(00:01):
It was about two weeks ago whenI was messaging with Taylor and I said,
Hey, why don't we go finallyget around to doing series two of
Dino Writers for the show. Andhe said that's great, I'll get to
work on some research, and Isaid I will do the same. I
went back to listen to the oldshow, the first show we had done,
(00:24):
thinking it had only been a yearor two ago. Come to find
out, the show was published intwo thousand and sixteen, which, if
you're keeping track, was seven yearsago. I don't remember it being that
long ago, but apparently it was. I'll be interested to hear what Taylor
thinks about it, since time hasno meaning to him anyway. At any
(00:46):
rate, we're here today to talkabout series two of this very cool toy
line, which I already revealed whatit was at the beginning. But that
toy line is Dino Writers, andwe're talking series two. That is why
I'm here talking toys. Welcome toTalking Toys with Taylor and Jeff, where
(01:21):
we go back in time to discussour favorite toys, one toy line at
a time. Yeah. Hello, when wel there two Talking Toys with Taylor
and Jeff I'm Taylor, and I'mJeff and Taylor, has it really been
(01:45):
seven years since we talked about DinoWriters. You know, it's weird because
it seems like it was not necessarilyyesterday, but it's only what twenty eighteen
now, so no, it's it'stwenty twenty three, Taylor. What.
Yeah, you know, it's weirdbecause I have not a a bit.
Yeah, I guess it has beenabout seven years. It's it's interesting because
(02:07):
the only thing that's been on theradar for Diner Writers in the most recent
years was about three years back,Mattel was going to try to get the
license and do a diner writer's run, so they do a small, like
little Keshy style diner writer set,you know that everyone was, you know,
(02:29):
trying to get ended up getting iton Amazon reviewing it, and it
was just it's just very blase, you know, like no one's really tried
to bring this line back to life. And the only people I could think
of at this point that would doit would be like then the Cell Company,
But their most recent thing, besidesfor Roboforce and Sectars, it's been
biker Mice from Mars. So I'mpretty sure they're kind of busy. It
(02:54):
is, and it was twenty sixteen. Do you know why. I'm thinking
it was more recently because last yearwe did Extreme Dinosaurs. Yeah, and
that's when I saw this. Iwas I was complating the two. That
makes sense. So that's why.So those of you that have been waiting
patiently for this, uh, you'rewelcome, We're back. Well, you
(03:15):
know, it's it's also funny becauseyou know, we're talking about extreme dinosaurs.
This has a I think there's acouple of figures from this line that
have a runover with um Catalex anddinosaurs, which was also a Tycho run
as well. I always thought thatthey were connected. Are they not,
like officially connected, They're not officiallyconnected. No, it's um so the
(03:39):
Diner Writer's line. So one ofthe things that made Diner Diner Writers so
cool was the fact that the dinosaurswere supposed to be too scale and two
m to fact of what the dinosaurswere supposed to be so much to the
fact that Tycho had been hired bythe Smithsonian to do a whole dinosaur line
(04:03):
there where they used a lot ofthe same parts. They just they renamed
the dinosaurs to kind of more correctlylike reflect the new genus names that were
out, and so like you know, the Smithsonian had these dinosaurs and I
think they were like casted darker thanthe diner Writer toys and then callecs and
(04:27):
dinosaurs. They use some of themDinah Writer dinosaurs for their dinosaurs. But
then you know, they had anew figure set in vehicles and everything else,
and it's that's one of those thatwe need to talk about one day.
Um. There's not a very bigline, but it's got such an
interesting story to it that's kind ofkind of cool. Um. But yeah,
(04:50):
it's we've seen these dinosaurs being usedin multiple times, but Writers was
the part where they made the biggestbang for their buck on these molds,
and then after that they just kindof died off. Because there is a
third series, and I haven't lookedenough ahead to know if if it's big
(05:13):
enough to warrant a full show, but we'll we'll we'll at least revisit it
some time in the next eight years. And yeah, it's fairly small and
it doesn't deal quite so much withdinosaurs as it does like the ice age
stuff. Okay, Yeah, whichalso I think some of that becomes a
part of the Smithsonian Dinosaur Run aswell. Okay, yeah, so for
(05:36):
those that haven't listened to the showin the last seven years, can you
remind us give us a rundown ofthe premise of the line before we jump
into this one. Yeah. Sothis was a Tycho run toy set,
and what it was is that formost of the figures, you got a
dinosaur, either a small, medium, or large dinosaur, and you had
(05:57):
a like a crew member with itwith some sort of harness or weaponry,
and each dinosaur had like a harnessor weapon that was specific to them.
So you had two casts of characters. You had the evil Rulins, who
were mutants that use brain boxes tocontrol their dinosaurs, so all their dinosaurs
would have some sort of snap onlike piece that would go onto their head.
