(00:00):
This is the FCB Radio Network.Welcome to Take two with your host Alexis
Nutt. Today's guest is Ashley Callingsfrom Fox Sports in Sports Time, Ohio.

(00:22):
Say two, We'll be right backwith more. Take two. This
is Jessica Lavish with the Outlaws. We know that racism still exists in our
country, but what about slavery.Human trafficking, a form of modern day
slavery, is where people profit fromthe control and exploitation of others by means
of force, fraud, and corrosion. Tragically, no country, community,

(00:46):
or individual is immune from the vastinjustice. Human trafficking is driven by demand.
Instead of contributing to the problem,we can be part of the solution.
If we eliminate the demand, weeliminate human trafficking. For more information,
follow hashtag demand No More. Welcomeback to take to my guest today

(01:15):
from Box Sports in Sports Time,Ohio, Ashley Colors. You can find
her on Drenning Live Monday through Thursdayat four thirty pm. Ashley, how
are you. I'm doing well? How are you? I am doing great?
So I just work. Can youtell the guests a little bit about
yourself before I get started? Oh? Sure. I have been with Sports

(01:37):
tim Ohio now and it will beactually ten years in May, so I've
been there for a very long time, seems like forever. Love all of
it, UM, Fox Sports recentlyhead Box Sports tim Ohio. So we're
all under one roof. Now.We have a new building right downtown and
Public Square. And yeah, wework very closely with all the sports teams

(02:01):
here in Cleveland. And that's reallyin my life sports fo. All you're
doing need to know is is that. And you know I'm there every day
and following all the teams very closelyand loving every minute of it. Um.
I went to Kent State actually umCollege and local girls, so born

(02:22):
and raised here and that's about it. Yeah, ten years, so like
forever. But that's what I've beendoing and enjoying all of it, that's
for sure. That's great. I'mhappy that you enjoy what you do because
it's like not a job exactly. It's It's funny because that's what everyone says
to me. You know, they'rewatching the games and they think, oh,

(02:43):
you just consider what they do that. I'm like, no, we
do have to do some work, you know, we do. We like
to follow the teams. They liketo watch everything, but a lot goes
in to it behind the scenes aswell obviously. But yeah, I can't
complain at all. I'm happy.I'm happy for you. My first question
is going to be what got youinto sports? Okay, So this is

(03:06):
a funny story actually because I wentto Kent State for marketing so many of
that through alcohol and actually decided orthought I decided and I wanted to do
some type of sales or event coordinatingwhatnot. So I had worked at a
golf course out east and was theevent plann or coordinator there right out of

(03:30):
college. And so while I wasdoing that throughout the summer, actually our
director of programming at the time onSports two Ohio wasn't over there. He
had said they were um finding anew they had a new position that was
opening, which would be to doupdates within all bets are off called this
time Accordinan and Live. So itwas kind of a hey, do you

(03:52):
want to you know, come inand try it out and we'll teach you
and we'll learn together. And Isaid okay, and I had there ever
since. So it was a lotof learning obviously, as you could imagine,
not having any TV backgrounds starting fromKent State, and then I really
just learned everything from the ground up. I mean, the guys were great

(04:15):
that I had worked with. Theytaught me, you know, on camera
stuff, but behind the scenes, they taught me how to edit everything.
I would edit my own you know, packages and features and highlights that would
go into all the updates and whatnot. So from there, just kind of
expanding roles throughout and learning a lotof the production side of things as well

(04:36):
as on camera, and everything kindof just grew from there. So it's
kind of funny how I got intoit, but it's like, I can't
see any different way of life nownow that I've done that. So,
yeah, there aren't many women insports broadcasting. Tell us about your experience
being one of the few women inour business. Yeah, it's I like

(04:59):
it. It's great. I thinkmore people are getting into it, and
it's a lot of work. Youknow, you are working mostly with males,
and I think people tend to thinkthat that's why because males know more
about sports because they would play playwith sports. But you know, it's
just it's a growing business and youhave to put a lot of work and

