jumping Maxine one in town? Yes, come on, you wanna got one

(00:37):
on? Yeah, I'm going togo. It doesn't matter, will you?
Oh man? Let him play?Call me Smokey Robinson really ding.
That's a good song. William isthis first? Yeah, Williams is this?

(00:59):
William is his first name? Hey, great great song. Welcome back
to the second r SEO Soccer Sundayed Mundo here along with your host Tom
Schwarz. Ted call him Tex Williamsover there running the board. Jim Bleeker
can't believe it, but he's herein studio. We're just tickled to death
to have him. I've been rollingaround the floor laughing. We're right here
on KFN S five nine of theFan and the Harry Keyos Studio. No

(01:23):
exaggeration again thanks to Mark Nemart mGK Law Firm, local firm nation wide
results here. Who is suspended fromlistening to the show is the sledge fighter.
Tom Schwarz, you want to explainthe sledge you were fighting? Uh?
The sledge I was fighting. Icleaned out the pond for the first
so it was actually new York Metsstuff. It was Pond's. It was

(01:45):
ponds. It was stuff at theold Met. Pond's gun fall into the
bottom. Yeah, it's just whycan't we get this water not'd be green?
Oh? Well, you pump aboutseven million gallons into it and flush
it out, then pump it out. I had pumps going and hoses.
Oh man, it was it wasmister hydraulics. Well, I don't know
about that. And it's a scoreinterruption. Uh in the classical in the

(02:14):
Darby in the SDL United FC soccerSunday Darby, the score is Matt Baker
one Daniel Esteve. Now that thatis would you? I was going to

(02:35):
say that's surprising, but then whenI think about it, it really is
it. Well, I just youknow, I really dislike Arsenal. I
mean because of what's his name?Although I've got mitigating mitigating situation, I've
really come to like Lee Dixon alot as a as a broadcaster, and

(02:57):
the guy at City who City Sceneas a big fan. I can't remember
his name right now, he's abig Arsenal fan. Does an Arsenal blog.
Pete Wood uh it does an Arsenalblock. So I feel I feel
happy for him, but I hatestaying kronkey so much that I means just

(03:19):
I don't know anyway, Jim Leekeris with us. Jim who happens to
be the president of the Saint LouisSoccer Hall of Fame, and for some
reason he's decided to be friends withus and continues to honor our invitations to
join us. Ted, what doyou think is wrong with Jim? You

(03:44):
know what he's He's a likable sortand uh, you know what. We
we treat him with the respect hedeserves. We do we do? Jim?
Do we treat you with the respectyou deserve? Yes? Wow?
I mean if I would say no, I would be invited back. I
want to ask you a question.Your granddaughter who was playing soccer at Bond,

(04:09):
does she have eligibility left? Jim? She does have eligibility, you
know, God love her. Shehas been gobbled up by the by the
portal. Yet well, oddly enough, she surprised everybody she completed her three
She completed her four years of collegein three years, except for one class

(04:31):
because she wanted to play her senioryear and then go on to graduate school.
Well, she became a casualty ofthe Loyola closing. So she's yeah,
fought by closing. So she isgraduating before her brother and before her
cousin who were graduating at Rockhurst andMissouri School of Mines in two weeks.

(04:59):
So she's a great graduating before heryou know, a year before she had
to. That is unbelievably awesome though, Yeah, and more people ought to
do that. And she she hasbeen in conversations and very good conversations with
Washington You she wants to go tograduate school. And when the coach found
out and I talked to I talkedto Katie yes day before you was the

(05:24):
coach at wash It Jim Conlin, jib conlan Conlin. He just got a
great program and you know it's thereperennial, you know, you know,
final four. Yes, and weshould talk to him and individual who you
uh a degree in three years shouldbe wash you yeah, right, yeah,

(05:47):
right. So they have to fight, they have to fight the right
spot. And because this happened soso late in the application process, you
know, they have to make aspecial commitment to have Katie become a part
of their graduate program. So wegot our figures crossed. It She hasn't

(06:13):
been officially placed as a member ofthe team, but we certain what does
what does that say about an individualwho is an athlete in college and at
the same time finishes in three years. That's the kind of person you want
on your team, on your workforce, in your life. I always took

(06:36):
a minimum in the spring and itextended my degree seeking BIA semester. You
know what that that just illustrates thatsomebody has got a great ability to manage
their time, which is not thecase percent of the resident people in college.