(06:21):
And then you had the peaceful Valorians, which were a human race that
would speak to their dinosaurs through likea little box thing that they would that
the humans would wear on their chest. Every figure was about two and a
half inches, so they were, you know, not too big but size
of mask figures, a little bitbigger than mask, a little bit bulk
(06:44):
here, but they they had prettynice detailing, kind of cartoony. They
had seven points of articulations. Hehad knees, hips, shoulders, and
head. Most of it was justa basic swivel er hinge and a lot
of the parts were reused, soyou had like hands and torsos that were
reused amongst either the Rulans or theValerians, depending on what sect you were
(07:08):
getting. So there's not like alot of renewed parts except for when you
get the dinosaurs, and then youget the weapons that go to the dinosaurs
because they were specific to those dinosaurs. Right, yep, Okay, it's
a it's a cool series if youever get around to watching it, And
I believe you could find them allon YouTube right now. I think they
(07:28):
are. I think they are allon YouTube. Yeah, So, just
to give folks a kind of arundown of what we have in this line
and full disclosure, folks, theone of the sites that we use a
lot, Toy archive dot com, will not pull up on my laptop because
apparently it's not secure enough SOLU onNew Toy Archives, So I'm flipping between
my computer and my tablet. Soin series two, we had of the
(07:53):
Dino writers or the Valorians as youcall them. We had the Brontosaurus that
came with ion, Serena, andace. We had Stegosaurus with vega and
tank. We had the Pachycephalosaurus withtack. And I would just like to
take a moment and for everyone tojust stand in awe the fact that I
said that right the first time.I'm very surprised. Hey, you can
(08:13):
say impressed, but not surprised. You say you're surprised. That's even it
more insulting. Okay, I'm veryimpressed. Now too bad, too late,
the damage is already done. Wehad the Torosaurus with Gunner and magnus.
We had the Struthiomimus with nimbus, the Demetrodon with shadow, the Edmontonia
with axis, and the Protoceratops withcannon. And then for the rulins,
(08:37):
we had the Silophus with locus andtrap, the plus Areus with skate,
and the Kintrasaurus with croc. Yes, so do you do you have any
of these or did you have anyof these at the time? No?
The only one that I had Ihad the Chintrasaurus. Now the Contrasaurus.
It was weird. Wave two nevershowed up where I was growing up,
(09:01):
Like I remember getting a lot ofthe Wave ones and the Wave one stuff
like that was that, you know, not the second hand shots, but
the the shops that you wouldn't thinkwould have toys, second run shops.
Yeah, where where they? Yeah? And so you know series two I
never I never got though. Idid end up finding just the Kintra sours
(09:24):
um at like a resell shop, and I think it was like it wasn't
a bag of stuff and it waslike five dollars this whole bag. I'm
like, whoa, that's crazy.I was like, that's I was like,
you know from the Armed Spikes oreverything, that's the Kintra source.
It's like, and I believe thisis the one from the from the series
two of Diner Writers. And soyou know, I get it. I
(09:46):
go home and I check it lookingon. This is back when like phones
were not smart, so you couldget on the internet and I look it
up. I'm like, wow, that's actually the Diner Writers run. Hang
on, hang on, hang on. I need to interrupt you right there.
He said, this was back whenphones weren't smart, folks. I'd
just like to remind you as lateas twenty thirteen, Taylor was still using
a pink Razor flip fund, sothis could have been last week for all
(10:11):
we know. Well, okay,so I don't even remember when this was.
It was I was I was backin North Texas, so it was
after two thousand and five, andthe iPhone came out in two thousand eight
or nine, I believe. Soanyway, Carrie, this was a while
back, and so I was.I was kind of excited because I got
(10:33):
this country source. And for years, I mean years, I would go
on to all my places to findparts and parts and pieces and figures for
this wave. There was one shieldthat I was looking for. It was
a harness and it had like thelittle seat and shield and it was going
(10:54):
for like two hundred and seventy fivedollars. There is no way I would
ever be able to put this together. Side ended up selling it and I
made about fifty bucks off of it. Okay, good, yeah, yeah,
you head it at one point, but you don't have it today.
Yeah. Well, and again,it wasn't a complete set. It was
(11:16):
just the dinosaur. Okay, Soyeah, that's not kind of rare some
of these are, right wow.Yeah, Okay, Well, let's talk
a little bit about Series two.It has what I think maybe the two
crown jewels of the line, ortwo of the dinosaurs that could be considered
the crown jewels to me, thefirst one being the Brontosaurus, which I
believe is the biggest one in theline. Yes, because Brontosaurus was the
(11:39):
biggest dinosaur as far as we know. Okay, so here's where I've got
to interject my dinosaur knowledge, Okay, please do so. The Brontosaurus,
the Brontosaurus that's from this series istechnically not the Brontosaurs to what we think
(12:00):
of we we didn't actually get theBrontosaurus, the true uh brontosaurus, actually
together as one full fossil until twentyand fifteen when it was identified as a
true Brounosurce. Forever, what wewhat doctor marsh thought was a Brontosaurus was
actually um Apotosaurus that had a wasit a camerasaurus's head on it that he
(12:26):
had found that he thought was aBrontosaurus skull, and come to find out
that it was not wrong, well, and that it was wrong, that
it was wrong. Well, sowhat we thought of as a Brontosaurus from
you know, the nineteen o fouron up until I think it was like
two thousand and I think it waswas that ninety three or like somewhere between
(12:50):
ninety three and two thousand and one. Um, it got changed from the
Brontosaurus over into theo I do rememberthat. But then we found in twenty
fifteen when they went back and startedchecking, as an potosaurus gets older part
of the Diplocti genus of dinosaurs, what happens is that their backbones fused more
(13:13):
together, and they started to realizethat there were species that they thought were
a Potosaurus that don't. And sothat's how they were able to say that,
hey, these are actually different species, and they were able to bring
the Brontosaurus name back and it wasn'tthe initial fossil that doctor marsh had found.
