Speaker 1 (01:00):
Welcome into another episode of OHL Overtime right here on
the Armchair GM Sports Network and our game recap of
Game four of the OHL Western Conference Final between the
London Nights and the Kitchener Rangers. London sweeping Kitchener in
the four games and improved to twelve and oh so
far through the first three rounds of the twenty twenty
five OHL Playoffs here at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium in
(01:22):
front of seven nine hundred four and ninety six excuse
me at the odd tonight. Thank you everybody that's tuned

the calling ward for his Ohio State buck Guys. Colin,
Thanks so much for jumping on with us tonight. We
got an early morning start for work tomorrow, so really
appreciate your time as always.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Oh yeah, no problem, but always a pleasure. It definitely
was a fun series. It was a short series, but
a lot happened in the brans. There's a lot to.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Unfold, absolutely and again we've had you on, I believe
early in the series talking about what Kitchener is going
to need to do to beat this London Night's team
and again undefeated in the playoffs, still going into the
OHL Finals. This is their third time, third straight time
winning the Wayne Gretzky Trophy, the first time first team
to do that since it became a trophy back in
(02:34):
nineteen ninety nine, as Josh Wheatland said in the post
game as well, the first team since the ninety three
Sue Greyhounds to go back to back to back, making
the OHL Championship, winning the Western Conference. Colin, you grew
up watching this London Night's team over the years, with
so many great, great teams, listening to Mike Stubbs on
the radio with Jim van Horn the great guys on
nine eighty CFPL. You know better than anybody you know
(02:55):
some of these great London Nights teams over the years,
but even last year's team. But this seems like a
team on a mission this year to raise that Memorial
Cup that they didn't get last year.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Since it ended last year and second on Michigan, it
felt like this team was destined to be go to
the mem Cup final and finish the job. It felt
like in it. I mean, let's be honest, Brandon, this
core has finished every single job. They've accomplished everything except
for the Memorial Cup. And they've come one game, one
moment away from accomplishing everything that there is too accomplish
(03:30):
in this league that junior hockey has to offer at
the CHL level, and this team feels like it's just
hungry and it's destined to go to that. You see
the win, you see the win tonight, and you see
them on the odd ice, and you know, and obviously,
when you win the conference championship three years in a row,
(03:52):
it is what it is, but you don't want to
you can tell there's more at sake. And I just
think that this team, the core of these the players
they have in place, They've won everything and they Pete
had damn kid Kitchen her team in just four games, Brandon,
and like I said, I think I've picked five games
in the bracket. But this team just continues to show
(04:17):
how how good they are. And honestly, watching the game
tonight without Denver Barki, without without Woolley, with the one
game suspension, and you're watching the game and I'm thinking,
this may be the first time, I like since twenty sixteen,
the Martyr de Vorak to Chuck line was so dominant
(04:39):
that I feel the way that the Lonnon Knights, they
can dominate any given game they choose to do so,
and it feels like for the first time since twenty sixteen,
and they've had a bunch of teams and that, but
it really feels like that to Chuck the Vorak Marnyer
team where they it's just meant to be and whoever
gets out of the Easton Barrier Oshawa, it is no
(05:02):
easy feat for the London Nights. But that was a
real eye opener for everyone across CHL hockey because everyone
in the NHL knows the team to beat, but now
in the CHL, there is no doubt in my mind
the team to beat in the CHL is the London
Nights and they've showcased that so far in the postseason.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Yeah, we'll see who comes out of the WHL and
the QMJHL. No disrespect to them, but it just seems
like a team of destiny. This London Knights team, even
without their captain Denver Barkie in the lineup, it's it's
gonna be a real tough team to beat, as you
mentioned there, and they just control the pace of play
up until the last couple of minutes they were the
third when Kitchener was really trying to make things happen there.
They scored one, but they still needed two more and
(05:45):
London just the way that they play, the way that
they're able to wear you down defensively and you know,
when they get a lead going to that third period,
good luck. You might as well start the bus because
Dale Hunters team just so well coached to play defensive
hockey in that sense, Colin, We're gonna hear from the
Kitchener Rangers side with U see a Hocus as well
as graduating goaltender Jackson Parsons as well. We'll hear from
(06:06):
the London Night's side with head coach Dale Hunter and
Defenseman of the Year Sam Dickinson a little bit later
on today, but we'll get forward with the game. Stats
calling thirty six twenty seven in favor of the Knights
and the shots on net. They led for most of
the game until Kitchener had that late flurry. As I mentioned,
you know what, the goalie pulled needed three to tie,
they only got one. But London controlled the pace of play,
(06:29):
controlled the shots on net in this game.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Yeah, without a doubt, it felt like Kitchener had the
dream start. They wanted to get Brandon and then London
Knights found a way to respond, right and they just
pour it on. It comes in waves and it feels
like it's a way that it comes, and it comes
and it comes and all of a sudden it's three
(06:52):
four to one, like we see tonight, right, and the
Knights just put their foot on the gas. And I
thought that that was the most impressive part about the game.
I thought Jackson Parsons played great in goal for the
Kitchener Rangers, like he has all season. It's just tough
and like you mentioned, Brandon, it feels like the Knights
(07:12):
control the possession. And I got this glimpse and we
got the glimpse of this in game two, in Game
two where the London Knights were all over, all over
the kitchen Rangers and all of a sudden it kind
of put their foot out the gas. Where Ever, since
game two when that little where that happened when they
hit adversity, they really controlled the pace of the game.
(07:35):
And it feels like they can click, they have that
button to where Okay, we'll play when we have to play,
but if we stick to our systems, they stick to
our defensive game plan in structure, we're gonna be fine.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
London two for six on the power play, Kitchener one
for three. But the ones that Kitchener did give up
calling were untimely.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
You know self inflicted wounds.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
I go back to We'll get into it in the
scoring summary, but the five on three goal was completely
unnecessary for Luke Ellenis to jump Casper Halton in that
In that scenario, I know the emotions are high. I
know when Halton in real time looks like he leaves
his feet. But again, when you're already down a man
and you're Luke Ellenis, who's one of the top players
on the Rangers, and you're trying to hold a one
(08:18):
to one game, you can't just jump a guy and
give the Knights of five on three, which Dickinson scored on.
