Welcome to Talking Toys with Taylor andJeff, where we go back in time
to discuss our favorite toys, onetoy line at a time. Hello,
and welcome to Talking Toys with Taylorand Jeff. I'm Taylor, and I'm
(00:36):
Jeff and I'm Pam. What's thatyou say? A woman? Hey,
Pam? Hello Taylor, there's agirl on the show. I know,
hide all hide all your dorky magazinestoo late, o, folks. Pam
is here. Pam is my mysignificant other and she was a Patreon supporter
(00:58):
from day one, and so wedid one a half on to do a
top five show. I actually hadto coax her on. I said,
we could do whatever you want, and you had a really good idea.
One of her ideas was top fivetoys I wished were around when I was
a kid, which was a reallylong you said that. I didn't wait,
and Taylor, that's a pretty coolidea, right, It is a
really cool idea. So that's maybewhen will steal for Later on. She
(01:21):
the problem is she can only comeup with one, and it happened to
be Legos, and we found outthey started in nineteen forty nine and she
is younger than that by a coupleof decades at least. So, but
but what we came up with wasjust our top five all time toys,
and I was surprised Taylor we hadnever done this. I seems like we've
(01:42):
done something similar but not exactly ourtop five toys of all time. Yeah.
Yeah, So so what we're gonnado well this, This may take
a little bit of time because there'sthere's three of us here, and of
course Pam is not Dan Zair,so shout out so he will appreciate that.
(02:05):
Speaking of Dan posted a picture thisweek of him we're recording this and
at the end of September, Danposted a picture of him with Dave Filoni
because we're all we're both enjoying theAsoka series very much, and Pam commented,
oh look, it's my favorite StarWars person and Dave Filoni's okay too.
Basically she made Dan's a year.So but before we start, though
(02:27):
everybody knows Taylor and I background withtoys, Pam, you're not necessarily as
big of a toy fan as Taylorand I because you're not Taylor and I.
But what what is your relationship withtoys or when you were a kid,
what is your what was your relationshipwith toys? Well, I had
a younger brother and a younger sister, so we we kind of all shared
toys. Our parents weren't super richor well off at all. So you
(02:54):
know, if if the newest thingcame out, you know the sit and
spin, That's what I can remember, you know things, Yeah, I
love that thing. And Taylor, you know when I get gifts for em,
I get the action things, activitytype toys. So those are the
things that I really really enjoyed whenI was a kid. Things that I
(03:15):
could build and things that I couldmake. Oh so you were a nerd,
is what you're telling. Yeah, yes, so I don't want to
ask, like you had toys, toys like like action figures, dolls and
all that stuff. We played outsidea lot too. So your your brother
is the middle, right middle,But you're all like a year within a
(03:38):
year or two years of one ofthem. So since there were two girls,
was your brother forced to play withgirls toys? No, my brother
had Star Wars toys. I've nevereven met her brother yet. That's gonna
happen to land Speed, that's true. Tell her, Okay, this is
a story. Why do you owehim a Landspeter? So when we were
(04:01):
kids, we lived with our grandparentsfor a little bit and I didn't want
to finish my food, and mygrandmother would make me sit at the table
until I had finished all of myfood. And after several hours of sitting
at the dinner table, I sawmy brother's Landspeeder on the floor kind of
(04:23):
clothes. So I went over snowgrabbed it, and I just stuffed all
of what was food left home.I played into this Landspeed, which was
mostly what mashed potato, which Iabsolutely love now. But right, yeah,
it didn't do much for the Landspeeder, so I still owe him one.
Yeah, she she feels bad aboutit, but not bad enough to
(04:44):
spend current current prices for a vintageLandspeeder. So if anybody of our any
of our listeners have a spare Landspeedersitting around, we always ask you to
send it to Taylor, send thisone to Pama and which we will then
pass on to her brother and giveyou no credit. What's ever. So
what we're gonna do is we'll goahead and we'll start our our top five.
(05:05):
So thank you Pam for sharing thatI've forgotten about that Landspeter story.
So we'll let Pam go first, and then Taylor will go, and then
I'll go, and I'll you'll knowwhy I wanted to go last when the
number five comes out. So,Pam, you've listened to the show,
you know the drill. So whatis your number five all time favorite toy?
(05:27):
Number five for me, so alot of the Kenner toys that we
all hear Taylor and Jeff talking aboutour Star Wars related or the like.
But my number five on this listis the Kenner Easy Bake oven. Right,
the best chocolate cake baked under alight bulb that I've ever had.
(05:49):
How long did that take baking itunder the light bulb? I mean never
small cakes? Yeah, it wasn't. I mean yeah. I always think
of the episode of Psych where hebaked the pineapple upside down cake and he'd
have been there for twenty four hoursand it was still raw in the middle.
Taylor, have you ever played withan easy bake oven? I have?
Yeah, somehow I knew you had. Yeah. One of our neighbors
(06:12):
had one, and we would justlike, we never baked anything in it.
I think we stuck mud in thepan. And then shoved it in
there. I think that too.Yeah, you just get like kind of
like cracked dirt. It's it's veryawkward. Yeah. Yeah, I always
kind of wanted an easy bake oven, I'll be honest, because we all
know Jeff was a fat kid.I still like to eat, so I
(06:34):
always kind of wanted one of those. I'm with you there, So when's
the lead? When do you rememberthe around the age you stopped playing with
the easy bake oven? Oh,I was probably eight or nine when you
started using a real oven after that? Yeah, okay, all right and
eating real cake better and eating wrongcake better. Yeah, it's gonna give
(06:55):
you food poison. We're not nowapparently, I know. Right. Yeah.
So okay, so Pam starting thisoff with I like outside the box
sinking, and that's not stuff wenormally talk about on the show. I
love it easy bake up and definitelydefinitely counts. And again, you know
we all love food. So that'sa good one. So that's your number
five, Taylor, What about you? What is your number five all time
favorite toy and folks? Taylor toldme he had about fifteen honorable mentions.
(07:17):
I told him to whittle it downto it to no more than two.
We'll see what happens. I'm actuallyimpressed that his list is down to five.
So Taylor, what is your numberfive all time favorite? Joy?