(05:19):
to be able, you know, for people to take you seriously, which
is a big thing. I think. You know, a lot of people
can say, oh, you havea pretty girl working on the sidelines or
something like that. I mean,so many of the women in this business
just put in so much work andthey're dedicated to it. And I think
you just have to have that outlookand and always be working towards something else

(05:41):
and something bigger while you're doing whatyou do. And the women that I
know in this industry I'm very goodfriends with and have become very close with,
and I mean, they absolutely loveit, and I love being a
part of a little small group likethat, you know, and I think
you need to get to a pointwhere you know, people can risk you're
going to be in the clubhouses withall the guys and not hardly any other

(06:03):
women around. So I think it'sa good thing. And I think breaking
barriers of you know, people thinkinga certain persona of you if you're a
woman in sports. So I thinkyou know it is it's just a lot
of hard work, but in theend, it all pays off, you
know, getting towards the end goal. I understand. I understand. I

(06:24):
agree too, can you tell ussome of that hard work that you have
to put in so we can know, because I'm pretty sure it's some more
women out there that's like, what'swhat do I have to do to become
a sports you know, broadcaster?Like they actually want to know? So
can you tell us to some ofthat hard work that you have to put
in? So, yeah, it'svery hard hard to just seet into.

(06:45):
I mean there's a lot of peoplethat study and want to do it.
So you know, there's a tonof people wanting to get in this and
you really have to have a littlebit of luck as well as I did
with falling into the position you knowthat I did. There's so many people
that want to do it, soyou have to just really know what you're
doing at all times. You haveto be prepared at every step in every

(07:11):
second that you're going to be talkingabout it. And I know it's a
little more generalized. It's what Ido because on our show Dread and Live
we talk all sports, you know. I know some people have specialized things
like Allie Clichon with the Cats. You know, she works just with the
Cats, that's what she does, come in in season out and even the
offseason. But yeah, I meaneverything just being prepared from waking up first

(07:34):
thing in the morning and whether I'mgoing to yoga in the car I have,
you know, talk radio or listeningto that, and watching ESPN or
Fox and watching all of the gamesand knowing and checking Twitter and new seeds
and whatnot. So it's really justyou have to be prepared at all times
because you never know what could comeup or what could be past to view,

(07:57):
and you definitely want to be readyif something else is asked of you
in the industry, you know,to do a different job or to fill
in for someone, let's say.So there's a lot behind the scenes and
all the guys I work with tooon the pre and post games for Indians,
let's say, you know, they'realways in there and checking stats and

(08:18):
watching things and working very closely withthe producer. So a lot goes into
what you see finished product wise oncamera. Nice Nice. Um My next
question, has there any has thereever been any wild moments on your show?

(08:39):
Oh? Man, Um, Well, yeah, I think it's just
it's live television, so things canhappen. Of course. M Bruce Drennan's
the host, so he actually takesphone calls during the show, so that
gets a little more wild. Hejust takes those calls. So, but
I mean, it's it's live.So as I'm sitting there and you know

(09:03):
something, let's say it comes throughabout Johnny Manzel. Of course, there's
always something going on with family, you know. It's just reacting to that
right away and kind of just goingby by your emotions. I don't really
necessarily have one wild moment that ina bad way, I guess, but
it's just always again, you know, so things happen, people are tweeting,

(09:26):
you know how Ecko so um,obviously the best part so far and
when I've had and this is justwild and crazy because of what it was
was the CAB's winning, of course. And I was actually for Game seven
on top of the Greenhouse tavern onthe fourth and myself, Yeah, so

(09:50):
we were up there during the gameand watching and it was packed up there,
of course, and you know, right when the moment that we won,
we tried to go live and I'myou know, however, many screaming
fans behind me and trying to geton camera and um, and the signal
isn't working, of course, Sothose things like exact yes, to go

(10:11):
through and but but it's it's thatwas the best moment. I'd have to
say. They also, I'm sureyou would ask us to count. But
yeah, the parade day, Iwas right in the middle of everything and
to get from where I needed tobe, I actually walked the entire parade
route with the guys, which isbadly hard, over a million people downtown,

