Ethan Sacks is back and penning Star Wars: Boba Fett -- Black, White & Red #3, an absolute masterpiece of a character study of the titular bounty hunter that's lavishly illustrated by Juan José Ryp and lettered by Virtual Calligraphy's Joe Caramagna.

We break it all down, including that cameo from a certain archeologist that we, nor you, were expecting.

Comics Discussed This Week:

  • Boba Fett: Black, White & Red #3 (of 4)
Star Wars Comics New to Marvel Unlimited This Week:

  • Star Wars (Vol. 4) #4
News:
  • Ethan Sacks had a chat with Boba Fett Fan Club about this week's Star Wars: Boba Fett -- Black, White & Red #3 (of 4).
  • In his latest newsletter (subscribe if you haven't, it's worth it), Charles Soule mentions the positive clamor about his Legacy of Vader title.
  • In an interview with Comic Book Club, Chris Condon mentions Star Wars now that he's exclusive to Marvel Comics. We're thinking a Condon-penned Star Wars title might be i the offing. (Around the 47-minute mark in the video.)

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Hello, you're listening to the Star Wars Splash Page Comics
and Review and it's episode number four hundred and seventy eight.
I am your host. Matt Jeff is not with us
this week, feeling just a stabit under the weather and
a little little fatigued. So I gave him the night off,

(00:31):
as is my prerogative, which he has also been kind
enough to do for me from time to time.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Dig me all the stayin ma I'm gonna be as
beer ful Park I don't want since running the Galla scenes.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Just one comic book this week, and that is Manoba
fet Black, White, and Red, number three of four. Before
we do anything, let's jump into the news, all right.
So Marvel's February Star Wars comic solicits are out, and
it's just the two books Star Wars number ten of ten,

(01:21):
and of course the already announced and previously revealed jar
Jar number one one shot. No Legacy Evader, no Jedi Knights,
of course, no doctor Africhaos Agent, but that should be
part for the course for now. So that has got

(01:41):
got us intrigued because essentially there's nothing new after February now.
Of course, obviously that will probably change once we get
these solicits from March, you know, just in the week
leading up to Christmas, or probably actually the week before Christmas.
Uh So what could be coming? Who knows. Perhaps we'll

(02:06):
get a Jedi Nights season two. Maybe we will get
a a sequel, if you will, uh to the Legacy
of Vader series. Given what we've seen in the Legacy
of Vader number twelve solicit details certainly does a little
really interesting, doesn't it. So uh, you know, we might
see another another aspect of Kylo Rinn, you know, and

(02:30):
and Ben Solo and leading up to the events of
you know, the Rise of Skywalker. Who knows we will see.
One interesting thing about the February solicits from Marvel is
we are getting a Black History Month connecting cover variant
by Tar and Clark. And we've got a little little

(02:52):
detail on it on the Facebook page and on the
Blue Sky feed. But it's a it has got quite
a collection of characters, I mean, you know, I mean, gosh,
it's it's just Lando, Mace, Windu, Sagarera, Finn and Jana
the Moff Gideon from The Mandalorian, along with Grief, Karga,

(03:12):
Keller and Beck Uh you know, there's a Sarah Junda
from Star Wars, Jedi Fallen Order and Jedis and Jedi Survivor,
and we have the High republics Kiev Trendis and Lula
Talasolo as well. Of course you know Snstaros, so uh,
it's just a gorgeous looking uh, you know, two cover spreads,

(03:33):
so definitely definitely check that out. Dark Horse, of course,
is not alone. You know, we also have dark Horse Solicits,
and we are getting from March the High Republic Adventures
Pathfinders number one of six, as well as the fourth
and final issue of Hyperspace Stories, The Bad Batch Rogue Agents.

