(00:11):
It was beautiful day, Sunday day. I had the radio. I was
driving Trees went back. Lee andDell were singing a little runaway. I
was flying, yeah, running downdream never would come with me. Wow,
(00:39):
I like that song. That's oneof my favorite Tom Petty songs all
by far my favorite. Yeah.Welcome back everybody to this hour of STL
United Soccer Sunday, coming to youlive from KFN S five ninety the Fan
and what we call the Harry KioStudios to honor one of the greatest people
that we call it that because that'swhat it is. That's a name.
I got it. I got myarmy Knie found and I has carved it
(01:00):
on the door, So don't showaround with that. Then they were asking
me who did that? I know, I'll tell them I did it.
I'm proud of it. Hey,this this show is brought to you again
today by Mark and E. Meyerat n GK Law Firm, Saint Louis
Law Firm with local roots and nationwideresults in studio with us today of course
Ted running the board. Tom's rightover here, who I will introduce in
(01:21):
a minute. We have Jordan Williams, Dave Bursick and Daniel Dan, Daniel
Stebbebbe and I had to look atmy notes. I got Matt Baker coming
up. I hope everybody's relaxed wherethey are because there is so much This
is you know what this show islike today, Tom, this is like
the clown car at the circus. We open this thing up, I think
people podcast. Tom. Here's yourhost, Tom Schwarz. You just go
(01:47):
on in. Oh well, oh, I'm sorry. We're in the air,
ladies and gentlemen. Then man whoknows the x's and o's from Flyver
Footy, Matt Baker. How youdoing, Matt morning guys. I wish
that he had the depth that youguys have in studio there. Yeah yeah,
(02:07):
yeah. Then would you refer tous as a clown car? I
mean, I don't know, Idon't know if that's good for our image.
I like it, Okay, Yeah, I figure I think it works.
I think it works for your brand. Well played, Matt. Yeah,
now that is a left handed complimentif I've ever heard one. Okay,
Matt, you got to admit lastnight was better than Wednesday night.
(02:32):
Oh I will champion that cause thatlast night was better than Wednesday, and
if for three matches in eight days, if you're going to end that stretch,
you want to end it with amatch like last night versus Wednesday.
At the very least gives you somethingto build off of. It gives you
a lot more positive moments to takeaway. It gives you some more confidence
(02:52):
than a few of your depth pieces. I think we all feel a little
bit more confident about nickpy thorson nowthan we did on Thursday, for instance.
And and it gives you gives youa goal to build off of.
It's absolutely nothing else. Did youdisagree with anything I have to say or
if anybody has to say? Onlooking at this game, we scored a
goal, which is, by mycalculations, the first time a City player
(03:13):
has scored a goal in three hundredand sixty nine minutes. I wish you
weren't correct. I think you are. I it goes back to and actually
the storybook of that is it goesback Indiana Bashllev in the Intermami game first
half, even as the last playerto score City Gowal Luis Suarez had an
own goal in that game, butvas Lev also finishes it in this one.
(03:35):
I think we're remissed by not talkingabout Winsall and read a little bit.
I like Wensl. I think he'sa younger Tim Parker, to be
perfectly honest, And actually, Ithink Tim Parker had a very solid game
last night. By the way,I think, you know, he had
a night off obviously on Wednesday, and I thought he came back real,
real strong last night. But maybeit's because he had a lot of confidence
(03:57):
in Wensell as well. I thinkthe young man is solid, and I
think he needs more opportunities without adoubt and read, I guess I maybe
live under rock because I didn't knowhe existed. And I'm looking at going
who is number ninety nine? Youknow, I'm watching on TV at a
birthday party for my son, soI didn't get the whole experience as I
usually do. But you know,I thought, again he held his own
(04:20):
and showed some good stuff. Yeah, spot on. You can't overlook the
two city two players who had tostart. And by necessity I'd made a
joke earlier about depth. I mean, this is the opportunity that you want
to see taken advantage of. Whenyou have these depth issues, you want
to see your young players who arenot going to be given all of the
time in the world going forward, but they have to take the moments that
(04:40):
they're given and they have to makesomething of them. Jay Reid coming and
surprising everybody by having a number ninetynine on the field his first MLS start.
He had had one appearance in MLSwhen the New York Red Bull was
back in twenty twenty three, fora single minute of a substitute appearance,
but other than that, this washis MLS debut improper and he took advantage
of it. He provided yet anotherpossible answer to left back for San Louis
(05:02):
City, who I believe we're nowon four or at least five in the
season long conversation, we just gotrid of one. We brought up Jay
Reid, and what he gave uswas an opportunity to have a two way
player at left back and strong inthe attack. He did a fine job
defensively. I would credit him forhelping to neutralize a guy like brook Lennon
(05:25):
on Atlanta who he's been following Atlantaour MLS. You know the name Brooks
Lennin. He's a capable winger, capable wing back who oftentimes creates the most
dangerous opportunities for Atlanta. He leadstheir team and assists and he was neutralized
for large portions of the game thanksto Jay Reid, but also Reid got
his first assist, and it showshow strong he can be in the attack
in doing what exactly we've been missingfor a large portion of the time,
(05:46):
which is delivery service into the boxfrom the left side. And I was
so impressed with his on the ballabilities, his fearlessness in taking on opponents.
