(00:00):
This is Tatooine Son. It's apop culture podcast, the only fan podcast
to name a canon Star Wars creatureand to be endorsed by the writer and
the director of The Last Jedi,Ryan Johnson. Are you an angel,
gentlemen? I am very excited torevisit the first Star Wars animated series.
We watched from start to finish asit aired, Star Wars Resistant Where Begins.
(00:28):
Yeah. I really liked the show. It was a ton of fun
and had a lot of potential, and I would have loved to have seen
where Okay save it for the podcast. The series had some very special elements
to it that aren't often focused on. We'll look at those along with you
know, we can also focus inon one of the coolest actors in all
of Star Wars, and we've actuallyhad the privilege of interviewing in the past,
(00:51):
Christopher Sean. That's all Next,This is Tatooine Son. Was the
name of the pork on the MillenniumFalcon Force, the storm in my family.
What do you think his name is? It's a big moment. I
(01:15):
am a Jedi like my father beforeme. Maybe turbis do or do not?
Do? Is? No try Turbis, Pablo. If you're listening to
this live stream, that pork's nameis now Turbis. It's a good Star
(01:42):
Wars name. We're not done yet. These guys recorded Blosso podcast Tatters.
Everybody listen. I'm the one whobrought it up. No, I'm like,
what's been happening though recently within likethe screenings? Oh no, no,
(02:02):
as it comes out, well, okay, as we're recording this,
pulled back the cards out. It'sit's already out when you're hearing this,
but when we're recording it, it'slike a couple of days away still from
when that's going to publicly release onNetflix. I guess June twelfth. This
is when it comes out. Thatcomes out in a couple days. So
for us it's a couple of days. For you, it was like a
week ago, or more a weekand a half ago. Anyway, Man,
(02:25):
it's like right now the Rotten Tomatoescritics score, that's really impressive.
How many reviews? Eight? Maybenot, but the point I'm making,
I mean, like the consistent buzzis that this is amazing. And then
a fun little tie back to whatwe were talking about last episode on Wednesday,
(02:46):
the same team that's doing the animationfor this movie is doing the animation
for Transformers one. It's animation team, so it nic and that ties it
all into Star Wars Wars world. We're all just living in it, all
right. But the reason I bringup Ultraman is because Christopher Schan plays character,
yeah, which is a pretty bigdeal. And he also is in
(03:07):
Star Wars Resistance. So isn't thatcool how that all works together? And
like I like, we just said, it's a Star Wars world, We're
all just living in it. Welcometo tatoin Suns, a pop culture podcast.
We believe that pop culture is themythology of this generation, that there
is a story, it is writtenon our souls, and that these myths
speak to that story. And thatis why we are talking about again,
(03:28):
the only Star Wars animated stas that'sthe only animated series. It takes place
simultaneously with the events taking place inthe Skywalker War was Resistant. You're welcome,
all right, Adriana. Yes,the ability to speak does not make
(03:52):
you intelligence. Yeah, we're excitedto talk about this, but before we
do that, I do want toencourage all of you who are listening to
this podcast right now to help usreach our goal of getting to one hundred
free subscribers on substack. We dolots of stuff during the week on this
This isn't just like we take ourpodcast episodes, put them on substack and
(04:13):
then you get to hear those becauseyou're already listening to those. Mondays,
we talk about what happened at thebox office over the weekend, what new
movies are coming out, so youdon't have to start looking, you don't
need to go find that anywhere else. Subscribe to us on substack. Tuesdays
we talk about the trash Compactor, which basically is where we look at all
the bad, bad, horrible takesthat are happening about these stories right now
Acolte, and then we talk aboutwhy that they're bad takes on that you
(04:36):
know. Of course, Wednesdays we'vegot our episode coming out. Thursdays will
be whatever I feel like talking about, and we'll just keep going from there.
But we'd love for you to subscribeto that and be a part of
our Star Wars community, to oursubstack community where we talk about Star Wars
and all these other things. Enoughthough, enough talking about what we are
going to talk about Let's talk aboutwhat we're talking about, all right,
(04:59):
So this is you know, thisshow was announced. Star Wars Resistance was
announced after we launched our podcast originally, and we got to be around when
it first premiered and watched it andtalked about it and all those other other
things. So it aired Star WarsResistance. It aired on Disney XD,
didn't it. It did Disney XDtwenty eight It was actually raised Disney Disney
(05:23):
Channel, yeah, I remember itwas. It was different because all the
other Star Wars shows were on xD, right, so this was Disney
Channel. Yeahstance. So it airedfrom twenty eighteen through twenty twenty. Of
course, it starred the amazing ChristopherSchawan who played Kuzzudo Ziona. We'll come
back to him in a second. We'll talk about him in a minute.