(06:58):
She's in bed by seven thirty.Well, you know, but she's
up early. She was part ofthe you know, we always said if
Boble was going to be around, she was going to be the owner.
She was going to be the presidentone day. Well, he loved her
so much. Here's here's the thingyou think about it these days, I
mean, just in an average Idon't know what missoo is in tuition wise,

(07:20):
but you look at the costs ofcollege, they just continue to go
up and up. It's it's absurd, right, And at the same time,
when the chances of getting a goodjob seemed to decline, that you
could repay the money with and you'retalking for some people thirty forty thousand dollars
fifty thousand dollars a year. Soright off the bat, if you go

(07:45):
three instead of four, you justsaved yourself fifty thousand dollars for whatever that
number is, you know, Imean, sheez it's I think. I
think this whole student loan thing isa crime. I think the universe and
the banks have conspired just like,oh yeah, I would just keep you
know, we'll get these loans out, and the universities just keep raising the

(08:09):
tuitions. Raising the tuitions started withthe banks, and they made it such
a sweet deal and they're talking toeighteen year olds. They sold it on
getting more people and getting more peopleenrolled is good biz, right. The
first thing I did every every threefreshman year of my three kids, I

(08:33):
asked the question, how do Idecline student aid? Huh? Otherwise they
will shove it into your bank account. They will shove it in. I
asked, what form do I haveto fill out to decline it? I
am I'm going to make an admissionright now. I'm probably past what's this?

(08:56):
We're called MGK. Let's see ifwe can say I mean and I
was thinking about the station. It'sstatue of limitations. Yeah, because when
I think tuition at Umsel is fivehundred dollars a year, I really do.
In nineteen sixty nine seventy, youknow, and I took student loans
and I used it. I boughta house, you know, I mean

(09:18):
it was the greatest house. Wewent in with friends. But uh,
you know, come on, man, now, I mean, I look,
how do you how do you ingood faith have a kid in,
an eighteen year old kid in,and say oh, yeah this, We're
going to lend you thirty grand It'sno big deal. You're you know,

(09:39):
how do you do you sleep atnight? I don't. I couldn't do
it. Let's change it. Soluck to your granddaughter. Yeah, she
sounds like an awesome human. Yeah, and I surprised her. They had
your final game friendly against a teamof Loufuse girls, and these lou Fugue
girls were very talented, and theytook it to the font Pond girls.

(10:03):
And it was made up of theplayers that would have been playing this year,
and then some who returned to bea part of the last game.
And uh, with about five minutesto go, the the girl from Blue
Fuse scored and I looked at GeorgeGangster, who's who's a Hall of Famer

(10:24):
whose daughter was playing against Katie, and I said, watch this. I
ran out on the field like amessy and I took I took a selfie
with Katie and she says, what, grandpa, what are you doing out
on the field. I ran out, I ran out and I said here,
come on, and she the entireeverybody was in awe. You know,

(10:48):
their their jaws dropped. My wifesays, what are you doing?
You're going to get her kicked offthat. Oh, she's not gonna you
know, You're not going to beanything. You're going to get back all
them. Oh wait a minute.I apologize to the coaches. They said
that was the greatest thing that I'veever seen in Did you ever Green Jack?
And I no, no, oh. I was worried by font pond

(11:09):
shut okay that the Saint Louis SoccerFame emblem on it, but yeah,
yeah, but yeah, cool Jim, yeah cool. Yeah. See that's
why they're thinking about not letting himback in the press box because he just
run down. That's why they won'tlet him on the field because he just
like, Hey, Indy, niceplay run out there, take a selfie.

(11:30):
Come on, Jim, you can't. I know better than that.
I know that my wife says youbetter not do that at graduation. I'm
not going to do it. Justdon't tell me what the joy was A
cool spontaneous moment. Yeah, so, Jim, what else do you want
to talk about in the last thirtyseconds of this last thirty seconds well of
this segment, I just have tooh, somewhere along lines, I'd really

(11:54):
like to talk about the Hall ofFame banquet in its entirety. Okay,
well, I think, and we'llget to it. I'm sure we get
to it. Well, I thinkDaniel might have been raised from the dead.
Uh so we'll let him. We'llsee what he's got to say.
And then when is the Hall ofFame again? Maybe the eighteenth eighteen Union

(12:18):
Station? Union Station? How manypeople? Uh, well, we're hoping
on at least eight hundred, eighthundred nice yeah, Emerson like and Palmer
taking us out with my favorite EmersonTom. I'm right there with this.
It's an uncharacteristic song for people whoare not familiar with this group. It's

(12:39):
a yeah, yeah, it's Alot of their stuff was this big orchestral
big yeah, yeah, But thisis just a tight jazz song. Man.
It is nice, very tasty, and it's got a nice little at
the end. It has a greatsynthesizer play on it too. We are
Sto United Soccer Sunday, coming toyou live from KFN S five ninety the

(13:01):
fan right here in Saint Louis,Missouri, the Harry Kio Studios, and
I believe we have given me I'mtaking over right here. Here we go,
ladies and gentlemen, from what isit Fox two and eleven? Where
else does he work? Oh,he's got that Wembley Wembley's Game podcast.

