Welcome to Talking Toys with Taylor andJeff, where we go back in time
to discuss our favorite toys, onetoy line at a time. Hello,
and welcome to Talking Toys with Taylorand Jeff. Action Figure Exclusive. I'm

(00:37):
Taylor and I'm Jeff. And ofcourse it's the Masters of the Universe flavor
of the show, because that's allwe got. Right now, we're here
to talk about two thousand X versionof Whiplash. Yeah, this will send
you to the hospital. This itwill put you in a neck brace and
send you the chiropractor. Now thereare there are there two versions of this

(00:59):
one. It looks like there aretwo versions and it's not just like a
repaint. Yeah, so okay, there's there's a color variation with these one
where it's not necessarily the figure thoughsome of the airbrushing is different from one
to the other. But the maindifference between these is that one has a

(01:21):
like a hand spear that's all incopper, and the one has a hand
spear that's copper and silver. Theneither one of them is more prevalent than
the other. Like the one Ihave is the it's got a copper handle
and then an actual like silver likeblade on the end of the sphere.
But they're other than that, they'rethe exact same. Okay, So it's

(01:47):
just it really is just kind ofa color scheme thing. I guess it's
just the just the widing of theone I'm looking at. Yeah, one
of them looks a little bit darkerthan the other because of the angle that
they've taken the picture, but they'rethey're the same, the same coloring.
It's not not anything different the thecolor scheme. Like if you look at

(02:10):
figure dash archive dot net, there'sa picture of him where one on the
left hand side is a lot howthe air brushing looks, but it's very
vibrant. But the actual color schemein person is more like the one on
the right. Just picture the muteda little bit more muted colors of the
right with the air brushing of theleft, and that's really the figure that

(02:34):
you get. Okay, yeat it. Okay, So let's talk then a
little bit. So you you havethis in your collection, correct, I
do have this one of my collection. Yes, this was This is one
of those when I when I wasable to get him, I was super
excited. He's actually probably one ofmy favorites out Like, I'm not a

(02:59):
big Whiplash fan, but he's probablyone of my favorite updates out of the
line because he's very simplistic. Butwhat they've done with him is just it's
beautifully rendered. It is an incredibleaction figure. Okay, Yeah, and
I and I agree. It's areally cool looking action figure. It looks

(03:22):
almost like a display piece rather thana toy, which a lot of these
did. Yes, so let's startat the top his head. He's got
this is the one that looks themost like a like a Disney villain.
To me, I could see thata little bit like something from Hercules.

(03:43):
I was thinking more something like theBlack Cauldron or something like that, something
a little more fantastical, see that. But he's got so the top of
his head, it looks like isthere like a fin, like a dark
green fin going across the top ofhis head. Yes, so he does
have a a fin on his head. He also has a pair of horns

(04:04):
that pop up near that head. But the fin goes down and kind of
works into a bit of plating onhis back, so he does have like
some some kind of backplates in thisfin runs down the gamut of his head
into kind of the it's almost likecrocodile style of the plates that run from

(04:29):
his head down into his body andonto his back right, got it?
Yeah, And he speaking of goingto his back, he's he's got plates
like armor plating kind of all overhim, and he gets reptile skin,
but it does look more like platingthan it does skin to me very much.
Yeah, it has kind of aribcage sort of vibe to it,

(04:50):
especially on his chest. So he'sbig and barrel chested, and out of
the figures, he's probably between himand Ramman, he is probably the biggest
figure out of the line as faras like bulk or just having like one
in your hand. He's a reallybig. Yeah, he's thick as the

(05:12):
kids. He is thick. Nowcoming down, like going back to talking
about his his his his head, the tip at least his the front part
of his head. His face isthis is what makes him look like a
Disney villain to me, because he'sgot this like they've sculpted his brow where
it's like permanently furrowed. His eyeslook to be like yellowish orange with like