(03:56):
So it's not like we're gonna be wanting for Star
Wars comics, but it certainly is, uh, you know, compared
to two or three years ago, when you know, we
were looking at four to six, sometimes even eight Star
Wars comics a month. Me personally, I kind of like
having fewer comics.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
You know, you're able to, I think, devote more attention
to what's being published and dig deeper into the story. Uh,
we'll see, you know. And as for Marvel, you have
to realize, you know that Marvel is basically kind of
doing ten issue runs. For most of it's it's series.
Not all there are there are outlayers, but in a

(04:34):
way that that makes a lot of sense, I think,
And you know, I've always liked it, as we've said
before on this podcast, to you know, almost like TV series,
you know, you know, almost like really European TV series,
you know, where it's usually six anywhere from six to
like twelve episodes for a season, and I and I like,
I like that format, and uh, I don't know, we'll
see what happens, but still, you know, it could be worse.

(04:58):
There could be no Star Wars comic, but I don't
think that's ever going to be the case again. So
and then other than that pretty much it for the news.
I would recommend going over to the Boba Fet Fan Club.
They have a great interview with Ethan Sachs, who wrote
this week's Boba Fet, Black White, and Red number three.

(05:21):
It's a fun interview and Ethan is always a solid,
solid read, So definitely do check that out. And so
with that, we will take a short break and we
will be right back speaking of Ethan with Star Wars.
Boba Fet, Black White, and Red number three of four Okay,

(05:45):
let's dive right in. If you've listened to us before,
especially when we've been talking about Marvel's Black, White and
Red Star Wars output, you'll know that we're big fans
of this format. It's essentially each issue is a one
and done story. Is it canon? It might be canon
to Jason, it could be canon who knows, you know,

(06:05):
but that's neither here nor there. The point is is
it's a solidly entertaining story, uh, and for that we're grateful.
So this, like I said, is Boba Fett, Black White,
and Red number three, written by Ethan Sachs. The artist
is Juan Jose Rip letters are by Virtual Calligraphies Joe Kamania.

(06:26):
The main cover is by Im Gist, and then the
variant covers are by Klaus Janssen and Palo Sakara and
Rochelle Rosenberg. Carlos Law is the designer, Mikey J. Basso
is the assistant editor, Mark Panitzia is the editor and C. B.
Sibalski is the editor in chief. For Lucas Film, we
have Grace Rris, Editor, Robert Simpson, Senior editor, Michael Siglane,

(06:49):
Creative director Troy Oudels Troy Alders excuse me, the art director,
Phil Shostack, the creative art manager, and from the story
group we have Pablo Hidalgo, Matt Martin, and Emily Schho Connie.
This issue or episode, if you will, is called Meeting
of the Minds, and y'all, it's thirty three pages of

(07:12):
amazing black, white and red art and story and it
is you know, I won't hate to say this, you know,
you know, because you know superlatives can be wasted. This
is a super superbly stunning story. We open up now

(07:34):
in the Fakote district on Narshada and uh Shiras Corsha
is pitching a duck fit. You know he's here. I'm
paying you in these mercenaries allowed to protect me, so
you better do your job, Josh, Poor, do not worry.
Shrax Korshaw. You have got me and I have got

(07:55):
the numbers and blasters, and you know he's got five
cronies with five blasters. Plus those doors are reinforced her
or steel one meter thick forged by the best smiths
on metal orn and shar axe I prayed to thick enough.
And share Axe is really cool because it's almost like
a toad like creature, you know, and just just you know,

(08:18):
sitting in a tub full of water and boom, oh god,
it's Boba Fet Boba Fett. Yeah, has blown right through
the door and he's standing there and he's just sort
of surveying the room. And share Axe is just like,
I will double the payment for whoever brings me FET's heart,

(08:38):
and uh, Bet says, whatever she's paying you, it's not enough,
and he, you know, proceeds just to toast everyone in
the room, fight others as well. Uh you know, Jaspoor
is relishing this, this confrontation, been dreaming of killing you
for a long time, and Bet you know, just slams

(08:59):
him with a helmet. Go back to sleep, oh you know,
And and then Vet very quickly dispatches all of the
other you know, hired muscle, even though even though Jazz
Is you know, has come back to try to you know,
have another go around using martial arts. And of course,
you know, he's he's he's he's bragging on his speci.