(13:24):
A man rising media star in ourtown and in the country, in the
world. Perhaps your friend and minefrom South Texas to Saint Louis, from
Emerson Lake and Palmer, those threeguys together and they were going to add
a Steve A two. It couldbe from Ted that lpe lp. There

(13:46):
we go, ladies and gentlemen.Daniel Steve certainly the most interesting and lengthy
introduction I've heard, but a goodone nonetheless comes from the heart. Buddy,

(14:07):
Hey, dude, you're not nearlyas depressed as I thought you'd be.
Yeah, because I saw some heart, Tom, I saw some heart,
And that's all I was waiting for, was just a little heart,
because when the system is so obviouslyrigged against you and you're just looking for
anything to smile about, to findit in and always the coon. And

(14:31):
I saw some heart out there atthe end of the game. So for
people who are not aware of this, Daniel is referring to today's earlier victory
of the Arsenal over his beloved Spurs. Then the game was three nil to
the Arsenal at halftime, and Danieltexted us basically that he was getting ready

(14:56):
to jump off the bridge. Didanna keep you from doing that or what?
No? And I was getting coffeewith her sister. They left me.
They left me alone once we wentdown to zero. But it wasn't
just that we were down three now. It was that we had two posts,
we had one goal called off,we had one should be penalty that

(15:18):
wasn't even sniffed, and then wehad an own goal. I mean,
just absurd. The irregularities that Isaw in that first half, and they
continued in the second. The onlydifference was, you know, we just
we just stuck with it, Wekept at it. We had a couple
of mischances. Son had a mischanceand Kolossky had a miss chance. And

(15:41):
I really like to see Brendon Johnsonout there. I'm not sure what happened
to Timo Werner, but Brennan wasgreat. There were things I liked.
But yeah, it's just the onlydownside is it's still three points to the
to the scum. But fortunately ManCity, Man City is still uh,
it's still in the driver's seat, which is all that matters. Is that

(16:03):
politically correct to say that word asa radio, as a as a television
He was, he was talking aboutArsenal, So it's the truth, is
its historical fact. They sing asong called North London Forever. They haven't
even been in North London forever.Literally, I mean they began in the

(16:30):
in the in the weapons factories inSouth London and then moved to North London.
So their their biggest song is actuallyincorrect. I think that's scummore that
in my opinion. I have aquestion. I have a question of Daniel
and yesterday, no, no,no, were you watching the Liverpool game

(16:51):
yesterday? I watched a portion ofit. Did you see the near the
end of the game where the goalietook the ball down and he walked out
a few steps, spun in theball about fifteen feet in front of him.
Ref blew the whistle right or wavedit one they I think he waved

(17:11):
him on to say, come on, let play the game. He didn't
blow a whistle. Yeah and no, no, it was It was yeah,
and you know the player from Liverpoolis going to go up and hammer
the ball into the net, andall of a sudden he said, no,
it's going to be a foul.I could not figure that out.
I haven't seen the whole replay, but I was still trying to try to

(17:36):
grasp what happened. It's bizarre andthe only thing I can connect it to,
ironically, is actually an Arsenal incidentthat happened a few weeks back where
David Rye put the ball down ona goal kick, kicked it to Gabrielle,
and Gabrielle picked it up with hishand, put it back down and
kicked it back to Rya and everybodywas like, that's a handball in the

(17:56):
box, Like that is a handballin the bar, And I guess the
whole argument on arsenal side was ifthere's there's like a common sense role essentially,
and the common sense would tell theref that that wasn't an issue,
that they knew they were just resettingthe ball. But that's ridiculous. I

(18:17):
wish you could see the law. That's a handball in the box. And
I have to I have to imaginethat the one with Liverpool was actually even
worse because it looked like Ariola wentdown with injury afterward. But that was
what, yeah, seconds after theplay it stopped. Yeah, I think
he realized that he had made abig mistake and then he went down and
then that's what stopped the play.If you could see a lot, if

(18:37):
you could see the look on Jim'sface, Daniel, it is it is
he's mystified. Well you mystified, you said. The effect I have on
you guys on the radio pros theyes the old goal to the the first
old goal, uh that Hopster gavegave the arsenal. You know that's the
ball that's driven and you know theplayer was bumped a little bit. That

(19:02):
all it takes if he's trying toclear that ball and a little bumped and
boy before you notice in your owngoal. I mean that was that was
devastating because they were playing great upuntil that time. Yeah, there have
been some interesting decisions, you know. It's funny the todten theam got a
penalty today against Arsenal. Should havehad two, but it was the first
penalty we've had all year, andI wow, I find that incredible,

(19:27):
especially given the fact that we're toptwo in the league in box touches,
touches in the opponent's box. Howit's possible that that's our first penalty is
beside me. And it's ironic too, because everybody was like, who's going
to be the penalty case taker afterHarry Kane's gone. It doesn't matter because
we weren't taking penalties. But eveneven more so, to see young and

(19:51):
son just put together a beautiful penaltykick in a clutch moment, I think.
I think at least for the homefans, we can we can have
something to smile about it. Inthat instance, Well, you you've got
songs, so you can smile.I mean, he's to me, he's
a guy everybody would want to beon their team. He's a guy you

(20:11):
want your daughter home to bring homeand say, hey, you know,
I'm marrying this guy. He justseems like such a cool guy, right,
yeah, And that's where my biascomes into play one thousand percent.
But I just feel like Tottenham doesn'thave doesn't have a guy you don't necessarily
love. I think Christian Romero isprobably the one that gets under most people's

