(00:15):
Welcome to Talking Toys with Taylor andJeff, where we go back in time
to discuss our favorite toys, onetoy line at a time. Hello,
and welcome to Talking Toys with Taylorand Jeff Action Figure Exclusive. I'm Taylor
(00:36):
and I'm Jeff. And it's it'sthe last show, folks. It's the
last of the Kenner Star Wars ActionFigure exclusive episodes. We we're here to
talk about Jack Face and then we'rein uncharted waters. I know it's uh
wasn't They also known as Yaki theYak No, that's how people call him,
(00:59):
Joe Campbell, or as Taylor said, the moral Borer Camel. I
said, no, the camel. It was the camel Camel. Taylor,
Well, that just shows like, because you know, I put that that
sort of part of my life sofar away from me. I don't remember
any of it. Right. Howlong has event since you smoked? Oh
god, it's been over ten years, because I don't think I was ever
(01:23):
around you when you did so,when we've known each other going on fourteen
years now. Yeah, but Ithink you just never smoked around me,
because you know, it's a disgustinghabit that I loathe yeah, And honestly,
at the time, I was probablytrying to get rid of it,
like it's yeah, it's the lastfew years I did not enjoy it if
(01:44):
and kiddos, if you're listening tothis, don't ever start smoking. It's
awful for you and it's really hardto break the longer you go. Yes,
it is. So. We wedebated whether or not we were going
to talk about Jack Face, becausehe was never really East in America.
Right. There were rumors that itwas sold in Canada, but we don't
(02:09):
have any definitive proof of that. But it was sold in the European market,
and I'm not sure exactly why wedidn't get it here. But that's
why when you find them now, they are so expensive and it is so
difficult to find one on the card. I have one of these in my
collection. It was the last ofthe figures that I was able to procure
(02:29):
for obvious reasons. How are youable to get it? I paid one
hundred and fifty hundred seventy five bucksfor it at a con Wow. Yeah,
I just I saved. I savedsome money for it. It was
it was the last one and Ineeded it. This is one of the
ones that the only reason I knowthat they'd never sold I knew before anybody
else did that they never sold himhere because this is I've told the story
I don't know how many times aboutmy mom calling up Kenner to try to
(02:50):
get the last four figures that Ineeded. This was one of them,
and they said, well, wenever actually produced him, so we only
have these other three. Interesting.Yeah, that's how that worked, and
we will eventually, folks come back, probably to the e Walks and Droids
figures, but we wanted to waituntil we talked about those on the main
show because as it stands now, there's really no reason for us to do
(03:14):
a show about the power of theForce Line because we talked about every single
figure and every single vehicle that wasproduced with these shows and with the bonus
shows for Patreonic over the years.True, but you know, we also
don't want people to get left outbecause we also have our top five out
of those. Well, that's true, that's true. So we got to
get Chris Irons on for that one. Yeah, come on, Chris,
(03:36):
but yeah, well it's you know, it's it's a problem is he's Eastern
time and he gets up at likefour in the morning as well. So
we're gonna have to do it likeon a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon
or something. We'll figure it out. But the folks, we're not here
to talk about that. We're hereto talk about yak Face. As I
said, yak Face was released onthe Power of the Force card in nineteen
eighty five, but was only releasedapparently in Europe. Let's talk a little
(03:57):
bit about his backing card. Ido have one of these on card,
but it's a gentle giant jumbo version, okay, but his backing card has
a picture of yak Face in jabason jobas sale barge, as pleasure barge,
whatever you want to call it.And this one looks pretty accurate based
on the photo. You know, obviously they have trouble doing like the whispy
(04:18):
hair or whiskers, but I feellike it's a pretty good likeness. And
I like the sort of hot pinkbacking behind the figure and the name plate
I think works pretty well. Yeah, I did too. It's this photo
is really hard to tell, butyeah, it's dark, it is dark
(04:39):
with Yeah, the hot pink isnice and it really makes him pop out.
