(00:00):
This is Tatchmen. Sun's a popculture podcast, the only fan podcast to
name a Cannon Star Wars creature andto be endorsed by the writer director of
The Last Jedi, Ryan Johnson. And we've recently got our first real look
at what's coming in Captain America.A brave New Worlds so good. Looks
great. There are a lot ofstorylines in this film that seemed to pull

(00:20):
from the Conic Book universe, andso today we'll kind of be looking at
not just what those are, butmore really what the weekly Conic Book updates
are going to be. This istach mean Suns was the name of the
Pork and the Millennium Falcon forces strongin my family. What do you think

(00:46):
his name is? It's a bigmoment. I have a Jedi like my
father before me, maybe Tervis.Do you know? Oh do not?
It is no trying. Turbis Pablo. If you're listening to this live stream,

(01:12):
bat Pork's name is now Turbis. It's a good Star Wars name.
We're not done yet. These guysrecorded Blosso podcast called Tatters. Everybody listening.

(01:33):
We talked about it more later, but like, really really great.
The trailer, the trade itself.Oh yeah, because we're gonna talk about
the movie, but or the comics. But trailer, the Brave New World
trailer. Captain America am I first, Yeah, for two talks. First,
ute First, I talk first. You know, honestly, I'm not

(01:53):
one hundred percent so this is madnessnow. Now, I'm not saying it
doesn't look good. I think itlooks interesting. I'm very excited for the
Red Hulk stuff all of that. But I maybe I'm just kind of I
want to go home and rethink inmy life, jaded and cynical, apprehensive

(02:16):
from the past, recent experience, but I'm just cautiously optimistic with it.
Well, let's go with that. This movie looks fantastic. It looks like
a return to old school MCU.It is a It felt like I was
picking up back with the original CaptainAmerica trilogy, like this guy. I'm

(02:40):
excited about it. And then themore I've looked into it and researched stuff,
and I think the things we're gonnaend up I hope you're gonna end
up talking about in this episode.I couldn't be more excited. Yeah,
it seems really good and I'm veryexcited to see what it's gonna be be
like. But welcome to Tatchween SundayPop Culture Podcast. That pop culture is
the mythology of this generation, thatthere's a story written on our souls and

(03:04):
that these myths speak to that story. And that's why today we're talking about
the more stripped down side of superheroesin the MCU and beyond. But first,
please just wanted to have a bigrequest to subscribe on the sub Stack.
We're trying to reach a mission foryou big old one hundred subscribers on
there, and of course it's freeand just we would love to have you

(03:24):
there. And when we get toone hundred, we're going to be doing
a new subscribe sub Substack exclusive podcaston it and it's just going to be
a ton of talking about the Christianmyth. We're going to be walking through
the greater big story, cosmic storywithin like the Christian you know, the

(03:45):
from start to finish the Christian Bible, but looking at it from a much
more epic mythic approach versus just theindividualistic stories or even the traditional like approach
that we look at when we talkabout you know, Jesus came to save
you, and that's all part ofit. But there's a bigger story here
that we need to look at.We're going to look at it that way.
I can't wait to talk about it. Definitely. It's gonna be a

(04:08):
ton of fun. So please subscribeon substack. But enough talking about what
we're going to talk about. Let'stalk about what we're talking about. So
for new comic book releases this week, we have Detective Comics one eighty seven.
Yeah, there's there's a lot ofcomics in that because I think they
released two a month as well forthis, so it's it's quite a lot.

(04:30):
And this deal is getting worse allthe time. Yeah, so it's
it's a lot, and I'm veryfar behind. But it is the most
polled comic this week. So great. You know, the storyline is no
right now. Ultimate Black Panther issuesix. It's also in the Ultimate Universe
Black Panthers series. I've heard greatthings about it. I've heard great things

(04:51):
about Ultimate X Men, but I'mreally only into the Ultimate Spider Man and
Ultimate stuff. I've yet to readUltimates, but really into the Ultimate Spider
Man stuff. It's been good.Void Rivals issue eleven, which is part
of the Energy on Universe. That'sthat's kind of kicking off to a very
strong start. They're actually going tobe having a panel for the Energy on

(05:12):
Universe at San Diego com just acouple of day, which is just a
couple of days, so that'll behuge. TMNT issue one or Turtles issue
won their restart and relaunch. Cool, all right, let's get to work
the series. So if that's somethingyou would pick up, Sam, so,
yeah, very definitely go check itout if you want to. Can
that be that's not an Energy onUniverse? His IDW, so that will