It was basically a different one.I think the key on this is
(13:37):
that what we're seeing that's supposed tobe a Brontosaurus because the species are a
little bit different. They look similarbecause they're both similar sauropods, but they
are different species. What we're seeingon the box aren't supposed to be an
a potosaurus, but it's called abronosaurs. Well, because at the time
we knew it as as a bronsbronosource. Okay, so that's that's it
(14:00):
for Dinosaur Corner with Taylor. You'recutting me off from you on out,
Yes I am. That's that's thelast of the deep dives. We'll doing
the dinosaurs. We're here to talkabout the toys, not about the the
faulty science and everything. Well,I'm sure you do. Um. It's
sort of a Pluto scenario, orPluto wasn't a planet than it was a
(14:20):
planet, than it was and nowit is again who knows. But the
toy, the bronosaurs toy, whichis what we're here to talk about,
I might remind you, is oneof the only ones I believe that actually
has a cockpit on it. Right, most of them have like a saddle
or something for them, but it'sopen. This is one that's closed,
actually has a cockpit that's closed.I think I think the Diplodocus had a
cockpit on it. It might have. Again, it's been so long since
(14:43):
we talked about it. But thisone is cool because you get three figures.
He comes with three smaller flying dinosaurs, and he's got guns on his
legs as well. So I justthink this one is really really neat.
It's it's sort of the the USSflag of the line. I think it's
pretty cool. Um, it's it'sdefinitely uh, it's definitely one of those
(15:07):
that like looking at all the extrapieces of parts, like it's huge.
It's a huge setup and it's it. Um it's thirty four inches across and
like fifteen inches tall, So thisthing is gigantic. Yeah. I don't
even want to know what one ofthese is going for on the on the
secondary market, but yeah, it'sgot this. It's got a platform that
(15:30):
sits on top of it, andwe've got a cockpit with that has a
closing canopy on it, with allsorts of guns all over it. It's
really really cool and some of theI think they even shoot a couple of
these missiles actually shoot things out.And it's just a really good looking dinosaur.
We talked the last time about howthese dinosaurs look really good. Yeah,
So at the Bronosaurus. Then wehad the Stagasaurus, which I always
(15:52):
liked because he's got he's got liketwo buckets on either side of him that
two people can can can ride on. He's got like two gunner stations,
and that one was an important oneto have because that was the one that
we would seem a few times inthe series, like in the cartoon,
and we didn't get it until thatsecond series, which was, like I
(16:15):
think, a fan favorite for alot of people and folks. We're not
gonna do it. We're not goingto talk a whole lot about the figures,
the action figures, because let's behonest, that's not the main draw
for these guys. There were therewere some action figure two packs that were
sold in this series. We're justworried about the dinosaurs. Yeah, but
the but the dinosaur being used,so like um, I believe all the
way up into like the first thefirst take Home movie that was like a
(16:38):
VHS movie, they had the stegosaurusaround, they were hurting it. And
then in the second movie he wasa prominent key feature. He was the
creature who took down the Tyrannosaurus Rexwhen Krulos the Crulon came in and was
trying to destroy their camp. Thestegosaurus is the one that that knocked off
(17:00):
the harness and made the t Rexrun. So he was kind of a
key figure in this series, andso it was really nice to have him
that second series. Yeah, hewas a hero. I'll tell you what
I don't like about this figure though. The armor that they got on him
goes over his the plates stand upand so it almost sort of obscures him
a little bit. And I don'tlike that because that's how you recognize the
(17:22):
stegasaurus. I could see that, yeah, I could see that, but
yeah, but but it looked cool. It's like, you know, that's
nice, you know, polished silverplastic that we have and everything, and
the guns are all red, andthen there's there's a gun on one side
and the other side I think hasa gun, but it looks like it's
more of like an observation bucket thatwe had there. And then that go
ahead. I was gonna say, yes, but there's also like the red
(17:45):
missiles on it as well. Yes, yeah, that swivel and and again
the dinosaurs all look really cool. There's there's nice texturing on him. We
talked about this last time. Theyhaven't I don't know that they've necessarily improved
on the sculptus or anything, butthey've certainly not gonna step back, right.
I feel like they kind of knockedit out of the park with that
first line. So this is justmore of the same greatness, which is
(18:07):
never a bad thing. And thenext we have the you said, if
I can say it right again, the packy cephalosaurus, Yes, or you
could just call him Packi's And nowthat's a that that's an ethnic slur for
a certain group of people, andI don't I don't want to use that
term. Oh oh, I didn'teven think about that, right, you
(18:29):
know me, I'm the politically correctof the two of us. Um,
But I love I love this dinosaurbecause this looks kind of like a duck
bill platypus crossed with like a likea like a mouse of some sort.
There's a there's an animal I'm tryingto think of. I don't think it's
a womb. Maybe it's a wombatthat I'm thinking of. That he kind
of looks like with it with likea like a fifth helmet, like a
(18:51):
World War One helmet on his head. I could see that, and I
figured you'd love this one because hekind of has kind of looks like kind
of a purple hue to him alittle bit. Yeah, it's kind of
a it's almost like a purplish, like maroon brown sort of tone. Um,
what's cool about the Packelecephalosaurus was thefact that it has like ten inches
(19:11):
a bone on its head. Andwhen they sculptured this down, they've got
that what they referred to as themonkhead down beautifully with the crown of like
horns and scales around it, youknow, and it looks really nice.
