(00:08):
You're listening to Tarot Visions, joinyour host Rose Red Robinson as she chats
with esoteric luminaries, explores technology touse in one's personal practice, and dives
into witchcraft and magic in everyday life. Good morning, and welcome to Tarot

(00:32):
Visions. It's my privilege and honorto be able to interview Maria Minnas,
who wrote Taro for the hard workand welcome. Thank you so much for
having me. I'm so excited tobe here today. Oh fantastic. I
know it's holiday time. It's rainingoutside because we are on the West Coast,

(00:53):
so there's no snow at least notwhere we live, thank goodness.
And it's also kind of time fordoing a lot of good shadow work,
and this book is perfect to openthat doorway. I think, Wow,
it's a good way to step intoyour shadow work, especially at this time

(01:15):
of year, because it's important tonot just gloss over some things, and
we as Americans specifically kind of dothat. I think, yeah, you
know, we take the path ofleaf resistance. That's natural. And in
this book, I'm just trying toencourage people to push beyond their comfort levels

(01:37):
a little bit and recognize how theycan uniquely show up in the world to
create change. Yes, and that'ssomething I really loved about that, And
it also is really poignant I thinkfor this time and culture as well,
because it makes us all look morethan once at ourselves, and I think
that's super important. So let's startwith the easy question. You've been doing

(02:00):
taro for twenty years according to yourbio, Yes, I read it.
Oh and everyone else should too.So the thing that didn't pop up?
So I'm gonna ask, do youremember what your first tarot deck was?
I would say, oh, gosh, maybe it was the Heindel Hindel Tarot

(02:23):
deck. I didn't get into writeor wait until like a few years into
my journey, but the Hindel deckis just one of my favorites, in
one of the decks that speaks themost loudly to me. Fantastic And were
you gifted it? Did you juststumble upon it? You know? You
know how we always got that taromyth you can't buy you first tarot deck.

(02:46):
So I've heard that, and youknow what, I think that is
so silly. I was gifted thefirst tarot deck by a friend way back
when, and I totally didn't understand. So the deck didn't come with the
Little White Book, and I totallydidn't really get that there were like specific
meanings to each card. I wasjust told it's a tool to practice intuition.

(03:12):
And so the first few years Ideveloped really personal relationships with the cards
based on the symbology and how thosethings showed up in my life. And
then I really got into understanding theimportance of understanding the collective energies that we
offer and integrate with each card. And my practice as a result is a

(03:36):
blend of lots of trust in myintuition and also lots of respect for how
other tarot readers and other tarot readingrecipients have interpreted these stories. None of
us are an island. We arepart of this huge interconnected web of people,

(03:57):
places, things, structures, andsuch. So I make sure to
remember that even though my practice isvery personal, it's not just about me,
right, Oh yeah, And Ithink we all need to remember that
one. So then this got youlooking at other decks and then exploring this.
What was it that really made youdecide, Okay, now's the time

(04:19):
to write this book? Yes,So the book started as a personal project.
I was living in a very conservativeplace, and it was twenty sixteen,
twenty seventeen. Lots of things werehappening, and I became really overwhelmed

(04:44):
because when I see something, Iwant to do something. But I was
like, what can little old medo you know? Like? And plus,
like all of the resources out thereare you know, most of them
are geared toward white people, andso I it's just like, Okay,
well, I'll create my own sortof guide book to how I can do

(05:06):
anti racism in my everyday life. And so it ended up just being something
I wrote in a little notebook andcarried around with me in my purse everywhere.
And then I decided to turn itinto a blog after some guidance from
a really great tear of reading, and it just sort of grew from there,

(05:28):
and the opportunity to write a bookcame about. And even though it
is the hardest project I've ever done, it is the most worthwhile project I've
ever done. Yes, book writing. I admire people who can write books.
I am not that skilled myself, but when someone can put down their
thoughts in such clear and concise ways, it's always so refreshing to see that

(05:54):
perspective. And then to be ableto grow and learn with them that they
shared their knowledge. So that wasreally great and I love that you went
through it card by card of themajors. Do you intend to make a
follow up, perhaps for the Miners, just because I'm there's this part of
me wants more book from you specifically, so you lovet that totally accepted,