(10:33):
which was yet trying to get fromProgressive Fields, which is where started
over there by the queue and ProgressiveField and ending over you know by City
Halliday stay over there. Just tryingto get through. That was the only
way. So, I mean,I never will forget that that day,
that that moment when they won,and then going to the parade and um,
and you asked about hard work andpreparation. That planning and prepping for

(10:58):
the parade day because they had noidea what's going to happen was one of,
you know, a thing of beautybehind the scenes, because it had
to be everybody in place and workingtowards that one goal of getting the coming
air and carrying the entire parades fromstart to finish, and we were alive
the entire time. I wouldn't knowhow it was during that prey, Me

(11:18):
and my boyfriend went down to thePrey. Oh my gosh, trying to
get through those people was crazy. And then we were in Pennsylvania at a
concert when the cast won the game. All you know is at the end
of the concert, my mom,my aunt, my grandmother, my grandfather,
everyone's calling me, oh my god, the casts one, the cast
one. I know. Yes,since we're talking about the cast, and

(11:41):
since we're talking sports and you dosports, can you tell us do you
think the cast will repeat this year? Yes? I do. I think
that. I mean, I justwas that media day so Cavs meaning a
day, you know, they're allthere and listening and talking with players,
and it was a really good messageI think that they had that they all

(12:03):
aren't really right now reflecting on thatCavs championship because you know, going with
a championship and winning in the waythat they did, it cut that summer
so short and they're off season,so it was almost like they immediately were
back at the network, and evenLebron saying, you know, until my
career is over, that's really whenI would reflecting on what happened. But

(12:24):
he finitely have to get ready nowfor this season. And of course the
question was, okay, Golden State, you know, adding KG now it's
going to be a huge acquisition.Do you thing immediately that they're a favorite
sin And it's of course they're alwaysa good team and they're going to continue
to be a good team. AndI say the Cavs have just a good

(12:46):
chance as they do, you knowstupid, I mean, at least on
those do something no one thought thatcould happen and come back from a three
one deficit. So I think thatis the way that they worked and the
team that they had and the waythey interact with each other, and some
pieces that they've added. I thinkthey have a very good shot of repeating
that and defending it. And Iknow that they're ready to get back to

(13:07):
work, you know, starting withworkouts that they conjected themselves, you know,
throughout the summer. So yeah,I yes, I do. I
hope that they do. I thinkit would be amazing. But I think
they have a great shot to doit again. Okay, now before I
go to my next topic, Ihad a question about the cast. So
my last question of the cast. So, my friends have been talking about

(13:28):
how some of some of the castplayers are leaving. Is that true.
I've not heard any of that,so I don't know if yeah, I
mean yes, I don't know.I have not heard that. Again,
I was at media day, butI've heard from everyone around and we're ready

(13:50):
for this season. I think thatLebron James is an amazing leader, an
amazing guy to playlists, and Ithink these guys are happy and you know,
they want to do again, andthey saw what it thinks to the
city when something like that happens, and I think they were very, very
happy to be a part of allof time. Okay, thank you for
answering that question. Now, nexttopic, are the Indians going to the

(14:13):
World Series? In your opinion?Do you think? So? I have
to believe it, because yes,I covered them. I think this group
and I just talked about this todayand we listened to manager Terry francona talk
earlier today and he said the oneword that he uses to describe this team
is resilient. And I think that'sa perfect word. We saw so many

(14:35):
injuries from this team that they hadto get over and it was like a
different guy all the time, somethingthat they had, you know, to
get over. The hurdle and theyjust kept coming through. I mean their
walk off when night after night,a different guy stepping up each of those
nights, just shows there's not onetrue superstar on the team, you know

(14:56):
when you look at the position players, and I think that to be able
to get to this far and toyou know, have home field, and
to clinch the division and to beatup on the Detroit Tigers like they did
all seasons, it says so muchabout how this team is made up,
how it to manage, how theirclubhouse is and so I think, yeah,
I mean, and you think aboutit, if you know, the

