers and
artists that I have on my shelf or like books

(16:58):
that I'm reading monthly, and it was just them havn't
their time to shine, which was cool to see, very nice.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
Awesome. Well, the next time you go again, let us
know in advance and I will send you I will
send you a battery pack for your phone.

Speaker 5 (17:12):
Oh yeah, definitely. I was doing some emergency charging it
some days, so that way can either live stream it
or just make sure I'm taking pictures and dropping them
to you as soon as fast as possible.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
Well, it was great, It worked out really well for
you doing that for us.

Speaker 1 (17:31):
Thank you, very awesome.

Speaker 5 (17:32):
Yeah, of course, you know, I had to let my
guys know what's up. All right, it's on the ground.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
All right. Well, thanks again for joining us, Brian, thanks
for having me. Oh anytime. You know that you can
come over anytime.

Speaker 5 (17:45):
So thanks.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
And again, if you're not reading Milk Run, you're doing
it wrong. That's all I'm gonna say.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
He's not lying. He's not lying. You know.

Speaker 5 (17:56):
If you're listening to this and you're interested, hit me
up on social media and I can help you.

Speaker 1 (18:02):
To read it.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
And where can where can they find you on the
social media?

Speaker 5 (18:05):
You can find me on you know, at Twitter, Blue
Sky and Instagram at the Real Underscore Deal. And that
is my last name, Reel, So it's our E H E.
I L Underscore deal. That's where I am everywhere, and yeah,
you can follow me there. I kind of just post

(18:28):
about a comic collection, silly everyday life and talk about
comics on Twitter, and yeah, it's fun to make new
friends that way.

Speaker 2 (18:37):
There, I can vouch for it. It's fun to read.

Speaker 5 (18:42):
And action.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
And in other news, just through a reminder that Friday,
October seventeenth is the last day of the dark Horse Comics.
The Art of Star Wars a New Hope, the manga
that's on Kickstarter, they are doing just fine. I think
their initials go was fifty thousand. I think they're like
three hundred and seventy five thousand now, so you know,
they definitely made it.

Speaker 1 (19:05):
Yeah, it's like those G I. Joe kickstarters that make
like one thousand and fifty one percent of their of
their goal.

Speaker 2 (19:12):
Yeah, it's kind of cool when you think about it.
So and then of course, uh, there's we got a
little more detail from screen Rant of all Places about
some more of the upcoming Marvel titles that are coming
to the web Tune app, and among those is going
to be the Darth Vader Black, White, and Red mini series,

(19:33):
you know, and again Webtune is a. It's a sort
of you know, it's a proprietary format. You know, it's
you know, it's vertical. You scroll down. There's some Star
Wars comics on there now from the you know, the
twenty fifteen Star Wars run, and it's a cool read.
We won't lie, you know, so definitely definitely worth checking out.
Last week mark the seventh year, the seventh anniversary of

(19:58):
the debut of Star Wars Resistance.

Speaker 5 (20:02):
And so.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
Seven years after the fact, I posted on the Facebook
page an article that I had pitched about Star Wars
Resistance to a certain website that focuses on Star Wars
that unfortunately, for some reason or another, was not used.

(20:27):
So and so, having sat on it for seven years,
I thought, well, you know, seven seventh anniversary, did the
seven years ago? So I put it on the Facebook page.
You know, if you want to give it a read
it and it's essentially it's an analysis or an examination
of racing speed and Star Wars Resistance and to what

(20:50):
extent that, you know, George Lucas's enjoyment of racing has
pervaded Star Wars from the very beginning, you know, land
speeders to X wings and tie fighters and you know,
of course pod racing as a great example, it would
have been nice to have, you know, had a much

(21:11):
wider audience. But you know, seven years on, I'm still
really proud of that thing.

Speaker 5 (21:16):
It was.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
It was really good.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
It was an odd show. Yeah, it was an It
was a hard sell too.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
But I you know, I still love that show. It's
still one of my favorite Star Wars properties, not just
not just animation, just Star Wars properties.