And he's a veteran, veteran asveteran as a twenty two year old
to be of the Red Bull system, right, So he's been with their
system since twenty eighteen or so,come up through their youth teams U nineteens
onto Red Bull two where he's playedmost of his time last year and we
(06:06):
scooped him up and it was asystem fits and they he's twenty two years
old, so he has such abig upside that he's capable of. I
wouldn't look for him necessarily to signa contract immediately or maybe have a huge
impact to city this year. Myboy did. He opened some eyes at
least for the future. And MichaelVensel continued opening eyes. This is Wentzel's
(06:27):
not available to us. Let's getthis out of the way. He's not
available to us based on his currentcontract for any future game this season.
He had his fourth call up thisyear, which per MLS roster rules,
makes him ineligible for any future shortterm call ups this season. We want
to see him in a City kitsthe rest of the season. We have
to sign him to first teams contract. Well wait, wait, wait,
wait, wait wit second wait,I sign them, I say, sign
them yet. Yeah, yeah, what you just said, Matt is according
(06:53):
to the rules, that was unlessthey sign him, that is the only
time we would see him in aCity uniform this year, after he gave
one of the best performances we've seenat City this year. Is that the
correct Yeah, the roster rules areconvoluted in this, and I think the
(07:13):
press release and the info that Citysends out is pursuant to that. If
you're playing for City two or anMLS Next Pro team, you can have
four short term call ups per season. Two of those appearances are max with
MLS League play, and then theother two are open to US Open Cup,
League's Cup, whatever. So he'sappeared now in one MLS game by
(07:35):
my count one Champions Cup game. But he's had total of four short term
loan call ups and so he's reachedthe maximum amount of time he can be
called up based on his City twocontract. And I'm fully of the same
opinion that Vensel has played himself intoa city contract as much as Johnny Kline
has. I'm not more And Ithink the only problem, guys that I
(07:56):
have is that we're if we're healthy, we're still pretty deep at center back
two, where rental would not begiven that many minutes. That's that's exactly
what I was going to say.At left back, though, we're not
deep unless you really want to putKyle Hebert out there. But when you
compare winsl to Kyle Hebert, Ithink Kyle probably gives you more in the
center back spot. So you're reallyjust hedging your bets on how Nielsen's legs
(08:16):
are going to hold up his kneespecifically. But at left back, I
thought, you know, as goodas Winslow was despite being turned on a
play where he was at a positionand Tim Parker bailed him out and Burkeie
bailed him out with a great save. I mean, I didn't think Reid
had a misstep all night long. And the only competition he has is Anthony
Marchanic. So if there's a conversationabout somebody who deserves, maybe not deserves
(08:37):
because Winsl's had more experience, butsomebody who you know, they need to
really consider signing, I think Reid'sprobably got a better shot than Winsl.
Does he not? I mean, look, man, I mean love God,
love Mark. He looks like aboy. We we We mentioned this
earlier. I mentioned this, andand Dale Shiley talked about this last night.
But the only concern about Reid waswas going forward, because physically he's
(09:01):
there, and defensively he's pretty he'spretty consistent, and sure enough I saw
plenty on the offensive end, atleast in comparison to Merchanic, where he
can certainly find himself on this teamand he wouldn't look out of place.
Well, I think you're right.I think the thing going for WINSL is
that you know, our need isis midfield and forward. Yeah you know
(09:22):
so, Yeah, I think theyprobably signed Johnny Klein, even though he
probably didn't show as much as whatthose guys that hunt. Well. Well,
the other thing about The other thingabout Reid is that you do have
merchanic, you do have Kyle Heber, but you also have a Kia Watts
who He's not going to use SerfThomas Totland on the right side. The
only reason Taltland subbed out he wasGass and Aki Watts has proven himself just
as capable. I think over thepast few games that left back and so
(09:43):
do you not have just a bodya time issue where you don't really have
any guys separating themselves. Do youhave a lot of I would say mid
to maybe above average players, dependingon how you look at it, defensively
or offensively on the left side. But even with Reed's performance last night,
like a caution to over selling whathe doing right now, I need to
see more body of work at thislevel. The promise is a one hundred
percent there. But maybe he getssome more time in league stuff. Maybe
(10:07):
he gets a call up where hecan play a couple of games in League
SUP or something like this to getmore of a sense of how ready he
is to the spot. Hey man, can you hold on? I'd like
to keep this conversation going between youand Daniel into the next segment. If
that's okay with everybody? Can youhold on all right? Yeah? Hey,
just a quick reminder, everybody, you're listening to KFNS five Night of
(10:28):
the Fan, Saint Louis and theSaint Louis United Soccer Sunday show coming to
you live Golden Iran coming. Youcan't hardly beat that, can't. We're
back, Here's Tom. We're justlike that, and we're still on with
(10:52):
Matt Baker from Flyover Footy. Ithink I interrupted you for that. Matt,
you want to continue. I wastrying to make a screaming finish thinking
my segment was over, but yeah, I mean to me. It boils
down to the left back spot.We haven't had a signature players separate themselves
(11:13):
from what anybody else has shown attheir best. A Kia Watts is the
most recent one outside of Jay Reid, and so I still want to see
more Watts at left back, alongwith twenty se more Reid at this point
now. And not to say eitherone of their steeling is similar to the
other. I don't think we've seenthat yet, but read right now currently
offers I would say the most extremeupside possible, But you do have to
look at overall roster constructions, You'regonna have merchanic, You're gonna have Hebert,
(11:37):
Watts, and Reid. Who's themost versatile. And I think David
was getting to this point is thatyou have versatility, like Daniel mentioned with
Hebert at setterback and left back. You have Watson versatility for his left,
right back and central the fensive midand so you look at Marchanic as probably
the least versatile. And I justdon't know much more about Jay Reid outside
of the fact that he's a fullbackin where he might be able to offer
(11:58):
additional help down the stretch. Butman, the I can't agree more that
the potential is so strong with jareHey, Matt, what have you thought
of the business CITYSC has done inthe last month or so? I feel
like when I look at your Twitter, there's always something someone coming and going.
