The game just ended about an hour ago.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
We've got postgame interviews from both the Kitchener Rangers and
the London Nights, including head coach Dale Hunter and defenseman
of the Year in the Ohl Sam Dickinson, as well
as we'll hear from U See a Hocus from the
Kitchener Rangers side, as well as Luca Romano, who had
a good game tonight. With that said, I'm gonna welcome
on my guest co host tonight that was nice enough
(02:05):
to stay around and join us tonight, and that would
be the great Jim van Horn, the radio color commentator
for the London Nights on nine eighty CFPO alongside the
great Mike Stubbs. Jim, thanks so much for joining us tonight.
You joined us on the Round two preview show when
the n Nights were going up against the Eerie Otters.
Obviously they were able to get through that series and
(02:26):
four and now they're facing the Kitchener Rangers in Game
one of this best of seven Western Conference Championship series.
Knights win this one by a five to two score.
Your initial reaction, We're gonna get to all the game
stats and everything, but what did you think of the
game itself?
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Well, the Knights used the rest wisely, didn't they. They
came in with a lot of energy in the first period.
I had a four to nothing lead, including another one
of their things they've been able to do in the playoffs,
they score late in periods, and they did it again,
four nothing after one and then hold on for the
five to win.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
So did the.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
Question rust or rest, as it has been long questioned.
The rest seemed to do the Nights well. They came
out with great energy and I thought the Kitchen Rangers
showed some effects of the winsor seven game series. So
build the big four nothing lead and then after that
Knights aren't going to give you too many scoring chances.
(03:22):
Luca Romano had a couple of nice shots, and yet
the Knights were able.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
To hold on five to two.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
Austin Elliot had a good game and goal made some
saves when the game was kind of in question, still
lots of time left, he was there. But overall, I
think the Knights have to be happy with their start,
and you know, the Rangers have to feel the leave
this game feeling pretty good too. I think they can say,
honestly into each other. Look, we've been there before, guys.
(03:50):
They threw their best at us in the first period,
and really we were even after that. And I think
the game on Sunday is this going to be the
game might be the game of the series. I think
London is gonna have to be ready and right from
the opening puck drop on Sunday. And of course we've
(04:10):
got the kitchen or London spice. The spiciness is already there.
The rivalry, the pushing and shoving, the coaches are going
at it, it's it's it's the hockey playoffs that we've
come to expect between these two teams.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Oh yeah, we're gonna hear about it all in the
in the postgame interviews a little bit later, Jim. But yeah,
you talked about, you know, the Rangers, uh, you know
the second half of that game when they had the
really mix up the line combinations, when when Humphreys went out.
It was definitely I think they played better in the
second part of that game, especially in the third period.
You can say they've got someone men. I'm going into
(04:44):
Sunday a major game two there. If they're able to
to have a bounce back performance. But we'll get into
it with the lineup first. Gym anything that of note
for you with the lineup and o van Gorp was out,
so Van Bommel came in for for him in the
in the lineup there, you know, any thing other than
that that caught your eye.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Obviously missile Jevick missing still from from the Rangers. That's
a big part of their attack. The rest of the
lineup no, pretty much, pretty much the same as it
has been on the on the Kitchener side as well.
The only thing with that lineup is just how worn
out they were from the seven game series battle against Windsor.
They certainly maybe showed some of that in the first period,
(05:24):
but once you get into that, you know, your body
gets into the rhythm of that competition. They played a
much better second.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
And third before we get into the game stats, Jim,
because it started off right away you mentioned, you know,
the intensity of the fans here, the rivalry, it is
what it is. But then when it's at the Western
Conference Final, it's elevated on the highest stage. We forty
seconds into the game, major hit behind the Kitchener net
and it's Casper Halton and you know, cleaning the clock
(05:53):
of Humphreys on the Kitchener side, and again he was
down for quite a while, had to be helped off
the ice, Kitcheners without their number one center forty seconds
into the game. So coach ucijjocus really had to do
some line juggling there. But you know, what was your
from your vantage point call in the game, What did
you think of that play right away?
Speaker 4 (06:12):
Well, I mean it was reviewed obviously, I believe as
mac nickel was right there watching it, he was in
good position to see what the what the hit was.
No call was made initially, they collected themselves, went to
the referee circle. I think there was a discussion. Halton
(06:36):
was given five that gave them the open the door
to the review and they got the tablet out looked
at it and Halton it was that interesting moment where
Halton gots pointed out of the box which way is
he gonna go?
Speaker 5 (06:50):
Is he going to the room or is he going
to the bench.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
He went to the bench. They waved off the penalty.
So from the league point of view, it was executed
on the ice as just as they do and just
as they want to in the books and no penalty
was called, and obviously that has upset the Rangers. And
here we have the voices of voices of spring. As
(07:14):
long as I've been around hockey, there's never been a
team totally happy with the officials call. But the league
got what they needed a review, and once the review
is made, I mean, you you move on.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
It's been pretty textbook this year, gym as far as protocol.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
Yeah, and I M nobody likes to see anybody missing
any time, and we hope the best for Humphreys and
all that. So that said, I mean there was injuries
to you know, when he fell and helmet came off,
and you just don't want to see anybody hurt and
(07:55):
go off like that.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
No, absolutely, Christian Humphries is a big time player for
this Rangers team ten points in his twelve playoff games
for them as their number one center. And again no
update really on his status as of now, but he
didn't finish the game for the Rangers, and knowing played
in that forty seconds to begin the game. And again
there's gonna be vantage points on each side, Jim. That's
the way it is, right the Kitchener fans or the
(08:18):
Kitchener organization's going to see it one way. The London organization,
London fans are going to see it another way. You know,
that's just the way it is. You see how many
times in hockey where there's differing opinions and the referees
have to make the toughest the toughest call, and it's
never They're never gonna make everybody one hundred percent happy.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
These are the best referre. We've only got two series left.