This is Uh. What's interesting aboutthis is that this was they were
saying it was a Canadian card, even though it was predominantly done in Europe.
This is also one of the lastfew that had a coin with it
as well, because we didn't necessarilytalk too much about some of the figures
(05:00):
had coins and some of them didn't. But this would have been the last
of the Collector's coins that went notas well along with the Yeah, all
of all of the Power of theForest figures got released with a coin,
and this would have been like oneof the last ones. So if you
were looking for a complete set, unfortunately, the only way to get that
is to import one of these.Yeah. Oh, I wonder did they
(05:25):
do? You know if they everdid any books for the um for the
coins the coins. Yeah, theydid, But I'm not sure if there
was a place for yak face ornot. Okay, yeah, I'm not
sure. I would hope not becausethat would just, you know, break
everyone's mind. You know, thereare our little collector of minds. It
would just break them. So figureitself. Let's talk about him. He's
(05:46):
got a Well, we'll start atthe top and work our way down like
we always do. The head sculpton this one obviously is very unique.
He is he looks more like acamel than a yak to me, of
course, I've seen more camels andavyaks in my life, so I may
defer to you on that one.But he looks like a cross between a
(06:06):
yak and like a Jim Henson muppetbecause he's got these whiskers that come down,
but then his head slopes back andhe looks like he has no hair
on top of his head and itcurved around and is that supposed to be
an ear or is that supposed tobe horns on either side of his head?
So they're either actually had to pullup a picture of Yak face was
(06:29):
just also known as Salt Marie. But he does so the round portions are
actually ears. He's got these almosthuman like ear lobes that come off the
top of his head, and thetop of his head is bald, so
he is lacking hair on the topof his head, his ears and eyebrows,
and all of his hair is goingto be in his whiskers like a
(06:53):
little bit of mustache. And aroundthe chin he's got hair there as well,
and that's it. But he doeslike looking at the actual um creation.
He he looks like a camel, like a humanized camel. Yeah.
I'm not sure whether I'm with yackface instead of camel head or something.
(07:15):
Who knows, jack face probably soundsbetter. Yeah, And then you know,
coming down the front, like sothat head sculpt we we're talking about,
like talking to the back of hishead, it is. It's it's
kind of textured a little bit umnot terribly much, but it's textured.
And there's a scene going down theback of his head, which I assume
is just part of the plastic.Yeah. And then you've got some some
(07:36):
hair textured on the bottom of theback of his head. Then you come
around the front and we've got thisvery long nose that comes down and these
two nostrils that are just it's flat. Everything is flattened. His eyes are
black. Yeah. And then Inoticed on each side of his face he's
got these bumps just below his eyes. Yeah. They look to be symmetrical.
(07:59):
And you decide, how are youseeing that? Seems me? Yeah,
I'm looking. They are not symmetrical. One side has four bumps,
one has three. Okay, they'reasymmetrical, but they're just like like skin
bumps. You know, he's gotanother one on his right side, kind
of up by his eyebrow. Oneof the things I love about this head
scult is the like you said, the texture on the back of the head
(08:24):
where it kind of divots moves down, but where the spine would be going
back into the head where it curves. He almost has like small divots of
skin fold where it's almost like hishead is having to like kick back a
little bit to keep upright. Andso the skin on the neck is actually
(08:45):
folded in several spots along the bottomtraveling up to the head. Oh,
I see that. Yeah, that'sinteresting. Yeah, and yeah, and
I like that. We've got we'vegot some hair going down the side.
