Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to the Armchair GM Sports Network.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Welcome to another episode of the Ohl in sixty podcast.
I'm Reiche Domania along with Colin Ward, and we are
well into the new OHL season. I'd say pretty well.
Every team in Ottawa Auto has only played four games.
That's an interesting start to their schedule. But everywhere else
is like five mostly six. There's a seven and an
(01:21):
eight thrown in there as well, but for seventeen teams,
we are well into the new season. Ottawa they'll catch
up eventually, we have. We looked at their schedule earlier today.
It's unique, interesting, unique. Yeah, that's a yeah, it'll be ah,
(01:41):
it'll be a fun conversation. We're gonna talk about them
a little bit later on. But we appreciate you tuning
in every single week, whether you're watching us on the
Armchair GM Sports Network, whether you're listening on whatever audio
platform you love to listen to podcasts on. We do
appreciate it every single week, and we will throw the
topics up for you for people watching, for people listening,
of course, we'll read them out and you can listen
(02:04):
to them. But yeah, we're we're gonna go through some
headlines from from this last week. That's how we've started
every single show. Four trades happened between last week and
this week, so that's a big topic of conversation. To
kick off the show. Captains continue to be named around
the Ontario Hockey League. Well, we'll discuss that Players of
(02:25):
the Week were announced on Monday too. Wins are in
Ottawa currently two of the top dogs or a top
dog I should say, in each of their conferences. We'll
discuss both of those teams and their starts. Wins are
losing for the first time this season. In Owen Sound
on Sunday, Ottawa continues to roll. They're four and oh
ye heading into this week's action. Yeah yeah, big time,
(02:50):
eh Owen Sound. We're gonna continue the conversation on them
goaltenders setting records that you wouldn't think would be.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
News, but it is. Producer George. Yeah, he's uh put
him on the power.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Play quarterback is technically he is if he's on the ice.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Here's the play. Here's here's the new drop off play.
Everyone go up almost like a flying v. It's just
like you're throwing up a hell Mary a sauce one
right up the middle, which you're told not to do
as a goalie. But oh well, don't coaches just look
away and then you just sauce one right up the middle,
right on the tape, breakout pass easy, no need for
the drop off. Everyone stay up at the blue line.
(03:32):
Let's have a day.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Pushed her off, or or because you mentioned the flying
V I was gonna bring this up anyways, you uh,
Carter George skates up to center or you think it's
Carter George, it's actually rush Russ Tyler and he lets
the knuckle puck go from center ice, so creates some
(03:55):
offense on the power play from the goaltender. Oh yeah,
oh yeah, yeah, that'd be wild.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yeah, but yeah, yeah there.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
I mean, Owen Sound is gonna miss Kaprowski for a
game or did that take place already? I could be
wrong on that. Or Bedkowski, Sorry, David Bedkowski is gonna
miss one game. He'll be back on October eleventh, So yeah,
that will be coming up this weekend. But so we'll
touch on Owen Sound. They continue to roll early on
in the year, and then the power rankings have come
out and it's long enough into the season we're gonna
(04:31):
start doing our top five as we usually do to
round out every show. Oh, we're gonna get that going
because we feel like it's pointless to do it after
well two or three weeks, so we'll do it this
week to do it, and it'll pretty well be the
rest of the rest of the year when when we
get to it. So let's uh, let's start with the
(04:51):
headlines around the Ontario Hockey League. There have been a
number of trades since we last spoke. I'll kind of
list them off here and then calling we can kind
of go through them one on one if we want to,
or kind of what we overall think about some of
these moves. But starting with the Peterborough Petz, they send
Liam Lads to Sudbury for a fifth rounder in twenty
twenty seven. Funny enough, it's a Peterborough fifth rounder in
(05:14):
twenty twenty seven, so they get that pick back. The
Branford Bulldogs sending Joshua Avery to the Brampton Steelheads. He
made an immediate impact in their lineup in his first game,
collecting a goal and an assist. He goes to Brampton
for Brampton's third rounder in twenty twenty nine and Brampton's
fifth rounder in twenty twenty nine. I'm interested to know
(05:36):
how long those picks stay with the Branford Bulldogs. Moving forward,
the North Bay Battalion send Charlie o'rourck to to Sarnia
for Sarnia's sixth rounder in twenty twenty nine, and then
on Monday, Zach Wilson going from North Bay to Saginaw
for Saganaw's twelfth rounder in twenty and twenty six. Colin
(05:56):
I would say the two big ones, big is and names,
not necessarily the amount that was moved would be Liam
Ladds to Sudbury and then Joshua Avery to the Brampton Steelheads.
Let's start with Liam Ladds. Uh, you know Peterborough again,
a team that is trying to be on the upward,
(06:17):
trying to move up, trying to be better, they move
lads to Sudbury. And Sudbury, yes, they don't have a
couple of key players right now, but they're expected to
be back. We don't have timelines. We're not gonna speculate
when they're gonna be back either. But Liam Ladds goes
up to Sudbury and that should be an immediate, immediate
(06:39):
help to the Sudbury Wolves.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Yeah, it should. You know, they need it ready on
the on the back end, that always helps for them.
