(00:15):
Welcome to Talking Toys with Taylor andJeff, where we go back in time
to discuss our favorite toys, onetoy line at a time. Hello,
and welcome to Talking Toys with Taylorand Jeff. Action Figure Exclusive. I'm
(00:38):
Taylor and I'm Jeff, and we'rehere to talk about another two thousand X
character. We're talking Many Faces, yep. And I mean I mentioned him
in the last show because it's oneof those characters that anytime I would find
another version of him I was tryingto get, and he's definitely one of
(00:59):
them. Yeah, this is thisis one of your one of your favorites.
Yeah, wait, anytime you tryto find a different version you're trying
to get, and you said, this is definitely one of them, meaning
a version of the character or onethat you've been trying to get. No,
like, it's okay. So anytimethat they come out with a new
many Faces, I usually will endup getting it. So I have I
(01:19):
have a vintage. I have thetwo thousand and xs. There was the
Snake Man color two thousand and xtsI'm trying to get. There's the the
classics I got as soon as itit launched. There's the loyal subjects.
I'm trying to get the new likethe he Man, the new Netflix he
(01:41):
Man one and the Master Verse Ihas eluded me, but I'm actually trying
to get that one as well, and then ended up getting the origins.
But then my kid took it,of course, And so this is this
is one of your favorites, right, I love many faces. Yes,
I remember him and buzz off thesame day. I was actually in Richardson
(02:07):
with my grandmother and we got himat the Galleria. Oh wow, Okay,
cool. So this one to melooks more like the original version than
any of the others we discussed, would you agree? For the most part
(02:28):
there there's still some really good updatesto this. One of the things that
I do love about this builds amechanic that we will use for all the
other figures in the future. Butthis one has like probably the closest to
what we had with the vintage, with just some extra kind of nods to
(02:53):
updating the mechanics. Okay, howmany faces does he have? Three?
So many faces? Will always havethree faces. The the classics had it
where you could you could switch outlike the head. Okay, we're going
to talk about the classics later. We're talking two thousand x right now,
(03:15):
right, but don't don't pre talkleave us nothing to talk about when we
get to the classics line we're talkingabout. But even vintage, it's always
been that the head has rotated. It only has three heads at a time.
Okay, I just the pictures I'mseeing only have two. It's got
the like his main face, Iguess, sort of the orange with the
(03:37):
like the red goggles, and thenthe metallic the robot looking face. Yeah.
No, he has the superhero, the monster, and the robot.
And that's that's kind of a pinpointto the comic as well, because in
the comic the robot would help himcompute, the monster gave him raw power,
and that's the one that beast Manused, well, like when he
(03:59):
was a monster, for beast Manwould control him when he was a monster
form. And then his actor orhero face is his main face. Okay,
because he's an actor, right,Yeah, I remember that. Yeah,
So okay, so let's just startat the top with this guy.
He's got the same sort of armoron that the original one had. He's
(04:21):
got this big you know, likecylinder thing bucket thing that fits over his
head. That's blue. The original'shead did not turn, and this thing
went down over his shoulders and everything, and it was like sculpted into his
body. This one, it stopswhere his neck would be. Yes,
so does this one? Does thehead turn on this one or is it
(04:42):
still stationary? It does? Itturns now, there is some there's a
little bit of stop like how farthis think can move, but it does
turn a little bit to each side, so it has a basic swivel,
and then you can still turn thefaces on the ends. So the way
they built the mechanic for this they'veused for other manny faces down the line,
(05:04):
which is really nice because they solvedthat area of being able to turn
the face because before, like whenI would play with the Vintage, he
would kind of do a Night toDay nine batman to turn this way and
that so you could see it wasright right, Okay, so cool.
(05:26):
So it does turn left right,And so the little thing on top of
his head that looks like it's sortof what color is that. It's it's
red. It's a it's kind ofa one of the things that they changed
from the vintage. The Vintage wassupposed to be red, but the way
that they put the coloring down,it always came out as a magenta.
