Every morning. Yeah, that couldbe my band, that sun Dog doing
that almost could we do that song? You probably do it better than No,
it's actually it's not. It's apretty easy song to play. I
was surprised when me I like thatwhen they started calling him Bachmann Turner overweight.
Yeah, well that gets to,uh, what Jim and I were
(00:53):
just talking about off the air aboutif you want to be healthy when you
retire, you better start working onit when you're in your forties, if
not before. I mean, he'syou know, he's the living example of
why you state fit because you don'tknow what you know, you go in
for a I hate to go tothe doctr anymore because every time I think,
oh Jesus now yeah yeah, becauseyou're like, oh no, you're
(01:15):

(01:36):
I got an introduction for him,get it hit it. Here we go
one, two three, not onlythe man who knows the x's and o's
of City sc but also the guywho turns up on your TV. Oh,
Matt Baker, Matt, are youthere. I'm here Tom having going.
Oh my god, it sounds likeyou're next door compared to talking to
Timmerman. Just just I'm walking through. I'm walking through the Great Wolf Lodge
(01:59):
Hall. So wow, definitely notnext Door'll still live in that Kansas life.
Don't get your phone wee so right, So, Matt, were you
aware of the fact that you wereon TV last night? I heard about
it, Yeah, and then watchingthe highlights this morning, I saw a
couple of moments. Yeah, thatwas pretty cool, although you were on
(02:21):
your phone texting, probably some update, some update for Flyover Footy, texting
and tweet all right, making somenotes, making some notes. Oh,
this is just thrilling to me thatI can actually hear you, because the
last few calls have been rough.Okay, so Matt, let's tell me
what you saw last night. Well, offensively, I saw more of the
(02:42):
same from Saint Louis City the pastfew weeks. This is a team that's
really getting into their grooves. They'reclicking and they've they've gotten into exactly where
they need to be at this point. Offensively, they're still creating chances galore.
They're getting shots off Hyer shots atthat At times their transition is working
incredibly well. They're leveraging Clouds appropriatelyin ways where they're using him as kind
(03:07):
of a build up mechanism, playingit up to Klouds and then allowing him
to play it off to our attackingthis in Saleo and all notably. But
everything's connecting. That's the thing Inoticed so so many times last night as
our lines were connecting, not justin the way we were building up,
but we could we could do itmultiple ways, you know, depending on
what s Case was giving us.We could send the ball along in the
(03:29):
effective we could hold up play anddraw them to us and then move the
ball on the ground. It wasit was just a complete performance. And
this is becoming a trend that we'reable to say about Sant Louis City.
Offensively is complete performances. Let meask you this, because I'm interpreting in
my way. I don't see thegame the way you see the game.
(03:50):
But what last night I felt,oh and I guess this is what you
were just saying. I felt likeI could recognize what they were doing exactly
like it. The way they wereusing Klaus last night was like, Oh,
this is now I get this teamagain, because for the first games
of the season, a lot oftimes I'm watching I'm thinking, to me,
(04:11):
it just looked like a bunch ofguys running around. Yeah, and
that's the one thing that Klaus isable to do now, is you can
We've talked about it so much thatwe're identifying how he fits into this offense
best. And when you're when you'reanalyzing something and you're predicting something and then
you see it on the field, that's that's the true measure of principles being
applied in the system working as youwanted to. And we're seeing that in
(04:35):
what Klaus is able to give andwe're and we're seeing it and how he's
able to have this offense built aroundhim. Uh, continue, because I
want to ask you about Big Samat some point, but I want you
to get your points out of theway first. Well, I guess the
(04:55):
way this offense is going, you'renot missing him. And that's kind of
the point. In the second half. I think we were able to see
the subs work as they needed toto continue that play, and that's kind
of, I guess, lead intothe same conversation exactly what you want to
see? Hey, did you know? I think I don't know if we
talked about this after the press conferenceabout the difference in Ostrok this year as
(05:19):
opposed to last year. Did we? I think we talked about that,
talk about what you see in himthis year that you didn't see last year.
Well, he's asked to do differentthings this year, and that's that's
one thing he's grown his game with. And I think the difference in Ostrok
(05:39):
is just what he's asked to do. He's a great ball handler. He
can he can dribble with the ball, he can see the field very well.
His vision is pretty outstanding, andhis positioning as well pretty outstanding.
This year, he's asked to playthat central role, whereas last year,
so he was asked to be alittle more out on the wings regularly.
He wasn't given an opportunity to benot just central mid, but attacking central
(06:02):
mid. We had players like EduLuvin, Indiana vast Eleven and Azy Jackson
who would kind of box him outof those positions just by sheer virtue of
where they were being best utilized, and so Ostrak was more of a utility
man in that regard. This year, Carnell's asked him to be focused on
that central midfield spot by necessity becauseLuvin's out, But now he can help
(06:25):
to connect the lines with Chris Durkin, who is best suited as a number
six, falling a little more deepinto the midfield, and Ostrak is given
that freedom to possess the ball, move the ball up the field in that
middle of the field goal and hereally does seem to excel where he's able
to move the ball between the channelsand just have a little more freedom as
(06:46):
opposed to working out wide on thewings, which is what Carnell wants his
wide attacking mids to do. Andhis the confidence level that I mean,
it just really struck me the otherday at the press conference about Man,
this is just a different guy.He was so confident in the media room.
