Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to the Armchair GM Sports Network.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Week number two of the Ohl and sixty podcast for
the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six season.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Back with You.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
I'm rest Maani along with Colin Ward, and it's a
fiery episode. You could say, we're where we were getting
fired up pregame because the Broncos lost steel. We gotta
start with that, Brandon's Falcons lost, the Ks are celebrating
making the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
It's already falling from Mars and the Yankees. You don't
have gloves and you I think that's.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
I think that's it. I think that's all we were
ranting about before. And there were a couple other things
that we can't share because this is a PG show,
but it's kind of PG PG twelve. I think maybe
I don't know, we're not good for ranking stuff, so
let's say PG twelve. But yeah, we're uh, we're off
(01:56):
to a fiery start here for episode two. And you know,
we've got a couple of shout outs off the top
of the show, of course, so we'll get to that,
but we'll kind of run through what we've got for
you in the next sixty minutes here on the Ohl
and sixty podcast. It includes, of course, headlines from this
past week in the Ontario Hockey League, and there's quite
a few tou to go through as you see them
(02:19):
popping up on your screen here on the YouTube channel
for the Armchair GM Sports Network. Appreciate everybody tuning in,
whether you're watching on video, I feel bad for you
that you have to look at us. For anyone listening
on any audio platform, welcome in as well. So yeah,
always tell headlines from from week number one. We've got
flow hockey. Colin Ward is what's up man?
Speaker 3 (02:42):
If they're watching on video, I got the light figured
out this week.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
I got the light long enough.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
Yeah, I know, I got the old Okay right out here,
Dell hi oh Mantario jeez.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
So we're gonna go through through flow hockey. We've seen
some things.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
It's week one again, we're not really gonna get too
deep into it.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
It is week one. Probably gonna be some bugs that
have to be fixed. That is life here in twenty
twenty five. So we'll just kind of touch on that,
what we thought about a few things. Players of the
Week we're announced on Monday, so we'll go through that
and then we're gonna talk about a couple of barns
that have a lot of history in them. The Kitchener
Memorial Auditorium had their renovation completed in the off season.
(03:33):
Colin Ward was there opening night against the Bulldogs and
he'll share his thoughts and opinions on the new media
room and how awesome he he thinks the new decorps
is and that he almost became a felon because he
wanted to steal something from it. So we'll touch on that.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Of course, a Bulldog's logo's great.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
BMC it is.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Yeah, yeah, I can't wait for the photos. I was
not there work, you know, but PMC not up to
par And I can tell you that the City of
Peterborough did come to Saint Catharines earlier on this year
to get a look at the Meridian Center for the
possibility of a new building in Peterborough. So we'll get
to that when we get to that topic. Those who
will kind of be be grouped together. And then we
(04:23):
didn't do it last week. We slacked a little bit.
Two teams fighting for the Memorial Cup next year it's
Kitchener and Gwelph. Who's gonna get it. We're gonna debate
who we think might be a better host. I think
both will be fine, but who do we think will
get it. We'll touch on that the Owen Sound Attack
have three good goaltenders, what the heck are they gonna do?
(04:47):
And we're gonna apologize to a certain family for Owen
Sound and their third netminder that had to lead them
into the first weekend of the regular season. And so
we'll touch on that and then over Reaction Tuesday here
on the Ohl and sixty podcast. It's something we do
(05:07):
quite a bit throughout the early stages of the year
every year that we've we've had this show, so Overreaction
Tuesday will be taking place to to wrap things up,
and of course the power rankings through week one.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Their power rankings. We'll get to that later.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
So before we get started, though, we're gonna give a
shout out to one of our buddies, one of our colleagues,
Dylan Baker, the new voice of the gwelf Storm on
the radio side c Joy. He made his debut this
past weekend with a couple of contests for the gwelf Storm,
So just want to give a huge congratulations to him.
(05:44):
Worked hard. For sure, nineteen year old to get a
gig in the in the Ohl is difficult, to say
the least. So so we want to give a shout
out to to Dylan Baker called a couple of games
with him the London Majors. We were joined by Easton
Cowen one of those games when he came back from
Leif's camp or no, he came back to London and
(06:05):
then was going to Leafs camp, but he had stopped
by Lebat Memorial Park for a game and he came
up to the booth and we had a half an
inning with him. So Baker, a professional, doesn't get any
better than that. Did a phenomenal job with Komocha before
leaving for the Gwelf Storm. So just want to give
a shout out to him because that's pretty cool for
Dylan Baker to get that at nineteen years old.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yeah, he's above his years, that's for sure. He's definitely
not a normal nineteen year old, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, yeah, big time, So congratulations Dylan, that's very well deserved.
And then I don't know if we've got a photo
for my boy Alec or not, but Alec Bennett, I
mean Alec Murray. Sorry my mistake. Jeez, I should have
done my research before Alec Murray was. He made his
OHL debut as the host of the Niagara Ice Dogs
(06:54):
game on Sunday against the Sudbury Wolves for their home opener.
So Alec Murray shout out to you. Uh, we're champs
with the well and Jackfish. He's now a backup. I
guess you could say a fill in for for Niagara
Ice Dogs broadcast, So give a shout out to Alec
Murray for for that one as well. But uh, let's
get into some of the headlines, Colin. There's a couple
(07:15):
of things to talk about. Vancouver Docks were busy with
their OHL talent on on Monday because Gabriel Sharrot and
Riley Patterson have signed their three year entry level contracts,
and huge congratulations to them for sure. You know, into
into week two of the the OHL season, you have
to imagine they're gonna be back anytime soon now with
(07:36):
the with their respective clubs. But congratulations to both of them,
and Vancouver coming to the OH for some talent, getting
a couple of guys signed there.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Yeah, you know, I'm I'm obviously familiar with both guys,
but especially Gabriel Sharat Patterson.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
I mean when he didn't bury.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Now going over to Niagara for the opportunity he's gonna
get there in Saint Catharines is huge with the Ice Dogs.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
He's gonna be a leader there. He's gonna be a
point of game guy.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
You hope he tends to have a solid year there
in Niagara. But Gabriel Sharat, the year he had in
the development in his career so far short career has
been incredible. I remember watching him in his draft year
in Branford with the ninety nine ers program with Lucas Carmierras,
Tommy Carmierras, Braid mccallumeric, Van Aker from the Dell Hi
(08:19):
Ontario along with Brad McCallum, had to shout those guys out,
great city guys like myself. Gabriel Sharrot, I mean, the
the improvement in his career has been incredible. He was
that guy on the lot on that team that was
under you know, he had to drive the line like
he had to be the guy that's in the fore
check all the time. Really be the physical guy with
(08:40):
those guys like with Carmiras or with Man acker. He
had to be in the mix with those guys, like
he's always in the middle of things, such an effective
player in that role. And he comes up and all
of a sudden he gets bigger and stronger, the relative
of Ben Sharrott Detroit Red Wing. He gets bigger and
he gets stronger. And you saw it last year his
draft year with Brampton. You saw his ability on the pack,
(09:04):
how hard he was at times on the pocket, a
limited role sometimes he had different roles with Brampton all year.
One day he's on the fourth line, the next he's
on the first line. Like he had different roles every game.
He didn't know what role he was gonna have, but
he did a good job in every role he was in.
Huge to get the contracts right away too, that's exciting.
So congrats to boat those guys. But Gabe Sharad, I mean,
(09:25):
what he brought to the table in his career so far.
So excited to see what he can be. He's gonna
be one of those guys that goes into the NHL
and he's gonna have a really minimum He's gonna have
a really good career on the third, fourth line, killing penalties,
big guy, killing penalty's net front, possibly on the power play.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
I'm really excited to see what he can do.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
That's huge.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Yeah, So Patterson's already been moved. He was moved from
Barry and Niagara. Of course, with Brampton not expected to
do a ton this season in the Eastern Conference and
in the Ontario Hockey League, it's sharat a name that
you could see moving clubs, whether it's tomorrow, whether it's
next month, deadline, whatever the case might be. Do you
(10:07):
think that's a name that James Richmond will be hearing
on phone calls come come the trade deadline. Well, if
I'm Sharod, I love the situation that I'm in. To
be honest, I mean Brampton, they work hard, they work hard,
and I think that the where Sharad is there, he's
gonna have an opportunity to be a guy. He's gonna
have the chance to be a full time number one guy.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Right. They shipped out Lucas Carmierz, They shipped out some
guys and Sharo's gonna have the opportunity now to be
a guy that is gonna be able to get points.