Speaker 1 (21:30):
It's one that I appreciated more than I liked it.
Just I just never connected with it. And that's me.
You know, that's not a failing of the show itself.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
It just wasn't for me. It's okay, you know, not
every Star Wars is going to be for every Star
Wars person. Absolutely, that's a okay. So other than that,
I think that's basically it. News wise.

Speaker 1 (21:50):
All right, we'll take a short break. Thanks again to
Brian Reel for being our eyes and ears and feet
on the ground at New York Comic Con. We'll be
back to discuss legacy of Vader. Issue nine. Heck, yeah, wow,
I did not realize we were nine issues into this book.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
I know we only got three more to go.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
Yeah, I keep saying, you know, the jury is still out,
and I'm like, well, maybe I should figure out if
I like it or not. I will say I liked
this issue, but I liked it for because of the
the new character that we meet, Tava Wren. Yeah, big
fan of this Tava Wren character.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Yeah, that's what was funny is you know, sort of
the lead up into this, you know, particularly what issue
number eight, when Tava made her debut, a lot of
people think it's it's mar Jane, it's Mark J. It's
Mark J. It's all right, everybody calm down.

Speaker 1 (22:42):
Every woman, not every not every not every badass Star
Wars woman is mar Jade.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Yeah. I mean, granted, you know, Tava Wren has red hair,
mar Jane has red hair. Taba Ren News is a lightsaber,
March Jade uses a lightsaber. But you know, I will
will not put it past the comics fan them for
Star Wars that they will will Mara Jade in the
new canon. It will happen.

Speaker 3 (23:08):
You know.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
It may not be today, may not be this month
or this year or next year, but I do think
it will happen. So yeah, anyway, Star Wars Legacy of
Vader number nine Reign of Kylo Rim Part nine written
by Charles soul Art is by Stefano RAFAELA color artist

(23:28):
is by Nolan Woodard. Letters are by Virtual Calligraphies Joe Karamania.
The main cover is by Derek Chu. It's a great cover,
by the way, It's not all the covers are great.
There is a Jedi Knights variant by Bingal, there is
a variant by god Tail, and then there is a
variant by Lionel Francis Hugh and Romulo Fojardo Jr. Carlos
Lau is our book designer. Michael J. Basso is our

(23:50):
assistant editor. Mark Ponincia, our editor in c. B. Sibalski
is the editor in chief for Lucasfilm. We have editor
Grace Harris. You're editor Robert Simpson. Creative director Michael Siglane,
Art director Troy Alders, Troy Troy Alders, creative art manager
Phil Showstacking. From the story group, We've got Pablo Hidalgo,

(24:11):
Matt Martin, and Emily Skokhani. So let's catch you up here. God,
this is you know. Legacy Invader is set between the
events of the Last Jedi and the rise of Skywalker.
Uh Kylo is uh, you know, he's processing a lot.
It's been a busy few weeks for you know. He's
he's killed his dad, he's almost killed his mom, He's

(24:33):
killed Snoke, he's uh, you know, you know, made a play.

Speaker 1 (24:38):
Been rejected. Yeah, been rejected by Ray and so.

Speaker 2 (24:41):
And you know now he's the uh the supreme leader
of the First Order. Uh yeah, and he's he was
trying to figure out what he can do, you know.
So he's you know, trying to pick up the legacy
Invader Vonnie over on most of far maybe playing him maybe,
I don't know, we'll find out. Meanwhile, the nine, it's
a Wren. We're sort of cast to the side, you know,

(25:05):
when when when Ben Solo uh decided you know what
I'm this is, this is my new gig. Now you
guys are history. Despite the fact he still kept the
name Kylo Wrenn even though he was no longer in
the Knights of Wren and you know and just basically
disposed of them like garbage, as he apparently is wont
to do so. Last issue, we met Tava Wren, who

(25:26):
had basically stepped in took over the Knights of Wren,
gave them renewed purpose.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
And when she learned about Kylo Wren, she sought him out,
and so she had flown to Wren's destroyer. And that's
where we ended issue number eight, and now we begin
issue number nine aboard the Finalizer, uh, and Tava is
in the landing landing Bay, kneeling down.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (25:53):
You know, ostensibly, you know, pledging fealty to Kylo, which
is not the case. And Kylo's like, you are Tava
a Knight of Wren. And of course, as he says this,
he ignites his lightsaber and proceeds to start attacking her. Uh.
And she's of course touched by the shadow. She's you know,
not been trained the way Ben Solo Kylo Wrenn has

