In this special extended end-of-month episode, Brandon Caputo & Christian Simmons analyze and recap the month of November 2025 for the Niagara IceDogs, which resulted in only two of a possible 18 points. What will the team learn from going through a stretch like this? What can they do to improve on? What can the coaching staff do to help get the ship back steered in the right direction? As well as other objective analysis that the team can use as takeaways and build off of going through the adversity of a winless month of play, which now has them sitting in the 8th and final playoff spot in the OHL's Eastern Conference.

our loyal audio listeners as well, and your favorite on
demand audio platform podcast Spotify, Apple Podcast and all these

(02:02):
other ones that I've never used before. But if you
guys use, God bless you. But we're on about nine
different audio platforms and other than Apple and Spotify, Christian,
I don't know if you've used any other one but me.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
I'm a YouTube music guy all the way, and I'm
gonna get some severe hate in the comments section for this,
but I pay for YouTube Premium.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
I know what a what a loser I am.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
But I don't have to listen to ads, and it
also comes with a great service in YouTube Music, so
I get all my podcasts there, and the Armchair GM
Sports Network podcasts are on YouTube Music because it is
a YouTube podcast, So maybe consider it, man.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
I love it.

Speaker 5 (02:43):
They have you know, like TikTok, like shorts or like Spotify.
I think has it too, where you can scroll through
like almost like your brain rot like Doom scrolling and
songs come up, so it's like TikTok but for music.
And you keep scrolling through and you find songs that
you like and you can add them to your library

(03:04):
or you can, you know, move to the next And
that's that's me.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
I'm a YouTube, YouTube music kind of guy.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
Well, when you get that royalty check in the mail
from YouTube for that ad you just gave them, let
me know.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
And yeah, right, anyway, YouTube sponsor us, please.

Speaker 6 (03:21):
We're getting there. We're getting there.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
So one day, one day.

Speaker 6 (03:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
So again, we're here to discuss the month of November
for the nag or Ice Dogs. And I know what
the fans are thinking out there obviously, you know it
was a month where they didn't win a single game.
So but we're not here to to really hone in
on the negatives. We're gonna talk objectively about the team,
sort of go over what we saw in the last month,

(03:45):
go over some statistics.

Speaker 6 (03:47):
We've also got to.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Head coach Chris BArch with his honest thoughts after the
game on Sunday afternoon, so we're gonna hear his thoughts
on how the team goes forward here and and going
into December and what they are sort of working through
with the process and sort of how they really get
things turned around here, because it's not what you do
in November, it's what you do in February and March.
But again, this is definitely not another month that they

(04:12):
want to go through as a unit. We're also gonna
debut our new segment today. In the second part of
today's show, we're going to have our Scouting with Simmons update,
which Christian is going to go over for prospects for
the nag or ice dogs that are currently with other
organizations hoping to be nag or ice Dogs in the
near future, and to give us a quick update on
how some of the young ice dog prospects are doing

(04:34):
as well. And we're also going to have a ticket
giveaway as we always do on our monthly episode, so
stay tuned for that code word. Could come at any
time during the episode, could come now, could come thirty
minutes from now, could come in the last minute of
the episode.

Speaker 6 (04:46):
You never know.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
But regardless of that, thank you to our loyal listeners
as well. And again, the dot Com podcast is proudly
brought to you by Global Pet Foods and it's three
great Naga Region locations Saint Catharines on Scott Street, Fawn
Hill and Niagara Falls. Thank you to John and Neil
for the continued support.

Speaker 6 (05:03):
Of this show.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
And we haven't been able to give away any free
dog treats this month because that only happens after an
Ice Dog's home win. So hopefully in December, I we'll
have some some some you know, foot traffic into the
global pet food stores.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
Yeah, I think we should probably send some of the
ice dogs in there to get a sweet treat, maybe
replenish the energy, because like you said, it's been a
tough November.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
A no win November is never a good thing.

Speaker 5 (05:29):
You know, that's not something that we want to repeat,
like you said, and you know there's reasons for that.
You know, we've broken them down on this show extensively.
But I think it's I'm excited. You know, we're heading
into the Christmas season. Let's ground the corner, move forward
to a fresh month. But yeah, another tough another tough

(05:49):
loss on Sunday to Peterborough. Difficult matchup, another team that's
been kind of soaring, and you know, you take a
look at where we are now, it's it's a totally
different look, you know, at the beginning of November or
up at the top, you know, competing for the you know,
Central Division title, and now you've fallen right down the

(06:09):
Eastern Conference board down to eighth with Sudbury and Oshawa,
and all of a sudden, your fourth in the Central Division.
It's a totally different look, all of a sudden, four
weeks later, with nine consecutive losses, it's well, where do
we go from here? And I think for this show,
for today, I know, for myself, I just want to
I'm going to point out a couple of things, just

(06:29):
some statistical tidbits, you know, a little bit of analysis,
you know, who's doing well, what is doing well, what
is not? Hint hint, p K and power play would
be splitting those two categories, and then we'll talk a
little bit about some of those scouts or sort of
some of the scouting I've done. Like I said, but

(06:52):
I think it's it's a situation where you know, this
month could have gone a totally different way as well,
and I think we're all kind of in agreeance with that.
You know, there's some good hockey plate this this month,
you know, for the Niagraace Dogs and you know, sometimes
the cookie crumbles a different way. Sometimes you don't get
the bounces and and I think you know, it's it's just, uh,

(07:14):
it's one of those situations you want to leave it
in the past, and that's what we're gonna do here.
But we're gonna break it down. We're gonna do our job.
We're gonna break it wide open. We're gonna see exactly
what was happening here. But just again kind of a
bitter suite, you know. Uh, let's hopefully move forward into
December here with you know, some some uh some progression,

(07:36):
maybe some uh some positivity and hopefully some wins somewhere
around the corner. But yeah, just a just a tough month,
you know, all around, Brandon.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Yeah, it was and and we're we are going to
break all that down for you, uh coming forward. And
we do have a fan poll as well about, uh,
if the team is to to make a move, what
would you like to see them do. We don't have
our usual GM segment with General Manager Frankie Bola that
we usually have on the show. He's away on a
scouting trip at the Whippy Silver Stick Tournament, the Big

(08:05):
Big Junior tournament that happens every single year for the
draft eligible players. So I'm pretty sure every single general
manager from the OHL was there over this weekend. So
we were unable to get him for this monthly show,
but hopefully we'll have him back on for our usual
monthly chats going forward here as well as Captain Kevin
he our captain segment. Again we did we didn't really

(08:27):
want to ask him too much because it's like what
else can he say? Like that the team has has
gone through a really tough month here and he he
left the game yesterday, did come back, but didn't want
to bother him after you know, going through through that,
you know, having to leave the game, and just at
a out of respect to him, just kind of let
him be. But we always we'll get Kevin he back
on the show, I'm sure, and we talked to him

(08:48):
last week for a nice piece on Armchair gmsports dot
com as well, so you can go check that out
as well. But speaking about Kevin he Christian, because it
was a pretty big moment for the young man this weekend,
and again he's gone through a lot with this organization
over four years here in Niagara, been through some great

(09:09):
things as well. Tied to kill Thomas's rookie gold record
as a sixteen year old with twenty one. He's that
he got drafted by the Winnipeg Jets signed, became the
first Chinese born player to sign an NHL entry level contract.
Has played with the Winnipeg Jets up in the preseason
as well, and now you know, continues in his fourth
year with the Ice Dogs and now as tied and

(09:31):
passed Ryan Strom for third all time for Niagara Ice
Dog's goals with now one hundred and one, but one
hundred to tye Ryan Strome. So really exciting weekend for
the captain Kevin He and again a guy that's now
I can't believe it.

Speaker 6 (09:45):
He came as a sixteen year old.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Now he's in his fourth year, possibly the last last
OHL season, could possibly playing the American Hockey League next year,
at least for Winnipeg's organization. But great to see Kevin
He there and he's only a few away from from Hamilton,
from Freddie Hamilton. So don't know if he's gonna get
to one hundred and fifty nine with Andrew Agazino, but
this is still an incredible accolade for a long time

(10:07):
you know, Ice Dog great and Kevin.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
He yeah, and he just keeps scoring.

Speaker 5 (10:10):
He's been really great all season currently on that three
game point streak twenty six points in twenty games this year.
Has been one of their more consistent scorers this season.
And for himself, of course, that accolade is just huge.
And what do you mean, man, he's gonna score seventy
goals this year? Come on, he's gonna pass Agazino, no problem.
But yeah, third and franchise history. What else can you say?