Last year he wasn't. He wasextra I thought, anyway, really
(07:10):
shy. But this year, Man, I I just noticed a huge difference
in the person how relaxed he waswith the media. Uh this year.
I don't know, did you pickup on that? Yeah, I definitely
picked up on it. I thinkthat speaks to his confidence overall. So
when you're when you're talking to themedia, it's you know, your performance
(07:31):
on the field, you if you'reif you're not happy with that, it's
going to carry itself off the field. And to see himself carry himself,
and and the demeanor that he has, the confidence, it's just it's kind
of one of those he's just oozingit at this point. Yeah, he
is, really he's a very goodterm. He's oozy confidence. It's he's
just really feeling that. And youyou get it from guys, and you're
(07:53):
used to get it from guys likeIndiana As when he's in formed. You
get it from Klaus and Roman Burkeand Tim Park those kinds of players to
play at such high levels all thetime, and we're used to it.
But now we're seeing it from guyslike Tomas Ostrok And I'm sure I'm sure
if we heard more from them, you know, we'd we'd hear it from
Saleo at this point. You know, we could probably probably hear it from
Rasmus All at this point too, after the few games that he's had and
(08:16):
his ability to just be a partof this chance creating system. But yeah,
when you're getting these guys in thein that type of a mindset and
the confidence, then you're seeing notjust I mean Ostrak is a pretty good
prime example, but he's also youcan you can read this in so many
of the other players, and that'swhy having a lineup that mirrored what we
(08:37):
saw last week, the continuity inthe high level that they're performing is pretty
exciting because we really didn't have thisfor City last year and we're still missing
pieces, right like Joki Nilsen stillnot back and he's one of our top
choice center backs at du Luvin's stillnot there. So when you're having consistency
without these players and you're scoring goalsand you're having offensive threats, that's exciting
(09:01):
to see because you can carry thisfrom game to game and you're able to
see how they can continue to buildoff of it. Now, there is
the other side of the coin, which is we allowed three goals and we
were away and this was you know, MLS is difficult to way league.
You know, it's all these thingsmitigating circumstances, but at the end of
the day, I think that's theone area that Saint Louis has to work
on, is they're no good atcoming from losing positions to gain a point
(09:26):
or three. Now they need towork on holding their winning positions, something
Sporting has been dreadful at the pastthree games. But Saint Lois, now
that's their next step is you getthe lead, you hold the lead,
and you run away with all threepoints. But man, you made the
point earlier about look at the playersthey're missing. I mean, they're not
missing a midfielder. They're missing oneof the best midfielders in the league.
(09:50):
We don't know how good Nielsen reallyis because I mean he seems to be
a good player. He hasn't provenit to the extent that Luvin did.
And the whole deal with Sam ifwe if you want to touch on that
at all, is uh. Imean, he's a pretty good player.
It's not like we're missing three guys. We're missing pretty big pieces of the
(10:11):
team, right and Josh and JoshArrow and joh Yeah. So the death
josh Ar Jibulu Blom, the guysyeast year we thought of as our yeah,
must have players in central midfield, like, yeah, these we are
missing a lot of pieces, andthat speaks to the depth that we have.
And at this point, the depthis being tested and it's coming out
I think, uh excelling. ButSam is a big question mark that we're
(10:33):
going to have over the next Imean, I don't know how long this
is going to progress. It's notgood for the team, no, but
they're able to play through it.I mean, the performances we saw yesterday,
they're clearly not focused on then ableto move on and perform with this
going on. And I think that'sone of the things that Carnell did is
whatever whatever happened, you know,he he felt that he clearly felt that
(10:54):
it was a detriment to what washappening to the players training on the field
and potentially in a game, andso for better for workers, he removed
that issue from the equation. Andthat's why Sam training on his own is
such a big deal, because it'snot just isolated to Sam, it's Carnell
felt that based on the words thathe said, Sam wasn't giving us all,
he wasn't showing as much as theother players. And what Carnal needs
(11:16):
from one of his players, andso rather than have that infect so to
speak, other players, potentially,he removed that equation from the formula.
And now it's not just it isone on one with Sam, but it's
also something that by removing him, you're not letting that be an issue to
the team in their day to daytraining. Okay, hey Matt, we
(11:37):
got a role. How do peoplecatch you? Search Flyerfooty on podcasts at
Flyberfooty on Socialism and for me it'sat Matt Baker STL all over the social
Thank you so much, the manwho knows the x's and o's of Saint
Louis citysc Matt Baker, Thanks Matt, safe travels. Thanks, thank you.
Ladies and gentlemen. You're listening toKF an S five ninety the Fan
(12:01):
as well as the STL United SoccerSunday show coming to you from the studios
there in the Harry Kio studios. And I think now it's time. Oh
get back, sit down, holdon, hold on, put grab an
off, turn that off for asecond. I let it go in.