And there's been some back and forthbecause even like the the Crosshell art had
(05:53):
blue with like purple, so thehoses were supposed to be purple, and
so it's like is it red oris it purple? So they've got on
this one. It's red with justa touch of blue, so it's almost
like a metallic magenta. But it'smore on the red side than anything else,
so they stuck with more of ared coloring for many faces. On
(06:14):
this it's almost like a maroon, but it's metallic, okay. And so
and it sort of matches the redon his like his thigh, the middle
of his thigh okay, and Iguess the hoses that are on his chest
yep. And on the cock okaycopies of I was not looking at his
crotch. Thank you for bringing itto my attention. It also matches the
(06:38):
cheek armor on the hero face aswell, because he has the right that
coloring there, and on the robotit has the same coloring within a part
of the mechanics. Yeah, soit's repeated through the through the piece,
right, Okay, and then againthe the head piece, the helmet,
whatever is is blue, and it'sI believe this is very close to the
(06:59):
same color blue is the original line, right, Yes, it's very close,
but it's obviously got a little moredetail. Yes, So looking at
the two the blue is a littlebit darker than the vintage. The vintage
tend to be more of kind oflike what you would think of as primary
blue, and this falls more ona royal blue where it's just a little
(07:21):
bit darker, so it doesn't feelquite so bright, but it is like
the orange is the same, theblue is a little bit darker, and
then the red or kind of themagenta is metallicized this time to kind of
(07:42):
make it, I guess, feelmore modern. So it's there's some differences
between the two, but it's nottoo much of a color difference, Like
I can look at this and knowthat it's manny faces, even though that
the blue is a lot darker, and it feels better on this line than
it does with that bright, brightblue. Like when I look at him
(08:05):
and the vintage, I prefer thetwo thousand and next because of that darker
blue. It creates more of acontrast for me. More of a contrast.
Yeah, I'm with you there. Now, what about the detail in
this thing is actually pretty cool. There's looks like there's several plates like built
upon one another. Is that whatI'm looking at? And then off to
the side, it looks like there'smaybe some hoses or something. Yeah,
(08:26):
So the vintage toy has like ait's like a chest piece that comes up
and it's all sculpted on. It'sgot a couple hoses, and it goes
almost up to his mouth almost likea mic, right or a mouthpiece.
What they did with this is thatthey he has his body, his kind
of orange body, and then he'sgot the blue mechanics that are on top
(08:48):
of his shoulders. But then hehe actually has a little piece that's glued
in that is silver and light blue. It's like almost like Robin's Egg.
It's like bluish gray that is builton top that covers some of his face.
So they took the vintage idea andkind of modernized it to look like
(09:09):
either a mouthpiece or some sort oflike filter or vent thing that comes up
and helps bring the Robin's Egg bluefrom the legs into the chest to kind
of finalize the look to make itlook more believable and more makes the motif
(09:30):
flow a little bit better. Ithelps how goodness, I'm struggling on the
artword. It gives it unity, that's what okay? Yeah, and I
can see that. Yeah, andthen coming down from that, it looks
like there's I can't tell if thisis like a hose or some sort of
elastic or something coming down from itacross his chest that sort of connects to
(09:52):
this looks like a mister microphone onhis chest. Yeah, so that's the
chest plate on the front that it'slike microphone piece. And they they are
they have the hoses that actually comeup from the shoulders and from the waists
that build into it. Right. But I see that the red the red
hoses, but the blue above thatis that just some sort of is it
(10:13):
just like a it's just a it'sa plate. It's like a neck plate
thing, Okay, just to kindof hold it on there. Okay,
Yeah, Now what is deal withthe microphone? I mean, if he's
an actor, honestly, he shouldbe able to project and not need a
microphone, you would think. Ithink it's just a design choice. I
don't think it's actually a microphone,but maybe it's just a design choice.
