Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to Star Wars Splash Page Comics in review.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
This is episode number four hundred and seventy four. Is
it the last episode? No, it's not, of course not
Hi Jeff, how are you big?
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Stage made?
Speaker 3 (00:20):
I'm humping gonna as Beau park On. I don't want
since running the gas scenes.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
I'm good, Matt, and uh, I have a confession to
make it there is like every other week. I really
I have to stop myself as a being the intro
because I keep wanting to say, you're listening to comics
with Knobe even though it's been it's been years years. Yeah,
not on a decade. I would imagine uh to say that,
(00:58):
but no, uh yeah, hopefully hopefully not our last, not
our last podcast. How are you?
Speaker 2 (01:05):
I'm well? Thanks? How are you good?
Speaker 1 (01:07):
I'm okay, I'm just tired. It's Monday and I'm tired.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yeah, I know the feeling. I know it really well,
it's been it's been an eventful Monday for me. Let's see,
the heater is out, and of course now it's starting
to get cold up here in the Commonwealth. So and
then my wife's car is apparently either having an alternator
issue or a transmission issue, So I guess I'll find
out on Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
So oh good, that'll be an expensive and expensive clue
that you'll come upon.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, either way, it's going to be a very expensive week.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
So and it's Halloween too, so you got to you
gotta stock up on Halloween candy.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
I have already done that. I have five bags. I'm
ready to go.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
I have one bag because I live in an apartment
and we've only ever had people show up twice. But
our porch light has gone out, so I'm hoping that
that means nobody will show up. And I have all
these recent peanut butter cups to myself.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Nice, very nice.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Here's hoping indeed.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Indeed.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
So we do have two books to discuss this week.
We have Bubba Fett, Black, White and Red, number two
in Doctor africass Agent number five of five apparently from
the sound of things. Oh, I don't know, but man,
what kind of news that we got to discuss this week?
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Well, last week with solicits for Marvel for January, and
there's only three books coming from Marble, there's on Solo
Hut for the Falcon number five of five. There is,
of course, it looks like a Legacy of Vader number twelve,
which seems like it might be ending there, you know,
(02:38):
at least for now. And then Star Wars number nine
of ten. Uh, and that was it.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
And that's for for which month, for which month? For January,
for January, Okay, yeah, they're taking the New year off.
Yeah yeah, so maybe maybe maybe they'll maybe they'll change
the Legacy of Vader. Maybe they'll swap that out for
this new story called the Hunt for Ben Solo that
I've been hearing about.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
That'd be pretty cool idea. That Oh my gosh, that
just that was shocking to me. I know, you know,
goodness gracious, and what a great coop for Jake, Jake
Coyle over at the AP. Jake's a good guy. I
was glad to see him get that kind of story.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
But uh, And if if you had told me Steven
Soderberg wanted to make a Star Wars movie and Disney
wouldn't let him, I would not have believed you, because
who doesn't want to work with Steven Soderbergh.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Oh my god, dude. Apparently it got even deeper than that, Like,
you know, they had the script and everything.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Yeah, it was ready. They were ready to go.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
And apparently they had already started doing something like like
pre shooting hiring, and then you know, then Disney put
the kaibosh on it. I was like, what, oh my.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
God, Yeah, I don't I don't know, I don't get it.
I don't get it.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
Well, you know, but here's here's here's the absolute fact. Though.
You know, if you like Ben Solo slash Kylo Red,
you've got lots of great comic stories to read. So
true and mostly to Charles soul so true.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
And speaking of Soderberg, there is a was an Ocean's
eleven reference in The Doctor after a book this week,
I'll reveal that as we go, we go through it.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
I'm looking forward to that. And other than that, the
only other real news was February, we only have one
book from dark Horse, and that's going to be Hyperspace Stories.
The Bad Batch Rogue Agents, number three of four.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Seems like it's been for ever since we got the
last issue.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
It has it has okay, you know, And if you'll
check the schedule in the in the show notes, you'll
find that a lot of dark Horse titles have been
pushed back a week or two. You're used to that.
That is not uncommon. It happens, so you know, you know. However, however,
the grievous original graphic novel is still holding steady at
March seventeenth, you know, about three and a half, four
(04:38):
months after it was supposed to be released.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
So we'll see if that happens. And I'll apologize if
anybody can hear Margo is on my lap in grooming
me to within an inch of my life, and there's
nothing I can do about it. Literally, I cannot stop her.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
You needed that for sure.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Yeah, that's all right. Well then why don't we go
ahead and just dive into Bubba Fett Black White and Red.