Josh Brenner who played Nku, ScottLawrence who played Jerrech Jeger, Susy McGrath
(05:46):
played tam Ravora. Justin Bridge playedthe amazing droid Bucket on that. Donald
Fazen played Hype phasin which got hischaracter was just basically him in Star Wars.
With that, and then Stephen Stantonwho was Griff Holleran, but we
also got to interview him as well. So we've interviewed cast members. He
(06:09):
played Obi Wan Kenobi in Twins,Sarcus and Tarkan and all of those,
but Christopher Sean, I mean,it's fun to think about the story with
that. If you if you've beenfollowing the podcast from the beginning, you
know that. We tried to connectwith him at Star Wars celebration in Chicago
in twenty nineteen and it took tothe literally the show was over and he
(06:30):
messaged us finding on tech and he'slike, please come find us, and
it was it was literally a fivesecond conversation and they were turning off the
lights. They were like kicking himout, kicking us out. But we
got to meet him, and thena few years later we got to interview
him for Potathon and he came onas our guest and we talked about that.
He talked about becoming night Wing inthe game. Whatever happened with Gotham
Nights on that game. What wasyour thoughts on It? Was good?
(06:54):
I enjoyed it. It had itcould have been a little bit better,
a little bit more streamlined, butI really did enjoy the game and didn't
deserve the hate it. God.Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
I really enjoyed it. The storywas good too, so it was
really good. Actually, it's cool. Now. One of the things that
was really interesting about Star Wars Resistance, and I think is what makes it
unique, is that it's it's theonly we talked about this a minute ago,
(07:15):
but it's the only Star Wars animatedseries to take place simultaneously concurrently with
events in a setting within the Starthe Skywalker saga. So that allowed us
to have cameos on this that weretied into the sequel trilogy. You had
Gwendolyn Christie reprising her role of theSpasma in this. You had Dom kno
(07:40):
Gleason playing General Hawks. Of courseAnthony Daniels. Any chance Anthony Daniels has
to EAC three p O, he'llplay, He'll play that character. So
it was it was a really funexperiment within the Star Wars animated world.
I'd love to get your guys asjust your general thoughts on this. I'll
start with you, Bbna, whatwas your thoughts on Star Wars and since
(08:01):
you kind of started to allude toit earlier, I enjoyed the series I
really did. I thought it wasfun. It was nice to see these
characters again. I'm always a fanof seeing characters kind of in just the
general universe of Star Wars. Schoolseem on like a mining rig kind of
space station area, doing racing andall this stuff with Starship. It was
just a really cool concept that Ifelt like could have been fleshed out a
(08:24):
bit more. I know that theywere kind of constrained with just some reviews
of people saying it's too childish,it's too kitty, which feels like a
really weird criticism when we're talking aboutStar Wars four kids. I think George
Lucas has gone on record about thatI were used to the Clone Wars,
that they were used to Clone Wars. The animation was beautiful. Nobody can
(08:46):
deny no. Animation was fantastic.I loved the style, and I love
the characters. Tam kind of turningto the Empire at the end of season
one was interesting, Kads always tryingto get her back to the good like
the Rebels, Resistance. All ofthat was really good. I loved all
of that storyline and just really enjoyedit. Just wish the Star Wars and
(09:09):
Lucasfilm would have not listened to thehaters and just make sure that the show
can keep going and breathe. Idon't like it's difficult for a show to
really tell a lot when it's ina format like this in two seasons.
So yeah, I think I getthe vibe that it was held back.
It was not through any fault oftheir own. I think you know,
(09:35):
like you said, Dad, thisseries was coming out concurrent to the events
of the Skywalker saga. This isnot going to go the way you think,
and that puts it in any uniquese trilogy specifically. Yeah, but
I think that also came with itunique challenges too, because, as we
all know, the sequel trilogy pasthands multiple multiple times, so nobody really
(09:56):
could tell where things were gonna gonext. And I think that hurt the
writers of this show because it's notthe same writing team. I mean,
there's no way it's gonna be thesame writing team. I don't even think.
I don't remember who's credit it,but I doubt this is the same
team that even worked on like CloneWars or Rebels. They were different.