So the first time his career, he's gonna be one
of the focal points on an offensive part of the
script of a team.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
So that's huge and I can't wait to see what
he can do.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
And obviously he's gonna be the leader on guys that
are gonna work hard on that team.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Next headline the Ohl Battle of the Border, returning in
twenty twenty six. I was fired up when I saw
this one. But the under sixteen Triple A teams from
both sides of the bridge will go ahead to head
at the Ohl Battle of the Border at the WFCU Center,
of course, home of the windsor spit Fires, you know,
(11:09):
go over the article. There's a brief press release about it.
Stay tuned for more updates for the event, of course.
But all of the Border, I mean, I'm yeah, I'm
kind of pumped for that.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Of course.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
In twenty nineteen, the United States was say the successful
group I guess you could say, in in that tournament
fifty four to fifty one in a showcase. So, I
mean Hunter Brustovitch was there, Coach of delic Max Domesnikov,
Isaiah George Rutger McGroarty was there, Frank Nazar part of
(11:43):
that as well. Like those are names, so like this
is this is pretty exciting. We're gonna have to wait
a year, but but to have this back is gonna
be pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
Yeah. No, I'm excited for this.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
It's kind of it goes hand in hand right with
the prospect with the CHL Versus and DYP or NDP team,
Like it kind of makes sense, like it's cool to
have this back, great spot and wins here for it.
I'm excited to see. I'm I'm really excited to see
where this can go. And obviously, with the way the
world is and the way the hockey landscape is, I
think there's gonna be more eyes on this. I think
(12:14):
there's more intrigue to this game, so it's exciting. It's
gonna be like a robbery. It's not gonna be like
an exhibition game. It's gonna be like a Four Nations
game where Cana Sa was complete riot.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
Like that's what it's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
That's what it's gonna be, and I think that's the
best interest for the fans consumer. I mean, that's all
you want. So I'm excited to see. And obviously you
can't tell a kid to go half assed, So I'm
excited to see what it can be. You're gonna you're
gonna you're gonna really see the outcome, like you're gonna
see the effort there, and I'm excited for that. Like
they're gonna be playing a lot of scouts, right, so
it's gonna be cool. Yep.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
Absolutely. Also four OHL is.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Included in TSN's preseason rankings for the twenty twenty six
NHL Draft, led by Ryan Roebrick. Not surprised there at
number four, Ethan Belchests Windsor spit Fires number five. Then
you get Chase Reid a number ten of the Sue Greyhounds,
and then import forward Adam Novotny number twelve rounds out
(13:10):
the Ohl representations. So calling again number one two, Roebrick
and Belchez not really surprised by either of those.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
Two young men.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Winsor spit Fire is gonna be near the top of
the conference in the West, and then the a Niagara
Ice Dogs. I've got them winning the division. You know,
He's gonna be looked upon again to get a lot
of points, to score a lot of big goals, and
if Kevin he passes like he does with the Winnipeg Jets,
then that total is going to rise for for Ryan
Robrick and Ice Dogs fans, are you know they they
(13:41):
get a treat, you could say, with Roebrick having the
late birthday and getting that extra year before he gets
drafted into the NHL. So those two guys, I mean,
I don't know how much we could really say. They've
got the size, they've got the talent, they've got great
puck smarts, and they're gonna be looked upon heavily on
each club to provide offense.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
Yeah, no, without a doubt.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
I mean they're gonna have a high offensive roles for
sure on their clubs. I mean they're depending on every
single night, right, every night those guys are if they're
gonna be if their teams are gonna be successful, their
individual success is huge to their team success. So I'm like,
I think these two guys, I mean, Belchez and Wins here,
they're kind of different players, right, and I mean you
saw Roebrick mix it up a little bit, I guess too.
But Belchez is the big power forward who's gonna drive
(14:26):
to the middle of the ice. Roebricks that guy who's
gonna be really good out on the perimeter, high effective
in the scoring areas.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Obviously, with that release that he has, He's not afraid
of the rough stuff. So it's cool. It's gonna be
nice to see those two guys.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
I mean, I think that Chase Reid's really gonna work
his way up the draft board throughout the year. He's
gonna be the guy right in all the minutes and Sue.
I think that with Chase Reid, he's a guy that
anyone watching the sus Saint Marie Greyhounds last season and
so far here in the early early season, they fallen
in love with. He's a guy that is plays all
(15:00):
all the role, plays all the roles at all aspects
of the game. He has unbelievable that He's's best defender.
He's also Sue's best offensive defenseman as well. So when
you have a guy like that, he can lock a
lot of minutes. It's so good on both ends. You
gotta be excited for him. I mean, you look at
him being like the future stud here in the league.
Like is he got a little bit of mean streak,
He can hit a little bit, he can he engage
(15:22):
his physically, which is huge to see that. So I'm
excited to see, Like I'm I'm really pumped to see
what Chase Reekan do in the draft. I think that
with I think with Reed. I mean, who doesn't like
a defenseman who's incredible both ways?
Speaker 4 (15:34):
Right? That's such? That's so eye can't he the scouts?
Speaker 3 (15:37):
Yep?
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Absolutely, I'm I'm with you on that. In terms of headlines, Colin,
did I miss anything? Do you have anything to go
over here before we head onto flow hockey?
Speaker 4 (15:51):
Yep, yes, they're returning.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Great point.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
We always we always miss something always, So I have
a question.
Speaker 6 (15:59):
You're never gonna miss Niagre stuff when I'm around?
Speaker 3 (16:02):
Very true? Thanks Als, brother, shout out to Al's brother.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
No, we gotta get a name. Al's brothers take that name. Yeah, no,
we need a name.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Heck, Brandon, you need a sibling. I think. Hmm, that's tough. Hey, Brandon,
did they move? Did they move his stall at all?
Did they still have a stall? Does he have the
same stall in the dressing room in Niagara? Because that
I'd be wild.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
Yeah, that'd be hilarious. I have to ask about that,
all right, Thank you.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Brandon on the case for us.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
But here here here's here's here's how the trade reads.
It was Hayden Reid Ardam Frolov and Brampton's eighth rounder
in twenty twenty six, heading to Niagara for Charlie Hotless
Niagara sixth in twenty twenty six, North Bays fourth in
twenty twenty seven and Peterborough's third in two thousand and
twenty eight. Shout out to Josh Sweetland because he might
(16:57):
have had one of the biggest tweets of the year
kind of explaining the whole sending these guys back to
where they came from. And it's probably a really bad
way to put that, but I'm if I'm not mistaken,
it's thirteen months that you have to not trade somebody
(17:18):
back to the team that you acquired him from. So
Josh Sweetland shout out to him for that. There has
to be thirteen months between trades if you're gonna send
the same guy back.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
So that's cool.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
I didn't know that. I didn't know that existed. So again,
shout out to Josh for that. But Colin, what do
you what do you make of this? I like the
trade for both sides.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
I mean, Reid had a big impact right away on
Sunday for the Ice Dogs, the first Ryerson Edgar goal,
Reid's four check there to force a turnover.
Speaker 4 (17:50):
Is what you're gonna get from him. That that was textbook.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
But I haven't saw an ice dog forward make a
four check like that in probably seven years. That is
that was cool to see the impact he has in
the for check to create space for his teammates. He's
gonna be second to none on that team. I mean, now,
I love that part of the AD. I know, I
don't think he's the main focal point of the AD,
but he's an effective player for them. He was a
(18:13):
high round pick for them. Getting him back is huge.
They kind of got that core back together now from
that draft. Accidentally got him back er I guess purposely
accidentally got him back trade them originally and then they
got him back, so obviously wanted them both both ways.
Speaker 4 (18:29):
But no, I love that impact already right away.
Speaker 3 (18:31):
You're already seeing it payoff on the first Edgar goal
on Sunday when he's hard on the four check, forces
a turnover and boom. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Absolutely, Hotels, right his nickname Brandon Hontless Hotels.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Yep, Chuck Hotels, Chuck Hotels.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
I heard that on the bus last year when I
filled in for those games. I'm like, yeah, that makes sense, Hotless,
it's close enough. Well we'll say that, but Brandon, if
you don't mind just staying on with us here for
a second, And what is what are the Flint Firebirds
getting in?
