Don't you come back no more?No man in the room, Jack
and don't you come back? No? Yeam benilos an a the SDL socker
(00:33):
Sunday. So it's Santiago at Trombos, Espanol. The Saint Louis c d
sc E conustees el hefe dom Swardto Santia about tron Mundo. What are
you doing? I'm uh, I'mbusy taking off what is called tom you'll
know this. I'm sure the basket. The basket, I did not know
(00:54):
the basket. He's never a littlecava spy. This is cava. Can
you get it? I can't dothat without a turning it, not by
popping it. And it should justgo? Oh what was that? What's
that sound? Cova? Remember wehad a beers beer sponsor for yesh Ellan
(01:15):
Brewery Opell. Yeah, whatever happenedto them? Hey, h my free
glasses? All right? Ray Charlesinevitable, Ray Charles, you know what
I missed seeing him last time hewas here and town he played the pageant.
I thought I wanted to go,and I thought I'll see the next
time. He didn't make it.Do we have Matt on the phone a
(01:38):
ladies and gentlemen and man who knowsthe xes and o's of SDL City and
really, quite frankly go to senoruh the MLS Matt Baker from four Footy.
How you doing Matt? Morning, gents. Sorry I can't be there
in person on this momentous day.Well, hey, we're sipping champagne.
(02:00):
Brother, We're sipping champagne when we'rethirsty. That's a pretty appropriate way to
be digesting this similess city game, that's for sure. Oh man, you
can talk about it if you wantto. You can talk about whatever want
you want, because it's your segment. Yeah, I mean, I gotta
At first, I just got tothank you guys for everything you've been doing.
(02:20):
And hopefully this is uh just apause in in what has become probably
the staple of soccer coverage in SaintLouis in all its forms. And so
my heart's fluttering. I mean,I I do have to I do have
to say that I'm just lucky tohave been given this opportunity to chat with
you guys every week. And talkabout what has become a staple to a
(02:43):
lot of people's weekends of Saint LossCity and the joy that we have to
be able to follow that team thathas led from and been the culmination of
everything that you know, we've workedfrom since since gosh, you guys started
the show, and we're talking nationalteam in European in soccer and the history
of soccer in Saint Louis and lookat where we are now. It's pretty
(03:05):
great, right, Matt. Youdidn't just happen to be on the show.
The reason you're on the show isbecause you and the guys ask the
best questions at the press conferences. Not every time, but most of the
time you had and every time youhad the most insightful questions about formations and
your knowledge of the MLS, particularlythe Byzantine rule structure that they have,
(03:32):
which you know, okay, whateverit is, but you actually know what
the hell they're saying. And combinethat with your understanding of the action on
the field, you got a rarepackage. And that's why you're on this
show. And you're following Mike Sarberand Bill McDermott. You know what are
(03:55):
the odds and I hope we geta chance to do this more because you
know this, it's something special thatyou guys put together, the just the
wide variety of topics, the everyaspect of after his hit on and it's
it's something special. So, youknow, however I ended up at this
place and time, I'm just luckyto be here. And if whether it
(04:16):
was by the graces or by youknow, any any whatever ended up happening,
so talent, I kind of talentwins out. Yeah. I mean
I would rather end up talking inwax nostalgic than talk about the game last
night. But I do suppose that, you know, you might as well
do what you're here to do andtalk about that, right, rip off
the band aid, Matt again, this is your segment. You talk about
(04:42):
whatever you want to. You've alreadylike filled my uh you know, I'm
I'm giving myself the Edmundo pat onthe back and I just threw my shoulder
out. So just hey, talkabout the game, talk about the next
game, talk about whatever you want. Yeah, then the next game is
actually fairly a to look forward to. I mean, everybody's down on the
dumps right now about what is goingon on the field and you can't.
(05:04):
It's it's hard to really digest thetactics last night because it really did seem
like it was two teams just theydidn't Nobody wanted to possess the ball.
Everybody wanted to just run around andcreate counter attacks off of nothing, until
you had just fitness issues galore, where everybody's just sprinting down the field both
ways. But I went into thegame last night looking at the lineup like
(05:27):
everybody did, and thinking, thisis clearly a team that's hurting. This
is a team that is not justhaving regular depth issues or having injury issues
like any team goes through. Butyou're missing just about every single key player
you could possibly be missing, EddieLubin being the last man standing of sorts,
in your key players, in yourspine that you put together specifically to
(05:50):
make this team work. And nowthat we know Klaus is out for six
weeks with an MCL's brain, hejust adds to the list of the latest
issues at Cities going through. Andit's it's tough. It was tough to
go into it thinking much positivity atall, But then of all things,
they went ahead and shocked shocked usall by going up to nothing early on,
(06:13):
and I would I would say thefirst goal is more to that craziness
aspect where you're just trying to justput sheer volume on net. You're going
and just doing everything you can tocreate chaos, and the final third you
just want to eventually hope that theball ins the back of the net when
you're just throwing it at willy nilly. Essentially, everybody who can touch the
ball gets a shot, and justeverybody takes their shot, you know.