But then, like you said, his neck, Yeah, he's got those
folds like he's been leaning over andthe head just sits I guess on a
post. His neck is very, very, very thick, and it sits
(09:09):
on his collar, which is afurred collar, which is weird because it
looks like it's a furred collar thathas a piece that goes all the way
almost like he's wearing a giant necktie. Right, it's like a Fred Flintstone
necktie. Yes, right, sothat one and I had to look up
because I was like, what isthis he does have? It's a buzzy
(09:31):
collar. It's not necessarily a collarthat wraps around him. It is the
inside of his tunic, like thetop collar portion, and it goes down
on the insides. It's called likebuzzy inside. So all the fuzziness of
the collar and the inside is whatis building this buzziness that Kenner has interpreted
(09:54):
almost as into a collar, butit's actually a part of his tunic,
so it's part part of what he'swearing. It's just it's a sewn onto
it basically if it were real.Yeah, from what I'm seeing here,
it looks like it is the insideportion of this tune. It kind of
turned out that's what I was thinkingas well. The only thing that's interesting
(10:15):
about it is if you look andit's it's for folks, it looks very
much like chebacco or you walk forcoming down from it. As it comes
down from where it would be likethe collar, it looks like there's a
pretty hard break where it keeps goingdown the center of his stomach. You
see what I'm talking about there?Yes, Yeah, do you think that's
supposed to be there or is thatjust something that they just some sort of
(10:37):
break that was randomly inserted there tomake it give it some texture. I
think that's a break that they justput in to kind of give a texture.
But I it's like one of thosewhere it's like, I'm not like
from the pictures I'm seeing there, that buzziness going down is not a part
of the outfit. So it's it'sweird because it's almost like something that they
(10:58):
like where it goes down onto histunic. It's almost like something they added,
Okay, yeah, just to makeit give it a little bit more
character, So it's not just onelong piece I think. Right. And
then talking about that tunic, it'sa really interesting color. It's sort of
a I feel like the one we'relooking at on Rebel Scum. I feel
(11:20):
like the sleeves are supposed to bethe true color of the tunic, and
it's sort of a it's a littledarker than than the head, like the
skin on his head and the hairand everything, but it's supposed to be
kind of a beige or a lighttan color. Right, yes, now,
Okay, so there is their productionstills that have a debate on this.
(11:45):
So for the most part, thetunic, the overwrap that he has
is that kind of beige color. So what you see is the tunic that
he has his shirt that kind ofbeige color or that kind of mustardy looking
color, that is the actual colorof his tunic in the movie. However,
(12:07):
there's shots of the actor I guess, sitting out on set with his
hand up kind of up on hishead, you know, and he's like
resting, and where the gloves go, the gloves go and stop to a
point where yes, the monster glovesfor Jack face, and then there's almost
(12:28):
a dark blue navy or almost blackshirt underneath. And so I'm thinking what
they're doing is that from the productionstills, he's not supposed to have necessarily
that much of an undershirt or it'snot really seen, but he does have
kind of this dark navy blue likethree quarter sleeve piece that comes down on
(12:54):
one set looks like the glove that'sover it. On the other set looks
like it fits over the glove. So it's kind of like mismatch, kind
of bizarre. Yeah, yeah, but there there is that blue um as
far as like the the kind ofpants, what you can see, and
then that part of the sleeve thereis some blue showing in the act.
Yeah, it's it's a dark navyblue. And I think it's good.
(13:15):
I think that works better than blackwould be with especially against the against the
tan, the light tan. Yeah, because it's almost in a way,
it's almost contrasting that that cool tone. Yeah. And again with the arms,
we've got really nice fold work atthe elbows, um, and the
cuffs are are are kind of foldedup, and and um and his shoulders
(13:35):
we've got we've got nice fold workwhere the tunic is coming down. And
what's interesting on the back. Iwant you to look at the back of
his tunic because on the front wetalked about the front of his tunic,
that the chest area, we've gotsome nice fold work coming down out of
the out of the furry stuff towhere it's kind of hanging. But if
you look around the back, yousee how it's frayed at the bottom.
(13:58):
Yeah, it's it's broken up up, um, almost like it's been ripped.
Yeah, that's weird because it wouldn'tbe that way on the front.
It seems like it should be thatway all the way around, right,
Yes, I agree it should bethat way all the way around. It's
that's one of those where it's likethe design on one end doesn't always match
(14:18):
with the other side, kind oflike the fur tie that goes down the
front um. That designs a littleodd. It's not, you know,
like the actual thing from the movie. And then the bottom of the tunic
is kind of rough and chopped up. But it's like that all the way
around the piece, and so itjust feels a little off. Actually it
(14:45):
does off, Yeah, it reallydoes. And uh and I can't figure
out why they would have made thatdecision on the fraying. I like it.