These are the best officials that the OHL can offer.
All these clubs are part of the league.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
They are the league.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
And if it's if they're upset with the officials, I
mean London wants wanted to look they thought the dear
Coolo hit was late and Barkie ends up injuring that
doesn't look good for London at this moment. We'll have
to wait and see. But again the voices of Spring,
there's never been a coach totally happy and the history
(09:06):
of hockey with the officiating.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
In the playoffs, Nope, it's never, never, one hundred percent
that somebody's going to be pleased with officiating. And they
have a really tough job, as you mentioned, you know,
the best in the business. Right now with only the
two series left playing in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs.
We'll get into it, Jim with the game stats. London
led in the shot department forty one twenty four. That
was really based off that first period that you mentioned.
(09:30):
The Rangers kind of fought back in the second and
third to make it more even, but twenty one eight
in the first period, and that was the bigger difference.
We'll get in the scoring summary. But it was four
to zero on the score sheet and on the shot
clock twenty one to eighteen, but it finishes forty one
to twenty four.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
Probably quality scoring chances would have been about the same,
almost like about a two to one ratio, just in
if I'm just going by my eyes and measuring zone time.
Speaker 5 (09:56):
And Jackson Parsons.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
The more busy of of the goaltenders, but that's not
to say Austin Elliott wasn't good. I think it's just
as tough to go long stretches maybe without seeing a
hard chance. And boy, there was a period just after
the halfway point in the first when London's up three
nothing and Kitchener had on the same shift like a
(10:21):
couple of really good chances Humphrey from that position on
his on the left wing side with that right shot,
got a great shot away and Elliott kicked out a pad,
so he had tough chances to handle at key points
of the game. And that's been his story in the playoffs,
those timing saves when the Knights are in a position
(10:41):
where okay, a few things defensively are breaking down and
a goal at this moment or that would be critical.
He's been able to make a lot of saves in
the playoffs, having won a nine in a row.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Only lost one game.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
Well yeah, yeah, yeah, kind of his.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Thing and uh yeah, well I've got something about that
in the scoring summary with Austin Elliott, you know, being
able to make some big saves when London needed him to.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
It could have changed the hides of this game.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
But moving further here with the power play, kitchener Oh
for four, London one for three on the power play
that Casper Halton and goal was their power play, their
third goal of the game kitchen er Oh for four.
But again later on in the game, when you get
a power play, you know, it's it's a little bit
tougher because the game's sort of out of reach. But
did any did anything catch your eye from either team's
(11:31):
man advantage tonight, Well.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
From from London's point of view, you know, they early
on they they have that they kept feeding Halton and
Halton on the on the left wing side with that
right shot, and he has learned to, you know, really
try and grow that it's not just a one time
or teams can close that down, and they started to
(11:54):
and he on the on the goal, he stopped the
puck god who took maybe a little step inside and
took a risk shot, and I thought that was it.
He's you know, he's learning to kind of throw a
little wrinkles into his game like that, and I think
that's what you have to do. Very few players that,
I think one no Vechkin can live just on that
(12:15):
on that one timer and just stand outside. I mean,
he's just so good at it. But Halton has grown
his game into a better scorer than he has just
a shooter. So that's one power play thought. As far
as penalty kill, Knights did a pretty good job doing that.
Both teams actually blocked a lot of shots. I mean,
that's what the Conference finals is all about, blocking shots,
(12:36):
getting sticks in lanes, and I think despite.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
The five to win.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Again, from London's perspective, I think there's there's got to
be a feeling in there we can we can play better.
You know, there were a few bobbles defensively, but I
think obviously the health of Barkie is the number one
thing that we'll have to answer for Sunday. But as
far as the way London played, yeah, I think you know,
(13:02):
they loved their first period and we're okay with their
second and maybe not parts of it they would like.
But I think on special teams they would be happy
with not allowing the Kitchen Arrangers a power play goal
because they have a great power play and Pridham is
that trigger man and he is going to play in
(13:23):
the National Hockey League with that quick release and shot
from this and he's good playmaker too, so I've been
impressed with him in all the matchups with London this year.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
So those are my thoughts on the special teams.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Halton AND's goal reminded me of the one that got
waved off an Eerie where it was the series clinching
goal that got waved off after the review for the
off side. He kind of, you know, took a second
waited kind of bit the goaltender bit a little bit,
thinking he's going to take that one time, and then
he risted it up top on Charlie Burns. Again, nobody
even knows it existed because it was called back and
(13:57):
then Samuel Riley scored the actual game winner later on.