And then later in the game it was Halton and
getting slashed behind the play that led to a power
play and then he ends up getting the power play goal.
So again the Rangers just you know, have to keep
their emotions in check because those two goals were big
and really ones that they could have avoided.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
One hundred percent. And that's what elimination games are, right,
elimination game There's a lot of emotion, and you know
your backshu up against a wall. And I think ellen
As in that play as a player, you're thinking it's
a questionable play. It's a do or die game. I
want to do whatever it takes her of my team,
you know, I want to send a message And that's
probably what Ellenis is thinking in that in that situation.
(09:02):
But yeah, I agree with you. I didn't think it
was maybe in real time, but on the screen it
didn't look like it was terrible a terrible hit. It
doesn't look like it'd be a review or any thought
of being a penalty in my opinion on it. But
I can see where Ellennis is coming from to give
them the benefit of the doubt on that play. But
it's tough, right A five on three for the London
(09:23):
Night's one of the best power plays in the CCHL.
And when you're rolling what they're rolling out there, Dickinson,
Halton and Cowboy and Cowan, they got so many guys there,
then you you gotta when you you can't give them bounces,
if you give them opportunity to have a moment in
(09:43):
a game, that those little sways of momentum, and when
you give a free shot of momentum that can bite
you in the long run in a game, in a contest,
in a game against a team, for the Rangers sake,
that you have to play an almost perfect textbook game
against Lon of nights to be successful in the win column,
(10:03):
and that's one of those plays that doesn't add up
at the end of the night.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
And I know Halton has been a magnet in the
series ever since forty seconds in when he gets gets
Christian Humphries up high, who doesn't come back the entire series.
So a couple of plays boath Halton and was able
to get the Rangers off their game on those two
plays because obviously he's the guy that they're going after.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
One and he's a tough and make no mistake, Casper
Halton is a big, tough forward. He's a big guy.
When you look at Casper Halton coming off the bus,
it's like what basketball team is he on? Big guy,
big body, big broad shoulders. When you look at him,
it's like, I know he's a sniper, but man, if
(10:45):
he maybe clean up the skating a little bit, he's
got big, powerful strides. If he could play in the
interior area around the net, he's gonna be a really
good professional hockey player with the in the San Jose
Sharks system next season and possibly the Sharks with his
goal scoring abilities in his size, but man like the
power forward in the ability to get under your skin
(11:08):
has really stood out this year in the postseason from
Casper Halton and especially in this series alone.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Yeah, he has and a guy that could have been
playing in pro hockey this year when he was sent
back from the San Jose Barrakudo. Just adding another piece
to this London Knights team. And we should mention Jacob
Julian's done a really nice job in the absence of
Denver Barkie on that top power play. He's really elevated
his game the last three nights, or the last three
games rather. I believe he's got seven points in the
(11:34):
three games since Barkie's been gone, So really strong effort
from Jacob Julian. The Winnipeg Jets prospect. I know we
can't spend too much time on it, but he's been
really good stepping up in that role with Barkie out well.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Absolutely he has. Jacob Julian's an underrated player. He's kind
of that Swiss Army knife. He's such a valuable part
of this London Night corps where he's the guy that
can be your second line center or if you need
him to step up and be your first line. He
can do it. You can play any role. He can
be your third line center. You gonna be your second
or your first line. That's huge to have a first
line center as your third line center in certain situations
(12:08):
if you're Dalehunter and staff.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
Well said, and couldn't have said it any better.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
As far as the face offs, thirty seven to thirty
five in favor of the Knights, their best men on
the Dot tonight, Samuel Riley nineteen to thirty two was
their best, and then Jacob Julian eleven of twenty, Will
Nickel ten of four of ten, excuse me, and then
on the ranger side, Luca Romano thirteen of twenty seven,
Cam Mercer twelve of seventeen, and Luke Ellenis seven of twenty.
(12:34):
Anything catch your eye on the faceoff Dot tonight, Colin,
I know London really does a nice job of winning
those initial face offs on the penalty kill, and that's
why they're so successful in that sense.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Well said Brandon. I'm glad you mentioned the penalty kill
because the penalty kill situation, right, and we talked about
this earlier a few episodes back, Brandon, with the face
offs on the penalty kill, if you can win a
face off in your own end well the other team's
power play, it's a guaranteed you're gonna ki ten seconds
you get a clear, it's a guarantee. It's kill. It
down to a minute thirty left. So instead of a
two minute power play, you kill, it's a minute thirty
(13:07):
power play. Nowadays with a drop off that ugly pass,
the ugly drop off pass, it stalls even more so
you're working on a minute and a half kill. I'm
no analytics major, but in reality of hockey, in winning games,
I love that ability to win face offs. I think
that's the most underrated ability on the penalty kill. I
(13:28):
think that's how a penalty kill. I think your percentages.
I would love to see the analytics on this, the
penalty kill when you win the face off to start
the penalty compared to when you lose it, because it's
an extra three chances at times that you eliminate this
by winning the face offs. And I'm glad you mentioned that, Brandon.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
While you're talking here, Colin, I wish you could see it.
Jackson Parsons and Trent Swicker now on the ice in
their street clothes with some family and friends taking their
last pictures on the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Ice. So really cool,
cool moment going on right now a post game. But
we'll get forward with the scoring summary. You mentioned Kitchener
gets on the board first two minutes and sixteen seconds
in a dream start on the power play for them
(14:11):
to be able to get the first goal in this game.