(09:21):
He's noting Sakians are known for our reflexes. I haven't
raised from birth to be your superior as a fighter,
and that says maybe, and he you know, kicks one
of his his his right foot up boom, and you know,
hits hits him, hits the guy in the knee with
the two little blades, if you will, But I fight dirtier,

(09:44):
says Ft. And he looks at the looks up at
at Shirracks and says, h you should pick your security
jobs more carefully, Cortia, you know why I'm here. And
course he's like, please, I'm just an information broker, good
because I need information. If if they find out I talk,

(10:05):
you don't know what they would do to me. You
know what I will do if you don't? What? Why
is this so important to you? The bounty is dormant.
You should have left the whole thing buried in the past.
And then we go to the past and we see
Boba Fett here, a much younger Boba fet not quite
wearing the Mandalorian armor yet, but you know, making making

(10:28):
making his way through the galaxy, and he's gone to
the blood Oath spice den on ord Redoma and seated
in the bar is just poor who's who's much younger,
uh and staring him down and it's a it's a
packed it's a packed, packed, packed room and it's fet
walks in. He says to him, word of advice, kid,

(10:49):
you are in over your head. You should choose your
bounty jobs more carefully, Itchuta. And you know, because it's
not stopping fat and order, Doma is great because it's
a you know, it's it's it's one gosh. I think
I think I think the first uh, the first appearance,

(11:11):
I think it was mentioned. I think it was mentioned
in Star Wars The Old Republic, and then I think
it was an entry in the Legacy of Sith Codex,
and then it was also in Star Wars Insider number
one forty seven. The first appearance though, of this world
was Onslaught at Arda, which I then reserves is yeah,

(11:36):
it's a It was a part of the it was
one of the adventure modules for a then Fantasy Flight
Games Age of Rebellion. So love that we're digging deep
into this stuff. So uh so Fete approaches and guns
get drawn, and uh, you know, we turn the page
and we see whom Fete is pursuing. I am Coren Bargeron.

(12:00):
You have made a disadvantage. You know who I am. Well,
you are of no consequence to me. Did I kill
someone important to you. There have been so many it's
hard to keep tracking. And you know, Quorm is surrounded
by this motley menagerie, and I just you know, it's
just you know Quarren, you know a Zuckus snipe suckers character, Rody,

(12:28):
and then this one particularly crazy looking personally, it was
just Spiky Hair and Fat says, you killed the son
of fishmongers over a game of chance. Cubes parents are poor,
but they pulled together enough to hire me in terms
of your bounty or dead or dead, and crazy spiky
Hair guy's like, how dare you touge the great Vargon

(12:50):
by your mortal laws? He is going to ascend to
live forever. And Bargon is just like, man, it's that
bound shrip. Don't waste your breath on the unbeliever, or
he'll be dead soon enough. You see, boy, I am
a center, It's true, but most of my victims are
the kind that aren't missed. I'm on good terms with
the syndicate's payoff the local authorities, and no reputable hunter

(13:12):
would waste such a time, waste time on such a
small payout. And you know Fat doesn't mess around. He
starts firing. You'll find I'm no ordinary body hunter. And
then we cut to the now again and we see
Fat walking our rainy wind st wind swept planet, an

(13:34):
unregistered outpost called Danovia. And of course Dadovia is in
the Danovia System, which is in the Expansion Region's Holly Sector.
And this, of course was first mentioned in the Star
Wars Build the Millennium Falcon number fifty, and it also
does show up in Star Wars The Complete Visual Dictionary,

(13:55):
the new addition. So that's kind of cool, you know, nice, nice, nice,
so and of course the world, the world according to Wikipedia,
the world originated in the Star Wars Legends cont Continuity,
where it was mentioned in the two thousand and two

(14:15):
reference book Star Wars Attack of the Clones the Visual Dictionary.
So interesting there and it's Fat and he walks up
to the structure, knocks on the door. The door opens, Greetings, traveler,
have you come to a tone for your past? Sense?
Now here to commit new ones? And you know the
woman who's answered doors. You can't just trespass. This is