But that was reminiscent of that that he's kind of
added to his toolbox.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
Yeah, and also you know he can make plays. He
also you know, plays physical, and you know he's growing
his game. And that's what you have to do when
you're when you're in this league, your second round, picking
that Shark's team has a lot of good prospects and
looks like they have a bright future.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Face offs tonight in favor of London thirty nine thirty
sixty even the best man on the dot for the
Knights thirteen of twenty four for Sam O'Reilly, eight of
fourteen for Jacob Julian and seven of eighteen for Will Nicol.
Casper Halton was four or six coming in as a
winger on the Kitchener side. Luke Ellenis thirteen to twenty seven,
Luca Romano eleven of twenty four, and Cam Mercer seven
(14:45):
of seventeen. Anything stick out to you from the face
off tonight?
Speaker 4 (14:49):
Not not really, it looks like you know that's about
even O'Reilly A good good night on the faceoff dot.
The first London goal was probably the result of a
face off win offensive zone face off for London. They
win a draw, it immediately goes back to cam Allen.
He makes a nice move to the right to open
(15:11):
up a lane and then hits Land and Sim for
the deflection. So that was a goal that was kind
of a direct result of a face off win. And
trying to think of who might who would have been
the second assist on that would have been the face
off winner.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
It was Land and Sim.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
And and Sim got the goal, but the face off
one was probably Jesse Nurmi maybe stepped in I don't know,
but maybe it went Maybe it wasn't directly off the
face off. I don't believe it was seconds after the
face off win that London scored that goal.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
It was, And I've got thoughts about that in a second,
because I actually wrote it down because it was an
interesting play resulting in why Land and Sim was in
that spot.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
So I do have that written down. I want to
get your reaction to that.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
As we move on to the scoring summer, you mentioned
that Land and Sim goal that was the opening goal.
As you mentioned, you know cam Allen taking that point
and the reason Land and Sim was in that position,
Jim was because Jacob Julian got tossed out of the
out of the faceoff dot. So Land and Sim came
in for the faceoff, won it back and that's why
he was looked like the center on the play and
(16:14):
cam Allen was able to find him for the redirection.
So that play doesn't happen if Jaob Julian doesn't.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
Get kicked out of the faceoff dot.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
It's a common thing, kicking out of face a lot
of a lot of guys. Get you mentioned Halton took
six tonight. I don't think you know that's probably what happened,
is he he's in there, but that's you saw the play.
I mean, it was a big face off win for
the London Nights and seconds later the Bucks.
Speaker 5 (16:37):
In the net.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
It's an early goal a couple minutes in. This crowd
is right into it. They I mean they were loud
in the anthem. They kept it going and then when
Sim scored, it exploded again. So that's a big start.
I mean, you look at the records of these teams
when you get the first goal. Both these teams are
undefeated in the playoffs when you when they got the
(17:00):
first goal, and getting that first goal with this crowd
critical in the result of this game.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
I think two minutes and eight seconds into the game,
after the delay for Humphreys having to be helped off
the ice, the crowd gets right back into it at
the two to eight mark, and shortly after we only
had to wait a minute and seven seconds if my
math is correct there and it's Sam Dickinson.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
Get you take.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
He comes down from the point, takes a shot, it
gets blocked, and somehow the puck bounces back to him
and he's able to take a risk shot up high.
Sometimes the hockey gouds are with you where you're able
to pick up your own rebound. And Sam Dickinson, obviously
this it's been a big week for him. San Jose
Shark's prospect of the year, always Shell Defenseman of the Year,
and the first of a big night for him in
(17:46):
Game one of the West Final.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
Sky point to Max Kaminski, a player from the early
part of the nineteen hundreds and Sam won the trophy
as top Defenseman. And maybe that was Max's hand at work,
because that was a funny rebound, and it was a
rebound that went well out. I mean it wasn't like
it was two feet in front of the net. It
(18:08):
came right out to Sam. Second try was a dandy
little traffic in front, got over the glove Parsons under
siege in the early going, and credit to him for
just kind of hanging in there. A guy's tough mentally,
and even though the Knights would score two more after that,
(18:29):
tough man, he stayed in this game and he kept
kept battling hard and taking every shot on.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
He led in two goals in the first three shots
Jim and then again as a goalie, being able to
find a rhythm makes them saves. It's hard to do
in a scenario like this, in a hostile environment against
the Knights, when they're just firing on you.
Speaker 5 (18:47):
He stole a game.