(06:36):
Man. I used to play alot of racquetball, and I was pretty
I was pretty good for who Iwas in the competition that I played in,
but then I'd be playing somebody betterand I found myself hoping i'd hit
the ball and hope, well,I hope this. I hope he can't
get this one. I hope hecan't get that, you know. And
(06:58):
that was a sign that I wasn'tgoing to win that game unless the guy
just fell apart, right, Andthat's the watching city this year. I
did not watch the game last nightbecause I wanted to be able to go
to sleep. I had to endurethe debate the other night, and I
just couldn't take any any more disappointment. But so I didn't watch it,
(07:19):
so I don't know. But thelast I watched all the other games,
and it just it strikes me isthat they're hitting it in hoping, but
you can't pass like that. Youwatch the good teams, they complete passes
cities. I don't know what happenedlast night, but they don't seem to
(07:39):
complete a lot of meaningful passes. No, And that's somewhat their style because
they like to spend the ball high. They like to work on second chances.
They like to their their counter attacking, and the quickness to which with
they go direct to goal lends itselfto fewer quality passes. They don't try
and create a lot of build up. They like to go direct to that
(08:01):
final third. And you saw inthe last goal, well, if you
look at the highlights the last goal, they had some what Indiana basketlav had
this nice one to one moment inthe final third, and that's that's pretty
emblematic of how Saint Louis does worktheir passing. It's quickly getting into the
final third and then quickly trying tofind one pass for a player to have
(08:24):
a goal scoring opportunity. They are. They're among the league leaders league leaders
in shot creating actions, but they'reamong the bottom of goal creating actions going
into the game, especially last night, where we knew the goals weren't coming,
but the shot creating actions were soincredibly high. Because what they do
is they get this. We knowthey have the volume of shots and the
(08:45):
amount of passing that goes into itis at least one to one. They
don't have individual players going and creatingshots for themselves, so they'll get the
ball into that final third, they'llhave one shot that they try and work
through and then they get it quickgoal. And you can say that it
doesn't I mean it clearly has itsdrawbacks because this is the first match and
how many that we've actually scored morethan one goal. And that's that's the
(09:11):
efficiency aspect of this that's been reallylacking, and I don't think we're doing
it. We're going to see that. It's hard to see that improving with
the quality of players that we're missingnow off the field, and you have
to hope that going into the nextcouple of weeks, a couple of games,
especially because Wednesday we have a midweekmatch to turn around to that nukeby
Thorson can't continue this kind of formand continue playing off of players like Indiana
(09:33):
Vasalat as well as he is.Now he's going to get that chance to
play up front, up top,and we and we saw glimpse and glimmers
of what he's capable of last nightwhen given that opportunity, and Carnell had
mentioned before that he Nukie Dorrison inparticular, had the training down. He's
been showing everything he needs to atraining now he needs the game minutes.
Now he has the game minutes andhe's scoring. He's scored goals. He
(09:54):
scored one last week that was calledback. He scored on and actually counted
this week. This guy is,he's in the form than we need to
to be able to say that wehave a chance even going into a game
on Wednesday where the team we're playingis the best possible opponent that we could
be gifted in this opportunity right now, whereas we're struggling, we're going through
injuries. San Jose just fired theircoach and they did not get a new
(10:16):
manager. Bounce against the LA Galaxywith the California Classical last night. They
lost three nothings, and so we'regoing into this match as best as we
can given the circumstances for us.Uh oh super secret text line. George
Ganzer, he's one of those refereekind of guys, you know. He
says that says nothing to do withthat. Last night it was eighty eight
(10:39):
percent past completion last night for City. I guess he didn't put for City
Tom because he doesn't know what anidiot I am. I guess, but
that's a pretty high you know what. I think a group ed in the
field was pretty efficient, were theyYeah? Yeah, again, I couldn't
watch it because I had to goto sleep. It was it was definitely
(11:05):
at times men against boys physically,I mean the moment were physically taller,
more and many of the players thatCity had on the pitch, they're they're
(11:28):
young men and they're going to getmore strength. Hey Matt, Hey,
Matt, I uh, I wantyou to finish your points because we might
have Timmerman on the phone from Madridshortly and I don't want to I don't
I don't want to lose that connection. So why don't you finish up your
thoughts? Or do you want tojump to the next game. Yeah,
(11:50):
I'll just I mean, let's justjump to the next game, because there's
only so many takeaways you can havefrom last night. The problem with last
night is that you don't want tohave too many takeaways given the roster that
we ran out and who we're goingto have available for Wednesday. But one
of the other things that happened lastnight is we did not use Brendan mcstorley
or Jay Reid, and so Ilook for them to be available going into
(12:11):
Wednesday. We're going to have moreshort term loans there. You know,
we have to to fill out rosters. The problem with Bradley Carnell's going into
right now is that with matches againstSan Jose and then next week with Colorado,
the space of time doesn't lend itselfto one short term loan applying to
multiple games. So it's one ofthose weird MLS rules, and nobody really
(12:31):
likes or even quite understand why it'sthe way it is, other than it
has to be some players Association collectivebargaining agreement in why short term loans are
the way they are an MLS.And it's important to remember this, and
I go deep into this part rightnow, because it will play a massive
impact on Wednesday. We saw thattwo sub views last night were Kaden Glover
and jose Kajima, and with Brendanmcstory having one MLS appearance left available,
(12:56):
Jay Reid having one MLS appearance leftavailable. Both these guys and when they
appear is just as important as anything, and so whether it's Wednesday to help
manage the load, manage minutes andmidweek match for guys who were running their
tails off like we mentioned a minuteago, or whether it's next week in
that third match in nine days typeof thing next Sunday, you look to
(13:18):
how these guys are going to makean impact. And Michael Vincel in particular,
one takeaway I had last night isthat he didn't sign a short He
didn't sign a short term contract becausea short term loan because he doesn't have
me available. We are not ableto pull him up from city to anymore
because he's maxed out his number ofshort term loans this year. So the
only way he can play is tohave a first team contract. And the
(13:41):
fact that we didn't give that tohim ahead of the game last night,
and we instead went with Jake Kwinskyand Anthony Marcanick as our two center backs.