And I love the fact that theywith the design of the cartoon, they
kept true to how they were designingthis and the armor that goes on it
(19:34):
in order to really reflect what wewere seeing in the cartoon and what we're
getting in the toy. And it'sit looks the part of the Packelecephalosaurus that
it's an obvious, obvious like moldof that dinosaur. Yeah, it looks
really good. I like it alot. And he's got The thing that's
(19:56):
funny to me is the way thatthey've they've painted his feet in his hands,
it looks like he's wearing black bootsand black gloves. I could see
that. It's kind of adorable.This is It's what's interesting because I've I've
pulled these up also on Transformer Landas I'm looking at him, and unlike
the series one where we had Seriesone, he had all the weapons that
(20:19):
were on like a tree and everyonegot basically the same weapons. This time,
we're getting a lot of different weaponpieces. So like this character has
you know, he has his voicebox, he has an armor plate that
fits on him. He has that'sanother like latch piece that's supposed to hold
(20:40):
stuff. He has a drill thatsnaps his hand, and a camera and
these are like different things that we'venever gotten before, which I think is
kind of cool that they're switching itup and giving us new items to use.
Yeah, they've tailored it to thespecific dinosaur. It's really cool.
Well and also for the humans. For the humans too. Yeah. Yeah.
(21:00):
The thing I like that's cool aboutthis one is it reminds me kind
of the of the Bwing Fighter fromthe Kenner Star Wars line. The saddle
is fixed so that as you walkthe dinosaur, the saddle stays upright and
like stays in place. Yes,he's always facing forward, regardless of what
of what the position the dinosaur isin. So if he's down about to
head butt somebody, the guy isstill up facing forward. I think that's
(21:22):
a really cool design. Oh yeah, well, and it makes sense again
they're trying, you know, oneof the things that they were doing is
making sure that with the dinosaurs theyhad certain things that were correct, because
they were also trying to find like, you know, the right like skin
tone textures, things like that.So knowing that this dinosaur would align it's
(21:47):
back and neck in a straight formto crash into things, so to have
that harness move to basically pay homageto that scientific fact of what they knew
about it. It's shows that Tychoreally liked dinosaurs and wanted to give us
something that was more than just peoplewriting on dinosaurs that had some actual fact
(22:07):
to it, right. They putsome thought into it. Yeah. One,
and you could see that like withthe stack cards and stuff that came
with the packaging, they would havethings about the dinosaurs in there, which
I loved. Yeah. No,it's very cool. They did it,
did a good job, and thiswas one of Tycho's crowning achievements. The
next one I wanted to talk aboutis the Taurussaurus, which is kind of
a cousin of the Triceratops. Yes, this one is the other one that
(22:33):
I would say maybe the crown jewelof the line, because this one has
a light up feature and he actuallyI believe he's battery operated in walks.
Yes, so yeah, this onelooks like if you've ever watched the TV
show Dinosaurs, folks, you rememberhis boss. It was voiced by Sherman
Helmsley. Sheremon Hemsley is what thisguy looks like. And the thing I
(22:55):
love about this one especially not onlydoes the dinosaur look good and it walks
and everything, but his the armorthat he's got on him pops open like
a shell, like a like anonion, like a blooming onion, and
reveals these two huge cannons underneath it. They can shoot cannons. Yeah,
this one is really cool. Andagain he's got two room to carry two
figures on the back as well. This is one of those where I remember
(23:18):
having the the vhsas the Diner Writers. That's one of those I'd been looking
forever for the for my videotapes ofthem, and during the second wave cartoon
um they would have like the DinerWriter theme song and they would have the
Diner Writers and this was always theone that came off at the very end
(23:41):
where they're like, you know,Gunner, let's fire it, and the
shell would open up and the twolittle lighted cannons would quote unquote fire go
pew, and you would see theharness get knocked off the t Rex it
would run off, and I'm like, I gotta have that. I remember
those commercials with this being so special, epic and it and remembering of how
(24:03):
I would go and look for thisthing wherever I could and never could find
it. But man, does itlook great completely put together with all of
its stuff? It does? It? Does? This one? This one's
in the running for one of myfavorites in the line. This is a
really cool toy. Do we haveany idea why this is the only one
that they gave that battery operated feature, the walking action and light up and
(24:26):
everything. They didn't the Tristerratops withhammerhead from the first line, and so
did t Rex. T Rex alsowalked, so it'd be the Toro source
Tristerratops t Rex. I think theit's either the Diplodocus or it is the
(24:47):
brauno source. That might be theBraunosaurus. I don't think the brontosaurus were
walks. If it did, Ifeel like they would have mentioned it in
the research that I did. Yeah, I think the Brontosaurus is probably too
big as it was yeah, itwould have been the the Diplodocus, but
there were a few others that alsowas Okay, so I just this mightst
be the only one in this lineand this this series is wave. Yeah,
(25:11):
it's just the bigger the dinosaur, the one those are the ones that
usually has this sort of battery operatedthing. Okay, Well, speaking of
the bigger dinosaurs, the next oneI want to talk about is a smaller
one, the struthy mimus. I'msaying that right. He kind of looks
like a like a nicer version ofa velociraptor to me. I think it's
supposed to be almost like is itthe gallu mimas, which is like the
(25:33):
chicken mimic but bigger, So it'sI think it's more like a like just
a running dinosaur. Okay, yeah, the one that comes from Nimbus.