(05:33):
black pupils, and then he's gotan underbite, and he's got like is
like six tusks coming up from theunderbite, and then these huge ears that
take up over like three quarters thesize of his head. That's what makes
him look like a Disney villain tome, I could see that. Now,

(05:54):
how does this compare? How doesthis compare to the original figure that
we got in the nineteen eighties. So the original figure, Oh, I
just hold on, I'm gonna goback, because I just had a picture
of the two side by sides Icould look at him. The original is

(06:14):
so okay. The original has,you know, the basic villain arms that
have the fins on it. Hehas the villain legs that have the fins
on it, and then the brokentoes with the blue boots. And then
the head was very similar, thoughit was the fin on it was a
lot bigger on the head. Andthen he had like one tuss that went

(06:39):
up and then two that went downon each side. So he's got very
triangular teeth and and less of aburrow brow, more of kind of just
a basic brow with yellow eyes.He doesn't have all the scale work that's
on him. And then of coursehis his loincloth is just a basic loincloth

(07:00):
belt with the furry underwear, butthe color scheme was the same. Where
you had the kind of the bodywas the buzz off body, so you
had the kind of armored looking bodyand dark green. Yeah, the lime
green arms. You had a limegreen head with the dark fin that matched
the body. On the back ofthe body, you had the rubber tail

(07:23):
that came down, and then youhad the lime green legs with the blue
underwear and an orange belt. They'vekind of carried that same design over except
you know, took the armored body, the scaled body and worked it into
the design on the entire body asskin and just took the olive drab and

(07:46):
the lime and kind of mixed thetwo colors together airbrushed it to make it
look more realistic like skin. Andthen the head wise they lowered, like
they made the eyes smaller, thethin smaller, made the ears bigger,
and the mouth broader in order tomake him look more like a brute.

(08:07):
Yeah, and that makes sense, and you can see that. And I
really really like the updates that they'vedone here. The other thing that I
think is interesting is on his shoulders. He's got these blocks on his shoulders.
What are those supposed to be?Is that just supposed to be like
like it's it's basically like what youthink of as as reptile scales that have

(08:28):
built up, like the kiten thathas built up and severed into like almost
like horns in a way. Sohe's got big blocks of horns that are
coming out of his skin along it'sit's prevalent on his shoulders, tops of
his arms, and then when yougo to his back, his back has
a lot of scale work that lookslike it kind of has that same vibe

(08:54):
where it has those horn pieces thatrun down his back and it looks like
a crocodile, right, But they'revery symmetrical, so they almost look they
almost look man made, yes,but they are supposed to be natural.
They are a part of his skin, right, Yeah, they're definitely they
look organic, but the shape ofthem everything is so symmetrical that it,

(09:16):
yeah, it almost looks manufactured, but it's it's like you said, it's
really cool. The other thing it'sinteresting is you go down his back and
all the skin on his back isthat same dark green down to his waist,
but on his front, he's gota lot of really bright green.
Almost looks like armor, and itlooks a little bit like a rib cage

(09:37):
that's just sitting too high across hischest and then his abs and surrounding his
abs. It's all this like brightgreen. What is that supposed to represent?
Do we know? It's just differentskin tone, like when you think
of like, you know, we'rewatching Temple of Doom the other day and
there's like the crocodiles or the yeah, the river crocodile right there, there's
there, Yeah, there's their softunderbelly is a little a little bit brighter

(10:01):
and then the backs are darker, and this kind of has the same sort
of you know, crocodile sort offill. He he reminds me a little
bit of of Killer Croc when youwhen you break down the design of him,
like Killer Croc from like the latercomics, when he's very much more
like crocodile like and his skin's bustedup and he has that kind of crocodile

(10:24):
filling coloration film. This reminds mea lot of that. Okay, yeah,
I think you're right. I thinkthat's probably uh, that probably is
the explanation for that. But Ido think it's interesting that that it does
look a little bit like a ribcage, especially across his chest. Yeah,

(10:46):
and then of course we've got youknow, he's muscular like a normal
like a regular he man figure wouldbe, but it's it's it's a different
because of the scales and everything thatwe've got, which is really cool.
Yeah, and so off, likeeach of the muscles are a little more
defined because of the way that theplates and the scale work work in there.