Having both Tim Parker and josh Yarrolost injuries for last night tells me
all I need to know about theorganization's desire to sign him to a short
first team contract right now. Ithink he will eventually get one, but
(14:03):
there's a for for whatever reason, whether it's roster space or starting the talk
on his contract, they just arenot really anxious to do that right now.
So I'm not looking for that changenecessarily over the next couple of days.
But we need to have Tim Parkerback amongst other people. Matt,
do you think there will be newshort term loans different players announced this week
(14:26):
besides the ones that I don't knowabout. Yeah, I don't know about
this week. Just because you canhave Mcsorleian Reid, I would bet that
they would take advantage of those first. But over the next couple of games,
we have a few more games untilthis league cup break, and we
have to be able to fill outa roster, and so you're using guys
like Mcsorlean Reid and they're not goingto be available after a couple more games.
They're going to have to look atthe next propacity two players in the
(14:48):
next two games. All right, man, we got to go. Thanks
a lot, and this is notthe end. Brother, We'll be talking.
So got Elton John, thanks alot, Thanks Matt, got Elton
on taking us to just a stationI d here. This is a funeral
for a friend. Love Lies Bleedingin My Hands sort of a double song
from Yellow Brick Road sometime if youreally want to get into double if you
(15:13):
want to get into the weeds,Uh, pull up just the vocal backing
on this. The three guys thatwere his backup band, fantastic singers.
Those guys could They could lead mostbands. They really knew how to sing.
They sang very well together. Theywere envy of everyone. Elton John
takes us do uh the mid breakon this. This is k f N
S five ninety the Fanta Steo UnitedSoccer Sunday coming to you live in Saint
(15:37):
Louis, Missouri. Ted. Dowe have the Dean on the phone?
(16:02):
Yes, Oh, live from Spain. The Dean of Saint Louis sacer reportage
himself, Tom, Tim and May. We didn't even need a vase.
We didn't even need a vase.Kind of how you doing, Tom?
I think Hey, guys, let'snew. What's up? Oh? Nothing,
(16:22):
nothing's changing. The world is endingat city Park. How about get
back here? Yeah? When areyou coming home? Uh? In a
few days? Oh good, Well, I have almost worn out my welcome
here in UH in Spain, andso there. I believe the customs officials
are headed towards here and they'll beremoving me from the country very soon.
So I'll be coming home to adifferent world. Yes, will not be
(16:47):
the same Saint Louis that I leftabout a year and a half ago.
It'll it's it's just a different it'llbe it'll be different. And I really
thought that Saint Louis City would wina game before you guys would go off
the air. Tom, we havefourteen year olds asking the first question at
the presser's get back here. I'llbe back Tuesday. I should be at
(17:14):
the game on Wednesday. Good question, Charlie ted from downtown. So where
are you in Spain? I amin Madrid. I am in a Falacial
apartment here in the and just offthe Kaye Alcala in Madrid in the Salamanca
(17:37):
district. So yeah, and giants, a beautiful day. It's seventy seven
degrees. Wow today, I man, it's been spectacular. Me yesterday we
were down in Grenada and it waslike sixty eight. Wow. I mean
a year ago on that same dayit was like one hundred and two and
it was sixty eight. I mean, it couldn't be better. Top sets.
You bring a meteorology, I haveto ask, that's an important question
(18:00):
here. Is it really true thatthe rain in Spain falls mainly on the
plane? You know, we wereup in the hills a few I guess
a week ago, and and itit didn't rain. It rained very lightly
when we were up there. SoI got to think on what I've seen,
and I have seen Madrid, whichI think would be considered being on
(18:22):
a plane mostly it is that.Yeah, yeah, it's mostly been confined
to there. All right, thankyou Tom. I can see snow up.