(06:18):
and yes, I would love towrite more books. Writing a book and
having it published was my number onegoal in life, and so now that's
done, I can continue on withother projects. I don't have any books
in the work right now, butI definitely want to explore the magic of
the Miners a lot more in myfuture work because I definitely do have a

(06:41):
lot to say about those cards aswell. Oh yeah, so would you
mind sharing what was the hardest cardto write about and what was the I
wouldn't say easiest, because there's there'snone of them are easy, but what
was less challenging for you? Yes, that's a really great question. And
now mind you this is not yourfavorite. That's the next question. Okay,

(07:05):
So the hardest card for me towrite was I had to do a
lot of sitting with the moon archetypeand understanding how this shows up in the
world, and it's just something Idon't I hadn't really thought about as much
as I think about how we canbe vessels for truth with the High Priestess

(07:28):
and et cetera. The easiest chapterto write was The World because that just
came from a place of just knowinghow exhausting this work can be. And
I just got to have a chapterwhere I was like, take care of
yourself. And it was great becauseI'm writing this to myself as well,

(07:51):
because none of our movements work outas optimally as they should if we're all
burnt out. Very true, Verytrue. Okay, so now I get
to ask which one was your favoriteto write? HM, my favorite card
to have written about in this book, it was definitely Temperance. I love

(08:16):
the temperance card. I love itwhen decks call it art or alchemy.
I think it is the card ofbeing an ultimate magician. It's like the
magician squared. And I got tofocus on anti racism but also blend that

(08:37):
with my appreciation for the art andmy understanding of how the arts really do
shape our culture and our society, even in ways that we might not notice.
And I felt really lucky to havean opportunity to elevate black joy and
black art and really like turn people'slenses to the fact that it's not all

(09:03):
just city hall meetings and you know, going out in the street. It's
a holistic it's a holistic journey andI just love writing about art anyway.
So Temperance is definitely my fave.Okay, So on that note, based
on this comment, who is yourcurrent favorite artist HM in any genre?

(09:24):
I think currently my favorite artist rightnow is Carrie James Marshall. I just
went to I don't know what it'scalled. It's an art gallery in Los
Angeles, and I got to seethe broad and I got to see for

(09:45):
the first time her work up closeand personal, and I just about fell
apart. A lot of her workis showing black people in everyday life,
but there is something so poet aboutthe use of colors, the muted expressions,
the care that she takes to depictpersonhood and everyday life. It's not

(10:13):
all just about the big exciting moments. It's also about what we do every
day and the people we spend ourtime with, and the things that we
overcome and the things that we celebrate. So yeah, I am really into
I'm really into her work right now. Brilliant. And when you're looking at

(10:35):
the cards, what is the thingthat you focus on most? So like
some people do color, some peopledo numbers, some people do the astrology.
When you first lay down a spread, what do you focus in on?
Yes, I would definitely say thefirst thing that comes to my mind

(10:56):
are the numbers. I think that'spretty common. And then after that,
I definitely take a look at thesymbolism, because when I see a spread,
I don't just see individual cards.I see a story, and so
I'm looking to see how to threadthese themes together and understand the story.

(11:16):
And a lot of that includes numerology. So and I love numerology, by
the way, So I definitely encouragepeople to, if they're like starting out
their tarot practice, like learn thebasics of numerology, because if you learn
the numbers and you learn the suits, then you kind of have a little

(11:37):
little entry way into beginning your pathof taro learning truth truth. There while
looking at these things, do youknow your birth card? Yes? My
birth card is the High Priestish niceand okay, so now there's there's two
schools of thought this. I'm gonnago a little nerdy here for a moment.
Two schools of thought With the birthcard. Do you go by your

(12:01):
astrology sign or do you go bythe number? I'm assuming numerology, but
do you Is it numerology for you? Yes? I add up each digit?
Nice. Sorry, I just hadto geek out for a minute about
that. I will nerd out aboutTaro with you all day. Don't get
to get started. So what areyou currently using as your as your reading

(12:26):
deck? Are you still using thehandle or are you are you incorporating some
of the newer things that are outin the world. Yes, I really
love my first edition of the Sluttestto Taro deck. I got it when
I was in a really weird, tumultuous time in discovering more about my sexuality

(12:48):
and opening my eyes. I grewup in the middle of nowhere, and
so I was really opening my eyesto the diversity of how people show up
and how we wreck and nice whatwe can offer to the world. And
Plus I just love the artwork.I love decks that have naked people in
them, and it's one of themost resonant decks for me. Definitely.

