the executive director. So we get ready to chat with him.
We're going to be getting the inside scoop on Cees

(02:18):
twenty twenty five, y'all. Can you believe it's almost You're
already including the Eureka Park contest. Remember Steve and I
talked about it recently on an episode a few weeks back,
a couple of months ago. I was going to talk
about other exciting opportunities for those in the tech industry.

(02:39):
So you're ready to get down to brass tax or,
as to say, brass tariffs. First and foremost, what exactly
is the tariff? Well, simply put, it's a tax imposed
by a government own goods imported from other countries. Think

(02:59):
of it as as a border fee. And if you
ever go out of town, different countries. You have to
pay things when you bring things back right. Well, the
United States, they've had a long and complicated history with tariffs.
Remember that old MySpace or Facebook relationship status is complicated. Well,

(03:19):
tariffs in the United States is complicated. Early in US
history it was relied on heavily when they came to
tariffs to generate revenue. In fact, before the income tax,
tariffs are one way and one main source of funding
for the government. Founding father Alexander Hamilton, he was a

(03:41):
big proponent of teriffs and to protect young American industries,
and this was called protectionist. So this approach continued through
the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth centuries. But
then came what was called that I remember in my

(04:04):
history lesson was the Smooth Howly Tariff Act of nineteen thirty.
Now that act dramatically, dramatically raised tariffs on thousands of
imported goods. Well, what result will Many economists believe that
this contributed to the severity of the Great Depression? Remember

(04:28):
that what happened was other companies are the countries, I'm sorry,
started to retaliate with their own tariffs and goods for
goods and trade they cause a lot of problems. Now,
learning from this, after World War Two, there were this
global push towards reducing the trade barriers. The General Agreement

(04:53):
on Tariffs and Trades the GATT was and later the
World Trade Organization w was formed to promote free trade
and discourage this protectionalist type of attitude of policies like
high tariffs. And this led to significant decline in the

(05:14):
average UF tariff rates and throughout the later half of
the twentieth century. But as we all know, history does
not always move in a straight line, does. It may
curve around, it may bend around. So in recent years
we've seen a resurgence of tariffs as a tool for

(05:37):
trade negotiations, particularly with China. Now, these tariffs have impacted
wide range of goods. What are some of those goods
and many of the goods in the tech products that
we use, smartphones, laptops, and computers. Remember how high cput

(06:00):
chips got Remember that during the pandemic and they're still
high today. There's a big question what impact do these
tariffs have on the economy. Well, it's really a complex
issue with arguments on both sides. Now, the supporters of
tariffs agree that they protect domestic industries and jobs and

(06:25):
can be used to really leverage trade deals. You can
be used as leverage. Now what about the critics. They
argue that tariffs raise prices for consumers, hurt businesses that
rely on imported goods, and can lead to retaliatory terraffs

(06:46):
from other countries, and it can really harm global trade
and economic growth. Now what about where we live in
the tech world and we are in the tech zone. Well,
tariffs can increase the costs of manufacturing and ultimately lead

(07:10):
to higher prices for consumers. And consumers do not lack
higher prices. See companies like Apple, HP and L they've
been impacted by their recent tariff increases. We fill that pain,
don't we See That's why it's important for us to

(07:31):
always remember that the global economy is interconnected. See changes
in any trade policy like tariffs and can have a
ripple effect throughout the world. And remember we're just coming
out of a pandemic. So what are your thoughts? What
do you think about tariffs? Are they a necessary tool

(07:55):
to protect American interest? Are a harmful barrier to free trade?