(10:32):
You know, massive congratulations do for him. And I think
he's been one of their best players this season, if
not their best. I think he plays with that speed,
plays with that edge that you know, maybe is missing
from the rest of this top six. You know, you
have a lot of talented players in the top six,
but maybe not as dynamic through the neutral zone. They
don't bring the same kind of speed and the same

(10:54):
kind of attention to detail away.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
From the puck.

Speaker 5 (10:57):
And we've talked a little bit about that, you know,
when we met Kevin, he is he knows how to
navigate the play away from the puck, to put himself
in good spots, and that's where the speed really shines.
And it's showing up on the score sheet. This year,
he's on pace to have which should be one of
his best seasons right there with last year. At seventy

(11:17):
five points with sixty two games played. He's probably going
to be in that conversation. And you know what I
have to say, it's impressive what he's done so far
this year with a power play that's struggling in the
way that it has been. He scored a ton of
power play goals last year. It's seven of his thirty
six came on the power play. He's got thirteen already

(11:38):
in just twenty games with a struggling power play, just
one of them coming on the power play there, so
he's scoring in five on five. He's also dishing quite
a bit. He's got thirteen assists as well in twenty games,
a thirteen and thirteen split for twenty six and twenty
So just a great season so far for the captain
and of course hoping for the best following that injury

(11:59):
on So I'm sure he's you know, he's okay, but
always you know, hate to see something like that, but
just a great, a great start to the season. You know,
he's producing at a rate that's you know, his best
so far in the OHL at one point three points
per game. Last year it was just a little under
that at one point two one. But yeah, I mean,

(12:19):
what else can you say about the captain? And he's
he's been great to start this season, and you know,
there's a lot of players that have been great to
start this season.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
And and and that, for me is the biggest.

Speaker 5 (12:28):
Mystery about this losing streak is is that you got
guys that are performing at you know, career highs. You
got goaltenders who are playing well. You got you know,
individuals that are finding success, and the team as a
whole is struggling.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
And it's it's tough. You know, it's tough.

Speaker 5 (12:44):
It's you know, we kind of have to play doctor
here and and press where it hurts h you know,
to find out exactly what's going on here, you know,
and hopefully we can you know, perform kind of that
you know, head to toe physical here on this show
for you guys. But it's it's difficult, right, It's really difficult.
When you look a guy like Kevin. He he's now
third in franchise record from a scoring perspective, and he's

(13:06):
you know, putting up one point three points per game,
and the team is on a nine game losing streak,
and you know it's just from a team perspective, it's unfortunate.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
But yeah, like for Kevin, great start to the season
so far.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
Yeah, we don't have our usual weekly highlight breakdown because
we're talking about the month as a whole. But I
do have a couple of quick, quick goal highlights to
go over. Excuse me for the audio at the beginning.
If it plays, gets a quality shot on rock, there
we go, this is going to be.

Speaker 6 (13:34):
Kevin.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
He's oh no, this is yeah, this is Kevin. He's
going into sole possession of third place, passing Ryan Stromok.
Yesterday with that home goal that he scored again, that
was to get the Ice Dogs back within one there
really late in the second period. That was a big
goal at the time. But obviously that game didn't end
up going well for the Ice Dogs. But it was
nice to see for Kevin. He a nice tip in

(13:56):
the in the slot there after the point shot. You know,
sometimes don't have to necessarily have the best shot on net,
Just put your stick in the right direction.

Speaker 6 (14:04):
And h and it'll go in.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
And the other highlight that I want to go over
is Obviously it was a big goal in Niagara yesterday,
available Ontario where we grew up and just trying to
enjoy my time there we go.

Speaker 6 (14:16):
I think that was Andrew Shaw was on the broadcast yesterday.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Yes, it was of you your TV great Ice Dogs
along there, But this was the Riley Patterson goal that
sent the Bears flying. Christian, we had to wait till
the second period. We waited down there for the entire
first period and four minutes into the second, which is
now the third straight year that the Ice Dogs haven't
scored the Teddy birth toss goal until the middle period.

Speaker 6 (14:37):
And I know your your.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Shoes were soaked, so you you have to make sure
that you have better shoes on next time. But we
did interview Riley Patterson and that that full interview is
available on our Armchair GM Sports Network, Instagram, TikTok and
Facebook pages if you guys want to go check out
that with Riley Patterson.

Speaker 6 (14:56):
But Christian, we see some big some big bears.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
Also the size it that one.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
This guy, this guy he did he did a great
pregame report as well with with a big bear that
had the Ice Dogs. Jersey that was signed by all
the players, so that'll be nice for somebody to get
as well. But obviously in what was you know, a
negative in the end with a loss, it's always great
to be a part of something like that.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
Yeah, no, for sure.

Speaker 5 (15:21):
And it's uh, it's so special right to be a
part of such a such an awesome event like that.
And you know, for Patterson, he had a fantastic game,
you know, had two goals, had assist as well, three points,
but just so special to be there, Like you said,
had my shoes soaked a little bit. I mean I'd
have to look into the waterproof sols or something for
next year.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
That was brutal, but yeah, great goal. You know, he's
another guy.

Speaker 5 (15:45):
You know, we were talking about Kevin he and you
know we can extend the conversation of Riley Patterson.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
He's been just as good.

Speaker 5 (15:51):
You know, he's got twenty six points in twenty two games,
also on a three game point streak. Like these guys
are producing, you know, they're they're finding ways to score.
It's just some of the other stuff you know, around
them that's been struggling this year. And I love that
goal from him, you know, and that's a Patterson goal.
He loves to get out in transition. I would say,
you know, you look at some of the goals he

(16:12):
scored this year. He scored shorthanded a couple of times.
He scored you in on breakaways. He loves to get
up in the rush and that's a signature, you know,
nice forehand, backhand, puts it up and over the blocker
and brings the Teddy bears down to the ice.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
Yes, some of these are just incredible. I don't know,
like I was out there on the ice.

Speaker 5 (16:29):
We actually yeah, we walked out for the interview with Riley,
and you know, some of these stuffed animals were just
top tier S class Stuffi's and the boys of course,
will pick and choose there, like look at the one
that Galli and I almost fell there. Yeah, so if
you're watching the YouTube version, there's Brandon and I out

(16:53):
there on the ice, a couple of morons. We didn't fall, though,
we were we were concerned, yeah, yeah, almost, it was close.

Speaker 7 (17:02):
We were.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
We were pretty concerned we were gonna end up hitting
the deck there.

Speaker 5 (17:06):
But I will say, just to be a part of
an event like that, you know, honored to be there,
Honored to be you know, a member in support of
you know, such a fantastic cause. And but again like
for Patterson, you know, awesome, awesome, awesome goal, And he's
been just incredible, you know, closing in on the one
hundred and fiftieth career point mark this season, he's just
three points away now with that three point game on

(17:30):
Sunday brings him up to one hundred and forty seven
career points.

Speaker 3 (17:33):
So he's another guy that's been fantastic.

Speaker 1 (17:37):
I do want to quickly mention because it wrapped up
last week the CCHL USA Prospects Challenge, and one of
our own were away at that, Ryan Robrick obviously, you know,
being able to to play on a national stage. There
there's him and his team CHL Jersey. He was miked
up for warm ups in the second game as well,
so a good showcase for him. I know, again the
second game didn't necessarily go as he would have wanted

(17:59):
with some of the you know, the the way that
the team HL wrote was rolling some of the lines
there in that second game, and I know it ended
up going to the overtime or the super overtime or
whatever it was. But I think again as as much
as he would have wanted more from from an event
like this. Over the two days, people got to see
him on a big stage. But I do think that

(18:22):
he came back with motivation, and we saw that the
game in Kitchener, because you know, he had that three
point effort, he had that great playoff the off the
pad right to Kevin, he the shot pass, and then
he had a wonderful goal himself, cutting down the left
wing and going far side. It seems like maybe sort
of a negative like that of him not being able

(18:42):
to really showcase his full ability comes back to Niagara
with a big spark, and we could we could already
see it through two games. He looks, you know, maybe
this would be turned somewhat of a negative into a
positive for the rest of his draft year. That again
has been a quiet point per game for Ryan Robert
because we know that he yes here and I just
hope that he takes this as as a positive and

(19:05):
can really, you know, do a lot of good things
here in the second half of this team.

Speaker 5 (19:09):
So here's the segment of the show where I'm gonna
do another one of my references. All right, last week
it was thunderstruck. This week we're gonna do Secretariat, one
of the greatest movies of all time, Brandon, have you
seen Secretariat? Oh yeah, oh yeah, okay, so you'll understand
this one. Then Secretariat was one of those horses. You know,

(19:30):
he could run with you kind of you know, and compete,
compete and compete and compete. Some days he didn't want
to do it. He'd be kind of slow out of
the gate. But other times he'd blow you right out
of the water and you'd get past turn two. And that,
you know, that historic race where he won the triple Crown.
He destroyed the rest of the field. Ryan Roebrick is Secretariat.