(26:15):
and she's pretty much holding her own. But she's also uh,
you know, she can take take Kylo's attitude, but she
can dish it too it and she's just like easy, Now,
Kylo Ren, this doesn't happen. Well, I guess that's one
way to get to know each other. And so she
ignites her blade and they duel across the bay. You know,
they're they're you know, they're they're jumping up and off

(26:36):
and around the night Buzzard and you know, and and
talking at the same time. It's just you know, it's
it's very much a metaphor for a almost like hate sex.

Speaker 1 (26:48):
Right, yeah, no, absolutely, yeah, And they're they're just kind
of circling one another. And uh and like you said,
she's she's, she's giving him a run for his money,
but at the end of the day, he does get
the better of her.

Speaker 2 (27:00):
Yeah, but you know it's funny that he's he's he
wants to you know, because like there's a scene in here,
like you know, one of the First Order sub commanders,
you know, tells the storm troopers take her down, and
you know she turns with her with her luminous green
eyes off blast and you know, Kylo's like no and
just force waves this entire platoon of First Order Stormtroopers,

(27:21):
you know, up against the wall. Do not leave this
to me and Thamas just like this is more fun
than you've had an ages, isn't it. And of course
that immediately spurs a flashback to he and Ray killing
all of Snoke's guards, which again, uh, you know, was
the finest scene involving choreography in a movie, second only

(27:45):
through the dirt Bike dancing in rat Yes, but then
you know, Kylo just says, enough, what did you think
you would achieve by coming here? The Knights of bring
me nothing to me? Oh? Is that right? And why
do you still carry their name? Kylo Wrinn? They're in
awe of you, viccrul Cardo in the others autit terrified personally,

(28:09):
and she's saying, as she's saying that she's leaping down
toward him with blade outstretched, I don't see it.

Speaker 1 (28:16):
And he's like, oh yeah, and pushes her back. Do
you see it now? As he grabs her a saber.

Speaker 2 (28:22):
Not just grabs her saber, but I mean force grabs it.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
So you know, And then he's yeah, he's and he's
got her, he's got her cross, He got him crossed
around her neck.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
And I just hear Adam Driver's voice in reading every
bit of dialogue here, you know, yeah, do you see
it now?

Speaker 1 (28:38):
And she she makes a good point to him, though
she goes the only things you and I only the
things only you and I can talk about the things
I've learned. Who else in your life can have these
conversations with you? And I love this image of his
of his face lit up by the sabers, and he says,
remember how easy this was for me, and and and
unignites him, both extinguishes them both, and she says, oh,

(28:59):
I don't think I'll ever forget you, Kylo Wren.

Speaker 2 (29:04):
And then immediately, just you know, within a nanosecond, you know,
you know, she goes from you know, anger and resentment
to hey, now, what's to eat? Anything to eat aboard
this monstrosity?

Speaker 1 (29:15):
A woman after my own heart?

Speaker 2 (29:17):
Seriously so and so we cut to the two of them,
you know, they're having supper, and you know, and then
Kylo I, you know, I can't tell if Kylo is
just making small talk or if he's genuinely interested.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
I think he's genuinely interested. I don't think Kylo. I
don't think Kylo is capable of small talk.

Speaker 2 (29:33):
Okay, that's a very valid point. She's like, well, he's like, well,
where are the other Knights of Rent? Oh they're around.
They just didn't want to come. Humh. Smarter than I'd
given them credit for. And Tamas says, well, before we
talk about anything else, there's something you should know. I'm
not just Tava, I'm Tava Wren. And Kylo's is like
you took control of that band of fools. I'm curious

(29:53):
as to how, but more interested in why. I'm surprised
they're still alive. When I left them, they were terrified,
little Trettes scurrying away. And then Tom was just you know, well,
how do I get the Knights of Ren? Simple enough?
You treated them like garbage. I treated them like a prize.
And we get a great flashback, you know, we see
what's happened to them. Uh, you know, you know cool too.