Well, before I jump in,like, I'm looking at my list and
I have like I have all thesethings just written down, and then below
it, I have five actually organized, so I know that this is finally
(07:42):
my list. But my number fiveI got I think it was on my
ninth birthday and I love it.It is this swamp Thing transducer playset with
the Bugman action figure. Yeah,we talked about that when we did the
swamp Thing show, and yes, that that is an awesome toy, that
that is very worthy of inclusion, very tough. I mean you said you
(08:03):
get that win. I got thatone. I think it was like my
ninth birthday. Now, all thoseswamp Thing toys that got donated, and
I had found a Transducer play setlike years later at a resale shop close
to where I was living in theapartments, and it was like, I
think two dollars and fifty cents andI have slowly been putting it back together
(08:26):
over the years, and I actuallyfound like the gold cage for the biomask
not too long ago, and Iwas talking to a guy who had the
Bugman action figure. He had severaland he sent me one as we were
trying to track down a PDF ofthe sticker sheet so we could actually put
(08:46):
the sticker sheets like repro sticker sheetson our transfercer playsets. So it's been
something over like the last decade thatwe've been putting together this. Most people
build cars. Taylor's rebuilding a train. We rebuild toys. Yeah. Well,
and I remember that when we didthe swamp Thing show. I remember
you were talking. You were inthe process of doing that. So question
(09:09):
you said you were going to printout a PDF for the sticker sheets.
Do you just print it out onsticker paper and then you just cut around
it? Yes, but we haven'tfound a really good scan of the original
sticker sheets that has a highlight resolutionto put onto the thing. So we're
still we're still going through and tryingto find that. That's surprising. So
again, any of our listeners,if you if you know where to find
(09:31):
one, Uh, this is thisis legit, send it to Taylor.
You can send it. The emaildoesn't cost you a thing. If anybody
has one. Okay. Cool,So Taylor's well, if that's your number
five, I hate. I can'twait to see what the rest of your
list is because it gets better.Okay, so my number five, this
is going to surprise you, Taylor. It's going to surprise you. Paym
It's going to surprise all of ourlisteners because this is a toy I'm fairly
(09:54):
certain I've never mentioned once to anyone. And the reason it's number five on
my list is when I started thinkingabout the toys I played with as a
kid, I kept going back tothis one. It wasn't one of mine.
It was one of my brother's toys. And you'll you'll understand why in
a minute. But my number fiveis the Tonka win a Bago. You
(10:15):
know what I'm talking about, Taylor? Is that the Is that from the
Adventure People line? Or no?That was? Yes? But no,
right, Yeah, it's it's metalbecause it's Tonka and it's it's it is
in the scale of three and threequarter inch figures. My brother had one.
This thing was hissing was huge.Yeah, it was huge. It
was probably two two and a halffeet long and about probably I don't know,
(10:39):
eight to ten inches wide. Andyou could take the top off and
you know, put people inside andeverything. And obviously we always talked.
We all know that Jeff was weirdas a kid. He wanted the toy
that would allow his his his actionfigures to do mundane activities. And this
win a Bago would allow them togo on vacation. And it even gave
them like sleeping quarters and everything. It was very earthbound. But I cannot
(11:03):
explain to you folks. You justgo look it up. This thing this
when you look it up, it'sit's a great toy. Yeah. It
had all these successories in it.It rolled, it was takas so it
rolled well, it was hefty, and it had this great if I remember
correctly, it was like this greenand white color scheme, very very seventies,
very seventies, late sixties, earlyto mid seventies. And I played
(11:24):
with this thing. I found itand we had two store rooms. We
had had a wooden storm in ametal storm. I found it in the
wooden storeroom and would go out thereand just play with it all the time.
I thought, wasps to get tothis thing. That's how cool this
toy was. Yeah. So again, Taylor, I'm pretty sure. I've
never mentioned that on the show before, have I This is the first time
you've heard about it, right,Oh, yeah, this is the first
time I've heard about Okay, Ithought, so it was go ahead.
(11:46):
I was gonna say. I couldsee like the rim Coe, like the
three and three quarter inch eighteen figuresgoing like perfectly with that thing. Yeah.
Absolutely, I would use my myg I Joe's my Star Wars figures,
and we did still have my brotherdid with it. Still had some
of the adventure people figures. Ithink they're adventure People. I may be
talking the wrong thing, but wehad these these figures that we go into
(12:07):
and they I remember specifically, themom looked like our mom if she had
red hair our mom had, butbut she she my mom would wear these
these these you know old mom seventyshorts and sandals and you know this,
the sleeveless shirts and everything, andthis woman was dressed like that, and
so it was. It was weird, but it's a it's a fun toy.
(12:28):
It's a really cool toy. Soif anybody out there has one and
remembers one, Chris Sheets probably knowsexactly what I'm talking about. Probably,
so I would be I'll be interestedto hear what he has to say.
So that's my number five. Sowe've we've all got this is exciting.
We've all got really good toys onour top, on our number five.
So pay we're back to you. What is your number four? So number
four. I'm not sure if thisone actually made it onto either Taylor or
(12:52):
of list, but number four isBarbie for me, which Barbie stereotypical,
stereotypical Barbie. If you've seen theBarbie movie, and if you haven't,
you need to go see it.It's stereotypical Barbie. And I had her
sister Skipper, okay, and I'msure we had Ken dolls and just you
(13:13):
know, a variety of them. But my favorite part of Barbie was just
all of the different clothes. Wehad the little house with you know,
the little closet and a little bitof hangers and all the clothes hanging up,
and so yeah, it was alot of fun to play pretend with
our Barbie dolls. Right, dolls, Barbie dolls. Yeah, remember their
(13:35):
dolls. They're dolls, not actuallyfigures, not actually figures. They're dolls,
not right, They're not articulated verywell. Very well. Yeah,
like what five points particulation on it? So you had Barbie Skipper and you're
pretty sure you had a can Yeah, so you'd say you had Kneff toys,
yes, and you and you mentionedyou had the house. But it
(13:56):
wasn't like the Barbie the Big Barbiedream House, not the Big Barbie dream
House just yea. Was it justlike the closet place set? Probably?