(10:35):
I never saw anything in the cartoonwhere that was ever pointed out as a
specific tool or anything that he used, you know, So maybe maybe it's
just a communication device so he cancall back over to the Attornian Palace and
let them know what's going on.Not quite sure. It looks cool,
(10:58):
but not quite sure what it is. Right, Yeah, it's it's it's
weird, but it's okay. Itlooks like it's silver, and then the
housing that it sits in is likea greenish blue or is it just all
silver and that's just the color thatI'm seeing on my picture. No,
it's it's silver, but that itdoes have that it's like Robin's egg.
It's like a bluish gray. It'svery light that's painted around it. So
(11:22):
you've got the two silver pieces ofhoses, the microphone on top, and
the rest of the housing. Isthat Robin's egg? Okay, Yeah,
makes sense? So okay, socoming down from the from the helmet,
We've talked about it, he's gotthis orange it's not his skin, right,
(11:46):
Is that like a bodysuit that he'swearing or what is that or is
that his skin? Well, sothat's the big debate. That is the
debate. You know, the vintage. You know it looks like a skin
suit because the face was kind oftan though it was supposed to be I
(12:07):
think all kind of a tan colorand it never turned out that way.
Is there a creepier term than skinsuit? I don't know. Maybe the
problem is with many faces, andwe had to go back to the vintage
for this. The crosshell art wasmeant to have it to where it was
(12:28):
like his whatever was orange was supposedto be actual skin colored, and then
the other stuff was supposed to bea darker blue and purple, but they
never got the coloring correct, soinstead the skin came out as orange,
the purple came out as like amagenta red, and then the blue came
(12:52):
out as really really bright, kindof like primary. So I believe this
is his skin. He's he's kindof got. I mean, it's weird
because it's almost like it's like he'dbe jaundice or he eats a lot of
carrots. Because it's it is orange. I'll go ahead and say it's it's
orange. It's kind of odd.But his face this time is also just
(13:16):
directly orange. Okay, I'm gonnago with it's his skin, okay.
Uh And again I'll buy that that'swhat it looks like to me as well.
So so we're just looking at hisskin and he's got you know,
he's got these abs and everything. But how does it how does it then
(13:37):
fit go up and fit into fitaround the helmet? Is it? Is
it surgical? Yeah? I guessthat they they open up the top of
them and they just stretched the skinup over a mechanical piece. Okay,
that's what I can't you know,I'm going to go back for a minute.
(13:58):
And and those that listen to thelast show a buzz off, Jeff,
you'll buy that this is orange skin, but you can't buy that buzz
Offs kiten created armor could be tan. Nope, I will not, because
this at least makes sense and isconsistent. What I am confused about,
(14:20):
though, is the fact that itdoes what what I what I what I
am concerned about and confused about isthe fact again that it does come up
and sit out from his helmet. So you told me this guy was born
this way with the helmet on.There, no, no, he would
be he'd be a cyborg. Okay, so this is something that was done
(14:41):
to him after the fact. Yeah, so okay, no again, that's
fine. You know if you toldme that about buzz Off, I would
have bought that as well. See, this is this is one of those
characters where like the backstory was neverreally explained. I mean even even with
Class, it was never like explainedlike how he is, how he's able
(15:05):
to do what he does, youknow, because that at one point we
had other characters and we've talked aboutthem, where like drag Store and Snout
Spout were like athletes that were takenby the Horde and they were you know,
manipulated and thrown into the mechanical thingsand you know that's how they became
cyborgs. Manny Faces is technically acyborg, but there's never been any backstory
(15:31):
on how or why, Okay, and it just it's kind of weird,
all right. So we talked aboutwe talked about the skin, we talked
about the hoses and everything. Howdo the faces we didn't talk with us.
How do the faces compared to theoriginal. They look to be very
similar to me, they are veryvery similar. The big thing is,
(15:52):
the biggest update has to be probablythe the robot face looks more more mechanical
this time than the vintage did.It looks more like Brainiac to me,
right, Yeah, But the monsterface looks incredible, The Hero face looks
(16:12):
incredible. The robot is just alittle more advanced than what we've had before.