Number two?
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Heck yeah, heck yeah, this is number two. It's called
Piper's Pay. It's written by a Salady documented, which is
a heck of a coup.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Saladi is an impressive writer. H No matter what the
medium is, art is by a familiar face if you're
a Star Wars comics Readerslaura mo and Rosanas. Letters by
virtual calligraphies Joe Karamanya. The main cover is by Derek Chu.
There are various won by Kyle Hotson, Rachelle Rosenberg, one
by Miguel Mercado. And one by scan the book.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Probably loved them. If i'd seen them, you've seen them.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
If you all get you look at the feed. I
put him on, I put him out there. Carlos Law
is the book designer. Mikey J. Basso is the assistant editor.
Mark Pinzzia is the editor. Ceb Sebalski is the editor
in chief. And for Lucasfilm we have Grace Rris, Editor,
great's got a promotion. Congratulations Grace Very. Robert Simpson the
senior editor, Michael Siglain the creative director, Troy Alders the
(05:56):
art director, Phil Shostack the creative art manager. And from
the lou This Film Story Group, we've got Pablo Hodalgo,
Matt Martin, and Emily Scuccati. So this is a one
and doone story. It's set on Madon. It's done in black,
white and red, and uh, it's a it's got a
nice pace to it, steady clip.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
And you know, Boba Fett gets his man.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
It's another story of Fete getting his man.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Yeah, but he gets him alive. But it's also it's
a deeper context into that and that's being you know,
basically Samu the scurier who is being pursued by Boba
Fett as well as some other folks who are, shall
we say, less than savory. But also it also shows
a sight of stars Star Wars we don't really see
(06:41):
it often, and that Samu has a son and he's
trying to do right by his son and set a
good example for his son.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
And he's got a sister who you know, loves her
brother and doesn't want him to die, but realizes that
if he doesn't change his ways, he's going to die.
And to change his ways, he's got to pay the piper.
Hence Piper's pay the title. And it's very cleverly done. Uh,
it's visually just stunning. I mean, if you go straight
(07:13):
to page what digital page three, you know where we
get you know, you know, we see, you know, we
we have seen Samu talking to a death Star droid
named c z uh.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
You know.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
And and and I love the dialogue. I love the
way this that you know, this desdroid his programmed, you know,
because it's very just, you know, very down to earth.
So you know, somebody you'd meet going walking through Hoboken
on a Friday night, you know you're looking over shou.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Yeah, very much does sound like it sound like just
a dude, yeah, instead of a droid.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
You know. And he looks at Samone, who you're running
from this time, and Samon turns around the looks and
you turn the page and we get this full page
spread of you know, slave one just coming in low
with the guns pointed right at him, and uh, you know,
it's just it's just a heck of an image here.
Ramona is just you know, he's on fire and on
fire with this issue. Uh. And I like how Samon
is dressed because he you know, he kind of looks
(08:03):
like he's wearing it's almost like he almost looks like he's,
you know, part of Assassin's Creed the video game, so right,
you know, especially I'm loving his his tri corner Tri
corner hat there. You know, it's very revolutionary war era
but h so, yeah, you know, it's essentially this is
the story is told from the point of Samu. Uh,
you know, I gotta run, gotta run, I gotta go,
(08:24):
gotta go, gotta go, and you know, and but you know,
Boba Fett comes in. He's larger than life, reputation precedes him,
but he's also you know, he's very business like and
it does a matter of you, it's very matter of fact.
Especially when he's talking to Sam. She goes, look, bring
him in alive, take him to the planet where he will,
you know, go to prison and not be executed. But
(08:46):
I'll tell you where he is. And he goes deal.
And you know, here's the thing about Buffet. He makes
a deal, he'll he'll honor it, you know, straight up,
you know, you know, and we see that in this issue.
It's it's it's it's emphasizing because one guy is trying to,
you know, get him to give up the bounty. You know, look,
I'll pay you more, you know, you know, I'll double
your bounty. Nope, I had a deal, got a deal,
got to honor it.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
So I love We didn't mention it, but I love
digital page four when slave one appears, Well yeah, no,
we just yeah, that's the one.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
I'm interesting because.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
Yeah, yeah, but I'm saying I'm with you on that one.