(20:33):
skin, but that's very much intentional, like that is his his shick.
Right, You've got the Brazilian, you got the blonde Brazilian what's his name?
Yeah, but Richarlison doesn't really Heintentionally tried to get under Liverpool skin
a ton when he was at Everton. But outside of outside, like off
the pitch, he's never had anyissues. People love his his open and
willingness to talk about mental health.Uh so it just seems and then everyone

(20:56):
loves antipasticaglu. Everyone's been us abouthim and his demeanor off the pitch.
And then you look at Arsenal andall those guys are jackass juror excuse me,
Joe, sorry, all those guysare rough. All those guys whatsoever.
That's expert opinion. Yeah, that'sthat's what I like about you.

(21:17):
You never bring personal opinion in it'salways of course, that's right, that's
right. So what are Spurs playingfor? I mean, there are they
in the choir are the seven pointsback of aston Villa, but we have
two games in hand, so drawwould have been big because we would we
could have gone level with them hadwe won our next two. But it's
going to come down to if astonVilla can survive their gauntlet because we've got

(21:42):
a really tough schedule ahead, includingman City and at this point it's it's
odd for a Tottenham fan, butwe we want to lose the Man's City
game objectively, so we kind oftake that as a wash because the only
thing worse than not getting top fourwould the Arsenal winning the league. All
right, okay, all right, see I just don't get that stuff.

(22:02):
I'm not I'm not nearly enough ofa fan to uh to take it to
that level. I appreciate it,and it's just it's just not I think.
I think for our team development inEuropa League would not be a bad
place to see. We pretty muchgot that locked up. So with my
comfort in that scenario, I Ijust can't I can't see Arsenal. I

(22:26):
can't see Arsenal winning the league, and this goes to just the way they
played today. It drove me crazy. I mean, they had everyone is
heralding them for having three shots orfour shots, three on target. They
were two headers and then a breakawaySokka goal. They were essentially playing a
low block encounter. The only creditI'll give Arsenal today specifically was their ability

(22:48):
to break the press is pretty darnimpressive. They are very clean at breaking
down oppress and Tottenham's not the bestpressing scene, but we have a pretty
good shape and they they they knifethrough us pretty good. But other than
that, they were running a fourto four to two low block the entire
half when we had seventy three percentpossession. And and when you've got Lee
Dixon, a former Arsenal player, talking about how this game feels like it's

(23:11):
zero zero, it feels like it'stied when it's three zero, and how
Tottenham haven't been given the love thatArsenal have been given. When a former
Arsenal player is saying that on anationally broadcasted game, you know there's something
going on, because that's crazy.I would feel the same way if it
was a Tonham fan showing love toArsenal. I mean that is as clear
cut as a gift that some wasoff. I used to really dislike Lee

(23:34):
Dixon when he was a player becausein those days I was a Manchester United
fan. I didn't know, Ididn't know any better. That's unfortunate thing
to say, press, but unfortunate. Yeah, But as a broadcaster he
is excellent in my opinion, LeeDickson. And I also then found out

(23:57):
he played at Stoke City, sothere you go. Well, I'm not
giving them any points, but Iwill say that today he was particularly unbiased,
which is away from his usual hisusual demeanor. So it was it
was just a frustrating seventy minutes andI was pretty, uh, pretty pumped

(24:18):
about how he Do you think Dixon? You inested? Do you think Lee
Dixon is biased toward Arsenal? Allof all of the former players are the
men? You ones are way worse. I'll tell I'll say that man,
you the former men you players areby far and away the worst. But
it also coming from a Spurs perspective. The problem that I have, especially
with the comparison to being a DallasCowboys fan. Right, everybody talks about

(24:41):
the cowboys like everybody there. Youknow, I'll say America's team. But
but truly, from a ratings perspective, they pull the highest ratings. ESPN
constantly talks about him because they drawthe most attention and that invites the most
hate, the most trash talk, considering they don't live up to the hype,
right, Tottenham from a succes perspectivedoesn't live up tonight. But we

(25:02):
haven't won anything, right. Butthe thing that bothers me is from the
rest of the top six or themedia in football, there's just a sense
of irrelevance, Like Tottenham is irrelevant. They are just this fun little thing
on the side that is not worthdiscussing. So that's why you hear is
that because they haven't won, Yeah, but it's also just historic, you

(25:26):
know, going back to the sixtiesand eighties. Yeah, maybe you had
some really great Glenn Hoddle led teamsthat were European champions, but gone are
those days. In the Premier Leagueera, Tottenham hasn't done anything, and
so people just find them as thissix of six of top sixteens and it's
unbearably frustrating because on that same veinyou'll have some of these pundits talk about

(25:52):
how impressive Brighton is tactically, orhow impressive X team is coming up.
You know, you'll even hear abouthow Lowton will send it and how Crystal
Palace is kind of up and down. Like you'll hear discourse about these teams,
but then when it comes to Tottenham, it's it's just irrelevant. It's
like, oh, there's to themagain. They're just gonna be Spursy and
whatever. You know, Daniel,I never thought of a thought of it

(26:15):
that way, but you're right.I mean, they knew that that was
always going to be on the top, be one of the top teams.
But they've never won. But they'vealways been there and always gives them said
consistency. But you know, Arsenalcan drop out of the top seven for
two consecutive seasons and tot them canfinish second and Arsenal still get bought at.