I think it's a nice touch. It keeps them from being too boring.
But it's but it's odd. Yeah, it's it's one of those where
it's like thinking about it. AndI mean, again, they might not
have had all the stills that theycould get in order to create this one.
(15:07):
But the the I keep calling ita tunic, it's more like a
cloak because it is actually long.I was looking at some some of the
other pictures here, and it's along, long piece. The bottoms are
fraid, but this goes almost allthe way down to his knees or ankles
in some areas. So it's likeone of those where they could have you
(15:28):
know, done like the cloak likethey would normally have done, or even
a soft goods and they didn't dothat with this one. Instead they cropped
it up and made it really short. Well, and you know, we
didn't get a lot of soft goodswith power of the force. We didn't
and which is which is odd,And it seems like that would have been
(15:50):
a good thing to do here. But I wonder if you know, they
kind of knew they weren't going itwas into the line, and they knew
they weren't going to get much distributionon it, so they just didn't bother.
I mean, we got a fewwhere where it counted, you know,
because we had was that I justmeaning this picture, this figure in
particular. Maybe they knew it wasn'tgoing to get distributed world wide. Who
(16:11):
knows, Yeah, who knows. It's it's odd. It's an odd,
odd choice. But it's one ofthose, you know, one of those
things that keeps people guessing. Iguess, so yeah, yeah, I
mean, and again it keeps peopleguessing, even on the fact of why
it wasn't even released in the States. I've always wondered that. Yeah,
I mean you figure if everything elsereleasing that would have been like that would
(16:37):
have just made sound. Yeah,I would love to talk to somebody from
Kenner who was in the room wherethat decision was made and figure out what
happened there. Could had just beenan oversight that simple. Um. So
back to the front, you know, below the what we're calling the tunic
in his crotchul area, that's wherethe navy blue starts. And then his
legs have these these navy blue pantsthat again match the sleeves, so it
(17:00):
almost makes it look like he's wearinglike a body suit under it, which
is odd. But regardless of whateverit is, we've got some really nice
fullwork, especially go get on theback of his legs, a lot of
really good fullwork coming out of theseat of it, and his at his
knees, the bins of his kneesand everything and going into his boots.
On the front, it's fairly smooth, but we got a little bit of
like subtle fold work there. AndI believe he has a pocket on his
(17:26):
left shin. Yes, there isa randomly like a cargo pocket. Yeah,
just kind of right at the kneeon the left outside area of the
leg. That's odd. Again, the the decisions on this one are just
leave me, leave me guessing,I guess, or designed to leave his
(17:48):
guessing. Yeah, because and youwouldn't necessarily have seen, like there's not
all the photos we get I've hadMark going to be on the cell bars
already hard to see, right, but even at that, like I don't
see anything referring to a pocket,So it just seems kind of like an
(18:08):
artistic take on on yak face here, right, Yeah, exactly. And
then we'll come back to his hands. I want to talk about the boots
first because it's almost look like moccasinsto me, do they to you?
They do? Yeah, it's almostlike a moccassin with some sort of frayed
tassel at the top. Yeah.I don't, Yeah, I don't.
(18:33):
Yeah, the tassels, it's likethey've got it's it's like they've got like
fringe all the way around them.Yeah. Oh French, thank you,
I was trying to remember what.Yeah, it is exactly like French,
and it's it's cutting away that itdips down in the front and look a
little bit like it's pointing down tohis shoes. But it's again one of
those things where it's like, youdon't really there's not any pictures of his
(18:59):
feet, so it's kind of like, again, I think this is the
area where they're taking a little bitof artistic license on on what they're seeing.