He's young, six two one seventy four, moves well, lads.
He gets an opportunity in Sudbury for sure to play
right away. You would imagine he's gonna be there. He's
gonna be up, You're echelon on their defensive core. Like
he's gonna log a lot of minutes for them. It's
a it's a big get. He's never really been a
(07:01):
high point guy. You go back to last year fourteen
and sixty three, but I mean first full season in
the league. This year, he's we'll see what happens. But
I like the deal for Sudbury. Then you did make
something happen. We talked about it on the last couple
of weeks about Sudbury and I, you know, and I
feel bad. You're always beating on Sudbury Wolves fans. It's
not that I'm beating on you. I just beat on
(07:22):
the direction the team goes. We didn't agree with some
of the decisions that were made going back to last
year on January tenth, for instance, But this I like
this movie. You know, it's an easy it's what is
it right, You're just giving back a fifth to the
place that already had the fifth originally before you received it.
So I think that I think it's a good deal
(07:43):
for Sudbury. You get that opportunity, lads gets a chance
to play, you know, Peterborough, to get Cameron back, to
get guys back on their back end. We'll see what
happens with them. I just think that get an opportunity
to play in Sudbury. He's gonna play a lot of
minutes and lads, it's gonna help you develop. And I
just think that's a good over both sides in Sudbury.
I mean, hey, they needed defense, right they Their defense
(08:03):
can stop a nosebleed at times this so far this year.
So hopefully that they can keep getting better and hopefully
this helps them. I'm intrigued to see them firsthand this weekend,
I really am. I think they're gonna come out a
lot harder this weekend than weekends passed. Now that this
is kind of their team. You know, they still have
guys out, but this is kind of their team. Yeah,
in their direction, They're going this is it. So let's
(08:26):
see what happens.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
And it's another three and three upcoming for the Sudbury
Wolves as well, too early on for them, so that'll
be another challenge, to say the least, because this time
instead of going winsor Sarnia or was it London Sarnia.
I think it was London Sarnia and that anyways, Western
(08:48):
Conference and then to Branford, this time it's Branford to
Irian Saint Catharine's afterwards.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
So it's a.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Tough couple of three. Reason for the Sudbury Wolves are
getting tested early, still looking for that first win of
the season, so expect lads to yeah to be a
hopefully be a difference maker for them moving forward. And
then Joshua Avery going to Brampton for a couple of picks.
I mentioned it from the Branford side. I have a
hard time seeing those picks staying in Branford for much longer,
(09:21):
obviously unless the deal doesn't work out and they end
up keeping them. But Joshua Avery goes to the Brampton Steelheads,
like I said, a goal in and assist in his
first games as a Steelhead, and it's a situation we
are talking about this on the dodcast this week, calling that.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
He is.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
There's just no room for him in Branford. A guy
that is is in his third year in the Ontario
Hockey League. You know, at that point you want to
start seeing more consistent time in the top six. Not
like you're gonna get regular time, but he's looking for
a little bit more consistency in a top six role
and it's just not there this year for the Branford Bulldogs, right.
(10:00):
It's it's something that the team just said, hey, we
can't guarantee it, you know, and they might have talked
about potentially moving him. Maybe he wanted to get into
that role. Who knows, We don't know, but but Avery
will consistently play in the top six in Brampton. I
expect him to play in the top six in Brampton
because he does have some talent. He had a really
(10:21):
good look at at rookie Camp development camp for the
for the Columbus Blue Jackets and we heard nothing but
good things from them about what he did. So he
can go to Brampton. He can play a regular role
and uh and contribute offensively quite a bit for the Steelheads.
He's gonna play a high in the lineup role for them,
and that's gonna be huge. I mean, josh Avery dictates
the Ford check kind of he's on there. He's a
(10:42):
big attack players get off the rush.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
He's fast. He's improved a lot on his skating sert
the summer. I mean, he's always good skater. I'm going
back to his draft when the Bulldoge Draft and I
remember chatting with him when he came into the facility
for the first time and talking to Matt Turk about
him in the former Bulldogs general manager, and you talk
to him about josh Avery, and Josh Avery ran their
power play in that Minor Pete's team. You know, he
(11:04):
was a big offensive threat for the Pietz in that
minor Pietz program. In his draft year, I mean the
Bulldogs were excited to get him in the third round
when they did. I mean, it was kind of a
surprise for when he came into the facility that he
was a that he was available. He's been I mean,
he never really never had the opportunities in Branford. He's
been getting the opportunities that he was in. He was
(11:24):
really getting the face off thought, I think this is
a good move for Branton. I really do. I think
Josh Avery and Branton is gonna be really good. But
I spoke with general manager of the Bulldoze, Spencer Hymen,
about the deal and he mentioned about it's just one
of those deals where guys played good guys to camp
just improved a lot, I mean, and we talked about
it earlier on the dodcast at Lane Gallaher for instance,
at Oshawa he that kid last year. I mean, the
(11:48):
growth that he put on throughout the summer between last
year and this year is phenomenal. And it's one of
the best parts about covering the Ontario Hockey League when
we see guys come into every camp, every team. There's
guys that come into camp that leave the previous season
and then they come in a different person's like, oh
who are you? Oh yeah, hey, nice to see it. Lane.