A Z Jackson, I guess wasa player that they had bought and
then were able to flip him andget some money back. So what do
(12:18):
you think of just kind of thegeneral business and some more players that they've
been linked with in the last fewweeks. I nearly forgot that that as
news was just this past week andit feels like half a season ago,
but it's been. It has beenhot and heavy, and I think the
moves that we've seen from center Toykertto Jake Gerwin write the center back from
(12:39):
Australia to moving a Z to movingNicholas Sewer to getting ready and trying to
move Sam and dinner and right now, this is a This is a Saint
Louis City's team in need of arefocus, and Loose has taken on that
responsibility very strongly in fixing holes thathave presented themselves this year, but also
probably just clearing the locker room andidentifying what needs to change, both from
(13:01):
a locker room perspective and from awillingness to do whatever it takes to play
perspective. And he's changing things up. Him and Bradley Cornell, no doubt
are doing this in conjunction, butthey're changing a little bit of the locker
room presence, they're changing who's available, and they're bringing in some key talent.
I think that has been exposed forwhat Saint Louis is lacking in chance
creation in the central offensive areas andjust in experience. That's another thing that
(13:26):
I think Tigert and the latest rumorMarshall Hartzal is bringing is that experience.
Who got a crafty winger on thatlist? Can I get a creative presence
in the final third? How aboutI got I got the I got the
latter. I don't know about theformer those Twigert really wants to wants to
(13:46):
play, Yes, Daniel, Yes, Well, when it comes to Cedric,
I'm still fascinated by the decision,if you will, to announce him
as a midfield signing when every majorstatistic in every position he's played at all
his stops say he was a forward, And I wonder if that's an internal
decision. They always do that.If you think about the pregame things they
(14:09):
put out, they always have likethe guys not really in their own positions,
right, I mean so maybe Iguess so maybe I'm reading too into
it, But now I think you, I think you're not reading too much
into it at all. And Iwill say, just for for the listeners
here, if you read the gameday graphics the city puts out, it's
meant to be read a very specificway. It's meant to be read right
(14:30):
to back, left up, rightto left, back, to front and
so you'll see you'll see Thomas Cottlinat the top all the time. Yeah,
right back, read it right toleft, back to front, and
then you'll be able to picture andput together. Last night, for instance,
Nipie Thorson was playing on the leftmid indianas left right mid, and
you had your two forwards of Klausand jose Kajima, and they were listed
that way if you read it inthat manner. So that's that's my aside
(14:52):
for that one. But I willsay that the decision is intentional from City
to list Cedric Twister as the midfielder, and I think it does two things
for me. It shows the versatilitythey're looking to get from him, either
as a second striker, as awinger David was saying, or some attacking
midfielder role. In addition to thefact that I don't think that they want
(15:15):
to have him as a direct competitorto Clouds. Like being bluntly honest,
if they listed him as a striker, the first Sea jerk reaction everybody would
have is this is this is theguy who's either coming in for Salmon Dendron
who's going out, or he's comingin to compete for clouds. Yeah,
and I don't think that. Idon't think City wants to portray him as
a Klaus competitor. I think theywant to portray him as a Klaus enhancer
(15:37):
or augmenting what Klaus can do,like jose Kajima was doing last night,
or like Nupy Thorston has been doingout on the Wings, or even Indiana
Basilisk. To be honest, he'splayed a second striker role in the past
time as well. Yeah, Ithink I think there's a bit. Yeah,
I think you're managing players. There'sa bit of sensitivity to bringing in
your transfers, for sure, andI think that's resonated with some of the
questions I've asked players as it relatesthe transfers. And you know this,
(16:00):
being in the press conference room,I tend to throw one or two out
there just to uh, to gaugethe room. And when we talked to
Jokim Nielsen about Jake grid would write, I had asked him what it's like
to bring in a new talent. He seemed a little subdued in his answer,
saying, Hey, you know,we'll bring him in, we'll compete,
et cetera. Et cetera. WhenI asked Indy, Vassil loved the
same question, Hey, what's itlike bringing a new talent? Knowing that
(16:22):
there really isn't any rumors flying aroundof a player that could potentially play an
Indie's position, he was like,Oh, we love talent. Anytime we
can bring in talent, raise thebar. It's gonna be great for the
team. Chris Durkin had a similarresponse, And then when I talked to
Tim Parker again kind of subdued.Even though Tim shouldn't have anything to worry
about, but bringing an another centerback, you know, maybe maybe uh
(16:45):
causes some discomfort the room. Iimagine if I had asked Klaus about bringing
another striker like kout shirt there, there may have been one of those subdued
responses that we got from like aNielsen. So it's it's interesting how how
you gauge the team when you aska question as sensitive as transfers. Hey,
mat, let me ask you aboutKlaus. To me, he looks
(17:06):
lost, uh, goal scoring wiseor just in general, well, I
mean kind of position wise. Tedpointed out last night that he thinks Ted
thinks that Brad or somebody told him, Hey, stay in the box,
and we were talking about that earlier, but he just I was thinking about
(17:26):
it, and I think about everythingin terms of basketball, and I think
I was explaining this to Ed.It's like I was not the best player,
and there was a reason I wasalways open because the other team wanted
me to shoot right. And ifI were be the kind of person who
kept Tommy's open, Tommy's open,Tommy's open, there's a reason Tommy's open
(17:51):
because he can't hit the shot right. I was told you'd never missed a
shot, though that was me talkingto you, Okay, all right?