(15:18):
Rangers lose in their series, wethen would have home field for the Championship
series and then with the americanly winningthe All Star Game, then for the
World Series. So I think it'sa great opportunity for the Indians right now,
and I think there's a year it'sgoing to happen. I think that
this can be the year. Ithink something just click, something motivated them,

(15:39):
which I think has a lot todo with the Cavs championship and they
look at that and then they wantto be a part of that too,
and this team is just it's somethingdifferent I think it resilient again is a
great way, and I think thatthey're going to keep pushing through and I
really hope that that they can makeit there. Okay, so since we're
talking about AWE even sports teams. The Monsters won their championship, the caz

(16:03):
won their championship, the Indians areon their way to their World Series.
Let's talk about the Browns. Doyou think the Browns will win a game
this year? A game? Well, yes, I will give them a
game. How about more than onegame? Yeah, I could maybe give
them two maybe. I mean,I think we're gonna see, you know,

(16:27):
hopefully Corey Coleman get back. AndI think that the way that coach
Hugh Jackson is coaching without all ofthese people, and he has just been
handed like one blow after another,I feel bad. I go to Burrier
every Monday after a loss and it'sone more injury and one more bad call
and one more guy getting suspended whatever. So I think that what he's been

(16:48):
able to do and their record couldbe definitely different right now. You know,
they they could have won a coupleof those games already. So I
know we're we're owing four now,but I think they're don't matter what your
record is now. But looking backand I think that they very cold could
have easily won a couple of thosegames. So I do think that they
can get there. I'm not goingto say this week against Tom Brady coming

(17:11):
back and the Patriots, but yenever or not like that. I think
that I think that they can pullout a win or two. And I
think that coach Jackson just figuring himout and unfortunately he's just been ens some
bad hand. But hoping some ofthese guys come back from injury. I
know that Josh Town wants to getback out there. He's a gamer,

(17:32):
and I coachy Cussler has been doingfine. I think we thought he was
just going to be termed to theWolves and you know, awful rookie,
but he has had poise under center. He goes in there, he leaves
these guys and they cannot say enoughabout his work ethics. So I think
we are putting it in the wooklike he does, and he's learning on
the fly, just like all theyoung rookies. And yeah, I'm going

(17:56):
to give him a game, maybetwo, so you can all reach that.
We'll see. I'm a Browns fanI'm not even gonna lie. I
am a Browns fan as bad asthey lose sometimes, but it's that's my
team. But can you let everyoneknow how to get in touch with you
via social media? Please? Yes? I am on Twitter daily so you

(18:18):
can follow me at Ash Collins umson of people are going to step through
there for social media every day actuallyon our show Trunning Live, so we
have heout questions of the day soall the fans can chime in and you
know, give us your opinion onall things we went forwards. I'm also
on Facebook under Ash to Collins soand on Instagram Aash Collns twelve, so

(18:41):
all kinds of stuff, but yeah, mostly um, we use our Twitter
and Facebook for the show. Um. So yeah, if any fans wants
to chime in, we love hearingfrom the fans and what they think about
what's going on. Okay, andmy last and final question, is there
any advice you have for anybody thatwants to be in your too. Yes,

(19:03):
it is. It's hard to do, it's hard to get into.
So if you do make it andare you know in the field, I
think you have to have very thickskin. You have to be able to
put your head down and work andreally put in the work to do it,
because it just pays off so much. And you can tell a difference

(19:25):
and someone that really really works hardand really wants to get to know the
business as opposed to someone you know, who just goes through the steps and
tries to get there. So Ijust think that's all about it. I
think that's how life is too.So yeah, if you really just can
get lucky enough to get in thebusiness once you are, I think you
just really have to work your buttoff and I think that will pay off

(19:47):
for you in the long line.Okay, and I just want to say
thank you very much for coming ontomy show, Ashley. I really enjoyed
the walking to you. Thank youfor having me. I appreciate it.