That's kind of laying gallery for the Bulldogs. He's become
(12:09):
that fourth line center. He's a staple in there. And
Josh Avery's kind of too good to be a fourth
line center. I mean, he's an older he's a bid
to older player now in the Atario Hockey League. He's
gonna go to Brampton, He's gonna dictate their rush. He's
gonna be really getting the Richmond system. I'm excited to
see what he can do. I think he's gonna be
a big point guy for them. It might be one
of those deals down the road where Hey, Bulldogs is
probably gonna wish say, hey, maybe we should have got
one one more pick, maybe a second as a conditional.
(12:32):
That's how good I can see this deal working out
for Brampton. I think this is a really good deal
for the Brampton steel Huts. I love everything about Josh
Avery's game. I think he I think he can be
physical when he has to. He's shown this year so
far that he can put the puck in the back
to that and make place him on the rush. I mean,
that's that's where he's gonna make his money. He's so
good on the rush in the dots. If he becomes
a pro in the faceoff dot, he's gonna be a
(12:53):
professional hockey player just because guys, you're looking for centers
that can win draws at any given moment, and that's
what Josh Avery can do for the Brampton Steelhead I'm
really excited to see what they can do. They got
a worker there, for sure. The Skiellheads already worked hard
this year, he's just gonna add to it. So it's
gonna be exciting to see what he can do. UH.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Next up, Charlie L. Rock going to UH to Sarnia, Colin.
What are the sting getting in in miss de La Rock.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Get a goal? Yeah, you're you're getting a guy that
I think that you didn't get the opportunity to play
net And obviously Mike McIver is gonna be the guy
in North Bay. He's going to be. He's the guy
for North Bay. And I think he's most underrated goalton
in the Antario Hockey THAU this year. I think right
away when you go to o waitl goalies, you think
about the Georgias, you think about the Leaners, you think
(13:38):
about all these stars. But Mike mcciver last year for
North Bay, including in the playoffs, how good he was
for them in the postseason. In those five games for
North Bay in the playoffs, he was unbelievable for them.
He was their MVP back there. And I think that
this is the opportunity now for North Bay. You're making
your ross, you have your goaltending situation being what it is.
La Rock's name came available and for the things you
(13:58):
give them an opportunity, right, aren't you get the opportunity.
You get a chance to play every night and every
other night that is, and you get the chance to
play to feel the ice little more, you don't get cold.
It's a good spot for both sides. It's a really
good opportunity. Though for la Rock it also. I mean,
his numbers are what they are, but he hasn't shown
(14:18):
bad like if you watch him play, like in person,
he saw him a couple of times. Like when you
watch him play like he moves well and he moves
well in the net, and like I think this could
be a good move. I really do like all these
moves man, looking back at it, like you think about
lads for a fifth, what happens if Ladds goes to
what happens if he goes to Sudbury and becomes nat
(14:39):
like and gets the opportunity, gets to play regular minutes,
And it's like Sudbury just got a good player for
a fifth after they give up all that last year
for guys like Noah Roberts. No offense to Noah Roberts.
He's playing his best hockey of his ohl career right
now with on one sound but you could have had
that for just a fifth, right, So Josh Avery and Brampton,
(14:59):
like I just mentioned, I think that could be a
really good deal. I think it could be down the
road where Bulldogs people could wish that, Hey, I wish
I got one more pick maybe or a conditional pick,
just because of how good that could work out for Brampton.
And I just think this one, I mean, why not?
Why not? Right? Like, if you're sorry, you have the
leverage in the deal, right, you know North Bay has
to make the trade. You have the leverage there. Why
(15:21):
not do it? So it's I'm excited to see what
can happen here. It's so intriguing to watch these trades
because every single season we see multiple of these trades
that turn out to be you gave all that for that,
Like I mean, heck, not to get too Branford on us,
sorry for non Branford fans, but like for us personally.
You know, with the Bulldogs, we see it all the time.
(15:42):
Owen protts for no VanVleet. We would did that one
for one, I think nine I think twenty or nineteen
and twenty general managers we did that deal one for one.
I think looking back at it right, like maybe this
is the one. So I'm excited to see what can happen.
And I think this one, I mean, look at Costanzo
going to Windsor like he's gonna be in goal to
end of the year candidation for how good he's been.
(16:04):
So like, I just think that I'm excited to see
what can happen. I love these types of trades are
the nothing trades at time, quote unquote the nothing trades,
But these are the trades that you love to consume
because you pay attention to him and what happens if
it turns into something, that's what wins you GM of
the Year and what makes you not GM of the
Year the opposite of GM of the Year. If you're
(16:25):
able to pull these trades, that's that's doing your job
as a general manager. And I'm really excited to see
how this can happen. I like, I just think it
could be really cool, Like if it turns in to
be something that's like, well, look at this, like that
gives you GM of the Year candidates in my books.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Yeah, yeah, And I mean who knows about this next
one with mister Wilson, Zach Wilson going to the Saganaw
spirit from the North Bay battalion as well. We mentioned
about Joshua Avery and he's getting moved essentially because there's
no room for him and the role he wanted to play.