That there is an other perspective toall this. The other giving matters,
sourcing matters. But I think aboutit to the point where if you were
if you're a midfielder and the guythat theoretically you're counting on scoring goals,
(18:15):
every time I give you the ballwhere I think you're going to be,
you're not there, or you giveit up, I'm gonna maybe start thinking
I'm not going to be in sucha hurry to give you the ball.
And that's all based on personal experience, so it might not have anything to
do with real sports. Well,I mean, you can see that both
from a passing perspective on City, but also I would say mostly from the
(18:37):
defense, Like that's a good uh, it's a good metaphor for what the
defense will give certain City players. We've seen it where they will give City
players space, more in the midfield, more outside the box. And yeah,
conceptually in soccer, that just makessense. You're not trying to get
guys' space in dangerous areas. Buteven what they do against City is they
make them carry the ball more becausethere's a real understanding about city styles that
(19:00):
they will make passes trying to findopen space as opposed to having one b
ones on the dribble, and that'swhat happens for midfielders. But with Klaus,
I think last night I saw amore target striker where they were sending
the ball and he was staying morein the box. Definitely agree with that,
But what he wasn't doing is havinga second movement necessarily off the ball
(19:21):
into space, and so when hewould be fed the ball, he would
win some of these aerial duels. He had a pretty good aerial dual win
race, and he was getting theball into other players and he was dribbling
less with the ball trying to finda direct one du one routes to goal.
He wasn't playing with the ball asmuch at his feet, but when
he had those aerial duels won orhe was being targeted from long passes,
he wasn't necessarily doing much with theball except for the Indiana basilistic goal.
(19:47):
And that's a really good example ofhow I mean. It's probably the most
extreme example where he didn't have anopportunity to do anything but head the ball
back from the Jay Reed cross. But that's what Klaus can do, is
he can be that target striker andif he doesn't have the angle to go
for goal, then his role needsto be drawing players in in a really
deep area. I think that allowsspace to be created for others around him,
(20:07):
like Indiana basket lif So I pointto that goal is what we need
to see more of. If Klausis going to be staying in the box,
whether or not he's scoring goals ornot, he's just able to be
that deep lying presence or high updepending on what you're looking at. I
have to draw in defenders close togoal. That creates space inside of that
eighteen yard box here like six toten feet out of our sixty ten yards
(20:27):
out of goal, and that IndianaBaskelet goal is a perfect example of what
I want to see more of.In how Claus's position here, I'd love
to see him pointing up at thetop of the box as well, you
know, when Parker has the ballor oh yeah, you know, Luvin
has the ball deep. I meanfor me, that's just a you know,
since our system is undescribable at thismoment, that way, you know,
(20:52):
go back to basic simple things.Get your man on top of the
box, you know, on topof the d get the ball to his
feet, and then let our ourmidfield. You know, we have a
lot of talent at midfield, solet them run off of Klaus. And
I think that's what Klaus would liketo do. It just doesn't seem where
we have that set in our inour script, and it looks like that's
what they want Chris Durkin to do. They want Chris Durkin to get forward
(21:15):
and make himself a presence in thein the offensive third. But reality is
is once he gets the ball, very rarely does he have an option once
he gets there, because Klaus, like you guys said, will dump it
off and Matt, like Matt said, won't make that second movement once he
gives it up, you're passing anobody. How many we saw two balls
thrown to the back post yesterday thatnobody was around. Yeah, I say
(21:37):
Thos does a great job in havingtheir players look direct goal, but at
some times you need to have thatoff the ball movement that you're not making
a direct past the goal, you'removing more horizontally or trying to create space
off the ball, whether it's throughyourself or for the benefit of others.
And that's what I think, that'swhat a big piece is missing with Klaus
and I wonder if a guy likeMarcel Hartel, who sent are attacking midfield
(22:00):
there we are rumored to have alreadysigned, that's what the rumor is now,
might impact that because his role asin attacking midfielder at that higher level
could mean more positive on the ballactions that could play well with pilots and
really provide what Chris Durkin has beenasked to Daniel to your point, just
he hasn't had any opportunity to playit off, all right, the great
Matt Baker, thanks a lot,Matt, Thanks you guys. Good time.
(22:23):
Now that's going to finish up thissegment. I believe we're gonna start
that. I think it is.Yeah, it looks like Bill. So
everybody's now it's it's going to bethis guys here. Oh yeah, Well
I'm gonna I'm gonna back in theclown car. I'm gonna speak a lot
of a lot of truth. Allright, Well that's last. That's good.
