(00:00):
And at first people were acting likeI was inviting the Bloods and the Cripsover
for Brunswick one of the Paul shows. Because the community are like I don't
want to get all spiritual and thespiritual people are you making fun of us?
It's the same brain wave laughter andmeditation with the whole rapture adjacent times
we're living in. We need agreat way to uplift What did my friends
say? He's like, I getit. The comedies like the Loo.
Stranger Connections is the embodiment of Lisadavid Olsen's perspective of we're all just friends
(00:24):
who just simply haven't met yet. It's an exploration of the weirdly wonderful side
of life and a look at thesingle commonality we have with each other our
differences. Slip off your shoes, pour a cup of your favorite and let's
meet this week's barrel of quirks.Welcome to Stranger Connections, where I celebrate
wonderfully weird people and quirky stories.I'm your curious beast and host Lisa david
(00:50):
Olson. Invite me to your nextevent. I'm the area's only interactive speaker
and improvisation Ninja, So invite meto your event. Right today, We're
going to kick off Humor Month withsomebody I've been following for quite some time.
Can not be leave she's here. Please welcome Carla Collins, see Kali
(01:14):
Chalons. It's like my American familyin Michigan. My Minnesota accent. Is
that what you mean? Maybe Ijust go Wolverines. This is what is
making misgive me those vibes to beon your show. Lisa David Olson three
names, Oh my good, Well, because Lisa Olsen's so common that I
(01:34):
had to steal some from my husband. So that's all that that is.
But now the magic is gone nowthat you know. But you are.
Let's see comedian actor writer mc DidI read auctioneer? I do. I've
been auctioneering lately. I'll be auctioneeringfor the Our Lady of Malibu school coming
(01:57):
up this month, in fact, bringing me back some last year. There
is about forty items. So it'sjust tantric of me up on stage,
just pitying wealthy illuminati people against eachother. Just come on, you're a
Malibu it's red, but you youcame from a different background, did you
not? Oh? There she isgot such a hideous picture. So those
(02:20):
of you on just Audio will haveto head over to my YouTube channel to
see that Carla Collins was a weathergirl when they were called weather girls.
Apparently I was. I was aweather girl. That was my very first
TV gig, and I'm going totell you I was like twenty four years
old and I'm like, I hadmade it, bitches, I'm on National
(02:42):
TV. Don't even I got yourcold front. Oh well, And it
was the early days of the WeatherNetwork, and I like to tell the
story that you know, they werestill working out the glitches and we were
live. It was also out ofMontreal, but the English even though I
speak French, I just mainly didthe English side, and that did not
(03:04):
broadcast to Montreal at the time,so we're like ghost broadcasting. And one
time it was just a giant lettersfog behind me for five minutes, just
a giant letter f like it filthyepisode of Sesame Street. And I don't
know what I spoke about for thosefive minutes. I remember my boss saying,
you could have just left the frame, and I'm like, no minute.
Now. It's is that when youfound out you could just go with
(03:27):
it and just make things happen ordid you already know that before you started
being famous telling the weather? Theboss was like, could you please do
something else? I don't know that, even though I stayed with broadcasting for
a long time, so I didtry out comedy very early on. I
immediately got put in Just Relapse. It was great, except for I had
a gigantic nerve problem. I couldnot eat for about a week up until
(03:52):
the show, and I was bulliedlike crazy. I didn't have a thick
enough skin for at least I mean, the other comedians were men and women.
