(00:01):
The year was nineteen ninety six anda new movie was coming out that I
was not overly excited about, butI was moderately enthused about. I was
a director that I liked. Itdidn't love, but I liked him,
and the concept was interesting. Itwas based on a series of trading cards
from the sixties. I thought, that's that's interesting and this particular director can
(00:22):
do well with that. I liketo look at the film. So I
went to see it with at thetime, my youth pastor because his wife
had something going on at the housethat he needed to be out of the
house. And we went to seeit and it was not great. Again,
the concept was sound. All ofthe performers in it were game.
(00:44):
They were there to play ball.It just didn't work. Years later I
found out that they produced toys forthis line, and lo and behold,
the toys are amazing. The toysare what I hoped the movie would be.
It will shock none of you tolearn that Taylor actually loves this movie,
(01:07):
but it should also not come asa shock that he loves the toys,
and that's a reasonable love. Themovie in toy Line that we're talking
about is Trendmaster's Mars Attacks, asdirected by Tim Burton. That is why
I'm here Talking Toys. Welcome toTalking Toys with Taylor and Jet, where
(01:42):
we go back in time to discussour favorite toys, one toy line at
a time. Hello, and welcometo Talking Toys with Taylor in Jeff,
Hi, Taylor, I'm Taylor. You you love this movie, don't you?
(02:08):
Um Yeah, Actually it's it's oneof those It's not like I enjoy
it for it's over the top campiness. But I I grew up on the
fifties air sort of uh sci fib movie real films. Taylor was born
in the late seventies. Folks,by the way, just need to less
(02:29):
you forget well, and it's it'sinteresting enough, like like I remember I
had, um God, you know, Invaders from Mars and the Planet of
Vampires and like all those movies.I grew up watching that and old sixties
uh Star Trek. So my myparents were huge sci fi buffs and nerds.
(02:53):
And my mom loved like the theMonster movie so Godzilla, and and
she loved like the alien attack typemovies. It's like the blob Crab people
like all that. Like I grewup watching this stuff. So when the
movie came out, I was superexcited. But when I saw it,
(03:15):
I didn't quite understand it first thatit was meant to be like kind of
a camp sort of like joke aboutit. And it took it took me
watching it again to realize, oh, okay, that's that's what's going.
I mean, I enjoyed it,but I was like, something fills off.
It doesn't feel right. It's itwas too much camp. Well,
(03:37):
and that's the thing is, likeI get what it was supposed to be.
Yeah, it still just didn't workas camp. It was tonally,
it was kind of all over theplace. Um, anytime you have Jim
Brown and Tom Jones as your heroes, I'm in. I'm all in.
But it just didn't work. Itdidn't work as camp. It didn't work
(03:57):
as a throwback to the fifties. It's thing about it just did not gel
for me. And I've gone backand tried to watch it since, and
I can appreciate the look of thefilm, you know again, Yeah it
looks cool. It's a it's ait's an amazing looking film, as most
of Tim Burton's films are. Buthis films do tend to suffer from a
lack of of of a consistent tone. And sometimes that's a that's a feature,
(04:21):
not a bug, But in thiscase, I think it definitely is
a bug. I was really hopingthis movie would be much better in the
studio obviously in trendmasters, was hopingthat it would be. Yeah, while
we're on the topic of old movies, let me ask you this. Did
you when you were a kid,did you see the Thing from Another World?
Yes? So did you? Howold were you when you saw the
(04:42):
Thing for the first time John Carpenter'sremake, Oh Man, So I was
probably I think I was like twelve. Okay, what seems kind of young.
It's like sor that. Let metell you my experience with it.
I was I was either twelve orthirteen, and I was spending and with
a friend of mine and we weretrying to find something to watch late at
(05:02):
night. He's like, I'll getthis. I said, well, that's
supposed to be good, let's putit in. So at two am in
a pitch black room, I sawthe Thing for the first time when I
was thirteen years old. It wasamazed. Yeah, and that's why it
remains one of my favorite movies.Ever, I love that movie, and
it's one of those. I mean, can I give spoilers here if you
haven't seen it by now, I'mreally sorry. But when the Thing was
(05:30):
at two thousand and ten version cameout, well, and that was supposed
to be like a prequel to thisone, right, well, yeah,
it takes place about thirty minutes beforethe Thing. John Carpet and I've heard
it's awful. It's actually it's notthat bad. It's it doesn't that means
it's awful, folks. Taylor sayingit's not that bad means it's awful.
I think the problem with it is, you know, the feel of the
(05:54):
casting of the thing, like theyfeel like they're a part of that station,
like they feel like they're they're meantto be there. Whereas this group
they had outsiders that were brought into investigate this, and they don't feel
like the group doesn't feel as cohesive. They don't have the same chemistry as
the other group, but they're alsolike scientists and stuff, drawn from different
(06:17):
areas together. Whereas when we're dealingwith the station that the guys are on,
the alien happens in on their territory. They had already been there,
and they had already been there workingtogether for a long time. So one
feels like they're cohesive, the otherone they don't feel quite cohesive. And
(06:41):
the reason why is because they're outsidersbeing brought in together to investigate this thing.