(26:38):
He that this as this great, great lub. Yeah, that's been
so dominant for years. It's crazy. Ants an Spurs owner is not a
scumbag. I'd rather be hated thanirrelevant. But it's that way from a
fan perspective, maybe in my careerperspective. I'd rather be irrelevant, be

(26:59):
careful what you wish for. Hey, Daniel, I got I got three
worried for you. Happy birthday,Anna? Whoa happy birthdaynath Oh she is.
She has got the patience of aSaint Daniel. As we wrap up
this third half hour segment of it, she wasn't nearly as depressed as I

(27:22):
think. Oh well, he's gothis girlfriend there. She's well helping into
this mood. If you were hangingout with Anna, you wouldn't be depressed.
If I look like Daniel, I'dbe counting my lucky stars. Anyway
we are. This is Sto UnitedSoccer Sunday coming to you live from the
Harry Koste. You look like Daniel. Maybe Hanna would be looking at you.
That's exactly right from uh CAF andS five nine of the Fan right

(27:42):
here at Saint Louis KFN S fivenion of the Fans say it once again,
Rolling Stones one of their best recordsever. Sticky Finger love this song,
back at it. Here we come. We're going to talk to next.
But the man to my left,I believe the GM leaker right.
No me. The other time Igot too many commercials. You got too

(28:06):
many times. Oh we gotta breakface and built be right back. Don't
got anywhere, think us out there. You don't know me, but you

(28:48):
bro almost based blooming. You don'tweller soon? Hey, welcome back,

(29:30):
everybody. I Steel United Soccer Sundaycan be due Alive from the Harry Kio
Studios Here at k f A Sfive night, A fan of Saint Louis
Michael McDonald bringing us back in.Is this a song about the college campus
protests? I don't think so.Taking it to the right North County.
Yes, we're going to talk abouthim for just a minute as part of

(29:52):
the Underappreciated People in Music. Hewhen is my segment on that you're the
host? Sit right right before Iget into the Saint Louis Soccer Hall of
Fame, right before after you getyour dinner. Anyway, he was.
I remember watching The Letterman Show onetime when they were going David Dennis monologue
and he was introducing Paul Schaeffer andhe said that Paul, I see you

(30:17):
got somebody else sitting in with youtonight. Paul and Paul says day were
glad to have the great Michael McDonald'ssitting in with us. There's a big
applause in the audience and Letterman sitsdown and you know, as a applause
dies down, he said, Paul, if I had that guy's voice,
the world could kiss my bleep.I mean, the guy's voice is one

(30:37):
of the most distinctive, richest.Steely Dan asked him to sing background vocals,
and those guys we've talked about before, how those two guys Beckera and
Fagan were perfectionists, wouldn't take anythingbut what they wanted, and he was
a background. He's all the backgroundvocals as him and it. He talks

(30:57):
about how difficult that was to justget those notes because they're very close together.
Yeah, they were going to letanything new he is. He's a
local guy. He's from North Countyand he grew up playing Dixie Land with
his dad and went to just it'sone of those situations where his career just

(31:18):
took off because of some people heknew when he was getting by playing sessions
a little bit and in Los Angelesand Steely Dan was looking for somebody to
come in and the Doobies actually thenthey moved to them. And I know
a lot of people didn't like thatchange. But the Doobie Brothers themselves were
ready to make a change because alot of their songs were beginning to,

(31:38):
you know, create the same song. Critic for Rolling Stones reviewed one of
their albums and said, Dooby Dooby Doobey again into Boby Dooby Doo took
it on down the street. SoMichael McDonald, the voice of the eighties,
you know, still a good guywhen you put this down as your
pick for this week, and I'mlike, you know, I'm not really
crazy about that, but listening toit, you know, the great thing

(32:00):
about this is we get to listento stuff on headphones on and you just
hear, you just hear things thatyou don't ordinarily hear. He was doing
some work in a studio when whenChristopher Cross was recording his Name Sank album,
and the producer went down and said, hey, you might come down
and sing behind this kid. Andhe sings just you know, one line

(32:22):
two or three times in the song, and it just adds that certain it's
a certain little instrumental fill that youwould play, just treating the voice like
an instrument, and it just, you know, i mean, propelled the
song to a multi platinum selling record. You know, I got a question.
This begs a question the Doobie Brothers. Was it for Doobies? Okay,