It was it was a very differentteam, right, So I think they
were being fed certain information and givencertain things or told to fit within certain
(10:22):
lines, and I think that hinderedthem in a way. I think they
set up so many great storylines andgreat places for them to take it,
especially at the end of season one, but I think they were held back
with some stuff. I just feltlike it was doomed from the start,
and I think with them being onDisney Channel, they probably wanted to show
(10:43):
that could be geared or you know, for the younger audience, but I
think in a way that also heldthem back from being able to do certain
things that they wanted to do aswell. I'm not complaining. I think
it's fine. I don't have anyproblem with them making more shows for the
younger audience. I mean, Idon't think that's quite accurate. Gravity Falls
originally aired on Disney Channels, Sookay, fair, it's not a problem.
(11:07):
It's just I feel like it wasa doom from the start. They
didn't they weren't given what they neededto to really fully realize their vision for
this show. And there was alot of potential shown in every single episode,
and it just is what it isat this point, and it's always
something that is fun and I hopethat some younger kids are able to watch
(11:31):
it and get into Star Wars. There's a lot of people that watched,
you know, like we spoke aboutit last Friday's episode when we talked about
Star Wars Rebels. For us,this was how Star Wars was introduced to
you guys in a real significant way, right the way you got Yeah,
Rubert Rebels was how you guys grewinto it. And for a lot of
a lot of fans, this isthis is their entry point. Was was
(11:54):
Star Wars Resistance, and it's gota huge huge fan base of younger kids
who were getting into the sequel trilogythat engaged with this story because it ran
concurrent to the events of Force Awakens, Last Jedi, and the Rise of
Skywalker. With it, it didhave the shortest run of all the Star
Wars animated series, but even thoughit was only two seasons, it really
(12:18):
does have some of the most impactfulmoments in the Skywalker saga taking place,
but they're just being viewed from avery unique perspective. I mean, the
whole the whole episode the series itselflaunches with Kzudo Zeono played by Christopher Shawn,
(12:43):
on a mission for the Resistance beingrecruited by Podamor and to go and
be a plant on the Colossus totry to uncover and I'm not even trying
to I'm trying to remember what wasthis specific, like, what was he
trying to uncover? There was there? I don't remember off the top of
my head. I'm pretty sure hewas trying to uncover some types of plans
(13:07):
or something. Don't get technical withme if I can remember quickly. And
the Senator had something to do withgold Buckethead dude, and so they were
trying to figure out the connections thereto maybe see if they could dive further
into the first order. Yeah,I can't remember how it all plays out,
but but he goes undercover on theColossus with this racing team on there,
(13:31):
and that's because I'm it's coming backto me. He wasn't ever on
the classes to begin with. Hewas originally in the Resistance, right,
and then was put on the classes. That's right, right, And so
you get you get sort of thisthis this race of the week type thing
that's going on in the first severalepisodes of season one with it, but
(13:52):
then it shifts away from you know, these fun events that are happening on
a week are cool, and theywere awesome. Griff Hollerin was the coolest
raiser there. I'm sorry, andI always wish that we understood that story
a little bit more with Griff andwith some of these characters with it.
Again, just feel like they weren'table to flesh it out enough with it.
(14:13):
But it ends up. The endof season one is literally we get
to witness the destruction of Hasney andPrime by Kaz from the Colossus. He
sees it in a transmission that's goingon there. And the reason that that's
so impactful is because his dad,who he and his dad have a strained
(14:37):
relationship from this or from some thingsthat had happened earlier. He and his
dad. His dad is on Hausneyand Prime is what he thinks, right,
Well, his dad's a senator.His dad's a senator, and that's
what the seat of the Republic is, and he assumes his dad is on
Hasney and Prime. And so wesee him witnessing his father's death through this.
(15:03):
What was the emotions like for youguys when we kind of got to
that and it was actually happening andwe're seeing the events of the Force Awakens
playing out in animation with General Hawksdoing his famous speech and all of that.