(19:52):
He's the guy that when he wants to can leave
the rest of the field in turn two. And I
think what we just witnessed at the CHL Top Prospects
Challenge was the taunting from the opposing horses that this
guy needed. And he played an incredible game in Kitchener.

(20:14):
He played really well, I thought against Peterborough on Sunday
as well.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
He was active.

Speaker 5 (20:19):
You saw the speed coming back, you saw him making plays.
He made some rushas you know, up the wall, cutting
towards the net where he scored a ton of goals
doing that last year. You know, we see him kind
of coming down the wing and using that big frame,
you know, to kind of push himself into the slot
and find a way to you know, with those fantastic

(20:41):
hands and you know, vision for the back of the net,
find some space, you know, in tight. I saw flashes
of that this past week, and I think for Roebrick,
he's gonna start extending the gap, you know, his secretariat
by thirty five.

Speaker 3 (20:56):
I think that's what we're gonna be saying.

Speaker 5 (20:57):
We're gonna be saying Roebrick by thirty five lengths at
the end of the season, because I can see him
starting to open up the gap. He looked by far
their best player. He looked like their best player by far,
I think in Kitchener and again in Peterborough, I thought
he had a great game. So whatever happened at the
Top Prospects Challenge again as great that he got to

(21:20):
be there. But I do think he came back with
a little bit of chip, a little bit of a
chip on his shoulder, and I'm excited to see what
he does with it. He looks like a man on
a mission, and we know Roebrick on a mission. Is
a scary man for the rest of the Ontario Hockey League.

Speaker 1 (21:35):
Show those scouts definitely that he deserved to be a
first round pick or an upper echelon of a first
round pick that he was projected coming into the year.
So again, hoping the best for Ryan Robrick here going
into the second half. And that's a great reference with Secretary.
It definitely has some attributes that could describe what.

Speaker 6 (21:55):
We've seen from Ryan Robrick this year.

Speaker 1 (21:57):
And again let's hope that he continues positive momentum here
in his first week back from the CHLUSA Prospects Challenge.
But Christian, we'll go forward here with again just going
over November. I mean, like we've talked about the penalty
kill a lot, or the PAP power play a lot,
excuse me, specialty teams in general. The team susceptible to

(22:19):
giving up shorthanded goals. They gave up another one yesterday
against Peterborough. They're trying to five forwards again on the
power play. They scored a couple of goals against Kitchener,
but it's still, you know, last in the Ontario Hockey
League and it'll be tie in a little bit to
our poll later on as well, but when we get
into sort of what do you think that the team
might look at in the trade market of things like that.

(22:40):
But just as as a general synopsis here, because we've
talked about it every single week on the show. You know,
twenty one goals for forty six against this month simply
not good enough. Seven and two record, only two points
out of a possible eighteen this month. So what are
you seeing here? And again, you know, objectively, how do
we look at going forward?

Speaker 5 (23:00):
Here I'm looking at for me neutral zone lanes and
I think it's something that you know, I have had
a chance to speak with, you know, Riley Patterson posts
the Peterborough game. I asked him a question about it,
like what's happening in the neutral zone? The power play
is simply not getting possession in the offensive zone with consistency.

(23:22):
It's just not happening like that is effectively the shortfall
or the you know, the uplifting characteristic of most power
plays in hockey is if you find puck possession in
the offensive zone, you give your top players good looks

(23:42):
at the net, you start registering shots, you find back
door feeds, you've kind of open up the ice you
get those penalty killers scrambled. That's how you score goals
in the power play, and we're not even getting to
that point. It's through the neutral zone. We can't even
get into the zone. So for me, it's the breakout.

(24:03):
I think they need to find a way to come
through the neutral zone with speed, maintain the speed, and
then once they get into the zone, dial it back.
It's like they're a north south right now, and once
they get over the blue line, they have to be
able to make that transition to east west and even

(24:23):
through the neutral zone. You know, it's fine to be
north south when you're coming out of your zone, you know,
but once you cross your blue line and now you're
playing neutral zone and then offensive zone hockey on the
power play, you have to find some you know, east
west movement.

Speaker 3 (24:37):
You have to be able to move that puck across ice.

Speaker 5 (24:40):
You have to get across the blue line without going
in a straight line. There's not a single team in
the Ontario Hockey League that's gonna let you skate up
the ice in a straight line and get across their
blue line.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
It's just not gonna happen.

Speaker 5 (24:54):
So for me, that's what I'm seeing and it's what
I saw in Peterborough, or sorry, not in Peterborough. Keep
doing this, it's I'm in Peterborough. In Niagara against Peterborough
on Sunday. I saw a power play that has a
ton of talent that's just not getting across the blue line.

Speaker 3 (25:13):
That's what it is.

Speaker 5 (25:15):
If Ryan Robrick gets a look from the top of
the circle, he's gonna score one out of three times.
Kevin he on the back door with a one timer,
I would say it's probably a similar metric for how
many times he's gonna score. They have so many weapons
on this team. It's a barracks failled with artillery, but

(25:35):
there's they're not pulling the trigger.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
They can't get across the blue line. It's like, you know,
that's the way I look at it. It's, you know,
if you get.

Speaker 5 (25:46):
Across the blue line, you give your sharpshooters an opportunity
to score. But they're not getting the looks because they're
not getting across the blue line. And that's what I'm
seeing in the power play.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
I also want to take this to something that I listen.
I was listening to the Dallas Stars Ottawa Senators game
because I had Dallas's goalie in fantasy, so I was invested.
But they have the best power play in the NHL
right now. And after the game they had asked Miko Ranton,
and obviously, you know, an elite player in his own right,
what makes a good power play And he said, basically,

(26:18):
you know, he's a new player within that Dallas Stars organization.
But they had the Wyatt Johnston's of the world. They
had the Jason Robertsons, the Rufe Hintses, and they all
have a role on that power play. And he said,
I just want to come in and find my role
on the power play. He taught talked about it's about
having elite players in the power play, but also the

(26:39):
chemistry and finding that chemistry of where everybody needs to be,
where their assignments are in the power play.

Speaker 6 (26:44):
And I think you can sort of translate that to
what the Ice Doruct are doing.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
They have so much talent out there on the power play,
but they don't have maybe necessarily designed roles where every
single guy know, all five guys know, this is their
spot in the left circle, this is their spot in
the right circle, this is their spot in front of
the net, this is their spot as the quarterback on
the power play, which for the Dallas Stars is Miro Heyskin.
And so I think that sort of goes into you know,

(27:09):
translating that from the National Hockey League to the to
the to the OHL as well, you can you can
have those same similarities as to what I was listening
to last night, And it just so happened that they
asked them about the power play, because why Johnston scored
two on the power play last night and they have
like an incredible looking power play former you know, Ohl
alum for the Winter Spitfires. By the way, why Johnston

(27:30):
player of the Year as well for the Winter Spitfires
back in twenty twenty one, twenty two, I believe. But
I just wanted to throw that in because I think
that that's important about trying to figure out what exactly
this power play needs to do and what everybody knowing
their exact assignments of where.

Speaker 6 (27:45):
They need to be the most successful on it.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
I think that's a fantastic way to look at it.

Speaker 5 (27:49):
It's just like anything else, you need to have balance,
right If if I'm gonna go bake a cake and
I don't have the same consistency that's in the recipe.
It's not gonna come out looking right, right. You need
to have all the different ingredients. And you know, when
you look at what a power play is supposed to do,
there's different ingredients, like you said, that are required. You
needed some passing, you need some shooting, you need some

(28:10):
grinding ability, somebody's gonna win the puck back in the corner.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
You need some speed on the back.

Speaker 5 (28:14):
Yet where are we going to find that on this roster?
I think there's a lot of Well, we got five guys,
you can put the puck in the net. No, put
them out there. Let's all of you score shoot from
center ice. I don't care for me. I feel like
we're missing, to your point, a little bit of that recipe, right,

(28:35):
the equation. I've we talked about the equation last week.
I feel like I'm a math teacher. What's the equation
that's gonna work?

Speaker 3 (28:44):
Right? What variables are we looking for?

Speaker 5 (28:46):
And I think maybe what's missing on that top power
play is a little bit of the other stuff, right,
you know, maybe use a Noah red on that top unit.
You know, somebody who's gonna, you know, bring a little
bit of you know, puck possession, a little bit of grit,
somebody who can work in tight you know, maybe somebody
plays out front.