Yeah, it comes to Nimbus. And the goofy thing about this The reason
I wanted to talk about this oneis this got maybe the goofiest feature of
all of them on his side. He's got a little tubular cylindrical thing.
(26:00):
It pops open and you can puta note in it to send across the
battlefield to your other dino writers togive them a message, but it would
apparently be a human size message, like like the size of the kid playing
with it. Yeah, I couldsee like myself probably packing like rifles and
stuff in it instead. That wouldmake more sense to me. You know,
(26:22):
here's the thing, Like I couldsee this being the messenger of the
group. But they have boxes wherethey're able to mentally talk to dinosaurs.
They're from the future where they hadtime displacement, where they were able to,
you know, go back in timeto the dinosaurs. Why in the
(26:42):
world would they be writing paper messagesand having run it from one end of
the battlefield to the other when they'vegot probably communicators and laser guns. That
that makes no sense. Yeah,I don't get it either. It was
I think they were kind of reachingthere, which is why I love it
because it's just goofy. Yeah,it's very goofy. The demetro Dona is
(27:04):
one I don't care to spend awhole lot of time on unless you do
this just kind of a goofy lookingHe's got a big fin on his back
and then they cover the fin upwith the armor, and I just don't
like that they're covering up too muchof the dinosaur. For me. This
is one of those that I searchedand search and search for one of these
when I was a kid. Ofyou did this one played a really prominent
(27:26):
part in the series, and itwas one of those I really really wanted.
And I happen to like this dinosauractually a lot. M I was
looking for the drastic world version ofit, like the tax set, and
I still need to get one becauseI don't have one for my shelf,
but M this is I happen toreally like this one, and I think
(27:48):
the plea feature aspect of it's actuallya pretty cool because it on the thin
side where it has the cover,it's got cannons that pop out and you
can you can battle that way becausethese are supposed to be a part of
the commandos Um. Interestingly enough, the Demetrodon is not actually a dinosaur um.
(28:10):
One of the things that Tycho didnot get correct in this is that
they did not put out dinosaurs thatwould have all appeared at the same time
um, which most of the dinosaursthey have came from Late Cretaceous. So
you know, that's why you havelike Tricera tops. Okay, Taylor,
I'm gonna I'm gonna stop you rightthere. I'm gonna stop you right there.
(28:33):
Yes, dinosaurs also did not existat the same time as human beings.
Well no, but they know there'sno but there's no butt. You
can't say one is okay and complainabout the other moving on. But they
went they went back in time.Okay. So so you're okay with the
time travel, but you're not okaywith him getting the science wrong. Okay,
(28:55):
got it? Okay? Well, okay, so do you know why
the demetrian you do? It's notactually considered a dinosaur. I do not,
But I bet you're going to tellme whether I want you to or
not. Okay, well, letme tell you whether whether you want me
to or not. The demetro donactually came before the age of dinosaurs.
It was one of the first largelizards or thunder lizards to come out,
(29:18):
but it preceded all the other dinosaurs. Came out during Precambian instead of during
the the Triassic Age, so itpredated all the other dinosaurs. It doesn't
have the same necessarily bone structure asa lot of the other dinosaurs. It
reflects more of a lizard but itis one of the oldest known fossils,
(29:40):
but it's also predates dinosaurs from theactual dinosaur age. So Taylor, if
if, if you if this isso out of whack with and I'd a
step with the rest of the line, Why did you want one so bad?
Because I still like this of course, Okay, particular creature, you
know, pseudo dinosaurs, and Ithink it's because of the lore of it
(30:03):
being a dinosaur. But I justI really like him. I think he's
cool. I loved his addition inthe new Jurassic World movie too, even
though I didn't really like the JurassicWorld movie quite so much. I will
never tire of hearing you say youdidn't like a movie that was actually not
good. I know. Well it'ssame with like I didn't like to ob
One series either. Well, ofcourse you didn't. It was adult dramatic
(30:26):
storytelling. Um, it's really not. So let's talk about the Kintrasaurus,
since we're here to talk about toysand not your your bad takes on on
entertainment. This is the one thatyou had, And I'm a little confused
about the Kintrasaurus. I've never heardof this one. So this one looks
like this is one of the oneof the the bad guys mounts. And
(30:47):
the thing I like about this isall of the armor for it is like
purple hues, hues of like shadesof purple. So it looks like almost
like a transformer, like a Decepticon. Yes. Um, well, a
lot of the rule on work had, you know, the kind of like
dark magenta purple, and like theslate gray sort of pieces to it,
so it carries that on it.Just I think what I like about the
(31:11):
armor work on this is that thethat they use the purple or that dark
magenta as a frame and then allthe weapons were done and that slate gray
with that harsh, harsh red likemissiles or laser tips, and it looks
just it looks mean like it's allsharp angles, and it's it's you know,
(31:33):
exposed vents and exposed you know, bolts and hard lines, and it
just it looks tough. I digthis one a lot. Okay, this
is one I really want to puttogether, right, and you you had
the dinosaur itself, but nothing else. I went with it, right,
right, okay, right, Andand again it's yeah, it's it's everything
(31:53):
sort of spreads out on this andit almost makes it look like it's gotten
wings. It's it's it's a prettycool it's it's pretty sleek until you pop
the canopies open and expose all theweapons. Um. And what I've what
I've found really interesting about this oneis you've got the gunner stations on each
(32:14):
side, so you've got piloting seatson each side. But this one also,
out of all the ones we've talkedabout so far, this one also
comes with that brain box, andthe brain box the way they've got it
set up, it's spiked up soit matches the spikes that run along the
back of the head. So wherethe spikes and on the brain box is
where it runs into the first platesthat run along its head, and it
(32:38):
travels down the back. And Ilove the kind of the tough look at
this thing. No, it's itis. It's it's very cool, very
very cool. Um. The nextone we have is the Protoceratops, and
this one is fairly small, andthe Protoceratops is I guess a cousin of
(32:58):
the Triceratops, kind of like theTristeratops as a cousin of the pro protoceratops.