(14:37):
a sacred place. Of course, that's not really gonna stop
Fat And he walks in and he looks at the
chamber and he sees people packing everything up and we see, oh,
you know, it's just we see Shrift standing on top
of one of the crates and you know, the wall

(14:57):
is made up of skulls that have been cemented in
and Triff is holding a skull and he's like, what's
all that clamor disrupting my meditation? Vargun? Where is he? Wait?
I know that voice, and you know, Shrip drops the
skull and his eyes are wide, his mouth is a gape.
Oh no. And we cut back to then and it's
fat firing and dueling with everybody and doing a fairly

(15:19):
good job, you know, and Triff is like, why don't
you just go away and die? Too busy at the
moments it's fed, you know, and he kills a quar
and just you know, kills kills every more, you know,
some more people. And of course there's always jos Is
watching the scene, just wrapped, you know by the violence.

(15:40):
You know, not bad, but I can take him, and
he probably could. But you know, Vet does a great
job of just you know, taking taking the you know,
the Motley menagerie down until you know, and he's getting
a little cocky. He's like, yeah, it seems like collecting
this bounty, he's going to be easier. Then all of
a sudden he gets, you know, shot in the back

(16:00):
with what looks to be a vibro pike, and it's
just it's just a lot of fun, but it's Vargon
who has done the deed. And he's like, you are
a bit of a downer kid. Somebody spit in your
blue milk this morning or something. Ma, I'm in a
good mood. Tonight is a celebration and he crushes FET's

(16:24):
pistol and you're just not not enough of a threat
to ruin that for me. And he picks fed up
by his you know, the by his collar, throws his
helmet off, he goes beg for mercy and maybe I'll
be maybe I'll kill you quick, and Fet goes a
Fet doesn't beg, and you know the guy says, oh,
by the by the great monks, your jango FET's progeny,

(16:47):
what a disappointing stain you are in a great man's legacy.
And then we cut back to now and you know,
the the crew that's been loading all the carts again,
another menagerie motleyman azerie. Who the hell's are you. I
am the son of Django fet Air to his legacy.
I am your death unless you tell me. And already,

(17:10):
like you know, four of them are just running away
for fet like Boba Fett by Vargne, We're already dead.
Get out of my way, and the others, you know,
stay by with Shrift, cowards and traders. Schrift says they
will be judged by a higher power, but you will
be judged by us. Kill him, you know, and then
one of them, you know, you know, he's gone almost
got like he's got it's almost like superhuman abilities here,

(17:34):
because you know, he he grips his his you know,
his his two fingers and thumbs on each hand and
they sort of spark up with energy and says for
var gone, and that just kills him, and he says,
who's next? Never mind, I'll decide for you. He kills
another one using his his knee rockets, and Shriff is

(17:55):
just like surveying all the dead bodies around him. And
you'll never make me talk. Fat Bargan is beyond your reach.
I would die before I revealed my master's glorious secrets.
And it Shref says that he holds up his hand again,
and we see this very interesting logo on his hand,
something that you could also see in the in the flashback,

(18:16):
and that sort of cocks his head and we cut
to the archaeological site ash Moon one and the hand
is back on a tray and a guy is holding
it at a workbench and he's like, ah, well, I
appreciate your donation to my dig when you contacted me
for help deciphering a ruin, I didn't think that. And fetsus,

(18:38):
can you identify the symbol or not Afra? And it's Coronafra,
doctor Afra, doctor Affer's dad, and he goes, yeah, of
course it's tied to a breakaway secord. The Beaumar monks
heard of them, and fet says yes, and you know,
we get a flashback to Java's Palace with you know,
one of the Beaumar monks skittering about. Of course, Jaba's

(19:01):
Palace used to be a Bomar monastery, and Krn goes
into a little more details. Most are rather unsettling to
encounter religious acolytes who remove their brains and stuff them
and nutrient rich jars to ponder the universe for all eternity.
This particular sect, though, they are positively nasty, academically speaking,