(05:35):
not be in the Energy on Universe. And then Captain America issue eleven,
which I'll appropriates behind that, andso yeah, definitely go check that out.
From like the couple or a fewissues I've read, it's been good.
Do you have all the comics you'rejust not reading them or are you
just we're pretty sure we have allof them, might have missed one.
I'm not one hundred percent sure, but yeah, I'm pretty sure we're getting

(05:58):
all of them. So comics, did you have you read any comics?
Now? I read a couple.Yeah, well, well we'll talk.
Yeah, but there there's a lotmore coming out this week and of course
last week and everything. But Irecommend you check your local comic store to
see what you want to read andwhat they have available for sure. So

(06:20):
kind of let's get into what we'rereading right now. Sam, I'm gonna
have you kind of Sam. Doyou reading comics this week? Finally we
gave you two weeks. We tooka week off so you can catch up
on comics. I read a wholeBe careful not to choke on your aspiration.
That's more than you have the lastfew episodes. So what were they?
Iron Man issue whatever, the latestone was, and the ultimate issue

(06:44):
one it was Iron Man Issue nineteen. That one? Oh yeah, because
this next one is the last onefor the run. Doesn't get technical with
me. I really hope they don'tcare. Came out last week? Up
yet? Yeah? No, wehave not express on your pull list.
It is on my pull list.We just have to get to the story.
It came out last week at thetime of your hearing this. It
comes out this week at the timeof recording this. Oh, so that's

(07:05):
why they haven't been spoiling Okay, cool, because it's in the future still
for me, whoa, it's likethe time stuff we talked about at all.
It's kind of like what it's inthe Ultimates. See little segue there.
Ultimates is interesting. Don't spoil it, you know, I've been waiting
for you to read it so well. I read it good, so I
can spoil it now. No,I got to read it. Oh,

(07:26):
so can you give just give yournon spoiler reactions to the Ultimates. Same
thing. I always do, talkmy way out of it. It's a
good setup, you know it.It is actually a really decent jumping on
point. If you haven't read UltimateInvasion, which I did read it,
but I don't really remember it.This issue does a really good job of
just kind of setting the stage forwhat you need to know for this story.

(07:51):
Very very interesting concept. I'm definitelyinterested in reading the rest of it.
So yeah, I'm happy with it. Okay, before we leave this
part of this segment of the episode, I want to bring up an idea.
But you talk about your stuff. What are you reading right now?
Nate? Right now? I haven'treally been able to read anything else because

(08:11):
I haven't really had many new things. But I did kind of want to
touch on a series that came outthree years ago, so it's a bit
weird to bring it up now,but it's actually just started back up after
a very long hiatus of not knowingit's coming out. And that comic is
Public Domain, which is a veryweird comic series, but it's by Chip

(08:35):
Sidarsky for Image Comics. And whenI was talking about kind of detailing the
more grounded and stripped downside of superheroes, this is kind of where I wanted
to go to with it. Inthe normal sense, it is a superhero
comic, but it isn't about thesuperhero's adventures. It is mainly about the

(08:58):
creat of a comic series and thecreator of a superhero and his two sons
having to figure out how to navigatethis character becoming larger than them with now,
is this what you read or isthis is what I've read? With
movie deals and TV shows and othercomics and stuff getting out of the creator's
control and the Sun's feeling like theycare more about it than the creator himself

(09:20):
does because of just how everything hasended up now, it ended kind of
on a cliffhanger. It was itwas like, whereas the other issues and
then we waited so long and thenI think the last or a couple of
weeks ago. The sixth issue cameout finally after about two or three years,

(09:41):
so I've we've yet to make itto our comic store. I've yet
to been able to pick it up. But that's kind of where I wanted
to go with what we're reading andkind of leading into Captain America. But
well, before we do that, one to talk about. All right,
So, for the first time inseven years, I find myself on a
daily basis having just a little marginin my life, okay, and needing

(10:07):
something other than doom scrolling Twitter. So if I were to start a comic
book series that you guys already have, that we already own, that I
don't have to like buy a bunchof issues for anything or stay up on
I can like read at my leisureas I read. What comic book series

(10:28):
would you recommend I read? Well, it's difficult, are you wanting,
because if you're talking about series thataren't really ongoing that you would have to
keep up with that. That's morethe trade paperbacks and stuff we have,
but you can't get those digitals. So no, I'm talking about like reading
physical Yeah, physical copy there's there'sno doubt about it being Chips Skis Dare

(10:52):
Double Run. Really, there's nothere's no doubt. So you say Transformers,
I haven't read, but he wouldhave to keep up with that Ships
to Darkies Daredevil Run. Yeah,it's about a three year long run.
So that's what is that? Thatwhole thing I got in my call.
Yeah, so there's a lot thatyou have to read. There's a lot
there, and then there's a bigevery So here's what I'm going to do.