Hey, we want to thank JordanWilliams. We want to thank Dave
Bursik. We want to thank DanielSteve for coming. You can catch Jordan
(22:48):
and uh Daniel, excuse me onchannels two and eleven the ones to watch
and you'll you'll be able to watchtheir ascendency to the leadership of their various
departments there before they get called upthe networks. This is k f N
S five nine of the Fan inst Ol United Soccer Sunday coming to you
live. We'll see you in justa few minutes, So don't go anywhere.
(23:12):
Plead please when you give me noclaim my The Nasty Sail by mister
(23:48):
super wa wah wah Way and theJeff Beck Group bringing us back Dogs.
(24:17):
Hey, careful listeners to this musicon this show will realize that that was
Rod Stewart singing that song as itwas the one the one before that,
which probably no better. Every picturetells us that had a little bit of
talent, Yeah, a little bitof talent Jeff Beck and Rod Rod was
Rodd was a singer with Jeff Beckwhen the Jeff Beck groupers started out low
(24:38):
these many years ago. But Idigress. What I'm really here to tell
you is welcome back to this nextsegment of STO United Soccer Sunday, coming
to you live from KFN s F. When when is the segment? Yes?
When when is the uh? WhenI know it's coming up after Tommy?
(25:00):
Oh, Tommy's Tommy's open. Allright, I'm going to just go
through my notes real quick. Ialready talked about the Turkyrie, Irving Country.
I want to talk about a halfhour. I want to talk briefly
about forgetting. Do you know edthat the Italians, Yes, like they
evolved from the Romans? Right, they had forgotten how to build a dome?
(25:22):
Yes, like they paid for thecathedral in the Duomo in Milan.
But they have Florence, but theydidn't Well, the Pantheon was the last
dome build. Yeah, that waslike fifteen hundred years before, and they've
forgotten how to do it. City. The comparison is that that was like
fifteen hundred years fourteen, fifteen hundredyears and they forgot You can you can
(25:45):
imagine that, Oh yeah, youmight forget how to build a dome.
You had the vandals at the gatesand all that kind of stuff. Kind
of busy, kind of busy.Yeah, city has forgotten how to score
goals. So that's the comparison thatI would make. We don't have time
to and on these things. Wehave to quick fire because I have so
many because we had such a bigSo you just remember this. Eleanor eleanor
(26:08):
swelling all right, Jack Jarmando.Uh, Okay, I did talk about
not being able to understand the announcers. It's ridiculous. Studio is terrible or
worse, Chillini, I mean, where is he dab no no that she
(26:30):
works for a different network, althoughPeter Schmichael is working for both of them.
Ted, don't interrupt me. Igotta get going here. Uh.
I mean, do I really haveto learn a different language to watch the
US? I should not? TedOkay, Uh, Home and hosed.
I heard somebody use that expression.I hadn't heard that. I really like
(26:52):
that. It's like, you know, get the game over and go home,
get showered, go home, home, and hosed. I really liked
that. I thought you were talkingabout the officiating last night. Yeah,
oh my god, that's a verygood one. You know what the guys
were really Wednesday night? He couldhave been last night. May wonder if
(27:18):
they got a little from the Uhmaybe Okay, quickly, Danny Higginbotham did
the did the color last night onthe Apple TV, which I hate Apple
TV. I'm to the point nowwhere I just hate it. I had
to. I had to. Youknow, Sally's gone, so I moved
(27:38):
the other TV into the into theliving room. How quickly we revert to
our past? Gone? Boom?Uh, get that other TV out here.
But that's what you gotta do ifyou want to, if you want
to, like watch the COPA,you can't because you can't soccer. Oh
my god, it's crazy. I'mmy eyeballs brought the foul off fallout foules
(28:03):
last night Chile or yesterday afternoon Chileversus Proud thirty seven fouls. You thought
you saw foul. City City islike it's it's like the under twelve league
inter MLS. These guys are hardcore. They don't care if your faces here.
They're going to kick the ball man. It's unbelievable. Why not a
(28:26):
high boot? I thought our newguys played really well last year and I
meant to ask everybody just bailed outof here last year? HU last night
or last year? The new guysplayed the new guys last night? I
thought played well, Yes, Andhere's what I would have asked if I
if those guys wouldn't all run outon me during my segment. Thanks guys.
(28:51):
By the way, if let's saytrends continue, because that's a tendency
in trends continue, maybe they'll break, maybe they won't. But at what
point does City say uh to say, Hey, you know what, we're
gonna play young guys. They can'tthey can't well they can't call them up
(29:15):
the contract, right, They're gonnahave to No, but the money,
ted, did you look at theirbench last time? I mean the bench
is all I mean, they're loadedwith young guys. That what I'm saying
is, but the rules about howyou can contractually treat their play would it
would won't allow it, Okay, all right, but you can make a
(29:36):
general decision. It's like the problemsI just have with the Cardinals when when
they played when Whitey was coaching, they have one great year and the next
year they'd suck. For some fromthat's my memory anyway, And I was
always of the opinion Saint Louis isa kind of baseball town when you could
say, you know what, wesucked this year. It's just the way
injuries all this kind of stuff. So we're gonna work on developing talent,
(30:00):
yes, and and just just theguys that they have. At what point
do they say, hey, Klaus, you know, sit down, because
we're going to put these young guysup here and see if we could.
We're going to have to do somethingbecause this isn't working. I wish it
was easy for them to do that, but it's not. Well, I
(30:22):
don't think it's easy. But Ithink if you make the decision on okay,
these are the guys we're gonna we'regonna keep. Well, here reads
the boats game. How was theadjustment? He goes, It was easy.