Speaker 4 (19:02):
Charlie Hotless a hard worker.
Speaker 6 (19:04):
He's a guy that would he he was one of
those guys that wasn't in the lineup much last year,
but he didn't complain about it. He just waited around
for his opportunity, practiced hard, and when he got in
the lineup, he you know, did whatever they asked him
to do as a fourth line player, you know, just
go in there on the ford check, play hard, play
your role well, and just know that, like as a
young player, you're going to earn those opportunities eventually when
(19:27):
you go into your second and third year. So Hollis
is a guy I think that was ready to take
a step forward. But Niagara having so much new new
blood on the forward group with GM Frankie Vola bringing
in all those new guys that he kind of got
lost in the shuffle, lost in the fold, and maybe
Flint also valued him as a part of this trade
and you know brought him in. But I do like
(19:48):
what Hotless brings. We'll see what he does with a
bigger opportunity, actually getting to play in the lineup for
possibly a whole season.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Yeah, yeah, that's the thing, right, And that's that's what
makes that JU your B or the G O j
h L. I guess it's Junior B agreement so much better,
right is you know, of course the better access to players, right,
But yeah, you have an opportunity to play. And I'm
curious what hot List would have done with an opportunity
if he was on a squad that was in a
(20:16):
lower league.
Speaker 6 (20:18):
He was signed with the North York Rangers and the
Okay and then got the call up. But again, so
he's a big body and it took him a little
bit of time to get used to the speed at
this level.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
I think that's something that I do adjust to.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
But well, that's all right.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
I just wish with the card, I just wish the
card thing would change with the agreement. That's the only
thing I have on the development with the G. I
wish there any more access on players able to play
without cards and without all that coming in.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
I wish it was easier. I wish it was more
like the No.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
I know, obviously I know, I can't be I wish
it was more like the AHL NHL agreement, where you
know it's on the if you have a card, it's
like that. But it it's exciting for sure. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
So that original trade August nineteenth, twenty twenty four, part
of the Tristan Bertucci deal between Flint and Niagara, and
then exactly thirteen months later this happens September nineteenth, twenty
twenty five. So again it's Reed and fro Lov along
with a Brampton eighth rounder this upcoming Ohl priority selection
(21:23):
to Niagara for Charlie Hotless, a Niagara sixth and twenty
twenty six, North Base fourth and twenty twenty seven and
Peterborough's third in two thousand and twenty eight.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
And moving on.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
To flow and speaking of flow hockey, Friday Night face
off this week coming up on the twenty six, that
is the Joshaua Generals visiting.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
The gwelf Storm.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Of course you can catch out on all social media
platforms that's x, Facebook, YouTube, and of course streaming on
Flow Hockey as well. So that leads us into that
that flow hockey discussion Colin, and you know, we saw
some things out eat. Then we don't have this choice
in the Ontario Hockey League, where I know we can
have both audios, you know, and and it's a little
(22:10):
different the way the Ontario Hockey League does it compared
to the w HL and compared to the Queue, where
it's really just you've got two radio broadcasts out east
and out west and it's simulcast with video for for
all the viewers. The Ontario Hockey League minus Eerie Flint
and Saganaw and I guess Branford, you've got a television
(22:35):
broadcast team and depending on the team, you've got two
radio broadcasts. So in Ontario you've got the TV broadcast
audio option, that's it. Whereas out East it sounds like
they've got the option for both where you can choose
the visiting broadcast or the home broadcast audio. And that Monkton,
(22:57):
Newfoundland game, the heck of a hockey game. What was
that seven to five?
Speaker 3 (23:02):
I think it was?
Speaker 2 (23:03):
It finished? So but issues with the audio at fifty
to fifty what was it? Thirty seven thousand dollars for
a fifty to fifty Like that's why bro too bad
we can't buy tickets for that.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
I would have bought tickets for the next game.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
Uh, but that little technical issue getting both audio feeds.
One wasn't more dominant than the other, so you had
to listen to two guys talk over each other, and.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
That's not ideal.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
And then this may be out of Flow Hockey's control.
We're not one hundred percent sure, but at least with
the Branford highlights, it seemed like it was fuzzy and
a little blurry. And again, whether that's a Rogers issue,
whether that's a Flow Hockey issue, we don't know. It
could be Rodgers and Flow's got nothing to do with it,
(23:53):
but you know, and then in Brampton, I think there
were issues throughout the entire first period, and again that
could be a Brampton issue. It might not be a
Full Hockey issue. We're not one hundred percent sure, but
I think the main one for me was that combining
audio out east, where it's like, eh, you know, it's
nice to have the option, but if you're gonna hear
both at the same time, that's not ideal. And you know,
(24:14):
you'd rather just at least have one where it's clear
you're not trying to fight over somebody else than than
to have the option for two.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
I don't know. Again, maybe I'm a grumpy old guy
that complains what even though I'm twenty seven years old. Well,
you want the best product, right, and is that the best?
Is that the best possible product you can consume? No,
so I think I agree with you on that, like
you want it, you want to be right. That's one thing, right.
I was excited for the broadcast to have the luxury.
Obviously that's not the case and we knew that. But
(24:42):
with the cue, Yeah, that's one thing that you really,
you really hope gets fixed. I know the AHL it
used to be you click on it and there was
none of that. So it'll be interesting to see something
to watch for for anyone from the queue watching or
anyone that watches the queue here in Ontario. It'd be
interesting to see, uh, how that comes about. I'm sure
that's something though that the engineers at Flow Hockey will
(25:03):
be on right away and production in house for sure,
whatever they can do in there, I'm sure they'll be
on that right away.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Yeah, it's weak one, you know, it's it's yeah, exactly
exactly better better happened now than in the playoffs. And hey,
we have to a conference final and you have to
fight with audio. Yeah that's not ideal.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
So you're right. Better it happens now.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Yeah, no, one hundred percent. I just want to and
I just want to mention this too. I know it's
we mentioned flow hockey and it's a new thing. I
just want to mention the video review. Obviously Peterborough the
other night in the first game, no video review in house.
But I want to mention the arena staff who had
to scramble to put up the new video review systems
in arenas. Congratulations to you guys. That was no easy feat.
You get the I know, for instance, on the Branford standpoint,
(25:50):
you get the poks delivered to you of cameras and
it's like here you go install it where we tell
you to, and it's all up to the engineers in
the building and people to do that or the electricians,
I mean to do that.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
So that was that's really cool that.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
They were able to accomplish that in most arenas because
that was hard to do it last minute like that.
So congratch the arena staff around the Ncherio Hockey League
to be able to get those out as well. That
kind of goes hand to hand with flow hockey with
the video stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
Oh yeah yeah yeah, so no that that's hard. Like
I know, my big one buddy I played ball with
that does it in Branford and he makes it look easy.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
But it's not that easy. So yeah yeah, but.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Yeah, I mean week one full hockey where we'll be okay,
we'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (26:35):
It's no baker, no big deal, all right.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
Also announced on Monday players of the Week honors around
the Ontario Hockey League. We're gonna start with the player
of the week from the winsor spit Fires. It's Cole Davis.
Two games for him, he scored four times. He had
two assists for six points total. He was a plus
six as well. The Spitfires with a pair of victories.
They defeated the Sarnia Sting in very large fashion eight
(27:03):
to one was the final score in that one on
on their opening game of the season, and then they
defeated the London Knights four to one on Saturday despite
a lengthy glass delay, Spitfires Mans getting a little rowdy
behind the London bench. Dale Hunter got an unwanted glass shower,
but cold Davis, Yeah, hell of a weekend. Six points
(27:25):
in two games to kick off your season.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
Yeah, that'll play. That'll earn you a spot in the
lineup next week hundred percent. You know, Cole Davis. I
was thinking if we recorded before this is announced or whatever,
I was thinking, Cold Davis needs a shout out. A
plus six and two games. Six points in a two
games is incredible. That's hard to do. You gotta like
talk about a dream start to the year. I mean
(27:48):
the short handed capabilities too that the showcased with leading
up to the glass shower in Windsor on his goal.
I mean the speed. Do you see the improvement in
his game. I think he's an underrated part of this
Winsord team. I think his role is gonna be intriguing
to watch for this Winsord team and see what Greg
Walters does with Cold David. He's almost like a Swiss
army knife, you know, in that lineup. He's good anywhere.