They haven't scored more than two goals in any of
the games in the series. Ryan Piette from the London
Free Press pointing that out to me, But you know,
Kitchener gets on the board early, and again that's what
they needed to you know, at least have a chance
in this game against London.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
No, absolutely they did. They had to score and like
I mentioned this year earlier on this afternoon, Brandon, we
were chatting about the game. If you're Kitchener, to be
successful in any game in the series, any given game
in the series, you had to give up three or
less goals to win, and even that might not be
good enough, as we saw in the series. And if
you're the Rangers, you got to find a way to
score three goals then and it's so hard to do,
(14:49):
but you had That's how you have to do it
when you're playing a team that dominates the puck like
London does. When you get your opportunities, you got to
cash in an autumn and it's a hard and honest
you might only get three great a opportunities. And you
flash back to Game three when you see the breakaway
and the pucks on the line right and you don't
get the goal, and next thing you know, the Knights
(15:09):
come back down and score. Those are the bounces you
need to get to be successful against the London Nights.
And when, unfortunately for the Rangers, when you don't get
those bounces and you have a good start and you
have a goal late but just too little, too late
type situation for the Rangers. But if you get those bounces,
when you get those three to four bounce, is a
(15:30):
game that you're gonna get against a lot of Nights.
You got to cash in on and if those bounces
don't come your way, sometimes this is not meant to.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Be really nice ticktac toll play there from Luca Romano,
Jack Purdam and then finished off by Luke Ellenis beside
the net there. So again the Rangers big guns needed
to step up in the series, especially with Christian humphreyes
out of the lineup. They get the goal there to
go take the lead, but then less than a minute later,
actually fifty eight seconds later, Noah Reed's able to kind
(15:56):
of just shovel a puck in on a Will Nickels shot.
It was just kind of sitting there in the crease
and Jackson Parsons wasn't able to find it, and no
Will read the Saint Catherine's native former junior B player,
another one that London's found and developed really nicely. Here
gets the game tied at one, and another quick response
for London anytime Kitchener would kind of try to have
a piece in the series.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
Oh one percent, Brandon, those the teams that can respond
when they start to get hit ad versity are the
teams that are successful at this time of the season,
and the London Knights have respawned every single time so
far in the postseason. Even go back to last round
Brandon against against Eerie, where you see the up, where
(16:39):
you see them down. You see overtime in the elimination
game in Game four where they score a goal it's
just allowed and it felt like business as usual. Next
next couple of shifts go by they end up getting
the game winning eventual goal. That's kind of that's kind
of what you get right with the London Knights, and
you know what you're gonna get with them. It's a
business and I love their approach right now. But I
(17:01):
think they're in such a good spot HL wide. And
not to get too far off topic, but I was thinking.
I was watching a little bit of the Q games.
Moncton's a wagon out there in the queue, and I thinking,
if you could get medicine hat with Gavin McKenna and
this London Night team, this Memorial the Memorial Cup. Obviously,
(17:24):
not to get too far ahead, we're in the best
final of any league in the Intro Hockey that's about
to come up next week. But you think about those,
you think about that, how lucky we would be as
consumers of the Interio Hockey League CHL wide to see
the best on the best at the biggest level of
our league is incredible for the game. So I was
(17:45):
just thinking about that randomly, Like you see London the
way they're taking some of these teams like Monkedon looks
really good. If you get medicine hat there with McKenna, man,
this could be a fun Uh, this could be a
fun early summer.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Yeah, get your popcorn ready.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
It's gonna be exciting to finish here, going through the
championship series and then the Memorial Cup for all three
of these different leagues here, getting back to this game,
they'll call and so Noah Reed gets them on the
board tie in the game, and then it was Sam Dickinson,
as I mentioned, that was where London had gotten a
power play.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
They actually were a little.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Bit lats of daisical in their own end with Dickinson
and Cowen getting mixed up there and it leads to
getting Elliott had to come up with a big save
on a breakaway after they kind of were trying to
move the puck around as they exit the zone and
the power play, but luckily he made the save on
that one. And then right after the Halton and hit
that results in Ellen has taken a roughing penalty just
(18:38):
going after him immediately, and then it's you know that
played to Sam Dickinson on the one timer from easton
Cowen and Jacob Julian and all of a sudden it's
two to one London and here we go again.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
No, absolutely, that's tough right when you're kits changing, you
think you get him killed. They come down the break, Dickinson,
Alton and goal. I mean this, the wasn't on their
sticks very long on those releases, eh, Like Dickinson. The
Dickinson shot from the flank was a bomb and then
halted then with a little snapper like that, those releases
(19:11):
like there's not much Parsons can do about that one.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
The Halton in goal was in the second period. That
was midway through, so it was two to one London
after the first and then the second period. I mentioned
that the Halton in play, so he was, you know,
a magnet in more ways than one in the series,
one of London's most valuable players. And then again it
was that slash by Mercer behind the play that sent
(19:36):
London to the power play and then Halton and was
able to pick up the rebound to make it three
to one on the bunk shot in his little bumper
spot there in the power play. And you know, we
talked about it that nauseum about London's power play set
up and how lethal they are. But both these power
play goals for the Knights, the tire and then the
eventual game winner by Halton, and it's it's just really
(19:58):
tough because the Rangers did play a pretty good game,
but then shot themselves in the foot twice and it
cost them both times.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
Absolutely, I thought they played a solid game. I thought
they did everything that they had to do to be successful.
It just didn't happen on the score sheet. I agree
with that. You get good goaltending right, and you get
a couple of chances, you get the first goal of
the game. You like your you like your chances. I
thought Hokus said all the right things throughout the series.
I thought they didn't make good adjustments. There's not much
(20:26):
to complain about. I thought it was pretty cool to
Brandon and warm up, to see Mittle Jebbeck take warm
ups like that. That was pretty Uh, that was pretty
cool to see that from the Rangers standpoint. Now being
their last game this season tonight.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Yeah, if only he would have been able to to
make a difference in this series. Again, as you mentioned,
taking warm ups, but obviously still not one hundred percent.
But you do anything come playoff time if you can,
if you can get out there even for warm up
to try to do it, you will, especially you know
when it ends your season. So yeah, shout out to
Adrian missile Jebeck, who wasn't not in this series. We
(21:01):
get on later in the second period, right before the
end of the second Jackson Parsons makes a big two
on Oho save. It was kind of a just a
broken play, but he was able to make the save
there on Nickel with Van Bommel and cam Allen as
well trailing, so it's almost like a three on oh.