Sort of the same situation here with Wilson and in
North Bay they've got eight roster defenseman. Yeah, you know,
(17:05):
eventually guys aren't gonna wanna be there anymore if they're
sitting in the press box right And this might be
that situation where you've got a guy who's an eighteen
year old. First of all, for Saganaw, you're getting a
dude that's six six. I want that on my blue
line too, you know. But also a guy that plays physical,
plays hard, and and for Saganaw, you know they're in
(17:28):
a they're in an interesting spot right now because they
did I wouldn't say they really sold last year. You know,
they they were still a competitive team. They made moves
to make themselves competitive.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
But but then this year Nissa is an on an
opening night roster in San Jose and you knew that
was I don't know, it's fifty to fifty too low,
maybe seventy thirty chance that he's on San Jose compared
to coming back to saganaw So again, as much as
I love Winsors defense and the fact that they've got
one dude under six feet on their defense, I think
(18:02):
that's awesome. Uh, Sagana is getting that with with Wilson
standing six to six.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
Yeah. I like that about North Pay too. They got
some big guys. They got some luck there with the
NCAA agreement coming their way. They got some big time
American players coming in here that are big defense, and
we saw that in the postseason last year too. Recently,
those guys they got some big defense. I mean, obviously
the numbers are what they are with Wilson, but he
can have an opportunity in Sagana if it's and it's
one of those teams where who knows what happens with
(18:29):
correct Like you know these situations here like for them
like yeah, six six left handed defenseman like that at
one eighty seven, who knows by the end of the year,
like where he's at shape wise, But like you like
those guys, they they really clog up spaces, and I
think it's worth it taking that risk. I mean, it's
nothing really gave up for it, right, Like for Saganaw
(18:51):
And that could be one of those moves I just mentioned,
Like it could be one of those moves where that's
a Winsy GM of the year, Like it could be
a robbery type deal. On the Saganaw standpoint, North Bay
kind of had to make the move, right. You can't
have a guy at six six like that. Obviously he's
gonna be a defensive defenseman for North What was a
defensive defenseman for North Bay? You're not expecting him to
light up the score sheet, but that's a defenseman. And
(19:12):
I think that when you have that opportunity and you
make the move, you don't have leverage in the deal
of your North Bay. And for Saganaw, it's a perfect
type deal. Right, They're a team that's kind of in
the middle of the road. What are they are? They
gonna be good this year? They're gonna be bad this year?
What are what is Saganaw? Right? Like, So, I think
that's gonna be the type of move that you got
to make right now to fill out your roster. See
what you got and then let's see what happens. Right,
It gives you a chance to make the dance. That's
(19:33):
all you gotta do. Absolutely. Yeah, And I mean I
had mentioned Michael Mysa's name, so let's let's get right
to it. A couple of big Ohlers on on San
Jose's opening night roster. That includes Sam Dickinson as well
as as Michael Misa. Like I said, but those are
(19:54):
two names. Dickinson I think was the favorite around the
OHL media members for Defenseman of the Year. He'll obviously
start the season with San Jose. Misa again, like I said,
I would say there was a better chance he's on
San Jose than Sagana this year. Again, who really knows,
but what we're seeing them in the TiAl to start
(20:14):
the year, and who knows what their chances are to
come back, right, you get your nine games to to see. Yeah,
not bad, ah, not a bad good those good BC.
I know you like the Sharks inside, they're like those
jerseys look good, they look great.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Eh yeah, I mean the top five oh yeah, five
the NHL for those.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
Jersey. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Only thing though, their center ice logo sucks. It's so bad.
Oh my god. They tried to do something cool and
it looks terrible. San Jose center ice logo. If you
have a chance, go look it up. I think it
looks like crap. Just just my personal opinion, but they
they kind of tried to recreate, not recreate because they
didn't win the Stanley Cup and they've never won a
Stanley Cups. But like the Florida Panthers do with the
(21:02):
Stanley Cup inside of the cup at center ice, or
you see all these teams that are filling in their
center ice with with colors now and the Wings obviously
going back to hockey town with the hundred for their
hundredth anniversary. It looks sick. Montreal, I know, went with
the full full circle. I think Ottawa has the full
circle as well. It could be wrong, but I think Autaway.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Slogan's going black and white celebrate their last Cup in
sixty seven. Sorry, Leaf fans had to get that. You know,
it's all jokes.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
Sounds really though starting back.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
But no, this is this is cool. And again, as
much as the London Knights want Sam Dickinson to come back,
as much as the Segon of Spirit want Michael Misa
to come back, Jet Luchenko is starting the year with
the Philadelphia Flyers. You know, the ultimate goal, and I've
said this numerous times, your ultimate goal is to get
these guys to the NHL. If they're drafted and they
(21:58):
get sent back to you, how do you get them
to be in NHL or within a year or two.