(28:10):
So I'm excited to see what Davis can do in
that top pairing for them up front and Windsor. But uh,
and I'm also glad dal Hunter's Okay, that looked like
a scary scene. Oh my god. Like I don't think
it's the first time he probably got a few glass
showers when he played. But yeah, got he's okay. Thank
god he's okay. The all time winning his coach goes
down like that. You don't want to see that, So
(28:32):
thank god he's okay. Man probably got a few of them.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
Those when he is a player.
Speaker 2 (28:36):
Yeah, well, Man, I talk about incidents happening at at
the WFCU Center. I still remember this was either like
with it probably within the first two three years. It
might have even been the first season at the WFCU
Center where the visiting team had left the door open
where they go to the locker room or where they
(28:57):
come out of the locker room. Once to know it,
the one time it's left open, a puck goes flying
through that door and catches a fan in the eye.
And I mean, I can't confirm what the result of
that was. I heard some things that I'm I'm not
going to share on here, but whenever when I saw that,
I'm like, geez, thatt reminds me a lot of when
(29:18):
a puck went flying through the doors and what made
them put a sign that said door must stay closed
at all times during play. So yeah, that's a little
scary nice to see, you know, Dale Hunter rebound from that.
Unfortunately his team couldn't get the dub. But as per usual,
the London Nights without a lot of talent early on
(29:40):
in the season. So that'll be part of Overreaction Tuesday
to wrap up the show, so make sure you stick
around for that. Moving on to Goaltender of the Week.
And it's like we've seen this before, Colin a Kitchen
or Ranger winning goalie of the week. How many times
did we see that last year Jackson?
Speaker 4 (29:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Uh, but at Jason Shabel this year with Jackson partians
obviously aging out, So so Shable gets it done. And
you know, his team goes down three nothing to the
Brantford Bulldogs and then a fourth one couldn't go in
or else Kitchen is not winning that game. Fourth one
couldn't have gone in, and and Shable shut the door
after three and he allowed his team to albeit didn't
(30:22):
take till the It took till the third period, but
the Kitchen Rangers got their legs under them. They they
found a way to get one pass Corovic per Korovic sorry,
and then they found their way back. They forced overtime
and then they won it four to three in the
extra frame. So so Shable two and zero on the weekend,
goals against average just under two at one point nine
(30:43):
to nine, that save percentage at nine thirty eight, and
calling again, you were in the building for that game
against the Bulldogs, what did you see from Shable in that.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
One fresh period. You know, he did make a couple
of staves keep them in the game. But I kind
of thought, you know, like he dialed in when he
had to be sharp. You know, he had to be
sharp after being down three, Like like you mentioned, you
can't get down four, you get down for It's a
different and it's a different story. And I think that
with Shobble with the capabilities here though, he just dialed
it in. Sometimes you're gonna start off a game and
(31:12):
you're not gonna feel good, then all of a sudden
you're gonna find it right. You gotta settle in, and
I think you do have to settle in the situation
like that. It's the first time the lights are on,
you got the extra spotlights on, you got the introduction,
it's the opening night, you got the ad advertisements on
the boards.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
You know, it's opening night.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
And maybe it was a little faster him at the start,
and then once he settled in, I mean he was great.
He was perfect after he settled in, and I thought
that he's a big goaltender who's smooth. He doesn't overmove,
you know, he's like he's technically sound, he doesn't over
commit to things. He he looked very smooth on Friday
night and obviously going to Saturday too, getting the start
the next night, just really carry on where he left
(31:47):
off from the night before, which is kind of a
good thing for goaltender, right to go off and get
that next night as well. Now as you get some
confidence early, and that's huge for them in shabble.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Yeah, especially because it was a divisional matchup the next
night against erie Otters, so so that big time. That's
even bigger. For sure'll take.
Speaker 4 (32:06):
A division win in September as much as you'll take
it in March. They're big.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
They're big looking back at it, especially for Kitchener this
year as there sits on the top spot.
Speaker 4 (32:15):
In the in the Midwest.
Speaker 3 (32:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
Rookie of the Week in the Ontario Hockey League it's
Thomas Vandenburgh. One game for him, three goals in an assist.
Welcome to your spot for weekend number two young man
plus three for for Thomas Vandenburg, the Ottawa sixty Seven's
took care of business. I guess it is the best
way to put it in kitchen or kitchener in Kingston
(32:41):
close enough. I guess his OHL debut Friday night in Kingston.
That's usually a big game when the sixty sevens are
in Kingston or the Front and Necks go to Ottawa. Right,
It's it's one of those rivalries out east, much like
Peterborough and Oshawa, where.
Speaker 4 (32:56):
These teams don't necessarily like.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
Each other very much.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Oh, that's especially on the road for him too. Right,
that's a six to two win for the sixty seven's
on the road in Kingston. And to have a performance
like that for Vandenberg against your biggest rival in the league,
I mean, welcome to the OHL. You're a fan favorite
already because you did that to the Kingston Front Next.
It's big obviously no matter what team it's against. But
for sixty sevens fans against Kings and Front act feels
(33:23):
a little bit better.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
Yeah, and he already had a lot of intrigue on him. Right,
fifth round pick makes a team twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
I mean.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
You're kind of you know, there's a lot of intrigue
to him. How he makes the team this year, young
player in the league, first year. Obviously, having your first
game like that's huge. Being able to come up and
perform like that is massive for your confidence. I think
that's all you're asking for earlier, as if you're a
player early on in the year, you just want to
feel good right now?
Speaker 4 (33:49):
Do you feel good?
Speaker 3 (33:49):
And you performed and having a performance like that definitely
makes you feel good and hope it'll be fun to
see what his confidence level is throughout the stretch here,
like it'll be fun to see what the next games like.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
Excited to go to the rank.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
Great when you're successful, So personal success leads to always
leaves leads to team success. So it'll be exciting to
see what Ottawa can do with Vandenburg because he's definitely
looked really good for them so far for Ottawa.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
Yeah, and then this one, this is a new one,
the Ohl Prospect of the week.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
I love this. I love this.
Speaker 4 (34:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
From the g O j hl Amarra Sugar Kings. It's
Brendan Gerber. Four games.
Speaker 3 (34:28):
Listen to this.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
Stat line not bad name, eh, pretty good? Yeah, I'll
name team gotta be Brendan Gerber in four games, scored
three goals. Yeah, that's pretty good. Eight assists, so eleven
points in four games for the Elmira Sugar Kings. You
could easily put them in the All Jersey contest as well.
I've always loved the Sugar Kings uniform. But he's Prospect
(34:51):
of the week and that looks like another talented London
Night to be come the future.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
That's, like I said, that's one heck of a week.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
It's it's gonna be tough to match that, but uh three,
eight and eleven it's pretty damn good.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (35:08):
You know, Gerber's always found a way to get points,
especially back when he's playing Waterloo with Braddy Martin in
their draft years. I mean, Gerber is one of those guys.
Everywhere he goes he gets points. I'm I'm honestly surprised
that he wasn't a guy that made the Knights or
had a longer look with the Knights. He's got one
of the guys up because I would think so. He
always gets points. Every year you look at him, you
(35:28):
hear his name, he gets points. Last year you got
called up for the Knights a little bit. You saw
him in Omaira, you saw him in the g O
last year. Get a few points wherever he is.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Point one hundred and fifteen points in ninety three career
games in Junior B.
Speaker 4 (35:42):
Yeah, like he always gets points.
Speaker 3 (35:44):
I don't know why this guy hasn't gotten a bigger
shot at the next level at the OHL.
Speaker 4 (35:48):
He's deserving.
Speaker 3 (35:49):
He's deserving so and I'm it's and it's obviously we
can't speak for general managers, but I wonder if London
gets calls on this guy.