(13:13):
So that's what I've come back to. That's like my home deck, and
yeah, I would say that's definitelymy go to. Well, I will
make sure that we have a linkin the show notes so people can go
check that out. Is there onething that you would tell a new person
when they're starting out their Tarot journeyand how they can incorporate the work in

(13:35):
your book with that journey. Yes, For a new Taro reader, I
would suggest that they begin with theknowledge that the complacity or what you all
the links you see in Google andso on and so forth. And with

(13:56):
this book, I hope that peoplecan understand and that you know, they
might not resonate with the popular meaningof the card, but maybe there are
some other facets of the card thataren't talked about as much, that resonate
more truly with you. And Ithink beyond just an anti race not just
an anti racism work book, butbeyond that, I think it's a really

(14:20):
great tool to learn Taro and toadd some complexity to your practice and understanding
because we are complex beings. Thisworld is a complex place. We just
have to put one foot in frontof the other. And I hope that
this book helps people do that ina really personalized way. I can tell
you that I know that for mehaving written just a tiny bit of it,

(14:43):
because I did get the preview andthen I got finally got the actual
book. It was very eye openingand it was like, oh, yep,
that's the work I need to do. Surprise, not surprise, But
it was also that affirmation too thatthere is more out there that we all
do need to not just gloss over, and that happens we just get so

(15:05):
overwhelmed, and with this book,I think we have to go deeper.
And I think that's the beauty ofit is that it gives you that framework
to start, at least to begin, and some people need to. I
know for me, it's always niceto have some framework when I want to
try and do those journeying And Ireally appreciate because this is definitely a work

(15:28):
of it's personal obviously, but italso seems to be also something that anyone
who picks it up will get atleast something out of it if they even
bother to do the work. Andthat's kind of what I think it brings
to the table, and that's whyit's such a poignant book. For people,

(15:50):
and I'm very excited. So sorry, I'm gonna fan girl out at
you a little bit. Please do. I'm a fangirl over you. So
the feeling is mutual. And thisbook is really for anyone who's like,
where do I even freaking start. It's for white people, it's for people

(16:10):
of color, because I know asI was writing this, I was like,
oh, I have a lot ofinternalized racism to unpack by the nature
of being in this society and livingin it. So it's not just the
you know, wag of a fingerto white people. It's a tool that

(16:32):
I think anyone can use. Whetheryou love Taro, you don't care about
Taro, you're a Taro nubie,you're a Taro expert. I just hope
that if every person who picked upthis book takes one thing with them and
brings it out into their world, whether that's internally, in their relationships or
in the greater collective, I'm satisfied. Yeah, And that's that's what I

(16:59):
was I get from this. It'slike, it's not just about oh,
you white people need to do thiswork. It's everyone needs to do this
work because internally we all have thosethings because of the society we live in.
And that's the part that just mademe go, damn, yes,
but damn it's a hard till toswallow. Yeah, but again it's something

(17:22):
that we all should accept because again, our society just doesn't always make us
do the work that we should bedoing for ourselves or for the world.
So I love the fact that youdo. You're very clear about that.
It's not just to here read thisbook, white people. It's here,
read this book everyone. You impresseveryone, And I think that matters more

(17:48):
than people realize, because it's not, as you said, a fingerwag.
It is not. It is anembrace of Hey, you're a Tarot reader.
Here's some things to think about whileyou're doing reading this period, you
know. And that's really great. So what is one thing you would love
to share but people might not knowabout you? I think I talk about

(18:15):
a lot of serious things online orlike in my newsletter, et cetera.
But I'm actually a very very sillyperson. I find joy and humor in
as much as I can, andI'm always laughing. And I think,
you know, yes, I'm youknow, dedicated to liberation, but I