It's actually it's not bad. Haveyou ever seen it? I have
not worth checking out? And Ibelieve it is on Netflix now, So
if you have Netflix, because Ithink I put in my queue because I
was. I planned on watching itand then I think I've got the thing
(07:02):
on discs. I was going toplay it afterwards. Okay, well,
because I haven't watched them back toback in a very long time. Okay,
well, you know we're not hereto talk about that. But the
lad the only other, the lastthing I'll say about it is the scariest
part of the thing, John Carpenter's. The thing to me is Wilford Brimley
without a mustache. So back toMars attacks by trend Masters. Taylor,
(07:27):
did you or do you have anyof these toys right now? No?
So, okay, so this wasone of those that when they came out,
I can't remember what I was collecting, but um, it's like I
wanted to get some, but Ialways felt like they were overpriced. And
I think this is about the timethat the Kinners Star Wars stuff had been
coming out strong. It would havebeen a year before. Yeah, yeah,
(07:50):
well none of the Kinner Star WarsI think it launched in ninety six
of the first ninety five, itwas fall So I was collecting, Yeah,
I was collecting those instead of these. So and I never found these
on clearance or anything, because usuallyif I would get like another brand of
(08:11):
something, that would be on clearanceor whatever at my local kbis UM.
But I never found them on clearance. And then I've gone to look for
these before to buy because I'd liketo have a couple of these in my
collection, but they're kind of priceysometimes, Like you have, I bet,
yeah, yeah, you have tofind the right one, all right,
(08:33):
So all right, but but youhave seen them in the wild at
least if you have, you atleast like held one in your hand at
a store or somewhere. No,I've never got to hold one in my
hand. Only were all right,So we're both flying by with toy Poloy,
which again great one of the greatestYouTube channel names ever. Has a
really good video about about these guys. So what we're gonna what we're gonna
talk about is there are actually twodifferent versions. There's the the movie versions
(08:58):
which came on car that had likea red color scheme to them, and
then there were a couple that cameout on a card that had like a
blue and purple color scheme that area little more intense looking. And I
don't know if they're I've seen conflictingreports they're they're based on a comic book
that came out. They are basedon the old TOPS cards. So let
(09:20):
see, when I look at theTOPS cards, they look like the ones
from the movie. That's why Iget confused what they're talking about what the
TOPS cards is. Back in theday Tops, when they were putting out
cards for like the old Mars attacks, like what a lot of the people
were collecting the older TOPS cards andthe cards that were based on the comic
(09:41):
strip that came out. They're fashioningthese figures off of the old TOPS cards
based on the old comic. Okay, they put out another run of TOPS
cards for the movie, right,But I remember seeing the stuff from the
sit sixties and maybe I'm just lookingat the wrong thing. I don't know,
so okay, well that's where weare. So we're discussing both,
(10:05):
but we obviously have at least Ido have a better opinion of one than
the other, and we'll get intothat in a bit. But there are
two twelve inch scale figures, theSupreme Martian Ambassador, which is based on
the movie, and the Supreme MartianCommander, which is based on the original
cards in the comics. Won't bespending any time on those unless Taylor has
(10:26):
him in his top five. Soin the Basic series we had two four,
six, eight, ten ten figures, and then we had two spaceships
that we're not in scale with thefigures, but I do want to discuss
them because I just think they're neat. And then there were two ray guns
like a brain disintegrator. There's ablue and a brain disintegrator that looked exactly
(10:48):
the same except for the color scheme. The green one had a pink brain
in it and the blue one hasa green brain in it, and they
just looked like something straight out ofthe fifty sci fi and I love it.
I know I have seen I didlie a little bit. I have
seen these in the wild okay, and these I was actually trying to get
a holt of one. I cameacross the green one with the pink brain.
(11:09):
And what I like about is whenyou, you know, pull the
trigger for the lights and the lightsand sound effects, the brain throbs in
the back. That's cool, soit like moves. So this is one.
This is something that I have comeacross and I can't remember why I
didn't get it or wasn't able toget it, but they probably want in
(11:31):
your budget was three No, No, it was something else, and I
just I remember because this was fourbucks, I would totally about it,
right, um, but I rememberthere being something something that kind of stood
in the way of me getting this. Well, we're not going to be
including those in our discussion because inthere there there there cause play toys or
role play toys, so we won'tbe discussing those. So let's start with
(11:54):
these these saucers. We get theDoom Saucer and the Flying Saucer, and
these both came with like two inchfigures that were articulated and everything, and
the canopies open so you could takethe figures in and out, and they
had like lights and sound and asfar as I can tell, they're both.
