(00:28):
Hey, we're welcome to this editionof stream On. I'm Jim Williams,
your host, and this is oneof the most exciting weekends of the year,
especially for people like me. I'ma college football fan, have been
all my life and it's week zero. So in less than twelve hours Toe
is going to eat leather and allacross the country, college football will be

(00:51):
underway. Now with that in mind, my guest is Senior vice president of
Marketing Jinks Joelicar from Sling. Tome, they are the college football home
for streaming video. Jinks, Iknow that you guys have really embraced college
football and football in general over theyears. You just keep getting it better

(01:11):
year in year out. Let's talkabout college football on Sling twenty twenty two.
Yeah, definitely. This is abig weekend for us. Uh you
know, uh, it's they callit week zero, but you know it's
it's go time for us. Soyou know what we are We're yeah,
we're so we're prepping really on onreally two fronts, and one is,
um, you know what we're doingto make sure we have the right offer

(01:34):
and marketing and all that for ourcustomers. You know what we have and
and so uh right now we're outthere with for our new customers that they
really want to get to know slingour half off offer, so really getting
the best of college football, thebest of the NFL when that launches in
another week, um you know, for for a price that fits the budget.

(01:57):
So important right now and and andeven as you move into the season,
we're still the lowest price offer andthe best for your wallet in terms
of you know, all of theother the other the other streaming services out
there that you can actually watch UMcollege and and NFL. So so so
that's key for us. And andyou know, as we were talking about

(02:21):
before, you know, we've alsogot the way for you to add on
um uh the the features and channelsthat are that are right for you.
So uh you know, for example, you know you cannot get a lower
price UM on red Zone uh anywherein uh in streaming. So that to

(02:43):
me is like you know, asas a fantasy football fan and somebody that's
really um uh engaged in sport, like so key for me as a fan
and and and so you know, with that kind of thing, and then
adding when you add on our collegebreath, you know, whether it's college
game there in ESPN or we talkedabout the ACC networks, the Big ten

(03:04):
networks, Longhorn Network, etc.I mean, it's a really it's a
really really compelling offering for folks tocome in. Well, I took the
liberty of checking in. You evertake a game or two. By the
end of the season, it's gonnabe about six hundred and fifteen or twenty

(03:25):
games on this one. So thatpretty much assures you that if you're a
football fan, you're gonna be ableto find something. Yeah, exactly,
there's something for you. And Ithink that's what's nice. Um. So
we talked with the marketing side onthe product side what's just really coming to

(03:46):
life, which is, you know, when you come to our our app,
whether it's on your ten foot,on your TV, or on your
tablet, you know, you're ableto see a personalized, customized homescreen that's
right for you. And I'll showyou, you know, all the content
you watch, uh, what's recommendedfor you, and then all the games
if you're a sports fan, allthe games you watch, and and all

(04:10):
and all the the games that aregoing to be on So really great of
you there and then and then we'rewatching this year that we trialed um in
March Madness, is is a sportsscore um ven that really allows you to
see what the other games are,see the scores going on. And then
if you you know, have thatuh package or you have that add on

(04:32):
from you know, be at ACBig ten, whatever, you can actually
click in there and start to watch. So it's um So it's pretty great,
uhition, well innovative, you know, with with how you package things
going. You know, as yousaid March Madness, what you've done with

(04:54):
the Olympic situations. You've always beenvery fan friendly when it comes to sports.
Yeah, I mean I would saywe're all fans here in the office,
that's for sure, whether you're talkingto us on the marketing side,
whether you're talking to the product guysor OPS team, the customer experienced team,
the depth like all around the organizationor fans um and you know,

(05:18):
I know we're talking sports, butI'll say we're fans of TV. So
you know, we we love innovatingin the space and we love you know,
all kinds of content sports and otherwise. So you're going to see that
innovation and you know, product featureset roll out, you know, as
we moved through Q four into twentytwenty three. You know, one of

(05:41):
the things about and we brought itup a little earlier, but one of
the things that is so important incollege football is is the fact that you
want to be you know, trueto the conference, right if you're graduate
of the Big Ten, if you'regraduate well you know SEC acc Act twelve.