I absolutely love that one. And the thing that that
struck me about this book is it's I really love
the story, and I love the art and everything, but
it's it's playing fast and loose with the black, white,
and red because there's a lot more red, but in
all sorts of shades here. I don't mind it. They're
(09:44):
not cheating, but I do think that the shading is
a little a little less sparse than we've seen before,
which is fine. I love that they're finding ways to
work within the confines of the book or the concept.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
And here's the thing though, is I think probably in
like two or three years, they'll take all of these
Star Wars black white and red titles and probably released
released them as colored, colorized versions. No, I you know,
I can see them doing it. Yeah, you're just you know,
because you know it'll to the diehard. But yeah, it is,
it's easy money. But there is something about the scope
(10:21):
of this that's just uh, you know, and the way
it's done, you know, and and the way it's been
done with Darth Vader and the way it was done
with Darth Maul. Is it's just this, it's just it's
sort of raises the steaks. Uh, you know, it's you know,
because it's it's you know, it's essentially you know, we're
not for the red. It's a monochromatic. It's you know,
it's like reading a black and white comic book. And
(10:44):
then the red I think offers up some really nice
I don't want to say detail our influence, but just
sort of this overall permeation, uh, you know, of everything
that you know, makes it seem like, all right, I'm
reading an event story here. So and you know, and
it's very effective. You know, there's one scene I think
(11:06):
it's maybe digital page eight or nine where Samo is
you know in this in in the street mark you know,
in the market, and the market you know, it's it's
an open air market, but it's covered by by by
you know, not maybe not canvas but tarps, but you know, see,
basically stuff to block out the sun and keep people cool.
And you know, he looks up and there's Boba Fett
flying high watching him and tracking him, so you know,
(11:27):
then then ducking into the market to go after him.
So and just it's it's just it's a good story.
Uh and and just you know it just you know,
I like, I like I thought, you know, I like
like I solid and has has written Boba Fett here.
You know, it's just you know, you know, he's not
you know, he's still that he's still taciturned in the
(11:48):
quiet type but he's not quite as menacing though he is.
Does that makes.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
Sense, Yeah, there's not as much there's not as much
fear at his name in this issue, which I thought
was interesting, and.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
So there's a lot of respect though, there's a massive
amount of respect.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
But but there are also people who don't know who
he is. Somebody mentioned you called said, oh, a Mandalorian,
mentions it, you know, calls him a Mandalorian, and and
I also loved that, uh he finally goes to the
wrong person first because the uh, the hollow has been
uh has been uh doctored, and that's and that's where yeah,
(12:31):
that's where it was. The droid they called him, You
damn a Mandalorian. He really can hustle anyone.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
He really can can't. Yeah, but it's good. It's a
good book. It's a good, solid story. And you know,
I won't lie. I will get this when they released
this as the Treasury Edition, just because it's so visually
appealing and just because you know, I just I like
the different pacing of the story.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Yeah. Well, and you want to, you know, you want
to support the Marvel taking chances and doing something different.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Well, yeah, and you, as we've said before, you know,
they've had great success with their superhero books, you know,
the black, white and blood, right, and you know, just
and you know, and again, as I've said before, I
didn't think you could actually do this, uh you know,
with Boba fet because you know, he's not really a red.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Character, right, And that was my concern as well, because
you know, with with Vader, you get black, white and red.
He is black, he's costume.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Is black rather same with Darth Maul.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
So yeah, but yeah, but they but they made it work.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Yeah, it does. It works nicely.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
I did have a question though, the creatures that kind
of they call them the hoax that did descend upon him.
Have we seen these guys before, these this species before?
