My guest is Josette Simon, who is part of an all-star cast in the Britbox original mini-series Crossfire. The show is about a group of friends who go on an island holiday that goes wrong when a group of revengeful gunmen takes a hotel hostage and guests are forced to make monumental life-or-death decisions with enormous consequences. An intricately woven story of trauma and resilience, guilt and betrayal, Crossfire is an edge-of-your-seat, sophisticated thriller with an emotional, intimate, and relatable core.

A magnificent cast includes Keeley Hawes, Josette Simon, and Lee Ingleby and it is well worth binging.

(00:28):
Everyone, Welcome to this edition ofstream On. I'm Jim Williams, your
host. Now. This week britBox dropped a brand new original one that
you're going to want to watch.I can assure you that it's called Crossfire
Now. Crossfire is a high stakes, thrilling drama about a vacation that's gone

(00:49):
wrong when a group of revengeful gunmentake a luxury hotel hostage and the guests
are force to make monumental life ordeath decisions with enormous consequences. This intrically
woven story is of drama and resilience, guilt and betrayal. Crossfire is an

(01:11):
edge of your seat sophisticated thriller withan emotional, intimate and relatable core.
Now. This Brickbox original series waspenned by Apple Tree Yard author Louise Dougherty
and its stars. Our guest who'spart of an outstanding ensemble cast, Joe
set Simon, who plays doctor MiriamAdderton, a woman who's thrown into action

(01:37):
trying to save the life of ayoung restaurant worker while chaos reigns supreme around
her and all of her friends. You know, Joe Set, I gotta
say that the term edge of yourseat. I mean, you know,
sometimes it's thrown around quite frequently andit doesn't live up to hype. In

(01:57):
this case, I gotta say crossfireas an edge of your seat, it
lives up the all that it reallydoes. It really does. Yeah,
I mean I remember when I whenthe script I was way filming and I
came home and the scripts had beencarried over to me because I like to
have hard copies, and it wasquite late, and I thought, well,

(02:20):
I read episode one and then tomorrowmorning I beat the next two.
And I was sitting still sitting onmy sofa hours later because I you couldn't
stop turning the pages. Absolutely, you just desperate need to know what happened
next. I read all three inone go. I'm not quite sure who

(02:42):
books your holidays, but I wouldn'tgo back to that booking agency again.
And it wasn't their fault, wasit. Really? It could happened,
Yes, I guess you can't reallyblame them for it could happen anywhere.
Unfortunately, that's the situation. Now. You play a doctor, Riam,

(03:04):
and that your your skills are putto use pretty early in the in the
process. Um is that when allthat was coming about. There's got to
be as an actor. I wouldimagine some some Okay, I've got to

(03:24):
do number where I've got to playa doctor, but not really give having
your normal tools about you. You'reyou were having to, as we say
here in the States mcgeiver your waythrough it by coming up with different little
things to help out and triage yourway through it. It had to be
a very interesting aspect from that asthe area of acting. Oh yeah,

(03:49):
absolutely, yeah. I had tolearn how to do that incredibly complex operation.
Um, it's now something I canput to good use if anyone ever
wants to be to performing. Therewas a medic who taught me exactly how
to do that procedure, um,which is it's quite complicated, but obviously,

(04:14):
like with anything, you know, you need to you need to know
what it has to be correct.Even if one medic was watching and could
do that, um, you know, you'd be doing it for them and
I myself, I'm very thorough aboutthings being absolutely as they should be.
So yeah, I was. Iwas taught and that's that operating technique.

(04:43):
Yeah, which was extraordinary. Man, I loved it. I absolutely loved
it. Yeah, it's you know, one of the there's so many wonderful
story you know, lines throughout Prosfire. But I think that what makes it
interesting of the many things it doesmake it interesting is that there's a weaving

(05:06):
from going from each storyline to theother storyline, and you kind of like
you get a little backstory as youmove forward. And that's not an easy
thing to do both, I assumeas an actor as well as someone who
writes the script, can you giveus a little feeling from your standpoint of
how things kind of moved both forwardand backwards as you were telling the story,

(05:30):
but then also you know, kindof filling in the backstories you moved
along. Well, yes, there'sYou're absolutely right. I happen to be
an actor who always does a backstorywith any character. I always try to
think really deeply about what the backstorymight be, so that wherever we come

(05:51):
to with whatever character it is inthe present, I have some feeling of
what's gone before. So that's somethingI do anyway, So that part of
it, you know, is somethingI love doing. I mean, in
terms of going forward, Yes,that had to be something that came out

(06:12):
of deeply immersing yourself in the characterso that you were trying to respond,
you know, as truthfully as youcould in the way Miriam would respond,
and then again, you know, trusting how how you felt she would be
afterwards going forward. So, youknow, the backstory thing something I was

(06:39):
there, But then you had toreally really mind your character so that you
could really imaginatively feel everything that thecharacter goes through. You know. One
of the things that was also interestingto me, unfortunately is that, um,

