Il Cristianesimo è andato diffondendosi in Norvegia in modo costante, ma graduale. Due furono i fattori cruciali in tale processo: da un lato, i legami con l’Europa attraverso le spedizioni vichinghe ed i rapporti commerciali; dall’altro, l’appoggio offerto alla Chiesa dai sovrani. Ma alla fede cristiana la monarchia norvegese aderì tardi, molti secoli dopo rispetto al Vecchio Continente: a lungo rimase infatti una roccaforte pagana politicamente divisa in piccoli regni.