They're different sculpts. They're not. They didn't just reuse the same sculpt
(12:15):
My personal preference is the silver onebecause it looks like a flying saucer out
of the fifties. It is literallyjust a saucer shape with with a dome,
a glass dome in the middle thatthe figure sits in and can see
out of. The Doom saucer looksmore like something out of like Battlestar Galactic.
It's a little more streamlined and hasguns on it, where the other
one doesn't. Talk to me alittle bit about what do you know about
(12:37):
these two? Okay, So,of course the flying saucer is actually from
the movie. So in the openingcredits when the when they're spinning and you
hear Danny Elfman's you know, Martianmarch Um, the flying saucers from that,
that is what's depicted on our moviebox. So the marsh attacks and
(12:58):
red. The flying saucer actually hasthere's a few features in it, one
of which it's got five sounds andflashing lights that light up inside the canopy.
It has the folding landing gear thatfold into the body, and it's
got like a ratchet click, soit clicks into place and so it doesn't
(13:18):
fall out. And then at thevery bottom it has a tray that you
pull out and it has the twoglow in the Dark missile launchers there,
so like the missiles have glow inthe dark paint on the tips, so
when you fire them, it lookslike if you fire them in the dark,
it looks like little photon blast. The canopy opens and you've got little
(13:43):
kind of slot to fit your figure, and it has a seat that holds
the canisters in place, so thefigures of rolling around kind of snaps into
place, and the figure itself fora two inch figure, it's almost like
a mask figure. So it's okay, it really is. They look great.
They they're incredible. They've got swivelhead, swivel arms, and swivel
(14:05):
legs. But there's swivel legs Ibelieve are on one post, so the
legs just kind of moved together. But that's still four points. Yes,
No, that's great. Yeah fora figure that's small, that is great.
Yeah. And what else is trendMasters known for? Why don't we
haven't really discussed them much on thisshow, have we? Yes? We
(14:26):
talked about trend Masters. When wetalked about war planets, Okay, I
do remember those. Okay, thoseare cool. Yeah yeah, those are
cool. So yeah, that wasthe thing that a lot of people were
worried about because um war planets, like trend Master stuff like war planets,
there are a lot of their partsand stuff kind of broke really easily.
(14:46):
It was kind of like people wereconcerned that this was, you know,
not very good. But the shipsthemselves, apparently are are pretty quality creations,
and can you can find them forsale, like still sealed a lot
of them. I've seen oh yeaha lot of people at this point.
You know, they because they boughtit as nostalgia for Mars attacks and now
(15:11):
they're selling. I mean, youcan buy some of these figures for about
twenty bucks, like ten dollars shipping, so about thirty dollars a figure.
It's just not too bad. No, ten dollars shipping is a bit much,
but that's just me. Well,I mean shipping has gone up like
crazy. I mean, yep,all over the place, it really is.
So Okay, Well, that's that'sthe that's the the spaceship. So
(15:35):
let's let's talk a little bit aboutthe figures themselves. So we had ten
figures, starting with the the MartianAmbassador, because that's the one that I
kind of, Um, the MartianAmbassador and the Martian Leader, I think
are sort of the the two standardbearers of the line. I think that's
(15:56):
when I think of Mars attacks. These are the two that I think of.
Um, it looks to be isit the same head sculpt for all
of the Martians, at least allall of the the all the movie Martians.
Yes, I believe all the moviebased Martians have the same head sculpt
The Martian Leader might have a fewmore tendrils on the head than the others,
(16:18):
but they all look about the same, except for the Martians Spy Girl,
because she's female. Well we'll getto that. That's that's a really
cool figure. So the Martian,Yeah, the Martian Leader, the Martian
Ambassador, and the Martian Trooper tome all look the same. For the
Martian Spy Girl is just has hasa more slender head. The head sculpts
(16:41):
look the same. Now what aboutthe articulation on these It looks to me
like because they've all got these jarson their heads like these you know,
uh, glass covers that will comeoff. So I'm assuming their heads rotate
and their shoulders and hips move.Is that correct? Yes, it's from
(17:04):
what I've seen. The the articulationis pretty simple. Um, it's all
swivel base. So you've got thekind of V shaped swivel base for the
legs, so the legs can kindof turn in almost like a little ewalk.
Um, You've got the swivel atthe shoulders so the arms can move
up and down. And then onceyou take the dome off, you've got
the swivel on the head that allowsthe head to turn left and right.
(17:27):
Um, but you have to takethe dome off each time. There's not
like a lever or anything that wouldmove the head inside right. Yeah.