Speaker 3 (29:03):
We talked about it against you know in the Peterborough game.

Speaker 5 (29:06):
Throw Liam Spencer in front of the ned, you know,
get a big body in front of the opposing goaltender.
You know what helps a guy like Ryan Roebricks score goals.
Screens out front, good passing coming from the other side.
You know, maybe instead of Kevin he on the opposing wing,
another shooter, maybe put you know, a Ryerson Edgar over there,

(29:28):
or put a Riley Patterson over there, somebody that has
a little bit more passing pedigree. So I feel like
it's you know, maybe starting to get outside of your
comfort zone from the coaches perspective and say, you know
what like, yeah, these guys can all score, and yeah
I want Ryan Roebrick over here and Kevin he over here.
So we have a you know, dual sniping line. It's

(29:49):
basically like a firing squad. But in some situations, while
in all situations it's.

Speaker 3 (29:58):
Easy to read.

Speaker 5 (30:00):
Do is go, Okay, well I'm gonna block that guy's shot.
And then you go block that guy shot?

Speaker 3 (30:05):
What now?

Speaker 5 (30:06):
What what is it that the power play says that
they're doing accomplishing, right, what are the alternatives?

Speaker 3 (30:12):
You know?

Speaker 5 (30:12):
If Roebrick isn't scoring from the top of the circle
and Kevin he isn't taking a one timer, then what
else is happening? Is is Noah Reid gonna walk out
of the corner and roof one in the crease?

Speaker 3 (30:26):
You know?

Speaker 5 (30:26):
Are they going to fire a shot from the blue
line and have Liam Spencer out front causing chaos in
the blue ice?

Speaker 3 (30:34):
Yes, there you go, Like that's to your point.

Speaker 5 (30:38):
I think we're in agreement that they need more options
on the power play. They got to find a different look,
find a different look, you know, and change the angle,
you know, you know, look at it from a different angle.

Speaker 3 (30:50):
And I think, you know, that's something that you.

Speaker 5 (30:52):
Know, they could benefit from on the penalty kill five
on five. I think they just need to mix it up.
They need to mix it up, and I think for
the power play, like that's that for me is a
big one. Just try to put different guys in different spots.
Confuse people like confuse the other team. Put Ivan Galliano

(31:14):
at the point, great hands can see the ice granted
defensive side, Like if you know we're not gonna give up,
you know, breakaways in the power play. But he's a
guy that is shifty, he moves well, he can create
passing lanes, you know what I mean exactly, So I
think for me, just just try stuff. Let's start trying stuff,

(31:35):
you know, throw you know what at the wall and
see what sticks. And I think, you know, now's a
great time to be doing that.

Speaker 3 (31:42):
It's a nine.

Speaker 5 (31:43):
Game losing streak, like it's it's perfect in some ways,
it's like a blank canv.

Speaker 3 (31:49):
It's it's a fresh start. Nobody's gonna be mad.

Speaker 5 (31:53):
If you put you know, somebody on the fourth line
and then put a guy on the fourth line on
the first line. Like, now's the time to be trying things.
Let's just start trying stuff, you know.

Speaker 1 (32:03):
Let's yeah, they're they're trying the defensive box there. They
might as well try some stuff on the power play too.
This is when you try it out, right, Like, this
is when you got to get stuff figured out and
we'll see what the team looks like going forward. But again,
just they continue to to try to search for answers
on that sense, but again trying to come up with
some constructive ideas on our end because that's what what

(32:23):
we do on the show. We talk about what we're seeing,
and you know, from from an overhead view, it just
seems like again just the options and trying to figure
out designed roles for everybody within that five man unit
is sort of like trying to put together, you know,
five guys on the basketball court. You know, who's gonna
be the power forward, who's gonna be the center, who's
gonna be you know, the shooting guard, who's gonna be
the point guard. So it's you know, trying to find

(32:45):
that mix because they have the players, they just need to,
like you said, find the right mix within that baking
that cake. So yep, we'll see what happens with that.
But we're gonna take a quick commercial break. We're gonna
come back, we're gonna analyze a little bit more. We're
gonna hear from Myce Dougs head coach Chris BArch, and
we'll get in you who are a scouting segment as well,

we're gonna hear from Ice Dog's head coach Chris BArch

(37:46):
and inside the coaches Room an extended version here just
in a little bit here again, no Frankie Vola and
Captain Kevin Heath segment on this month's installment anyways, but
we also have Chris Bartsch to give his thoughts from
the team perspective, which is always nice for him to
get provide you guys with some insightful answers, and it's
an extended version today, so it's a good thing. We

(38:07):
only really have one interview to go over on today's show,
and we're also going to hear from Christian with the
scouting with Simmons as well, so stay tuned for that
before we wrap up today's show. But we're going to
start segment two off today with our fan poll and
again make sure to give us a follow on x
at Dog Pound Podcast to get it on our fan
polls as well as on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok by

(38:28):
searching the arm Chair Gym Sports Network. But for this
fan poll, specifically for you guys listening and audio, I'll
go over it. If you're watching a video, you can
see it on the screen. It wasn't the November that
the Ice Dogs wanted, but going forward, what would be
the biggest need for the team via trade to get
things going in the right direction. The answers I provided
were top six forward, middle six forward, top four defenseman,

(38:49):
and puck moving slash power play defenseman and puck moving
slash power play. Defenseman won to thirty four percent, but
it was very close as top six forward and top
four defenseman at thirty three percent. Zero percent for middle
six forward Christian A, what were your what are your
thoughts on the results? And B what are your thoughts
on it personally?

Speaker 5 (39:09):
Yeah, so I think I can agree with the puck
moving power play defense We were just talking about it
in a segment one.

Speaker 3 (39:17):
What do they need?

Speaker 5 (39:18):
They need the puck across the blue line with consistency,
puck moving power play defenseman gets you that. So I
can one hundred percent agree with this fan poll at
that thirty four percent. You know, I'll give you the trophy.
You know, I'm not gonna not gonna argue with that
too much. Top four defenseman, similar situation. We've talked about
it a bit on this show. The defensive core has

(39:40):
struggled a little bit from a defensive standpoint, and we'll
listen to Chris Bartsch a little bit later in this
segment talk a little bit about what it looks like
back there. That's a little bit of inexperience, a lot
of guys in their first years.

Speaker 3 (39:53):
You know.

Speaker 5 (39:53):
He talks a little bit about, you know, Ryznecker being
a first year player and you know, Lee Spencer being
more or less a first year player, and then the
players that have had experience in the Ontario Hockey League
are playing with each other for the first time. So
I don't know that I agree like we need a
top four defenseman.

Speaker 3 (40:12):
I think we need more time.

Speaker 5 (40:14):
For the top four defenseman that we already have to
start developing chemistry.

Speaker 3 (40:18):
I think that's what it is. I don't know that
we need an extra guy.

Speaker 1 (40:23):
And it's hard to when you part with and Andrew Wisik,
who was there for for a long time and Again,
I understand that the crowd there that would still like
to see him a part of this team given his
offensive capabilities, but again he's down with the Trent and
Golden Hawks and OJHL now, so there's nothing you can
do about it there. This is your your team right
now that you're you're playing with. But anyways, I just
wanted to kind of throw that in there because I
know there have been parts of the fan base that

(40:44):
have asked, you know, why that wasn't an option, but
and I.

Speaker 3 (40:48):
Think it very much still is an option.

Speaker 5 (40:50):
I think if if things change here, well, if they
don't change, then things will. I think there's there's lots
of changes still to be made and we'll kind of see.
It's kind of the reason why we put this poll
out is that things aren't going well. The team hasn't
been winning games, So anything's an option, right, Like, why
is it coming back? Isn't you know, totally out of

(41:12):
the picture, right? So I do think you know, they
could use you know, somebody like that. But but to
your point, Brandon, Yeah, the chemistry with him gone is
definitely kind of up in the air.

Speaker 3 (41:25):
The top six forward at thirty three.

Speaker 5 (41:28):
Percent, I don't know how anybody in our fan base
is looking at our top six and saying, you.

Speaker 3 (41:39):
Know what we need? We need another score.

Speaker 5 (41:44):
I hate to break it to you, guys, but we
got lots of those, got lots of guys that could
put the buck in the net.

Speaker 3 (41:51):
We got a lot of them.

Speaker 5 (41:53):
And the even crazier part about this fan poll is
that what we really need in at the lowest voted option,
the middle six forward. And we're gonna throw some stats
at you here. This is why we wanted to open
up with this fan pull. The bottom six hasn't been

(42:13):
scoring to start this season. The top five scorers on
the Niagara Ice Dogs are in the top six. They
are registering just under one hundred and thirty points through
the twenty four games we've played so far this season.