Then turn around, somebody grab theI'm gonna I'll jump up and grab it
off. Thinks that I'm gonna pulla. I'm gonna call an audible Omaha,
(12:24):
omaha. So Russell, I wantto do the scores in the ten
thirty hours segment. Is that okay? As you say, okay, because
we got Jim, I think forabsolutely more minutes. Let's uh, so
are we in the segment? Yes, we're in. All right, we're
the segment. Okay. Uh andwe'll we'll do the tango music. Okay.
(12:46):
I want to hear something Jim's anecdotesand he includes in the book.
You're telling us some of your dravailswith the Rollings Company. Hold on,
we're with We're with Jim Tjians incase you're just tuning in. Uh.
Jim is the author worked with JeffKushno named famous in my family on the
(13:07):
book Saves. It's the amazing storyof the American goalkeeper Jim Tijins. All
right, Ted, Jim, youshare some of your anecdotes, some of
the lighter things about your life story. So I'll show I'll share a pretty
good rowling story. Back when McGuirehit all those home runs, I think
you said it wasnt eight ninety eight, okay, I was managing the rawling's
(13:31):
Mark McGuire relationship at that time.Wow, why I was managing, I
don't know, but I shouldn't havebeen managing. But a long story,
shark. The year he hit seventy, I met his agent for the first
time in May and I had topick him up from the airport. It
was really warm that year, andhis agent's named Jim Milner, big guy
like Mark. He's got a navyblue blazer on and a blue shirt and
(13:54):
I'm picking him up in an oldChevy S ten Blazer two door, one
of those things. I was prettyyoung at the time, so I didn't
turn my air conditioning on on theway to work in the morning because it
was generally sure cool at six thirtyin the morning and yourself guy exactly.
And I didn't turn it on atnight when I drove home at night because
I didn't care. I was justgoing home. I didn't care how heart
(14:16):
warmut was in the car. Soanyway, I figured I better get the
ac on. When I picked JimMilner up at the airport, it doesn't
go on, and they got thecars on the highway pressing the accelerate.
It's like gulping, like jerking backand forth. I get down to drop
him off at Bush Stadium. Heopens the door and all the greeny and
he freezes pouring out of the car. He's like, hey, Jim,
(14:39):
you know, I think he gota problem here. I'm like, yeah,
I think so, so really ultrambeat. So fast forward to the
end of the year, Marks hithis you know, I don't think he's
hit seventy yet, but he's hita boatload of home runs. He's yeah,
he's grossing the record. Yeah. And the president of Rawlings calls me
into his off and he's got aset of keys in his hand. He
(15:03):
said, his name's Howard Howard Keene. Uh from over in Illinois. His
son Scott Key, or one ofhis sons was Richard Keen was a big
basketball player with the Alinai in theday. So Howard's got a set of
keys in his hands, and hesays, Jim, he said, Jim
Hillmerguire's agent calls me and says,Howard, we got to get together and
buy Teachings a new car. AndHoward Keene says, oh, don't worry
(15:26):
about Jim, We'll take care ofit. So, uh, I see
the keys in his hand, andI know what's going on. I actually
know what's going on. And I'mthinking, oh, geez, he's got
me like a four tours or something. So he calls me over to the
window and he points. He says, hey, you see that tourist down
there in a lot, and I'mgoing on a crap. He says,
Well, that blazer next to itis yours, he says, he says.
(15:48):
Milner calls me and says, wegot to get Teachings a new car.
Wow. So that was kind ofa funny story. And uh,
well he he had a relationship withJohnny Landoh right, maybe it was from
Landolph. I don't know. Ohyeah for a while. Yeah, they
owned their own bidding and lot.Yeah they did. Yeah, there you
go. I don't know if youremember all the commemorative bats we did every
(16:08):
time mark it a monumental home runwith a company called Nico Sport. Yes.
Well it ended up being very profitablefor both McGuire and Rowling, so
I think that that's why the gesturewas done. But U we also,
I drove a new blazer. Islike a lot of bats. That's that's
(16:30):
how bets? Would that be alot of bats? Yeah? I bought
a couple. I bought the commemorativebaseballs. I bought a sixty two in
a seventies and then there was ait wasn't about a figurine of Mark with
a glove. Okays first basements.Man, I still have that, and
I have to admit it was putaway for a while during all the extermath,
(16:53):
but you know what, it's stillI had fond memories of watching that
season with my father. It wasa heck of a season. So you
got to know maguire a little bit, a little bit, Yeah, I
mean you might take what's your takeon him. There's a lot of controversy.
Yeah, I mean at the time, you know he was you know,
we weren't friends right by anyway. You know, it was professional relationship.
(17:15):
I did what I had to do. He did what he had to
do. We had a we hadto deal with Crackerjack where we gave we
gave away two winners to meet himat spring training and I met them down
there, took him to the CardinalClubhouse and way to farm. He did
it, so, you know,he did everything we asked him to do
at the time. So I haveno issues with him whatsoever. But you
know, again, we were notfriends hanging out, had a good relationship.
(17:38):
But see, to me, that'sthat's a better that's a better example
of what kind of guy a personis because he didn't feel like I'm sure
at that point in his life hedidn't feel like he owed anybody anything.