Speaker 4 (35:57):
Mm hmm, eighteen still got term. Yeah, you would think though,
right like eighteen.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
It's kind of that role where when you're you gonna
get your chance, you deserve an opportunity. At eighteen, you
put up all the numbers in the g O. He
deserves a chance to play in the O.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
When and where? You know? Is it in London? That's
what we're gonna That's what we're gonna find out, because
I'm sure they get a lot of calls.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
Yeah, Again, maybe it's just that guy that they want
to wait an extra year and have him for his
last two eligible years in the OHL for when he's paid. Yeah,
could be could be who knows, but I mean, if
you're putting up those numbers, deserve it. Sure people are
gonna notice. People are gonna want to say, hey, see
a part of your plans or can we make him
part of our plans? So I love this the part
(36:42):
of the partnership with the GOJHL to have prospect of
the week. I'm I'm pumped for this. This is gonna
be fun to see this. So, uh, let's get to
some arenas before we hit the brake. We're already thirty
five minutes in sore Alaudatorium.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
Yeah. Yeah, we're a hardworking show.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
I think we're gonna I think that's gonna be the
title of this episode, the hard work, dynamic, hardworking, the dynamic,
hardworking folks of the OHL and said, that's too long.
Speaker 3 (37:12):
We'll figure it out later.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
But uh uh.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium, the renovation that they did, calling
you you got to see it on opening night. There
was a media walk through that that took place as
well prior to the season getting underway, too. Uh, just
your thoughts on it, calling not you said, it's not
the most ideal spot for a media room. However, the
(37:38):
lack of good location is made up for by the
design and by all the elements of that media room.
Speaker 4 (37:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
For I know you guys, I know, reach yourself and
Brandon you as you know this. But I was bugging
Firewell for not doing a video yet of the media room.
Uh yeah, that's a pretty bad Eh. That's it. Uh,
come on, Mike, gotta be better here. Let's go.
Speaker 4 (38:01):
Yeah one, no.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
Game to focus on or any Yeah, okay, we'll get
my past.
Speaker 4 (38:10):
Yeah, no, it's all.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
It's always great to see Farwell and uh obviously Josh
Brown as well. Those guys are great. They get packed
on us. It's always great to talk to those guys.
Really enjoy it. Ultimate professionals. But they're lucky to have
these digs. This new media room. Boys, I'm telling you
you want so. It's in a weird spot, Reese, I've
already explained it to you off here, but Brandon and
(38:33):
I know exactly where it is as soon as you
described that. Go, yep, that's where I always used to
walk up. You'd get the peanut carts or the corn
nut cart or whatever. That Yep, yep, that wall there.
I think it was in a washroom before or something
like the wall. God, I don't know, I have no
idea what it used to be before.
Speaker 4 (38:50):
That's gonna be a restaurant.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
It's under construction currently still, but that's gonna be a restaurant.
When you come up the stairs, that's gonna be a restaurant.
And then tucked in to the right behind in the
little corner is the media room, the Don Camera media
room that is, and we have to mention Don Cameron,
the great Don Cameron. I know you have a ton
of stories to mention about Don Cameron, the impact you
had on yourself and Kitchener're gonna.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
We're gonna tell one after you're done. We're gonna go
through one after we're done.
Speaker 4 (39:18):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
So it's a track obviously from the press Box, sponsored
by Downtown Waterloo Location press Box. And that walk it's
gonna it's a long walk for some, it's a long
walk for some media. Bring your water bottles and grab
an extra one on the way out. It's a sweazing
bockets of telling us that you needed oxygen after walking there.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
No, I was okay, I was all right, okay, But
it's a great spot.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
You go in there and right away you see on
the wall above the food. You see on the wall
every single logos in like a three D silver image
of every logo in the every team's logo, and I
thought that was incredible right away. And then on the
opposite wall, the Don Cameron exhibits are pretty neat, Like
(40:07):
the things about the Rangers and Don Cameron's impact, that's
incredible to actually, I remember we talked about that before that.
You know, we saw the wall in the previous media room,
but it's cool to actually have more things on Don Cameron. Ye,
when you go to Kitchener, you see the presence and
that's cool. And that's just when you walk into the
media room. The media room for those in the media
is not as big as the old one. It's pretty small,
(40:29):
So get there early, but really get a set up
for post games. I don't think coaches are gonna like that,
especially visiting coaches.
Speaker 4 (40:37):
Ree says, you know.
Speaker 3 (40:38):
That track's gonna be a long walk from the visiting
booth or from the visit Well, I guess it's probably halfway,
but it's gonna be a lot hard for the visiting
team in Kitchener, pitcher Dale Hunter walking through the concourse
right after a game to get to the press conference
in the conference final. That might be interesting to see
in Kitchener, but that's kind of what it's gonna be.
I would imagine security. Yeah, there's gonna be a lot
(41:00):
of security, especially when everyone's going down the stairs. You
gotta gotta go everybody. It's gonna be tough. But I
assume that's where the post games are gonna be. They
have the studio lights up. It'd be a great spot
to record a podcast. I mean, they got the couches there,
they got the studio lights. I mean, that's a dream.
I was bugging the Branford guys for us in Branford
to get a pot, like to get like a couches
like that, record the podcast in for the Audio Network
(41:23):
in the new arena in Branford, because that's they got
to take notes from that.
Speaker 4 (41:27):
But really really cool spot.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
And my felony thing was I was gonna take the
Bulldogs logo. I I want it that ever comes for sale,
I want it that. I gotta wait a long long time,
but I want that soul bad. If they they did
an incredible job. I like when I like when teams
do things like this and they take every single small
(41:51):
detail into account. That's that's how you get a perfect project.
I never got perfect projects in school, so I'm probably
the wrong guy to go.
Speaker 4 (41:58):
To to how to build a media room. But whoever they, whoever.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
Designed the media room did an incredible job. Shout out
to those guys. They did good. I love it. It's small,
and make sure your laptops are charged before you go
in there. It's a hard place to find an outlet
right now, so make sure it's charged. Brandon, it's an
update for you when Niagara goes there, make sure it's
Make sure your laptop's charged before going into the media room,
(42:23):
and be ready to get the walk because but when
once you get there, it's worth it. It's incredible. They
did a really good job there.
Speaker 2 (42:33):
Yeah, so every time we bring up Don Cameron this year,
I should give a story because I feel like we
got it. So, yeah, it doesn't directly involve Don Cameron
this one. But when I used to live in Cambridge
at my grandparents' house, just for that brief time, our name,
our neighbor had.
Speaker 3 (42:49):
Season tickets to the Kitchen Rangers.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
And this was back before they had might have been
after too. Either way, he would always buy the ticket
like his season tickets were always the last row in
the arena. So I don't know our ohl Barnes considered
to have nosebleed seats. Maybe London, that's maybe the one
(43:13):
end in windsor the one end in Peterborough. But other
than that, there's not really nosebleed seats, I guess, so
again just the last row in the arena. And again
this is I think it's pre n post edition with
the blue section of the seats. So he would always
buy his seats last row right in front of the
radio booth where Don Cameron would do the broadcast. And
(43:34):
I'm sure people have seen this around a bunch of
arenas everywhere. But he would bring his mini radio along
with headphones and listen to Don Cameron while while he
was at the arena getting the whole spectacle, the smell
of the the nuts, walking in the you know, the
(43:55):
history behind the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. But he would have
On Cameron calling the game while he was watching it
in the arena.
Speaker 3 (44:02):
And we were.
Speaker 2 (44:03):
Always the last ones to leave because we could not
leave until the postgame show was over and Don Cameron
had signed off for the night.
Speaker 3 (44:12):
That's awesome.
Speaker 2 (44:13):
I mean, I mean and again, at that point, I'm
a I'm a stupid kid. I had, you know, I
didn't have a ton of interest to uh, to do
anything in media or broadcasting. I think at that age
I wanted to drive trains. I still kind of do,
because they're awesome. Thomas and tank engine kid. Right here
(44:34):
I went, I got, I got, oh yeah, yeah, I
love that. Oh yeah, big bins of Thomas stuff. They're like,
I don't know, I don't want to lift my laptop up,
but they're pretty big. The old wood ones, they're not
the crappy metal ones they got now, so the old
wood oh yeah, you need the new ones.
Speaker 4 (44:56):
Your brutal kids aren't experiencing the joy that we did. No.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
Plus, the TV show sucks. It's all cartoony and aated,
like the old who needs the mouse to move?
Speaker 4 (45:08):
Like come on?
Speaker 2 (45:09):
But yeah but yeah, so so, like I said, I
had no interest to do anything in media or TV
or radio or whatever, but that like I didn't appreciate
it at that point, but I right now, I kind
of wish I did not understanding who actually was talking
behind us and doing a postgame show analyzing a hockey game,
you know, being the voice of the Kitchener Rangers. So
(45:31):
that that's my Don Cameron story for today is we
were the lot and ushers tried to kick us out
a few times. Like there were a few times where
where my grandparents neighbors like, no, you just got five
minutes left in the postgame show, I'm finishing listening. So
that was pretty cool to see. But it had to
be the Don Cameron media Room had to be. We
(45:53):
had talked about it on the Dogcast on the Bulldogs
Audio Network on this week's show that Don Cameron Media Award.