No, and it would be coolif there was. Yeah, I mean,
now, what what I what Ihaven't been able to see is it
looks like the legs, at leastfor the most part, when when they
(17:48):
rotate, they sort of rotate outlike at a V form. Does that
sound right to you? Yes?Okay, yeah, yeah, and it's
it is because of the body shape. So one of the things that they
did was in order to m kindof capture some of the look and fill
of the movie, but I guessstill howls. You know, all the
(18:11):
features for it is they they dumbeddown the articulation, but they put it
in that V stance so it's legscould sit outward, because otherwise they would
have had to straighten up the jointsand move them the you would have to
narrow the crotch. So in orderto get everything in there and to get
(18:32):
everything working, you had to kindof tilt the body down and put it
into this V form. So itis kind of squatty and it's leg articulation,
but it works for them. No, it did does, and it's
not that big a deal because again, you know that the articulation is such
that they really don't have a wholelot of movement. I do love,
(18:55):
though, the Martian Ambassador has thiscape that flows out and it's not like
a soft Goods cap, but Ijust think it looks really really neat.
Yeah, it is pretty cool themthere reminds me a lot of like Playmates
with them, the Flash Gordon series, where you have that kind of hard
(19:15):
sculpted kind of cape sort of thing. It reminds me a lot of that.
You're very Yeah, very very true. Now them, the ambassador comes
with a chaos ray blaster. TheMartian leader comes with um it says,
(19:36):
a disintegration race staff. But itlooks like he comes with the same gun,
and it looks like the Martian troopercomes with the same gun. They
just I guess they shoot different things. Is that what happens? Well,
I think they all shoot the sameso okay, each one they both come
with the same hand cannon. Soyou've got the green hand cannon. And
(20:00):
in the movie, if I remembercorrectly, you have some that shot red
beans, some that shot green beans, which is why you add like some
skeletons that turned red and some thatturned green like Christmas as they said.
So I don't think there's any distinctionbetween the cannons here for distinguishing which one
(20:21):
turned red and green. But theyhave the hand cannons, and then they
have an extra accessory, which istheir shooting accessory. So like whereas one
has a disintegration ray, here, they also have it's like a missile launcher
piece that I believe attaches either tothe arm or to the cannon that shoots
(20:42):
the glow in the dark missiles.Whereas the leader so the ambassador has that
the leader has a staff, andthe staff is what shoots the missiles,
right, got it? Okay,And then the trooper would be let's see,
looks like he's got a gun,and his looks exactly the same as
(21:02):
the ambassador. To me, thetrooper his actually like some sort of like
wrist mounted bazooka. Okay, I'mlook, I see, I'm seeing the
gun, and then I'm seeing thetwo little pommels that he comes with,
the two little spears that shootout.Yeah, there's like a blue thing next
to him that's the launcher. Soeach one has the hand cannon, but
then they also have a missile firingpiece that comes with them. Got it.
(21:25):
And the ambassador and the Martian leaderboth have capes. The Martian leaders
is purple. Are these the exactsame figure just with different color schemes on
the capes? I believe, so, yeah, I think the Martian trooper
is the exact same figure, justwithout the cape. Yes, I believe.
If If they are not exact, they are really really close sculps.
They look to me exactly the same, like probably reused like sculps, but
(21:52):
looking at each one. So I'mlooking at the Trooper. I'm gonna go
back and look at this ambassador.Yeah, they look identical except for the
cape. And then even the leaderlooks like has the same exact cape,
but only in purple. Yeah,I think I think they're the exacting figure.
(22:15):
They should have different different accessories,so which I mean, that's that's
what the movie looked like as well. So the one that we got that
was completely different is the Martian spygirl, and this one is less articulated.
I believe it's only her head inher arms because she's wearing a dress
and I remember this character specifically fromthe movie. Yes, and then she
has a does this head come offand you put the human head on top
(22:40):
or does it fit over the Ibelieve it fits over the alien. That's
so cool. So it's got um. So you've got the purse, and
then you've got the little fold outray gun that she uses, because that's
Lisa, Lisa Marie Presley, isn'tit. That sounds right at that played
(23:00):
her. So you've got the bag, you've got the masks that snaps I
believe over the alien head, thelittle ray gun that probably fits either inside
the bag or in the hand, and then a missile launcher. But then
you also have because one of thethings she had was a ring that had
the eyeball on it, the spywith so you come with a role playing
(23:22):
I oh that you could use.I see, that's cool. That's really
cool. We get a different sculptwe get a really cool accessory. It's
I mean, what's not to likeabout this figure? It's pretty cool,
you know. It's interestingly enough,we don't get the rings inside them inside
of the toy packages very often, and this feels a lot kind of like
(23:45):
with the was it triclops I thinkthat had the ring with them that was
like the gray Skull ring. Itfeels a lot like that, where it's
like, you got this cool figureand you get something to role play with.