Speaker 3 (42:27):
That's one hundred and twenty nine.

Speaker 5 (42:29):
The next five guys under them as forwards have twenty
nine points together. There's a single guy in the bottom
six that has over ten points so far this season.
So I disagree with all of you. We need bottom
six scoring. We need offense to take the pressure off

(42:51):
those top five guys. It feels like if Robrick and
Patterson and he and Sada don't score or no one
else is going to right and I'm glad we pulled
it up here. So for the for those of you
who are watching on YouTube, and you can see it here.
The top five guys are bridged with the bottom five

(43:16):
by two defensemen. Liam Spencer and Ben Reizenecker have more
scoring than the bottom six forwards, and that I just
I think needs to change. I think you win hockey
games as a team. Doesn't matter how awesome Kevin he
is playing. He could have one hundred and seventy five

(43:37):
points in sixty six games this year. If the Ice
Dogs cannot defend and cannot score when he's not on
the ice, it doesn't change anything. They'll lose every game
this season. I think we saw a little bit of
this with the you know, with the Brady Wastle in trade.

(43:58):
We needed some more players in the bottom and I
think another move is coming. I think another move is required.
And if I'm Frank Evola, I mean right now, I'm
an armchair GM. I'm not an actual GM, but if
I was, I would be looking at filling that void.
I would be saying to myself, who do I need

(44:18):
in the bottom six. That's gonna start scoring right, and
we got it up on the screen here. You know,
the lineup against Peter Brow that first line, it's not
the actual.

Speaker 6 (44:29):
First line, the third line.

Speaker 3 (44:30):
That's the third line.

Speaker 5 (44:31):
So no Reed, Ivan Gallianov, and Raith Smith with Juddnoff,
Cole Cooksy and Hayden Reid.

Speaker 3 (44:37):
That's your bottom six.

Speaker 5 (44:40):
I have the like besides Noah Reed, who has scored
with consistency over the past couple of weeks. And so
is Raith Smith. You know, he had a goal you
know last weekend as well. Gallianov, Judd no Off, Cole
Cooksi and Hayden Reid. I haven't There has been almost
no offense from those guys, and that's something that needs
to change.

Speaker 6 (44:59):
And Monks as well, who's in and out.

Speaker 5 (45:01):
Monks who's in and out as well. They need more
offense from this group. Hage as well, who's.

Speaker 3 (45:07):
Finds himself in the top six more often than not.

Speaker 5 (45:11):
But I do think for some like he's a that's
a different conversation of a guy that's supposed to be
in the top six, somebody who should be producing.

Speaker 3 (45:21):
We just haven't really found his line combination yet.

Speaker 6 (45:25):
And Sean Doherty as well, as the end of the
lineup as well.

Speaker 5 (45:28):
Right, and it's just you know, again again, I hate
to go back to this. It's the equation. It's you know,
what are we gonna do here that's gonna work? You know, Roebrick,
Zoda and Edgar has been kind of a staple line
over the past couple of weeks. Mix it up, you know,
maybe put Cole Cooksy on that line with Roebrick and Soda,
or or you know, put Cooksy in between Kevin he

(45:52):
and Alexander Hage, like mix it up. You know, take
a little bit of speed of Cooksy and put it
with you know, Hage and Patterson and you know, some
shooting and some playmaking. Like I think that's what That's
what we're looking at here, is that the top six
is like an immovable object. It's a solution, and we

(46:13):
are we haven't dissolved it yet. It's been the same
six guys all season long and all of November. We
haven't ever really seen aside from you know, injuries and
absences like you know, the world you know challenge with
Ryers and Edgar leaving the top prospects Ryan Roebrick and
then some of the injuries that we've seen, you know,
keep some of the top guys out. We haven't seen

(46:36):
that top six get moved at all. And I think,
for me, that's what I really want to see. I
want to see, you know, I want to see Judd
Noft on the first line for a game. Yeah, mix
it up. Put him up there with with Patterson and
he put him up there with Sada and Edgar. Put
Roebrick on a line with two other guys and let

(46:56):
him drive the play, right, Like, I think, you know,
that's gonna change things here because it's going to open
up the scoring. It's gonna spread it across four lines.
You put your best five guys on the ice up
against the other team's best five guys. You know, most
of the time those guys cancel each other out right,
And I know we're getting a way off the rails here.

(47:17):
The original you know question was do I agree with
the fan poll? I don't agree with the fan poll
because we need more bottom six scoring. But I think
what we actually need is a change of scenery. These
guys need to move around. I need to see different
line combinations, and I think they need to see it too. Yes,

(47:37):
And that's how I would answer the fan poll. I
agree a defenseman would be fantastic, but what would be
even better is if this Ice Dog's key team could
start scoring again, which, by the way, they are one
of the worst teams in the OHL at scoring right now.
There's sixth in the league bottom sixth, sorry, sixth worst

(47:59):
in the league at scoring so far with seventy seven
goals four which isn't hard to believe with the amount
of talent that they have. So that for me, it's
it's mix it up, mix it up. Get these guys
playing with different looks. Spread the scoring from lines one
to four as opposed to one to two. You make
yourself so easy to defend, you.

Speaker 3 (48:21):
Know what I mean.

Speaker 5 (48:22):
So that was my very long and misguided answer to
the fan poll. But that's what I see being a
primary issue here, one of them at least.

Speaker 1 (48:31):
Do you think it's the same thing with the defensive
pairs as well. I know Tiller was out for that
penning suspension, and Barnes has been in an out of
a lineup as sort of the seventh d and it's
been like Chanowski missed a couple of games as well,
but he's back in so like again when it comes
to the defensive side, like do you have that those
same thoughts.

Speaker 3 (48:49):
I think it's a little bit of both.

Speaker 5 (48:51):
You know, definitely, the chemistry is something in the defensive
zone that the.

Speaker 6 (48:55):
Only returning defenseman from last year, right right.

Speaker 5 (48:59):
And you know, he's asked to play you know, difficult minutes.
You know, he plays on the penalty kill. You know,
he plays, you know, eighteen something like that, eighteen minutes
a night. Like he's a he's a grinder for them,
but he doesn't have, you know, a partner that he's
found some kind of chemistry with, you know, and you
know you keep right, but but again, like these are
guys that haven't been playing each other.

Speaker 3 (49:20):
For very long.

Speaker 6 (49:21):
Guys haven't been playing with each other. That's the point.
You know.

Speaker 5 (49:23):
The other thing is these guys are exhausted. Like if
if you're not scoring goals, you're spending the majority of
the game in your zone. If you can't break out,
the defencemen are gonna get eaten alive in the corners.
And that's what's happening right now. We've talked about it
over the last couple of weeks on this show, Like
the defensive zone hasn't been strong. You know in and

(49:46):
around the net, the mist assignments. It's exhaustion. These guys
are playing so many minutes in their own zone. There's
no oxygen anymore. You know what you need.

Speaker 3 (50:01):
You need to be rested to make solid decisions.

Speaker 5 (50:04):
You need to have a balance, and I think the
Ice Dogs right now are missing some of that balance
and they're spending too much time in the defensive zone
their defense. The defenders are not getting a break. And
it's the same. The same goes for the goalies. And
you know your malenco and Charlie Robertson have been spectacular
this season. This team has been outshot with consistency since

(50:28):
the pock drop of this season. They've been outshot almost
every single game. Excuse me, and these guys find a
way to keep this team in the game. And I
think they're exhausted. The defensive corps exhausted. The forward core
is exhausted that they're not scoring. It's just it's an
exhausted group right that you know needs a coffee, you

(50:53):
know they needed. They need something new. They need a
new cafe, a new barista, a new look. This team
needs a new look heading into December, and hopefully we
can provide them with that. Hopefully the lines start to
get blended, you know, in a different way. I think,
you know, maybe it's a it's a shaken not stirred
month for this team. Let's let's mix it up a

(51:15):
little bit, you know, let's let's try different combinations, you know,
and and you know, put different you know, guys with
guys that maybe they haven't played with, and you know,
to try it and practice like you know, see get
guys comfortable with other with other guys, and you know,
I don't know, I think for me, it's you know,

(51:35):
we're kind of just grabbing, you know, we're we're grasping
for for straws at this point because it's it's and
confusion that that, yeah, has completely confused the fan base.
Nobody knows what's going on. This is a team that
has some top end talent. You got you know, three

(51:57):
NHL drafted prospects, you got to top ten projected prospect,
you got one of the hottest rookies in the Ontario
Hockey League, you got two incredible goaltenders, and you're on
a nine game losing streak.

Speaker 3 (52:09):
Mix it up. It's time to mix it up.