So Parsons keeps the minute. But then with with eight
(21:21):
oh two to left in the third period, a three
to one game at that point, j Sam Dickinson, like
he did for most of this series, jumped in on
the offense, came down the left wing and was able
to find Jesse Nurmi out front and the slot who
was able to shovel that one past Parsons to make
it for to one.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
And that one felt like the dagger. With just twelve
minutes left.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
Oh absolutely, And you know that's a tough one, right
you're going down, You're down three, not a lot of
time left, as you mentioned, that's it. That's tough. You know,
it's a boys. We gotta get to work here now
on the bench on the Rangers side, gotta get one quick.
You never know, you want to keep believing, you want
to create, believe, get one quick. It's just tough, right.
That was a top one for sure.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
And then late in the third period was when Kitchener
had you know, their best flurry, their best offensive zone
time of the whole game. Up by three goals, both
teams had called their timeouts at this point. Jack Pridham
was able to get the goal from Cameron Reid and
Luke Ellenis with the assists on that. You know, throws
one out front, it hits a London player, redirects, they
get a bounce and you're thinking, okay, I mean, there's
(22:23):
two twenty eight left. We've seen crazier things in junior hockey,
even though this is the London Knights. But they gave
this great crowd at the odd one more chance to chance.
Let's go Rangers and do the whole goal song celebration.
Just an amazing atmosphere calling for a London Yeah Kitchener,
you know, Western Conference Final elevated at the highest stage.
Such a great atmosphere between these two teams.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Oh absolutely, and it always is. I remember growing up
as a kid, every single time growing up a Knights
fan my family having seen tickets to the Knights and
growing up seeing the first thing you look at when
the schedule comes out, Brandon, is when did the London
Knights play the Kitchener Rangers right play a road game?
I think fortunate enough to get to go to experience
y Odd because yadd is one of the best venues
(23:04):
in the chl and I will and I'll stand by
that for as long as I'm around. Brandon. Anyone that
is able to or hasn't been able to, I guess
to get to the Odd to watch a junior hockey
game next season. Put that on your bucket list. It's
a must do Kitchener Auditorium. It doesn't matter if you
(23:24):
go to a game on a Tuesday night in October
or Wednesday night on April thirtieth, in an elimination game,
it's always the same. It's always an incredible atmosphere. The
fans are dialed in, the staff there in the arena
is great. The organization and Kitchener is a first class organization.
So it's London, but Kitchener's a first class organization. They
(23:47):
treat you well. Great people over there, really get people
over there. I know It's always cool, I know, even
when the Bulldogs being with the Bulldogs, It's always cool
to go to It's always cool to go to ktchen
near and always great to talk to guys like Mike
Farewell and even Josh Brown. Love having conversations with those
guys as well, whenever you're in Kitchener.
Speaker 1 (24:09):
Oh yeah, Josh Brown's right, and the rest of his
story right now. For the record, you know, great pro
and it's been been great to be around guys like
him and Mike Farwell, Ryan Pyette, you know, the list
goes on. It's been you know, some great people to
learn from in this series.
Speaker 4 (24:22):
For sure.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
We finish off there calling London tries to go for
the empty net or they're not able to get it.
Sam Dickinson tried to go bar down I think and
miss the net completely, but they hold on for the
four to two win and Austin Elliott again continues an
incredible undefeated shriek bet going dating back to the regular
season twenty four games now and still only lost one
game in the entire Season's pretty incredible to think of
(24:46):
for a guy that was placed on waivers by the
WHL you know out there and not able to really
find a home there. It gets put on waivers, gets
claimed by Barry, then Barry trades his rights to London,
and just an incredible season, only one loss and twelve
to zero in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
London's just firing in all cylinders right now.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
Oh absolutely, Elliott looks really good. He's so poised, not
a lot of extra movement, He's always squared to the shooter.
He's never off, he's never off his angles, which really
stands out to me when watching Austin Elliott.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
And so four to two is the final here tonight
in Game four, London wins the Wayne Gretzky Trophy for
the third consecutive season, and they will await to see
if they're facing the Oshawa Generals, who are up three
to nothing in their series against the Barry Colts next week.

The great guys over at Hockey stick Man are sponsoring
this video. If you play hockey but are sick of
paying upwards of four hundred dollars for top end sticks,
check these guys out. They're seriously no better place to shop.
The guys are fun, easy, and offer a stress free
experience from start to finish. They get pro stock sticks
from major junior teams right up to the NHL teams
and sell them for half the price that the same
stick would sell for at a retail store. To further
(26:13):
support their mission of saving hockey families money, they offer
close out options, which entail taking last year's retail models
and blowing them oll for less than wholesale prices. It's
literally the best prices on the internet for their sticks
and the best sticks of all. Maybe their pro Blackout
series would provide a top end stick with no graphics
and literally less than half the price of a branded
top end retail model. It's always been their best selling
(26:34):
stick despite super cool pro stock options. It's a no
brander to shop with these guys, and trust me they
are beauties. Head over to Hockeystickman dot CAA slash the

(28:46):
that we've been posting from the Ohl and sixty podcast
for from some of Colin Ward reesed to made these
great discussions that they.
Speaker 4 (28:51):
Have on that show.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
Colin, Before we get going with postgame thoughts from both
ends and again, there's a lot of postgame thoughts from
the kitchener Ra side, so we want to get through this,
uh quite quickly here. I know you've got something to
say about the broadcast and cutting in and out and
again it's unfortunate because uh West Final. You know this
is you know, before TSM takes over in the finals. Uh,
(29:14):
for the most part, I know you've got you got
some some opinions on that. We'll probably save save a
lot of it for the Ohl and sixty, but quickly
get it off your mind.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
Yeah, ill to say, sometimes sometimes you get the puck
on an empty net and you'll lose an edge and
the other team comes down in scares. Let us say that,
Dallas Edmonton. That was the broadcast night in my opinion,
well not the broadcast, the production I uh I did.
It was tough when the postgame interview, it was hard
to hear. So like you'll not wait to hear it
(29:42):
in a few minutes. I'll just say that. And Brandon,
you have me looking like an influencerrou on the reels.