Yeah? And we had the camperokay, that's cool. Yeah. And
you know my sister and I weshared, so we didn't have our own,
(14:16):
right, each each had custody ofit whenever you're playing with it.
And you know, she's three yearsyounger than I am, so it was
a little bit of hand me downsthere. But now Taylor, does he
still have that that vacation home thatI brought to him several years ago?
No? Is that thing? Rememberit fell apart? Right? Yeah,
it finally fell apart. We foundwe found like a folding one because he
(14:39):
so he likes to take the Kimsand the twelve inch Gi Joe's he inherited
from me, and he likes tohave them go skate and so we have
like tech decks that they skate on. And he likes to have the bros
get together and go hang out andtalk to the girls and like do their
guy thing and work at the tikiHut. So like any and sometimes I'll
(15:01):
find like something on Amazon, likeI found a tiki hat for like five
bucks, and so we threw thatin there. And then he has a
kin that looks a lot like him, though the hair is shorter because he's
grown his hair out. And thenI found one that has a top knot
with an undershave that was kind oflike me, that's heftier, and so
(15:24):
that's that's my kin that I playwith when whenever we're we're doing our bro
time and like right broommates and andwe're paying rent and going to school.
Yeah, it's it's it's a niceway of of you know, like learning
how to grow up. But thenyou know, the Joe's will come and
(15:46):
it's like, you know, theywant us to enlist in the service and
then we've got to tour about thator of course, yeah, yeah,
we we can't have our you know, chick time right school. So Pam.
So Pam has an easy bake outin Barbie, going very very traditional
women's roles here, which is whythey're number five and number four. Okay,
(16:07):
good to know, you know, good to know, Taylor. What
about you? What about what you'renumber four? So my number four is
actually from a line that you absolutelylove, Jeff, one of your favorites.
Well, you know, speaking ofwhich, you know that, uh,
the Cell Company is putting out thosesectors. This is one of those
(16:32):
sectors. It's actually Prince Dargone andthe Dragonflyer. I tried to find a
one that wasn't well, I triedto find one that wasn't ikey for you.
I appreciate that, Taylor, Ido appreciate that. What I love
about the Dragonflyer, I know Iremember when I got it, because it
was one that I got from myaunt and uncle. My dad was kind
(16:52):
of mad about it because he's like, those things are expensive and he doesn't
need it. But they always gavethe best gifts. And I remember like
the whole glove aspect, with thelittle long leg finger gloves and the fact
that you could open the mouth ofthe dragonfly dragon and the flapping wings,
and then you know the fact thatyou had saddle bags that would hook onto
(17:15):
the saddle of the thing and holdlike extra weapons and rifles and shields,
like it was just the max ofwhat you could do with an action figure
and like a little vehicle type beastand I absolutely loved it. I thought
it was incredible and it was oneof those that I, yeah, I
(17:37):
was gonna say, I'm with youon there. As much as I despise
those toys because they creeped me out, they are really good toys. They
are really well made. So yeah, I'm sorry, what were you going
to say? I was gonna say, like, you know, I haven't
had like I've got a few Sectartoys now, but I didn't have any
of the Dragon writers like the onesI had as a kid. But when
(18:00):
I sell company, because they putout I think dark On and I can't
I think Stella, the girl fromthe mini comics and the cartoon. They
put them out, and as soonas I saw it, I pre ordered
it because apparently it's the same sizeas the Vintage, but it's like the
classic cartoon and comic colors, SoI can't wait until they come in so
(18:21):
I can put them with with theones I do have, and I'm glad
that they're doing it. I kindof wonder if they're going to try to
do the Puppets at some point.Yeah, maybe, so if they sell,
they will you know, if theysell, they will very cool.
So that's your number four. Yep, all right, well my number four.
And I struggled because I kind ofwanted to have as many toy lines
(18:45):
represented as I could, but atthe end of the day, I'm I
also wanted to say, you know, these are my favorite toys, so
I've got to there's one toy linethat's that's repeated here. It won't shock
anybody what it is, but thisisn't it. So my number four is
the Flash figure from Kinners Superpowers. And you know, the Flash is one
of my favorite characters of all time, and I always love that. Whereas
(19:07):
most of the figures you squeeze theirlegs to get their their action, their
their punching action or whatever, withthe Flash, you squeezed his arms instead,
and his legs would move. AndI've just always loved the Flash.
I love the bright red costume withthe yellow accents and everything. And I
remember getting this. I got thistoy at Howard's in Paris. If anybody
(19:30):
have to remembers the Howard's department stores, it was Gibson's and it was Howard's.
Now it's the Paris Junior College NursingSchool, so the store doesn't exist
anymore. But yeah, the Flash, I just love it. I've even
even bought the McFarlane version of it, and I am I've come this close
and I'm holding my fingers about ahalf an inch apart a couple of times
to buying the General Giant Jumbo versionof it, because I just love the
(19:52):
figure. I love the you know, we talked about it before, Taylor
when we did the Superpower Show.I love all of the bright primary colors,
and the Flash is always and Idon't know why, of all the
of all those characters, the Flashis one of my favorites. You know,
I love Superman Batman, but butI always have have had a soft
spot for the Flash. And ifpeople always say, well, all he
does his run fast, well it'snot all he does. You know.
He can vibrate through walls and everything. And I'm still mad that the Flash
(20:15):
movie wasn't better than it was,but you know, the Flash TV show
is outstanding. Grant Dustin is great. Did the movie. Here's my mini
review of the movie. It's irritatingbecause there's so many things in that movie
that work so well, so manythings that work well. All the things
to having to do with his familyare really to me wonderful, but there
(20:38):
are so many other things that justfall flat. It keeps it from being
even so bad. It's good. It's sort of like you're into it.
You're into it, and then somethingbad happens. It's almost like driving on
a smooth road and then hitting abunch of potholes and then it's smooth rope
again. Oh that's never good.Yeah, So it's you know, but
it's it's it's one of my favoriteSuperpower show us maybe my favorite Superpowers figure
(21:02):
and I don't know that, andmaybe Hawkman. But but as far as
top five, I have to havethe Flash on here because he is.