(07:02):
and I'm not going to tell anythingout of school here, that you're
the situation has to do with youknow, terrorists being in the you know
where you are. Unfortunately, that'sthat's a situation that we all faced at
this time, and it's a bitof a scary thing, but it is

(07:23):
unfortunately a real world problem. Yeah. Absolutely, I don't think it's a
spoiler to say that that. Well, now, actually maybe it wasn't.
They're not quite they're not particularly terroristsbut in this story, but you're absolutely
right that the scenario is something thatwe've become all too familiar with and it's

(07:44):
absolutely terrified. And I think oneof the things about this story is that
many people have gone on holidays likethis to a lesson all great degree.
You know, it's absorb and there'sa pool and some lounge doesn't reading or
having a dream, and the kidsare swimming and someone coffee bolding just ordinary.
You can all imagine ourselves on holidayin this scenario in some way.

(08:09):
And so this is what's yeah, even more terrifying because there are all kinds
of instances, whether you're on thesubway or whether you're in it at the
venue or whatever, where unimaginable happens. The unimaginable happens, and you have
no idea what you would do,and you think about this story is it

(08:30):
kind of begs the question to yourself, what would I do if this happened?
And it's not a question you canreally answer. You might hope that
you'd be brave and altruistic, orthat you might, you know, behave
in a way that's that's admirable, whatever, or just run for your life
when or tripping over somebody who's youdon't you know, the point is you

(08:54):
don't none of us know what wewould do. Now, absolutely true,
Um, you have an outstanding ensemblecast, so it's with you. Uh,
it must be also fun to beable to play off of such great
actors and actresses. Yeah, it'salways fun to playoff great acts and actress.
It's that's, Um, that's somethingthat you you know, you wish

(09:16):
for, you hope for, andit's it's it's always fantastic when it happens.
So yeah, we were, wewere all. Yeah, we're all
pretty close, respected each other, hugely, worked well, really really well
together and that's that's that's just fantastic. Yeah, I love it. What

(09:37):
are some of the things that youthought as an actor that it as you
said, you read the script, you were on the edge of seat with
it. You really you know whichwe said, bench read it. What
are some of the things that drawdrew you to playing Merriam? Well,
No, I might be biased inthis, but I but I actually think

(10:03):
that Miriam is the bravest one inthis. Actually I think that's fair.
Yeah, because she's you know,she's she's GP, she's she's got a
very solid marriage. You know,I think they're met. The marriage between
her and her husband are the isthe strongest as well. She's fun,

(10:24):
she's warm, kind, she's agreat GP, she's an amazing friend.
She's somebody would want on your side. Um, but even she would not
know in a situation like this whatshe would do. And what happens with
her is that she finds resources reallydeep inside herself, um in a way

(10:46):
that you know, you never shecouldn't have imagined. Really, So,
not only does she perform that incrediblycomplex operation in a in a terrifying setting,
but she's very aware of how othersare feeling. She asks around about
perhaps people's well being. She digsreally really deep into herself. And I

(11:09):
just found her an extraordinary person, you know, full stop, but then
an extraordinary person in that extraordinary situation. And yeah, she clearly was the
coolest and calmest of the bunch.Well, I don't think she was actually

(11:30):
cool or calm, to be honestwith you, I think that. Yeah,
I think she was as terrified aseverybody else, but she overrode it
for the greater good, which Ithink is an amazing, amazing thing to
do. Yeah, I mean, she was absolutely shaken witless with fear,

(11:54):
but still managed to focus on otherpeople. So it wasn't it wasn't because
of an absence fear or terror. It was finding something greater too still push
herself forward to try to help otherpeople. So really to dig deep into

(12:22):
yourself and say, Okay, I'mI'm as afraid as everybody else, but
you know that's not going to helpme right now. I need to get
this done. Yeah exactly, Yeah, not rationally or you know that consciousness
because you know, because absolutely atthe base of everything that she does,
she is absolutely as terrified as everybodyelse that those people going to be storming

(12:48):
through that door and shoot to allof them. That's that's always present,
always as present. You can hearthem outside the door. Um, you
know, you hear shalts. Youknow, at every second you feel you
could lose your life, you couldlose so in the midst of that,

(13:09):
to find the resources to tend tothis seriously injured young woman is absolutely remarkable.
Special thanks to our guest Joe setSimon, the star of the brick
Box original series Crossfire, which isnow playing on brick Box. Be sure

one hundred and eighty thousand of USacross the globe towards a digital future with
connected experiences and over the air updates. It can change the rouge yet again,

(14:13):
helping write the next chapter of Americanmanufacturing. It can change the way
we build forever, creating state ofthe art zero waste to landfill facilities that
change communities and regions along the way. It can change how Americans, how
the world feels about electric builds. It can change who we think drives a

(14:39):
truck, who drives an EB,who drives a ford. It's a lot
for one truck to do, butthis thing's just getting started. Turn it
on and it will change how youthink about driving, about towing, hauling,
about powering a camp site or awork site. It's the only EV

(15:03):
that's f one fifty's the only EVbuilt for JUP, the only EV smart