Now he sure as hell didn't work. Oh some guy from Rawlings right something
right. The funny thing about thosedays is the players. You know,
our corporate office was out and Fenton, and they didn't really understand the things
(18:00):
come from a warehouse. So theythey'd call me. They called me out
and Fence and say, hey,can you bring me down this? Or
you can bring me down that.I'm like, well, listen, I've
got to get that up from thewarehouse. It's gonna take a day or
two. But yeah, they didn'tquite understand. Oh, Kendo was the
same way. Can you send downone of my gloves? And I'm like,
he jose, we don't have itat here, but I can get
(18:21):
it from the warehouse in another tayor two. Hey, how much has
that changed since then? I meanthey have, I'm sure they have.
They probably have cab equipment that cancrank that. Well. I don't know
they've they've since moved to Westport, and I tell you I'm gonna be there
next week with them at their salesmeeting. But they've opened up the Rawlings
experience. Oh yeah, it's amazing. Yeah, And kids can create their
(18:45):
their own custom gloves there with theirnames. Amazing. And you were a
glove maker, I was. Iwas the glove man on the I was
a driver and the gloveman on thecaravan. So you're a glove man first.
Yes, that was my first jobat Rawlings. So you just get
a piece of leather and start sewing. Well, I went down to their
factory in Ava, Missouri, andspent about a month down there Ava,
(19:07):
Missouri. That's down there by Springfield. It's probably about an hour from Springfield,
Missouri. But i'll tell you aquick story. I did set a
few trends in glove making. WhenKen Griffy Junior was a rookie, he
used a black trapeze glove. Atrapeze glove is a six finger glove and
that's got all the lacing. Well, he wanted me to relace his glove
(19:30):
in spring training his rookie year,So I to take all the black lacing
out and I put in brown lacing. In that particular year, the brown
lacing almost looked like a gold color. So I redid his glove and he
liked it because he thought it wasvery cool. So as we went from
spring training camp to spring training camp, all these young players said, hey,
(19:52):
can you put some of that goldlacing in my glove? Life like
you put in Griffy Juniors. Soat that point they started making gloves from
the factory that way, and theystill do. You know what's weird that
you're telling? The story makes meremember my getting a Rollings glove when I
was a kid, and it wasa six finger because I had like an
old stand musical, Well, WillieMays three finger. There was a three
(20:15):
finger glove that probably was a McGregor. Willie May's used a McGregor, okay,
but but then somebody brought out theRollings. I think it was made
for Stan Musio Stan Musa that wasmade us when I was a kid in
the fifties, you had to havethat. And I could still remember getting
that glove and what a big shotI thought I was. I remember the
(20:36):
first one I saw, Yeah, what is that? So Ozzie wore a
six finger glove. Yeah, andhis was his was a little bit smaller
because he's an infielder. And Ozziealways liked his glove very stiff, so
would relace his glove quite often, because when you release a glove, it
puts a lot of a lot ofstability back in the glove. And if
you remember how quick how Ozzi played, right, he does. He guided,
(21:00):
He guided the ball. He guidedthe ball to his hands. So
he needed a little bit of likea shovel exactly, just guide it to
the hand for the release. Didyou did you in your life have you
used much neatsfoot oil? No?A lot of the players would use that
would leave a little bit of residuewhere the where the dirt would stick to
(21:21):
the glove mcglove would be would becomereally heavy. But a lot of the
players would use shaving cream. Workwith a lot of right, yeah,
exactly, work with a lot ofgood guys. Yeah where Landlin is in
a lot of shaving cream, youknow, But work with guys like Tony
Gwynn, cal Ripken Jr. OzzyTerry Pendleton and just had a lot of
(21:44):
fun. Uh. Maguire's glove itripped one year and in spring training,
he asked me to sew it backtogether. I only had brown leather and
Mark used a black glove, soI end up sewing with brown leather.
And then from that point on hestarted ortering gloves from the factory with the
brown leather. So I kind oftake a little bit of credit of my
creativity. So for your life dealingwith supers, because baseball there were Baseball
(22:11):
players are never bigger than they werethen, I don't think rite the names
all that kind of So you're dealingwith megastars with mega attitudes and personalities.
How did that change your life?I mean I just treated them like normal
people. They did, and andyou know, as long as I you
(22:32):
know, would never ask for autograph, but uh, you know, there
were those that I respected, andthere were those that would be sending their
wives up to ask for free stuffand things like that. But uh,
you know, I treated them withrespect. They treated me with respect.
Because we had this big truck,a lot of the players viewed that as
a way to get away, toget up into the truck, to get
(22:55):
away from people bothering them. Sowe always had a couple extra chairs so
they could come up in the truckand hang out and sit and we'd have
him sign the ceiling of the truck. And I'll tell you what I have
to say. The classiest guy I'veever met in baseball. And I was
much younger and so was he,and we lost him far too soon.
Was Tony Gwyn just just a greatgentleman, a great human being. Absolutely.