I just love the character. Andit's just like I said, I love
the Yellow, the Red, bicombo, everything I great. So the
Flash is my number four and that'sthe only time the Superpowers collection is represented
on this list of mine. Butwe all know that I love the Superpowers
(21:22):
toy line. Oh I know,I know. Well, I'm glad that
McFarland picked up a lot of thatlicense. I noticed that they put out
or they're about to put out theAll Black Batman and the eighty nine Run
Robin. I was thinking about pickingthose up. The only thing I don't
like about those toys is they're calledsuperpowers, but they don't have any action
(21:45):
features. I know. I didjust regular figure the bat and right,
but the bat wings cool, andI was checking out the car. It
looks pretty awesome. Yeah, theBatmobile's school. And then they did Wonder
Woman's Invisible Jet, which I thinkit's so yes, you need So that's
my number four. So that bringsus to Pam. You're number three,
(22:07):
my number three, So moving awayfrom traditional roles and more towards my nerdiness.
Sketch. Okay. Also, sofolks think of these is top five
toys. Think of these as whatyou would think about in the Toy Hall
of Fame. So it's we're castinga wide net here. Etra sketch is
(22:30):
definitely a toy, So why whythe etch a sketch? Well, so
I lived to draw. My grandmotherwas an artist, and and so are
you, folks. All of theart in my apartment it's all either movie
posters or it's art by either Tayloror Pam and their stuff is my favorite
stuff. The movie posters are fine, but the art that Taylor and Pam
(22:52):
have done is my favorite ever.So we think maybe someday I'll post some
pictures of it. But yeah,it's they're they're both this phenomenal. Anyway,
sorry interrupting senior praises, Okay, and so this was other than coloring
books and crayons. This was myfirst not really. I guess it's technical,
(23:17):
it's aluminum powder and you know, lines, But really the best that
I could manage was you know, weird stick figure people and houses. But
when I was making my list,I did I did google a little bit
and get some information that there areactual etch A sketch artists out there,
and you know, they produced professionalimages and they're permanent because they removed the
(23:42):
aluminum powder in them, and they'reyou know, shake proof and and permanent
framed works of arts. I sawone that's the taj Maal. I have
no idea how they did, butyeah, I saw on the I believe
it was The Tonight Show or maybeConan or Brian something. Once a guy
(24:03):
came in who was an etch Asketch artist, but he hadn't. They
weren't permanent these because one of themon the way in had slid out of
the back of his car and hadbeen erased. But it is absolutely amazing.
I want to say he did likea portrait of Bob Ross that looked
just like a black and white pictureof Bob Ross. Do you know have
you seen that, Taylor? Haveyou seen some of the what she's talking
about? Yes, I believe,And I think I think that was Conan
(24:26):
that did that. Yeah, Ithink so. The E Sketch show I
loved etch A Sketch. I usedto make some pretty mean stairs. You
know what I used to do onan etch A sketch. The only thing
I could ever do is I woulddo what I called it like a skyline,
a city skyline in front of alake. I would draw a line
across the middle, and then comeback across the line, and then I
(24:48):
would start doing like vertical lines, come over, come down with the vertical
line, so it looked like askyscraper, and I would keep going down
below the line, and I wouldjust do a series of those so that
when I was done, it lookedlike a skyline of a city in front
of a lake that was being reflectedin the lake. And I remember I
was in the fifth grade when itdid that. My teacher came over.
She's like, that's really good. It's like it's really simple, but it
(25:11):
but it did. It turned itwas pretty effective. It turned out pretty
well. And I even get tothe point where I would sort of the
reflection part of it. I wouldsort of distort it a little bit so
that it looked a little bit off, like the water maybe had some waves
in it or something, so thatI was actually pretty proud of that.
I don't know if I could dothat now. I don't know if I
have the patience to do it now. But yeah, it's just sketch.
I haven't thought about that in along time. Look very cool, it's
(25:33):
very cool. Good call, Goodcall. All right, Taylor, what
about you? What is your numberthree? So? My number three is
one that's near and dear to myheart. That's one that my sister gave
me, and I know we've talkedabout this one before. It's Return of
the Jedi jabas play set. Ofcourse, it's only number three. Well,
I have a couple more ahead ofthat that I really do love.
(25:56):
But I love that I mean,I still have my original. It's a
lot of the parts have been replaced, but it's one of those that I
have absolutely loved that thing since Igot it. I remember the box aren't
just being amazing and just loving everyaspect of that play set, all the
way down to the detail of likethe bones and the bodies and jaws and
(26:17):
like mice with sculptured within the bed, and then the job himself with the
tattoo, and it's just it's it'ssuch a cool, cool play set.
Well. And when we talked aboutthat on the Return of The Jedi Show,
you know, we both sort ofsaying it's praises And my favorite thing
about it, if I were nowat least, is the little dials that's
(26:38):
used to open up the trapdoor thathe sits on. You know, are
the faces that that there. There'ssort of faces that look like almost like
gargoyle faces or something sticking out ofUh. It's really really cool and and
you're right, silicious Crumb being onthere, it was really cool. And
yeah, when you open that upand you, yeah, you tyke the
bones and the mice and everything inthere, it's it's creepy and it's really
(27:00):
cool. It took a while fromme because originally I had colored the inside
sideways with the red crayon to makeeverything look bloody and gross. I remember
that. So when I found myplay set and I was cleaning up because
I had like water damage and Iwas trying to clean it up and get
the parox side, I remember goingthrough and having like use a tooth burch
(27:22):
to scrub all the crayon out ofthe jaws and the rib cages and stuff.
I'm like, well, I can'thave it bloody anymore. It's time
to clean. I need to makethis throwne PG for my case. Right,
Oh dear, good good call though, Yeah, job is jobs,
job is palace. Good call. All right, So we're at a number
(27:45):
three. This is a good spotfor us to take a short break and
we'll be back to finish up thishere in just a couple of seconds.
All right, we're back, andPam is about to regale us with her
tail of number three on your list? Are we number two? I haven't
(28:11):
you got to give your number three? Yeah, you're cheating us, you're
trying to take it away. Okay, you know what, folks, Sorry
about that. I'm so enthralled withwhat they're saying. I don't even know
this is. This is how enthralledland with this conversation. I don't even
care about my opinions. I know, right, I know, right?