Speaker 4 (18:48):
He stole a game against London in a playoff series
three years ago, I think when he was like seventeen,
you know, when the Rangers won the two seven match
a couple of few years ago with the Potisian goal,
in Game seven, but Parsons was terrific in that series too.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
London gets their power play goal, as Jim alluded to,
Casper Halton in there with that waiting rister kind of
faking out Parsons thinking he's going to go for that
one time er, Sam Dickinson and Easton Cowen with the
assists on that goal, and it's three nothing at that point,
six minutes and twenty three seconds in, and again that's
where you think, you know, the next goal is going
to be critical here, because if the Kitchener can just
(19:28):
get one to kind of stop this thing, to make
it a three to one game rather than four to zero,
that's a really big deficit to overcome. Yeah, and you know,
good teams close teams like this. Earlier in the year,
Kitchener came in here, they built a three nothing lead
and London came back all the way eventually would tie it.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
Kitchener would win it in overtime. So a three nothing
lead with these teams, it's not that safe. You've got
to keep pounding. And both teams have experienced that this year,
and tonight it was London with the early jump and
they you know, even after one period when it's four nothing,
you get London's got to have this mentality of we
(20:10):
want to make it five six. You know, you can't
in this at this time of year, against this quality
of teams. You got to keep pounding away. You can't
let off the.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Gas, especially when you know that they just came back
from a three to zero series deficit against a strong
windsor Spitfires team.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
You mentioned the fourth gold gym.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
Just before that, the Rangers had kind of a flurry
in the night's zone. The Knights weren't able to get
the puck out and Austin Elliott had to come up
with some big saves there about three or four with
London hemdon their ends. So it wasn't like he was
just not tested at all tonight. It was if Kitchener
gets that goal there, they had some pretty good zone
time there at the end of the first period where
(20:47):
they could have made a game out of this thing.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
Yeah, and that's where I that's where I thought I
saw London's inactivity show up, a little bit a pass
and a skate when it shouldn't have been, or a
babble of a puck, and you know, just that that
cleanliness that sometimes you'd lose when you sit for eight days.
I think it's been and you know, I think that's
where I saw the but London had built a good
(21:09):
lead by that time.
Speaker 5 (21:10):
But yeah, it was there for Kitchener.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
They had some good looks at that moment, and you know,
both of those great chances go in. I think they
were on the same shift or same sequence. But yeah,
I mean it's three to one and all of a sudden,
Kitcher's feeling better and relaxed and it could be a
different game. But Elliott was there to make a safe
so for nothing instead of three to one at the
(21:33):
end of one, that's huge difference.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
And a great play by Sam O'Reilly to skate around
the zone find Sam Dickinson, who does a great job
of just getting elusive and finding those empty areas where
defenders kind of loose him in the defensive coverage. The
great play by O'Reilly to circle the zones everybody's looking
at him. Dickinson finds himself open for that patented one timer,
his second goal of the first period, and again that
(21:58):
was to me the dagger Jim because nothing eleven seconds
left in the period and you're thinking, if you're the Rangers. Man,
if we could have just got out of there with
it being three, especially after they had such a great
end of the period, Dickinson opens it up to four nothing,
and that was basically, you know, at in my opinion,
where the game ended well.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
Knights of every playoff run has kind of a theme, right,
and they were able to an eerie score three goals
in the last minute of a crucial game to kind
of pull away in Game three, a critical Game three
against Owen Sound Barkie and Collen hooked up on a
goal with one point four seconds left, those critical end
(22:38):
of period goals and you could almost feel that one
coming and the Knights that's been their thing.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
Blake Montgomery later in the second period is able to
get the Knights their five to nothing lead. It was
just a great play cut down the left wing and
was able to kind of cut towards the net and
stay on the forehand get it up top over Jackson
Parsons in. That was a really nice goal from Blake Montgomery.
Speaker 4 (23:02):
Yeah, sure was in all of the things on display there,
the reach, the speed, he got some speed going through
the neutral zone, took the pass at about the red
line and then turned on the Jets, and it was
just a bit of a if you've got a not
so good angle on Blake Montgomery at that point, he's
blown by it because I don't know if he was touched.
I think he got in real clean. And at six',
(23:25):
four he's got the reach and he's got the speed
to get in all by. Himself and what a finish
blocker side. High and he's had some big goals Against
kitchener this. Year he got one On parsons in this,
building went around the, net came out, front shot at
high on the. Gloves so he's had a good series
(23:47):
against The rangers this year and all the games he's
one of the night's leading scorers Against kitchener and, boy
what a goal that. Was and he got an assist tonight.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
Too dickinson's fourth point of the, night so caps off
a great week for him so far to start this
This Western Conference. Finals and then we had two nice
goals From Luca. ROMANO i think the first One Austin
elliott might want. BACK a nice little touch pass From
Tanner lamb to find him going to the net there
and he beats Beats Austin elliott over the. GLOVE i
think that's One elliott will want. Back but the one
(24:16):
later in the third, period which ended up being the
last school of the. Game Sam dickinson kind of had
some trouble with the puck at the blue line because
of the pursuit Of Luca, romano and then he kind
of takes the, puck cuts in the, zone you, know
cuts towards the mid the middle of the, net and
shoots it far side a blocker On Austin. Elliott so
two nice goals to take away From Luca.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
Romano you can almost see him getting.
Speaker 4 (24:38):
Stronger this guy's gonna get a lot of points in this, league,
Right he's going to be the centerpiece of a of
a very good team in twenty seven when they when
they want to Be Memorial cup, READY i. Think But
romano is just growing and. Growing it'll be interesting to.
See you, know he's not the biggest, guy but you
can feel with those shots his release he's getting strength
(25:02):
in his wrists and arms and that shot he doesn't
need to wind. Up he's got this ability to shoot
From the second one was from fairly well out and
Beat Austin elliot pretty clean on the blocker. Side and
Then i'm not sure If pristevitch maybe caught a bit
of the puck on the first, goal but, regardless great,
(25:25):
shot quick, release and both those Guys lamb And romano
back up the d when they come through the neutral
zone with a little. Speed you can't do anything but
back up because they are they got the ability to
go by, you and they're impressive skill.