I love it, appreciate it might get into the influence
game if you keep this up.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
Okay, great stuff, and uh, you know always wanting to
produce more and more great content and showcase what you
guys are talking about over there and what we're gonna
be doing in the OHL finals. A little teaser, We've
got got some stuff coming on for some some great
post game uh stuff for the finals that will We'll
try to debut at some point with yourself, Riest Domani, uh,
(30:12):
Joel Vanderlin. Everybody's been pitching in with the great stuff
during this playoff run and can't thank you enough for that.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
No, hey, thank you, I mean height, the grind starts
at the top. Just what I just gotta follow. You
set the tone. You know we need it. We need
a two hard, two way senator to score goals, right
and you're the guys so appreciate it and uh like
you say, whatever you need, I'm down.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
Takes a whole line to do it.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
But with that said, let's get to the London night
side first with head coach Dale Hunter as well as
defenseman of the Year in San Jose Sharks first round
pick Sam Dickinson on advancing to their third straight OHL championship.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
Here here's what they had to say.
Speaker 7 (30:50):
Dud most game coverage of Game four, Western Conference Championship
Series one nights four two winners, becoming the first un
o HL history three street awayas and trophies since uh
the trophy was first introduced in nineteen ninety.
Speaker 8 (31:03):
United the conference format.
Speaker 7 (31:05):
They also become the first WAGELL team since nineteen nine
and three Sue Great now being three strait trips to
DHL geis series, joined by head coach Dale Hunter along
with defenseman Sam Dickinson. Coach, have to imagine you're pride
of your team tonight, kidcher give you another good fight.
Speaker 8 (31:18):
But but you guys can went on the time. Yeah,
we did. They did. They played art and proud of
our team.
Speaker 5 (31:22):
They hit the battle back and we had a couple
of guys out, so put more minutes on earlier, Dickie
and Monkey.
Speaker 8 (31:29):
And but they excorpt really well.
Speaker 7 (31:33):
Sam golds Is for yourself tonight, the coach said, some
big nuts for you. But h third time you've been
through this, three wing guard seat trophies, and I'm sure.
Speaker 8 (31:41):
You're you're very proud of them. Yeah.
Speaker 9 (31:44):
Absolutely, I think, uh, you know, I think when I
think of you, think of the core of the team.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
This year.
Speaker 9 (31:49):
We've been together for basically, you know, the three years
that we've we've gone on this sort of run here,
so it's it's pretty special to be a part of
and just super proud of the whole group we've got
this year.
Speaker 8 (31:58):
We'll take questionings going to.
Speaker 10 (31:59):
Show for the coach twelve at all in the playoff
and four and off against the one hundred point team.
Speaker 8 (32:05):
How are the nice doing it? Maybe them easy?
Speaker 5 (32:07):
Well, like the players are really playing well defensively and
creating a lot offensively, so they did a good job
and by playing very well to complete hockey games.
Speaker 8 (32:19):
And we're hard to get beat by if we do that.
And then I've got guys that make sure.
Speaker 5 (32:25):
They they everybody plays the right way.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
Pulas, thank you.
Speaker 4 (32:31):
The difference sality the seasons over you love before me?
Speaker 8 (32:34):
What are the main difference on between you and the
series here?
Speaker 3 (32:40):
With the main difference was.
Speaker 5 (32:43):
You know something though, It's like again, our our guys came.
There are guys, big guys scored, but I thought wet
first we could play. We played good dat you know,
and we tried to shut them down as much as
you can. And AD's a credit to these guys because
there's no fun playing defense. All you do is we
want to score, so but uh, they they buy into
the the team game right here and and uh and
(33:05):
we've been through it before. So the Rangers they're young
and they haven't been through it as much, so you
have more experience the same the old the oldest call
that defensive style up fun?
Speaker 4 (33:16):
How does he get a bunch of teenagers here after.
Speaker 8 (33:18):
Year to buy incests?
Speaker 9 (33:21):
I think, Uh, it's the main thing is is you
know he's won everything in in this league and you
know I've done it for twenty five years now. You know,
every every kid coming in this league wants to win.
And if uh, if defending is what you gotta do here,
you know, it's uh something that we've all become used to.
And you know at this point we understand you know,
defenseman's championships and we learned that.
Speaker 8 (33:40):
Now does it ever be old news? No, It's always fun.
Speaker 5 (33:44):
It's always like always a battle though, like the end
of the game, the goalies poll guys in diving blocking.
You know, It's that's what makes it fun to coach
and play hockey.
Speaker 8 (33:54):
It's like the rival.
Speaker 11 (33:55):
Coach, do you just thought about you change plungeries with uh?
Speaker 1 (33:59):
You see ogus and your explain to us anything in the
US that's moving the n shaped liner.
Speaker 5 (34:03):
No, I just I said to him, the team, they
they're well coached, and they they played a good system
and uh, you know they had some young defenseman back there,
Unde and you know when young forward's in, so they'll
be better for the future.
Speaker 11 (34:19):
One for Sam obviously down the mark even or will
meet tonight up everybody else stepping up and contributing up
when you have couple guys out of the lineup and
you have some more step and you're able to buy
in and play what you need to do to win.
Just what does that being able to you know, your
team's collective and being able to get.
Speaker 8 (34:35):
Through something like that.
Speaker 9 (34:36):
Yeah, I think it's just the buying from the whole group.
You know, through the whole year, we've kind of gone through,
you know, guys being in and out of line up
with you know, injuries, you know, guys being away with
you know, whatever it was. So, you know, not something
that we're super uncomfortable with. You know, we've gotten used
to through the whole year with with guys being out.
So it's you know a credit to a lot of
the guys out here who kind of step up when
(34:56):
when we need them.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
There were Sam Dickinson and head coach Dale Hunter from
the London Knights postgame calling. Jared Woolley suspended for one game,
so again the decorp had to be tested once again.
Sam Dickinson felt like he never came off the ice,
Oliver Bonks taking a step in his defensive game this season.