And that's exactly what the London Knights did, That's exactly
what the Saganaw Spirit did with Misa.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
So yes, it sucks.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
You might sell a few more tickets if Mesa's in
the building or if Dickinson's in the building. But at
the same time, this is something you can add to
your resume as a franchise. You can add to your
spirit and Knights alum in the NHL wall if you've
got one of those, which I know most maybe not most,
(22:31):
but I know some teams have it. Niagara's actually looks
really cool in that one hallway. I will I will
say that I do like the way Niagara has it
set up. But that's what you can put on your
resume that you helped Mesa get to the NHL, you
helped Dickinson get to the NHL, Glass Storm helped Luchenko
get to the NHL. Right, that's what you can put
on your on your resume and on your wall up
(22:52):
up in your building. So yes, it sucks, But at
the same time. You want to see these guys tharrive
at the next level.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
Yeah, and you get the opportunity, right, like that's all.
Like these guys are too good right now, like back
at Seneca with Anahein Yeah you know that early like
you can't like you know, and that's Michael Lisa and
BC you were what were you saying about Misa? Where
he's gonna start?
Speaker 1 (23:15):
Can you guys hear me?
Speaker 3 (23:16):
Yep? We got you?
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Does Reese got me?
Speaker 3 (23:19):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (23:20):
I don't think Greece can hear me?
Speaker 3 (23:23):
Well?
Speaker 1 (23:24):
Where's he starting second line with the Foley and Eckland.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
Okay, that's not bad, that's not too bad. You're here.
I don't got Brandon at all. Okay, well he's starting
with he's starting with Akla Ekland and to Foley. BC
was saying, So we'll figure that out break, But I
got you if you're good. But that's not bad to
(23:49):
start out on the second line, get the opportunity, Like
that's pretty good. I mean, you kind of gotta throw
guys out in the you got you gotta give them
the chance, right you draft them second overall, you kind
of gott to play them, So I like.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Exactly, like and and all of these franchise. Yeah, yeah,
like all of these franchise San Jose to be blunt,
they're gonna suck again. They are, and I'm gonna suck.
I think they're gonna be fun. Like you, why not
put them in those roles. There's no reason not to.
You're not gonna sho have a guy on the fourth line.
What's the point of that, You're gonna suck anyways, throw
(24:24):
from the top six.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
Who cares? Can you imagine San Jose ends up winning
the lottery and gets McKenna bruh, McKenna celebrity smith Misa, Wow,
I know BC heard that one, but I just think
that would be wild. So I think that. I think
with San Jose, they're gonna be fun to watch, even
if they're not good, Like, they're gonna be fun to watch.
That's kind of exciting. Uh, sharks need to see this
(24:48):
youth movement. But no, it's nice to see these guys
in the O get the jump. A lot of guys
like obviously Matthew Schaeffer really so. But Matthew Schaeffer, I
know it's not up on here, but I want to
touch on that Reece. Matthew Shaeffer has done instead all
the right things on Long Island. Everything he's done has
been right right now. Like I like his quote that
(25:11):
he had the media that started preseason hockey when he
mentioned about when he got asked, are you willing to
play on like this to be like the six defenseman,
you know, be the extra defenseman? He goes, yeah, I
want to play the NHL, Like I'm willing to do
whatever helps my team. Like that's the stuff you want
to hear. And obviously you know the family well Reese,
like with his brother in Niagara, Like that's pretty cool
(25:35):
to see what Matthew Shaeffer has done with the Islanders
right away his number one overall pick. The impact he
has had on them, even just in camp has been incredible.
And you gotta be pumped for Shaeffer. I mean you
see the little shootout goal that he had there in
the preseason, like yep, wow. Like the I'm very intrigued
to see what he does for the Islanders this year
in a full season because like it's unfortunate, like to
(25:58):
be honest, in person, like we're us with the Bulldaye.
You only get to see him once a year in
person at home once in the EIE. But it's like,
it's unfortunate because we only got to see this guy
play like once once or twice I guess out of
the three, Like it's unfortunate. But Schaeffer like man the
times we did see him play, Like the impact he
had on the ice every single shift, I mean every
(26:18):
time you watch him play on Flow Hockey now formerly
CHL TV, and you watch him play, I mean every
time he's on the ice, he makes an impact that
I can't wait. With that skating ability, he's gonna be
so good with the Islanders. It'll be interesting to see
what he's like in that system though, right they're not
a big offensive system, the Islanders. They're defensive first, and
I know he's a defensive. Yeah he's a defenseman, but
(26:38):
he can contribute to offense. And you can probably run
your power play week one for you. By by November December,
he's gonna be running their power play for the Islanders.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, And again I don't expect anything out
of the Islanders this year, so why not, Like, there's
no reason not to put him there, not to say
that's going to it'll interest him get to be a
numbnumber one quicker, but if you know, yeah, he might
start as a sixth defenseman, but if you can put
him in a position to succeed and potentially be your
(27:09):
third best defenseman by the end of the year, then
then that's a that's a win.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Right again.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
I I don't expect the Islanders to do a ton
of this year in the in the NHL, but you
know you've got your number one overall stud put him
in a position to succeed. Yes, it may take time.