Speaker 5 (25:43):
Players for, sure.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
You have to respect that, speed right and as you,
Mentioned Luca romano's going to be a very impact. Player
he already is in this. League but you, know in
a night where it wasn't what The Kitchen rangers, Wanted
Luca romano was definitely a bright spot for, them scoring
two goals later in the.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
Game so it.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
Ends up being a five to two five, There, Jim
but again you alluded to it kind of at the.
Beginning there was some extracurricular Stuff Van bommel and and
one of The Kitchen rangers players ended up getting sent.
Off there were multiple penalties in this. Game it just
got really chippy later, on frustration coming out on both
sides and an awkward. Play Captain Denver Barkie Philadelphia flyers
(26:20):
prospect goes, down he tries to get back, up does
his best to hobble to the room but could put
no weight on that left. Leg and we have no
update yet as of his. Status but even in a,
win it's a little bit hesitation for The nights because
number eighty six is so valuable for.
Speaker 4 (26:35):
THEM i, mean, right that's that's critical the health Of Denver.
Barkie and, yeah it.
Speaker 5 (26:46):
The video on. IT i just saw a quick look at.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
It it was an awkward landing on on that left,
leg and, boy he knew it seemed like right away
that it wasn't, well wasn't feeling.
Speaker 5 (27:00):
Good we'll just have to.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
Wait and you, know you can't you, know you can't
speculate on injuries and what. Happens but, yeah what you.
Can't what you do know is how important this guy
is to The London knights and every way, leadership penalty,
killing power, Play he's kind of everything and that's why
he's he's captain and such experience now with championship level
(27:26):
experience and kind of vocal on the bench in between
periods if he needs. TO i, mean this guy is so,
important you, KNOW i don't know how The. KNIGHTS i,
mean you can't replace, Him SO i don't know what
what the what's going to, happen and we'll have to
wait and get the final word on his on a
(27:47):
status For, sunday don't.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
Know twenty points in eight games and as you, mentioned
takes so many key defensive zone draws even down five
on three, blocks a ton of. Shots he's really the
great example captain you want to see and again the
Field aldol if You flyers have a gem and, him
let's hope for the.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Best you.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
Know whenever that news does come out Before sunday's, game
we'll see if he's in the lineup or.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
Not but we're going to take a quick commercial.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
Break we're going to come back and we're going to
hear from both The Kitchener rangers head coach as well
as a, player and as well The London knights head
coach and a.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
Player so we'll here bost game.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
Thoughts from both sides and it's got definitely has some spice.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
To, it As jim alluded. To so stay right.

(31:12):
all of our great reels and short. Content Brandon putto
and guest co Host jim Van, horn color commentator for
The London nights on nine EIGHTY, cfpl nice enough to
join us, here continuing to react To game one of
what should be a fun and spicy series as you'll
hear in the postgame interviews with these two. Teams, jim
before we get to The Kitchener rangers, side, First i'm
(31:36):
trying to count the penalties during the commercial, break AND
i believe it's thirty eight or thirty nine penalties between
the misconducts and the minor penalties tonight between the two.
Teams would you expect anything else from A game one
Between kitchener And.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
London, oh every whistle brought a conversation at the very,
least and every whistle oftentimes those conversations would lead to
a glove in the, face are push and the referees
were doing their best to try and try and corral.
Things and That's london, kitchener and it's you cannot have
(32:11):
two competitive and organizations like this meeting the playoffs for
four straight, years especially guys who have been you, know
on most of the, teams, RIGHT i can imagine both.
Side both teams have players that are just so frustrated
with the other. Guys and every time you get a
(32:33):
whistle and you you get a push and, shove the
referees have to handle. It and that's GONNA i think
that's the start, though, right that's a conference, file it's the.
Playoffs nothing's. Easy you never want to give a, Quarter
you never want to give an, Inch you never and
you always want, to you, know make sure you're delivering
a message to the other guy to know what goes
(32:54):
on out. There and then it'll settle. Down it'll be
a couple of games of this and then they'll have
to play, hockey and eventually that's the way it's going
to be. Decided it's not the pushing and shoving after the.
Speaker 5 (33:06):
Whistle.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
YEAH i don't think they can go like that for
seven straight.
Speaker 4 (33:09):
GAME i don't think. So, well you saw that Kitchen
or winsor game in game? Seven was? THERE i guess coincidental.
MINERS i think we're the only calls in that only
call in that. Game, yeah no power plays for either
team in that game. Seven but let's get to The
Kitchen rangers. Side we'll hear from head.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
Coach you see a hocus as well as the double
goal scorer tonight for, them In Luca. Romonald let's hear
what they had to say following game one.
Speaker 8 (33:32):
Evening Of welcome To polskian coverage Of game one of
The Western Conference Championship Series Night's finals five two in
favorable on a nice joined out by A Kitchener rangers head,
coach you see a hocus.
Speaker 9 (33:42):
Along with Forward Luca. Romano, coach maybe you can just
provide your thoughts on that.
Speaker 10 (33:47):
Game, well first of, all.
Speaker 11 (33:51):
We didn't play. Well we weren't ready for the what
do you need in this? Series the first period was
we played really? BAD i would say.
Speaker 10 (34:01):
We kind of got caught in.