But the collective buy in, as they talk about, was
(35:19):
something that made the Nights so successful. And you know,
you've seen so many Dale Hunter teams over the over
the past. It's you know, it's just the way that
he is able to get those guys to play a
winning system and know that it works.
Speaker 3 (35:32):
Yeah, it starts from the top. As you mentioned Dale
Hunter and staff. They do a great job. Dylan Hunter
and Brick Steven, those guys are really hands on assistant
coaches as well to Dale Hunter. They really compliment each
other well. Veteran leadership. Hearing Sam Dickinson talk, it's hard
to believe you it's another year of eligibility left. He
sounds like an overrager. It it starts from the top,
(35:54):
but the players accept it and it goes to the
draft with Mark Hunter where in their scouting staff Robs
since and etc. Those guys do a heck of a
job at scouting character. Get guys that accept the London
night way how you want to play the game, and
this is how we play the game here. If you
accept it, you're gonna be a very successful player for us.
(36:15):
If you don't, you would not be a successful player
for us. There's a bottom line to it, and I
think that that's what they do. Sam Dickinson was incredible tonight, Brandon,
he really was. And they're not afraid to ride their
horses like we saw that today, Jacob Julian getting a
lot of big face offs late in the game, Sam Dickinson, obviously,
(36:36):
Easton Cowen, and the list goes on. But they really
ride their horses and that's fine because they have the
depth to back it up as well. And I think
that they really compliment each other so well, the players
accepting the coaches, and the coaches are patient as well
with the players that they bring in.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
Yep, defense isn't fun, but it wins championships and that's
what they all's been able to do with teenagers that
love to score goals and some top end players, some
top end NHL prospects, you know, doing what they need
to do to win games, and Sam Dickinson was obviously
one of those main contributors as you mentioned, in all
two hundred feet of this series, I would say he
was the best player in the in the entire series
(37:14):
of the four games, just logged so many minutes for
them on the back end. But luckily they had two sweeps,
they didn't play as many games. So let's get to
the Kitchener Rangers side with head coach U s. A.
Hokus as well as over age goaltender Jackson Parsons goaltender
of the Year, overage player of the Year, and his
final thoughts as he leaves the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium ice
(37:34):
for the final time.
Speaker 8 (37:36):
Having corpost game covered the game before the Western Conference.
Speaker 7 (37:39):
Championship series, a lot of ice for two winners tonight
to run out of the series. Waker as to Rope Champions,
joined by Kitchen Rakers head coach us Hocus and veteran
wiltender Jackson Parsons.
Speaker 8 (37:49):
Coach. To start with, you tough to find the possums
right now, but got one hundred points this season, that's
a hard tall playoff. Maybe you could share your immediate
thoughts right now. Well, London was good. They're a great team.
Speaker 12 (38:04):
Ten NHL signed players, fourteen drafted players. I thought at
home we played better. Today wasn't our day. They scored
in the power play and we took a little bit penalties.
But it is what it is. For nothing, you lose.
(38:25):
They're the better team and we have to learn. Then,
if I look at the long run from last year
to this year, we evolved. We're a young team. When
you think about we had eight sixteen to seventeen year
old players in our lineup in this conference finals. We
have quite a young young core coming up getting that
(38:50):
hundred points. All in all, I look at this team
we had. It was a big team like it worked
worked hard for each other, and that's I think the
big big thing for our success. I think not maybe
the skilled team while we had Parsons, he was our star,
and but yeah, the team worked, worked for each other,
(39:12):
and UH and UH have to be proud of the
boys we had compared to last year.
Speaker 8 (39:19):
A big, big job forward.
Speaker 12 (39:22):
Last year we dropped second round and now we went
to third round and then again we'll keep building our
team and I see a bright future ahead for for
our hockey club. But of course today it hurts, hurts
to lose it for should at least took one or
two at home home.
Speaker 8 (39:41):
But we're just gonna do it right now.
Speaker 10 (39:45):
Jackson probably love to take in for you right now.
Speaker 8 (39:47):
Been through a lot of.
Speaker 7 (39:48):
Games in his building and a couple of years ago
you got to play five games. You look, you know,
look how you're ready to rebut that and of course
you know big guys a team.
Speaker 8 (39:57):
Maybe he's walk us through how you're feeling.
Speaker 13 (39:59):
Yeah, obviously the doing sucks right now, but like you
see said, like there's so much positive to look back
from as a team like are to bounce back from
that first weekend when frankly we got whooped and to
go and get a hundred points like that's that's insane.
That's the fourth time in franchise history. So as much
(40:19):
as it hurts right now and the game sucked, I'm
just really proud of the guys.
Speaker 10 (40:26):
One question for Chief started with U Jackson.
Speaker 8 (40:29):
There's a lot of positives to season. Obviously maybe they're ard,
they're top at you right now. But when you think that,
what's what's gonna jump.
Speaker 13 (40:37):
To the forefront for you?
Speaker 8 (40:38):
And what was the most positive move to season.
Speaker 13 (40:40):
I think the hundred points like that was that was
a really cool thing to accomplish, and obviously with a
few games to go, we knew that it was possible,
but we had to go on like a seven and
two run or something in the last nine games and
to be able to uh accomplish that is something I'll
never forget.
Speaker 10 (40:55):
Go to you a nice schook for the other season,
for your over games seat your success in your answer
was the Western Conference final. When you look back on
this season as a whole, this is a success for you.
Speaker 8 (41:06):
Other Rangers.
Speaker 12 (41:07):
Well, yeah, if somebody would have told me start of
the season that we get a hundred points and we're
in the Western Conference finals, I would said, shook hands,
say yeah, let's do that.
Speaker 8 (41:16):
So I would have been yeah, so yeah, I can
be happy about it.
Speaker 12 (41:20):
Of course, losing the conference final and of course you
want to go move forward. We knew London had this
was their year they had to start. They didn't really
lose any any top guys from last year and they
keept building. We knew that they had a really, really
really good team. I have to say, I have to say,
(41:41):
and what I've seen so far like not many times
the junior team's that good and yeah, but we had
for me, it was a good season for sure, can
be proud of that. But still we need to be
better because we've we came or I here and our
whole coaching staff, we want to win win over here
(42:04):
and we want to make the Kitchener.