We're gonna sign the petition whenever that that comes up,
so if if it ever comes up, we're we're all
for it. So yeah, shout out to to Don Cameron
because that's I've got a few of them. I've got
(46:13):
a few stories and as every time he comes up,
I'm gonna tell one.
Speaker 3 (46:16):
So we'll we'll get that going.
Speaker 2 (46:18):
But switching gears to another historic building, the Peterborough Memorial.
Speaker 3 (46:22):
Center, not up to par and.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
It sounds like teams are knocking at the door to
come into the Ontario Hockey League. Not to say Peterborough
is gonna lose a franchise, but they need a new barn.
You know, the Peterborough Memorial Center's got a ton of history.
There's a lot that's happened in the history of the
OHL there. But square boards can't happen that They've got
(46:52):
to go.
Speaker 4 (46:53):
It's like radio booth. Yeah, the benches on the.
Speaker 2 (46:57):
Opposite side gotta go, uh Sudbury. If you're listening, the
visiting radio booth is terrible. You could have put it
in a worse spot. It is so bad. You're you're
you're in the blue line of the Petez zone twice.
You have to lean over the glass and try to
avoid fans to see the far end of the rink.
(47:20):
And then like media room, one of the nicest media rooms,
I will say, in the media rooms and press boxes
in the OHL.
Speaker 4 (47:26):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (47:27):
But it's at one end of the rink. They've they've
got a great set up there. The chairs are comfortable.
It's it's it is a decent view. But yeah, it's
it's twenty twenty five. You know, it's time to upgrade
the scoreboard. Obviously was a nice addition for the Peterborough
Pets to upgrade that, but I I think it's time.
(47:49):
I think it's time for a new barn.
Speaker 3 (47:53):
Yeah, yeah, you know, it's it's it's sad to see
you in this in certain occasions just because the PiZZ organization,
the p MC or so, it's iconic, right, it's one
of the most iconic organizations across in the h l YEA.
Speaker 4 (48:07):
But yeah, every every arena has.
Speaker 3 (48:09):
A shelf life, right, every everything comes and goes, and
hopefully for the pizza they figure out the best option
for them. But Peterborough is gonna be the piece forever. Yeah,
it's it's a staple. So I'm more I'm really excited though,
to see what can happen in Peterborough with a new
arena and things like that to their to the city
(48:32):
of Peterborough because they deserve it too. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Speaker 4 (48:37):
Where do you want to skip the break? Yeah, no,
I'm gonna go. We don't like, yeah, we got yeah,
we're flowing. We're flowing. We're ditioning it off d T
D or like stretch pass and breakaways.
Speaker 3 (48:51):
Hard.
Speaker 4 (48:52):
It's hard. It's a dynamic week. It's a dynamic show.
It's been great.
Speaker 3 (48:58):
Hard working no title of the title title of the episode.
Speaker 4 (49:04):
Dynamically hard working.
Speaker 3 (49:07):
There you.
Speaker 2 (49:10):
David Yep so you can see the final three topics
we've got there for you. Kitchener or Gwelf for the
Memorial Cup next season, the own sound attack.
Speaker 3 (49:20):
They have a goalie issue.
Speaker 2 (49:22):
They've got a lot of talented netminders, so we'll discuss
that afterwards, and then overreaction Tuesday. We're not going to
spend a lot of time on it because it is
week one, well going into week two of the ohl season.
Why are we overreacting some loose.
Speaker 3 (49:40):
Or one game. Yeah, just just to say, but.
Speaker 4 (49:45):
Let's let's start with Kitchener or Gwelf.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
Colin.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
We've already kind of talked about the Kitchen Memorial Auditorium
a little bit, so we're not gonna spend a ton
of time there, but the history there you mentioned they're
gonna put in a restaurant. I feel like all team
have to find some way to see if they can
integrate some sort of restaurant, you know, whether it's physically
in the arena complex. Uh. Branford has tried to do
(50:09):
that with the with the ringside lounge.
Speaker 3 (50:13):
Barry.
Speaker 2 (50:14):
You've got the full restaurant that I'm pretty sure is
open in the summer too.
Speaker 4 (50:18):
I could be wrong.
Speaker 3 (50:19):
Don't quote me on that, but it's got an outside
entrance that it can be if it isn't. I think
I'm right in saying that it is open all year round.
But but that's cool to see that.
Speaker 2 (50:32):
You know, the the Guelf Storm, for for sure, they've
got that bar I think. I think, if I'm not mistaken,
Sarnia's got one, although you might have to have a
ticket for the game for that restaurant. I again, don't
quote me on that, but then or you can't walk through. Yeah, yeah,
that's tough.
Speaker 3 (50:54):
Media past.
Speaker 2 (50:55):
Colin Ward's fired up. Yeah, oh yeah, but but yeah,
I mean that's cool. And then yeah, the Guelf Storm,
I mean, probably one of the best located press boxes
of all time. It doesn't get any better than that.
The vantage point you've got there, Dylan baker Man, you
walked into gold Mine in that press box, Like, my goodness,
I love that spot.
Speaker 3 (51:16):
Yeah, but you know, it.
Speaker 2 (51:18):
Kind of has the same smell as as Kitchener does
with the with the with the roasted or toasted nuts
and and you know that old school smell, but a
new barn love the gold Horn. They added the ribbon
around the around the upper level sharp, stormy dances in
the middle of the third period. Although I miss Cotton
(51:38):
Eye Joe. I wish they'd bring that back. Apparently, what's
the responsive? I don't know why, but someone educate me.
But I don't know what the new song is. I
can't remember.
Speaker 4 (51:51):
I know, I forget her.
Speaker 3 (51:52):
It's it's like two three years old now, yeah, there
once a year, yeah, and it was.
Speaker 2 (52:01):
It's been night one a couple of times to no, no,
not what I went. We were there for pre season,
never mind, but.
Speaker 4 (52:06):
Three years ago one, I think three years ago now yeah.
Speaker 2 (52:12):
Yeah, Morrison, yeah, uh so, I don't know if asking
you what's the better, which one is a better option?
But who's gonna get it?
Speaker 3 (52:23):
Wardy?
Speaker 4 (52:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (52:24):
Well what what team has the edge? I guess or
what bombs?
Speaker 4 (52:29):
I think without with Undoubtedly I think Kitchener has the
edge for sure. And it's it's fitting that these two,
these two cities, for the city aspect of it to
have to be able to square off just makes sense
just because it's whatcher involved do.
Speaker 3 (52:44):
That's just how it goes there, So it makes sense
for those two. I'm definitely leaning toward Kitchener. I think
Kitchener for sure, has the has the best odds to
get it. I mean, look at the amount of money
they put into their renovation. I mean the odd what
everything stands for. The one thing is about GWELF. They've
also renovated their arena. I'm just interested to see what
(53:06):
GWELF does with the mall. I like the area that
the arena's in is great. A lot of parking and
GWELF a lot of parking in the office.
Speaker 2 (53:14):
The one we had one of the highlights of the show.
I yelled at another driver while we were pulling into
the parking garage because.
Speaker 3 (53:26):
Man, that's one of the all time.
Speaker 4 (53:28):
Highlights that could never be played or said on here.
But oh yeah, man, I just think that.
Speaker 3 (53:37):
With what the what GWELF is, it's a great spot.
They have a lot of restaurants outside toward the downtown
part obviously in the.
Speaker 4 (53:43):
Core, but in that mall, I wish there was more there.
Speaker 3 (53:48):
I wish it was more like yeah, more like I
don't know, you have more like a market, you know,
like like look at London. Look at the market across
the road from London. Can you imagine like maybe not
that busy, but if they had like a really cool
like sports bar that's out there, you know, that would
be cool to have to add that spot. It just
needs something in the mall. I don't know, like it
(54:09):
could just be me nitpicking, but being around I love
the arena, Like I said, it's one of the best
spots to watch a game. But I don't know, I
just think that they I just think the mall itself
could use something. I don't know if the arena needs
a bigger renovation than the mall itself that the arena's
locations at Yeah, yeah, you know what just and maybe
(54:31):
that was just because of the days we were there,
but yeah, true, nothing going on, Like it was quiet,
fairly empty, you know.