(11:13):
So rather than just you know, bagging on Sam for not reading comics
and then and then I don't everread comics, I will if you'll get
those for me. I got toset them apart for me. I will
start reading the chips A Darski's DaredevilRun. So that when we get to
this part of the segment every week, I have something that I can talk
about having read as well. Andthat's something that old guys that maybe haven't

(11:37):
caught and caught up maybe can startlike getting excited about reading about comin Transformers
just kind of more of a joke. You'd probably get more into the Daredevils,
Okay, I think after you getthrough the first or second issue of
Daredevil. You're you're not going toprobably be able to put it down as
well. It's okay, yeah,So outside of that there, it's let's
kind of move on to the bigcomic topic this week and what we are

(11:58):
hoping to expect and capt In AmericaBrave New World. So there's a lot
that happens in the new trailer forCaptain America Enlightened, the Enlightened. Yes,
we need to help him, helphim get excited about this, understand,

(12:22):
And there is so many kind oftopics that they touch on, and
well topics that New Rock Stars andScreen Crush touched on that I and Heavy
Spoilers and heavy Spoilers and heavy bigfan of those, like all of them
did an amazing job and kind ofhelped me understand a lot of what I
missed because I've watched austrailer a fewtimes, but man, there are so

(12:43):
many cuts in it and stuff thatI just did not realize. But then
I see it and I was like, oh wait, I saw that but
never connected it. And there aresome really deep themes that seem to be
going back to the high highs ofthe mc U when it comes to grounded
reality of Captain America The Winter Soldier. Now, there are so many moments
a movie. As we discussed, there's so many movie moments in just this

(13:07):
trailer that dive into the politics ofthe MCU of this world. It seems
like more than probably any of theother MCU projects we've gotten so far.
It seems like politics are are areally huge deal. Oh no, I'm
not brave enough for policy. Butlet's kind of look at something else first.
Let's talk about the big supposed villainof this movie, which is a

(13:31):
feeling about this the Leader. Itseeming like it could be finally, after
ah, he's all over this trailer, he's well, he's like two parts
in the trailer. He has twolittle cut scenes and then a voice line
pretty much is it. But hehad kind of his own little not really
but a post credits tease. Ithink it was still in the main movie

(13:54):
of Bruce Banner's blood kind of drippinginto a cut on his head and his
Oh, you would experience the fullpower of the dark side brain brain expand,
which is like his character. It'sbig, like like big brain green.
Yeah, he's super small, supersmall. That happened and then Yeah,

(14:16):
we're in twenty twenty four now andhave gotten zero zero is or anything
about it in She Hulk. Therewas nothing about it in She Hulk,
so we're nowhere with it. Butit is seeming like he could be the
main villain, which would tie allthe way back to two thousand and eight
The Incredible Hulk, which is agood movie. Actually, The Incredible Hulk
is pretty good. I think thelast time I watched it was the twenty

(14:39):
twelve Avengers Marathon. I think that'sprobably the same time we rewatched it.
I really want to watch it.All I know is whenever I see anything
about that movie, I'm like,I'm disappointed about what they did with Hulk
in the MCU, I know,I mean, it's so whimpy. And
Edward Norton was was a pretty darngood Spanner too, so I enjoyed that.
But shaded Mark, No, noshade at all. He's done an
amazing job. I think just whatthey do with the character right, and

(15:03):
the leader is pretty much the bigHulk villain. He's the you know,
the Joker to Batman, the Venomto Spider Man. You would think it's
abomination, but abomination usually just works. For the Leader, right. So
the Leader, which is a bigsmart dude that's pretty weak. So he's
basically his brain like gets like whathappens to Hulk physically right in because of

(15:28):
the super Soldier serum and the gammaradiation happens to his brain in his mind
in the Leader, right, Andso he's like Hulk level of strength before
a brain very similar to seeing likeall of the possibilities, not in like
looking through time like we see withDoctor Strange and Endgame or in Infinity War,

(15:50):
you know, where he sees thesix or fourteen million different options or
whatever. He literally logically sees allof the different timeline paths, which I
think is a really really interesting idea. And it seems like he's been plotting
to get here for for a verylong time. It seems like he's had
some type of plan, and itmight have helped if he wasn't blipped out,