Speaker 8 (42:07):
Kitchen are a great again.
Speaker 4 (42:19):
The youth on this team, what do you.
Speaker 10 (42:23):
Think you guys learned as a unit and what can
you take from this run this season, this playoff the
next season to help this team maybe the next step you're.
Speaker 12 (42:33):
Talking about, Well, first of all, like just getting the
experienced sixteen playoff games, coming back from three to zero
to go four and come here to the conference finals.
I thought somehow seventeen year old's Romano Lammer, they took
huge steps towards their game and really proud of them,
(42:55):
but more just to getting the experience and what it
means like to win these games, what you have to do.
Speaker 8 (43:01):
And still London was a little bit more experienced that you.
Speaker 12 (43:05):
Could see in some situations for sure, like they played
a little bit smarter. So we have to learn and
I think we can learn from this, like every little
situation matters can take stupid penalties because they can catch
you like all the small things, and you have.
Speaker 8 (43:28):
To be ready.
Speaker 12 (43:29):
And then again we learned like it's just one game
at a time and you can't quit, Like we didn't
quit against Windsor, and I don't think we didn't quit
against London either, even though it was for nothing, but
we still even low. For one, we took the goalie
out game four two and kept pushing, kept pushing, but.
Speaker 8 (43:51):
Just wasn't enough.
Speaker 12 (43:52):
And but for me, the biggest thing is how much
experience our players. We have a lot of guys will
be coming back next year. We won't be losing too bad.
We won't get Parses back, but the over ages and
not many more. If somebody makes NHL or form team,
then that's a different thing. But I would say we
(44:13):
won't probably lose maybe four or four four guys or
not even that.
Speaker 8 (44:19):
So we'll see see how it goes.
Speaker 4 (44:22):
As the final moments, like real there in that last lap.
Speaker 11 (44:26):
With the Prestwick was O through your mind and your
emotions there as you left the pas more elatory the
last time.
Speaker 13 (44:32):
No, obviously in one way it sucks, but in one
way it's you know, the best standing possible, you know,
to be able to finish at home and to be
able to say thank you to the fans one last time.
They've They've been so good to me and I'm so
proud to be a Ranger, and obviously to be able
to do it with Trend as well.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
We were Billett brothers our.
Speaker 13 (44:51):
First year, so I'm I'm so close with him and
he's he's a brother for life for me, and obviously
he's gonna do great things in Vegas. So no, I'm
just so proud of 'em. And yeah, we we want
to do one last lap together, so.
Speaker 8 (45:03):
Last for coach.
Speaker 4 (45:04):
I know Jackson's a big part of your successes here.
But turning away, if afty goals for were one of
the season, you know really what this team would be.
How did you get them to buy in?
Speaker 11 (45:11):
You mentioned such a young group coming back, but uh,
how did you get them to buy into what we
needed to do to play and to get to this moment?
Speaker 12 (45:17):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (45:17):
You know from from day one training camp?
Speaker 12 (45:19):
Well, I think we started building culture from the day
one when I came here and just what is our
kitchener way how we play? And uh, and I think
that all the guys who were here last year, they
knew already, so they.
Speaker 8 (45:34):
Kind of grew and grew.
Speaker 12 (45:36):
And for sure we defended well and we had of
course great goaltending. But I think the biggest thing in
the culture and how we how we do things here,
how we practice, how we play play our style of play.
Speaker 8 (45:52):
We don't give up.
Speaker 12 (45:53):
We have grit, We played hard, we defend well, and
now we have to sell have a little bit better offense.
But that's again, piece by piece we want to keep
moving forward.
Speaker 3 (46:09):
Jackson, what does it need to Benger?
Speaker 8 (46:15):
Oh, it's unbelievable.
Speaker 13 (46:16):
It means the world. I mean to be able to
say that I was a Kitchen Ranger.
Speaker 3 (46:19):
For my entire HL career. I wouldn't change it for
the world.
Speaker 13 (46:23):
You know, from the staff to the players to the
higher up management, everyone is just so kind, so nice,
so welcoming. And for any other Ranger draft pick or
you know, some of the younger guys, they've got so
much to look forward to to being in this organization
and being a big part of it.
Speaker 8 (46:42):
It means the world.
Speaker 1 (46:46):
Well said, and great way to end the Kitchener Rangers
final post game of the season. Calling from uc A
Hocus and Goaltender of the Year, Overage Player of the Year,
graduating Goaltender Team MVP. Jackson Parsons those last few questions there,
you could definitely hear the emotion in his voice about
how much pride he took and didn't want to take
that jersey off. He came to the press conference in
(47:08):
full gear as a goaltender. Not easy thing to do,
but I want to get your reaction to what he
had to say.
Speaker 3 (47:15):
Yeah, that's a tough one, you know, it's definite. It
definitely doesn't kick in yet probably for Jackson other than
last time on the ice and that stuff. You think
about it, But tomorrow definitely you'll probably hurt. It's a
couple of days go by, locker room clean out day.
That obviously sucks. That's gonna hurt. But what a career
(47:35):
Jackson Parsons had in the OHL, I can honestly, I'm
so fascinating to see where he goes from now in
the pro side of hockey, because he's deserved it throughout
his whole career of the ups and downs he's had
in the Entil Hockey League and hearing that interview when
he's brought in the kitchen with Kitchener's brought to him.
What a relationship. And that's the beauty of our league.
(47:57):
When you get to go to communities as sixteen years old,
seven ten years old for that matter, the impact they
have on your life is second to none. It's crazy,
the community support around the chl in general. And you
see that first hand in Kitchener with Jackson Parsons, and
you see that with Jackson returning the favor as well
with the city of Kitchener.
Speaker 4 (48:18):
I liked Uci Jochus.