(23:18):
One thing I remember about Tony Gwynwas he when he was playing here,
uh, playing the Padres in town, he hit a milestone three thousand,
and the Cardinal Nation rose up andgave him a standing ovation, and
he said he was glad he didn'tdo it the previous night. I think
maybe in Montreal. You know,I was like, hey, I'm really
glad he didn't, he wrote.I remember he wrote a letter to the
(23:41):
Post Dispatch, thank you. That'sthe kind of guy he was just.
Uh, he was just a classguy. We didn't like him. I
mean everybody liked that. Yeah, but you know, everyone had different personalities.
You know, you had players whenyou would go around and spring trainingum
and rawlins was usual. Was wasmanufacturing uniform. You'd go measure them in
spring training in your waist and you'dmeasure their waist there'd be certain players that
(24:06):
you know that actually were like maybea thirty eight waist and they wanted you
to sew a thirty four label init to kind of make them feel,
you know, like Trevor Chames thenumber James, the number of Levis.
There was a certain coach out westto uh who coached a team that has
(24:27):
a lot of blue out there.Yeah, and he wanted a smaller sized
label soon in his pants. Butyou saw all thoughts, all kinds of
things going on. So I tellyou I got a picture. I don't
know if it's in the book.I think it might be myself and Mark
McGuire or right next to our eachother in our truck. It's his rookie
(24:52):
year. I'm twenty seven years oldand he's thin and my upper body is
bigger than his. Wow, Ithink it's in the I think it might
be in the He came through SaintLouis with Team USA and they played the
ball went ballpark and I was thereand he was a big guy. But
yeah, you know he was tall. Then he had rookie well his brother
(25:15):
that played football in Hugo State. He became a professional bodybuilder, right,
Okay, Yeah, and he washe was, yeah, but you know
what, Jimmy talking about baseball gloves, and I played college baseball. When
you play that much baseball, youwear out of glove. You will wear
it out. And I have smallhands, and every once in a while
a big guy on Mike Jean wouldgrab my glove and say, hey,
(25:38):
Teddy, let me see your glove. And they stick their big fat hand
in there. Uh huh, andthen my glove. I'm like, hey,
cut that out right. My glovewon't get the same that's that's that's
not it. Actually, yeah, that's not it. But but I know
we're pitching rollins here, but yougot to go out and check that experience
out. It's it's amazing. MikeSon's twenty nine. I can't wait to
(25:59):
take them out there, all right, jim One quick final note, quick
final note, final note, becausewe're done, okay, go ahead,
Oh for me, Okay. Youknow, I wrote the book for four
reasons. Really. I wrote thebook because my story is so much bigger
than me. It's about my family, you know, losing my father,
losing my sister. I've lost anothersister. My sister's two kids are both
(26:22):
positive to the bad heart, Gene. I wrote the book in honor of
all that has been part of mylife the last thirty four to thirty five
years. I wrote the book hopingthat I can inspire some people to you
know, have a good attitude,to kind of take my examples and maybe
use that formula for their success. And then finally I wrote the book for
(26:44):
my kids, Jimmy, Annie andmy granddaughter Gia, to have a story
of what happened and what went on. It's awesome, ladies and gentlemen.
A member of the class that well, I actually did get a dinner.
Sure, for a year they didn'tget a dinner, but then they did
get a dinner from Saint Loue Hallof Fame. Jim, thanks a lot,
Jim great, Thank you so much. And that takes us to the
(27:06):
bottom of the hour, which meanswe're going to step away and show some
sauce. Yeah, I can't hearthe music. Who were playing that Muddy
Waters turn it out? Yeah,I can crank that a little bit.
Uh, it's I think this isa lie from the Cosmic Joy Scout Festival.
I like it. Muddy Water's gotmy Joe working. We'll be right
(27:26):
back with more mojo about the beautifulgame. This is s t O United
Soccer Sunday, coming to you livefrom KF and S five ninety the fan
so yeah, sorry, going toget me that showing them up? God
(28:03):
no, Jason, God no,this just woo not no bo just wor

gentlemen. Hey, I gotta saysome then. You know everybody's talking about
this country is divided. We're justdivided on every everything's split down the middle.
You know, you just can't do. You know what happened in the
House of Representatives yesterday. You hateto bring politics into this, but I'm
going to The Ukraine Bill passed threehundred and eleven to one hundred and twelve.
(34:25):
Yeah, that isn't much of adivision. That's seventy five twenty five.
Israel Aid passed three sixty six tofifty eight. That's not like a
fifty to fifty split. Come on, people, wake up. Ed Mundo
(34:47):
continues, Well, it's just goingto depend upon who you get your news
sources from. You know, peopleare I was watching c Span. No,
no, I'm not you. OhI was talking about those are what
happened. But you you can continueto We don't have broadcasting anymore. We
have narrow casting. I'm not thefirst to say that. Anyway, I
(35:07):
think we're going to talk. I'veheard. Oh you're as to change the
subject anything. Let's talk about somethingpleasant? Anyone, Ted? Can you
turn this off like quiet today?Yeah? Thanks? Anyone who's ever had
a Sarah in their lives? Ihave one. I have one, and
uh knows this song and my heartfeels has a It's a sweet song,
(35:30):
and it's brings up sweet memories andremind you of somebody specially. I love
these guys. Yeah, not allof it, right not? I mean,
well you love everybody, you know, I mean blue eyed Soul.