Speaker 4 (54:40):
I was looking to get a coffee at the shop
there that was closed.
Speaker 2 (54:44):
There might be one restaurant in there, but even that,
it didn't seem like there was a ton going on,
you know, like maybe a storm promotion or something like
wings in a pint for fifteen bucks or whatever it is,
or where your storm here and get a free appetizer
with the purchase of twenty dollars or something. I don't know,
(55:05):
something like that. I'm not even remotely capable of running
a restaurant, but I don't know, something like that, like
maybe a facelift, I guess is the best way to
put it. It's it's it's got an old school style
feel to it. But just every time we've been there,
it's just it's it's been a little depressing. There's not
much going on. There's nobody in there. You don't have
(55:26):
really any events going on before the Storm game. So yeah,
I think I think if they added something like that,
if they made that a little bit more lively, I
don't know if that's the right word, but if they yeah,
more of a yeah, if they had more stuff going on,
that might make a difference.
Speaker 4 (55:43):
I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (55:44):
I think Kitchener is gonna get it as well. The
only issue is there is nothing around the odd that
got the best parting far, not even close.
Speaker 3 (55:53):
The shuttles.
Speaker 2 (55:53):
I mean, I love taking the shuttle from Moosewnouski's at
Sports to the Rangers game.
Speaker 3 (55:58):
That was a time.
Speaker 2 (56:00):
Yeah, the shuttles are gonna have to be a thing. Yeah,
where's where's the sleeping centers? Right in the middle of everything.
You know, you've got downtown right there, So there's a
ton of possibilities right downtown, and it's a good downtown also, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I hated going there for baseball, but too knew it
was gonna be a I hate Hastings Stadium with a passion. Yeah,
(56:23):
we're the deepest part of the fields, like right center,
man right, yeah, and left field one of the fields
one where we installed Yeah, yeah, it's an all wood fence.
Literally would it's hard if you run into it. We're
gonna install a bullpen phone, but not connect them. That
makes sense, from the dugout to the bullpen. Let's just
(56:44):
have the phones in the boxes, but not actually a connection.
I hate that park with a passion. I'm sure people
can tell. But I love the sleeping Center. I love
that on your so they could easily get it. They've
got a lower capacity. That shouldn't make that big of
a difference. Yeah, you're gonna lose out on I don't
know what the difference is. Three thousand fans might be
the difference the storm, but yeah, yeah, exactly like Wells downtown,
(57:09):
where's Kitchener. Yeah, you might have to travel a bit to.
Speaker 3 (57:12):
To go somewhere, or go out before or after, whatever
the case might be.
Speaker 2 (57:17):
So I'd say that's an advantage. Guelf Right in the
middle of the town, downtown.
Speaker 4 (57:22):
That community. Yeah for sure does.
Speaker 3 (57:28):
All right. Next up, we're gonna stay in the Midwest Division,
Big miss Midwest Day. Holy crap.
Speaker 2 (57:34):
Yeah, the thought the own sound attack goalie controversy, is
that a thing? I feel like it isn't is such
a thing. But you've got Tristan or Trenton Bennett, You've
got Matthew Kaprowski, and you've got Carter George. Now, apologies
to the Bennett family for not mentioning him last week
(57:56):
when we had this discussion, originally because he got sent
back or released, I guess from his uh, from his
try out with with Saint Louis. So he's coming back
to the own sound attack. Carter George still with the
La Kings. Expect them to be there a little bit longer.
Speaker 1 (58:12):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (58:12):
But those are three guys that are really good.
Speaker 2 (58:17):
You've got a couple of sixes and then you've got
an O seven in Kapowski six' eight Is bennett six
Three kapowski And george is six to.
Speaker 4 (58:26):
Two, yeah what do you? Do what do you? Do?
Speaker 3 (58:31):
Well two are gonna, stay one's going they gotta make
a move and that will that will only happen if
and When george comes. Back but what do they? Do
like what what on earth do they? Do like do
you do you Trade kapowski? Out and then do you
Ride george And? Bennett like what do you do with?
Speaker 2 (58:50):
It?
Speaker 4 (58:50):
Right like it's, like, Yeah george is a.
Speaker 3 (58:52):
Franchise so you see on your screen right now on, YouTube,
Like Carter george is a franchise And i'll own.
Speaker 4 (58:57):
Sound he's the face of their, team he's their.
Speaker 3 (58:59):
Leader, Honestly i'm not gonna say a goalie being, captain
but if a goalie was ever going to be named
a captain of a, franchise it would Be Carter, George, like,
yeah what do you?
Speaker 4 (59:09):
Do do you?
Speaker 3 (59:10):
Like they have value on all three. Goaltenders all three
goaltenders have. Value they're All they're all could be. Starters
they all have they gotta. Make they'll have to make
a move if and When Carter george comes. Back Carter
george looked great On Sunday night FOR. La whatever they
plan to do is gonna be interesting because they've shown
(59:31):
they've showcased their capabilities in The Enterio Hockey. League, Obviously
kapowski's on your screen right now for those on.
Speaker 4 (59:38):
YouTube i mean With.
Speaker 3 (59:39):
KAPOWSKI i, mean it's numbers maybe don't look great from
the last couple of, years but he showcased that he can.
Play he looked good in The prospects. Game he's shown
what he's capable of.
Speaker 2 (59:50):
Doing, Yeah AND i mean we talked about how important
it was for For shable to keep the game at
three nothing against The. Bulldogs what About bennett against The
London knights to keep it to nothing allow his team
to come back and win in.
Speaker 3 (01:00:04):
Overtime that's. Huge It's it's.
Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
One thing to do it in front of your home
crowd at The Kitchener Memorial. Auditorium it's another thing to
do it on the road At Canada Life place when
they raised The Memorial cup banner to the rafters and
you come there and steal a couple of points against
The London. Knights Now knights got. On it was an overtime,
game but you kept at it to nothing and allowed
(01:00:28):
your team to come back and win that. Game you
gave your team a chance to win And Trenton bennett
had one hell of a night On.
Speaker 3 (01:00:37):
Friday, yeah he.
Speaker 4 (01:00:38):
DID i, mean either's.
Speaker 3 (01:00:39):
Good it's one of those things as you mentioned you
guy dial it in when you have to and he
was great when he had to be and probably if
he plays another game and on the, weekend he probably
he probably Gets goalie of the week for his impact
he had Growing. Sound, yeah so, YEAH i just think, that,
yeah they to be in the general manager's office And Owen,
(01:00:59):
sound the possibilities of what you do there is, Tough
like it's the. Heart that's the hardest situation right now
in THE hl What Owen sound does with their, goaltending
because they have a lot of pieces there and this
is honestly a move that where let's say they Keep
george If george gets sent back to if he gets sent,
(01:01:20):
back if they keep him and move one of the other,
two you might be able to get a good piece
for it, too to be able to confidently say you'd
have a chance With, Carter george and Net, yeah and
maybe a forward who can be in your top six
to possibly battle for home. Ice so it's exciting to
see the challenges In Owen. Sound but if you make good,
(01:01:43):
decisions this could be a huge thing For Owen. Sound.
Speaker 2 (01:01:48):
Yeah and, well and we had the conversation earlier on
today that if It's, kaprowski the one that's the odd
man out and you look to move, him it's a
little more. VALUE i, Mean Carter george, valuable the most
valuable goaltender on.
Speaker 3 (01:02:02):
The trade block this.
Speaker 2 (01:02:03):
Year but you, know with With, kapowski at least you've
got an extra year out of him in The Ontario
Hockey league with him being AN o Seven bennett and
uh And GEORGE r. Sixes so that's another thing you.
Weigh you, know do you go for A i don't
know if bigger. Package carter is gonna get a pretty
good package back To owen sound but we got to
(01:02:26):
stop saying that that was starting to.
Speaker 3 (01:02:28):
Sound a little. Bad but oh, man we're going off
the rails.
Speaker 2 (01:02:36):
Here but Uh, no Like, Carter george is is going
to be AN nhl goaltender within the next four or five.
Years there's no question about. That kapowski's got that extra
year that he could play in The Ontario Hockey. League
Trenton bennett six.
Speaker 4 (01:02:50):
eight.