We played the same system, right, right, that's the key.
Well, I think I think youhit one because we talked earlier, and
we talked several times how last yearone of the reasons the team was so
(30:44):
successful is that we brought somewhat ofa unique style of play to the to
the league that they people were havinga hard time adjusting to it. Well,
this year, we're continuing to dothe same style of play, and
guess what the league's adjusted to it. I think that what do we do
now? There are some shredded Miamibecause Miami is all about going north right,
(31:07):
and these teams that bunker, wecan't we can't, we can't break
them down. A couple of things. One thing is that the we talked
about it last year last week,is that the MLS is a situation where
every team seems to be getting betterevery year. Yes, and you know,
(31:30):
you have to make adjustments, andsometimes it looks to me you can't
do anything about injuries. And they'vehad a ton of injuries this year,
right, So at some point, you know, maybe this year, you
know everybody's ambition, well, youknow, we got to be better in
the playoffs. Well, maybe youdon't make the playoffs, and at some
point do you make the decision,Well, We're not going to keep playing
(31:53):
the guys we've been playing. We'regonna play different guys because we need that.
That's the way this world we livein is. Well. I don't
know that, but maybe it is. This issue is not new for this
year too. If you think backlast year, the second half of the
season, they didn't do well rightexactly, So I mean maybe the comment
(32:13):
I made a moment ago is alittle bit needs to be recouched in the
terms that they the other teams beginto figure this out last year and they
so the second half of the seasonturned out as it is, and the
playoffs turned out as they did well, Ted Ted said last year, and
then at the beginning of this year, for sure, and I just some
I think it's it's true. Teamshave read the book, they've seen the
(32:37):
play, they've seen the movie. They've figured it out, and the it's
the definition of an insanity, rightis to keep doing the same thing that
doesn't work. And you know, maybe it changes. Maybe these guys they're
bringing in from Europe, you know, pick it up. But sometimes you
(32:58):
just don't have a bad good year. And last year we got every break
we did and every break we gotwhen we when when somebody passed the ball
to Klaus he put it in thegoal. He didn't hit it over the
over the the bar he did.You know, It's just they And the
other thing I was going to sayis that that I hate to keep quoting
(33:22):
techts and going to get a bighead. Is the point you made about
a month ago. Yeah, I'llgo around there and left the back of
his head out. Why don't youjust pat his back for him? Because
you're so good at that? Uhis? Gee? Who to thunk we
would miss Jared Stroud this much? But I think that that the whole element
(33:44):
of being an underdog and the wholeworld's against US teams have used that since
the Gladiators right to to to pumpthemselves up, and last year, last
year, the biggest difference, Ithink from just my casualness about observation is
(34:05):
that they don't have that attitude anymore. And you know when you said it,
when you said that about Jared Stroud, I thought ted making another stupid
point that I don't agree with, and then damn it, I end up
agreeing with him. I really hatethat. I really hate that, But
I've learned that you're much better offwhen you admit those kinds of things.
But I think that's a big partof it is that he was just a
(34:29):
s disturber. Yes, and theydon't love your team, right, hate
on the other team. Dennis Rodmankind of guy, right exactly. Let
me see if I made all mypoints here. I did talk about that
Reggie Jackson thing. If you havenot seen the Reggie Jackson comment and you
(34:49):
want to know about America, man, he just sums it up. And
I think this is the greatest countryin the world, certainly the greatest country
I've ever been to. I don'twant to live anywhere else. I love
Saint Louis. I mean, Ilove my life. But there are things
in our history that are ugly. And they have a monument right the City
(35:10):
Park exactly, one of the oneof the many things that that we're that
that we we shouldn't be so proudof. And you can't ignore it.
You got accept it if you wantto be a better person. And you
know, maybe if people don't wantto be a better person, maybe they
just want to go out on theirelectric boat and then worry about sharks.
I don't know kind of thing. What do you guys, I'm going to
(35:35):
be doing that night. Oh I'mone hundred and fifty percent into the debate.
Popcorn. Maybe here's what here's Oh, that's another thing. Ted says,
Oh, you like popcorn, thisis the thing you got to get.
And it's this device that you putthe popcorn on in and put in
your microwave with no it's plastic, silicone, and there's you don't put all,
(36:00):
you don't put anything in it,and it makes perfect popcorn. You
almost if you learn it. Ifyou resist, it says turn it off
when it's two seconds in between thepops. And I'm like, I'm really
you know, one thousand, onethousand one, you know, and you
really have to be firm because sometimesI just I can't wait any longer.