I can see that. Yeah.So that's the the movie versions of
the of the Martians. The restof the line. We have the we
(24:07):
have the Doom Robot, the DoomSpider, which the less said about the
better. We have the Martian TrooperBlue, we have um the Paic Overlord,
and again I can't respend so longsince i've seen it, I'm not
sure if I'm pronouncing this right. And we have the Martian Trooper in body
(24:29):
armor. And then we have theSupreme Commander, so we have more of
the what i'll call the the gnarlylooking aliens, and we have the fun
movie aliens. Yes, and theselook to be maybe different sculpts. I
can't really tell. It's possible theMartian Trooper and the Supreme Commander or the
(24:56):
same body sculpt I'm look unless, but it's kind of hard to tell.
They they have the same head sculpt. I know, I don't know that
it's the same body sculpt because thethe Supreme Commander. No, they're different.
They're different, but they're they're moreripped. The Supreme Commander has the
(25:17):
you know they he's they've they've gotthe same like the the the the covers
on him, the the aquarium coverswhat do you want to call him over
them if I'm not mistaken, breathingdomes thank you. And then he's wearing
like the Supreme Commander is wearing likea shoulder path thing that goes all the
way across and his cape is attachedto that, so it makes him look
(25:40):
a little more imposing. Yeah, and you know what they remind me of
you're familiar with Martian Manhunter in theDC comics, right, yes, and
you know his form when he's inhis Martian form, it's a little more
sinister looking. Yes, it's kindof what this reminds me of. There,
it's the different version. This islike the this is like the horror
version of the movie Aliens. Interestinglyenough, if it this almost like this
(26:04):
setup of these figures, because Imean, they don't exactly mimic the tops
cards as they say, but theyfeel more like we're gonna make Mars Attacks
toys. We're gonna base it onthese old comics and do it to kind
of like jump on the bandwagon. And then they're like, hey, would
(26:26):
you like the licensing to do MarsAttacks? And it's like sure, And
so it feels like they had thesealready planned out because they're all different,
scults are all different unique and thenthey're like, oh, we need some
other figures. So they did onescult, made it to three figures and
(26:48):
then got the girlfriend in and thenthat was like that that was their tooling.
Does that make sense? Yes,yes, because looking at this this
these spill and granted the movie designthere's not a lot to it, but
the non movie design feels like there'sso much more effort and love that's gone
(27:11):
into it, or at least moreingenuity. Yeah. Yeah, it's hard
to tell what the what the articulationis on these, though, I assume
that they're that they're the same asthe movie ones. They are articulated at
the shoulder and the hips. No, there's more articulation. Actually, Okay,
what am I missing on these? So they've got they've got, of
course, swivel head and they've gotthe kind of domeheads that you can take
(27:33):
off. You've got the swivel shoulders. The I'm looking at the overlord right
now, he's got swivel shoulders,he's got swivel elbows, swivel waist and
it looks like swivel legs. Okay, and a skull built into his blaster.
(27:55):
Interesting, So, yeah, youryour theory makes more sense. It's
kind of range, Yeah, itis. And these guys again, their
face sculps, the head sculps onthese are they look very similar, but
they're just a little more, likeI said, they're a little more intense.
Um. And we've got different colorshere, Like the Martian trooper has
(28:18):
like a blue tint to his well, maybe the maybe the Supreme Commander is
the same, and it looks differentbecause it's it's set against the red.
Yeah, it's it. From here, it looks like it's green. The
suits more green than the body. The body suit for the trooper has got
more blue, whereas the commander hasmore of that kind of green color.
(28:41):
And then the right arm, whereasthe trooper has more of the kind of
aqua with a blue armor set.And can we talk about that, Overlord,
Well, hold on, before wedo that, I want to I
want to ask one question. TheMartian trooper and the Martian trooper with body
armor. I believe the same figure. It's just at the body armor one
(29:02):
has. Obviously the body armor. Is that right? As far as you
can tell, I'm looking, Let'ssee, it looks the same. Uh
it They look very I mean, they look like they're supposed to be from
the same and they're they're not.Okay, um. And the reason why
is because I believe this figure isa complete bendable. So this I don't
(29:27):
think has any articulation. I believeall the limbs on it are bendables,
okay, which kind of a littleWayne, Yeah, Wayne, Yeah,
Because it's it's it's a shame becausethis body armor and the dune tendrils that
(29:48):
he's got are really cool. He'sgot all sorts of neat attachments on it.
So it's yeah, it's it's it'sa shame. Okay, So the
Supreme Commander, let's let's go aheadtalk about him. What do you what
do you want to talk about? So one of the things I wanted to
talk about is this one has acompletely different head skull than everyone else.
So everyone else that's got the armorplated head. Oh you said the Overlord,
(30:10):
not not the spread Yeah, theOverlord. He looked like he got
a third eye. He does, well, he doesn't. He only has
one eye. The other eyes areclosed down in their socket, and then
he has one eye in the middleof his head with gold vein work going
across his head and more like askull based sort of like teeth in his
mouth. I mean, he isgnarly looking, and can I mention he
(30:36):
has purple? Oh? I knewyou even knew you were going to mention
that. Yeah, so he's obviouslyyour favorite. No, but it is.