I can see snow up in themountains. Yeah, not here from
Madrid. B I was in Granada. You could still see snow on some
of the hills in the Sierra Nevadas. Here in Spain. So we're experiencing
a beautiful fault day finish finish upJune here seventy two and cloudy. Okay,
(18:48):
well, good bye. I hopeit'll be still that way and joyable
when I get back on Tuesday night. Nope. So no, no,
Well well thanks, okay, wellthen I'm not coming back. Then welcome
to Manila. The playing lands inMontreal by mistakes or something. But anyway,
so what what's going? What whathappened? I mean, I leave
the country for you know, afew weeks and and just like you know,
(19:12):
what happens happened? People keep gettinghurt. Are you talking about city?
Are you talking about the demise ofour am status? Well? Both
of you really, but uh butwhich word you rather talk about? The
sponsor you have every week? Yeah? Your segment? Yeah, your sponsor
(19:36):
hasn't been paid. Yeah they don't. They're not paying that. They haven't
paid us, and it's well we'vegot you know, we broke your knees,
but no money. Yeah, theletter L has not been forthcoming with
with the payment. So well waita sec a few maybe a couple of
months ago, I got an emailfrom Tom saying if I wanted to get
(19:59):
sponsors or my section of the show, if I wanted to plug something,
I was free to do that.Now. There was no mention made that
I was going to have to giveany of that money to the show.
Oh oh oh, I've made likeabout ten thousand dollars over the last easy,
like two months easy in advertising.Yeah, well you you better keep
(20:22):
that in that shrow calling. SoI mean and this this so this this
week sponsor is out of luck becauseI didn't do their as. Yeah,
so they'll they'll have to wait untilthe show reappears. Well, hey,
Tom, I'm going to interrupt youhere, and I want to thank you
for being part of this show, for the time that you've been part of
(20:47):
the show, and just generally beingreally nice to both me and Ted at
all this brave new world of professionalsports. You know, a lot of
you're going to find this hard tobelieve, but a lot of people aren't
nice. And when when someone isnice, it's it's like it's it's shocking.
(21:08):
And when that's someone is the Deanof Saint Louis Soccer what Santi Elcano
sorry eld ConA. I love that. How do you spell that? D
e c A? And I loveit? El docno eldno, And especially
since you're coming back. Yeah, yeah, so when to have you part
(21:33):
of the show has just been it'sjust been great and the show I think
is better than it's ever been.We we lure them in with trivia trivia.
Oh, that's right, that wereally we really reeled them in.
Hey, we played trivia. Ruthremembers it was my favorite milk cuts,
(21:55):
right, I want the answers beforehand, though not really. Well, it's
been it's been my pleasure. Andthe great thing has always been that I
could have fun with you guys becauseI always knew that no matter what I
said, no one was listening. So that really made it's so much simpler
(22:15):
to be on the show that, you know, I could let my hair
down as it were, and uh, you know, and uh and do
it. But you guys have beenI mean gracious and cordial and bend over
backwards to bend over backwards, andso it's been, it's been. It's
been great. And uh, youknow, and I know I've been stubborn.
(22:36):
I know that you've been I mean, Tom, I don't know if
you have the logs, but it'sprobably been how long has the show has
been on the air, Thirteen thirteenyears, you know, almost thirteen thirteen
years. Well you should have knownthirteen would be the would be the year
it ended then probably that. Uhand and I tell you when when the
show started, I thought, youknow, one, you know, maybe
(22:56):
two, you know, weeks wouldbe the most. But years is pretty
impressive, A lot more impressive thantwo weeks. Yes, yes, I
mean I remember the second week itwas like, will they be back?
And no, you were back?So but no, it's it's it's been,
it's it's been fun. And uhand again yeah, I've been stubborn.
(23:18):
You were, I mean, you'vebeen bugging me about this for years.
And then finally when I thought Ihad told me to say I could
go on the show and uh andonce actually once I know it was ted.
We ever figured out phones, weever figured out that I could dial
in. Uh. Then it becameso much simpler to become a fixture on
the longest running soccer show. Iuh in St. Louis. I read
(23:41):
a book about it. Uh Edisonand uh I figured it out. Uh
oh, super super super secret textline here is are soon to be former
sponsor. I might have slept pastthe opening of the show. Have the
brilliant soccer minds discussed how the Germansfixed Yesterday's bench? Has it been to
(24:06):
discussed how the listenership can continue tofollow this brain trust. Have we talked
about the local roots and nationwide results? Santi, could you give a quick
plug to n GK Law Firm dotcom in Spanish in a Spanish in Espanola,
I'm going to try and show deoi comotolos shows as jest for nostromigo
(24:33):
Mark Niemeier the and GK Law Fernpunto com Saint Louis Conras's localstretos Nacionalists and
that and that, ladies and gentlemen, just saved me fifteen million dollars.
Nice thanks, Santi. You knowwhat's going to really impress him is the
fact that he heard his name pronouncedby the Spanish speaker. He's just that's
(24:56):
just gonna that he heard his name. That's gonna make his hair grow back.