(36:21):
I've got to get it out andI'll have a few unpopped kernels, otherwise
it pops all the kernels. It'sdelicious. Go to olive oil, little
Red who did Rob Rooney? Thankyou Rob Rooney, because I am eating
popcorn like you. Just drizzle alittle olive oil over a little salt cheddar
(36:42):
cheese, a little salt. Ohmy God, made something yesterday in a
skillet. Yeah, well it it'swhat. However good it is, it
pales in comparison to this. That'swhat you need to watch the EuroCup and
Coca. Oh hey, it's timefor Into the Weeds with Edmundo. Into
(37:02):
the Weeds. I like that.So yeah, well that would be my
segment. My segment would be inthe weed singular ed would be into the
into the weeds a little bit.So this is from the summer when a
certain individual in this room turned sixteen. And it's also when the summer when
(37:25):
music, rock and roll music justbegan to go from being about cars and
dances and girls to begin to integratemore folk serious themes in it. And
this song was written performed by theAssociation as our first big hit. It's
in and this is a little bitmore into the weeds than you want to
(37:49):
go. This is in a Dorianmode, which if you but this song
is really into the weeds. It'sreally into the weeds, which used to
harpsichord and the thing sounds like ait's actually a recorder, which was a
million medieval instrument. Yeah, theDorian mode was developed in in the grease
(38:09):
but big and medieval time, alongwith the Dorian column. That's right,
that's dory. But nevertheless, sothis song generated a lot of interest because
the Dylan asked lyrics, piling alot of lyrics into this timeframe, so
you weren't exactly sure what you werehearing. Made people suspicious because the chorus
(38:30):
was and then along comes Mary.Well sixty six was when people began smoking
dope more and being more vocal aboutit, and the Stones were getting busted
for it and other people were gettingbusted for it and when so the song
leaves you with the impression that Maryis the solution to your problems, and
(38:51):
it's not. It doesn't say that, it's just you know, I mean,
there's references to her and she butyou know, Mary marijuana a small
sta. You know, people gotvery picky about that, and it didn't
like it in some stations, bannedand it sold. That's I don't know
if they were on It's old ornot, but they did open the legendary
(39:13):
Monterey Pop Festival. They were thefirst act on that. Do you know
what my friend Honor Spanish, oneof my Spanish in laws, what they
called marijuana Well Maria Maria. Yeah, along comes Maryanga Maria. So anyway,
anyway, and The Association went aroundfor several years. I conted up
(39:37):
forty one members played in that bandunder that name, And before they were
the Association, they were this looseamalgamim that was a house band at the
Troubadour on the Sunset Trip in LosAngeles, and uh, it was sort
of like you could it's almost likean open mic and show up and we'll
put you on stage. So CassiElliott we wandered down from her place up
and so the Association wasn't really aband it was. It was just an
(40:00):
association show. And one of thefounders then fiance now wives, said what's
you just called the Association? Sothat stuck and Crosby, Dave Crosby would
come down and really it was quitea fertile breeding ground. But along comes
Mary nineteen sixty six, big summertimehit. I love that song. It
(40:23):
still sounds good. And these guysall came from mainly vocal groups, rock
and roll bands, so they couldsing the pants office. They played that
song It's open December eighth, nineteensixty eight. Well, sixty sixty eight.
That's interesting. He was just gettingto it. Yeah, that's sixty
(40:44):
six, But sixty eight. Theseguys also recorded Rich Bear Heads Up.
They also recorded Babe, I'm goingto Leave You, the led Zeppelin made
famous about four or five years later. So anyway, the association comes married
my trip into the weeds today onthe Minutia of pop music quickly super secret
(41:07):
text line from Santi Future is brightwith win soul. You need to wear
some shades, Mike Sorber, Holycow. And then there's another one here.
Sorry. Mike sends us a websitewhich I'm not going to be able
to do. You get the Atlantic? I don't get. I already subscribe
(41:28):
to it. I like a lotof people do the Atlantic? Atlantic or
Athletic? Oh, I don't know. Mike's probably the Athletic yep. Greg
Keller the schools and clubs that builtthe US M and T. Well,
thanks Greg, I'll read it laterbecause I can't really read it right now.
(41:49):
Hey, the people love women sports? Yes, like be three o'clock
today, Caitlin, Really? Whattime? Three? On? What?
ESPN? ESPN? Okay here? What tickets are going forward for that?
(42:12):
Well? I just looked it upby the geek. Yeah, from one
hundred and thirty eight dollars thirty eighttoo, yeah, so I was showing
that that Jordan's a year ago. Those would have been from thirteen. Yeah.
Right. Did you hear the topprice? It was asked, No,
I heard yesterday. I think thatthey were going for five grand.
(42:37):
Yeah, so hey, well I'msure the the play that you got the
stadium right right, right right,so hey, big city, big city
money. Along with that, atthree o'clock, I will be doing dual
screens the yes, hang on,that's checking folks. Portland Thorns will be
(43:05):
posting can't say current all right? And then at five we've got them see
hosting Washington. And these are fourof the top five clubs in the SOL
and they truly could be a aprecursor to the Semis in the league.
(43:36):
They these are the top teams playingthe best soccer in the league right now.
The side Orlando Orlando at the top. And I was watching that on
Friday night Orlando beat Utah sixth tonothing. Marta thirty thirty seven year old
(43:58):
Marta scored two goals, assisted anotherone. That Orlando team is good and
Utah. Utah is a expansion team. They're very very young. They just
got shredded and their coach Amy Rodriguez. She kind of smiled at the other
(44:23):
coach and they shook hands. It'slike, you guys are good man.
I mean, and I mentioned itlast week or the week before. To
me, that's the difference that Iobserve in the nws L for the w
NBA is that they're so much animosity, yeah, and hating going on of
(44:51):
three or four new players that arecausing the tickets to be five thousand dollars.
Cut it. Have you heard Charlesyour head out of your you know
what and enjoy it. You're CharlesBarkley, talk about it? He said
no. He says the exact samething that the old expression of looking at
(45:13):
gift horse in the mouth. Imight not like the color of the of
the gift horse, I might notlike the way it runs, or you
know, it might not listen tome or whatever, but it's a gift
horse. It's increasing everybody's salary andlivelihood. And I mean, you talk
(45:37):
about making people look small, heyall sudden? Okay, there standings.