Well. My number three is theRebel Omelet snow Speeder aka the Rebel Armored
(28:34):
snow Speeder from the Empire Strikes backline. If you recall when we did the
Empire Strikes Back show years ago.I loved this toy and I call it
Rebel Omelet snow Speeder because I hada friend named JJ who, for some
reason, I couldn't say rebel armored. He would say Rebel Omelet snow Speeder.
But I loved this thing because ithad the guns at the front and
(28:56):
if you press the button, theywould they would pulsate back and forth and
lie up, and it looked likea Coca Cola slurpie, the color that
I can describe it as as aCoca Cola slurpee. And it has the
grappling hook in the back that willdetach from it. The cock pit opens
up obviously, and you can puttwo figures in, you know, back
to back, and it's just agreat, great toy. It's It's in
(29:17):
a pretty good scale too, forthe figures and everything. And the thing
that I love the most about thisis the box. And I still have
the box of mine. There weretwo boxes, one with a blue sky,
one with the kind of a pinkishpurple sky. I had the one
with the pinkish purple sky, andthat shade of pink and purple just makes
me feel like a kid again anytimeI see it. The Asoka series,
it's airing right now. The firstor second episode, there were some some
(29:40):
X wing fighters flying and they wereusing the same that same hue that they
used in the seventy seven film, and I just paused it. We're in
the middle of show and I justpaused it and just looked at it.
I was like, I'm a kidagain. I'm six years old all over
again. Something about that color andso the color on this box art just
makes me feel like a kidding. It takes me back to that Christmas morning
and nineteen eighty eighty one whenever itwas when I got it, and uh,
(30:03):
and I remember that was the toythat my dad scared me because I
came back into the bedroom to showmy parents what Santa Claus had brought me,
and my dad said, you needto go back in there. I'm
going to throw that against the wall. I said, okay, fine,
I'll go back in here and I'llmake Yeah, you know he did not
suffer children well, but yeah, the rebel armored snow Speeder. There's there's
not enough good things I can sayabout it. I could talk about it
(30:26):
all night long, but I won'tbecause we're now to our number two toys.
So, Pam, you're about toregael us, as I was saying
when we came back from the break, you're about to regel us with your
number two. Yes, and itis also along the same lines as the
Etches sketch kind of, and it'sthe spirograph. Nice lasted here algebra for
(30:52):
fun. She's not joking, folks, But I did fail geometry in high
school. That's weird because you known c Ice geometry, but I failed
algebra. So together we're almost likea whole persons. But I but I
absolutely love this toy. When Istarted making the list and this made it
(31:15):
made number two, I actually wentonline to see if I could if they
were even still available, which Iwas pretty sure that they were, but
was able to find one on Amazonand bought it. It's it's a smallish
set. It's in a collector's tenand I have yet to play with it
because you know, life, butyeah, but it is. It's still
the counter, ready to be tobe played with. It hasn't been stocked
(31:37):
away, stored away anywhere. It'sside out of mind. I see it
every time I passed the counter. So yeah. Oh, my brother had
a spirograph and I loved that thing. It was so cool. And you
were saying, you mentioned that itwas you thought it was kind of based
on the Fibonacci sequence, and Isaid, I've always thought that, and
then I had to preface that bysaying, well, ever since I learned
what the Fibonacci sequence was, I'vealways sort of assumed Yeah, and there's
(32:00):
a lot of math that goes intoall of it. Yeah, so cool,
Taylor. Did you have a spirographwhen you were a kid or have
you ever played with one? No, but I've played with the knockoff brands
of it. I've made some somepieces off that, but I've never actually
have touched an actual spirography graph.I think, yeah, I think I've
(32:22):
played with. It was like pinpen pin and gear spy or something like
that. It's like pretty bad.You can tell because the box said generic
generic toys and knew what it remindsme of. They used to have these
at the art fair in Paris. It was it was you would put a
(32:44):
card down and it would start spinningand you would just drop paint on there.
That's I always get that and aspirograph confused. But the spirograph actually
is much cooler because you can domore with it. I'm with you,
very cool spirographs. Spirograph is verycool. All right, Taylor, what
about you? What is your numbertwo? All right? So my number
two is actually it's a It wasa Christmas toy that I got from my
(33:07):
uncle Nan. I told you theygave the best toys, they really did.
This thing also caused a big riffin the family with you know,
why did you get them? That? It's too much? But it was
from the later end of the Joe'sand it was the gigantic. I mean
this thing was probably like two anda half feet long, Cobra condor with
(33:30):
the arrow viper. Yeah, thatwas the R seventy one ship right,
No, No, this was theIt was the White Fighter that broke into
two jets. Okay, I gotyou. Sorry. The night Raven is
what I'm thinking about the night.Yeah, you're thinking the night I had.
This one was and I always wantedthat one, but I ended up
getting the Condor that had the swiftforward wings, had like an air fowl
(33:54):
with a turn that would turn andlike shooting all different dress. The thing
was so cool because when it brokeapart, the detail and the engines on
each one. As they broke apart, you could see like connector rings and
stuff. But they had also managedto put a little fan on one of
the jets, and then on theinside they kind of sculptured a fan on
(34:15):
the inside of the other one,the long one, the front one had
a turn intake that you would turnwith your finger and it would drop seven
gigantic bombs, and then it hadthe two missiles that could flip off.
And then the other side had twotrays on each wing that you would slide
(34:36):
this little adjuster and it would dropall seven bombs at once, like just
one after another, so you couldjust like carpet bomb like a whole like
joe section, and then they eachone of them had their own series of
landing gear that was like oversized landinggears with rubber wheels and all turnable with
(34:57):
like plated armor piece this over thelanding gear so it would like tuck into
the ship nice and meat. Youwouldn't see it. And this thing was
incredible, and like I said, when you put it together, it is
huge. It's like a foot anda half or so, maybe two foot
wide, about two and a halffeet long from nose to tell it was,
(35:19):
it was gigantic. Yeah, thatwas late enough in the line that
I don't when when you say it, I don't immediately obviously didn't immediately think
of what it was because I wasthinking of the Night Raven. But yeah,
that is awesome. So why whydid your dad get upset when they
would give you expensive time? It'smoney, no idea. I just remember
my family's word. I remember themfighting a lot. Okay, out of
(35:43):
everything, I am spoiled. Imean, but it's it's weird because I
mean they still fight now with thefamily. I'm like, and you know,
like like I showed up to familyreunion not too long ago, and
I was like, hey, everybody, and I was like, you
know, talk to everybody and jumpingfrom table to table, and everyone else
(36:05):
is like, oh, we gottastay away from them. You know.