It's a very intense looking figure, and he's probably the most interesting of
all of them, because again,he's got all that purple, he's got
the he's got the same sort ofa very similar like shoulder thing going across
his chest to the suprememder, buthe doesn't have a cape attached to it.
(31:03):
He's he's wearing like a long duster, a sleeveless duster, yeah,
which is almost it is almost likea duster slash type of tunic, like
an overcloak, kind of like whatDarth Vader wears over his armor before they
put his armor over his tunic beasts. Yes, yeah, yeah, that's
(31:27):
yeah, that's it. And he'sgot a really really really intense looking gun
as well, like a huge gun, yeah, with a skull embedded in
it, and they painted the skullso instead of it just be painted beige.
Oh that's wild. I don't wantto give too much away, but
(31:52):
he might show up on your list. He might show up on every single
spot on that list. This isbeautiful. There's there's one that might show
up on my list, and thatis the Doom Robot. Because this thing
is just goofy um. You seean alien sitting inside of it. It's
like a big met suit and yousee an alien sitting inside of it,
(32:14):
and then the rest of it isjust this this like big fifties sixties looking
robot with with these really like chunky, chunky feet legs and feet, and
these four tendrils that come out thathave these um, what would you call
him these pincers on them. Yeah, And I love the color scheme.
You get red white or red, silver and blue, mostly blue, but
(32:36):
you got some silver and red accentson it. This thing just looks cool
at a glance. It looks justlike a robot, but then you see
the alien sitting on top with andnot just an alien sitting on top,
it's an alien with a scowl. He's got this big kind of toothy jowl
of a of a grin on hisface as he's sitting up at these controls
on the inside. It's hilarious.Well, I mean, that's probably the
(33:00):
same look you'd have in your faceif you were riding a round in this
kind of suit. What's kind ofcool about this? So it's got a
it's got a missile launcher on theside, so it actually has a spring
loaded launch erm and it's got Ithink a little bit of articulation in the
legs. But then all four armsare on bindy wires, which is it
(33:22):
makes sense in this case. Butthen one two of the pincers actually are
articulated where they have a sculp tomake the pincers open and clothes. Oh
that is cool. Mhm nice.Yeah, this is a really good Do
(33:43):
you know, do you happen toknow if this one is taller? I'm
assuming this one is taller than theother figures right now. It's I believe
the same height. Okay, Sothe guy inside is just smaller, smaller,
and it's just and it's not afull figure in there. It's like
just like from the shoulders up,they've just sort of placed him in there
right as far as I can tell. Yeah, from what I'm saying,
it looks like he's just kind ofsculpted in and then him over the top.
(34:06):
Yeah, And looking at him comparedto the others on card, he
might be a little bit shorter thansome of them, not the movie figures,
but the tops figures. He lookslike he might be a touch shorter,
but not by much. Okay,Yeah, the spider I have nothing
(34:29):
to say about. If you wantto discuss it, that's fine. I'll
just mute. I'll I'll take myheadphones out and you can you can talk.
I was trying to find like agood picture. It's so it is
also like a machine, and thenyou wouldn't necessarily know what's from Mars attacks,
So if you just saw it ata glance, no, And this
is the one that's it's kind ofweird. So it's got um it's got
(34:50):
the bendable legs as well, soit actually has a wire to bend the
legs and each one of the legsare on a wire bindy. You've got
articulation in the head, the headactually turns, and then the back you
have a canopy with a small, tiny sculpted alien in it. So it's
like a machine. So the alienrides this spider a sort of machine around
(35:16):
and it's it's weird because it lookskind of on that line between an actual
spider and a machine. And itfeels more spider than it does a machine.
It feels more like an alien spiderthan anything else. And I don't
I don't know. This one isit's interesting, but it's it's also like
(35:40):
whereas whereas the Martian the Doom Robotis scaled down a little bit, this
technically would be scaled down, probablycloser to the size of the figures for
the Doom Disc and the Flying Saucer. Okay, so they're more like in
the two two inch range. Yeah, so the scales on these kind of
(36:02):
balance around. Okay, Yeah,it's it's it's weird. It's a little
weird. Yeah, all right,So we'll take a little short break right
now, then we'll come back totalk about our top five, because that's
all there is with his line.Okay, So even though neither one of
(36:28):
us has one of these, andI did the story time, I will
lead us off and I will letyou finish out the top five, Okay,
because you have far more affection forthis movie on the line than I
do. I am going to gowith my number five is going to be
(36:49):
the overlord for everything we talked about. He kind of scares me. It's
a really good design. It's acreepy design. It really does kind of
scare me, especially that that faceskull just looks so evil and so reptilian
and monstrous that I might not wanthim actually on my shelf. But it's
a really cool figure. I likethe Colored Team. I love the skull
(37:10):
in the in the gun. Yeah, and he comes with a trident.