You might not see him be the fifth or fourth
defenseman until March, but who cares. He wants to play
in the NHL. Give him the shout to play in
the NHL and learn at the NHL level. Right There's
(27:36):
you can only learn so much whether you're playing in junior,
whether you're playing in the American Hockey League. And a
lot of times top five top ten picks might not
see the American Hockey League. But the best way to
learn how to play in the NHL is play in
the NHL. And I think Schaeffer is a prime example
of that. Because he's missed so much time, I wouldn't
(28:00):
say he got the full junior experience he did. Don't
get me wrong. But he didn't play a full season
in the Ontario Hockey League, right, And and that's the
part that also sucks. And yes we speak here on
the podcast about it, but as a fan of the
Ontario Hockey League, you kind of wanted him to play
a full season, just you wanted to be greedy to
(28:21):
see him play. Even more so, again, he's gonna learn
how to play in the NHL. In the NHL, that's
the way the Islanders are gonna see it.
Speaker 3 (28:29):
I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
I'm not sure this is a nine games let's go
back to eerie. I think he is their sixth defenseman
all season long.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
You know, I wonder I would love him to play
with a veteran defenseman who's a stay at home defense in.
The Islanders have a lot of those guys. I would
love to see him on that spot where he has
a chance to play his game, because you gotta play
his game. He gonna call him up to be the guy,
to be a guy, like to be a contributor. You
drafted him one first overall, but it's one of the things,
and like other than Connor McDavid, because McDavid, I mean,
(28:57):
in my lifetime, is the best player I've ever seen
in the Interio Hockey League. I mean there's a lot
of good ones for sure, but mc connor y David
in my lifetime, like it's McDavid, But I just think
that and John Tavaris had that impact to Oshawa, London,
Taylor Hall, Tyler SEGM. But the one thing is when
these guys and they always I always, it always intrigues me.
And and you always hear from coaches from general managers
(29:20):
around the NHL and the Antario Hockey League when the
guy graduates out of out of major junior and we
always hear the same thing. Where in player development, every
player who makes and we've had so many guys make
the NHL this year we out to camp for the
first time just being drafted. But every player that's in
the Antario Hockey League that makes the NHL, like this
(29:41):
is elite. They are elite players. They have the puck
all game long, it's their puck. They control the game rightly.
So what happens when they go to the pros they
get to learn to play without the puck. How you
retrieve pucks on your own. You know, like a lot
of times you see guys in the Antario Hockey League
that are elite puck possession players, but you know, you
(30:03):
just can't figure it out at the next level. Guys
are so getting Major junior but they just don't transition
to the pros. Well, you got to learn how to
play without the puck. And I think that's one of
the big things that I'm intrigued about seeing Michael Misa,
who Michael Misa. Every single game he gets in the
goodst goalscoring chance in major junior, he gets multiple good chances.
If he's playing a major junior, he's probably gonna get
like four or five really good chances to score a game.
(30:25):
Like we saw that last year with Nick Lartis. How
many chances did he get a game to score a goal?
Right Like Matthew Schaeffer at the point, you know Matthew Shaffer,
the power play for Eerie would go through Matthew Shaeffer
five on five big crucial situations is going through Matthew
Shaeffer now and even last year last year in the
NDP versse EHL games that was dominated by Matthew Shaeffer.
(30:49):
I remember after the first game in London, all the
media members flocking toward Matthew Shaffer, Matthew Shaeffer, Matthew Shaeffer.
Now it's his time to play without the puck. You know,
you're in your stripes, you're in your keyts. In the
National Hockey League, he's gonna get targeted a little bit.
You know, it's gonna be a thing, like if he's out,
there's a sixth defense and he's gonna play other team's
fourth lines. Like that's that's like, that's gonna get him
(31:11):
in the NHL. I hope, yep. I hope that the
body holds out. I hope he's okay, and obviously hope
for health. But I'm excited to see what he can do.
I really am. I think that he can be a
guy that it's exciting to see how good he is
without the puck, right and like being a defensive defenseman
at times. I mean, it's gonna be interesting how he
evolves in his role and evolves in his game here
(31:33):
in the pro level. I think he's gonna be good.
I hope they let him be a skilled guy and
maybe Patrick maybe in their coaching they have that opportunity
there too. But it'll be exciting to see what he has.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
Yeah, Yeah, I mean for the people watching us on YouTube,
for the people listening, we'll just kind of go over it.
But Brady Martin and Nashville again another team that's not awesome,
I guess is the best way to put it.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
You spend all that money in flop.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
Yeah, it's a pretty wild I starting to think this
Barry Trotz is a GM thing. Isn't as successful as
a Barry Trotz as a head coach type of thing.
Not to say he's done a horrific job. I mean,
I'm not sure about the Scarov move. But but anyways,
and he doesn't have a contract with Luke Evangelista yet,
(32:24):
but Brady Marsa is getting an opportunity with the Prey.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
He is signed to your Evangelista signed Saturday, Friday, Saturday.
I saw there. I saw there.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
Oh for a second, I thought you said he sucked,
but I assume you said he signed.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
No, no, but no.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
I saw him on the inactive list on on Monday
for the Predators. That's why I was like, did it
actually get done?