(16:11):
because that gives him a lot ofopportunity to change things and move his
plan along. And he's pretty muchlike you were mentioning, he's pretty much
the anti Hulk in the Marvel inverseHulk, just the inverse Hulk. Now,
this goes to both of you.But let's start with you, Sam,

(16:32):
How do you feel about this characterbeing the main villain of a Captain
America movie? Yeah, that isa little strange, but honestly, I'm
okay with it because I was confused. I was confused as to where the
heck Red Hulk was going to comeinto this whole story, right, Like
why is well? I mean it'scool, don't get me wrong, super

(16:53):
excited to see Harrison Ford as RedHulk, Like that's gonna be wild,
but why does that tie into toCaptain America? And now it makes sense
there's a villain that's related to Hulkand that is going to bring in the
Red Hulk thing. So I'm okaywith it. I think having a super
smart, bad guy Moriarty level villainis is an okay thing. I would

(17:21):
like to be able to see theleader against Hulk at some point. I
don't know if we'll get that anymore, just based on where that character is
in the MCU, but I amvery excited to see his character come back
because I was disappointed ever since Hulktwo thousand and eight that they never use
the character, because as soon asthat happened in the movie, I think
it was, you know, mysecond or third time watching it, once

(17:41):
I had exposed myself to more Marvel, I was like, oh, that's
the Leader. They're teasing the Leader. I wonder what they're gonna do that,
And then they never did anything withit. So I am very very
excited to see that come back.Well, I think we also we're gonna
see that this is Yes, thisis Captain America, a brave new world,
and we've got you know, SamWilson as Captain America throughout the as
being the primary hero with this, but your secondary superhero and plotline in this

(18:04):
is going to be surrounding Hulk. It's going to be surrounding Red Hulk.
It's going to be I mean,Thunderbolt Ross is president, which we'll talk
about. I'm sure I don't knowhow to looked at the notes. The
ability to speak does not make youintelligence. But he's you know, Harrison
Ford's playing the president or Thunderbolt Ross. We've got we know Betty is it
Betty Betty Ross? Betty? Yeah, Betsy's the one that made the flag.

(18:27):
Do you guys know that? Yeah, you're saying Betty Ross And I
was like, that sounds like somethingfrom American history. But it's Betsy's.
That's one with the Stars circle, right, Yeah, so it's Betty Ross.
Yeah, but we know liv Tyler'scoming back in this movie really to
play Betty Ross is from what Iunderstand. So there's going to be this
subplot of the Hulk you know, storyline finding itself back into this and that

(18:51):
gets me excited because I even watchingyou know, we talked on our last
episode about watching a bunch of theMCU movies, watching the Infinity War and
Endgame. I couldn't be more disappointedin the way that they left Hulk.
Oh Man, Yeah, so disappointing. It's it was rough to see,
especially the difference of that character fromwhere they set him up in the original

(19:15):
Incredible Hulk movie to where and theneven get better in She Hulk. No,
gets worse, kind of worse inShe Hulk. But hopefully that can
all change with this this new movie. And the other big aspect for seeing
this movie is the politics side.Like I mentioned, of just everything going
on. I mean, the nameof the movie is Brave New World It

(19:36):
originally was New World Order, butthat apparently rough Feathers, so they just
went with Brave New world, andit seems to be like a huge plotline
for Sam Wilson is dealing with thepolitics. Like some people mentioned in their
in their breakdown videos, I thinkof a screen crush just detailing the fact
that Sam Wilson is different from cRod because Steve Rogers was able to live

(20:02):
in this persona of Captain America andSam Wilson seems to have to be the
superhero and the political side of CaptainAmerica a lot more to handle those politics.
And so I mean the trailer startswith President Ross saying Captain America is
going to become a new trying he'strying to bring back John Walker idea.
Yeah, I mean it's going tobe an official rank in the US military.

(20:23):
Now, like that's a big deal, which that ties you Thunderbolt Ross
is the is the the cohesive glueto bringing in Sam and Captain America from
the MCU right because of Civil War. Right, so Kobe accords all of

(20:44):
that side of it that that tiesin Super Soldier Serum, all that kind
of stuff, and then the Hulkstuff is obviously Thunderbolt is General Ross as
well, So he's the He's thecohesive glue that brings these two sides of
the Marvel World the universe into onemovie that makes sense, and so I
like that idea. Yeah, itwas. It was really interesting. And

(21:06):
of course Ross being president himself.I mean he he kind of went from
little general dude to then secretary. He was a four star general that's a
deal, Secretary of State, andthen now president, and it seems like
that's the big part of this movieis is Thunderbolt Ross becoming president and then
leading into Ross becoming Red Hulk.Supposedly, we're hoping that that's where they