Horrific to me. It was allBamby does comedy, Weather Girl tries
comedy. So I I pieced outand said I don't need this. I'm
on the Weather Network and I hada radio show, so I'm like and
I left it. And then Ijust became an age a while ago where
(04:15):
I don't care what other people think, and now I would do I could
do forty five minutes at a garagesale, like now I can't wait to
get on stage. I've become thetrope of It's my only happy place,
So no more nerve problem. It'sgood therapy, and you really have to
be in love with it to doit, and so I so, yeah,
I did come back around. It'sa two parter. Yeah, but
(04:39):
you do so much with I knowyou just said that you were fluent in
French. So that is a becauseof where you live, because of my
mom. Yes, and I docome from Sue Saint Marie, Ontario,
so there was a pocket. It'sa there's a big Francophone population there,
and so I went to an allFrench school. I have great, great
(05:00):
language skills and zero mass skills, not unlike Barbie, but like not French
immersion. I mean, there wasn'ta word spoken in English. So very
grateful for that, because it's sogreat to learn the language when you're a
kid, because you don't you know, you don't care if you make mistakes,
and your ears more receptive. Ithink, so, yeah, oh
(05:23):
that's incredible. Well, no,wonder you have the French character that you
do. That is fantastic. Playmy love letter to France. I lived
in France, did a third yearuniversity there and that's where I started on
radio. Showed them catlat Nobody cansay my very anglophone name. My mom
(05:43):
was a Jelou but Collins my dadso yeah, I started this because I
just feel like the French are justso confident, and Soufle is my alter
ego. She's who I writ Iwas instead of just a goof. But
have you been the character play atcomedy shows as well. Just in the
last year, I started bringing herout and doing comedy clubs and I would
(06:09):
show up at soous Flee the lingeriewith the you know, the faux cigarette
holder, and it's soliberating to doa character, you know, and so
and then you know. Then Iwent back to the comedy Shota and they're
like, where's the French chick becauseyou're in underwear. Well mostly actually said,
(06:30):
well the French lingerie with all that, like, but you know,
not Amish underwear. But I mean, I'm not in a G string or
anything. I've got the right girl. You're you have a hot body,
come on, you might as wellshow. Well, that's just because I
work out so I don't go toprison. It's a part of my therapy.
I'm a very manicck obsessive person whenit comes to things. So if
(06:50):
I get into working out, I'mworking out. I'm working out right now.
I'm punching right now. Keigles everyoneone, two, three, that's
right in there. Sometimes. Thisyear's Clay opened for when I was headlining
and people were were you? Theydidn't they cop to that it was me
doing both, and I'm like, really, I'm just wearing a wig,
(07:12):
like you can't come on with thejaws. You know very well it was
me. I'm both characters. It'sthe same, the same out the kid,
same fish nets. So you woulddo that character as the opening,
then come out as Carla. Yeah, I would. MC would bring me
out and then a couple other comediansand then I would headline as me.
You tell me how many comics openfor themselves. That is fantastic. Never
(07:33):
heard of that before. Look, saving people money, it's very meta.
Well, share a room, It'sfine, I'm fine, perfect And uh
so you call yourself an emotional supportcougar as a joke, but you're also
huge into animals, Like do youhave a pack of something at your home?
(07:58):
This is the first time that Ido. I am without pack.
I lost my little doggie last year, the last of three, so it's
just and because you know, shewas basically I don't know where I stopped
him, where she began because Ihad her categorized as a service dog,
so brought her to Canada. Ido have some cats on my friend's farm
(08:20):
in Canada. Like I got intocats at first, I was like,
what's with the cats? I getenough rejection in Los Angeles. But I'm
all, yeah, all the animals, horses. I was like an aging
Disney princess. I had chickens inthe bathtub. I had cats and dogs
and a horse. And you know, they would dress me in the mornings.
I'm like, what I'm seeing hammerplants. No, I'm not wearing
(08:43):
statement pants. So but yes,I just finished writing a book that's like
a children's book, but mostly it'sjust an inspirational book. Is more of
a self helper called The Way,And that's a homage to my dogs,
especially doctor z Eira. That's sosweet. Yeah yeah, I like them
more than people understood. I waveat dogs. I'm that idiot smiling and
(09:09):
waving at dogs, and the personmight wave back. I'm like, no,
no, no, it's your labrador. Yeah yeah, I'm not talking
to you. And you have adog, right, we do? We
have munch Yeah, rescue dogs talkingto girl. Oh good good. Then
you know she's she's my straight man. Yeah and yeah. People hate puns.
(09:31):
So that's my love of puns,is people pretending to hate them,
but you know they're addicted. They'rejust not going public. I love puns,
so I find it in homage toher. I'm down for good puns.