Yeah, so this was we wetalked about that when already. Yeah,
sorry, we talked about that whenalready. Um, the Placarius is
when I was trying to get tooSorry, they're sort of the same size.
Um. Oh, that one's verysmall. It almost looks like the
mini ray. It looks almost likea Komodo dragon to me. Oh yeah,
(33:22):
the one was skate. Yeah,it's it's very basic. What very
This reminds me a lot. Doyou remember when we talked about the Inclusaurus
with UM was staying I think, and it had like the harness with the
giant crossbow on the back. I'llsay yes because I just want to move
(33:44):
the conversation forward. This is thisreminds me a lot of that. It
is kind of it's very much thatnot an alpha or beta dinosaur. This
is, you know, the thenext wave of a dinosaur down the affordable
dinosaur. That it's basic, itdoesn't do a lot. It's got four
points of articulation, you put aharness on it, you've got a giant
(34:05):
oversized weapon. It's a sort ofbrain box. This reminds me a lot
of this one. And this isone of those I would love to have
because I I have staying in theAnkleiosaurus up like in a shadow box.
I'd love to have this one withit so you could really see that that
progression of weapon, but not reallythe progression of the toy Um. I
(34:28):
dig this one a lot. I'lltell you why. I like it because
he looks like a dog. Itlooks like a little dog. I could
see that. Yeah, and Ilike that dog. So the last one
is the Saalfus, and this isanother one. It looks to be a
fairly small, a little bigger thanthat one because somebody can actually ride on
him. But he's sort of halfwaybetween this one and like the Protoceratops.
(34:52):
Yeah, and he looks it's it'skind of a duck billed dinosaur. Yeah,
and he The thing I don't likeabout this one is he's got this
thing sticking out that like it sticksout from like his his stomach. It's
got this thing that's supposed to belike a grabber to pick stuff up off
the ground, and it just looksawkward. I don't like that at all.
(35:13):
Oh I see on the bottom ofthe harness. Yeah, that's that
was a little odd. Um.I was glad to see that the that
the Rulan still had a few ofthe figures I had traps with them,
so you could kind of compare thisone with It wasn't the Veloci raptor.
It was the dining SISIs I believefrom the first wave, which was the
(35:38):
running dinosaur that had the huge spikeson the toes, and this kind of
reminds me of that, Like it'syou know, it's a theropod dinosaur with
with a side running harness on itin a couple of weapons and a trap.
I think the writer is cool thisis the first time that we're seeing
(36:00):
his head because that it makes himvery unique. Um. And actually a
lot of the Rulans from this line, the heads are very unique for these
figures. But the dinosaur for me, just doesn't really do it. He
doesn't seem like a tough enough dinosaurto carry that harness and be a real
(36:20):
big threat. I think it's theduck bill. He looks. He looks
like a cartoon character he does,so I get that completely. Um.
So that's it for the line, folks. It's kind of a kind of
a smallish, smallish line. Butwe'll be back when you take a short
break, we'll be back to discussour top five. Yeah. Okay,
(36:52):
So, Taylor, since you actuallydid have one of these in your possession
at one point, I will letyou finish us off and I will start.
Does that sound reasonable? That soundsreasonable? Okay, And we're gonna
try to keep these short because myvoice is tired and my back is injured.
Folks, I don't know if Ihad mentioned this. I injured my
back a few weeks ago. That'swhy we haven't recorded anything a while.
(37:15):
Thankfully you didn't know, because wehad enough of a backlog. But I'm
struggling a little bit. So inthe interest of that, Taylor, please
keep your answers as succinct as possible. Okay. So my number five is
iplacarious for another reason. Then helooks like a dog. I think the
thing is adorable, even though he'sa rueline. He's one that works with
(37:37):
the bad guys. I just thinkthis guy is adorable. And to say
a dinosaur is adorable automatically gets somea spot on my top five. Nice.
Yeah, I could get behind that. Yeah. Um my number five
is the demetrodon with a shadow.I really like this dinosaur or proto dinosaur,
(38:00):
and I love the armor work.I think the armor work plating being
a little oversized does kind of takeaway from some of it, but it
still has kind of a fun featureto it. And I dig it.
Okay, that's fair, that's fair. Wonderf we're gonna have me overlap my
number four? Is he strue Themamus? And if for another reason I told
(38:23):
you, I love that there's aplace for a human sized note in his
armor. That's goofy. It makesno sense and it's ridiculous and it makes
me laugh and I love that. And this is what I could see having
on my shelf and bigging what's thatfor? Oh, that's what I can
put a note in to send tomy other figures and it would look at
me like I was you. Yeah, they'd be like, oh, okay,
(38:46):
okay. But other than that,I do I do love the design.