Um, I know, since then, you know a lot of the
face figures that they've done where theytry to go back to archives and look
it up. They've added that kindof fringe to the boots. But and
(19:21):
they're supposed to be boots, Ibelieve, but these really do look like
moccasins. They do, and it'sbecause of that, because it's the color
and the way those the fringe justkind of falls down over it and it
looks, you know, it's it'ssort of uneven and everything, so it
looks like it's sort of haphazardly done. And then it doesn't look like there's
really it looks like there's a soulthere, but it's not a really solid
(19:41):
soul, no on there. Yeah, those shoes are pretty soulless. But
but it's thinkin dah. But again, but but it's interesting and I like
and it's a different color it's ait's a darker, darker tan, sort
of light brown own. It's adifferent color than anything else we've gotten,
(20:02):
so we've got some and it's evendifferent than the fur, so we've got
lots of good variation in the colors. But I think it all works,
you know, the color scheme tome, for me works. His hands
are the most interesting thing to me, well, one of the most interesting
things about this figure, I think, because again this the skin looks to
be almost scaly. Yeah, andhe's got these huge like I can't tell
(20:26):
if they're supposed to be fingers orif he's just got like mits. They're
camel toes that have been turned intofingers. This is one of those where
I had to I had to reallylook at it and kind of kind of
figure out what in the world's goingon. But they are they are like
like camel hoofs, but they're morelike fingers. So the hoof the nail
(20:51):
part is long, like a likean actual like digit, and it looks
like they're bisected so that he canlike manipulate them. Yeah, the you
can. They're almost like two fingers, and the nut thumb, the thumb
is nail less, but the othertwo have like these big long camel style
fingernails on the end. It's veryweird. Yeah, it's really weird.
(21:18):
This is this is one of theweirder figures that we well, that we
didn't get, but that we thatthey produced for the line. Yeah.
Well, and it's one of thosethinking about it, like, um,
Return of the Jedi has got alot of very very strange creatures in it,
and they're just kind of following throughof what you know was in Return
of the Jedi. But I thinkback to like reuse and how weird you
(21:41):
know, reus hands are the bigyou know, small like sausage digits and
the big, you know, scalyalmost armadilla style hands and these like,
especially looking at the picture of theactual thing, these things are creepy looking.
And the toy kind of captures thathis fingers are creepy looking. They
(22:03):
are, especially this one. Hehelped, yeah, a little bit,
a little bit. And as faras his accessory, he comes with the
it's the the Skift Guard, uhSkift Guard battlestaff. So it's one that
it's a it's a repeat, it'snot even unique to him. And we
talked about it when we talked aboutweek way, it's the same the same
thing. He can hold it andthat was on the power of the force
(22:29):
card that that that came with. And uh, you know again, we
didn't even see him with it inthe movie, so I'm not sure why
they. I guess they thought heneeded one, but I'm not sure why
they decided to go with that one. Yeah, the only the um the
only thing that we see him inthe movie with as a cup full of
drinks. So maybe the reason whybecause if I remember, there's a supposed
(22:52):
to be a cut scene where it'slike Reease and I think Yack Base getting
a fight. It's almost like adrunk and brawl where they fight each other
and so they're slushing around with theirdrinks. So instead of promoting that's just
give them some weapons and be like, yeah, they're you know, they
help Java, and we're gonna leaveit at that right there, getting drunk
(23:15):
on a cell barge and you know, fighting each other, right, you
know, heaven forbid we show ourshow our characters drinking. Let's just give
them a weapon instead. Yeah, that's that's safe for kids. True,
Well, I could also imagine, like I was to their thame I was
like, well, that coup wouldhave to be small. But then I
think about like lay a sporting pistolfrom um from the hotel, and that
(23:37):
thing was like I had that thinglost down the drain within five seconds of
open. Yeah, absolutely to thebathtub. Yeah yeah absolutely. So Yeah.