(21:30):
go, because that's where he isin the comics. And I noticed some
people mention that they're really excited forRed Hulk because he's a villain. And
most of the stuff I've been exposedto with Red Hulton is he's an anti
hero. That's he started out asa villain. He started out as a
villain, and like most anti heroesdo start out as villains, but it
seems like more concurrently and more quicklyhe did switch to that anti hero,

(21:52):
and I do feel like that's wherethey'd be going with this. I don't
think Ross necessarily is a bad guy, and Hulk never was just a bad
Guy Hulk increased, and like it'smentioned in Captain America for as Avenger,
it increases the internal ideologies of theperson that's taking the serum. Now,

(22:15):
the problem with the Hulk serum isit kind of did that a little too
much, and the entire serum wasjust too much and wasn't created correct.
I guess my understanding is that thetype of rays that are used by what's
the professor the doctor in in thefirst Avenger, I mean, I don't
remember his name, but anyway, that the German doctor that brings that makes

(22:37):
Steve what he is. It's adifferent type of what and they made a
mistake and used gamma rays with withBrews and obviously Red Hulk. Yes,
I think it's beta or something.Yeah, it's something like that anyway,
So gamma rays are what causes theproblem. So it increases some stuff.
And I don't think that Ross himselfis necessarily bad. I do think he
has more aggressive of ideologies than BruceBanner himself does in certain ways, and

(23:03):
is more of that soldier type ofaspect rather than scientists than Bruce Banner was.
So I think that we're going tosee a lot of different things,
But I don't believe that he's goingto be a villain in this in this
movie. And so, Dad,how do you feel about the political side
of this this movie? Does itreally feel like we're going back to the
glory days of witch a Soldier andcivil War in the MCU, Yeah,

(23:27):
I do. I think that that'swhere they're gonna end up going. I
think that the you know, Idon't know if you're going to talk about
this, but the Isaiah Bradley stuffwith the opening sequence where Isaiah tries to
kill the president in the trailer, which obviously that's that's a mcguffin, otherwise
they wouldn't have put that in thetrailer as being right, that's like what
sets off the story. This iswhere the fun begins with it. That

(23:49):
goes back to falcon in the WinterSoldier, and that's very political in nature
itself. That goes you know, that's real world stuff. We spent a
lot of time on this show duringthe falcon and Winter Soldier when we were,
you know, talking about that asit was releasing, talking about how
this allowed us that moment in theFalcony Winter Soldier allowed us to have a
conversation about race about the way thatour government treats, you know, treated

(24:11):
race back in the forties and thefifties with the experimentation that they did and
things like that. This this issort of the way that we bring that
in. So so that moment inthis also starts to tie this story together.
And so I think that the politicalelement of it makes the MCU better
than just you know, big superpoweredpeople taking on bad superpowered people and leaving

(24:36):
it at that. I think thepolitics make the story better definitely. And
I think that bringing more into theside of Isaiah Bradley is saw some people
mentioned it seemed like he was morebrainwashed than anything, especially in that trailer,
just probably by the lot. Ithink it's the leader that does something
that triggers him, right, Andit was shown as some more the Isaiah

(24:57):
Bradley attack was shown more and presskind of convention a few months ago,
I think it was CinemaCon, yes, so that was shown more, and
it seemed like there was in thatclip a sound that played that even made
secret Service agents kind of go crazytoo. Oh wow. And we see
Sam Wilson fighting Secret Service agents inthis moment, yeah, pretty much.

(25:19):
And Isaiah Bradley as well. Soit seems like the leaders setting up a
really good plan to exploit some peoplein this series in this movie that are
very vulnerable. I think the beautifulthing about Marvel that sets it apart from
DC is it allows you to havethese cool, big superhero bad guy,

(25:41):
you know, good guy cosmic forcesmoments and the political moments too. You
don't see that, to my knowledge, very much in DC. D C
is very much gods and monsters sortof idea, these large mythological conflicts and
stuff, which, of course thisis nothing wrong with that, but Marvel
allows you to take that kind ofcloser side sometimes I think, yeah,

(26:04):
it definitely does. But I know, I'm very excited to get back to
a more grounded and gritty MCU thatdeals with the more human side, I
guess in some ways, and it'skind of the stuff we've come to love
in the original Captain America movies. And I'm super excited to see what Brave
New World does in twenty twenty fivefor sure. So that'll pretty much do

(26:26):
it. If you aren't familiar yetwith our weekly release schedule. We talk