Yeah. These guys out of Phillymet in when they were young guys in
sixty seven. They were both inother bands, got together, realized they
(35:54):
like like what each other was doing, decided to start writing songs. This
song is written by Darryl Hall withhis then girlfriend formed them later wives Sarah
Allen, who was a flight attendant, and there's a song that precedes this
called Las Vegas Turnaround. It's notas well known, but it's the lead
(36:16):
song lead line as Sarah's off ona turnaround, which he's a flight attendant.
Y So, anyway, but thisis kid. It's a great I
can barely keep it together. Yeah, it's a sweet song and it's a
it's a about you know, it'sabout something. The the emotion really comes
through on it. And the reasonthey're included in the segment of underappreciated is
(36:37):
that they kind of got got lopedin with with yacht rock, which I
unabashedly enjoy anyway, Yeah, whatthe hell is that? Well, it's
kind of a rock that a genresubgenre music that came out sort of evolved
in the eighties, late seventies andthe eighties. It incorporated some softer stuff
like Fleetwood Mac some of their things, and some some smooth jazz which can
(37:01):
very quickly numb, Christopher Cross,Chriss Cross, Michael McDonald, and it
got disparaged by a lot of people. There was a YouTube show called yacht
Rock which made fun of this kindof music. These guys, you know,
yeah, smack them around. Wellthey would, But I've seen Hollo
(37:24):
notes live. Uh. Me andmonkey Man Marty happened to run at each
other over at Steve a few yearsago when we and Uh with our respective
spouses and they Daryl hall is,sorry, John, but Darryl hall Is
is the talent. And if you'venever seen Live from Darryl's House, look
(37:45):
it up. Do yourself a favoriteson YouTube. Yeah, yeah, it
is. It is entertaining. Andand you know when these renowned musicians and
artists embraced him that they respect theguy. The the one that that there's
two that I really come to mindfor me. One is the one he
(38:06):
does with Shelby Lynn, the kindof country artist. Uh, and that
song when they finish and the finishedplaying it together in his studio, all
those guys looking are looking at eachother. And if you've ever been involved
in anything that's with the arts, where you're working with a group of people
like this show, Yeah, atthe end of it, they just look
at each other like we got itright, that's it. That's a hit.
(38:28):
And the other one is when SmokeyRobinson comes in because Darryl reverts to
being sort of the oh yeah, yeah, it really reverse the fanboy.
So it's it's cool. Russell sevenYatesvilla three born with one. I like
Aston Villa. Well, I likeHall of Notes as I wrap up,
(38:50):
so you know they get your hollownotes and you like the crazy goalkeeping on
you take a listen. Uh No, I really don't particularly like him,
but I spent a little time inBirmingham. You know Amy which school there,
and I got to know some peoplethat were Aston Villa fans and that
always affects me. Uh and Birminghamis such a god awful place that you
(39:12):
know, at least you got thefootball right is that the second largest city
in England? It was just biggerthan Manchester Birmingham, Yes, yes,
the second city. And you gotWolves as well into the team there.
Yeah, well asked. I don'tknow. I just I had a really
good time watching an England game.It has a fabulous ground. Yeah I
didn't get to see that, JB. You can't have enough James Brown.
(39:39):
You know, James Brown had abig influence on Fela. Oh did I
tell you I got a new namefor number forty five? I don't think
you did. Well it's not aname, and no, no the president
ah former and hopefully not soon againto be OJT OJT. Yeah, I
(40:02):
was watching the O. J.Simpson Drive with alcoholics and I can just
see you old Fort doing that. You know he'd be taking a jet flyer
out. God. I just finisheda funny novel where he's OJT is featured
prominently and not named, called SqueezeMe by Karl Hyason, the Miami author
(40:27):
who just has writes very funny humorstuff. Anyway, And if that isn't
a great introduction for Ted segment,I don't know what is sure. What
you just see Ted? You wantto squeeze him? He's he's just so
nice. Give him a big oldhug. Folks you see Ted out on
the street, just walk up tohim, give him big hug. I
love it all right, And nowhere's Ted. Okay. I want to
(40:51):
lead up my segment today. Ialluded to it earlier. Had the pleasure
of attending the Greater Saint Louis AmateurBaseball Hall of Fame Induction Thursday night.
My friend and teammate Lonnie Macklin waspart of the induction ceremony. Annie was
(41:14):
a speedy center fielder. He wasdrafted by the Cardinals during the Whitey Ball
era. He was a whitey ballstyle player who said, Jack Rabbit,
hey take just take one second andexplain what whitey ball was or is,
or you know, just explain whywhite herzog. When he came from the
(41:35):
Royals, he asked Gussie Bush,Hey, you know you had need a
general manager. Why don't you letme do it. I want to build
a team for this ballpark. Andat the time, the dimensions at Bush
were for cavernous. It was almostfour to fifteenth. Center was three eighty
to the gaps, and they hadthis AstroTurf field, and He's like,
(41:58):
nobody's gonna hit home runs here,So let me build a team built on
defense, speed and putting the ballin play, which made it really exciting
to watch, so exciting, soexciting. So that's Whitey ball. So
my friend Lonnie was drafted into theCardinals during the white ball era. But
by the time he was poised makingthe big league, Tory had taken over
(42:22):
and he got a cup of coffee. I think he got fifteen or sixteen
at bats with the Cardinals, andLonnie is still active with the Cardinal alumni.