What's good fight? What's that is? The sponsor I was supposed to
have for this week was in factBig Bill's Bells, which is a choice
for discerning bells for hotel front desks, dentist offices and radio shows for over
(25:18):
one hundred years. So there yougo, there you go. I was
gonna plug. I was gonna plugtheir Prestige series, which features the bell
found from the front desks of someof the finest hotels in the world.
Palmer House in Chicago, Biltmore inLos Angeles, the Oregana in Tokyo.
(25:38):
How good your customers will feel whenthey ring that bell and hear one of
those bell tones from a famous hotelaround the world. Pretty damn good.
I think you know, Tom,you should line them up as your sponsors.
Get them, get them, getthem on the line. They'll kick
in. Hey Tom, Yeah,we gotta let you, We gotta let
you go. Yeah we do.We're running up your phone. Don't go
(25:59):
up. Thanks guys, Thanks guysfor making collect and and and I hope
you're you're resurrected, uh, youknow in some in a new life and
uh and call me then we will. They're great. What L D L.
They can see you guys. Thisweek great song by the Who.

Uh Pete town and Pete Townsend singsthis first lead. Then Daltrey comes in.
But on the piano, Tom isa person you'll recognize. Nicky Hopko
was thinking that who played piano foreverybody And it's actually one of the original
Rolling Stones. But they didn't wantthat many guys in the band, so
they made him sort of a theydon't want to share, share that exactly.

wanted to say thank you. Ihave had the honor to be invited to
this show a few times throughout thelast you said thirteen years. I thought
it was more like twenty. Itfeels like twenty. My better half also
(29:21):

me. So GenZ says she strugglesafter late city games to sleep, and
so I couldn't watch it. Sowell, No, it wasn't about that,
it was it was really well.Yeah, I guess she was working,
right, I know Santi was working. Yeah, but again, get
worked up. That's what happened. So you're representing the family, represent the
(29:45):

to say thank you and look forwardto the next iteration. Well, I'm
becoming convinced that there will be thankyou very much. And Ruth, do
you got anything else to say?Well? You do. I know you
say you didn't, but you dobecause you got to tell me how many
people were at that game? Uhin Azteca. Yeah, over one hundred
(30:07):
thousand. And who was playing?Who? It was a was a World
Cup. There a lot of teamsplaying there. There's a movie. There's
a movie out about it right now? What's a movie? Is it called
Ruth? I don't know. Idon't know anything. What am I doing.
I've been cleaning my garage. Wefortunately, here's how, here's how
(30:30):
I've been putting this off for tenyears. When we moved into the place,
and just start sticking everything in thegarage, you know, and literally
couldn't get anything else, and youcouldn't hardly get the cars in. So
I said, well, you knowthis, this has been going on for
a few years. Sally was travelinga lot, just you know, sometime
before Sally, you know, goeson a longer trip. I'll do it.
(30:51):
Well, COVID hit she didn't goon any more trips. Well,
she's on a long trip now.So I thought, okay, I'm going
to start this, and I wasso into it. When I got the
call Wednesday about this show, Ijust said, oh yeah, and I
put the phone down and I wentback to cleaning the garage. You know,
because I was like focused on thisand said, well I better text

you gonna do this? We gotto get tie in because TI is here
now and you haven't really said anything. Why don't you say what you got
(31:33):
to say? You got to saysomething, ed Mundel Well, thank you,
mister Schwartz. It's been great doingthis and I have It's amazing how
much non soccer information I've learned,as well as a great deal about the
game. I'm the admitted novice inthe studio. I never played the game
other than in great school for aboutsix weeks one time. So it's been
(31:56):
a long time ago, and it'sit's it's been fun, and I've enjoyed
UH hearing the stories. I've enjoyedthe wide variety of guests we've had,
UH and the relationships reformed with himand I I like Tom. I am
looking forward to the next chapter andwe will not be on this UH station,
but we will be apparently apparently theirchoice, not ours. Bastards.
(32:21):
But we will, we will,we will, we are not that,
we are not going away. Imean I'm going to raise my glass of
champagne here, which, by theway, this is this. We drink
this. So we salute to uhand his shepherding of this, and to
(32:44):
Ted for running the board and learningthe run. I can't say too much
about that. Yeah, tough skill, Ted. We're just all here babbling
in the dark and not on theair. So well. I also wanted
to thank Ted and and thank theshow too, but Ped for really being
a women's soccer supporter and raising thegame. He's really a maker of the
(33:05):
game, for the women's side ofthings, and I want to thank him
for all the opportunities. Amen,Amen Ted. Ted has raised my interest
in the game exponentially, and Ienjoy watching the game. It's a great
game. I want to say rightnow, I've taught Ted everything he knows
about right, But I can't becauseit would be another blatant lie. Okay,
so you had your SONTI, yougot anything else you got to get
(33:28):
out to get it out now,I have a whole speech, go ahead,
No, no, just want tosay thank you guys for opening up
this space to me. I've beendoing things in the Spanish for a while,
but never thought I was going tobe on the airwaves in an English
on the space. You've been agreat, great addition to the show.