(11:07):
And what I love is where hecomes down, like where he's got
all the muscling along the back andthe chest, when you get down to
the waist, it cuts in andthen almost has a little bit of a
fat flab where it goes down intohis belt. So it's like it still
makes him feel like like hefty, but still kind of super chunky, like

(11:31):
he still has a little bit ofheftiness and weight to him. You kind
of see. Absolutely, Yeah, absolutely, yeah, cool, it's it's
cool and it makes it look real. Yeah. Now let's talk about his
arms then, because you mentioned he'sgot the he's got the spikes going down
his shoulders and then once you getdown from his shoulders, we start to
get a little more airbrushing of thelighter green, and then his forearms and

(11:54):
his hands are all that light green, and then he's got these really cool
and each arm he's got these reallycold dark blue or they're dark blue,
right, the little bracelets that he'sgot, yeah, they are dark blue
and the bracelets. Real quick,I want to jump in on the bracelets.
So hands, legs, and beltall have a square wave shape,

(12:18):
which is very Grecian or like whatyou think of as ancient Greek sort of
look. And I love it becauseit breaks into these like square wave pattern
motifs that go completely around the bandand look almost like Grecian, Like it's
metal, but it's done in thisreally dark kind of navy blue. Yeah.

(12:43):
No, it's it's very cool andit's a nice offset to that green.
Yeah. I think if it wasblack it would look too harsh and
to drab, but by giving itthis this dark blue, this like navy
blue color, he gives it alittle bit of pop. And you read
that design is at the go ahead. I was gonna say they're sticking with
that color scheme because you know, with the original figure against the lime green,

(13:09):
they had dark blue boots and thenthe dark blue loincloth so they're kind
of sticking with that same color schemebut just making a little bit more like
Madden and Dole. It's a littlemore toned down than as vibrant as the
vintage was, but it's still verymuch is paying homage to what came before

(13:30):
with that color scheme. It hasn'tchanged too much, right, But but
you're absolutely right. The designs onthe do look very it's kind of a
Grecian vibe to it, so Ireally dig it. And then you know,
going down each arm, they're they'revery similar, the arms are.

(13:52):
But what I do like is thatwe talked about it with one of the
figures we talked about recently, wherethe muscle on the leg looked very squared
off. The muscles in his arms, his biceps look very squared off.
But I don't mind it because againhe's got that reptilian look, so that
along with the airbrushing, kind ofcuts that a little bit. But it

(14:13):
is interesting that his forearms are biggerthan his upper arms. They stick out
more. Yeah. Well, Imean, and I guess like if if
I was to think about him ascrocodile cave dwelling person like, he'd probably
be a massive swimmer. I meanhis hands are each hands as big as
his head. You know, he'sjust a small minded but he is,

(14:39):
you know, a force to bereckoned with. So he's got huge hands,
huge four arms, you know,a smaller bicep. He probably does
more with his forearms than any otherpart as far as swimming or crawling.
So yeah, it kind of makessense for him to be this kind of
a brute. It does I wish. I will say they've done something that

(15:03):
I don't like. Here, oneof my pet peeves on his right hand,
they've just hollowed out a circle.Instead of making it actually look like
he's arm is holding something, right, they just hollowed out a circle.
I do not like that. Ithink it's silly. I don't know why
they did it. I will say, though, and having the figure,

(15:24):
even though I'm not I like theidea of having open hands, specially bega
and will chinge out weapons as such. But I will say the way that
they did attack it, they didn'tjust like drill a hole in. There
is some sculpting of the fingers thatroll up and over and into it,
and it does feel a little morefleshed out and thought through. And so

(15:46):
when you do have the figure andyou look at it, even though it
is a hole and it is aclosed fist sort of hand, the fingers
do have some lift that makes itlook a little more natural and not just
like a solid sculptured hand with awhole drills in it. So it does
feel like it was thought out insculpt well, and I'm sure once you