It was like, what was itfrom, like Romeo and Juliet, the
MoU and the Monogus. Yeah, they're like just separated, like we don't
talk to them, like, andI'm jumping between everyone and You're just trying
to keep the keys and getting poisonedeverybody. Very cool, So yeah,
(36:30):
very good choice. That's the Cobra, the Condor, the Cobra Condor.
Yeah, Cobra Condor. Very cool. All right, Well, oddly enough,
my number two is also a Joetoy, and uh, anybody who
remembers any of our Joe discussions iswhat surprised you? Mine is the Killer
Whale the hovercraft. Oh yeah,if you remember that show I talked,
(36:51):
I probably talked about that for halfan hour. Now. This was one
of those toys that I just coveted, kind of like the ad at Walker,
the Millennium Falcon, all that Ijust wanted one of these, and
it was one I didn't get fromSanta Claus. My brother, my parents,
my mom bought it, but putmy brother's name on it, and
so I remember opening it and Ijust mauled him because I was so happy
(37:12):
to get it. And if you'renot familiar, A, it's a hovercraft,
so that's cool. It would floatin water yea. And it also
had these little wheels underneath it,so it looked like it was, you
know, hovering across the land.It had a motorcycle with it that you
could take out. It had likea reconnaissance like a little mini boat.
(37:34):
You could a sled, thank you, a sled that would come out.
How all sorts of guns had areally cool figure. His name was his
name Cutter. I think it wasCutter was a coastguard guy. He had
like an orange life jacket, likebaby blue shirt, dark blue pants,
and he had a cap and amustache. Looked like a coastguard guy.
(37:55):
But man, and I wish Icould. I can never remember what the
acronym whale stands for. It wasdumb, but it was the killer whale.
And that's one of those toys.I don't think. I didn't hang
onto it because it was too big, and I don't know what happened to
it, but that's one I wishI still had. I would never buy
another one because I have nowhere todisplay it there cost prohibitive and it's one
(38:17):
that I would just want to playwith, but I just I don't have
room for it. But that theKiller Whale is that's one. It's number
two. I was as surprised asyou guys are when it was at how
my list. I was like,no, it's it's got to be number
two. That is, in myopinion, one of the best toys ever
created for any line, by anycompany at any point in history. It's
(38:39):
it's really good. If I rememberthe acronym, and I'm not going to
look it up right now, butit's more fun if you do. If
you do. If you do lookit up, but you need to yell
at me do it when I'm notonline. I believe it was like water
water, Hovering, Amphibious land Enforceror something like that. Something like that.
Yeah, something they were really atthat point. Yeah, yeah,
(39:01):
Killer would just say that's his codename, right. Yeah. The Killer
Wheel Killer Whale is a is akiller toy. It's almost it's almost a
place set and vehicle in one.It really is. It is and I
loved it, and you could youcould store figures in it too, because
there was there was an in themiddle it was open up. There was
(39:22):
a hatch you could open up.You could just shove figures in there,
so it almost as kind of acarrying case too. It also had a
deck area, well not a deckarea, but it had an area that
would open up where you could putfigures to drive it, and then outside
a top deck where you could puta captain to look out. Yeah,
exactly. It was stacked. Itwas a cool piece, and it had
the propellers in the back and everythingthat would push it along, kind of
(39:44):
like the water Moccasin was like thesmaller version of it for Cobra. Right.
So yeah, Killer Whale is mynumber two. So before we get
to our number ones, this iswhere we do our honorable mentions. So,
Pam, I thought you said youhad one. Yeah, it's a
weird one, but you know,it was a toy. I had one,
and as a kid, I'm justintrigued by the concept and how popular
(40:06):
this, this toy and air quoteswas and it's the pet rock. I
mean, the marketing on that thingwas insane. It made more than a
million dollars in less than a year. Yep, I mean, I'm writing
(40:27):
on my million dollar idea and justyou know, you know, I can't
guess I can't do the pet rockbecause it's been done. But yeah,
right, so yeah, I justpeople went crazy over We watched every year.
Several years ago, the History Channeldid a series of four episodes called
Christmas through the Decades, starting withthe sixties. They did four episode sixty,
seventies, eighties, and nineties, and it's the seventies episode when the
(40:50):
pet rock shows up and they dothis whole spiel about it, and they
talked about how they got Yeah thatfirst year, it made it made the
guy a million dollars. It wasa rock. You put it in a
box and sell it for five bucks. And Taylor, did you ever have
a pet rock? I did not, I did, I didn't need it.
Did you have one? You didhave a pet rock? Was it
a Christmas present? Or did youbuy it with your own allowance or something?
I don't remember remember. Okay,that that's an awesome that's an awesome,
(41:14):
honorable mention. I love that youput that on the list. The
pet rock. Oh yeah, wehad one that I always thought was a
pet rock, but it actually wasa no, right, I said it
was a pet rock. It wasjust a rock my brother found in the
background. No, it was,it was a rock. It was.
It was a fake rock. Butit had a hole in it where you
could put a key and then acover so you could put it out the
(41:35):
hide a key thing. Then wewould put it out in in in front
of the house. No, Ididn't. Actually I should have, but
I didn't. So the pet rockMan. What a great what a great
honorable mention. Wow, I've yeah, we have to make this a regular
segment on the show. It's aTaylor Uh pick two of your honorable mentions.
(41:59):
I will you too. I'm gonnapick two of these five here.