So that's that's it for the figure. So let's let's talk then,
Taylor, what does what is yourfavorite feature about this toy? I really
like that head sculpts um That headsculpt is very nice. The features that
(24:00):
they were able to capture there, and they look incredible. That head sculpt
is is pretty spot on. Itis I really I like the head sculpt
Since you picked that, though,I'm going to say for mine is I
like the color scheme. I likethe fact that they went with the navy
blue instead of black, and theydid instead of giving them all just bige
(24:21):
all the way around. I likethe little splash of color and to me,
it just works this figure. Itgives them a unique look. And
you know what we've seen with Kennerbefore, they just they know how to
mix colors and match things, matchthings well, and I think it just
works with this character really really well. I agree, So what is your
(24:41):
least favorite feature about this toy,so my least favorite feature. And I
didn't even realize that until we startedbreaking the figure down. But that tear
the clothing and the back that bothersme. I feel like that should have
been brought down a little bit toshow that maybe it was something that had
been ripped over time. It thefact that it's almost even with the front
(25:03):
cut of the tunic, but thisis the only area that's kind of cut,
makes that jagged edge feel very, very odd and rather forced. Okay,
I can see that. I actuallykind of like that though, because
it tells a story. We don'tknow what the story is, but it
tells a story about the character, and I'm a big fan of that.
(25:27):
I think mine is the fact thatthey gave him the same the skiff guard
weapon, because it's it's just showsthat they didn't think that much into this
one and put that much thought intoit. Rather and you know, he's
on the sale barge. He's noton the skiff, so why would he
(25:48):
have that right? Just makes nosense to me. That that's the one
thing about this that seems lazy tome. I could see that, I
could definitely see that So what doyou think best exemplifies the ken raligne with
this toy? You know, forthis one, especially with that head sculpt,
it comes down to that detail ofwhat they're seeing and giving us.
Again, like really good sculpts thathave just the right amount of detail to
(26:12):
really sell this character. It's notoverdone, it's just the right amount,
and Kenner's known for that, andI think for me it's it's the head
sculpt is a good example of this. You know, here we're at the
end of the line, but theynever stopped innovating, They never stopped trying
new things. They kind of swungfor the fences with this guy in certain
(26:33):
respects, and I'm maybe that's whythey didn't release at State side. It
looks a little too weird even comparedto everything else. I don't know,
but it always just seemed odd tome that we never got it here in
the States. And it's a shametoo, because I think this is,
you know, it's a released overall, a really strong figure from Kenner.
Yeah, so is this toy cool? Yes? Yeah, I agree the
(27:02):
fact that it's hard to get,but yes it is. Yes, it's
very hard to get. You canget the Gentle Giant Jumbo in cheaper than
you can get the original three andthree quarter inch one. That's crazy to
think. It's wild. Yea,when Power the Force two came out,
I remember getting a gag face andbeing so excited because this is the first
time any of us were ever goingto get to hold this particular character that
(27:26):
had been, you know, overlookedfor so long. So I being such
a big deal. Agreed, agreed. Yeah, But but I didn't really
like that figure either, and we'lltalk about that at a later tight.
I'm sure. Yeah, it wasokay, okay, So folks, that'll
do it for this edition of ActionFigure Exclusive and will do it for the
(27:48):
Kenner Star Wars line periods. Sowe hope you've enjoyed this journey with us
over the last what almost ten years. Yeah, it's been let's see,
yeah, it's it would have beenyeah, like at least eight we started
this. Yeah, I don't know, it's been a while. So we
do, thank you, and we'regonna take some time. What we're gonna
do is we're gonna keep doing theMasters of the Universe shows Action Figure Inclusive.
(28:11):
We're going to take the rest ofthis season as we're calling it off
from this portion of it, sowe'll just have two shows a month for
the next couple of months, andthen later on in a year, we'll
come back with our next our nextAction Figure exclusive venture, which we are
excited to introduce. If we haven'talready already on the show, I don't
know if we've mentioned it or not, but we'll be back with more action
(28:34):
figure shows in the near future. All right, until then, for talking
to us with Taylor and Jeff ActionFigure Exclusive. I'm Taylor, I'm Jeff.
Remember they're not dolls, they're actionfigures, Action figures. You say