Speaker 3 (32:53):
I mean, I but it is, it is what it is.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
Anyways, Luke Evangelista show guests not a big deal, but
big ticket fifty goal scorer in the league. But yeah, Brady, uh,
Brady Martin, good for him, good, good for him to
get that opportunity. Wasn't even at the draft for a
great reason.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
So so yeah, yeah, oh.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
God, yeah, yeah, no kidding. One guy who won't be
in the NHL, and this is not to knock him
down by any means, but Ben Danford is back with
the Oshawa Generals.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
How long is he there? Whardy? I think that's something
that's already started starting. Yeah, depends on the Generals play.
Speaker 2 (33:39):
A few I think a few people don't expect him
to be there very long this season, or at least
until the trade deadline. But uh, there are a few
teams out there that could use a defenseman like Ben Danford.
Speaker 3 (33:49):
Mm hmmm. I love his game. I don't know, like,
I don't know what the offense is going to be like,
but I love his game. I think this kid is
going to be a guy that the least kind of
the need to be that defensive defenseman, you know, like
Ben Danford on the like. For instance, you watch Oshawa
kill penalties, it's basically like a five on five When
you watch Joshawa Generals kill penalties, because one side, on
(34:12):
the weak side, it's just Ben Danford and all it
is is Ben Danford blocking shots, getting in lanes. That's
what it is. And I think like he plays man.
He plays quote unquote man hockey already at his age,
and I'm excited to see what he can do. Shout
out to Joel Vanderlan out of the Quinny program as
well Ben Danford. I know he'd want me to say
that one as well with with Danford, but he plays.
(34:34):
He's a good hockey player and I'm excited to see
what he can do here this year. It's a big
year for Danford, right, it's your last year probably in
junior hockey. It's a big gear to see what you
do in your career. So I think it's a big one.
I think he was such a big part of that
Oshwa team. He blocks every shot back that's strown his way.
Every single team that wants to go for it this
year has to be in on Ben Danford. Yeah, such
(34:55):
an effective player. I don't think he's gonna light up
the score sheet. You're not gonna run your power play,
but he's gonna run your the penalty kill and the
penalty kill. In my opinion is a lot more important
than the power play because you got to defend, defend,
defend to win. So I'm excited to see what he
can do in Oswa or wherever it is. But I
think you can start in Oshwa.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
Yeah, all right, let's let's get to a couple of
captains here and then we'll we'll actually hit a quick
break before we come back. But the Sudbury Wolves naming
Nathan Villanov as their team captain. Guys wearing the a's
this season for the Wolves will be Rowan Henderson, Kiaren
Walton and Alex farand obviously Villanov not playing games yet
(35:33):
for the for the Sudbury Wolves, Seattle Krakens sending him
back to Sudbury. However, he is hurt right now. I
haven't heard a timeline on when he'll be back, so
I'm not going to even poke that bear. But congratulations
to Nathan Villanov on being named captain. And that's a
guy that Sudbury would love to have back in the
lineup sooner rather than later. And then the Barry Colts
(35:56):
a couple of Central Division teams naming their their leadership
groups this season. So Cole Bodwin and Kashawan Hison have
been named co captains for the upcoming season. So both
having the C that's something new ish kind of. I
(36:16):
guess it's common in school and in college, but in
the OHL it's.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
London it if Oh yeah, marnern Devorak and right right, yeah,
just very uncommon, but I mean deserving. These two guys
deserve it both. I mean captain of the d captain
of the forwards, I guess, but yeah, yeah, you can
(36:44):
say that. Yeah, I think they're two kind of different players.
You know, like they're both powerful players, for sure, they
have that in common. But like a Tison is that big,
the bright, the bull, you know, like the big smile
of the infections personality. When he walks in a room,
you know, he lights it up, which is huge. And
(37:05):
Bodwin's just a pro. Not that Ahis' is a pro too, obviously,
but like Bodwin's a guy that you know, it feels
like you don't get anything off the ice. He's a professional, like,
you know, like he's a guy that's locked in, he's
dialed into the team. Get options. Yeah, yeah, that's a
tough decision, right, but like.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
I know that's one of the ones where it's like, no,
I can't pick one, like, I gotta like it's gotta
be both, right, so really, and then passcor and Brad
Gardner will wear the a's for the Colts as well.
Speaker 3 (37:36):
Just a'll add that too, nice. Yeah, I agree. I
think that's just to split down the middle, flip a corner.
You get it for the road, you get it for
the home games Jerseys. They're both gonna get home in road.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
I was gonna say, I guess that'll switch halfway through,
which we're not huge fans of here on the Ohl
and sixty Podcast, just to keep it consistent. But anyways,
we'll hit a break when we come back. Still a
long on tap, but we're gonna talk winsor we're gonna
talk Autawa, We're gonna talk going Sound. Ohl Players of
a Week were announced as well, so we'll touch on
(38:08):
that and then our top five to round out the
show this week on the Ohl and sixty Podcast.

Welcome back to the Ohl and sixty podcast with Colin
Ward Imrie Dumani. Thanks so much everybody for tuning in
on your favorite audio platforms wherever you get your podcasts,
and of course on YouTube in the Armchair GM Sports Network.