(06:03):
You know, doesn't matter. Everybodywants to watch games that are meaningful
to them and to their alma monitors. And I think we were talking about
that a few minutes ago. That'sreally what coused football is all about.
College football is about tradition. It'sabout something you might have been done with

(06:28):
your family where you go to atailgate and you see, you know,
grandfathers and grandmothers going in one direction. The parents couldn't the other than the
kids. Said it for the studentsection all, you know, on game
day. And I think that that'ssomething that one of the things that I've
kind of promoted last year on theTampa Bay Buccaneers pregame show, wish to

(06:50):
take you know, your takesling withyou and literally watching on your tablet on
your phone while you're getting ready forthe game and I think the portability of
the content, whether college or forpro is um, is always important because
you know you can't always be nearthat, you know, flat screen TV

(07:14):
on Saturday. You sometimes are intransit or as I said, all your
way of the game. Yeah,I think you make Jim, you make
such a great point, especially asyou know we're coming out of a couple
of years of being in the house, you know, twenty four seven,
we're seeing we're seeing that in theway people watch and in the way people

(07:35):
consume and and uh so that ideathat you have you can watch it on
your like I said, you canwatch it on your TV, you can
watch it on your tablet, youcan watch on your phone. All the
features and games and and quite frankly, where you are in the game is
all one uh cohesive experience that youcould take with you. Is so key

(08:00):
for for us at SLAIN, butalso for the fan base. And like
I said, we're fans, soyou know, we're we're there, We're
getting ready for the game, we'rewatching the pregame show, we're going out,
we're with our with our families,we're getting together with with with our
friends and families. We're watching thegame. We're well then to kick it
onto a ten foot from mobile andsay, hey, this is where we

(08:22):
left it off the game, let'skeep watching it. So you're absolutely right,
and we see that, you know, uh, not only in how
people consume sports, but just likehow people consume television in general, and
we want to be right there withthem. Uh. And I can say,
well, I mean one of theobviously, um, there's a lot
of l standing streaming services, butone of the things that sports and news,

(08:48):
you know, that's the only appointmenttelevision left. Um, you know,
every other time it's primetime is whenyou ride and side, we're gonna
sit down and we're gonna watch it. So jinks. From that standpoint,
I think the ability for Sling toto kind of dominate that space bokay his
appointment TV. I need to watchit, uh and it's still meaningful is

(09:13):
critical. And I think that's where, um, you know, the rubber
meets the road from what you guyshave done with what you're both from a
technological standpoint as well as a programmingcontent standpoint. Yeah, that's exactly right.
And that's a conversation we have, you know every day here at Slang

(09:35):
and and I'll say you hit itexactly right, which is the product uh.
And the team here has done anamazing job of of of getting to
a place where you know, we'rethe we're the number one uh in reliability
from a live streaming perspective, um, both across live and on demand.

(09:56):
And and uh uh what we've thenh thought about then is on the product
side, we've done that. Onthe programming side, You're right, we've
got the right channels, we've gotthe right ways to for a customer to
watch and the right content to watch. And then on the marketing side,
we talk about how do how dowe then keep it affordable? Right,
especially in this economy. What we'reseeing now, it is like, as

(10:20):
fans of TV, it is soimportant for us to go to market with
the best price in sports and news. And you know that is that's our
that's our model, That's what wetalk about every day. How do we
get that out in the marketplace? But new customers understand but also reinforce that

(10:41):
to our existing customers, right thatthere's no better way to watch sports and
news, but also there's no moreaffordable way because you know, right now
we're at so important Yeah, it's, um one of the things that you
were just talking about this a fewminutes, you know, one of the

(11:01):
things I like to do. AndI'm sure I'm not the only person on
the planets it does. It ismaybe you're watching on a Sunday, you're
watching your favorite team or whatever network. I always have on my phone red
Zone from Sling, and I'll bewatching Red Zone so that i can see
what's going on while I'm also watchingthe game. And so you get this,

(11:26):
you know, the second screen. You know, I started this podcast
four years ago, in two hundredand twenty five podcasts later, I can't
tell you how much has changed. It's just amazing. And now the second
screen, which used to be somethingthat you know, was thought of as
either a luxury or who in theheck is gonna watch that or whatever,

(11:50):
the second screen has become almost normal. It's almost a third screen you said
you're wondering about, But yeah, second screen has become huge. And with
the amount of content you guys have, um, you know, you can
be watched in one game, butat the same time, you know,
you can have that other game onyour phone and kind of glance over there

(12:13):
from time to time. And ifit, if you feel compelled, you
can bounce from the PAC twelve networkover the Big ten network and check out
that game that you'll you know, maybe your team is having a good day
and winning by twenty points, soyou can be all right, let me
sneak over and catch a little bitof this other game. And again it's
right there at you're in your pocketthat you know you're hitting the nail on

(12:37):
the head especially and I talked aboutabout fantasy football. Junkie said that I'm
with you on the red zone front. But but that we see that in
the way people watch, but wesee that us in the way we watch
as fans. Right, you're gonnayou're gonna have something up on on the
on the ten foot. You're alwaysgonna be you know, our fathers are
a part of our lives now forbetter for us. Like be on there,