Speaker 2 (13:42):
You know, I don't know. But here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
They look vaguely familiar, but they also look like something
from and I think I think they look like Boss
Nast to me, And that's what I'm thinking of.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Yeah, yeah, in the sense, yeah they do. They do
kind of remind me of that. But I clearly they're
not Gungan. But I just you know, they are cool.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
Though, Yeah, very cool, very cool.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
All right, good solid book. I enjoyed it.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
I did too. I did as well. So we were
going to take a short break. The uh cover for
the next issue. Bye bye. By the way, it looks amazing.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
I'm glad you like that.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Cure very very much enjoyed the book. So will's like
a short break now and we'll be back to discuss
Doctor Africhaos Agent issue number five of five. Maybe all right,
so the book finally starts getting good to me when
(14:41):
we may be at the last issue, you know, because
I talked about it, I haven't really haven't really been
as as high on the first four issues of this
book as I have the other Doctor Affra books. Yeah,
and which which is fine, It's that doesn't always have
to be for me. I just I didn't. I don't
really feel like they've used the character to her best advantage.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
And you know, you know, not every book is gonna hit,
you know. And plus you know, we we were spoiled,
you know, especially with you know, Karen Gilli's run and
then you followed up with with Alyssa Wong in their run,
you know, and just you know, it was a lot
of fun, and this would just sort of seem to
sort of take a step back, not not stylistically but
almost character driven step back because you know it's you know,
(15:25):
Afra has been unencumbered, if you will, and it's probably
a poor choice of words, you know, unencumbered by Sana,
unencumbered by Magna, unencumbered by Bader obviously, you know, and
you know she's you know, she's not this you know,
oh my god, I'm on the run. I'm gonna die
and I'm you know, I'm going to betray everybody, and
she's having to sort of she's almost like a square peg,
(15:47):
you know, you know with the New Republic, you know,
you know, and and basically her real only real tie
from the previous outings is you know, from you know,
is is there her interactions with Luke, who's you know
who Luke being Luke sees the good in her, even
if Afford doesn't quite see the good in herself. And
(16:08):
you know, but the series is starting to gain a
little steam and you know, this is the first time
you're listening to this podcast. A thank you for joining us,
b just a rehash. This is supposed to be a
monthly ongoing and then it looked like that the trade
paperback was going to be ten issues. But the solicit
is odd because you know, the trade paperback is due
(16:30):
ut May nineteenth, but it's only one hundred and twenty pages,
which is not ten issues, and it's only seventeen ninety nine,
which is not ten issues. And Marvel has said nothing
about what's going on with this series, and you know,
it has not been solicited for like almost three months now,
leading us to conclude that issue number five is probably
(16:52):
it for now. Now that said, you know, I do
know that you know, the writer, Cherished Chen has had
a baby, you know, as Cherish has has posted on
social media. You know, so maybe tragulations more focused on
on that, and obviously for good reasons. But yeah, but
you know, comics companies are tend to not uh they
(17:16):
will crow about a first issue in a new series.
They will not crow loudly when a series is concluding
or ending, unless you know it is a finite uh endeavor,
you know. I mean, you know, and we've gotten that,
you know, like you know, Han Solo and for the
Falcon we've been told five issues, five issues. Uh yeah,
(17:37):
the Hyperspace Stories, Bad Batch, you know, four issues, four issues,
Tides of Terror four issues, four issues, you know, things
like you know Obi Wannekin five issues, five issues, that's fine,
but you know, this one has just caused a lot
of a lot of just frustration among AFRO readers and fans,
myself included. But uh, I don't know. We'll see where
(17:58):
it goes. I give you a spoiler up front. You know,
the the ending to this issue is is nebulous and
then it's a perfect jumping off point for a new mini.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Series, which I hope we get.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
But it's also kind of a nice way to end it. Yeah,
So even if it's not a satisfying way to end it,
it you know it does it? Does? You know? Sort
of you know, tie a ribbon around, you know, and
put it in a bow. So here we go. But anyway,
so yeah, Doctor Afra, Chaos Agent number five potentially of five.
(18:35):
Uh uh a turn out at last. This is written
by Cherish Chin. Art is by Stephen Cummings. I like
Stephen Cummings a lot. Mike Attia is the color artist.
V c's Joe Carrotminya is our letter. The variant or
the main cover that you like so much is by
Edja Kur. There is a great variant cover by rod
Rice which I ordered, and it shows Afra imprisoned by
(18:58):
you know with the jail cell. Uh, basically her electro
shock tattoos. So which is it's a it's a great look. Uh.
Carlos Law again is the book designer. Jay Bowen is
the logo designer, and I do like this logo a lot.
I have been very upfront about that for the very
gick up from the first issue. Assistant editors are Mikey J.
(19:21):
Basso and Drew Baumgardner. Again, Mark Panicia is the editor.
Ce B Sebalski is the editor in chief, and for
Lucasfilm it's Robert Simpson Grace Rris who is an associate editor.
