Nel 1243 venne fondata la Diocesi di Warmia. Per secoli i suoi Vescovi furono in grado di mantenere una relativa indipendenza tra i due poteri, Stato teutonico e Regno polacco. Essi ed il Capitolo di Warmia non ebbero soltanto autorità ecclesiastica, ma anche laica ed avevano anche dei castelli.