(18:37):
think that also includes making space forjoy and celebration and enjoying life, because
what are we fighting for if wecan't ever enjoy it? So I think
I laugh more than people than peoplerealize. Yes, I understand that,
because again you do. You arevery scholarly when you speak, and that's

(19:00):
kind of really nice too. ButI think that embracing joy is the message
I know I've gotten from some ofthese activities that I've done through your book.
So you're getting it out there. What would be a thing that you
want to share that no one knowsabout you? Hmm? And I say
that you want to share because there'sthings obviously, But what would you want

(19:23):
to share that would like, Oh, that's something cool that nobody knows about
you? Well, I do sharequite a bit about myself. I think
one thing that most people don't knowthat I would love for them to know,
which is kind of hand in handwith the last thing I shared,
which is I've taken clown classes andI really would love to move forward.

(19:47):
And that not necessarily professionally, butI just find that clowning gets me out
of my head's face. And themore you let go, the better you
are. Okay, Well, that'spretty awesome. Where Can people find you
when they're like wanting to catch upwith you. Yes, you can find

(20:08):
me at Mariaminis dot com. Ihave a very personal, sometimes not safe
for work newsletter that I produce everymonth from the heart. It's my favorite
thing that I do on the internet. And you can find me on Instagram
at Feminists, which I know you'llhave the link in the bio. I

(20:30):
try to post pretty regularly and Itry to respond to everyone. I'm a
little bit slow, but I doappreciate anytime people reach out to me.
Attention really is a gift, andto receive it it just blows my mind.
I just it blows my mind thatI have a book out about to
be out in the world and peoplecare about it and I'm just very honored.

(20:52):
So please feel free to join mein either of those channels. I
welcome you with open arms. Fantastic. Is there anything that you're doing for
the holiday season that you're willing toshare? Okay, it is very close
to some of the holidays. Ijust celebrated Hanukkah, which was wonderful,

(21:17):
but very low key. Can Itell you what I'm doing for the rest
of the year. Yes, Ihave no clue. Oh that's fair,
Okay, I have no clue. And this will be coming out in January,
so and yes, I'm saying thatso everyone who's listening will know we
did record this in December, becauseagain that's when we had the good time

(21:37):
to do it. But I alsowas wondering, are you planning to do
anything fun for New Year's or forthe New Year. I think I'm going
to join a bunch of friends ina New year ritual, and I've got,
you know, my goals lined upand this and that, but I
really want to be in community ofthe clock passes twelve. I usually am

(22:03):
not a big New Year's person, but I think there is something special about
this year coming up that I reallywant to be grounded and intentional for.
Nice. Well, and again,we're ending the year on twelve thirty one,
twenty three, so one two threeone two three is kind oh hilarious.
I didn't recognize that. Yes,also, so we'll get to end

(22:29):
the year in a weird way andstart it fresh really soon. If you
could tell a reader of your bookone thing that they should look for,
what would it be. I thinkthat they should look for reflections of themselves.
In the archetype. I think Tarodoesn't work without people. And the

(22:55):
more you can understand how different energyyou show up and how they show up
not just externally but for you,the more you can make this work personal
and the more devoted you can beto it, because it's not just something
out there, it's you. It'syour personal journey, it's your personal work,

(23:18):
and you have something special that onlyyou can offer the world. And
just by picking up this book, you've already taken a step forward. Agreed
well on that note, and Iwill say thank you for your time today
and thank you for being willing tocome on the show, and I hope

(23:38):
you have a wonderful new year, and thank you listeners. We will make
sure that in the show note youhave all the access to Maria and the
Taro for the Hard Work book,it's coming out. I think it's actually
just come out in December, soyou can get it. But what we're
gonna say, go ahead, Oh, I was just going to say it

(23:59):
actually comes out January eighth. OhWell, then I'm lucky that I got
it and other reviewers are too. Then I wanted you to happen. Thank
you. I'm so honored, andI'm going to hold it up even though
nobody can see it but the persondoing my recording and you, so you
can see I actually do have itand I'm already yeah ackly. So thank

(24:19):
you so much for being on theshow. And January so this will be
coming out around the same time asthe release of the book. So you
you dear listeners, after you've listenedto this, you can go out and