Here clearly this was you know, before Grace's promotion. Uh,
Michael Aglen, Troy Alders, Phil show Stack, and of course
story group Pablo Hidalgo, Matt Martin and Emily Scocannie. So
(19:43):
essentially get you up to date after a botched heyst
Afra was recruited to dagger a part of the New Republic.
Uh sort of the real world, you know, the equivalent
to the real world monuments men from World War Two, Uh,
you know, looking for archaeological artifacts, you know, almost port
of like a tomb raider vibe if you will, you know,
(20:04):
throw in some Indiana Jones, maybe some national treasure and
that's essentially it. But you know, as part of her penance,
if you will, for joining, and she had her electro
shock tattoos deactivated.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
And she's gone off and done some missions with Luke
Skywalker and Han Solo and Chewbacca. Uh. And then uh,
you know, last issue, we discovered that, you know, after
meeting with Meteora Gray, the leader of Dagger, that it
was her sister who deactivated the tattoos. And this is
where we find out about a new sibling from Afra
(20:39):
for Afra. So and uh we open up. We're in
the covert New Republic offices in Nkadia.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
And she's she's listening behind the door as.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Literally got a cup to the door.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Yeah, Leah and Meteora are discussing what's going on.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
The situation dictated this action. Perhaps we should we should
pay it. You still shouldn't have brought her here. Well,
either we take control of the situation now or she's
gonna put to it two together. We'll call her in.
Poodoo says Afra, come in afrass Mediora, thanks Mediora. Nice office,
very thick walls, and then there's Leah. Yeah, welcome doctor Afra.
(21:17):
Doctor Afra, you're the patron by this operation. Huh makes sense.
Having Princess Leiah funding dagger activity certainly explains why I've
been on so many missions as the New Republic's errand
girl Afra. So which one have you hired, my psychotic sister?
Speaker 1 (21:32):
And of course and and I love you, know Leah?
Is you know ever the diplomat does it really get
riled rattled? And she just she tells her you we
needed you for the missions. You helped us track down
a dangerous weapons dealer. You proved your worth, and the
little way to tie down one of the best slices
was to en list someone even better than you that
left us. It was just one choice and a notoriously
reclusive Eturna or as you know her, your sister Delan Afra,
(21:57):
to which Afra says, half sister. Well, your half sister
possesses the same charming unpredictability that seems to run in
your family. Her skills make her an invaluable asset protecting
our people, and her assence also means that when it
comes to your tattoos, we couldn't unlock them. Even if
we wanted to. And so, of course Afras is not
(22:18):
pleased by this was a very prudent decision to give
flight risks a flight risk so much responsibility. Metiority looks
just I love that metior to just goes it comes
into frame. It's just what meteoros is used to yourself
flight risk and so Land lays it out for basically says,
your mission is to find Dellan and to reassure all
(22:38):
parties of your sister's continued to alignment with a new Republic.
If you can successfully bring her in for a meeting
on Nikadia, I will sign off on the unlocking of
your tattoos. And after you know of course hasn't spoken
to her years, which explains why we've never heard of her,
and they tell her where you're not gonna be going alone,
meet your latest partner d G eight seven and Matt,
how happy were you at a Gaunt draw? It basically
(23:00):
acts like ram Man from Masters of the Universe.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
I was super super stoked. Uh. And as brief as
this series has been, I really fundamentally hope that we
get a black series d G eight seven.
Speaker 1 (23:14):
Enough it'd be easy enough to to to make effects
Emily of One.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
Oh totally, but you know, I just I love him.
I love him so much.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
So you can't cider with an astromc but a tinker
and a tinker and supply of sentis and unconvincual unit
modified to meet the mission needs. Don't let it. Let's
fool you.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
And I like I like how I talked about Starfighter
core because we got that star Fighter movie being made,
you know, you know, so I wonder, I wonder how
many of the of the the pop culture websites will
have these breathless takes on potential Starfighter tie in. Is
there a clue to the movie?
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Is after going to be in Starfighter? They mentioned him,
They mentioned Starfighter in a book you.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
Watch, It's gonna happen. It's gonna happen, Mark my words,
mark my words.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
So so, and I like that we we basically get
a montage over a few pages of her tracking her
half sister on ord Mantel Narhaska, and then I guess.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
That's where a nice little sequence and and Provina is
where you know she hits pay dirt, and.