Speaker 11 (34:02):
The headhead what. Occurred we're gonna submit that for. Sure
it's a straight hit to the, head but we'll do.
That we have a, problem we'll send that to the,
league but we'll see what. Happens but then we kind
of got caught on that and two goals, came two first,
chances two, goals and then we kind of stopped playing
(34:23):
for a. While if we didn't Play Kitchen rangers hockey
in the first and after that second and third we
started playing, more but still wasn't enough for, Sure but it's.
Playoffs that's the first, game, no we, know and now
the series, started and, yeah we got gotta be.
Speaker 10 (34:42):
Better look at two goals for yourself tonight in your.
Mind what needs to change moving Into.
Speaker 12 (34:48):
SUNDAY i think, defensively we got to be harder on.
Guys cleaning. Myself we're watching a little bit too much
in the beginning of the, game watching them make. Plays
that's when they're. Good so we eliminate space and play
hard and finished. CHECKS i think it'll built around for.
Speaker 10 (35:01):
Us we will take questions, here guys and just freeze your.
Head if you have One Josh brown thing in the,
record what.
Speaker 13 (35:08):
Did you think when they have hope say we should.
Speaker 9 (35:10):
Have been pality and what was a?
Speaker 11 (35:12):
Reaction, well but for, me WHAT i saw it's the straight,
contact first to the, first straight to the, head pops
his helmet, off and then our guy got, it gets it.
Injured so that's for, ME i think those kind of
things we have to get out of the. Game it's
not hockey head hits and that's it wasn't a clean
(35:35):
hit at. ALL i like physical, PLAY i like, IT
i love, it but that's not the what we we.
Need we need too many concussions in this. Sport so
those we have to get out of the. Game, no,
no nothing, else nothing not right now does.
Speaker 7 (35:52):
That have on the team in the top game once that, Happens.
Speaker 11 (35:57):
Well we were a little bit looking looking, around but
we know, playoffs injuries happen and you just have to
go on and you have to.
Speaker 10 (36:06):
Move but we we.
Speaker 11 (36:07):
Didn't we weren't on the best how we should have
been in the first period when that. Happened they got
those two goals to to, fast two first, chances two,
GOALS d zone face, off, loss lose your. Man they
got the, goal and THEN i would, say not not
GOOD d zone play from, Us but we will be Better,
(36:33):
no it's a. Loss it's a loss two periods to
one for. Us but it doesn't, really it doesn't. Matter
it doesn't. Matter you need to win in. Playoffs we'll.
See no nothing there great.
Speaker 13 (36:48):
To go ahead.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
Coach when you lose it for forward like, that especially
top line, centers you, know forty seconds into the, game
how do you kind of go about it as a
coach to kind of switch up the lines down and
forward for basically the entire game and haven't got double
shift things like.
Speaker 11 (37:00):
That, well it. Happens it, happens so you have to do.
That and it took. TIME i thought we were after
after the after the first we kind of got better
line combinations what started. Working but it's it's part of,
hockey and you have to be ready ready for.
Speaker 10 (37:21):
That anything can. Happen you, see.
Speaker 13 (37:25):
There's a bunch of guys upstairs that are looking at
that head and they.
Speaker 9 (37:28):
Said no head. Contact you said head, Contact so are you?
Speaker 11 (37:32):
Spying, WELL i have a screenshot screenshot of of, it watched.
It we have a pretty good view WHAT i. Saw
that's but that's my. Opinion and we're gonna send it
into the. League and of Course i'm not saying. Reps
reps do what they. DO i have nothing to say about,
that but that's just my opinion WHAT i saw and
uh AND i have a screenshot from, it so nothing nothing.
(37:54):
ELSE i watched it quite many many.
Speaker 9 (37:57):
Times did that make the.
Speaker 13 (37:58):
Kids angry that there was? No there was?
Speaker 10 (38:01):
No well it is what it.
Speaker 9 (38:04):
Is do you think do you think of With barty going?
Off that was even that got even? Out but, no
that was.
Speaker 10 (38:12):
Gleanhead thank, You Josh.
Speaker 13 (38:15):
Luca as a, player when you see when your your
teammates go, Down i'm, like what does that do the
betch did you guys do to try to stay focused
and not you, know seek retribution or just.
Speaker 12 (38:27):
Focusing, YEAH i think we gotta do a better job of.
That after he went, out we kind of forgot the
game plan and they got, onnest so kind of not
not focusing on it too. Much, obviously it sucks and
he's a big part of our, team but just getting
back to work and getting back to the.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
Game there were the thoughts, Things there were the thoughts
from head. Coach you see a hocus And Luca romano
from the kitchen Or rangers. Side, Obviously, jim they have
a different perspective of the hit On christian Humph Reason
when asked by By Josh brown and and And Ryan
payette there in the post, game what were your thoughts
from reacting.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
To to what he had to?
Speaker 5 (39:01):
Say, well the, league you, know it's interesting.
Speaker 13 (39:06):
The.
Speaker 4 (39:06):
SCREEN i don't know about. This you, know if a
screenshot is going to change the league's opinion on, this
but it's it is an interesting. SITUATION i go back
to The Andrew gibson hit On lartis in The Joshawa branford.