Speaker 1 (30:16):
I really like this, Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
Because it's almost like a it's not so much a
CPIA wash, but it's a very muted wash over these pages,
you know, to give us, you know, to let us
know that this is a flashback, and we see the
Knights of Ren. You know, they're in a cave. There's
a storm outside, there's lightning, you know, and she's saying,
you know, look, they stuck together after you left. You know,
it's that's what they'd always done, and that's all they

(30:38):
knew how to do. But they were shattered, and they
took on a job as a muscle for a gang
leader named but Dot. Can you imagine it? The Knights
of Wren, all that history legacy shaking down shot.

Speaker 1 (30:48):
Back keepers for protection money. And you know you were
talking about this being a wash. You know what this
reminds me of. But this reminds me of the look
of the Hammer horror films of the sixties and seventies.

Speaker 2 (30:58):
Yeah, that's a great observation.

Speaker 1 (31:01):
It's the vibrant colors that are still muted. Vibrant but muted,
is what it reminded me of. And of course, of
course it's October, so I'm all into spooky season anyway.

Speaker 2 (31:11):
Heck, yeah, I guess it's my favorite time of the year.

Speaker 1 (31:15):
Just watched Black Sabbath for the first time a couple
of weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
Actually nice.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
Yeah, speaking of a Halloween movies, if you haven't seen it,
Mario Baba anthology film featuring Boris Karloff, of all people,
it's great. Quentin Tarantino. Quentin, it was in Quentin Tarantino
was his biggest inspiration for pulp fiction. He wanted to
do for the crime movie what Black Sabbath did for
the horror film. There's that, But anyway, I digest. Yeah,

(31:41):
they're working for this. This dude called ba Dot and
she said she was running with Badatu, one of his
enforcers did the occasional assassination form, which I would believe.
And it reminds she reminded me more of ours sing
than Maraa Jade.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
Honestly, Okay, I could see that. Is it just because
of the long gun.

Speaker 1 (31:59):
Though a gun and and the gun had just her attitude. Uh,
kind of a cross between Rising and Who's the Night
sister Massage Ventress.

Speaker 2 (32:10):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (32:10):
Yeah, can arizing of those two more so than Maura Jade. Uh,
she said. And she she says, you know I could
touch the shadow. I didn't. I didn't advertise it, but
I could touch it. It came in handy on the job.
That's also how I recognized the Knights, said, So when
I heard Trudge and talking about Rent, I knew what
he meant. I knew what he meant. Who they had
to be, she said. I didn't approach him at first
thought maybe they'd kill me if they were keeping a
little profile. There had to be a reason. But then

(32:32):
one day the Knight screwed up a job, killed the
wrong guy, and but DOT was going to execute them,
make an example of them. She says, that didn't seem right.
It seemed to like a waste I wanted better for
them and for myself. I went to them and said
I'd set them free if I could run with their crew.
They were happy to let me free, let me free them,
but if I wanted to join, well, the Knights have
a code. They needed what they called a good death.

(32:53):
So I killed. I killed everyone but dad, these people,
all of them. I don't know if that was the
kind of good death they were talking about, but it
was good enough. That's what I love. She's like, she
just tosses things off, and she says, I took control,
maybe because they wanted me to, maybe because they didn't care.
They didn't care about much of anything. I didn't know
why not at first, but eventually I got it out
of them, and here we are. And he says, you

(33:15):
gave me the how, not the why. You came here
alone and for what you said you were in my service?
How can you serve me? She goes, oh, that was
a lie. My original plan was to kill you. I
was gonna come here, find a way and do your
good graces and pick my moment?

Speaker 3 (33:26):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (33:26):
Is that all you think that would have worked? And
she said, please, you're fascinated with me. He's not wrong
and yeah, she's absolutely right, because I could have killed
you eventually, whether you believe me or not, I would
have gone back to the other Nights and told them
their bogey man was dead, given them a very good death,
you might say, But that was before I met you.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
And I would like to point out just right here now,
I don't know who she's based on, but I gotta
swear that Stefano has uh has been listening to a
lot of Billie Eilish lately.