Speaker 1 (24:29):
That's where we see the wham knocks the door open
so they can get in.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
I love Stripe. I will die for Stripe. Something happens
to Stripe, I will, I will before after I kill
everybody else.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
It Stripes plural put some respect on his nickname.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
I'm sorry I have offended stripes.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Stripe is a gremlin, Stripes is an Astro is a gong.
And and I love to walk in the place is trashed,
and Afrod notices he is I too often keep miscellaneous
electrical parts just thrown around the ground for easy access.
And of course somebody jumps in free slice or scum,
(25:09):
and he's been waiting all morning for her, and he
thinks she's her sister, and of course the gonk droid
crashes right into and knocks him over, and he says,
what kind of criffing droid pest? And he hits him again,
and this time the guy fights back and knocks pour
Stripes into a wall and has Afro pinned up against it,
(25:30):
and we get a flashback to Afra learning how to
turn a power cell into a basically a magnet.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Yeah, yeah, you know, to do basically a much more
powerful static charge. And you know, and this is her
and her sister, so you know, if you heat this
up in your hand, really fast to get a little shot.
But when you throw it at a decent piece of metal,
it should attach magnetically. And guess what happens. And you know,
afters like decent piece of metal, indeed, come on, come on,
(26:01):
come on, starts doing it, Boom does it? Boom and
down goes the dude. Of course, stripes gonekunk gunk gonksm
out the house.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
And that's exactly where I started calling him ram Man,
And folks, if you're not familiar, ram Man is one
of my favorite characters from Masters of the Universe, precisely
because the figure does almost nothing.
Speaker 4 (26:25):
I just like that.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
I remember that figure and uh and.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
I love she. She fans a keep at shees a
keep ab without a perceivable door, my favorite kind. So
she figures out how to open it up and it
opens up into the into the basement and her sister's
waiting downstairses. I knew she would have changed that code
the second you walked in the door. Hello, small Fry,
just hello delan See. I called you by your actual
name because I'm a mature adult still using father's name
(26:53):
days your code that's cute, embarrassing but cute, and it's
just you know, it's just your typical sibling bickering back
and forth, and she's and of course her sister can't
Dylan can't help, but just riber a little bit, She ses,
I'm impressed your tracking skills have evolved enough for you
to find me. A decade ago, you'd still be spending
on Hosney and Prime. Now you're good enough to leave
(27:16):
the Imperial Hawks on my tail back to a perfectly
good safe house with your typical showing off. So thanks
for that, She say, you did that all on your own.
That guy was here before me, waiting for you, so
they would have left none the wiser if you hadn't
just smoked one of them. So always right, no matter
what anyone says, it's it's it's me and my brother
all the time. And she says, I'm guessing you don't
(27:37):
want to come to Nikatia with me, and and Dylan
says not really. No, she says, well, at least fix
my tattoo. Then she goes, sorry, but no, she said,
we take you thirty sex. And I love the way
that that they've drawn after here because she's she's she's
appalled and surprised, and she says, I don't have time
for reverting to your old childhood dynamics, Delan does. They're
upstairs already, and she says, this is one of the
(27:59):
last survives having imperial factions in the Deco Straits that's
been trying to recruit her since Jack, who it looks
like I said not interested one too many times. So shees,
aren't you and after says are maybe we just go
to Nicadia. Aren't you safer there than alone in a
grain field? And Dellan says there is no protection and uh,
(28:24):
and so they make their way outside where she's got
a ship and she's and she's telling AfOR that she's
heard about all of her escapades, and she says, you
work with almost no strategy. You make noise, bad friends,
and even worse enemies, and then you wonder why an
entity like the New Republic was able to wrap their
fingers around your neck for almost a year. You sacrifice
freedom because you are chaos, she says, to be smarter
(28:44):
as Jealous says, okay, one, lectures are wasted on me too.
It's not like I want to be here, you know,
trying to convince the galaxy's most immovable force, that's you
by the way, that they should do what's best for themselves.
I just want my tattoos back, So either you unlock
them now or I passed you until you go to
Nakadia with me.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
You know, I think at some point it's cherish. Must
have a sibling. Oh yes, absolutely, No I have a sibling.
But you know, there's a six year age gap between us,
you know, so we were not particularly close growing up.