(16:08):
put his weapon in there, youcan't really tell as well. No,
not at all. Yeah, okay, so I'll get over that then and
again, you know, like yousaid, his hands have the scaling all
over them. I love, especiallyhis left hand has the scales kind of
go down over his over his fingersalmost like he's wearing a bandage over it,
like they've just been built up overyou. It's really cool. So

(16:30):
from there, let's talk then aboutthe loincloth that you talked about. It's
it's the belt is the kind ofa bronze color, and what is the
design on his belt on what wouldbe the buckle. They're supposed to be
a snake? No, no,even better, so he has he has
the Grecian wave swirls all the wayaround his belt and then on the front

(16:52):
where the buckle is he has whatlooks like a cut off lizard tail that
wraps around to show the big ballkind of like uh slammer at the end
of the tail. So it's almostlike a cut off lizard tail that has
been swirled around as a g onhis belt buckle. It took me forever

(17:15):
to figure out. I was like, what is this supposed to be like
a whip or what is this? But it is a lizard tail. It's
like his tail that has been cutoff and that they're showing that it might
get cut off, but it's goingto grow back because where you know,
lizard people and we come back witha vengeance sort of thing. And then

(17:36):
it's got like some plant motif thatcomes out and like little screws that are
show how it's plated onto him andthe bronzing it's more like a copper because
it's very orangey in nature, soit has this nice orange effect against this
really dark, matted, kind oftoned down navy blue, which is a

(17:59):
nice call back again to the vintagetoy with a bright orange belt and royal
blue loincloth. Right, and andagain we've got this navy blue here that
we've got I really like what they'vedone here because the I guess what would
you call them, the little divotsthat are on there. Yeah, the

(18:22):
rivets, the rivets, thank you. That's they've gone through the trouble of
painting them all silver. And there'ssome paint, some overpaint on some of
them. But I don't mind itbecause at a glance, what it does
is it really offsets everything else andlets you know exactly what you're looking at.
There. There's strips of leather thathave been riveted together, and I
just think it looks phenomenal. Yeah, probably the best, probably the best

(18:44):
loincloth that we've had so far.I think it is down right, it's
gorgeous. It is a and it'sit's still kind of a softer plastic so
it doesn't hinder the articulation of thelegs. It is beautiful to look at
this figure. It's a great figureto admire. Well. And they're not
all symmetrical. Unlike his back. These are not symmetrical. So the things

(19:07):
that aren't you know, man made, are not and they might not be
perfectly symmetrical if you made it byhand, right. I just I just
think it's great, You know whatyou're saying about the idea of him being
like a statue. I mean,it's you had to remember the full horsemen.
When they were creating these, theywere creating them in a very statue

(19:27):
aqu sort of pose like. Soone leg actually this is not the same
sculpted as the other leg. Onebows out a little bit more than the
other for the reason that it isasymmetrical and it's pose and look, it's
still very playable, but it isset to where it's not completely you know,

(19:51):
proportionate from one side to the other. And I love it. They
do this with the man made objectsthat they have, they do it with
the stance of these figures. It'sit's beautiful. And when you go around
to the back, we've got longerstrips that are just kind of you know,
I guess sewn on for lack ofa better word, to the buckle.
But the one in the middle onthe back has a rivet halfway down

(20:11):
because I guess this is to makeroom for his action feature, right,
yes, yea, And what ishis action feature? Remind me, Okay,
his action feature is absolutely awesome. So he has this tail that is
attached to this back joint. Okay, and this tell is pose. It

(20:33):
hangs off to the if you're lookingat its back, it hangs off to
the right hand side. When youpress the button on his left, the
tail swings over to the left andknock things over. And it is a
hefty, hefty tail like it'll knockaction figures, it'll knock play set pieces
over. This thing has got alot of like kit to it. Nice

(20:56):
because the vintage you remember was arubber tail. You'd pull his waist and
it would slam stuff. First time. They've got all the power in the
tail. But I don't like thatWe've got that button sticking out to the
side. It looks like a littlelike a It's like something just stuck a
hilt of a sword or something stickingout of his side. I'm not a
big fan of that. I wishthey could have hidden that a little better.