Speaker 1 (52:13):
An honor of Christian, our code word for this month's
take a giveaway is going to be Cafe, so make

(52:36):
So fay with that said, Christian, I think this is
a good time to go to Ice Dog's head coach
Chris Bartsch and get his thoughts. We'll come back quickly
discuss it and then we'll get hit your scouting update
as well. So inside the Coach Inside the coaches room
is always is brought to you by the Nagar Employment
Health Center helping people find work in the Nagar Read
and since nineteen eighty three, checkout the update job board

(52:56):
at EHC don dot C to find your next work opportunity. Today,
here's what the Ice Dog's head coach had to say
about his team's performance over the month of November.

Speaker 4 (53:05):
Special teams seem to be a problem again. Three power
play goals and they get a short handed goal.

Speaker 10 (53:12):
Yeah sorry, three yes for them. Well for me, it's
you know, just making the right play at the right time.
We have our fourth line out, you know, besides the
special teams. We're down or what three to two, and
then uh we turn to puck over when we have

(53:33):
to manage that puck get it deep, you know, live
to fight another day. And we turn over and now
we're down four to two. So for me, you know,
I mean we had control of the game. Uh you know,
you look at the shot count. You know we were
we were doubled them. You knows owe possession time, the
ice was tilted. It's understanding what your job is at

(53:54):
that in that moment, and we turn a buck over
and it goes the other way. So for me, you know,
I talk about special teams. PK has been fantastic all
year long. It comes down to making the right declasion
at the right time.

Speaker 4 (54:08):
Yeah, too bad. You the power play couldn't have translated
over from the kitchener game where you were three for five.

Speaker 10 (54:16):
That's s sixty percent. Is pretty much historic. If that's
gonna come to fruition every night. So you're asking for
something that is a unicorn. Unicorns don't exist. There's a
lot of Yeah, yeah, if I can get one of those,
that'd be fantastic. So you're I mean, with that being said,
you know, you gotta look at the game in terms

(54:37):
of you know, real you know, a realistic outlook. Like
I said, you know, we control play, We control momentum.
Power play did generate shots, and what you're looking, you know,
out of a or you're getting out of a power
play is momentum creating that wave and the wave continued
through to uh five on five play. You know what,

(54:58):
I would say, there's a couple of players on our
team that wanted better efforts and you know, we as
a group, you know, kind of uh or or live
or die or or achieve success and her failure together.
So that's where we're at.

Speaker 4 (55:12):
How do you convince players, you know, that they don't
have to be the hero to break this streak? I mean,
it seems to be a team thing that to break it,
but obviously the individuals probably have a lot to put
a lot of pressure on themselves.

Speaker 10 (55:27):
Yeah, I don't think that's a mindset in our room.
You know what, We've gotten great efforts from multiple lines,
multiple individuals, So I'd have to push against you on
that one. I don't really feel that there's players that
put it just on their shoulders. It's it is a
shared uh responsibility.

Speaker 1 (55:45):
So okay, well, coach, I know it. That's not a
month that you want to go through. Is not being
able to pick.

Speaker 6 (55:52):
Up a two point month is?

Speaker 10 (55:53):
Yeah? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (55:55):
So is that one where you just kind of wipe
the slate clean now go to December? But also learn
from what you have to improve on after not winning
a game in November, Like how do you balance the
negative and the positive with that?

Speaker 10 (56:08):
Again, we always look at process. I know you probably
could answer the questions that you're gonna ask me, but hey,
we break up this season into seven game segments. So
coming into this segment, we were down oh two, it's
a must game or a wing game in your own,
your own arena to pull it to a one to two.
And now we're in a deficit of three and we've

(56:28):
got four more games left in this segment. So for us,
that's the focus. You know, I know everybody wants to
pull it out and create their story, but we internally,
like I said, stay focused on what's at hand here,
and we're down three nothing in our segment.

Speaker 1 (56:43):
We've got to push back, and I feel like the
last three games you've played you have had some positive things.
You mentioned the power play in Kitchener was good, you guys,
controlled play in the Barry game just didn't come way
with the two points. And then tonight you had a
twenty shot second period and really took it to that team,
and then things sappened the third. So it's that complete
sixty minute effort. But have you seen sort of things
going in the right direction with the last three games

(57:04):
of this slide?

Speaker 10 (57:05):
Yeah, I look at this. We've got, you know, and
again some real solid development pieces on the back end.
We've got Dell Euch first year in the league, Resnecker
first in the league. Spencer sixty games over two years
with London Knight, so he's pretty much a first year
player in the league. You got Barnes, a first year
player in the league. So we've got four of our

(57:27):
sixteen men that our first year OHL players. There's not
very many teams in the OHL that have that, so
we're going to go through some development, you know, not
I would say ups and downs, or it's not a
consistent curve in a positive direction. So we've worked through that,
and then also to you know, on the on the
front side. You know, well, even look at goaltenders. You know,

(57:49):
Robbie's coming back from too hip surgery and we've got
Umo was a rookie in the OHL as a seventeen
year old, and there's a lot of responsibly put on
those those individuals shoulder. But as a group, you know,
and just the way I've gone through life and the
way I've played and the experiences that I had, I've had,

(58:10):
you know, and I told the group, you know, it's
where you are in February March. A lot of people
will forget about what happens in November. So for us,
that mindset, yes, we you know, and do look back
at the Kingston game, you know, the very game, the
very gaming game here you know, some young elements and
some young learning lessons, the Ottawa game, you know, so

(58:33):
you know the game tonight where the process is there.
It's just again, you know, supporting and pushing to to
get that outcome at the end that we want. But
the same token, developing and working with a very very
young group you know, a very important you know, part

(58:53):
of your team. So you know, it goes hand in hand.
So for us, hey, there's there's battles, but then there's
the war. And for me, you know, I mean in
my mindset, I've been in hundreds of battles and I
understand the war at the end. And I've been clipped
a lot of times. And we'll keep getting clipped as

(59:14):
a group. But as you know, as long as you
keep coming back, he jump back on that horse, it
doesn't end like it just keeps pushing. So for me
and our group, it's a mindset that we just you know,
you know, walk ahead and walk through one trench, and
then we get through that trench and then get through
the next. And like I said, we'll learn and grow

(59:35):
and harden through these experiences. And it's where we are
in February March is what we're going to be, uh,
you know, hanging our hat on and what we want
to be critiqued on when it comes to that point.

Speaker 1 (59:46):
And then you talked at training camp about your core
principles and things like that, and for you and the
coaching staff, is it more so trying to get through
to not only the leadership group but the entire team?

Speaker 6 (59:56):
Is it excellent nose? Is it? Is it more so
like interpersonal stuff like is it stuff like motivation? Is
it like?

Speaker 1 (01:00:04):
Is it is it more so stuff that you can
teach out on the ice, or is it stuff that
needs to to get done, you know, more so just
one on one or or talking to them back here.

Speaker 10 (01:00:13):
I like the effort, Like I really don't not like
the effort. You know, the effort is there from the
majority of players. Yes, there's some games that would like
more effort from some, but as a collective group, I
like the effort, you know, So for me walking away
from it, uh yeah, you look at process. I like

(01:00:35):
the majority of the process as well too. You know,
if we are a couple of things go differently tonight.
You know, we're sitting here and we're having a different conversation.
So I wouldn't change what our preparation is. I wouldn't
change the mindset that we're coming with it. You know
eventually will turn and that's just you know, getting these

(01:00:56):
players to understand that. You know, they as much as
this is difficult, they're going to learn a lot more
by getting through this. And then you know, winning a
couple and lose a couple, you know, this is something
that they will go through and if they want to
continue in the world of hockey at some point through
it and they're going to learn, you know, tools that

(01:01:16):
will allow them to get through it or help others
get through.

Speaker 1 (01:01:19):
And then last question, Kevin he now third all time
for ice Dog's goals as the captain, you know, had
a pretty good month for himself statistically, but you know
wants more from the group itself. But what can you
say about Kevin on and off the ice and having
an accolade like that here for a franchise that he's
been through a lot of ups and downs with over
four years of playing.

Speaker 10 (01:01:38):
Yeah, no, when you achieve or put that feather in
your cap, it's a great, you know element for him.
And I'm sure he's played with a lot of players
that have supported him in that success. And and again
the organization you know, investing in him in a year
over year over year. So it's nice to do that
in one spot. And you know, again just you know

(01:02:00):
does work. You know, he's a very elite athlete and
it's nice to see him, you know, achieve that marker.