Speaker 1 (29:12):
Well, and see I've got a ten year age gap
between me and my brother. And this sounds remarkably like conversations.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
That we have. So so I am digging the dynamic.
So yeah, so they take off too.
Speaker 1 (29:28):
They take off, They take off, and of course Delan
is not much of a much of a pilot, and
they crash and does.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
That does the ship that attacks them? Does does that
not look more? You know? That reminds me of the
little shuttle of uh, you know, attached to the Ghost
and Star Wars Rebels a little bit.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
Yeah, very much, very much. And so Afra is knocked out,
and so Delan leaves her behind a in like an
event of some sort. And uh, then she she's basically
gonna turn herself in to to these folks that are
after her after of course wakes up knocks her way out,
(30:08):
and she calls them polyweds, said maybe triple check you
have the right part before you march on out of here,
and she tries to pass herself off as the real
Eterna and she goes way to go adult. Your sloppy
movements probably led these slave drew these slaymos slimos right
to me. So she's still playing the part of her
sister at this point, and she says, I've changed my
(30:30):
tune about your Imperial Credit hogs. I'm open to meeting
just like that. Yeah, just like that. It's a hurry
up already, and they're both they're both looking at it
and there their captors are going. They both fit the description,
both annoying, both have tattoos, though this one's kind of
falling apart. So let's just take them both them for
the boss to decide. And this is the This is
the next panel is the UH Ocean's eleven reference. It's
(30:50):
almost verbatim the conversation that Brad Pitt had with Don
cheedele outside of the cop car when we first meet
Don Cheatle's character when the cops up and he's they're
bringing into the vault and one of the alarms goes off.
Oh that's it what I just slipped you right?
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Yeah? Nice?
Speaker 1 (31:10):
Yeah had to be and so uh so she hands
it to her and uh and it's it's basically the
same thing. It's three of those power cells and they
use them the same way they did before, and this
time they disable the whole ship and jump out and
uh and Dylan's is not bad, and Afric says, that's
(31:31):
not my first time. Pretty handy trick I learned as
a child, honestly. And so they come there, they come
after the the captors come out after him, and uh,
Dylans is buying me some time if you can't. She
goes after. She said she wanted to skin us. She's
just reversed the charge polarity from the batteries here and
unlocks her. Uh Dylan has unlocked her restraints and uh
(31:54):
knocks out there their pursuer, and here comes the Gonk
droid finally caught up stripes wrap things up, Fort William.
Here he comes as Gonk and I can just hear
him just barreling through this this field of plants, flowers,
whatever it is. They look like whipper Wills again.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
I love him.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
Yeah, he just kicking the guy as he's kicking him
and after sets, So what's this gonna be? D And
Della says, I appreciate you coming back for me, so
that so for that, you should have these back and
she just turns them back on.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Yeah, this is good.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
I feels so much better. She has ready for more chaos.
I'm sure. She goes, thanks, but what about and Dallas says,
it's a long journey to the outer rim. I have
plenty of places I had out for a while. She goes,
you're just gonna keep running, and Della says, it's out
lived my whole life, Shelley.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
It's kind of how they both live their lives. Yeah,
you think about it.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
And Shelley is the one finally saying, look, I don't
know how I ended up on this side of the equation,
but whether it's those three are a new set of
hired guns. Those and peers are not going to stop
sending people after you talk to the New Republic. They
can keep you safe and you're really good at what
you do. Instead of wallowing and yet another safe house,
you could have a life. Says you're not like me,
you can contribute to something good and it's a really
nice change. But it's a lot crammed into the last
(33:02):
three pages. It really feels like they were trying to
wrap this story up in one issue instead of two
or three.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
To me, you know, you're exactly right, that's what they're doing.
And that's kind of why, you know, as much as
I don't want to admit it, that's kind of way
I think it's probably a last issue.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
Yeah, and she she has this whole thing about neither
of us can readily place our faith in anyone certainly
not any one institution. This is Dellan talking. Someone's always
on our tail, she says. I. And if you think
I'm capable of good, so were you. So on that note,
I suggest you bucket yourself in small fry and we
figure out our next move at the next horizon. Veris
is so sentimental. But when I think about it, it's
(33:37):
been a long time on stuff since I felt like
we could do anything. And it's a two of them.