They do the kids clinics, etcetera. And Lonnie's a beloved character.
He still plays baseball to this day. And that man can hit.
He's a hitter, so it's greatto see him. But the other thing
(42:43):
that filled my heart that night wasthe presence of my UNLV Merrimack alumni.
Wow, Lannie's a Merrimac guy.He would have gone to UNLV if he
hadn't signed Joe Baver, who wasa ten year reliever in the big leagues
with the Cardinals and some other teams. Joe played at UNLV in the late
(43:04):
seventies. Joe's pitch was a palmball. Okay and Joe, okay,
wait one second, a palm ballfrom a pitcher because, believe it or
not, Ted a lot of peoplelisten to the show, don't. They
don't know as much about baseball asI do. Yeah, it's a it's
a version of a change up.But you put it literally in your back,
(43:27):
you bury it in your palms. The friction coming out of your hand
reduces the velocity and that's your it'syour off speed pitch. But the motion
makes the batter think that it's goingto be a fast, he sells it
the exact armslought, et cetera. So Joe spoke glowingly about my coach,
and you know at UNV Fred Dallamore, about the influence that Fred had on
(43:49):
him. If Fred had a goodpitcher, he wrote him and he pitched
a lot of innings there and itmade him earn the reputation of always available.
Coventry City nil Manchester United three inthe FA Cups. Wow, in
the fifty ninth minute, you're notgoing to give us any more west Ham
scores? Are you? I'll tellyou when this final don't just don't bother,
(44:15):
just just as as an act offriendship. So as Joe moved around
the big leagues in the I don'tthink he was like the the ninth inning
guy, but he was a seventheighth guy. He moved around. He
really had the reputation that he wasan everyday guy. You know, he
never said no, I can't takethe ball today. So he spoke loingly
(44:37):
about my coach. He spoke lollinglyabout Rick Lesman. Rick is in poor
health right now. He's a legendarycoach from Merrimack. Merrimack twenty seven.
So if you say Rick Lesmond likehundreds of Saint Louis guy's place. His
name came up from Lonnie, fromJoe Babor, from a guy I'm I
(44:57):
mentioned ex Plant Sherman and several othersin their induction speeches. Rick has an
issue with diabetes. He's got neureopaty issues right now. And Rick was
the wasn't the first, but hewas the guy that made baseball clinics,
that taught kids pitching and hitting. He made it a business. And I
(45:22):
remember at first time I met him, I was twelve years old. He
had a hitting and pitching clinic downin Manchester, Missouri, and we would
go there on Sunday night during thewintertime, and we would all have our
five dollar bill in hand. We'dhand Rick our five dollar bill and the
team would get an hour in thecages. Wow. So and I ended
up running a camp like that forhim in the summer of eighty six and
(45:45):
eighty seven on the Merrimack campus, teaching kids hitting and pitching. So the
guy, he's I have a greatfather, but he's like a second father
to me. A great guy.So the other gentleman I want to mention
is a gentleman who's probably four yearsyounger than me. His name is Lance
Sherman. Lance is a tall lefthander. Talk about a handsome guy.
(46:09):
I walked into that room at thereception before the event. He just sticks
like a zort thumb. He wasdressed nice and he ted everyone. Every
gal crazy about a sharp dressed manexactly. So Lance talked about thriving under
fred Dallamore at UNLV. So Isent coach a d a text and he
(46:34):
calls me on the phone Friday morningand we have a long conversation and he
just appreciated knowing that these guys, and he has a real fondness for the
Saint Louis guys. You need tounderstand the UNLV coach. Yeah, he
would take guys in some cases sightunseen based on Rick's recommendation, okay,
(46:57):
which is that that's the way baseballused to work, right. And the
other guy, forgot to mention whois Lance's best friend? Is TJ.
Matthews, who pitched for the Cardinals. He's a Columbia, Illinois native.
And Lance just told a funny storyabout remember getting the Merrimack and I meet
this guy from Columbia, Illinois, and he had it is Columbia Illinois Eagles
(47:19):
jacket on and he's like nobody ColumbiaIllinois, he knows how to play baseball.
Well, they became thicks, thieves. They transferred to Vegas together and
then you know they were in theminor leagues at the same time. TJ
made it lance. His career endedat Trip Away with the Rangers. But
it was just great vibes. SoTed, let me ask us, how
(47:42):
many guys do you think from SaintLouis ended up playing at UNLV Almost forty?
Wow? Yeah, I went withthree others. I was wow,
my group was four. So that'sa pipeline. It's a total pipeline.
And I'm telling you it afforded methe opportunity to play baseball at a level
(48:02):
that I dreamed about. That wasthe era I played high school ball.