(19:24):
murderers and thieves who believe Ascending has purged them of
their mortal sins, escaping judgment in our plane of existence.
And that's just like, tell me where to find him,
because you know that's what that does. And we cut
to Javik, the edge of wild space, and we see
Slave one flying and we see another temple with four

(19:45):
big banners that have the same image and logo that
was on Shrift's hands. Slave one lands. It's sandy, dusty,
and Fet walks away from the ship toward the temple.
It's got no real door and he just walks in.
It's dark. He turns on the targeting site and light

(20:07):
on his gun and he scans the temple and we
see on the wall simple glass orbs filled with brains
and that nutrient rich fluid, and that's looking around. And
then a droid shows up, forearmed, not the traditional bomar style,
but it's got a spherical tank filled with the brain

(20:30):
on the chest. Greetings, traveler, you are a long way
from wherever it is you should be. And Fet says,
I'm looking for a mind, a particularly evil one goes
by the name of Corm Vargin and the Droid leans in,
we have evolved past our old identities. Here whatever past
sins a convert had died along with their mortal bodies.

(20:51):
We are holy beings. Let's skip the sermon and go
to the park where I blast every brain until I
find the right one. And as he says this, you
know he's targeting the wall of brains and he starts firing.
Chum crunch was that him. No, I can keep going,
And then we cut back to the droid, who has
in you know, a circular buzzsaw has emerged from one

(21:12):
of his arms. You always were an annoying dry deck,
fet Uh, And that triggers a flashback to when Fete
was on the floor and Korn was got you know,
got his trying to figure out what to do with him.
Shripp is there and Korm says, your father would be
so disappointed that you turned out to be such a
dry deck. Now, Django, Django, now, Django. He was a

(21:35):
great man, and then again now he's a dead man,
ended up decomposing in a grave, just like those Fishmonger's son.
Everybody dies. Sometimes I'll admit it's because I killed him,
But that's not the point. I'm not going to be
like everyone else. I'm going to ascend. I believe my

(21:55):
past sense behind and he punches fat yo wham, just
cold cocks him oops one last sin for old time's sake.
Getting past these mortal urges can be harder than wrangling
a drunken Maantha. You get to live, korm says, as
he walks away, Bets on the floor, wiping up the
blood and potentially some of his teeth. But with the

(22:19):
knowledge that you failed your clients and your father's legacy, Bets,
that's going to find you, kill you. No, you won't soon.
I will be far out of your reach and I
will be part of something greater. And as he walks away,
sure you know, Shriff is looking at him with a
you know, demonic glee on his face. And we cut

(22:39):
to now and we give this amazing two page spread
that that rip is just go on out of this
world and drawing uh and it's you know, dozens upon
dozens of traditional bomar monks, you know, with their spider bodies,
and we get skinter skinter skinter skinter skinter and Korms

(23:00):
is in my past life, I did warn you about
the whole greater power thing. You will have to kill
all of us to walk out of here alive. And
you know, we get a better view here at Korms
droid body that's got four legs and four arms, you know,
so it's it's a little different, well it's a lot different,
but it's a very interesting design. And that, of course

(23:23):
is about to be overwhelmed by all of this. And
of course that's got attitude, and he's confident, he's got
he's got a boatload of self confidence. He says, fine,
by me, kills one of the bomar amongk brain, you know,
bowl brain brain bolts, but then stop the others from coming.
And Korms of sea. My fellow members of this sect

(23:45):
all were once murderers, thieves and scoundrels, and we have
been trying to find peace and enlightenment in our new forms.
But maybe it is good to occasionally honor our past.
After all, what's one more sin when you have an
eternity to a tone? And of course, you know, a
Bomar monk spider manages to to knock Vet to the

(24:09):
ground and is about to you know, he's using its
pincers to try to try to disable him, then take
him out, and of course shoots the brain bull and
he says, they listen to you talk for eternity sounds
like hell to me. And then Bet gets nailed again
by a sneak attack from behind, much like Korm got
him back back in the canteena. But you know, he