What was that like for you,Sam? Yeah, I mean that
was kind of the moment where Iwas like, oh wow, this got
real, you know, because ithad all it had been loosely tied to
(15:26):
the larger universe, but now ithad really like we know this place where
this is in the story and howit's connected. Right, so we finally
got to have some death and likeyou know, we said, this is
the most significant thing that's happened upuntil this point. I mean really for
overall this for the series. Soat this point I was like, Okay,
(15:48):
now now we're going with things. It was pretty exciting. What were
your thoughts dream those those moments there? It was really cool to see the
perspective of Hasse and Prime being destroyed, you know, not in the main
characters of Force Awakens. It wasreally awesome to see how that was a
broader the broader from the general publicof what was going on. That was
(16:11):
awesome and force the rammifications for that. For Kaz, it was just definitely
a turning point in the series thathelped a lot well, you know,
spoiler alert that Kaz's dad was noton Hausey and Prime. Sorry. One
thing I do want to bring upkind of a point that I just noticed
that I think this show kind ofhelps accentuate is you know, everybody kind
(16:33):
of not everybody. But there arecriticisms saying that, oh, episode seven
is just a repeat of episode fourbecause they just blow up more planets in
the Skywalkers right right, you know, it's just a bigger death story.
It blows up more planets. No, you got to think Oldron wasn't really
that impactful of a planet in theoverall galaxy. It was you know,
(16:53):
it didn't have any impact. Thiswould be like it was a core world.
It was a core world, butthere was no it was just Aldram.
You know. You get to thisand they basically, I mean,
it would be like destroying Washington dC. In our world. You know
it is Oh, I see whatyou're saying. I see what you're saying.
(17:14):
This is the political center of thegalaxy at this is the home of
the New Republic, right. Imean that would imagine that would be what
it would be like for us,is if we watched Washington d C get
completely destroyed, every everything, allthe houses and stuff. You know,
So I think this show kind ofin a way helps accentuate that fact that
(17:36):
you wouldn't be able to pick upmaybe just from watching the movies. Yeah,
it was, you know, it'sit's it's interesting. I think that
it is in neat also to seehow a great choice this character of Kaz
and his father, which we meetearly on and we see a couple of
times throughout the rest of the series. His father, Senator Hamado Ziono.
(17:59):
We actually it Senator Ziono in anepisode of Asoka, and we don't like
him. He's a he's a bureaucrat, he's a meani well, he's just
very he against the main characters, and he's very antagonistic towards the goals that
we want to see happen. He'snot necessarily a bad no. No,
(18:22):
I don't know. I thought hewas a bad guy with it. But
but it's funny. So the seasonone, as we kind of talked about
there, it culminates with the eventsat the close of The Force Awakens,
And one of the things that wasunique about the sequel trilogy was that the
Last Jedi picks up on the heelsof the Force awakens and season two of
(18:45):
Star Wars Resistance does the same thing. It just continues on and watches.
We get to see some of theevents and the and the trans the things
that transpire with the Last Jedi andthe Rise of sky Walker taking place at
the same time as the events ofseason two of Star Wars Resistance are going
(19:07):
on there. So there are somereally huge connections between the series, uh
and the larger Skywalker saga. Butthere were also a lot of and some
pretty important missed opportunities. I gota feeling about this. So do you
(19:33):
guys recall kind of what our bigtheory was. Oh man, I remember
talking about like we were, youknow, in the events leading up or
the you know, the weeks leadingup to the Rise of Skywalker. Every
single trailer that I can recall hadthat one scene where like all of the
ships show up on extra the Avengersendgame moment of Star Wars. Yeah,
and we were all convinced. Ofcourse, we were watching the trailer bakedowns
(19:56):
like oh are these four pixels thecollopstion bb nateh bless you, oh god,
you know all those like the clickbaitthumbnails where they put a red circle
on like this like smudge in thebottom right that they probably photoshopped in it,
and they're like, this is theColossus, and you're like, whoa.
We were convinced that there's gonna bethis moment where they're all showing up
(20:18):
and they're reading out their call signsor something, and we end up seeing
the live action you see Christopher Seanplaying We went through. We were like
this act Griff hollerind played by StephenStanton in live action and all of these
different because we were like, allthese voice actors could play their character in
live action. So we were convincedthat we were going to see them make
just a short little cameo appearance likehey, it's me you know Blue too,
(20:42):
showing up, you know, callingin or whatever, right, just
like a quick call out like youwouldn't any of the other Star Wars movies.
We were convinced that that was gonnahappen, and it sadly didn't.
It was just ignorant. It wasmentioned in the book. That's the thing
that's interesting is that moment that weand that's what's fun looking back for me
(21:06):
is while that did not happen inthe movie itself, that event happens in
the novelization. Kaz is there. All of them are there. They're talking
about it. You're talking about theColossus, You're they're calling out their call
(21:26):
signs with this, and this ishappening in the Rise of Skywalker with it.