So you don't have to no apologiesfor me. Almost all of the
things you do are puns. Ilook at the titles of your shows and
they're killing me. I should havewritten a list, but every single thing
(09:54):
that you have, you're I'm lookingat your list right now. I see
chuckle and chill. That's not apun, but it's a very great play
on words. You have so manyplays on words. People should just look
at all your stuff. Let's talkabout chuckle and chill. Yeah, I'd
love to. I should have beenlike a copywriter or something, because that's
my word plays, my thing. It is three skilled. Well, so
(10:16):
chuckle and chill kind of happened onaccident, as they say, but it
falls under my laugh of attraction umbrellaLisa, and this is just just as
the Jean Claude Pandam was hitting.I would go to this wellness center of
course in Los Angeles, where youknow everyone's a guru, yes, And
(10:37):
it drives me crazy because I literallyI was writing my own meditations because the
ones online there's the guy with theBritish accent who I think talks down to
me. And then there's a womanwith a faux accent I'm pretty sure who
kind of sounds porny. And thenmy my yoga instructor literally said it,
now, take a deep breath inthrough your vagina, and I was like
(10:58):
what, And of course I giggledlike a fourteen years because that's when I
send to you like a fourteen yearold boy, and I'm like, can
it breathe? Do? I haveto find it in that ninety five masks
rebul I find one so tiny,So I like, it's very intimidating here.
And a lot of my friends werelike, you know, even the
word meditation. I took it outof the title because uh, you know
(11:20):
that I was just trying to takethe woo and the cringe out a bit
right. People would say, Idon't want to, I'm too intimidated.
I'm doing it wrong. I'm like, it's just breathing and relaxing. So
a breath guy didn't show up,and I said to my friend, Look,
I've always I'm going to do somecomedy and then I'll lead everybody through
like an authentic guided meditation. It'snot me talking about dating or something while
(11:41):
you're meditating, because that would beannoying. Yeah, So I came up
with that and because I know, and at first people were acting like I
was inviting the Bloods and the cripsoverfor Brunswick one with Paul Trows, because
the communities are like, I don'twant to get all spiritual and the spiritual
people are you making fun of us? But it's the same brain laughter and
meditation. And I think with thewhole rapture adjacent times we're living in,
(12:07):
we need a great way to uplift. But with I just feel like it's
what did my friends say? He'slike, oh, I get at the
comedies like the loop for the spiritualstuff, and it does it just either
it gets you out of your ownhead or people hear about my life and
feel much better about theirs. Idon't know why it works. And then
I started doing like you know,a la affirmations, like things like you
(12:28):
know, I'm so wealthy, I'mwearing food of the Illuminati, underwear and
you know, like my skin's assmooth as jazz. And then now I'm
doing vision pop boards, which Ihadn't done art since literally high school.
So my art teacher, mister Olsenand I, who are Facebook friends,
is very thrilled I started doing visionpop boards and I'll you know, that's
(12:50):
where if you send me a coupleof pictures you like of yourself, I
put you in the center and everything, you know, things you want to
manifest, and then you put originalpiece of art. You can use it
as your wallpaper for your phone,so you're looking at it all the time.
Oh so people can just go toyour website and order something like that,
well pop mark probably hit me upon Instagram or they can go to
(13:11):
the website. But those are thoseare pretty recent, so they're not on
the website just right now. Yeah, I saw one of your posts,
so I was looking at the boardand I'm like, so you draw those?
I do? Yeah, girlfriend, you do it all. And you
have a tarot deck coming out thisyear, yes, Taro Grigio. So
it's a comedic tarot deck. Likeinstead of the Hangman, I have the
(13:33):
well hung Man, so the Magician, I have the fluid druid, so
it's all the thing. No,I only have two skills. It's just
really arts and fine arts. That'sit. I'm really honestly, I'm completely
useless in any other area like thishas to work. Oh if you were
good at math, it would beso sad because I like all these parts
(13:54):
of you. Well, thank you, thank you. They're my only Yeah,
no, I yeah, it's it'svery extreme at least, they're just
that's it. Really. That's whyI did the chuckle and chill because I'm
like, well, I do voicework and I can write and do comedy
with my spelled sex adjacent operator voice, but anything else takes me forty five
(14:15):
minutes to work a microwave. It'sreally you don't have people for this.