(32:44):
nice, no question at all aboutthat one? Over the line?
Eything specific you want to, Ohwe got to talk about hall f Come
on, hey, wait a minute. This is my segment. This is
my segment tech. This is whereI get to talk about all the things
that I think are really important.Tom. Sorry, ladies and gentlemen,
Jim Leaker, I'm back. I'mback anything. No, no, mister,

(33:10):
don't I have a question for you. Well, let me let me
get through with this and then I'llbe bored happy. Yeah. The banquet
is uh May the eighteenth at UnionStation. Have a great lineup of the
inductees. Mike Bono, Bill Fann, Mark Frederickson, God love him.
We lost him a couple of yearsago, but Kathy is going to be

(33:31):
accepting in his honor. Tom Hayes, Chris Klein, Denny Lee, Joe
Reneger, Michelle McCarthy, Restovik andand John Stall. You know, great
lineup of the inductees that are alltruly honorable. Uh truely Saint Louis Soccer

(33:52):
Hall of Fame No, we hadJim Tegens on last week. Oh what
a great guy, what an incrediblestory. Yeah gotten good lord. I
mean the guy has more transplants. And then most people have fillings, you
know. Yeah, yeah, andthen and then we've got the bound Senior
Jimmy Johnson Award is going to begoing to Joe Clark. Who's John Clark

(34:15):
who announced his retirement from from WashingtonNews Men's team. You know, here's
here's a gentleman who who's played thegame, coached the game with Saint Louis
Hue and and then ends up hiscareer at Washington You forty one years of
coaching and the Bobby Kiell Future Stars. Two great individuals. Who is Bobby

(34:37):
ko Bobby Ko was one of wasone of the greatest athletes, right,
greatest athletes. He he had,he was played, he played professional baseball,
professional soccer. He was in thestudio over on Hampton one time.
I cannot find that audio. Oh, I'll find it, but I can't
find it right now. Yeah.Yeah, and he had a store.

(35:00):
Sorry for everything, he made astory for everything. He's a funny guy
entertaining. Yeah, now, Iremember, I just wanted you to explain
for people who might not know becausethey hear Bobby, they maybe think no
relation, no reation, no relationto Harry. But Bobby was is probably
the only player that played on thenational team, captain the national team,

(35:22):
and coached the national team. Wow. You know, so you know,
his experience on the field and offthe field from the sidelines is impeccable.
Type of individual player coach. Thatwas part of that fabric of Saint Louis
being the mecca, right, right, most definitely, most definitely. So

(35:45):
the future stars are Emily d'arouki fromLafayette High School right goalscorer, and Grant
Locker from Saint Louis Shoe High.Grant's dad is one of the co owners
of the Saint Louis Ambush. Notwhy we chose him, but uh,
you know it added to the addedto the fuel. I mean it was

(36:07):
just what with all the Lockers, even their brothers. I you know,
his one brother plays with my grandson. The other one is is in the
UH City's Academy team. I meanthey're they're they're all great players. Well,
what Saint Louis Soccer Hall of Fameis part of the fabric of this

(36:31):
culture that Saint Louis has had andnow is getting full. It's like it's
been here and the people who knewknew, but now with with Saint Louis
City and the MLS, and Imean you you can't listen to a city

(36:51):
broadcast without them referring to the cultureand history of Saint Louis soccer. That's
absolutely correct, and that's you knowthat it's a testament to what we've done.
Is a testament to what we've done. And and Garber was even said,
hey, this is the reason whySaint Louis needed an MLS team in
the history. You know, Iknow we wanted one sooner, but boy,

(37:15):
when we got one, is itoff to a roaring ring with a
great great stadium downtown. Uh.We've added we've added UH an award this
year where we you know, becauseof COVID, we've we've cut back a
couple of the major awards. Well, we're we're honoring the Jimmy Dunn High

(37:38):
School Coach of the Year this yearand it's going to go to Mark Geesing,
who is retiring from UH coaching outit out of Linden at Lindbergh ended
his career on a high note becausein the first round of the districts he

(37:58):
beat CBC and then they went onto be one of the final fours.
Yes, so you know, agreat, great opportunity for Mark to be
a part of the Jimmy Dunn HighSchool Coach of the Year Award. To
that point, it just is demonstrativeof how coaches play a part. You

(38:19):
know, Bill was talking about itearlier. Coaches play a part in an
an incredible part of building that legacy. Yeah, Jim continues, Yeah,
we have the two major awards forthe Kio Family Award and the Lori Clumbney
Award. The mail honoree for theKio Award is Pat Noonan, who's the

(38:42):
coach of Cincinnati, and oddly enoughhe will not be at the banquet.
We know he will not be atit because Cincinnati is playing Saint Louis City
in Cincinnati that night. And thenthe female and I spoke of this at
the banquet last year about our futurestars, how they have become, you

(39:04):
know, great soccer players in theirown right. You know, we have
Mark Segbergs and Tommy Burke Borlow's who'swith the Red Bulls. You know great
girls Matty Pegourney and Kirsten Davis.Kirsten Davis was our Future Stars as a