It was, it was. Itwas a really cool thing for us
to to kind of see what whatthe vision was, but also disappointing because
I thought you were that would havebeen the first time we saw animated characters
(21:47):
make the jump make the jump tolive action. We saw that with ah
Soka finally season two of The Mandalorian. It's happened, of course in multiple
times since then with Okaton and allof these other characters. But I feel
like they wanted to do this, but they were They just held back out
(22:10):
of uh, hesitation or fear orsomething like that people would know who these
characters are. What do we dobecause you show random Porkin's nobody knew who
that was. I mean, granted, this was the first Star Wars say,
but you know what, I'm like, that never stopped them before.
I don't, right, So whatdo you guys think as you know,
as we as we kind of beginto wrap up our conversation on this show
(22:32):
on Resistance here, what do youthink are some of the huge connections or
or impacts that this series has madeon the greater Star Wars universe. The
thing that sucks is is not notmuch. I can't think of much that
was where I was kind of goingwith it too, And that's sad because
it could have had a lot.It could have really had a lot of
(22:56):
impact on the sequel trilogy. Itcould have had an impact on what happened
afterwards, and I would love tosee what happened to the Resistance Crew after
as Skywalker. I'd love some more, but I don't think we'll ever get
that. Do you know when SkeletonCrew takes place again, i asked that
question. Skeleton Crew is part ofthe Man Man Over, so yeah,
(23:18):
it's going to take the line ofwork. I was hoping maybe like the
Colossus stumbles across this stranded group atsome point and you get to see that,
but unfortunately that's not gonna work either. Done. Yeah, So what
are your thoughts on on kind ofwhat could have been? Or yeah?
I think it kind of you know, I don't want to sound like a
hater or anything, but it kindof sums up my overall thoughts on how
(23:41):
the Skywalker saga ended was missed opportunities. I think there was so much there,
both for this series and the overallyou know that that era, There
was so much that could have beendone, and it just it just didn't.
They didn't capitalize. They just didn'tstick the land They just didn't stick
the landing. Yeah, or theyor it didn't even in some ways,
(24:03):
it almost feels like they didn't eventry. And that's disappointing because I really
like there were Maybe it's, youknow, my head cannon getting in the
way, but I don't even thinkit's a head cannon thing. I think
it's a they played it safe ina lot of ways, and Star Wars
is not about playing it safe.I mean, think about the making of
Star Wars episode you know, thefirst Star Wars. None of that was
(24:26):
played safe. George had to takeso many risks to get that happen,
and look what happened as a result. And so I loved this show,
and I think if it were givena better chance, it could have it
could have really become one of thoseones that's talked about in the same breath
as Clone Wars and right, Iagree that, yeah, it is.
(24:48):
It is a little heartbreaking to thinkthat what might have been there will never
really know for sure. Well,I guess that's the way we'll wrap up
our conversation Star Wars. I wouldlove to see the characters show up,
want them, and I want morePumpkinhead. Yeah, yeah, we love
(25:11):
Pumpkinhead. It also had BB eightin the entire series. We forgot to
mention him, but he Yeah.So let's you know, kind of keep
this going next week. We'll talkmore on Monday again. Our release schedule.
You've you're getting used to it.Hopefully you're falling into a rhythm with
this first of all or not firstof all, but but definitely not last
(25:32):
of all, but not so much. Definitely want to acknowledge this. Thank
you so much for being a partof Thank our community and for being a
part of of this this six sixand a half almost seven year journey that
we've been on. For us tohave released, you know, not released
an episode for six months and thento come back and find ourselves charting out
(25:56):
in the top one hundred in theUnited States in on Apple Podcasts and entertainment
news, and to seeing the thingsthat are going on with this. This
is not because of us. Imean, this is a train wreck from
start to finish for the most part, but it's because of you. And

Wednesday we're going to talk about morecomic books, the ones that are coming
out and the things that these twoknuckleheads are reading like crazy and talking about.
And I'll sit back and just listenlike a lot of you as well.
But I think it's fun. Here'swhat I this week's episode on the
comic books. I was thinking aboutthis earlier when you to hear you guys
talk about those comics and find themythologies within them, not from like an
(27:04):
ancient mythology, but the big themesand the stories and the message the messages
behind it is so much fun.Thank you for for for you know,
being able to give me a chanceto watch you guys, listen to you
guys do that, and then nextweek we'll finish up our series on Star
Wars Animation. Uh talk about thebat batch with it. And I know
(27:26):

Man forth to be with you,to be with you, with you
all the way. This party's over. I like that. Okay, don't
get take a coal with me,joy please,