(21:18):
Yeah, I'm not either, Andthat's kind of that's the one downfall.
There's there's a couple of downfalls withthe play feature, one of which
is where the tail attaches to thebody on the back. The top part
where it's supposed to be a tailis actually painted blue. Well, it's
blue plastic instead of that instead ofthem having painted the tail to look like

(21:45):
the tail the top of it isblue plastic and then that button on the
side. The action feature is reallycool. It's a great action feature,
and I mean it is super effectiveas far as play, but where it's
at and then how the tail attaches, and then to not see them take
notice, like you know, they'repainting silver rivets on the leather, but

(22:08):
then they're not painting the top ofthe tail to like the rest of the
tail on the figure. It's abit of a down like kind of a
downer and this down great on thefigure. Yeah, it's and it's odd
because again, they put so muchcare into everything else, why would they
not do the same with this, right right, Yeah, it is strange.

(22:30):
It's very strange. And so thenfrom there we got his his legs,
and only thing left to talk abouther his legs, and then his
accessory. But his legs again, much like his arms, they're very very
stout. He's got these huge likeyou know runners calves, Yeah, and
our sprinters calves, I should say. And and again we've got the plate
that goes all the way down oneach one, especially his kneecap where his

(22:51):
kneecaps are it's like extra thick. And then we've got the you know,
we've got the anklets that match thebracelets that he's got up there, and
he's got claws in any of histoes and his claws. These claws are
like dark green, aren't they.Yeah, yeah, the same the same
color on the claws on his fingers. For the parts that where you get
to see the claws, they're painteddark green to match the dark green on

(23:15):
the upper part of the body.Okay, yeah, and I do.
I really like the way that they'vesculpted, especially, like I said,
his calves are just huge. Mycousin and a cousin he was in the
army and he had the biggest calvesI've ever seen. Looked like this.
That tells you how big this guy'scalves were. And I loved it.

(23:36):
I loved it. The back ofhis feet where his heels are, are
just like hard. You can tellif they would be just like the hardest
part of his body. Yeah.So that brings us to his accessory.
So Taylor, tell me about whatis this thing that we're looking at.
It's looking like it's got like atwo two bladed something or other. So
one end it is a so you'vegot a handle that has this housing when

(24:00):
it has a hook like blade thathas a hole in it, and then
along the front for the knuckle dusterportion, you have another blade that comes
down that's got some writing on it. It's probably one of the most awkward
weapons I think out of the lineso far. You know, the original

(24:22):
weapon that we had was a spear, and it was kind of the castle
gray skull spear, you know, but it was done in orange. They've
kind of kept to that by havingthe kind of copperish orange metallic look.
But then they've added a blade andthis kind of hooked blade at the top.
This is one of those weapons whereI'm not entirely sold on, Like

(24:48):
I think it's okay, but Iat this point would have just preferred a
spear, Like I would much ratherhave that. Like it just this seems
almost like a little too much inmy opinion, Okay, And why is
that? It's just it's overly complicated. I can see that, and it

(25:11):
doesn't kind of it doesn't fit withhis sort of the brutish nature of the
figure. It does seem a littleoverbuilt. Yeah, yeah, but but
I'm I'm yeah, seeing it lookspretty cool in his hand though, right,
Yeah, it's not too bad.I mean it looks it looks pretty
cool. I don't know. Ithink I still think a spear would have

(25:34):
been better. It would have fitwith more of the Grecian look. I
think a little bit more. Thishas kind of the Grecian column sort of
look built into it. It's justit's it's kind of odd. It's supposed
to be like technical. It's gotlike a pipe that runs down on one
one side. It's got some mechanicalgeared thing around the blades, but there

(25:56):
doesn't seem to be any reasoning why. This is one of those I'm not
quite sure what I'm looking at forthe weapon because the weapon doesn't really seem
like it's a functional piece. Yeah, I agree, but I do like
the design on there. It ispretty cool. Yeah, all right.