And I like the vintage robot hada lot because it reminded me of
a Scout trooper from Return of theJedi, So like the Imperial Scouts,
like the way that their helmet wasshaped. That the robot face for many
(16:33):
faces reminded me a lot of that, whereas this time it's a little bit
flatter. It feels more like atransformer. It's just kind of odd.
Yeah, you can imagine on myshelf. I have the robot face for
the vintage, I have the monsterface. I think for this one that
I think got the hero face onthe classics, I put my favorite faces
(16:57):
forward, okay, and then belowthat we got his his crotchell area again,
it's sort of armor, and we'vegot this red plating. Why did
they feel they need to put thisred plating there? I guess so he
could bend over. Is that toallow him to sit and everything. You
give him a little bit of flexibility. It's so it's kind of like Batman's
(17:18):
symbol. It's that's an area that'sarmored in the other area is not on
his skin, so that becomes atarget area because it's armored. A target
area. Yeah, you know, that's how Batman's emblem works. He wants
to shoot people to shoot at hiscrotch. Yeah, I'm just gonna leave
(17:41):
that there. Let's talk about hisarms. His arms, he's got the
plating that goes down over his shouldersand over his wrists and hands, but
then down the side like his bicepsand everything. It looks like he's just
got either a backing or a stripof metal. There is that, right,
Yes, yep. And these areyou know, they're basically modernized looks
(18:06):
at what we got with the vintagetoy, which, if you remember,
the vintage toy was a reuse ofparts from trap Jaw where he had kind
of the right the top of theshoulder piece, you had the back plating
on the arm that moved into theforearm, and they replicated that and updated
it when they did the vintage manyfaces. So they're trying to pull that
(18:30):
same thing off here and for themost part, it looks incredibly good.
You know, you've got some veinwork on the arm, which again makes
me think that this is his skinand not necessarily like a body suit because
the fact you're seeing his veins. But then you've got the mechanical pieces on
top that just it looks great. The interior plating of the arm has vents
(18:56):
for the hand, and it justeven even the it's almost like sergeant stripes
that were sculpted on the vintage havemade it onto this edition as well.
So you've got a stack of likethree stripes that almost work as a chevron
on the shoulder and they made sureto have that over on this one.
(19:18):
And I love those small details thatthey put in. Okay, yeah,
no, I dig it too. Now, his hand looks like his left
hand is closed in a fist.Is that right. Yes, he's got
a punching hand, and he doeshave a spring powered waste, so you
can use that. That's we're gonnaask you that. Look. I assumed
(19:40):
that that was the case. Andyes, So he's got these gauntlets on
his wrists that go around and itlooks like there's like a cutout part on
the inside of his wrist. Isthat is that what I'm seeing? Yes,
yeah, it'd be like a ventokay, So so with the events
and and then his other hand isopen so he can hold his weapon,
(20:03):
which we'll talk about in a second. So then that brings us to his
legs. And his legs are interestingbecause they've got the same color you called
it that robins egg blue that that'son the the microphone, around around his
chest and that's the top part likehis hips, going down into like his
his the back of his thighs, but in the front of his thighs he's
(20:26):
got the red plating like we haveon the crotch. And then around that
he's got that darker blue that goalsof all the way down to his boots.
Yes, so are they And thenthe hoses are the same robin zg
blue. Are you supposed to bedifferent pieces or is it just that part
of it is painted differently than therest. So my guess is that these
would be like plates of armor, right, they are all different types of
(20:49):
armor that are stacked on top ofthe other. The big thing is that
they wanted to instead of making thelegs all kind of blue, the red
on top. The vintage, theywere almost like high, like thigh high
type of armored plates that came allthe way up onto his thighs. And
(21:10):
then he had the orange skin andthat's what went up into the armored red
plated underwear. But I think tocut down on the silliness of the skin
aspect going into the underwear, theymade it to where like it was plated
armor all the way up and justchose this Robin's egg as a differentiation color
(21:33):
that wouldn't be orange and look likeskin. So I think that they were
thinking through like, Okay, hehas mechanical pants on, so like all
of his leg's going to be armored, but we're going to paint this this
other color so it doesn't look sogoofy, And so I think that they're
choosing that and choosing to separate itto kind of pay a nod back to
(21:55):
the vintage, but without it beingorange skin, which is like what we
got with the vintage toy, right, And I actually prefer this. I
like this better. I think itlooks better. I it looks to me
like his legs are like superposed becausethe the armor that we have coming down,
(22:21):
like coming down, he's got he'sgot the you know, like I
said, we talked about the redarmor plating, but below that, like
where his knees are, he's gotsome really intense looking metal there. And
then going down into his boots again, it almost it all just looks makes
him look like a cyborg. Yeah, well, because he is a cyborg.