Speaker 1 (01:02:06):
All right, Christian, There was Ice Doug's head coach Chris
Bartch with his wrap up thoughts and again still always
in good spirits despite you know, some some negative stuff
that it has has happened over the last month with
the team's results, and trying to keep the guys positive
and upbeat and trying to still figure out process process
processes what he's talking about here, And I just want

(01:02:27):
to get your your general takeaways about what he had
to say and how they're going to move forward into December.

Speaker 3 (01:02:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:02:33):
No, I'm gonna put the baseball bat down. Like you know,
we've been beating this dead horse the whole month. So
there's not a whole lot of takeaways that are new
from this Chris Parch segment. But I will say I
love the way he looks at hockey. Again, you know,
we've also said this a couple of times, you know,
with the seven game stretches, you know, he talks a
lot about this way of approaching games in weeks they

(01:02:53):
look at it. In these seven game blocks, he's preparing
this team for playoffs. He's getting them ready for what
does that dynamic look like when you go down three
nothing or you know three, or you win two you
lose the next It's so I like that, And again
he's talked about it before. The effort's been solid and

(01:03:16):
nobody's saying that that's not true. And well, we'll have
to digress a little bit. You know, with all of
this negativity, the team is still working hard. You know,
these guys are are are putting in the effort. It's
just a little bit of a you know, confused time
for the team that goes through you know, a funk.
But I like that, you know, he has that positive attitude.

(01:03:37):
I love that he is reassuring his guys and you know,
continuing with the same message. You know, he's an unwavering
voice of confidence in that room and it's eventually going
to pay dividends. And I think that's exactly what this
group needs. They need the Chris bartch you know, day in,
day out, same message, same group of guys.

Speaker 3 (01:03:57):
You know, we're gonna get there.

Speaker 5 (01:03:59):
And I think there's there's nothing else that you can't
ask for anything more, you know, from a head coach's
who's just gonna keep encouraging you. And he takes the positives.
You know, he's talked a lot about you know, the
little things and kind of the just you know, we've
talked about it too. It's the minute details. You know,
we're that close and we're we're that far away. It's

(01:04:22):
it's it's within grasping distance. And you know, for me,
those are my takeaways. I think it's it's a lot
of positivity. It's encouraging. This team is gonna get there
and he's gonna help them do it.

Speaker 6 (01:04:34):
But he's very vocal on the bench.

Speaker 1 (01:04:35):
You could, like the whole game, you can hear him,
you know, directing traffic about where he wants guys to
go with the assignments, like people have to Rai. He's
a first year head coach at this level, so like
he's still trying to learn about how exactly he wants
to go about this age group and what he wants
from them, the best course of action, how to get
through to them. Again, a completely different way of coaching

(01:04:55):
in twenty twenty five than when he was coming up
as a as a player that made the into the
National Hockey League in the mid to late to twenty
Ten's there, but it's like it's just it's so much
different now trying to figure out what that fine line
of x's and o's are and then also trying to
inspire the guys off the ice and keep their their
spirits up. When things aren't going well, you can't you

(01:05:17):
can't just disintegrate these kids because it's never gonna be
a good thing.

Speaker 6 (01:05:21):
In junior hockey.

Speaker 1 (01:05:22):
They have no confidence and then they have no confidence
and going out on the ice and it just translates
to bad play. So I think him and his coaching staff,
and again they've they've changed some things within the coaching
staff already this year that they're still trying to work
through exactly what the best plan is. And as you mentioned,
this segment seven game segment was you know, quite frankly
a failure, but there were positives that they took away

(01:05:43):
from it, but they couldn't put it all together in
a sixty minute effort.

Speaker 5 (01:05:47):
And they're building that belief is what they're doing, and
he's gonna continue to help them do that. That you
got to believe in your systems. You know, if you
don't believe in the systems and in the process, as
Chris Bares likes to describe it, you're not gonna get anywhere.
Like this is a team that has, you know, talent,
but they're being coached a specific way and over time
they're gonna get used to that coaching style. Yeah, Chris

(01:06:09):
BArch is new to it, but so are the players.
So a lot of these guys have come from different
organizations with different coaching staffs, different coaching styles, different play styles.

Speaker 3 (01:06:19):
It's gonna take time for them to figure it out.

Speaker 5 (01:06:22):
You can't expect anybody to be good at anything on
the first time. I've been doing this podcast for a
month now and I still suck at it. Like, it's
gonna take time for these guys to get good at
the process and the system that he is building, that
foundation and that framework. They're buying into it. That's what matters,
and eventually it's gonna pay dividends.

Speaker 3 (01:06:44):
You know.

Speaker 5 (01:06:44):
It's twenty five games in for this team as a whole,
you know, and we talked about it in the offseason
leading up to this year. The turnover has been incredible,
Like top to bottom, the turnover has been incredible. It's
a it's a team from the general manager down to
the equipment manager that is still building trust with one another.

(01:07:06):
The coaching staff is entirely new, general manager is new.
There's like fifteen new players, the goaltenders are new. So
it's gonna take time. We've talked about on this show,
like there's not a ton of time. You know, they
got to figure it out soon. But it's coming. It's coming.
They have the tools, they got a great coach, great

(01:07:28):
general manager, they have the pieces. Let them put the
puzzle together, give it, let them breathe. It's gonna happen.
It's gonna come.

Speaker 1 (01:07:36):
You can't make changes again after you've made changes so
much over the last five years. And again we're not
going to talk about the past and that it is
what it is. But you know, as you mentioned, you
got to let them breathe. You got to give them
time here.

Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
I know, you know.

Speaker 1 (01:07:49):
It's what have you done for me lately type of business.
But and especially with the way junior hockey goes, this
team could look completely different next year with players moving
on or what have you. But if you want to
have stability within your organization, you look at some of
the best around the OHL. They have the same coaches,
the same management year in and year out, and they
can be doing it for years.

Speaker 3 (01:08:09):
They've been doing it for years.

Speaker 5 (01:08:11):
That's why people get raises because they've been doing it
for years. They get good at it, they understand what
their job is. This team has a bunch of first
year employees. That's what we're looking at. We're looking at
a ton of guys that have no idea. It's it's
like everyone got laid off and we brought in seventeen

(01:08:34):
new guys to do jobs that didn't.

Speaker 3 (01:08:36):
Exist last year. That's what it is.

Speaker 5 (01:08:39):
And then the guys who had jobs here last year
are now doing different jobs. Everybody's doing something new this year.
So I think, you know, that's something for us to remember.
It's something that the fan base needs to remember. It's
something that I'm going to you know, I'm taking a
step back, you know now that the month is over
and we're kind of out of the weeds and we
can stop worrying about, well, what did they lose by

(01:09:01):
this week? Like, the big picture is that this team
has the talent, they have the coaching. It's gonna come.
It's gonna come. They just have to figure it out.
They got to figure it out. It's it's a team
that probably, you know, one of the only teams that
was gutted the way that they were following last season.

(01:09:22):
You know, we can talk about the NCAA and how
team's last players. This team completely changed general manager down
to the guy that runs the concession stands like, it's
a complete different look and it's gonna take time for
them to build that familiarity.

Speaker 6 (01:09:38):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (01:09:38):
And the roster turnover is something that I don't think
people realize how how large the roster turnover was from
last season to this season. So again, they'll continue to
work through that process and hopefully, you know, better days
are to come for the holiday spirit, in the holiday
spirit with it being December, coming up here in the
month of December. But Christian, let's go to your first

(01:10:00):
scouting segment with Simmons right here, Yes, podcasts, and I'm
pulling it up for you guys here on the video version.
But if you guys are following along in the audio
or on the audio version, excuse me, Christian will kind
of go through it for you.

Speaker 3 (01:10:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:10:13):
So this is something that I came up with about
a week ago. I ran it by Brandon thought it
was kind of an interesting idea. So we're going to
start by me getting physically prepared. I'm going to put
on my scouting glasses all right, for everybody at home
and on the video platform. These are my scouting optics,

(01:10:33):
all right. This is Christian the scout. This is Christian
the podcaster. This guy with the shades on, this is
Simmons the scout. All right, So from now on we'll
probably do this maybe quarterly or you know, throughout the year,
we'll kind of take a look, we'll check in on
these guys. Now, this is not going any further back

(01:10:56):
than the twenty twenty five Ohl drafts because we all
know what happened last year.

Speaker 3 (01:11:00):
Year.

Speaker 5 (01:11:01):
None of the twenty twenty four prospects are with the
organization anymore. So this is strictly a twenty twenty five
draft outlook the guys that were picked under Ryerson Edgar.
So we got four that we picked up on here,
Caden Bell, Michael Tang, Connor.

Speaker 3 (01:11:19):
Hafner, and Tyler Lee. So we'll go through them one
by one.