Speaker 1 (33:56):
It wouldn't surprise me. Yeah, absolutely, I can see that.
I can definite only see that if she had, if
she had a blonde streak in the front of her hair,
I'd say, you're absolutely right, I'd say one hundred percent.
But she says, I've touched you through the shadow. I'm
sure you've done the same to me. I know you
in a way only people like us can know each other.
And he says, in who am I exactly? She says,
sure as hell. Isn't all this fancy business or your

(34:17):
big scary war machines, Supreme Leader, Please, you're a wild man,
Kylo Wrenn. You're a freeman, and yet you live in
this cage. You have the key and still you stay.
It's careful what you're next, what you say next. You're
in the cage with me. You could have killed me. Yeah, yeah,
I'm not stuck in here with you. You're stuck in
here with me. Yep, says you could have killed me,

(34:39):
but you didn't. Why, says, because you miss this. The nights,
the freedom, they're waiting for you. You know, you just
have to take them. She miss can tell him, this
is not what you want. And I think she's right
because I was thinking when this started, like, this is
a guy who has achieved everything he set out to achieve,
and he's still not satisfied. How miserable a life must

(35:00):
to be, to constantly be looking for the next big thing,
your next conquest, instead of just being happy with what
you've got, you know? And I think she's right. I
think it's because this is not where he's supposed to be.
This is not who he is, it's who he's trying
to be. No, she said, And she says, you want
something else, someone else. The need wrings out from you.

(35:22):
Who do you want to be? That's what I want
to know? And she leans in to kiss him and goes,
is this it? And kisses him hard and he pushes
her away. He says, it's a Supreme Leader. There's an
intruder aboard the ship. Human woman, red hair, black clothing,
basically just calls her out and says shoot on side.
Blaster sets killed. There's no need to take her alive. Yes,
Supreme Leader orders acknowledged, and he says that is who

(35:44):
I am, exactly who I want to be. And she said, yes, yeah,
but very clear, I'm not buying it.

Speaker 2 (35:53):
I'm not buying it. No.

Speaker 1 (35:54):
I think he's just trying to prove a point to
himself as well as to her.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Yeah, even though it's a point that hen and he
knows is not right. Right, it's demonstrably false.

Speaker 1 (36:03):
So she force grabs her her lightsaber runs shes, I'm
not wrong about everything that's I'm not wrong. Everything I
said about you is true, and he picks up an
orange and as she's running, she she's she's making she's
she's getting through, and finally there's an explosion and she says,
it'll take more than that. And she looks and she

(36:23):
sees basically a full battalion and a ship, and one
of this troopers says, on my mark all at once
too many for her to block. I want nothing left,
and she says all right. Tava closes her eyes for
the Shadow for the Wren, and she force pushes them
all into this this ship. And then is it this

(36:43):
is the ship that she jumps on right to escape. Yeah,
that's the ship she brought.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
That's the night Buzzer, that's what that's that's the ship
we saw in the Return of the Return in the
Rise of Skywalker.

Speaker 1 (36:53):
Right, okay, remember now, and so makes her way out
and then, uh, Hucks is there, telling Ren, you know
we have target lock, Honor give the command, will blast
it into Adams and he just watches it go. His
enemy ship has entered hyperspace, and Hucks has target lost.
He's target lost. The the commander this has target lost,
and Hucks is just kind of staring at Wren, who's

(37:15):
staring out into space.

Speaker 2 (37:17):
He's like, wait, what what is going on here? What
is it with you and and and and and and
women with lightsabers? So so yeah, so it uh leaves
an interesting thread open for something later, obviously, which means
Tama Wren is you know, obviously we know something happens

(37:39):
because you know, he's got the Knights of Wren back
in the Rise of Skywalker, uh, you know, and has
assumed a control of the group again, although you know,
they did obviously at the end of the Rise of
Skywalker turn against him, you know, thanks to Palpatine. But
Tava is still out there, and so that's another interesting

(38:00):
little thread that hopefully we will get to explore one
day as to what's going on with Tava, you know,
and what might that mean for Ray.