So that's I mean, he's he'she's kind of firing on all cylinders.
So the Overlord is my number five. That's a good one. That is
a good figure. Okay, somy number five is going to be from
the movie portion of the line.It is the Martian Trooper of Proton ray
(37:31):
Blaster. Okay. I like him. You know, he's just a basic
Martian trooper, but it works inthis case. I really dig I love
the design that Din Burton and themdid. I thought it was whimsical,
funny, and it really does honeitself back to kind of a fifties style.
Yes, so this is kind ofthat quintessential piece that really feels like
(37:55):
Mars attacks. Yeah, agreed.I won't say more because he may come
up on my list. Number fouris another one from the the comic line.
It's the doom Robot of the thing. We talked about it a minute
ago. It's just goofy. It'sgoofy as hell, and I love it.
He would be higher on my listif it was if inside it was
one of the movie aliens, becausethat would make it even goofier. Yeah,
(38:20):
as it stands. Like you said, he just looks malevolent rather than
amusing. But but I do everyI love everything else about this one.
The color scheme, like you said, it harkens back to that you know,
late fifties early sixties vibe. It'sit's bulky and blocky, just like
you would expect from that time. And you can you can see it's almost
steampunk looking because you got all thesedials and everything on the front, you
(38:45):
know, measuring everything. So Ijust love this one. And you can
also see how like the hydraulics andeverything. You see how it would work,
and I think that's that's interesting tome. So I really like that
one. And like I said,if it if it had a regular a
movie version of The Martians, andit might actually have been number one on
my list, that's a good call. Yeah all right, Um, so
(39:08):
we're on my number four. Mynumber four is the tops version Martian Trooper.
You know, color scheme wise, everything, he reminds me of a
character from like the New Adventures ofhe Man. I can see that,
and I just I like the lookof this guy. Um, they've got
(39:28):
the pretty decent articulation for what they'redoing. The has sculpts on those are
amazing with the metallic greens and thelime greens almost kind of a skeletor as
sort of vibe for the look ofthe face, and I just it looks
sinister. I really dig this figurea lot. No, that's a good
one. Yeah, I am withyou on that one. I think that's
that's a good choice. Thank you. My number three is the flying Saucer,
(39:54):
And you know, part of thereason I wanted to talk about it
so I could put it on mylist. I just love this thing because
when you think of a flying saucer, that's exactly what you think of,
right The only the only change mightbe the fact that it's got that observation
bubble in the middle of it.But even that, that is a version
of a flying saucer that I thinkof. And everything about this is just
(40:15):
if you say Mars attacks flying saucer, that's exactly what I expect to see.
And like you said, it comesto the figure, it comes to
an articulated figure. It's got lightsand sounds and everything. This is one
I might have. I almost putthis on my one that got away because
I would kind of like to haveone of these on my shelf, but
(40:36):
I didn't. I didn't pick thisone is the one that got away.
And we'll talk about why when weget there. But like I said,
everything about this I love that it'sit's very simple, it's very sleek.
It's just silver. There's no youknow, there's no added like detailed and
no decals or anything on it.It's just plain silver. And I just
think it looks so cool. Ilike that. Yeah, it's it that
(41:01):
plainness and and even like so,I did see a video of it and
the detail in the in the canopyis actually pretty nice. Um. It
is a well made vehicle. AndI guess that would fit like kind of
mask figures, wouldn't it. Idon't know, not not seeing the figure
(41:22):
in front of me, I don'tknow, but it would come close.
Yeah, it will come close. That'd be pretty cool. I like that.
What about your number three? Okay, so my number three and I'm
gonna go up here we go theSupreme Commander from the Tops cards. Um,
I like this one because I reallydo dig them. The again,
(41:45):
much like the Trooper that the headsculpt on, It's awesome and I like
that the sculpting of the Trooper versusthe Commander are different. Um including like
the uniforms, they're different. ButI I love the color scheme on this
and this this feels more like theTim Burton asked Mars Attach creations, but
(42:08):
very modernized and kind of updated. The It's got a really great blaster,
the glow in the dark missile tippieces are really cool. The spear that
he comes with is awesome. Idig this one a lot. Good choice.
Yeah, I there are no moreof those on my list. The
(42:28):
rest of mine are all from themovie, but I certainly understand like you
do like those. Yeah, mynumber two is what we're up to.