The dinosaur looks really cool and everything, and I think they may good
use of this one. But I'mwith you. I think it would make
more sense to have like a gunrack or something there, something a little
more a little more usable, yeah, or practical, use it as like
(39:07):
a weapon stores like right, exactly, just it seems a little off.
Um, my number four is actuallythe Placarius with skate. Now we do
have that overlap, Okay, Ilike the simplicity of this. I love
that skate figure. Again, that'sthat's one of those heads that we never
got another one of these except forin like the figure two backs, and
(39:30):
I like the simplicity of it andthat it's a lot like the one I
have on UM and shadow Box.I'd love to have this from a Shadowbox
too. Yes, I know thatwould be cool. Yeah, it would
be cool. Yeah, it'd bevery cool. Yeah, we're very cool.
So that brings us to my numberthree. And my number three is
he Torosaurus, because again, he'sso cute. I don't think I mentioned
(39:52):
this, but this this thing,I think is is just adorable and I
love that he again he kind oflooks like a dog too, but I
love that he' it's up and hehasn't walking action everything. I just think
this one is is a really reallycool toy and it's one that I could
could see myself spending a lot oftime with if I had one. Yeah,
I imagine he's probably fairly expensive onthe secondary market too. Yeah,
(40:15):
I'm I'm pretty sure. Yeah, yeah, all right, So what about
your number three? My number threeis actually the Protoceratops with cannon. This
is one of those where it's alot like the plasy source with skate.
(40:37):
It's very simplistic. It doesn't havea lot to it. But one of
the things I found unique about theharness for the Protoceratops was the fact that
the person lays down into the armoras if it was like almost like a
motorcycle. So it's like a dinosaurmotorcycle, but it's on four legs,
and that's one thing I didn't likeabout it. That's why I didn't appear
(40:59):
on my list. Ah. Ilove that design. I think it's very
cool. It just seems uncomfortable forthe writer. I could see that.
Yeah, I could see that,But no, I get that. But
that's that's a decent that's a reasonablechoice. I like that one. So
we're up to what my number two. My number two is the packy Cephalosaurus.
(41:21):
I wanted He's on my list fortwo reasons. One, I wanted
to make sure I could say it. Plus, like the Torosaurus, he's
just adorable. I like the colorand the fact that the saddle stays upright.
I think is just so cool.I love that they were able to
get that design in there and thathe his spine will lock into place to
put him into luck that ramming motion. Yeah, this one is just it's
(41:42):
just a cool looking dinosaur. Andthe toy itself, I think is just
the perfect combination of design with functionfor this guy. Yeah, I could
see that. I can say that, what about you? What is your
number two? Excuse me? Mynumber two is the stegosaurus. All the
(42:02):
way at number two, Okay, all the way at number two. This
being kind of a main character,I thought that he was. He was
really really cool. I love thefact that they added like the leg armor,
which it's it's in the show. It's it's like patches that put on
his leg in order to help controlhis legs. We can might kit things.
(42:25):
This one did have a battery boxon it, So this I think
was one of the walking dinosaurs.Um, it's just it's a really cool
design. I like it. It'skind of one of those hero figures from
the line as far as being likecool and kind of center stage for a
lot of the shows. So Ithink it's definitely one to have on a
(42:49):
shelf, and I love that strikeof the chrome against its dark skin color
too. Well, here's the funnything about that. The Stegosaurus is my
number one, and I mentioned thatI didn't like the way the armor sort
of hid the plates. Yeah, but this should tell you how much I
love the stake of Saurus. It'sone of my very favorite dinosaurs. And
I love the design of the dinosaur. So if I had one of these,
(43:10):
I would not keep the armor on. I would keep the armor off.
But I do like the fact thathe can carry two figures, one
on either side. I think theydid a really good job with the application
of it, you know, makeit. It's useful. I just wish
that they hadn't built the armor upso much that it was covering up as
plates as much as it is Icould see. But everything else you said
(43:30):
about it is great. I justI think it's a really cool looking figure.
I think it's a good looking figure. And it's it's yeah, it's
it's my number one. So I'mbetting that you're number one, maybe one
that I'm going to talk about ina minute. We'll see what is your
number one? My number one?Okay, it's not the one I'm going
(43:54):
to talk about in a minute theTorosaurus. Okay, but it's something we
had a lot of overlap. That'sinteresting. Okay, we did the tour
source. It's a it's a greatview, it really is, and that
could have very easily been my numberone. My top three were kind of
one A, one B and oneC. Yeah. That the armor on
that thing is amazing. The factthat it pops open, it's got the
(44:14):
electronic lights, it's got rotating gunturns the back like it's this is well
designed. And it comes with oneof the main characters, which is Gunner,
which, like if if you everwatched the cartoon, it's kind of
a band favor for people, rightbecause he's a grumpy old man. I
dig it a lot. It's verycool. It is very cool. So
(44:37):
that means it's time to talk aboutthe one that got away. I bet
we have the same one. Actually, yours maybe the one you had that
did get away. So mine isthe Brontosaurus. Ah, that's not what
yours is. Nope, okay,I think I know what yours is in
But the Brontosaurus, this thing looksgreat. A large scale makes the armor
(45:00):
really cool. They can do alot with it. He's got a cockpit,
and he comes with three other smallerdinosaurs, flying dinosaurs, and three
figures. Like I said, thisis kind of the the USS Defiant or
the USS flag from the G I. Joe line. This is this is
the big one to have, andI would love to have one of these
on my shelf, even though it'sthe only thing that would be able to
fit on that shelf, right becauseit's going to be the centerpiece of any
(45:24):
room you put it in. Peopleare going to come in and go.