Oh my gosh. I can't waitto imagine me with people. I really
would be. But I love thatchuckle and chill and how you came across
that. It's there is no accident. It was just the time was right
and you were open to it.So there's so many times we have that
(14:39):
opportunity and don't have the brain toaccept it and go with it. That's
the improv way is to step forwardand go. I don't know, but
let's see. Let's see what happens. You do that on the daily,
and it provides so much excellent contentbecause when you laugh, you release indorphins
and serotonin, your blood pressure goesdown to float right into a meditative state.
(15:01):
Brilliant. It's like, that's theultimate. I love that so much.
Well, I just went through mylike I'm someone who you know,
I'm always I'm pretty hyper. Ishake like a Chua on meth after a
couple of five hour energy drinks. And so and my mom had always been
into meditation, and I know howamazing meditation can be, but it's hard
for me to settle down. Andthen when I'm just alone with my thoughts
(15:24):
and demons, I'm like, oh, now you know, it's just me
rocking back and forth naked with mustardspeared on my face like a filippitor and
a warm ball of Hennessy. SoI found though, if I was laughing,
and you you know, just justlike doing yoga or working out,
you exhaust yourself like a toddler.I'm a I'm a collicky adult, and
(15:46):
then I would more easily go intoit. So I just thought maybe it
would help some others, and apparentlythey can get into a relaxation, and
you know, they get into thatstate a lot faster. And it just
combines the two things, two ofthe things I most passionate about. Now,
if I can work if we canget some goats in there or something,
and we work animals into the lackof attraction, boom, It's the
(16:06):
three way I've dreamed of, wellpotty trained goats. Let's make them potty
trained. Because that I still don'tget goat yoga. I don't get it
because no, I'm a big yogi, but I have not done the goat.
Yeah, it's just having a sentient, adorable being on you. I've
done puppy yoga. Oh nice,Yeah, well, downward dog. I
(16:30):
guess it makes sense exactly. Youknow, we have something else in common,
which is I have posted a fewthings in the shower, and you
have posted from the bathtub with strategicallyplaced bubbles. How do you get your
camp? Do you have a cameracrew? How do you get the turn
it on? Get in get thebubbles strategically? Do you have a bubblesuit?
(16:53):
I have all these questions. Let'stalk about your bath You're thinking I
might have a bubble butler and Iwin and his name his name would be
Caven Dish and he would bring mewarm kittens instead of moist tallettes. He
would I need run your microwave foryou. Yes, someone should. Yeah,
that one was shot with a fabulousproducer Penny Edmondston and a great animator
(17:18):
who was our director, Tom Moser, both FB pals and so yeah,
yeah that you need a crew becauseyou know there's a camera angles and and
it's also we're in a really reallyjaky moto in the valley. Yeah,
people are watching camera crews. What'dyou say? I'm sorry, I have
(17:41):
a Motel six bath tub. Itwould show everything you hold up to shoot.
Please don't run the luminax lights inhere? What are those called the
crime scene things? Exactly that Iwould be on like lonely fans where it's
just me like yay. So well, you said you've got a kid's book
(18:02):
coming out. That was a surprise. I found out that you have a
book that you I think it waswas it twenty twenty that you have angels,
vampires and douchebags? Which is itwas actually twenty ten? Oh?
