Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the Start Thinking Forward podcast. I'm your host,
Brendan L. Draper, and today is day sixteen of our
twenty two day challenge. Let me start with the question
how well do you handle change? Be honest, when life
throws you a curveball, do you adjust and keep moving
or do you dig your heels in, resisting every step

(00:22):
of the way. Here's the truth. Change is inevitable. The
world doesn't stop moving and life doesn't wait for you
to catch up. If you want to succeed, whether in
your career, relationships, or personal growth, you need one thing
above all else adaptability. Today we're diving deep into the

(00:47):
art of adaptability, why it's so important, how it works,
and how you can develop it to thrive in an
ever changing world. Adaptability is the ability to adjust your thoughts, behaviors,
and actions and response to new situations. It's not about
abandoning your principles. It's about being flexible in your approach.

(01:10):
Think about it, The most successful people in history weren't
the smartest or the strongest. They were the ones who
could adapt. Darwin's insight. Charles Darwin famously said, it is
not the strongest of the species that survives nor the
most intelligent, but the one most adaptable to change. This

(01:33):
principle doesn't just apply to evolution. It applies to every
aspect of life. In business, the companies that adapt to
market trends thrive, while those that resist fade into obscurity.
In relationships, people who adapt to their partner's needs build
stronger connections. Adaptability isn't just a skill, it's a survival mechanism.

(01:59):
Let's talk about out what's happening in your brain. When
you adapt to change, your brain has an incredible ability
to reorganize itself, a process called neuroplasticity. When you encounter
something new, your brain creates new neural connections to help
you understand and respond to the situation. But here's the catch.

(02:23):
The more resistant you are to change, the harder it
is for your brain to adapt. The role of cognitive flexibility.
Cognitive flexibility, or the ability to switch between different thoughts
and actions, is a key component of adaptability. Studies from
the Journal of Experimental Psychology show that people with high

(02:45):
cognitive flexibility are better at solving problems, handling stress, and
thriving in uncertainty. The good news, cognitive flexibility is like
a muscle, you can strengthen it through practice. Let's address
the elephant in the room. Why is changed so hard?

(03:05):
Most of us resist change because of fear. Fear of
the unknown, fear of failure, fear of losing control. Our
brains are wired to seek comfort and predictability. When faced
with uncertainty, the amygdala, or fear center, kicks into high gear,

(03:29):
making us feel anxious and hesitant. But here's the thing.
Growth doesn't happen in comfort zones. It happens when you
step into the unknown and embrace the discomfort. Blockbuster versus Netflix,
let me give you a business example. Remember Blockbuster. At
its peak, it was a billion dollar company, But when

(03:50):
the market shifted towards streaming, Blockbuster refused to adapt. Meanwhile,
Netflix embraced the change, pivoted its model, and became one
of the most successful companies in the world. The lesson
resistance to change leads to irrelevance. Adaptability leads to growth.
Think about a recent change you resisted. Write it down.

(04:12):
Now ask yourself what were you afraid of? What's the
worst that could have happened? What opportunities might you have
missed by resisting the change? Write down one action you
can take today to embrace uncertainty in your life. Adaptability
isn't just about surviving change, it's about thriving in it.

(04:35):
Let me tell you a story about a man named Jake.
Jake was laid off from his job of fifteen years.
At first, he resisted the change, clinging to the idea
of returning to his old industry. But when he finally
opened himself up to new possibilities, he discovered a passion
for digital marketing, a field he'd never considered before. Today,

(04:57):
Jake runs a successful agency and says losing his old
job was the best thing that ever happened to him.
The key Jake stopped fighting change and started embracing it.
Building adaptability is like building a muscle. It takes practice, effort,
and intentionality. Here are three strategies to get started. Instead

(05:19):
of seeing change as a threat, choose to see it
as an opportunity. Ask yourself, what can I learn from this?
How can this make me stronger? Rigidity is the enemy
of adaptability. Practice letting go of things you can't control.
This doesn't mean giving up. It means focusing your energy

(05:41):
on what you can change, and adaptability grows when you
try new things, step out of your routine, take small risks,
and experiment with new approaches. Every time you step into
the unknown, you strengthen your adaptability muscle. Your adaptability plan.
Write down one area of your life where you want

(06:02):
to be more adaptable. Now write three actions you can
take to practice adaptability in that area. For example, if
you struggle with change at work, volunteer for a new project.
If you resist change in your personal life, try a
new hobby or routine. Adaptability requires clarity and focus, and

(06:22):
that's where supree bro a I comes in. This platform
helps you track your progress, identify patterns, and adjust your
strategies in real time. If you're ready to embrace change
and thrive, check out summer at SA read bro I
eies S e R E b r O dot AI.

(06:45):
Here's your final challenge for today. Write down one change
you're currently facing. Ask yourself, how can I reframe this
as an opportunity? What's one small step I can take
to embrace this change? Now commit to taking that step today.
All adaptability isn't just about surviving change, It's about thriving

(07:08):
in it. It's about seeing every twist and turns a
chance to grow, learn and create something better. If this
episode resonated with you, share it. Let's inspire others to
embrace change and build a future where adaptability is the norm.
Until next time, keep moving forward, keep thinking forward, and

(07:30):
keep adapting.