(39:25):
member of the Westminster High School teamand she's become a star now with the
Louisville team. So we have twofuture Stars that are playing on the same
team, Kirsten and Matty Pegourney. So Kirsten is going to be receiving the
Club the Award this year and she'ssaying that she's going to try and make

(39:49):
it in. I'm not sure ifit'll happen, but you know, at
least we have, we have ourhope because she wasn't here for her Future
Star Award. She was in Belfast, Northern Ireland with the under sixteen or
under eighteen team representing the United States. So yeah, we've we've had some

(40:09):
great, great girls that that haveyou know, angel Aikida, who's who's
back over in Europe playing just unbelievabletalent. The experiences that some of those
women have playing overseas, it's thestuff that that they dream about. And

(40:32):
then in some cases like Maddy mcgorney, she got to play in Champions
she got to play in Champions League. Now with that with a team that
was really undermanned, right, butexperience. Yeah, she'll have that for
her lifetime. Yeah. And andangel I love the family, the Kida

(40:54):
family. She just posted a pictureof her trip that was in Turkey.
And she's not a little girl anymore. She's not a high school she's a
young woman. And I mean,my goodness, these these these men,
Robbie Christo, you know, aduJa Hick are our men, you know,

(41:19):
playing now. And it's a testamentand an unfortunate testament that we have
been able to pick people in theirhigh school years who will go on to
play professional It's just a it's atribute to the caliber of players that are
playing high school ball. And I'mso glad that we were able to do

(41:39):
that, you know, so partof the tradition. If you want tickets,
go online, go on our Facebookpage. The first the first page
that you see on the on ourFacebook page is the banquet information for tickets
and ads. Come on down. The date again is March excuse me,

(42:00):
May the eighteenth, and Union Stationdoors open at five point thirty and the
dinner is at seven o'clock. Comingon down, we will have a dinner.
Thank you. Jill McDermott can geta dinner there. We're close,
just taking a quick breakstation idea, says KFN S five and ninety the fansl

(42:22):
United Soccer Sundays. I didn't getmy segment. He's coming up, uh
next Doctor John on his one andonly top forty hit. But it was
a biggie right please roul. That'sone of those songs man, that just
how often you said right place, there you go. Here's your host once

(42:42):
again, mister Tom Shore So ohactually it's as a time four. Yes,
yeah, I guess we got onTed the whatso segment brought to you
by Ted Way right? Hold wrong? That wrong? Okay. I am

(43:14):
watching the vinyl minutes of the UFOwomen Champion League semi final. Who's playing
ps PSG is hosting the own wellso two French teams. Lindsay Iran plays
for for Leo Leone. They areup five to three on the aggregate late

(43:37):
over over PSG. Yes, Ihate PSG and they will if they finish
it out. We'll play BARSA inthe Champions League. So both matches these
two second legs of the semi finalswere played in the Men's Club Stadium,

(43:59):
so outs over forty thousand for both. So women soccer globally is on it
and it's good stuff. Well don'tyou think that that that the the big
teams in Europe, not all thebig teams, but the big teams in
Europe embracing it has really just nodoubt, no doubt, but still have

(44:25):
to have quality play. Oh yeah, and these teams are loaded, right.
You remember the interaction between Lindsey Horanand Daniel vander Dunk, Remember the
hard tackle and Haran shoving her atthe World Cup And you know they're pals.

(44:49):
They are pals. You should seehim play bats right, and you
were shoving it saying what the yeah, what are you doing? What the
heck? Right? So it's thequality of play in the semifinals for championship.
Have you thought about this? Andlistening to you makes me think this
it's almost an exact parallel between theCat and Clark phenomenon. You know,

(45:14):
you bring the right player the rightplace, you know, right time,
you bring the quality of players andthe moment is right. The moment was
right for Caitlin Clark and this explosionto the point, don't you think everybody
was shocked by the fact that thewomen viewership outdrew the men's viewership. There

(45:36):
were a lot of people that wereshocked. I had to say, women
soccer is ahead of that. Yeah, okay, and it started in ninety
nine. Yeah, and the women'snational team has been a hot, hot
commodity at all the Olympics ever since. Right actually started in ninety six,
the women soccer in ninety six inAtlanta. That but now you're adding the

(46:00):
talent level, and you know, twenty years of talent increase. One of
the things I want to talk abouttoday is the influx of international talent in
the nws L this year, fromBrazil, from France, but most importantly

(46:24):
from Africa. The afric strikers areshredding defenses right now, Bigger, stronger,
yes, and faster. The qualitytheir quality of finishing is very high,
and some would say, oh man, we need some of the American

(46:45):
women to step up. Well,if you observe and you train with that
type of talent, your game isbound to step up, right, Jim,
that's the only way. You're right. That's absolutely correct. Yeah,
and you know I haven't. Theywere they were talking about the men from

(47:06):
Africa too, that they are comingin. Oh yeah, that have been,
you know, been a strong force. It reminds me of Pele's comment
what thirty forty years ago when hesaid someday Africa and African team will be
will win the World Cup and peopleyou know when when win win, And
then people pointed to France and said, well these are mostly African kids.