(33:50):
Thanks for inviting me. It tookme out of my comfort zone a little
bit, but I really appreciate it. And so I was saying earlier,
and I have really enjoyed like allthe guests in this show, and it's
about like hearing all their experiences andstories. So I have really enjoyed it,
and I hope the next chapter issomething like this too super secret text

line from the dream yet another hiatus. I like that, even if I
woke up with the traveling Wilbury's endof the line in my head. This
show lasted so long because it isunique among sports shows. Not only does
it cover soccer of every stripe, but it also touches world, travel,
science, the arts, music, even chess. Yes, remember that,
(34:37):
yes, chess bitch, the chessbitch, that's for sure. There is
a even chess not for us thestandard sports formula of those shows that are

(35:42):
Wow. Truly a great achievement andone of the best things that happen in
Saint Louis Radio. I am honoredto play a small part on the next
on to the next iteration. Yes, I woke up about twenty minutes ago,
so I missed the first shook ofthe show. PPS Russell leees for
a month and it all goes to, hey, one, h recognize three

I want to recognize Chuck Core,Chuck God love Chuck Core. I
want to recognize George Bessie George talkabout giving our show some some pedigree,

We were on the inside track ofeverything going on in Rio from the
time they were planning the World Cupthrough the Olympics, and he told us,
(36:52):
look, it doesn't matter, it'sgonna look good on TV. Right,
They're gonna make it look good onTV. Every So I love radio.
I've always loved radio, and thefact that I'm on the radio has
been a dream come true. Andthe fact that I'm running the board for
(37:13):
a radio show and I have hostedshows, planned two hour shows and hosted
them with a group of women wholove women's soccer, which was my in
do the show. The young womanthat I request, it's Tom to get
(37:37):
on the show. Yale Aberbush isnow the general manager of an NWSL team
that won the league last year. All right, and I just finished the
Champagne nice, So, folks,Tom, tell me do things. Anywhere
(37:59):
you are in the world. Youmentioned Bob Marley or who's your club?
You are in? You are infootball, we go it. Soccer is
truly the beautiful game. And ifyou're watching the Euros and you're watching COPA
(38:23):
America. Observe the athletes during theirnational anthem, Observe the crowd shots during
the national anthem. It is trulysomething special. I apologize for my voice
(38:45):
the last nine months. With thehelp of doctor Jack Eies and Weiss,
I hope to have a new anothershow, regular, another speaking tone.
Do you proceed in my life? The more comfortable speaking So, folks,
(39:07):
it's been really special. I didn'tknow Tom, I didn't know Santi,
I didn't know Gail, I didn'tknow Georgia Jen a new tie from when
I used to go to the Steamersgames with my girlfriend in high school.
And I didn't know Ruth. ButRuth's relationship is truly a deep felt love
(39:35):
for a friend who is a oneof a kind person. So Ruth,
I really jerish our friendship. Apioneer is a pioneer here for sure.
Sure, no thanks, Hey playthat music? Who dist pirf days?
(40:00):
What's the worst day? He is? Now? We slip stampagne. But
Wen, that guy in the lifelived positive nisol And then you don't know,
you know, you know, it'snot so happy birthday to us last
(40:21):
week? Ruth? Yeah, becauseokay, because you two share the same
day. Yeah, the perfect daysweet sixteen twenty eighth, it's a perfect
day six two eight, Hal,who's coming in a second? Super grandpa,
super grandpa? Okay, say something, you only got a second.
I live next to your like youryour nephew or one of as many one
(40:44):
of as many God children. Probablythank you so much, Tom, I
really can't tell you how much Iappreciate everything you've done for the Hall of
Fame, honestly, and you'll fall. We'll find a place for you.
I finally regarded in mission. Wewill find a place for Listen. You
know what that reminds me of Backin the day, long time ago,
(41:06):
when I first started getting involved inmy plant business, I had a trade
deal with this guy. I ranan Italian restaurant. It was a good
a good cook and at a bigtime at restaurant. He was doing his
own and he says to me.He says to me, I say,
hey, thanks man, I reallylike doing this. Blah blah blah.
(41:28):
But he says, Tom, Jim, I want you to hear this.
Stop shaking hands for a minute. He says, Tom, we wash our
hands together. And that was informativeto my life. And in a way,
that's what this show has been. We're washing our hands together. You
know, we're well. Okay,Ty just gave me some germ X moisturizing.
(41:52):
The original was that in the bathroom. No, we leave this,
we leave the sun, all right, we sprints uh super secret text line.
Uh. Dave Lang. Hey,guys, thanks for the countless hours
(42:12):
of enjoyment you have given to allof us. It's been an honor to
have participate. And hope you returnedto the airwaves. Thanks. Thanks Dave.
We'll return to something that's for sure, all right. Jim, you
gotta go, Thank you man.Appreciate it. Church. I can't believe
you have time to fit in church. We got we got basketball this afternoon.
(42:34):
Nice all right, Jim Maker,Thanks a lot, man. It
means a lot to make Jim allright, Tai kyo, it's incredibly uh
important and lucky for me to havemet you. I I can't tell you
how much it means to have youhere by our sides on this last day.