Speaker 2 (01:02:52):
It's hard to find that, a goaltender, you know a
drafted guy who would take him By the devils this
past draft in the in the.
Speaker 4 (01:03:00):
Third round, you, know yeah it's it's kind of A.
Speaker 6 (01:03:06):
In.
Speaker 4 (01:03:06):
Owen sound.
Speaker 2 (01:03:07):
You're rich you're rich in the crease right now with
the three guys that. You have and and, you know
if somebody comes with the right package To to owen
Sound For, carter george, THEN yeah i think you. Do
it whether it's Whether, it's kaprowski, you Know, for george
it's more than likely a contender that's going to be
going for it. This year you think Of, the brantfords
(01:03:29):
although they've got, their goaltender so it's not going to.
Speaker 3 (01:03:31):
Be Them.
Speaker 2 (01:03:32):
LONDON knight's, i mean You've, got medvedev but for, whatever
reason they go out and find a veteran And allow
medvedev to be a backup for, another year or play fifty,
to fifty although if you're Waiting For, carter george you're
not probably playing fifty to fifty number. Two exactly so the.
Winsor spitfires costanzo had won heck of a year. Last
(01:03:53):
year he's gonna. Come back oh he's. Already back but,
you know whereas if It's a, kaprowski move is it
a team that goes for it? Next year and and
we talked about shabble With with kitchener and a good
start to. His, season yeah is that? Something there, you
Know if gwelf gets The mem cup or they start
(01:04:14):
loading up for next year to just go for a
championship and try and get there by WINNING an. Ohl
Title is kaprowski a guy for? FOR them i mean
they've They've got. Ellsworth there joevenofsky is also an option
for The, Gwelf storms so you have to make. That
decision it's be a summary, decision too Probably for gwelf.
Speaker 3 (01:04:32):
More, likely yep.
Speaker 2 (01:04:34):
ABSOLUTELY so I mean i must be nice to be
on sound with LUs. Right now and, you know, and
again goaltending is just part, of it don't get.
Speaker 4 (01:04:44):
Me wrong the rest of the team has.
Speaker 2 (01:04:45):
To perform the goalie can only give up one does
make a difference if you don't, score anything so they lose,
One nothing SO so I think i think there's something
to look. At there but but also too like it's
a you've Got THEIR like, I said owen sounds pretty
rich in the crease right now with the guys, they
have and they can do whatever. They want they can
hang on. All three i'm sure all three guys would
(01:05:08):
love to be, a Starter and i'm sure that's something
they may have had a conversation with The own sound
Management About owen sound, coaching staff about all goaltenders get to.
Speaker 3 (01:05:15):
That point so.
Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
Who, knows again we're lucky we don't have to make
that decision because, that's hard.
Speaker 3 (01:05:22):
That's hard what do?
Speaker 4 (01:05:23):
You do what do? You, do yeah so it's.
Speaker 3 (01:05:27):
A yeah, i mean as An own, sound fan you're.
Absolutely ecstatic but.
Speaker 2 (01:05:33):
So from that it's time to overreact a. Little bit the,
POWER rankings, i, mean yeah well we'll go. Over it
we'll include them in.
Speaker 3 (01:05:41):
This conversation why the?
Speaker 2 (01:05:42):
Heck not so the power rankings for this week In
The Ontario. Hockey League The brampton steelheads move up four
spots to. Number Sixteen peterboro peats up two spots, Number
Fifteen owen sound up two spots to. Number fourteen ashwood.
Drops one they. Are thirteenth flint up one. To Twelve
Gwelfh sue saganaw do. Not move three of four teams
(01:06:06):
that did, not move so, that's twelve eleven And Ten Guelph.
Sue saganaw kingston moves down one to, Number Eight north
bay up one to. Number seven bury that other team
that did. Not move they stay at. Number Six london
knights down one to. Number Five ice dogs up one to.
Number four bulldogs move down two to, number three possible.
Four points kitchener and winsor up. One spot they're now
(01:06:29):
one and two and that's part of. The Overreaction branford
bulldogs collect three out of, four points but because of,
that loss they drop a couple. Of Spots london knights
did not win on, opening weekend they drop. A spot
they're not. In Trouble It's. London knights they're not. In
trouble this is normal For The london. Nights organization early in.
The season they know that's part of. The job you
(01:06:51):
develop talent for the. Next level and when you get
into a spot where you're just PUMPING out nhl talent
might not be awesome for a couple of weeks to start,
the year but, that's, okay yep because we play sixty
eight games for. A reason the regular season goes until.
The spring who really cares how the first two. Weeks
go because if you're in first place and you start
(01:07:11):
the next season raising two, championship banners one IN, the
ohl one In The Canadian, hockey league nobody gives. A
crap how you Start so. London nights yeah they. Didn't
win they'll, be fine they will be. Absolutely, fine yeah IT'S.
Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
Heir i mean the power rankings are kind of irrelevant
until twenty. Games in it's it's one of those things
where when you look at, THE rankings i mean a team,
loses once, it's like well, You're fifth like you go
down to sixth like on some teams only, played once,
so yeah like how can you even market like how
can you even?
Speaker 4 (01:07:47):
Mark what?
Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
It? Is like some teams look bad, one night next
night they. LOOK great i mean they're still getting used to.
The system that was one of the big takeaways from
The week from, THE weekend i mean you see teams
that had really good camps.
Speaker 4 (01:07:58):
And it showed with their systems and where.
Speaker 3 (01:08:00):
They're at then you see some teams where you can
tell What system yeah echo in crickets. Sounds there but that,
was uh it's it's one of. Those things fan engagement
is what.
Speaker 4 (01:08:11):
It is oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:08:12):
Yeah YEAH but i would say the top two teams
are right wins. Your kitchener we're the top two teams,
this weekend without, a doubt and they deserve to.
Speaker 4 (01:08:20):
Be there the rest honestly from three. TO twenty i
mean it could, Be, anyone, like yeah it. Really Good
north bay looked good.
Speaker 3 (01:08:27):
This weekend niagara had a, big win bounce back Win
on sunday after dropping a top One on. Friday night
like there like there's a lot of games on there
where teams, look great teams, look okay and, you Know
like peterborough looked pretty Good on, thursday Night but saturday
they didn't.
Speaker 4 (01:08:43):
Look great it looked like they wanted to be IN a.
Speaker 3 (01:08:45):
Ufc fight so like it's it's so early yet for the,
power rankings, but yep it's definitely fun for.
Speaker 4 (01:08:53):
The fans it definitely there's gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
Be something not sleeping tonight and throughout the week until
next week's power rankings because they're not ranked or they're
not ranked where they want them to be in the.
Power rankings so it's always fun to see how people react.
To them it's good ON the ohl for doing it for, fan, engagement.
Speaker 4 (01:09:09):
Well and that's that's.
Speaker 2 (01:09:10):
The job that's the job of the, communications department that's
the job of the social media department is to engage
with fans Around The Ontario hockey league and and that's
What The power, rankings does so from, that standpoint you
completely understand why they, do it and you completely understand
Why The Canadian hockey league Does their top ten. As
well it's just to engage with, the fans get the
conversation going about this upcoming week of action and, you
(01:09:32):
know talk, about great great. Bounce Backs kingston Front and
acts looks terrible on, home ice but then they drip
fall down to Nothing, to oshua score the next five
and win five to Two in osha in their trademark
six o'clock Game. On, sunday so by, the way shout
Out To jimmy kilchrist in fine form to start. The
year listen to that one On on kingston's RADIO while
(01:09:52):
i was at Work. On sunday so shout Out to
jimmy g one of the best to ever. Do It
And Kingston front nacs got in the win column this
YEAR after i come from behind winn after falling down
to nothing To. The generals, so yeah that's that's overreaction week.
Number one we're gonna do this a couple more times
throughout the first couple of months of, the season so
sit back and.
Speaker 4 (01:10:13):
Enjoy it we're only.
Speaker 2 (01:10:14):
One week in wardy and we've already gotten fired up before.
Speaker 4 (01:10:17):
THE show i, mean.
Speaker 3 (01:10:19):
ALMOST huh i got a lot of feedback from my
from my aggressive, approach there my excitement level from a.
Speaker 4 (01:10:30):
Few listeners so thanks for turning. It in thanks for
checking in on. Me too. Appreciate that. I'm good that's
Just another that's just another.