Speaker 5 (01:11:23):
I just wanted to give you guys an idea of
what could be. We were talking about it on the
show earlier, the roster turnover, and in that spirit, I figured,
let's see what the turnover could look like next year
and what kind of holes these guys could fill. And
we'll start with Caden Bell. We talked a little bit
about the top four defenseman. What does this team need?

(01:11:44):
They need maybe a power play quarterback. That's Caden Bell.
All right, we'll take a look at this guy here.
Drafted in the third round, forty ninth overall. He was
the second pick in the twenty twenty five OHL Draft
of the Niger Ice Dogs. They actually didn't have a
second rounder. They had the first round and then third
round pick when they took Cayden Bell. He's absolutely torching
the Greater Ontario Hockey League right now, which is the

(01:12:06):
Junior B ranks. Currently with the Saint Catharines Falcons. He's
got twenty seven points in twenty five games, nine goals
so far on the season, and he's got a fantastic
range on the blue line. I've seen him play countless
times this season. He brings some confidence and some comfortability
at the blue line. He's got a fantastic shot and

(01:12:29):
great vision cross ice. He's got to get a little faster.
I've talked about this on this show and you know
on other shows as well. He needs to get faster
physically and mentally when it comes to making decisions. He's
got to get crisper and faster. But he has the
potential to potentially next year slide in. He could be
a top four guy on this team. If he has

(01:12:49):
another off season of development, I could see him being
a huge part of this defensive course.

Speaker 3 (01:12:55):
So that's Cayden Bell. Get to throw the name sorry
a right shot too, in a right shot as well.

Speaker 5 (01:13:01):
Very appealing for a team that's basically got a bunch
of lefties except for Ryisenecker, so they could use an
extra righty. So get to know the name in the face.
He will most likely be around next season.

Speaker 6 (01:13:13):
He's one Project of the Week as well. A couple
weeks ago.

Speaker 5 (01:13:16):
Just wanted to Yes he did, and he's in the
conversation for a Rookie of the Year, so we'll see
how things developed there.

Speaker 3 (01:13:23):
And he's playing for a really great team in Saint Catharines.

Speaker 5 (01:13:25):
They're up at the top of the Eastern Conference and
they continue to pace it. But yeah, that's Caden Bell.
The next pick was Michael Tank, Drafted in the fourth round.
He was the seventy eighth overall selection for the Niagara
Ice Dogs. He's currently playing in the UCHL USHL excuse me,
with the Madison Capitals. Has ten points in sixteen games

(01:13:47):
played in that U seventeen World Hockey Challenge as well
against Ryerson Edgar had a bronze medal with Team USA.
Just had the one point in four games. But this
guy knows how to score, and he did a ton
of that in U sixteen. He played with the Toronto
Titans in his draft year, had one hundred and twenty
eight points in seventy four games. He scored fifty two goals.

(01:14:11):
This guy knows how to score. Harvard University agrees he's
committed to Harvard for the twenty twenty seven season, So
there's a good chance we see him in a Naigarace
Dog's uniform next year. But he'll be one of those
guys that's not around for a ton of time. But
I could see him helping that bottom six next season,
being a third maybe second line fringe guy, depending how

(01:14:32):
things look next year. Of course, you know, with all
the variables, you know, Rollbrick, you know, we'll see what
ends up happening with him. Kevin he Ethan Zodereriley Patterson
could very well be moving on. So I could see
Michael Tang, you know, sliding into that top six as
a scorer, or in that bottom six as somebody who brings,
you know, a little bit of size, you know, six
feet tall, one hundred and sixty five pounds. He's got

(01:14:53):
a little bit of size to him and some bite.
Also a right shot as well, so we'll see what
happens there. Another yes, and he's a very smart young man.
He's a very very smart young man, and that smarts
applies to the hockey side of things as well. He
plays the game with incredible intelligence, so could be a
huge part of.

Speaker 3 (01:15:13):
This team next year.

Speaker 5 (01:15:14):
So those are the two top guys, Caden Bell and
Michael Tang. Then we got a goaltender, Connor Haffner fifth
round selection, ninety fifth overall, a sought after young goalie.
He was also taken in the Central Canada Hockey League
Draft twenty second overall in twenty twenty five. Currently playing
in the OJHL with the Burlington Cougars, and he's cleaning house.

Speaker 3 (01:15:33):
He's got an eight four to.

Speaker 5 (01:15:35):
Two record, two eight seven goals against average in a
nine to two one save percentage. He is lighting it
up down there, six foot three, one hundred and seventy
five pounds left catch six' three.

Speaker 3 (01:15:47):
Like he's he's a big.

Speaker 10 (01:15:49):
Boy.

Speaker 5 (01:15:50):
Uh he knows how to play and With Charlie robertson, potentially,
well not potentially out of the picture next season in
his overage, Year Connor hafner could be a massive part
of this team next, season either in a starting role
or as the. Backup BUT i See Connor haffner a
part of this team next. Season and then, Finally Tyler
lee sixth, rounder played With Caden bell in Don, mills

(01:16:13):
so this for me is. Interesting those two know each
other very very. WELL i see them playing together next.
Season currently playing with The Pellham panthers in The Greater
Ontario Hockey, league has a respectable rate of production seventeen
points in twenty two. Games nothing, crazy you, know not
freaking out about. That but you, know he's playing on
a team.

Speaker 3 (01:16:33):
With a lot of.

Speaker 5 (01:16:34):
Depth you, know he's playing a different. Role he's not
exactly their go to score for The Pellham panthers this.
Season there's some guys that are a little bit older
than him that are looking to make a jump in their.
Career so he's not, playing you, know top, minutes but
he's still producing and he's starting to learn the defensive
side of the. Game a little bit, smaller not exactly
the size you're looking for in the. Ohl it needs

(01:16:55):
to put on some muscle at five to eight one
hundred and fifty nine, pounds but he's an incredible. Scale
we saw him in training camp this. Year he's one
of my. PICKS i thought he looked pretty good AND
i think if he continues to, develop maybe build some,
muscle he could be joining his former teammate In Caden
bell next season with An igreis. Dog so those are
my four to keep an eye. On they're all doing

(01:17:17):
very very, well So simmons the scout is very happy
with the, progression and we'll make sure to keep you
guys updated on.

Speaker 1 (01:17:24):
Those it helps that two of those guys you mentioned
are in THE, gohl which you obviously do some play
by play in that, league so you get to get
an extra eye on those guys a little.

Speaker 5 (01:17:34):
Bit, yes for. Sure Connor hafner And Michael tang were
a little. Tougher actually had to do some real. Reading
those glasses came in, handy you, KNOW i had to
actually go and do some research on these. Guys but,
Yeah Tyler lee And Caiden BELL i see on a weekly,
basis SO i know what's going on with those. Guys
AND i would say that you, know as teammates guys
that know each other very well and are both progressing.

(01:17:55):
Well we could see them here as.

Speaker 3 (01:17:56):
Well. Exciting the future is.

Speaker 5 (01:17:59):
Bright i'm In, niagara SO i wanted to just spotlight
that that's a new segment that we're, adding and there's
gonna be plenty more to. Come BUT i thought that
that was something worth mentioning here at the. Half well
about the third the third way point of the, season.

Speaker 1 (01:18:14):
Great monthly, segment the first one scouting With, simmons some
updates for you Nag Ice dogs junkies out there that
want to know how some of their top prospects are.
Doing that we could see Wearing Ice dog jerseys in
the near, future maybe next year or the year after.
That So, christian as we wrap, up you, know we're
looking up up At december, now and it doesn't get

(01:18:37):
any easier for The Ice. Dogs as you can see
up on the video version for you guys listening on.
YouTube they Got brampton this, week a divisional. Game brampton
plays very hard even though they don't really have a
lot of top. Stars so The Ice dogs we'll have
to have back to back really Solid Central division matchups
Against brampton and Then North bay and then they've got
The London nights coming, In Barry North bay, Again Peterborough

(01:18:58):
flint who's on an eleven game winning, streak which is
crazy to think. About sarny is in Town brampton. Again
then they've Got brampton back to. Back so they Play
brampton three times this month within the, division and then
they Get oshawa on The New Year's eve. Game but
again a lot of opportunity here if The Ice dogs
can put together a sixty minute effort to pick up

(01:19:19):
some points this month and really start to claw back
up The Eastern conference standings against teams that they're.

Speaker 6 (01:19:23):
Chasing, Yep Barry North.

Speaker 5 (01:19:26):
Bay they Play North bay twice in the next couple of,
weeks they Play barry as.

Speaker 3 (01:19:30):

Speaker 5 (01:19:31):
Those you, know you're trying to chase down both of,
them you, know in your, division And barry.

Speaker 3 (01:19:37):