(42:59):
You know, I again, Ifeel pretty confident we're going to still
be doing something. I don't knowthat. By the way, folks,
this is not the first time thishas happened to us. We've had holidays
before, hiatuses, we're gonna haveone. I'd like a few weeks off,
but uh, tay Ko has beenin this area of my life,
(43:23):
one of the most important people thatI've known, gracious beyond belief, just
like his dad. His dad didn'tcare if you didn't know anything about soccer,
because, let's face it, SaintLouis, there are a lot of
soccer snobs and I didn't play soccer. I didn't know anything about soccer.
(43:45):
But from day one, tay Kiosaid, without saying the words, hey,
you want to know about soccer,You've come to the right place,
dog, because we're going to tellyou about soccer. And no like oh
you know, looking down, You'renever looking down. As knows of me.
This is a guy who's broadcast countlessWorld Cup games on national TV,
(44:08):
played at a very high level, represented his country, and he says to
me, a guy who knew nothingother than I liked the sport said to
me, welcome aboard, and Ted, I know you feel the same way.
And it's given me us a levelof confidence to do something we didn't
(44:30):
know anything about. I didn't knowanything about radio other than listening to it.
Well, you knew a lot aboutradio because you were on all the
time. Well, I was fortunateenough that when my playing career was over,
they put me in the broadcast booth. But what it allowed me to
do is continue to be connected tothe sport I love. And it's always
(44:52):
been an honor and a privilege tocome in here, join you guys because
of the passion and because you know, you named the studio after my dad,
Harry Kyo Studio. But uh,you know, ted touch upon it.
It's there's there's a passion for this, for this game, and it
is the beautiful game, and it'sworldwide. We've we've talked about it,
(45:13):
and you see it in the Euros, in the Copa America, and and
the fact is we all come tolove each other through the game because there's
the stories and you talked about uhuh, you know what, whether you
what you say on the air, whether it's true, whether it's just a
story right, And and it remindsme a little bit when Bill McDermott and
(45:36):
I were still doing World Couture ABCand ESPN. We were talking to one
of the ABC or ESPN producers onetime before a match and there was something
that came up that we were goingto use it on the air or not,
and we weren't. It was beforethe internet, so you couldn't really
fact check everything, and uh,and the producer goes, oh, hey,
never let the truth get away agood story. And that's what this
(45:59):
is about, you know. Thisis about sharing stories. It's about sharing
places that everywhere, places that everyonehere has been, and things that they've
felt and experienced, and it's justwonderful to share it. And I've had
a great time being a part ofit. Well, you know, it's
funny when you say that, that'sthat's kind of my wife, Sally's motto,
(46:19):
has never let the truth get inthe way of a good story.
And I and I realized she's neversaid this, of course, but I
just realized from observing story listening toher retail stories that I was part of.
I don't really know that that's true, but it's a really good story,
so you go with it. SoI remember a bumper sticker that you
say, hey, he who diesor one who dies with the most toys
(46:42):
wins, and I think it's onewho dies with the best stories are the
most stories are are most friends, you know, because to me, life
after death is people. One ofthe greatest men I've ever met in my
life was the father of the sponsorof this show, Bobney Maher, and
(47:06):
he is a big time Christian andI'm not I'm not a believer, but
knowing him helped me to understand beliefand belief is I think a real big
part of life. And what I'vecome to believe is that life after death.
(47:28):
Your dad has life after death becausewe're still talking about him, right,
all the love he poured into us, all the love he poured in
it. You know, you getto this age. I turned seventy four
this week and things, everything takeson a new meeting. You cry at
(47:52):
the drop of a hat. Yourgrandkids are the greatest things that ever had.
You know, all these things,But you know, not many people
are lucky enough to get times likethis, and we are all really lucky
here for different reasons. But I'mthe luckiest of them, all of all
of you, because all of youhave had great lives. I've had an
(48:15):
incredible life that I really didn't deserveto have. I just I kind of
fell into it. I got reallylucky I met Sally and for some reason,
well, I had an extra bottlethat love potion number nine and I
used it and it worked. Butyou know, she's the one that encouraged
(48:37):
me to do all this stuff.I really don't even know where I am
right now. I've a drinking chempade. You know what's cool though, We
are in a city with a majorleague soccer yeah team, and I think
this little thing here around this broadcasthad something to do with it. And
(48:58):
wow, that's too kind, andit gives us, uh, gives us
a chance to really talk about ateam that we own, right that we
go and watch, and and whata year they had last year. I
mean it was. It's still incredibleto think back all the stuff that happened
and and a lot of it wasjust luck. Oh yeah, and now
the luck luck. Hey, that'sthat's sports, right, right. This
(49:22):
is ying was last year, Yangis this year. It's just the way,
right, Ruth. I was justthinking about the Kansas City Current,
uh and them opening the stadium, and I really wanted to look at the
statistics of the staff. I knowthey made a lot of changes. You
got five you know, you dida lot of good things, but just
the belief, the electricity. Itwas kind of like Saint Louis City last
(49:43):
year, you know, the electricityin the stadium, just how you felt
when you were there. I've seenyou there several times and you know,
it's, uh, it's the sameway with Kansas City this year. You
know, it's they're undefeated. Youknow there, they're you know, electricity,
it's that And I think a lotof that comes from this kind of
stuff, this grassroots efforts, talkabout your sport in your city, and
(50:07):
the kind of guess and quality ofguests you have on this show, and
the free for all it is.It's fantastic. Well, the great Dan
Flynn told me one time that soccerculture is little things like this show,
And at the time he said it, I was like, I didn't really
(50:28):
think it was such a little thing. But you know, you're right in
terms of the cosmos, it's absolutelyspot on, right. And the more
I've thought about that comment, themore it's sunk in, and man,
it's sinking in like a ton rightnow. But also a big thing is
(50:49):
the Taylor family, the Cavin Ohyeah, right, that stepped up right.