The last shot, quote unquote is a two of them
in the cockpit. Afra is taking control. She's going to
do the flying, I guess, And that's where we get
in and that's when we said, check out more great
titles next month in a Galaxy far far away. We
don't get next month in Doctor Raffers. I think you're
probably right.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
Yeah, well again, you know, yeah, and these are all
all books that we you know, that we already know
we're coming because they were solicited. But yeah, and I
think you know that I think, you know, sort of
stems to a deeper issue here, you know, because you know,
we just had New York Comic Con it, you know,
a couple of weeks back, and uh, you know, there
(34:21):
were no new comic announcements at all. I mean, you know,
we had we had we had the higher public Pathfinders
that's coming from dark Horse, but there was nothing from Marvel,
and so, you know, everything seems to have been getting
ready to sort of shut down for a month or two.
You know. Obviously, we'll see what the February solicits you know, reveal,
(34:42):
you know, because I mean for Marvel's February solicits, we
will get Star Wars number ten. But you know, Legacy
Evaders Concluded is supposed to stop at twelve, and it's
based on the trade solicits. Jedi Knights is ending at ten.
Hunt for the Falcon ends at number five, and there's
nothing new from Marble.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
Surely they got something big up their sleeve.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
But we'll see, Yeah, we'll see, we will see.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
So we'll take a short break. We'll be back to
discuss what we're gonna get next week in the even
nearer future. Okay, let's do it, all right, man, real quick?
What doll we got next week?
Speaker 2 (35:18):
On Tuesday, November fourth, which is election day, so be
sure to vote, we get Jedi Knights Volume one, Guardians
of the Republic trade paperback back collects the first five
issues of Jedi Knights. We get The High Republic Adventures
Phase three, Volume five, trade paperback, collecting seventeen through twenty
of that dark Horse series. And then on Wednesday, November fifth,
we get the Legacy of Vader number ten.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
All right, we'll be back next week to discuss those
books and anything else that happens. I do have one
blurb I did see. I went to see Gilma Datorre's
new Frankenstein film yesterday. Was it wonderful, Absolutely wonderful. I've
heard different takes on how closely it hues to the novel,
but it certainly seemed more like what I know of
the novel than any film adaptation I've seen it. Of course,
(36:02):
it's del Toro, so it's lush, it looks amazing. It's
just gorgeous acting as uniformly great. Jacob Lord I believe
his name as the Monster should get an Oscar nomination
if there's any justice, along with half the cast of Sinners.
But yeah, if you have a chance to go see
it while it's in the theater, do so. It does
drop on Netflix, I believe on No. Number seventh, which
(36:23):
is my birthday, so happy birthday to me, so you
can watch it then if not before. But yeah, I
highly highly recommend it.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
Matt.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
I predict you will love it.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
I'm sure I will. And what really struck me about
it was, you know, there was a you know, if
somebody had, you know, posted this on Blue Sky Amy Chu,
the comic book writer whose work I really adore, she
had noted that, you know. At the end credits there
was a thanks to Bernie Wrightson yep, the late, the
late Bernie Wrightson, who did the most amazing, amazing, you
(36:57):
know Frankenstein graphic novel. So you know, so I was
really glad to see that and.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
What was the name of that one? Do you remember?
Speaker 2 (37:03):
Oh gosh no, okay, see, let me see if I
can look it up for the time.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
We don't have time.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
No, we got time, we got time, we got time.
We got two minutes, Bertie writes in Brankett's side. Let's
see here. Yeah, it's just Bernie Wrights AND's Frankenstein.
Speaker 1 (37:17):
Okay, I'm glad we took the time to do that,
all right.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
And yeah it was from dark Horse Comics.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
Okay, and we we did reveal last week. The Audio
Admint Calendar is coming. We did drop a preview, so
it is available and uh iTunes, Apple Podcasts and any
anywhere you have podcast that you get podcasts should be
able to search for the Audio Admint Calendar and find
it on the list there. We'll have more episodes coming
out in December. I look forward to that. So it's
(37:42):
still next week for Star Wars splash Page.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
I'm Jack, I'm Matt made the course being we always.
Speaker 4 (37:52):
The Star Wars splash Page theme song is Mark Hamill
can handle about Chris Cape. Check Chris out at chriscape
dot com and on songs out on Twitter at christ
Cape and on Facebook.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
But stop paying