You had took some time to figureit out, right, Well, they
had. Caitlin had to get pissedoff. She had thirty the night they
(45:59):
said she couldn't play in the Olympics. Yeah, but they that team is
the big the big Leah Boston who'salso from South Carolina. Oh, okay,
she's she's good. She's finally cominginto her own and that league.
(46:21):
Hey, those players plaited in thefinal four and the way that Yeah,
they go right from college to thedraft. Do this startle the schedule for
the next two months they're playing everyother night. Well, they got a
month off between the end of ofthe women's collegiate Yeah, until the NBA.
(46:45):
I'm telling you it's brutal. Itis brutal and fever work at Gitlan
Wace Birth they have any time topractice, right. So anyway, three
Beaver at Chicago at WNBA three o'clock, Portland hosts the Kansas City Kansas City
(47:14):
Top Top Teams, Top Games, and Portland will have twenty thousand people at
that match with just watch women's sports. So that also games on who's carrying
that that is on airmount okay becauseI'm looking at today. Also at three
o'clock in the in the euro coupis yeah, Scotland versus Hungary, but
(47:37):
now Switzerland plays Germany at the sametime. And then in the Copa of
today at five, the USA playedBolivia, So it would be interesting.
You know, you can see, really we'll see a variety of soccer styles
and levels of ability, if youwill. Today the biggest straw is going
to be a Caitlin versus what's hername? Yeah? What are they?
(47:59):
What are they on? Again? Are they on TV? And if maybe
oh yeah again. You know Isaid this from the get go. This
has the potential to be uh magicLarry And you know, you think about
the Larry Bird. He got allkinds of grief from the players till they
played him. And once they playedhim, they said, he's one of
(48:21):
us. Le jet Man, yeah, he is jet And Caitlin Clark,
whatever they think about her, isa legitimate star. Let me say this.
Angel Reeves is legit. Oh forsure, she is Rodman. Hey.
You know her ability to rebound andfinish in traffic she finished like McHale,
(48:45):
McHale, Oh yeah, right, right right. But her ability to
gain a rebound offense, she's good. You know. It seems to me
that the women's League there's a lotof analogy that can be that. We
were just talking earlier about this week'sgame down in Birmingham, between the Carlin
and the Giants. There's a hugenumber of similarities between the situation that the
(49:10):
guys in the negro leagues played andtrying to get more recognition, to get
better playing and earn some money, some money to what the women are now.
They're on that cusp and people likethat are coming up that now because
of all the the this year's NCAAWomen's Finals, huge draw, and that's
(49:32):
carrying over and people beginning to saywhat Ted has been an advocate for,
particularly on the WOSO side, forwomen's soccer, but women's sports in general.
Watch it. It's it's not justoh watch those you know, it's
a bunch of girls. It's goodathletics, good athletes playing good quality of
balls. It's different. You know, it's like going to watch you know
(49:53):
you can. I watched part ofthe twenty four hours of Lamont last last
Saturday, amazing amount of it becauseI got sucked into it. I don't
care much about stock car racing. They're both racing. They're just different,
and you know, I just appreciatethe difference and go with it. Uh
I think again, I mean Isaid from this it's all about putting butts
(50:14):
in the seeds and well, finally, okay, But but this point that
you that you're bringing out is thatsome these players have been wronged previously and
this person, who they may notparticularly care for, is going to help
(50:38):
get right a lot of those wrongs. And if you know, okay,
go ahead and knock or over doall that stuff, do whatever you want
to do, complain about it,you know, but then don't catch the
checks. You know. Yeah.The w n B a twelve teams team,
(51:04):
so there's only one hundred or rosters, right, okay, So it's
competitive. It's very very competitive, and it's the they're the best. The
US women will win the goal inParis and they'll win it and blow out
Fashion without Caitlin. Without right there, we dominate women's basketball. And that's
(51:29):
why those women in that league weregoing in the fall and winter, the
playing without a die, without adie, and they make more money there
and they do here. That isa problem and that's going to change.
But the first thing you got todo is get butts in the seat.
(51:50):
And if once, once that happens, then then you can make demands.
I think that that will hold onhow many times if I do the crowds
lately a lot. They're changing themenu. Do it dominate? Yeah?
Well I think I think the guyalways playing arena, but they plaited.
(52:14):
We're the ball boys right at horizon. It would move it because it's good
bez well, it would be goodbiz to have n WSL team to a
women's soccer team here too, arewe o going somewhere? We got it?
Minute start the music. Hey,I want to give a quick quick
(52:36):
shout out to a friend of minewho's U gonna undergo under the knife tomorrow
for a significant surgery. So,uh, Ruben, thinking about you will
be rub Come on, rub pullthrough. But we got Ruby, that's
right. So ladies and gentlemen, this is time for us to pack up
our clown car. Tommy, it'snot gonna be hard now. Only guys
(52:59):
we can in that little I thoughttoday was great. I got shotgun.
I thought today it was great.I love, I love. It was
like a barstool. It was likea barstool that's always been comfortable, that's
our seated, our state of gold, and that people bothering me. This
has been sto United Soccer Sunday comingto you live from the Harry Kiyo Studio
(53:22):
at KFN S five Night of theFan. It's Saint Louis. Join us
again. Next week we will beright back for Tom for Ted. This
is Edmundo saying bye bye.