Oh, And they've really done somethingnot only for the sport we love,
but for this community, right yeah, well we got a few minutes
left, yes, sir, fiveminutes left, four minutes left, Edmonds,
that's where your name is. Willyou still be ed Mundo? Well
yeah, we're gonna still go.Yeah. I was at Mundo before I
(51:12):
was here on there. Yeah, you were from basketball. I just want
to back up and touch on oneother thing, uh, for people who
do like the history of the sport, uh, and I would like to
learn a little bit more about it. You've heard us talk about the USA
England game many, many times, including this morning. You can stream that
for free on Amazon Prime and onto b as well as fan Dango.
(51:35):
Really yeah, plex, I don'tknow, do you know that time?
But the Game of Their Lives orthe Miracle Match and some guy named Zachary
ty Taylor or something or other andhas played your dad. Yeah he Imprisoners,
No, he was. He wasthe people might know him as the
older brother on Tool Time or nottool Time? What was it Tim show?
(51:55):
The uh? Tim Tim the comedian? Yeah, but Home Improvement?
Yeah, he was the older sonof the three there on Home Improvement.
Home that is so great that you'reable to bring the cultural reference to our
show. It's been for all thatis said, free for all, Ruth
Arker, has that not been ahallmark of this this show? Talking about
(52:22):
the weird and bizarre you have tohave this show is utterly ridiculous. It
is utter ridiculous. Well, ithas been. Paul Duker. You mentioned
Paul Duker, a great friend ofours, but a really good friend of
yours. Well, a guy wemiss. I think of him almost every
(52:45):
day anytime on a on a soccerfield, I think of my dad.
I think of Paul Duker, Ithink my old teammates, Slowbo and all
the all the great guys that havecome along and been a part of this
great sport. Yeah, Dave Solomonjoins us, given David Mike feels weird
of sitting on this side for achange. Yeah, how you doing,
man? You know, it's beena crazy week. And I stayed up
(53:08):
late to watch that City game tothe end where it seemed like luck just
magically returned for about twenty minutes, but I just had to come back for
one last time. That's very nicefor now to show up, at least
for now. That's that's that's basicallywhere we are. Folks have no idea
what's going to happen next, butsomething's going to happen next. And since
(53:29):
I probably have a head start onmost of you in terms of the age
thing, it's that here's one kindof life lesson that you start to learn
once that your first number is aseven. Life's about closing chapters, right,
I mean, it's just basketball forme. Basketball. I played basketball
(53:53):
sixty years. I played basketball, not very well as you could remember it,
but I loved it. And thenCOVID hit and I just kind of
lost interest in a lot of things, but working out with certainly one of
them. And then I couldn't playbasketball anymore, and it killed me.
(54:16):
And I like just spent nights andnights, Oh I can do and I
just go up there and I justcouldn't play. And I had to come
to grips with this thing of like, well, you can't play basketball anymore.
And then I started looking around peoplethat are you know that first number
is in a seven. It's aneight. You mentioned Chuck Korr, you
(54:37):
know, just very good for GeorgeVessey, very good friends who life changes
when you really changes when you hiteighty. But the the story of life
is that your life is a bunchof chapters. Life's a book, and
you you got to close the bookon certain chapters. And today, in
(55:01):
about ninety seconds, we're going toclose this chapter of our book. And
I am so proud of it,but mostly proud of the people I've met,
not all of them, but man, the people here, it's just
the finest kind. And there's Franztake his head. Well, ladies and
(55:30):
gentlemen, one last time from thestudio here, thank you for joining us.
This has been Sto United Soccer Sunday, coming to you from the and
we're very proud to say this theHarry Kiyo Studio at KF and S five
ninety the Fan in Saint Louis,Missouri. The show has been brought to
you by Markniemeier, who has beenour underwriting sponsor for a low these many
years, and he owes us somemoney and back pay, but that's a
(55:52):
separate issue we'll get to down theroad. I owed him more than look
for us on our podcast. Youcan find us there. You can find
us on kfins dot com. Assmean that site, stace. Let's let's
not go there. And so forlet me run through Hey, watch out