(22:41):
He is, but it looks reallyposed. It looks like he's like
he's almost crouching, like in ahalf crouch. Is that right? Yes,
yeah, so he is. Hehas posed up with one leg forward
more than the other, and he'sgot he's got a bit of squad on
his legs, so he he lookslike he be taller, but he's he's
not. And he definitely is kindof in that power stance to I guess
(23:07):
be in the stance to allow himto hold his weapon up and out and
fire it. So it's almost likea shooter stance, right yeah, yeah,
I can see that. So okay, and then his boots have these
really thick soles on him, whichI like, but it doesn't look like
there's something. They look like clothboots. But are they are they supposed
(23:29):
to be armored, they're all armored? Okay, Yeah, it's there's it's
all plates of armor stacked on topof each other. The only thing that
would be flexible. There hoses thatrun on the front of the shins,
and then there's hoses that around theinside of the thighs, and that's it.
Everything else is supposed to be plated. Okay, all right, So
(23:52):
then let's talk about his accessory. He's got this big gun, which looks
if I'm remembering right, this issimilar to the one that the origin character
came with, right right, Okay, So I've got a story with this
gun. Oh boy. So thiswas one of those eBay purchases that I
had picked up and I'd gotten areally good deal on it, and it
(24:15):
was the figure of the gun hismissile, and the seller sends it to
me and uh and says, hey, you know, I've got it in
the mail. You should have it. A few days. I get it.
I'm excited. I pulled out andI noticed there's no missile on it.
So I wrote back. I waslike, hey, what's going on,
(24:36):
goes Oh, yeah, we lostthe missile. I hope that it's
okay, And I'm like, no, I remember this happening. Yeah,
Like I'm not leaving feedback until thatmissile gets sent to me. Well,
we don't know where it is.You're going to find it if if you
had it in the picture. That'swhat you told me. You need to
get that sent in. And ittook a while and they sent and it
(25:00):
got sent in an envelope and Iguess it got caught on a machine.
So I've got a huge nick inmy blue missile where it got caught on
something and kind of cut a littlepiece out of it, which kind of
bothers me. But this thing isso oversized that when you hold it out
(25:23):
for him to fire with, ifyou don't have him set in the correct
pose, he will topple over andknock everything down off of a shelf.
I was gonna ask Gigantic, Okay, so that's when he's holding it.
It won't stand up when he's notholding it. It seemed this one is
far less top heavy than the firstone than the original. So how does
(25:48):
he stand on his own without thegun? He stands great on his own
without the gun, Like the waythat they have him post out, he
stands really really well. Where's thevintage? Yeah, especially when the when
the rubber bands started to go out, you know, you would kind of
face forward and slink down with thisone stands really well. However, the
(26:12):
weapon with him pose with the weapon. It takes a little bit of of
naggling to get the weapon. Yeah. Yeah, most of the time there's
a picture like where the person hasthem that's got the weapon. He's pointed
at the ground and it almost worksas a cane. And so that's kind
(26:34):
of the best way to pose themwith this weapon. The weapon itself,
and let's let's talk about the weapon. So, yeah, it's silver.
The weapon itself is silver. Themissile is blue, like a light blue,
and I guess the trigger on theback is light blue. Yeah,
the handle and the trigger on theback is also light blue. I like
(26:55):
that because it kind of lets youknow visually how it works without even without
having to be told, right,And I mean it's cool. It has
a lot of the same kind ofplate features that the vintage weapon had.