Is that is that a bronosaurus withlasers on him? Yes? It is.
Would you like to know all aboutit? Not really? Well,
too bad, I'm going to tellyou anyway, because you're in my home,
you're a captive audience. But Ijust I love everything about this one.
And this is why I don't evenwant to go to look to find
(45:44):
out what they're selling for because I'msure it would just we just just just
make me mad. But I lovethe Bronosaurus. And again it's you know,
the the bronosaurus as we knew withthem was always one of my favorite
dinosaurs. And I always love thefact that the biggest of the dinosaur was
a vegetarian and was you know, very docile and not aggressive and everything.
(46:05):
So I just love the Bronosaurus andI love this toy. I think this
is great. I think they knockedit out of the park with this one.
That's a really good one, andthat that would be a good one
to have out of the line tokind of show off. So why is
it not on your top five? Then? I'm curious. You know,
I like it, but I theboth the Edimontonia and the Brontosaurus. Like
(46:25):
the way the armor sits up onthe body. I'm not as big of
a fan of like pop up andand separate and don't exactly like fit over
the dinog I get that that.Yeah, yeah, So for me it's
a design choice. I'm not asbig of a fan of it. Gotcha.
It's a it's a cool dinosaur,and I love the especially like with
(46:47):
the with the the idea of theBrontosaurus and the whole legacy of the name
and everything, Like, I thinkit'd be cool to have, but it's
just not my absolute favorite. Gotcha. So what is the one that got
away? I think I know whatit's going to be. Well, go
ahead and tell me, what doyou think? It is. Is it
the Candasaurus? Yes, it isokay because you did actually get away.
(47:09):
You had it and it did getaway. Yeah, I had it and
it did get away. It wasone of those that you know, I
got for just the dinosaur for fivebucks, tried to put the armor together,
tried to find the figure itself,Like the I got someone that was
offering me the figure. It waslike fifty five dollars and I was like,
(47:30):
I just can't afford it. Andit was one of those that I
really really wanted to put this onetogether. I thought it would look absolutely
amazing if I did. But Icouldn't afford this one. Um, I
had to. I had to getrid of it. I mean, it's
got a cool driver, it's gota cool dinosaur. The rule on weapons
on it are very unique to itswriter. It's a it's a cool piece.
(47:53):
It really is. And I'm sorrythat you you did have to have
to part with it, but again, you know you you made it,
made a pretty tidy profit on it. Oh yeah. I was able to
get some some other toys and stuffthat I needed. It was interesting because
there's a person I follow on Instagramcalled diner Writers nineteen eighty and they collect
(48:15):
just diner writers and they've got aton of pieces and um, and you
follow them where what it is onInstagram? It's on Instagram. Okay,
dinner Writers nineteen eighty and they havea Kintra source that is complete and it
looks amazing because it's got like thethe bottom babe panels or almost like little
hoods over the driver's seats to everything, and it's just they look great.
(48:38):
That Kintra source is really cool.I just followed so I could get get
updates and everything because I got someother cool stuff in there. He's got
the Marvel Action Universe that he posteda an ad for it. But yeah,
he's got oh yeah, he's gotsome really cool stuff. He's even
got some boxed stuff here, someinternational boxes. That's cool. I think
he had a Brontosaurus on there aswell. So yeah, diner Writers one
(49:01):
nine eight zero all one word onon Instagram, give him a follow.
This said, oh he's got foodto No, that's not him, that's
somebody else. Yes, there's ads. Yeah, the ad popped up it
was food. I was like,oh oh oh no, never mind,
sorry, Yeah, all right,Well there you have it, folks,
there's a diner Writer's wave too,So come back in slightly less than a
(49:22):
decade and maybe we'll get around toDino Writers Series three, Series three,
the last one, the last one, we might because there's not as much
in that line. That might beone to kind of pair up with the
Smithsonian release of Dinosaurs. Just talkabout the two together. That would be
a good thing to do. Yeah, we do necessarily have to do a
top five on it. We couldjust talk about that and then the Smithsonian
(49:43):
since that's something you mentioned a coupleof times and that's that's very interesting to
me. We can talk about howtheir package and the difference between the two,
and that that might be all thatwe can really do because well,
you know, yeah, that's that'sthat's that's enough. That's enough. So
there you have it, folks thatwe'd love to hear your thoughts on the
line, and if you have anyin your collection, or if you are
Dino Writers nineteen eighty and you're listening, please go to the Facebook page to
(50:05):
Facebook group and post pictures of yourcollection. We'd love to see it or
tell us where we can go tofind it. Yeah, So until next
time for talking Toys with Taylor andJeff. I'm Taylor and I'm Jeff.
Remember they're not dolls. Their actionfigure action figures right on dinosaurs, which
is kind of the coolest scene foran action figure to do right now.
Lasers, dinosaurs, time travel humans. What's not to love about this line?
(50:30):