Speaker 1 (38:11):
I hope, I hope we get more of this character, because,
like I said, I'm a big fan.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
Of what I like the character. I think the character
is really cool, you know, it's you know it, Charles
Soul has a real difficult problem and that he is
incapable of writing inconsequential and shallow characters, right. He just
doesn't really know how to do it. Every character is
he's pretty much created in any of his books, you know,

(38:35):
whether their ip or you know, create her own. Yeah.
I don't think he's ever had a bad character. And
this character, this Tava, this Tava Wren, you know, I
just I like her, want to know more about her,
and I'm really genuinely curious as does you know what's

(38:56):
going to become of her, so hopefully we'll find you.
The door is open for that though.

Speaker 1 (39:02):
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, Yeah, right, I said, I enjoyed this
one a lot. I like the dialogue, I like the
conversation between the two of them, and I love this
new character. So I recommend on this one excellent. All Right,
we'll take another short break. We'll be back to discuss
next week's books.

Speaker 2 (39:18):
Excellent, look forward to that.

Speaker 1 (39:23):
Okay, Matt. If I'm not mistaken, we have two books
to review next week and another one maybe coming out
that we're now two more that we're not going to
talk about.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
Oh, three more, three more.

Speaker 1 (39:33):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (39:34):
It's a big week for Star Wars comics. Tuesday, October
twenty First from Marvel the Rise of Skywalker Adaptation Trade,
which collects that five issue mini series. We get Star
Wars Legends the Old Republic Old Republic Omnibus Volume two,
and then from dark Horse we get Star Wars Hyperspace
Stories a Library Edition, which a hardcover collecting the twelve

(39:56):
issue Hyperspace Stories series. Very about that one, and then
on Wednesday the books we will be discussing. From dark Horse,
we get Tales from the Nightlands, number two of three. Yeah,
that's gonna be fun because this is the issue that's
set during the original Trilogy era. And then we get
Jedi Nights number eight, which is the big issue because

(40:17):
this is the one that is basically told from the
point of view of a Jedi youngling, you know, from
the time they are picked up by the Jedi to
the time that they ignite the Lightsaber for the first
time at the temple and Chorussant Oh wow, will Yeah,
it's gonna be really good. It's gonna be enjoyed, and
it's gonna it's gonna feature coloring back as well. So okay, yeah,

(40:40):
it's gonna be a lot of fun.

Speaker 4 (40:42):
All right.

Speaker 1 (40:42):
We'll be back next week to discuss that and anything
else that happens between now and then. And I would
like to make a special announcement if I may, of course,
give more information as the time comes closer, but as
we're in the middle of October, first day of December,
be on the lookout for an Audio Advent calendar for
Marvin Doug Media. That's all I'm gonna say. But you're
gonna have You're gonna have an episode coming every day

(41:02):
of December from December first through December twenty fifth, Pam
and I are reviewing all of the Rank and Bass
Christmas specials as well as filling in the remainder of
the month with just some some conversation holiday conversation topics
for everybody to enjoy. It something I've always wanted to do,
and I have a partner who will yes and every
one of my silly ideas, so we were doing it.

(41:23):
More to come just watch watch this space for more information.

Speaker 2 (41:27):
I really can't wait to listen to this because you know,
you know, Jeff has been telling me about it from
you know, basically the time they came up with the
idea to you know, the actual recording, and it's just
then the excitement is palpable.

Speaker 1 (41:38):
It's we've been having a ball. We've been having a
ball doing it, so uh and we're we're working on
ideas for next year. Maybe do a Halloween Advent calendar.

Speaker 2 (41:46):
So that'll be cool. It'd be a lot of fun. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (41:48):
So all right, Well, we'll be back next week to
discuss that and hopefully I'll have some more information for
you about the Audio Advent calendar.

Speaker 2 (41:54):
Yay.

Speaker 1 (41:55):
Until then. For Star Wars flash Page, I am Jess.

Speaker 2 (41:58):