(47:30):
Yeah. Yeah, last or Fridaynight, see current who's up to a
roaring start under a lot Goo inInnovski. They were playing at LA at
Angel City, which is the sameas stadium as L A Fco fan wall.

(47:51):
Oh yeah, so they also drawvery well. And there was a
matchup where the defender for L Af Z is probably one of the fast
just as players in the league outsideback and this African striker and I could
look over at my computer and tellyou the names, but everybody was looking
forward do that matchup because of thespeed, and the African striker on many

(48:16):
occasions just separated from her. Yeah, and it wasn't a lack of effort,
it was just wow. Yeah, yeah. You can't teach you can't
teach speed, that's right. Youknow, we could teach ball skills,
but we can't teach we can't teachspeed. And Jim, let me let
me ask you this question right now, because I thought this a long time
ago, and I used to watchgo to high school basketball games. Right

(48:39):
there was no I think that injust pure speed, not not refined speed,
using it at the right time, but just pure speed. You never
get faster than you do as asenior in high school because those kids would
go one hundred miles an hour. They didn't have any control, but it

(49:00):
was it was basically too much speed. Well, now you've got kids of
that age, men and women, being taught how to define that speed.
That's how Barcelona gets four teenagers.Yeah, in their Champions League team.
It's unbelievable. I heard that commentfrom some people at Scott Gallagher. You

(49:22):
know that, you know, wecan teach them all the ball skills we
can, but we can't teach themspeed. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
So the two players I was describing, excuse me, was Temla joe
Inga. She is from Malawi,Okay, and there was another Malawi striker
playing for PSG. Malawi is asmall, yes, but they are dynamic.

(49:44):
And the defender for Angel City isSarah Gordon who was on the CUSP.
But maybe get some us call upsvery exciting action in the end of
it. So, if we lookat the standings, Kansas City current is

(50:05):
five one in er under the muchmaligned Lotoing and Offski. So did you
get a chance to meet Blackco whenhe was in town? Superior super secret
text line. I know he wasat the Amstraday, he was with Dave.
It's speed of thought, got it? Yeah, I one hundred percent
agree with that. That's that's whatseparates because this pure speed, it's just

(50:30):
phenomenal to watch somebody like Usain Boltsspeed. It's just like, oh,
it's eye dropping, but it's it'sthe how fast can you think? Which
is what you were talking about earlier, Jim, in terms of the uh
knowing where everybody is? I don'teven know where everybody is in this room.

(50:50):
Well, the speed of thought iswhat has Becky's our run still being
able to defend against Jesus. Yeahright, strikers right. And she will
wholeheartedly admit I have lost many stepsand I've never been as fast as the
people I played against. But it'sabout positioning right and being just being have

(51:14):
some poor thoughts. Becky has gottenreally plowed or shoved by a couple of
really young players this year, likerookies, and in one case, you
if looks could kill, I mean, Becky was not happy with this young
striker from Louisville. I mean,Jim, Jim, speak to your personal

(51:36):
personal life. As you get tothat point where you know you're not going
to be playing forever, that finallyset in on you and how do you
deal with that right that you know, like, Okay, well, you
know I'm a human being well playinga professional level, you know, like

(52:00):
Becky or even even Messy. Youknow, you'll know it when the time
is right, you know. Asan amateur. It was just like,
well, you know, I haveI have to start learning a living,
right, I have to start raisinga family, you know, I have
to start, you know, doingthings. And I got to start my
grandpa thing. Gotta do my grandpathing. But you know, it was

(52:23):
it was it was a good Itwas a good ending. Yeah. I
saw that I was being moved tothe backfield a little bit more, you
know, and I didn't like thebackfield. How much was pain an elements.
The older you get, the moreit hurts. I was very fortunate

(52:45):
that I never had any injuries untilI started playing indoor later on, when
I was probably forty years old. That on that carpet on topic on crete.
Yeah, yeah, and it wasShrek carpet. And I'm I'm paying
for it now, you know,I'm right. I had arthroscopic surgery,

(53:05):
but uh, you know now it'sbone on bone and you know, I've
had the shots that I told mywife the other day, I said,
you know, I might, Imight need to go in and have something
done. Yeah. I don't wantto do it, but you know,
right, I admit it. Iwant to pat myself on the back a
little bit after mentioning that I anticipatedthat Portland Orange would be making a change

(53:31):
on the sideline. They shoveled thedeck, they moved their head coach to
technical director, and they promoted oneof their assistant coaches that the bad man
and by all it counts his energy. It's really grabbing the team. They're
they're more, they're with it andthey want to do in a row.

(53:51):
So good for Portland, It's goodfor the league, for Portland to be
should have bet on it to thetop, should put a little money back
me. I continue to sing itfor The Women's Game Podcast with Sam UIs
latest episode is with Jamaican striker BunnyShaw. Bunny it is a great listen,