(26:17):
So that brings us to the partof the show where we ask the question,
So, Taylor, what is yourfavorite feature about this toy? So,
my favorite feature actually has to dowith the sculpting of the body into
the belt. Like I love thelook from the body into the belt and
the detail work they put into it. Is truly amazing. It's it is

(26:41):
incredible to look at and to lookover and and to check out how they
were able to blend, you know, these elements together to give you some
man made some very animalistic things andhave it work so well together. Are
you sure it's not just that youlike the fact that they made him a

(27:02):
little bit chubby, you know,it's I mean technically, like thinking about
all the masters, I feel likelike I feel more like him and that
I'm you know, big beefy, stocky kind of dude that I would fit
with him. And I mean he'she's pretty round around the waist, like
he's not, you know, likewide, I'm flat. Like when you

(27:23):
turn his waist it you don't thinkget like said, yeah, he's thick,
but he's round too. Yeah.Well, my favorite feature is at
Loincloth. I just think they knockedthis one out of the park. Like
I said, it's the best onewe've seen yet in any of these lines.
And I love the color. Ilove the fact that they painted the
rivets on there. And again, even though the one I'm looking at has

(27:45):
a little bit of overpain on it, I don't mind it because that little
extra bit of effort is something Ijust wonder why they didn't do that on
other figures. And that brings meto my least favorite part feature of about
this toy, which I will talkabout first, is that stupid stick sticking
out of the side that you usefor the tail. How do they not

(28:06):
hide that better to pair up withyour stick? My least favorite part has
to do with the fact that itcolor the top of the tail on the
Torso. So the action feature isa great action feature. It is super
playful, It is incredibly fun toplay with. But between the stick and
its placement and the fact that wehave a tail, the top of it

(28:30):
is not painted. When you're paintingrivets on the belt, just a little
bit of green paint at the topof this tail would have worked. Wonders
between that and the stick, It'slike the play feature being great. Is
it works, but the execution isnot exactly the best agreed agreed, yeah,

(29:00):
hundred percent, So what do youthink best exemplifies the line with this
toy? So this one is definitelyone of those where they have they have
done a more realistic upgrade that setsit into a modern era of toys,
but it does not take away fromthe fantasy element that the figure initially had,

(29:22):
and said it enhances that fantasy elementof the figure by giving it a
more realistic look. Okay, AndI think for me it's that they've again
they've sort of taken what was alreadya really cool figure and made it even
better. You know, again thatlowincloth alone is enough for me to give

(29:45):
almost anything on this figure a pass. I just again, I think it's
I think it's phenomenal. And there'svery little about this figure that I think
they didn't do just perfectly. Thebig problem is the one that we talked
about. So is this toy cool? Yes, this toy is actually very

(30:07):
cool. Yeah, this is againone of the better ones we talked about.
I again, I don't even mindas much. That's the trigger Hank
is sticking out the side. Idon't understand why they didn't do a better
job with it, but again Ican I can let it go. Yeah,
it might have to do with theplacement of the tell and how it

(30:30):
was supposed to work. Probably mightnot have been able to do it,
but it's all in all, that'sone of those that when I finally got
my hands on the figure and gotit out, Like I was super shocked
because I'm not the biggest Whiplash fan, but this version of him made me
love this character so much. Andnow I feel back because didn't I get

(30:53):
you an animation cell of Whipple Ohyeah, no, I love that.
Yeah, I have an animation cellof Whiplash, which I love. But
the thing is is, initially, like back in the day, I didn't
care that much for a Whiplash Idon't. I know. I had one
that I think was inherited from likea friend of mine, and you know,
I liked the figure, but Iwasn't like in love with the figure.

(31:15):