Was it okay? Twenty ten?Yes? And it's a three part book
or in sections. Yes it is. Yeah, it's uh. I'm big
(18:23):
on threes. I guess the ruleof comedy right as a take girl own
yees. So it's uh. Insteadof being a self help book, it's
another's help book. It's how tonavigate every because you've got in your life
angels, vampires, and douchebags. You know, the wonderful people, the
people suck your energy, and thed bags and we're all a combination of
all three. So you just wantto lean into the angels. And again,
(18:47):
that was my first See that wasmy sort of my og my origin
story of combining comedy with wellness orself help. Hmmm. I love that
well, I think. And that'son Amazon and good Reads right, yes,
it's on those And now I havejoined speaking of three ways, Yes
(19:08):
we are. I recently joined apodcast just to be more like you everyone
should be. Obviously you're my Shiro. But there's a couple Jimmy McCammon and
Grace Faye McCammon. He's a wonderfultech dude. He's our producer. She's
(19:29):
a fabulous jazz singer, and theyhave a podcast called l a AF and
I was a guest in December andthen they asked if I would join as
a full time host. So that'sbeen fun and it's pop culture, it's
snark so you know the other stuffI really like, and Grace is into
all the new age things. Youknow, we're going to have a Psychic
(19:52):
Gone this week, so that's somethingthat it's on three days a week,
and you know, wherever you findyour podcast Spotify, you're hosting three days
a week. That's a lot.Well, I'm on two of the three.
Yeah, we change up, butyeah, so because you know,
consistency, you got to pull upput out the content. So yeah,
(20:12):
I'm on I'm on two out ofthe three of LAF So I'd love people
to check that out because we're workinghard on pushing those out and we've had
some fabulous guests and you know, just people have been asking me to join
podcasts for a long time, butthe chemistry was just there, and sometimes
it works, yes, between chemistryand timing and looking at it's the right
(20:32):
fit. Because yes, you cannotsay sure to everything. You just can't.
You won't be good at it.No, No, you can say
yes, and but you can't staysure yes, and but yeah, yes
and except for yes and yes andis more of a feeling than a dead
(20:53):
like all the end. And Ihave to explain that to my husband all
the time. No, I'm kidding, he's just so cute. But you
have been on laugh Factory. Tellme about some of the other shows that
you've been on. All the clubshere, you know, in La and
I go to t K's and Dallasquite a bit. Dallas loves me due
(21:14):
to my hair because they think I'mcoming back to the motherland. Play Park
City, Utah, of course, all over Canada and also in some very
like I'm one of those people.I do a whole bit like I just
do comedy and weird places, andso then I feel like a comedy trophy
wife whenever I'm in an actual theatera comedy club, that like, that's
(21:37):
easy. It's just like, pleasegive me a challenge. Because there's a
burlesque show and I assumed i'd beopening, and no, I had to
go up halfway through the show afterthree women were grinding wearing like less material
than Dan Cook's act. And Ihad this friend. He was adorable.
He's like, Carla, Now makesure you stand in the light. So
(21:59):
then I'm like, who gives acrap to hear comedy right now? Like
I just and they were lovely,Thank god. I just got up and
said, I don't want me tobe here either. That's when I started
bringing out Sue Flay Sue Place startwhere I'm like, all right, I'm
gonna bring Sue play to that show. At least she's more in keeping with
it. I've done shows at ahospice. I'm like, oh, we're
all dying this afternoon, Like there'sjust a lot of places where maybe a
(22:23):
comedian shouldn't be. And then thenI make jokes about it afterwards, like
it dojo. So yeah again,Basically, wherever somebody needs some funny,
I will show up and yeah, are you like booked? Every week?
I try to be, you know, sometimes it's busier than others, but
and if not, you're a coupleof places here just to work out new
(22:47):
stuff, especially when a big show'scoming up, Like I had a big
showcase last week at the Ice Housewith a producer from Broadway said he,
you know, if he liked whathe saw, he would do do my
comedy special. And so you know, then you want to make sure you're
on fire for that one and soand I really and I just genuinely love
(23:07):
doing it. And you have comedyspecials out, don't you everyone in Canada?
But I the comedy special that Ithat I was booked to do was
May of twenty twenty, and itjust got pushed back so many times that
one of the companies went under gota divorce. And so this is where
(23:27):
this new fellow's come in. AndI'm like, look, I don't know
what I'm trying to trust the universe, but honest to God, like at
some point I'd really like to dothis. Yeah, so now on mission
to and so I'm just starting upwith a new team and hopefully get that
taped in the very near future.Well I totally see you on something like
(23:48):
Live with Regis, but you know, just the bouncy sidekick that can hould
up the other person who gets tobe just the regular person saying the stuff
and then you get to be thethe color and the commentary and everything like
that. So kind of commentator.Yeah, I like that absolutely, Oh
my gosh. And I met Regis. He was love, he was terrific
(24:12):
yea, And he kept saying howtall I was, and I said,
reach, I'm worth the clumb. That was it for Regis? So you
said you're worth the climb? Yes, I think the line from Happy Days.