Series gibson was not given a penalty on the play
(39:31):
and the league reviewed, it and you, know the injury
issue has seems to be a, thing, SO i, Mean
lartis is huge part of That branford. Attack they reviewed,
That gibson got a two game, suspension SO i don't.
Know obviously they're gonna try and do in the. League
(39:51):
obviously they've dealt with this before and always have videos
being sent in and pictures and. Whatever the league did
review it in sense on the ice with the. Tablet
that's why they brought this tablet thing, in. Right both
referees watched it probably and took their. TIME i don't,
Know so there give it another try and try and
(40:14):
send it to the league at least voice their. Opinion
and he didn't sound all that hopeful the league, did you.
Know but that's that's again the gamesmanship of. Playoffs it
sounds like both teams might be sending one in the
one On, barkie the one On. Humphreys so the league
again and they always take into account if the players.
Injured not you Mentioned Nick lardis being done for that whole.
(40:35):
SERIES i think they sent the message To Andrew gibson
in that sense that you, know even though it necessarily
wasn't one hundred percent a dirty, play you take out
the best player in the, series you might have to
to pay the, price at least for a couple of. Games,
well it's a it's, precedent isn't. It and when you
go when you go, there it's a difficult position to.
(40:56):
Maintain so we'll, see we'll see what. Happens because it
sounds like sounds like the league officer is getting two
videos from tonight's game and that's Again kitchener In london
and it's a bitter.
Speaker 1 (41:11):
Rivalry so that was the first post game that we
heard from and we heard The London nights side And
Dale hunter will react to WHAT u see A hocus
said in that about the hits and things going. On
so let's get to head Coach Dale hunter as well
As knights Defenseman Sam dickinson Following game one.
Speaker 8 (41:29):
Tonight welcome back to postgame coverage Of game one of
The Western Conference Championship series one night spot to two winners.
Tonight do you have a nice Face Coach Dale hunter
along with Defenseman Sam. Dickinson, coach you can't ask for
a much better start than.
Speaker 10 (41:43):
That maybe just to provide your thoughts on the nice.
Speaker 9 (41:45):
Way, yeah we came out pretty good and got an
early lead and we kept them him in there pretty.
Speaker 8 (41:52):
Good sam had a good. Week you, KNOW i got
a big warehouse this. Week of, course First star honors,
today two goals to. Assist did you share your thoughts
on on the game.
Speaker 5 (42:01):
And what brought you?
Speaker 14 (42:01):
Guys, YEAH i, think Like dale, said, obviously you, know
we came out strong as uh a focal point of
something we talked about before the. Game, so, uh you
know we're happy with, that and, uh you, know it's
just trying to carry through the entire.
Speaker 13 (42:12):
Game right, Ahead, dale you see a hocus said That
Casper halton's hit On humphrey's was a head, shot says
he has a screenshot of.
Speaker 9 (42:21):
It what was your view of? It wasn't a head? Shot?
Speaker 15 (42:24):
Uh when the kid fell he hit The if you
watch the replay of, it he hits the boards with his.
Speaker 9 (42:30):
Head and it popped. Off so, yeah it's definitely he's definitely.
Wrong Is Denver barkie's injury. Bad we don't know. Yet
we don't.
Speaker 10 (42:40):
Know what'd you think of the hit on that?
Speaker 9 (42:42):
One it was, Late it was a late. Hit they're
trying to at the end of the.
Speaker 15 (42:48):
Game they're running around and trying to take a piece
of their best players trying to get him.
Speaker 9 (42:53):
Out, uh he said that was a good.
Speaker 8 (42:56):
Hit do you was he wrong on?
Speaker 9 (42:58):
That?
Speaker 13 (43:01):
Great?
Speaker 1 (43:02):
Sam how big was it for you to get get
that fourth goal because it was three, nothing but Then
kitchener had a little bit of a fight back there
and then for you going to get one with ten
seconds left in the period to make it.
Speaker 3 (43:11):
For just how big of a momentum boose was that
for the?
Speaker 4 (43:13):
Team?
Speaker 14 (43:14):
YEAH i think goals you, know early in the, period
late in the, period you, know kind of demoralizes a
team going into the next, Period so you know we
were we were coming pretty hard there and you, know
a great pass by by O'Reilly and you, know just
kind of put in their new.
Speaker 3 (43:27):
Spot what do you think the energy tonight in the?
Speaker 1 (43:29):
Building obviously a story robbery between kitchener and In london
and the, playoffs you, know, elevate elevated to the biggest.
Speaker 3 (43:34):
Stage what do you think of it out? THERE a
lot of, hits a lot of a lot of stuff
going on after the? Whistles was it everything you?
Speaker 9 (43:40):
Expected? YEAH i was high.
Speaker 14 (43:41):
PACED i think you, know we all came into this
knowing that it was it was gonna be a tough,
series you, know fast, paced. Physical you, know obviously it's
nice to get these first two games at home and
you know we'll go from.
Speaker 4 (43:51):
There Right, Hey Sam dale mentioned that they were running.
Speaker 5 (43:56):
Around how do you when you're on the ice, There
how do you guys handle?
Speaker 13 (43:59):
That how did you think he handled?
Speaker 10 (44:01):
IT i think it's just being smart.