Okay. One of them is thebatmobile from the Dark Knight collection from Kinner
Okay, which the one from likethe early nineties, Yeah, the one
actually from nineteen ninety the original one. It's probably the best one I think
it was made. And is thatthe one that's based on the eighty nine
(42:21):
movie or Okay? And then myother one, of course is the Evil
Horde slime pit of course. Yeah, it just didn't make the list because
it didn't have an action figure thatcame with it, right exactly, exactly.
So you like you like the thethe ninety Batmobile Dark Knight Batmobile better
(42:42):
than the Superpower's Batmobile. Yes,okay, I mean I like the Superpowers
Batmobile, but I liked the ninetiesand not not the toy best one,
not the Toy Bis eighteen, ofcourse, but the Kinner one with the
canopy, the pop out flame, that rollover machine guns, and the shooting
turbine missile. That one was myabsolute favorite. It's a reasonable choice.
(43:05):
It didn't it didn't click like theSuperpowers one did when you rolled it around
right, No, but when youpressed on the vents and then rolled it,
it would click a little bit becausethe flame would pop out and roll
in the back, so as youwere driving, the flame in the back
would spin. That's yeah, that'sreally cool. It's a cool to Like
I said, I just asked becauseyou hadn't mentioned it, and we all
(43:27):
know I love that Superpowers Batmobile. That No, that that's a great one.
Okay, very cool. My Ionly have one on my list,
and you'll notice there's no there hasn'tbeen any mention of Mask on my list,
and Mask is my second favorite toyline of all time. The reason
so My honorable mention is a slingshot, the mask swing shot, the
mask sling shot. And I hada hard time going between this one and
(43:50):
the not the Firecracker, Yes,yeah, with Hondo, with Hondo McClane,
Yeah that's yeah, the firecracker. But but the sling shot, it's
very basic. All all it isyou press a button the sides it's it's
an RV and the r the sidesof the RV pop down and there's a
(44:13):
jet that pops up like a minijet and it takes off. But I
loved it. It looks so cooland again it it looks like a vehicle
you could just drive around town. Most of the mass vehicles in their regular
form you can kind of tell whatwas going on with them. This one
you really couldn't because it just foldedup. But the other thing, the
ACE ACEH I can't remember who theAce. Something that came with it had
(44:37):
like a bomber jacket like the fuzzylapels, which I always thought was really
cool. And the sling shot wasthe one that I pined after for a
long time before I finally got it, so and I still I do have
a sling shot now that I foundI think I bought it on eBay.
The problem is it's one of thosethen one of the one of the panels
doesn't quite stay up. You haveto kind of hold them together. But
(45:00):
yeah, like I said, that'sand that's the only reason it's not on
my list is because it is prettybasic and the rest of these I just
have such a strong connection to that. I just I had to have mask
represented, but I couldn't find aplace on my list for it for obvious
reasons. So yeah, that bringsus to our number one. So,
(45:22):
Pam, what is your number onetoy of all time? Before I tell
you, I have to say thatthe fact that both Taylor and Jeff can
remember so many specifics about when theygot their toys and what year it was,
and what the holiday was it wasa birthday or Christmas or you know,
(45:43):
things like that just amazes me becauseI know I had toys, and
I know I played with them whenI got them sometimes when I was a
kid, But this one I rememberexactly. I was six years old and
(46:04):
there was a variety show on atthe time that I absolutely loved and I
wouldn't miss. And this was wellbefore DVR, so you know, I
waited for it to come on TV. But I got this for my sixth
birthday, and the surprise was spoiledbecause I had wanted it forever and I'd
(46:29):
been telling my parents that I wantedit, and my brother and sister got
a wild hair that they were goingthey were mad at me or something.
I don't remember these specific circumstances, but they spoiled the surprise and told me
what I was getting for my birthday. And it was a Donny Osmond.
(46:50):
I'm not going to call it anactually Donny Osmond, you know, doll?
How white were the teeth? Idon't I don't remember, had no,
I don't think it had a drawstring. It had the skinny microphone,
you know, the purple lemon jumpsuit, the hair, but I I
(47:13):
loved it, and then I remembergetting mad when I opened it and they
actually did spoil the surprise, andI threw it at one of them.
I'm sure, oh no, butit didn't. You know, he was
resilient, so you know his teethbroke, his fall, his teeth and
em so yeah that that that's mynumber one, and it's number one,
(47:36):
not because it's better or worse thananything else. It's it's the one that
I remember the exact memory of ofof getting it right. And you've been
a Donny Osman fan ever since youOkay, so I'll ask you both and
I Pam, I'm pretty sure youhave. Have you seen the weird Al
White and Nerdy video that he's dancingaround behind him? Taylor? Have you
seen it? I have not?Okay, Well go watch it. Anybody
(47:59):
listening, go watch and you justlook up weird Al White and Nerdy.
They asked Donny Osman to come inand before they started filming that, he's
like, what do you want meto do? Is like, I don't
know, just dance around. Andhe's dancing around behind weird Al and at
one point he comes up too weirdAl, and Weird Al during the rehearsal
actually started broke character and started laughing. And if you can make weird Al
laugh, you're doing something right. It is ridiculous. It's like the whitest
(48:22):
thing you've ever seen. It's amazing, it's amazing. I had a newfound
respect for Donny Osman after I sawthat. So great, great, great
choice for number one. All right, Taylor, So now you have to
top that with your number one, mine's gonna be boring. I'm gonna go
and tell you guys. Yeah,I mean, at this point you might
(48:43):
as well just click off the thing. I mean, we can't write,
how can I follow that? Weleave pet Rock leading into Donny Osman.
I'm donna, I'm out. Ican't do it anymore. But I'll go
ahead and tell you just just foryou know. Yeah. So I remember
(49:06):
when I bought this, so backin the day. This was more like
you know, end of high school, and you know, I was going
and buying like clearance toys all thetime from KB Toys before they went out
of business. And I loved doingthat because for me, I like,
you know, being able to checkout the toy, look at the engineering,
and you know, admire for whatit is. And so Playmates had
(49:29):
been doing a whole bunch of StarTrek stuff that had been on discount,
and I had a few of thesethings, and you know, I liked
Star Trek because I grew up withit and I had come across this one
set and I loved it, andsome for some reason I ended up like
selling it or I can't remember whathappened, but it was one of those
(49:50):
that as soon as I got ridof it, I kicked myself for like
ten years until I found another oneand got one for like my birthday.