My number two is the Martian Trooper. Every reason that you said about him,
you know, he's a he's thegeneric Martian, but you love the
design and you can't really go wrongwith the standard, right right, This
(42:49):
is this is when you think ofMars attacks. This is the alien that
you think of. And I lovethe suit. It just it looks goofy
and it looks retrofuturistic, which iswhat they were going for. And the
color scheme works. Everything you saidabout it is absolutely true. And I
love that he comes with a verybig ass gun and that risk launcher is
(43:09):
really cool. It's just a reallycool figure. Like I said, this
is when when I think when Ithink of Mars attacks, this is what
I think of. That's a goodcall. And like I said, you,
everything you said about it holds true. So that's yeah. The Martian
Trooper from the movie line is mynumber two. Awesome, what about your
number two? All right? Mynumber two is actually from the movie line
(43:32):
Martian Spy Girl. This figure ishilarious. That is my number one.
I'll go ahead and spill it.That is my number one. This one
and again this is another one thatcould have been my one that got away.
The only reason I wouldn't pick thisone is because you wouldn't automatically know
that it's from this line. Butyeah, go go, Joe. Sorry,
I didn't mean to interrupt you goahead. Well no, no,
(43:53):
it's it is it's like once thinkingabout it, once you put the face
on and everything, and once youyou know, put the blaster in the
hand or or I think it goesin like the bag and you put the
bag on everything, Like it's nothingthat you would think of, Like people
would be like, what is thisfigure? Like, oh, check it
out, and you rip off theface and there's this horrific skull alien brain
(44:17):
monster unneath. You're like, yeah, like you said, it's it's goofy,
and I love that it comes withthat ring that you can see through
and everything. It's it's just it'sit's goofy. And that's one of that
was that was one of the thingsabout the movie that worked the best for
me, was this particular alien orMartian I should say, and yeah,
(44:37):
it's it's great. So that's it'sthat's my number one. So it's it
is. So then what is yournumber one? Since we already spill my
number one? All right, mynumber one is also from the movie line.
It is the Martian Leader. Okay, I love the so you know,
(44:58):
I like purple. I love purple, and I love red. So
both both the Martian Ambassador and theMartian Leader, like I could almost tie
them because I love both, Butthe Martian Leader out does the Martian Ambassador
because the Martian Leader has this reallycape incredible staff, a giant golden staff
(45:20):
that shoots missiles and a purple capeand a purple cape, and that just
sells for me. I love it, of course. Yeah, that's that's
a good. That's a very good, very good, very good choice.
I can't argue with that one.So that's our top five. So now
I was time to talk about theone that got away. So my one
that got away is very close toyour number one. My one that got
(45:43):
away is the Martian Ambassador. Andthe only reason I picked him over the
Leader is because for some reason, the red offsets the green on his suit
better. To me, it's ait's a better combination, and it just
looks a little more dam Although theMartian Leader does look very much like the
pogo ball, the purple and greenpogo ball that I had when I was
(46:05):
a kid, I forgot about those. Oh man, I love my pogo
ball. But the but the MartianAmbassador, Like everything you said about the
Leader holds true. But just whenagain, when I think of Mars attacks
other than the Soldier, this iskind of what I have in mind.
And if you have in him onyour shelf, everybody's going to know what
that's from. Because even though themovie was kind of a flop, I
(46:27):
wouldn't even necessarily call it a cultclassic or a cult hit, because most
people acknowledge that it looks cool, but it's not good. But everybody knows
those Martians. I know that headsculpt in the face, So they're gonna
look at that, They're gonna,Oh, that's from Mars attacks, isn't
it. So this is the oneguy, This is the one that I
would have want on my shelf, nice, nice, well, and if
(46:51):
you like, let's say you hada trooper and you had the ambassador,
but you didn't have the leader,it would work out because two out of
three of the Martians that ain't bad, right exactly? So what about you?
Which one is your one that gotaway? So my one that got
away? And this is definitely whatI'm going to be searching for. Um
(47:13):
is that the peec overlord. Okay, shocker, I I you know,
I hadn't really paid a lot ofattention until now. I absolutely in love
with this thing. It is sothis, this is the type of thing
that just like this would hit themonster shelf perfectly. It's like, Yep,
(47:36):
he belongs up there with the linesof the monsters and the giant robots
that have like hot dogs for brainsand trolls and and robots like he just
he fits that that look beautifully.Absolutely, that's sort of skull blaster.
Yeah, that hits Taylor's sweet spotright there. Oh man, yeah,
(48:00):
stand that purple, gnarly looking eyeballedmonsters. Oh yeah, it's the Taylor
trifecta. Awesome. Well, thiswas a fun line. This is a
line that's a lot more fun totalk about than the movie is to watch,
in my opinion. So we wouldlove to hear our listeners thoughts on
this line, and if you haveany on your shelf, we'd love to
(48:22):
see pictures, so ahead of theFacebook page and let us know what you
think of this line and of ourthoughts on it. Until next time for
talking toys with Taylor and Jeff.I'm Taylor and I'm Jeff. I Remember,
they're not dolls. They're action figures. Action figures with goalheaded blasters.