Speaker 1 (48:19):
I don't know if he meant to have a nice
SoundBite and a nice you know line for a shirt
for next year, but make Kitchener great again definitely was
an interesting one. And again he mentions that young core
that they've built and why asked them about that buy
in about you know, they trade away Carson Raykoff in
the off season for draft picks and you're thinking, Okay,
this is gonna be a rebuild year for a really
(48:39):
young Kitchener Rangers team. Almost familiar with where the London
Knights were three years ago when they maybe made the
Ohl Finals a little bit early when they lost to Peterborough.
But a great season for the Kitchener Rangers and their
windows definitely open for the next two years. But a
great job by U see a Hocus coming in and
really building the culture here with the Kitchener Rangers, and
I think you know it's only the beginning for them.
(49:01):
I know you've said that they're going to be at
least in the Western Conference Final next season again on
the Ohl and sixty podcast.
Speaker 4 (49:08):
I'm sure you still think those words are the same.
Speaker 3 (49:10):
A hundred percent. I think sky's a limit for them.
I really like the direction that club's head heading into
for next season. I really do.
Speaker 1 (49:18):
Yeah, Nope, Jackson Parsons, but I'm sure they'll They'll figure
something out in the net and most of their players
are coming back, so really interesting for the Kitchener Rangers.
While we were listening to that, shout out to London
Knight's great radio voice that we love listening to, Colin
Mike Stubbs tweeted out the London Knights have played seven
hundred and twenty six minutes and forty nine seconds of
(49:40):
hockey in the twenty twenty five OHL Playoffs. They have
been behind in games for only thirty minutes and fifty
one seconds through twelve games. They trailed Owen Sound for
fifteen minutes eerie four just under fourteen and they only
trailed the Kitchen Rangers for fifty six seconds in this
entire series again goes to show just how good this
(50:00):
Kitchen or Rangers, or sorry, this London Knights team has
been through the first twelve games of their playoffs.
Speaker 3 (50:06):
Yeah. Absolutely, I mean they're a wagon. They're humming, they're
feeling good, and it's amazing they can do that. Well,
it almost doesn't feel real bran and that's how that's
how good they've been.
Speaker 1 (50:21):
So before we get out of here, we're gonna put
calling on the spot as always with our stick Tap
of the Game, brought to you by Hockey stick Man
pro Stock Hockey six for major junior teams right up
to the NHL teams for after retail price, a stress
free shopping experience and start to finish Jurner mission at
Hockey Stickman dot ca uh to save hockey families money. Colin,
who is your player of the game for Game four
of the West Final tonight?
Speaker 3 (50:41):
My player of the game is Sam Dickinson. A lot
of the Knights I thought Dickinson played a really good game.
As you mentioned, never came off the ice. He did
everything you had to do tonight as a defense in
his role to for his team to be successful. It
was an unselfish game from him, and I think Sam
Dickinson by far best player in this game.
Speaker 1 (51:00):
The in house stars went to Jackson Parsons, Trent Swick
and Yak Kroniac as the overage players, and again can't
really get too mad about that. I'm pretty sure every
team does that on the ones that don't make the playoffs.
But again, if you were to pick three stars, Dickinson
would definitely be up there, as well as Jacob Julian
impossibly you know Oliver Bonk as another one, or Casper
Halton and with the effects that they had on this game.
Speaker 4 (51:22):
So Colin, as we wrap things up.
Speaker 1 (51:23):
Here's still gonna have to wait to see if it's
gonna be the Oshawa Generals who are up three nothing
on the Barry Colts, or if Barry can pull what
Kitchener did in the last series against Windsor and come
back and win four straight. But regardless of London Knights,
we'll get more time off once again, getting through and
Sound in four games, getting through the Erieadters in four games,
and now getting through their rival Kitchener Rangers in four games.
(51:44):
As we look ahead to the OHL Championship next week,
just quick initial thoughts here as you know, we wait
to see what London's gonna play and again still undefeated.
I don't know if they're gonna be able to go
sixteen to know, but if they did, they'd be quite
the story.
Speaker 3 (51:57):
Yeah, you know, they're they're bagging up a little, but
they're nicked up London like every team, and they haven't
played a lot of games, but they're nicked up. Their
captain's out and he's probably gonna miss a little bit
of time. But it's the way that it's a way
that's playoff hockey. It takes a lot to win. I mean,
you gotta you gotta wrest the body, stay healthy, stay
(52:18):
stay in the zone, stay locked in. Sometimes and you
have that much time off, it's tough. But they've been
on this routine for the whole postseason so far. So
who am I to say that with their routine being
thrown off getting time off and they've had this amount
of time off all all postseason. I just think you
keep doing what you're doing and stay in your routine
and you'll be fine. We'll see what happens though, who
(52:39):
they play. I mean, if Barry could get some clutch saves,
I mean, the series could be a lot different Barry
in Oshawa. But Oshawa certainly looks really good so far.
But you never know. Barry could do a North Bay
and win a couple of games in a force of
game seven like the Battalion did last year in the
conference final against Osawa.
Speaker 1 (52:56):
Yeah, thank goodness that game. This game didn't go to
double overtime like that one did last night in a
thriller a game three, I think we both would have
been saying, yeah, let's wait.
Speaker 4 (53:03):
Till tomorrow for this. But that's it.
Speaker 1 (53:05):
Colin Ward from the OHL and sixty podcast, calling, thanks
so much for taking the time. You know we got
an early morning again for work, but I know you
always love coming on chatting a boat, especially the London nights,
but OHL hockey in general, there's nobody else I enjoy
talking OHL hockey with more than you, my friend.
Speaker 3 (53:21):
Thank you appreciate the time. Brandon, another fun one.
Speaker 1 (53:25):
Absolutely so we'll hear more from Colin as we go
forward into the OHL playoffs. But that's going to wrap
it up for our OHL overtime game recap a Game
four of the OHL Western Conference Final between the London
Knights and the kitchen Rangers. London wins this one by
a four to two score and sweep the series and
our Wayne Gretzky Trophy recipients for a third straight year,
and they will wait to see if they're facing the
(53:46):
Berry Colts the Oshawa Generals in the OHL Final in
front of a crowd at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium of