(13:00):
you're gonna be looking up stats. You're gonna be looking up scores.
You know you're watching movies. You'regonna be looking up who's in that movie?
Right? What else? And whydo I tell you? Right?
Right? So you know what we'rethinking about with the product team. Um
here it's sling is you know howthose interactions all married together, and uh,

(13:20):
we can't give away too much.I'm really excited with the work uh
that that's going on in that frontand excited to share uh what's going on
with that and you know, inthe coming quarters. But but I'd say,
at least for football itself, theidea of um, hey, look
we're gonna have sports scorers, we'regonna have the ability then, um to

(13:41):
to to get into red zone followyour fantasy team while you're following um the
you know, your team at homeon the ten foot is just you know,
it's awesome and you know, I'mgetting excited for for two weeks just
thinking about it. Well, yeah, talk get it from a professional point.
M past two seasons, I've beenthe host of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

(14:05):
pregame show, and I always havered Zone up because I can look over
off the monitor and say to folks, Okay, well here's what's going on.
So and so is about to drivebecause um, the Bucks have been
having for twenty five games and soyou know, scores come in as you

(14:28):
go along, and it's, um, it's not only good for the fans,
it's actually good. You know,I'm Bason to guess that there's probably
more than one or two of meout there, who are you know,
tuned in for a broadcast at endpointto watch it as well. Yeah,
that's right. And and and withthe league getting really exciting this season,

(14:50):
you know, we're hearing down.We got Russell Wilson and uh, you
know, a lot of I'm aI'm a Philly guy, so uh,
you know, excited to see whatwhat what what Jalen hurts in the new
weapons AJ Brown's going to bring tothe to the to the team. You
know that what it allows you dois be in one place, but watch
from all places, right, youknow. And and I think you've seen

(15:13):
a lot and you've seen a lotof that, right and you know we're
you know, if you look atthe MAC review right, like a lot
of movement. You know, uh, I gat this is is an economic
podcast, so we'll we'll we won'tget too deeper. But you see a
lot of movement. You see peoplemoving from various parts of the country to
another. They want to stay connectedwith their hometown, they want to stay
connected with the things they love, the sports they love, the content they

(15:35):
love. And that's where you know, from our perspective and slayings as TV
fans, as sports fans, that'swhat we're exactly trying to do. So
that's why we're trying to give youknow, breadth of content. Um.
Uh, whether it's red zone orback to college so the college uh divisions,
Um, but give them that breathof content, give them access.

(15:58):
So whether it's mobile or ten foottablet, et cetera. You you you
have that ability, and uh,it's all fun from a college football standpoint
to and pro football standpoint too.To really just get there and uh and
uh have fun with it. Okay, I'm gonna out e jings. Um,

(16:21):
you're a you're a fan. Youhave the favorite college football team?
Uh, My favorite college football teamis the University of Pittsburgh pitt because that's
where I went. My father graduatedfrom pitt So I have a special place
in my heart for the Panthers overthere. And uh it's uh it's gonna

(16:41):
be fun. Um. Are youa Steelers fan then or you so?
I so? Hey, I wasborn and raised in Philly, So I'm
I'm an I believe Green, I'ma and three through through. But you
know, um, Eagles fly.But I got I gotta say, if
there's an AFC game and Steelers areon, I'm gonna I'm gonna roof for

(17:02):
my Steelers. Haven't lived in thatcity, but but but you know,
it was an interesting time when Iwas there because it was the time when
the Eagles were going to the tothe Super Bowl versus the Patriots, and
and so the Eagles won the NFCChampionship and the Steelers lost to the Patriots
in the AFC Championship. So thatwas an interesting time to be there and
be an Eagles fan. I'll tellyou, I uh, you know,

(17:23):
I kept, I kept. Ikept at home that night, let me
just put it that way, andcelebrated myself. You came very you came
very close to have me the TurnpikeSuper Bowls at point. I know,
I know, I'm I'm still holdingout hope. I still think you know,
um Kenny Kenny Picketts now on onthe Steelers and pick Guy and pit.

(17:44):
I think they've got a They've gotsome good uh running way uh in
front of them. Mike Comms, great coach, and you know so,
and we got got some really greatweapons. And Sirianni on the Eagle side
is is uh, you know, first year doing things. So let's see
what happens in year two. Okay, Jake's um, we've come to the
point of the program where it's shamelessplugged. That's my term, not your

(18:08):
um. Go ahead tell me inthe folks out there, oh why they
need to be over at Sling startingas soon as bonsity. Yeah, so
thanks Jim when we talked about it, right, Sling is the streaming product