And it was used and the stickerswere backwards. But I worked so hard
to get those stickers fixed because Iabsolutely love the set. It is from
Star Trek and it's the classic partof the series. It's a Shuttlecraft Galileo
(50:15):
with the Jim Kirk with the standarduniform set. I remember when you got
that. Yeah, yeah, it'sprobably one of them. I mean it's
not even the scale, but it'sprobably one of my It has to be
my top number one toy of alltime. Like, I would take that
and abandon everything else if I hadto. It is pretty dark cool.
(50:37):
Yeah. What do you think itis about that toy though, that that
just kind of makes it hold sucha special place in your heart. Simplicity,
simplicity, but you know, childishdetail that just makes it. It
doesn't need like sounds like because youknow, the next generation's got sounds and
rolling wheels and all this stuff.I mean, this thing is simple.
(50:59):
It is a just a shell withan opening canopy, a sliding door,
a little ramp. I mean it'sgot a lot of movable parts to it,
but it's just so simple and yetretro and it reminds me of watching
Star Trek with my parents, likewhen I was a kid and wanting like
Jim Kirk action figures that you know, at the time, we never had
(51:22):
it because there was a three andthree quarter ranch, but you could never
find them anywhere, like the Urdleor I can't remember the other company that
had them for a while, butwas it, Mum. It might have
been Rimco, but we never foundthem, you know. And then and
then next Generation came out with thethree three quarter ranch, but you never
could find the Shuttlecraft and so itwas like one of those where I never
(51:44):
had them until Playmates started putting itout. And when when I got it,
I remember just sitting there like inawe of this thing. You know.
I was like I wasn't really playingwith toys and my you know,
high school age, but I rememberjust actually like playing with it, like
enjoying it for what it was andlike really like kind of getting that toy
(52:05):
vibe out of it. And sometimesthey'll pull it off the shelf now and
still play with it because I enjoyit that much, and I found a
spock that has the same sort ofuniform that has supplies, and so I
will put him with Kirk and theyfly around and do missions. Nice,
very nice. Yeah, And soit's not from me on number one.
But folks, I just want totell you if you're hearing something that sounded
(52:25):
like a slee stack or something. We're recording in the living room right now,
and Margot has started wandering around andshe's breathing. So if you hear
anything that again sounds like a sleestack from Land of the Loss, that's
just my little dog trying to breathe. She's very congested. She hasn't blown
a bubble out of her nose yettoday, but I'm waiting for it.
So so, Taylor, I'm gonnaask you if you had to guess what
(52:51):
my number one toy of all timeis, I'll just say what toy line?
Do you think it's from Star Wars? Okay, Ken our Star Wars?
Yes, so you're correct on that. Do you have a guess about
which toy it might be? Ibelieve it might be the Oh goodness,
was it the Rebel Transport? No, it's not the Rebel for the Millennium
(53:14):
Falcon. No, it is notthe Milinnium Falcon either, but both both
reasonably guesses it is a smaller figure, smaller toy. It is the the
best pen Han Solo action figure.Pam is saying she knew. Sorry,
I should have given you a chanceto answer, Pam, I apologize.
I should have given you a chanceto answer. Anybody who's listening to the
show. Anybody who knows me knowsI've got one on card up in my
(53:36):
living room so that I can seeit anytime I want. I love everything
about this figure. It is tome the best version of Han Solo that
we ever got, even though itdoesn't look as much like him as maybe
some of the other figures do.I don't even mind that he's got the
same color boots as his pants, and that they don't really match what's in
the movie. But the jacket isthat dark navy blue, his shirt is
(54:00):
that sort of off white with alittle bit of a blue hue to it.
His hair is on point, hisface again doesn't look a lot like
Harrison Ford, but it was nineteeneighty What do you want from from Kenner?
Right? But this this toy,and again it's the only one I
ever got to buy it buy twicebecause my mom knew how much I liked
it. When I broke the armoff of mine, my brother blued it
back on, but he glued itback on sticking straight out so we can
(54:22):
still sit down in the minium Falcon, which made perfect sense. I don't
fault him for it at all.But my mom did allow me to get
another one to replace it, andI still and again I have I have
one now and I still have oneloose that I carry on with me all
the time as well. It's inreally good shape that I got probably you
know, fifteen twenty I actually itwas twenty years ago, twenty twenty one
years ago. But every you know, like I said, if you know
(54:45):
me, Hansel is my favorite characterof all time. Harrison Ford is my
favorite actor. Empire Strikes Back ismy favorite movie, So it's my favorite
actor playing my favorite character in myfavorite movie. Of course, that's my
favorite toy of all time, right, I love everything about it. I'm
not going to go on about itanymore. Everybody who's listening to the show
knows. I don't even I don'teven mind that he comes with a blaster
(55:05):
that looks nothing like any blaster whoever used in the movie. For whatever
reason, I gave him one oflike the best been blasters. Yeah,
well you you you don't have toso that. Yeah, that is my
number one. So so Pam wasnot surprised. I should have given you
a chance to answer. I doapologize, but yes, yes, Harrison,
(55:28):
Pam may like Harrison Ford more thanI do, but just for different
reasons, probably some of the samereasons. It's true, It's very true.
You got me there. I dohave a bit of a crush on
him. So that's that's our that'sour our, our top five toys of
all time. Pam, thank youfor joining us. This is this is
not even not necessarily your podcast debut, but it is your Marvin Dog Media
(55:49):
debuts. So welcome. I hopeyou enjoyed it. Taylor, I will
give you a chance now to readoff the rest of your honorable mentioned list.
I don't comment, I just wantI want to give you a chance
to read the names of the toysthat you have on your list, all
right, Redland from in Humanoids, the Roton from Masses Universe, tex Hex
from Brave Star Killer b from theTeens, Mutant Ninja Turtles and I can't
(56:15):
read that last one. You getso excited. He could read his Zonnana,
writing, oh, oh, theis it? Oh there it is
Indiana Jones and the Ark of theCovenant from the Hasbro Indiana Jones line.