Now, the vintage weapon was allorange, so it's kind of a bright
almost like vermilion. It's like areddish orange. And there is something to
(27:17):
note within this line. There isone wave of many faces figures that came
out where the gun was metallic redand the missile and the handles were red,
so it looked more like the vintagetoy with the red gun, and
that's I do not have that one. That one's a very rare one to
(27:40):
find, and I'm actually not sure, like like exactly what wave that one
came in. But there is aversion of him that has an all red
gun that mimics more of the vintagetoy than this one. And the big
difference between this and the vintage besidesfor the update and the over size,
is the fact that it's silver andblue, whereas we had orange with the
(28:06):
old one. Yeah, but yeah, I don't have a problem with that.
Again, I like that that's they'resort of color coded. Okay,
yeah, I kind of like that. But so I guess that brings us
to our questions, you know what, what is your favorite feature about this
toy? My favorite feature is howthey dealt with the head turning and the
(28:32):
rotation like it is so I remembergetting that and wondering how in the world
they were going to do that, and it's just it's so beautifully rendered.
It is incredible, And I thinkfor me, I think I like the
fact that he's not a top heavyYeah, as before, you know,
just kind of what you were talkingabout. They've the've kind of, i
think, done a better job ofof making it look a little more realistic.
(28:56):
I think, Okay, what isyour least favorite feature about this toy.
You're probably gonna think that I'm gonnasay it's the cannon, and it's
not. I'll stop trying to predictwhat you're going to say. The one
area that that is kind of disappointedme. On the very back of them.
(29:18):
You have on its back all thisbeautiful sculpting. You've got all the
mechanics and everything, but there's nopaint application at all on his back,
and so he's got just a biglarge orange plate where we should have probably
some sort of like coloring, eithera blue plate or even like a red
hose or mechanical pieces. I don'tknow. I don't know, because he's
(29:45):
got beautiful paint application everywhere else, but on his back it is very boring.
Yeah, I would agree there aswell. I can I can agree
with you there completely. For me, I think it probably is the This
(30:10):
has nothing to do with the figure. I don't like that this guy is
an actor. What he's really gonnalimit his his his castability. With these
enhancements that he's got, it canreally only play manny faces. Okay,
(30:30):
but that's the character, that's notthe figure, So I'll think of another
figure for the figure. I agree. I think that I think the weapon
is way oversized for him. Ifyou're gonna make a weapon and he won't
be able to stand up while he'sholding it, I think that's a mistake.
They should have done something a littledifferent with that. Maybe give it
like a shoulder holster or something forhim to hold so he can set it
(30:51):
back a little bit. So I'mI'm taking I'm taking the hit on the
weapon there. So what what doesthis figure best to represent about the line?
So this really does feel like anice update to the Vintage it This
one tends to fall more on thesci fi. So where we had,
you know, kind of a fantasysci fi before, this one takes a
(31:14):
sci fi element and go it justruns with it. Because it looks like
a cyborg word the Vintage, it'siffy. This really takes what the Vintage
did and puts it on a hugestimulant. So I can believe that this
thing kind of could exist. Soit's as far as updated, like,
(31:37):
it really looks like the character, but it's a great modernization of it.
I agree. I think that they'vethey've taken what worked about the original figure
and made it better, and they'vetaken what didn't work minus the weapon and
made it work. Yeah. Imean yeah, I mean thinking about the
fact that his head turns now.Yeah, it's definitely taking what didn't work
(32:02):
before and making it really work thistime. Yeah, agreed, agreed.
So is this toy cool? Yes? He is very cool. Pretty much
any version of Manny Faces cool.Yeah, no, I agree, despite
my misgivings about the weapon, thefigure is cool. The backstory of the
(32:22):
character not so much. But thefigure is very cool. I like this
one a lot, and especially withthe klose Kem. I like the blue
and the orange together, and thathint of red that they've thrown in just
works really well for me. SoI'm with you on that one. This