I don't know about that, butyes, I'm not sure if that's
(24:34):
an original. But I'm also boggeddown by facts, Lisa, So I
mean, I'm happy to take creditfor it. So where can people find
you? Then? If they wantto come out and see something you're doing,
You're You're kind of all over theplace, So we'll just have to
watch on Facebook or Instagram and seewhere you're headed. I think, Yeah,
Instagram's a great place to find me. It's at Carla Collins comedian All
(24:57):
Sea Words but the nice kind atl a AF podcast and Carlacollins dot com
or Coomedic Meditation dot com. Ohnice. Yeah, so they can they
can go to those websites too,And you know, we're just uh a
comedy store, the liquor store. You know, it depends where. Yes,
(25:18):
yes, all the stores. Ohmy gosh, that's fantastic. But
I'm I also want to say,it is April. It is It is
humor month, and it is alsothe month of your birth. It is,
Yes, Is that how Humor Monthcame to be. I'm guessing it
must be obviously again, like isit the birth like Carla Marie Collins.
(25:45):
Yeah, I'm on the last dayin April, which is income tax day
in Canada, so not really thatsexy. Most people are just like I
hate this, like y so,but you can certainly balance it out for
everyone. Again a color commentary. They'll be like, oh damn, I
had to see my accountant. ButI'll just go to Carla's page and cheer
(26:06):
up, so it works out.But yeah, I'm you know, as
you know, I'm a rescue Caucasianmixed so we don't really want my age.
We can only go by the Vetsdental records. Woman, you are
just fantastic. I love you.I love you too. I'm so glad
we finally got to talk. Weshould get an RV and tour. Oh
(26:27):
yes, I'm getting her gassed upright now there, hey, and we'll
be swinging by and getting you.You bring the snack mix and I'll bring
the Shasta pop perfect just you,me and munch. Yes, just three
bitches in an RV. That's allyou need, really beautiful. And that
(26:48):
is the sequel to three men anda baby. It's three bitches in an
RV. That's it's just it's greatto Amazon Prime, though it didn't get
a theatrical release. Sadly, besosOh, we are now accepting sponsors.
Thank you. Oh well, beforeI let you escape from this from my
grip, I need to know ifyou have a dare or a prank story
(27:12):
that you can share with me whenyou've done or had done to you,
or one of those fantastic tales weshare around the campfire. A couple of
things. I don't want to leaveyou, so oh, I can talk
to you for hours, your fabuloushost, I love you, And yeah,
well I kind of have a prankyear about I love pranks. I
(27:36):
think I've mentioned that I'm basically afourteen year old boy. Happens to many
things. But first year University ofUniversity at Western Ontario, my roommate,
who we did be. We becamethe best of friends, but we could
not have been more opposite. Shewas clinically shy and this beautiful like She
(27:57):
ended up, you know, beingthe executive producer for Peter Mansbridge and CBC,
whereas I became a rodeo clown andI was so outgoing. It was
offensive, Like I was aggressively extroverted, Like this is such a calm version.
Just imagine me before life got me. Like I was really just knocking
(28:19):
on doors and wearing a hat likethe edge from you two. I don't
know who that is offensive? Yeah, it really so many things. So
I was very gregarious, and wewould prank each other all the time.
And also we were an all girlsfloor, so we were constantly pranking six
upper. We were eight Upper. But my favorites, I'll just give you
(28:42):
the top ones again. Heather beingvery I had a beautiful voice, and
she would sing the Rainbow Connection. So whenever often when she was in the
shower, I was stal all herclothes and just leave her with a tiny
umbrella and you would hear and shewould just be like, why are there's
so many And at Skadadle, Itook stitches because we were having crazy water
(29:06):