(24:33):
recovers kills that Bomar. Your eternity is now scream wham,
and Corn says, all this time you're still vulnerable to
the sneak attack, and he hurls Fete back and Bet
lands against the wall, takes out three or four more
brain bulls, and he's approached by four more Bomar monks.
So he gets out one of his wrist rockets, fires

(24:55):
off four of them. Boom boom boom boom boom. Oh
gets knocked and yet more are coming, and Fet realizes
too many new plan so he flicks the switch on
the gaunt, one of his gauntlets, and we cut outside
and we see a shadow approaching the temple, and we
cut back inside. In there his Corn, you cannot fight

(25:16):
eternity fed all of a sudden rumble boom, and it's
slave one firing on the temple and just demolishing it,
and Korn realizes, oh, no, I can't. I can't die,
not like this, and Fits is, don't worry, that's not
how you're gonna die, and he lasses him uh, you know,
with with his uh with his gauntlet again and drags,

(25:38):
drags and flies him out of the collapsing temple out
onto the surface. Shrumble, boom, bazah. Korn uses his saw
blade and severs the cable, and Vet goes flying and
hits the ground because he's you know, he's equal librium
has been altered. And then Korm is immediately on him
and he smacks some wham, rest assured, I will atone

(26:00):
for this one last murder. And then we go to
the next panel and Fed says, choom, maybe in another life,
And you look down and Feed has shot Corm's brain bowl.
How can I still have a price on my head?
Corn says, when I no longer have a head, I
would have thought the Fishbogger's bounty it would be dormant

(26:22):
by now. Fat leans over and looks at him as
Corm collapses to the ground. Oh, the bounty expired long ago.
Nobody was looking for you anymore except me and I
never let a bounty get away, and he flies off,
and you know, Corm is in the in the sand
and dust, collapsing down, dying no longer eternal, and that's

(26:49):
where it ends. It's amazingly well paced story. It's so
much fun, and it's just even it's done a fabulous
job of capturing the Ft character, building on what he
did in the Jango Fet mini series. You know, I mean,
Fete is like Vader, He's universally known and you know,

(27:13):
has retained that popularity through it all. And this, you know,
and again Ethan gives us this great story, and you know,
we get to see a younger Fet, you know, before
before he's got you know, his his father's gear on,
if you will so, but I have a feeling that
he was probably not wearing the Mandalorian armor in a

(27:33):
bid to sort of maybe preserve his anonymity. So definitely
get this one. Check it out. It is so good.
And of course the next one is due out December
thirty first, and it will be written by Alyssa Long

(27:54):
and illustrated by Sarah Picelli and the main cover is
by Ken Lashley. And I'm looking forward to what Alyssa
has written here because on that cover it's Rassling Grace
the Bounty Hunter, and of course Alyssa wrote about wrestling
in the Star Wars Revelations number one from twenty to

(28:17):
twenty three, and you know, so that's that's gonna be
really cool, So definitely look for that. Let's due out
December thirty first, and that we will take another short
break and be back with what's coming out next week?
All right, what have we got next week? Well, we

(28:39):
got some fun stuff, that's for darn sure. I guarantee it.
It's gonna be a blast. It's gonna be post holiday,
so that's to be expected, so we're not gonna have
a whole lot. But on Tuesday, December second, we get
the Star Wars at Doctor Afra Friends and Enemies omnibus

(29:01):
and Omnibus is what marvelous calling it. I don't really
think it's enough issues to qualify, but that's going to
collect Doctor af for twenty six through forty and Sanastarros
one through five. And then on Wednesday, December third, we
get Legacy Evader number eleven, so I'm really looking forward
to that. So with that we will bring this episode

(29:24):
to a close. But we will be back next week.
If you celebrate the holiday this week, may you enjoy it.
If you more in the holiday, we understand, but rest
assured that we are with you one hundred and fifteen percent.
If not so. For Star Wars flash page, I am
Matt Jeff's senses, regards and may course be with.