In the era when the College WorldSeries in Omaha burst onto ESPN. I
got to play against Robin Ventura's OklahomaState. So you played in the College
World No, but those teams wouldcome to Vegas in February. Yeah,
(48:22):
so we played all the big programs, which at ass State had great teams
that great weather out there. Yeah, but I mean Robin Ventura his senior
year, he left Vegas hitting aboutone hundred well, and that was a
good place to hit. But hewas not happy when he left Vegas.
Maybe he was out at night.Sometimes sometimes sometimes that was your secret web.
(48:47):
Sometimes the visiting teams wouldn't be ableto behave themselves when they came in,
you know, and you know wewould take advantage ted Back in the
day when I was I was involvedin mac Alotta Monday in a bass ball
we did the same thing, saidthe new guys. Anyway, so so
soccer, A lot of people knowme as soccer guy now, but I'm
(49:09):
a baseball guy. And I sawwe had seven of my Merrimack teammates at
our table. But another really quickstory. There was a gentleman and his
wife who were assigned to our tablebecause we had two seats. He was
inducted into the Hall of Fame intwo thousand and two. Is an umpire.
(49:30):
I asked him if he had umpirewith a man named Ken Braden,
and he said his wife goes,oh, yeah he did, and I
and Ken's wife were really good friends. He said, well, have you
met his son Tim? And theygo no, But he looks just like
Ken, and he does. He'sa mountain of a man. My friend
(49:52):
Tim played at slew after Merrimack.I went and grabbed Tim. I said,
hey, this gentleman said he umpirewith your dad. And when Tim
walked over, that woman looked atTim and said, oh my god,
he looks just like his dad,and they needed to have a ten or
fifteen minute chat. It left withTim smiling, gave me the thumbs up
(50:14):
and assured this woman that he wasgoing to mention to his mother who's still
living, that he met them.It was. It made my night.
Oh yeah, make those connections likethat, see, you know, bring
people that together that have been specialto you. Yeah. Yeah cool.
So anyway, quickly at women's soccer, there are two more games on today
(50:36):
the coverage on Friday night on Amazon, on Saturday night on Ion doubleheader,
and then Today's Action. Well actuallyhad a nationally televised game yesterday at noon.
Today's Action will there will be onNWS oh plus, and I think
maybe the night game is on CBATSports Network, so guys check it out.
(50:57):
There's an influx of international talent. There are some African players that have
joined the league. This year thatare leading the league in goals, and
I talked about them during the WorldCup. They are dynamic, dynamic players
that have a high technical quality anda flare and the league needs that,
(51:19):
they need it. And Kansas Citywon again yesterday and scored five goals to
Kansas Kansas. They play in Missouri. Actually Brazil Brazilian is is? Is
it bea? I think that's whatwe're seeing the benefit of more investment in
the league. We're getting some yestracks, well, yes, exactly.
(51:42):
Oh wait a minute, wait aminute, right for the league, real
quick, Caitlin Clark is going tomake seventy five thousand dollars a year on
her contract. Did you see that? Everybody saw that. Yeah, it's
just it's a It was I thinka real big hell moment for the rest
of the country that doesn't follow lessless than the mascot for most NBA teams
(52:05):
and the and the average rookie inthe NBA is going to be ten million.
I'm assuming she's going to make alittle unsponsorship. Oh, she's going
to make a ton of spot. But again, I'm gonna I've been saying
this, I'm saying it that sheand hopefully that that African American kid will
will about a magic Bird moment andit will lift the w NBA the way
(52:30):
those guys lifted. And here's whatI've learned from these Facebook videos that I
get all the time about great NBAplayers. Let's face most of them African
American talking about Larry Bird. They'restill talking about Larry Bird, right,
this is what thirty years later, and that's the kind of that's what you
(52:52):
need. I think that's going toput the butts in the seats. So
the Magic Bird game was forty fiveyears ago. Forty five years go oh,
okay, didn't really have to saythat. Well, but I mean
but but but the point being thatthat's where the league, the NBA was
forty five years ago. I hadan interview with the m of the Dallas
(53:15):
of the NBA franchise on Thursday Friday. She said, Caitlin is going to
bring people to our games and allwe need is free to come to one.
You'll be hooked. Well. Andthere's just you know, with the
Olympics coming up, there's just goingto be a big, a nice carry
over into all women's sports. Andit's not like it's a net sum game.
Everybody's got enough bandwidth to to uh, you know, watch watch good
(53:38):
sports regardless of the gender of peoplewho are playing. It's the it's the
it's the personalities. It's the personalitiesand both those guys. I mean,
I don't know how much of apersonality Caitlyn has, but man, she's
she's a player. We watched, yeah, we watched the end of the
(53:59):
of the title game for the SheBelieves Cup. That's just as exciting as
any sporting event you're gonna see.Hey, it was fabulous, great And
if you're you know, if youlike, if you were like some of
us who at the end of soccermatches and you go, what, I've
been here for one hundred minutes nowand it's tied and happened in the women's
game, Say you wanted about kthey if you haven't too often, they
(54:22):
lose a little bit of luster. But when an event like that, yeah,
erectly the pks and you have agoalkeeper you can stop them and take
them. One's fun. Man.Well, just like the men's Champions League,
you know, uh, going towhat we gotta go plug the book
to those matches. Yeah, thosematches we're exciting this week. Oh so,