Speaker 14 (44:03):
Obviously you know there's sometimes where you, know you get
tangled up in a in a tough, spot but for
the most players just be in diligent with the. Puck you,
know when we're when we're up like we are at
the end there and know that they're going to start
running around and you, know doing some dumb.
Speaker 10 (44:14):
Things it's just you, know get the puck out of
your hands.
Speaker 14 (44:16):
Early don't let, them you, know get too close to you,
know you know at that point you'll take an, icing
you'll take a whistle at that. Point just you, know
you're just trying to kind of get out of the.
Game at that, point you find space and stay away
from the.
Speaker 13 (44:27):
Heads dalli, said you know you thought that they were
running around and that do you think it was a
give and?
Speaker 9 (44:33):
Take did you guys play a part of? That, well
when you play hockey and you're, up who's? Frustrated who?
Speaker 4 (44:42):
Is?
Speaker 9 (44:44):
NO i just asked you. BACK i, know But i'm
saying who's? Frustrated? Always always the losing teams always. Frustrated
it's always been that. Way well for, coach what did
you think of The obama coming?
Speaker 1 (44:58):
In obviously with O Van, gorp you, know gets into the,
fight gets, it gets your team going a little.
Speaker 9 (45:02):
Bit how do you think he performed on that fourth line?
Speaker 15 (45:04):
Tonight bumber was. Good he works hard and he gives
it on his. Effort he worked hard and it's you,
know he's always wanted to. Play he's a real team
guy and you'll do anything for the, team.
Speaker 4 (45:13):
Right and then when you got the one guy cross
checking everybody and you Got.
Speaker 9 (45:16):
Bolt but what's the impact Of?
Speaker 14 (45:17):
Bolton, YEAH i think you, know they're they're guys who you,
know they know they're their role on this team this,
year and you know they're they're there to protect a
lot of, us you, know and we're really you, know
grateful that we have guys like that to be able
to go out and kind of you, know take control
of the. Situation you, know you See bolton do, it you,
know for two years, now and Obviously bomber's coming and
done a good job this.
Speaker 10 (45:38):
Year so it's it's good to have those guys on your.
Team you need them. Obviously you. Know they're great team
guys and they play their role to a team.
Speaker 11 (45:45):
Coach another great performance For sam.
Speaker 10 (45:47):
Today you got a individual piece of hardware earlier this.
Speaker 13 (45:50):
Week i'm just curious where you think he's improved the
most of his.
Speaker 9 (45:53):
Game this, year, well both the offensively and.
Speaker 15 (45:57):
DEFENSIVELY i think it's a big part of the team
and he creates a lot and he defends a lot,
like he blocks a lot of shots and he's been
doing it since he was sixty and he's.
Speaker 9 (46:07):
Been a big part of this team and credit to.
Him he just keeps getting.
Speaker 1 (46:11):
Better there was head Coach Dale hunter of The London
knights and Defenseman Sam. Dickinson, Well, jim you heard it.
There he thought the hit On bark he was. Late
he thought the hit On humphreys was. Okay and we
heard the exact opposite from the kitchener, side which is
what you would expect.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
What from coaches who are, smart, right it's, noise and
the other thing is nobody has to. Worry it takes
the attention away from the. Individual the players get a
little bit of a, freedom they get a little distance
from the controversy because the coach is kind of standing
up taking it.
Speaker 5 (46:50):
On that's the.
Speaker 4 (46:53):
WAY i, mean we're not hearing anything new as far
as strategy or anything like, that but absolutely the coach is.
Trying the noise that's created during a lot of these
playoffs series about this call or that the players have
to fight through that and it's not about last. Game
(47:17):
we dropped the puck at four o'clock On, sunday and
both these teams better be ready because there's a lot
at stake and they need the. Freedom and now people
maybe talking about this hit or that they're not talking
about maybe what else is going. On and you, KNOW
i think it's tried and. TRUE i mean it is
also trying to maybe get a call next. Game maybe
(47:38):
you get a little bit on your side the next.
Game and, YEAH i Mean dale makes a. POINT i
mean the team that's ahead is OFTEN i mean she
says a team that's behind is the one that's. Frustrated
good good. Comeback as far as, assessing, well you know
what the penalties, were and, YEAH i mean it's playoff
(48:01):
hockey and playoff atmosphere between the teams and the.
Speaker 3 (48:06):
Coaches gamesmanship is at its, peak, Right, Yeah and it's.
Speaker 4 (48:11):
Been done, forever, Right its been done, forever and that's just.
Speaker 5 (48:16):
The way it.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
Is i've never Heard Dale hunter ask somebody else a, question,
Though so shout out To Josh brown for being able
to Have Dale hunter ask a follow up question to.
Speaker 3 (48:24):
Somebody that was definitely a.
Speaker 1 (48:26):
First in a SoundBite for The, ages but you mentioned
that's it almost is reminiscent of that saganaw series With
london last year With Chris, lazari you know the comments
he had About london and trying to maybe persuade some calls.
There but, again it's just when the stakes are at their,
highest this is the frustration that comes, out and the
head coaches try to be as calm as possible so
(48:46):
it doesn't rub off negatively on their. Teams but when
you get to this point and you have two plays
like that can really affect your, lineup it makes it.
Speaker 4 (48:54):
Difficult referee THAT i know, Of i've covered this league
for a long, time AND i remember the referees deciding