We've got a few things to cover in the second
segment of this show, and we'll start with the players
of the week and the OHL Player of the Week
(40:39):
Kashawan Ahison, one of two newly named captains for the
Barry Colts. Three games, he had five goals and one
assist for a total of six points. He was also
a plus seven for the Barry Colts, who trailed five
to one in Niagara, came all the way back and
won six to five in a shoot. So Hison takes
(41:01):
home player of the week goaltender of the week from
the Kingston front Acts. It is Gavin Betts two and
zero with a one goals against average and a safe
percentage of nine to sixty. That included a shutout for
the Kingston netminders. So congratulations to him. Kingston off to
(41:21):
a nice start man this season, four to one on
the year.
Speaker 3 (41:25):
Prioritize goaltending second round pick thirty seventh overall, Gavin Bats
Right prioritized goaltending shit last week. I mean they moved
on from an over ageran vacari right, like who's been there,
who was a mainstay for them for a long time.
I mean you look at his numbers. I mean that's
the excite. That's the excitement, right when you actually develop
and you put time in the process in the goaltending.
(41:46):
And plus for Gavin bats he gets to play in
front of a top five in my opinion, defense is
to play in front of in the entireo Hockey League.
That system and system wise that is to play in
front of I would love to play in Kingston. Their
systems ideal, like you know, like you're not gonna give
up a lot of shots, Troy Manns system. It's like
a man on man. The problem is if a guy
(42:07):
loses his man. It's like the Carolina Hurricanes, right, they
lose their man, then you got to make some big saves.
But I don't mind that right at least I know
my guys in front of me are engaged. And as
a goaltender, you love that. So that's right on. It's
gonna be intriguing watch see a young Gavin Bets not
very big I five eleven, one seventy four, but we'll see.
Like I was talking to a beat ready for the
(42:28):
Red Wings a couple of weeks ago about about goaltending
and it's funny how goaltending some teams and for instance,
like it was it wasn't even about the Red Wings,
but like how some teams and looking at it, well,
yeah it involves the Red Wings. But you think about
like some teams don't even look at a goalie now
if they're under six to three, like NHL teams they
don't even give you like, they don't even look at you.
(42:49):
But if you're gonna put up numbers like that, you're
gonna get your shot. So hopefully for Gavin bets he
continues to develop. And I can't wait to watch this
guy throughout his career. But what a system to play
in front of him, Kingston. I mean, wish more people
will get to the games. But great, great spot for
Batch to be in, a great situation.
Speaker 2 (43:06):
Yeah, it doesn't matter how how tall you are. If
you have more wins than losses, if you've got five
plus shutouts in a year, if your save percentage is
plus nine hundred plus, if your goals against average is
sub two and a half.
Speaker 3 (43:21):
Yeah you better get a look.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
So so yeah, Gavin Betsa was the OHL Goaltender of
the Week to the Rookie of the Week in the
Ontario Hockey League. A member of the All Name Team,
It's Nikita Klepov from the Saganaw Spirit three games for him,
he had three goals and two assists for five total points.
He was also a plus one this week for the
(43:44):
Saganaw Spirits, who were in a little bit of a
track meet with the Owen Sound Attack. That was a
seven to five game up at the Bay Shore. So
a lot of goals this weekend, specifically an Owen sound
because the next day he saw nine combined between the
Owen Sound attack and the windsor Spit fires.
Speaker 3 (44:03):
So a lot of.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
Goals early on at the at the Bay Shore, the
newly renovated Bay Shore. I should bounce it, but Nikita
Klapov a big part of that when helping his team
DEFEATO and Sound seven to five on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (44:16):
The bounces are supposed to be gone in Oh and Sound,
but they had one in the Saganaw game as well.
They had a guy they had a bounce go off
of the boards and off a goalie. But the bouncers
are supposed to be gone to the Bay Shore. But yeah,
still created one last bounce.
Speaker 2 (44:29):
Yeah, yeah, you'll get one on occasion right the Ghost
of the Bay Shore.
Speaker 3 (44:33):
It went out everyone.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
And then the Ohl prospect of the week from the
Greater Ontario Hockey League.
Speaker 3 (44:41):
We're gonna go to the Pelham Panthers in our neck
of the woods, Brandon.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
Kind of even though you're in the Falls, I'm in
Saint Catharine's but uh, Liam Edgecombe from the Pelham Panthers
played in two games.
Speaker 3 (44:53):
He was two and oher with two shutouts. Pretty good, Yeah,
pretty get Uh.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
He defeated the Hamilton Kilty Bees to nothing and then
he beat the well And Junior Canadians three nothing.
Speaker 3 (45:07):
Nice.
Speaker 2 (45:07):
Man, if you're a goaltender pitches a shutout, Uh, you
don't need eight goals to win a hockey game. So
Panthers doing it with two and three goals because they're
ne minder. Threw up a donut with your right, a
very sharp looking mass there wardy mm hmm.
Speaker 3 (45:21):
That's nice. That's one of the nicest masks you'll see
in the g O HL. But uh, I think that
that Uh, I think that's a sharp looking mass. That's
one of the nicer ones that you're gonna see. Yeah.
Good for Flint Agoalie here on the radar, absolutely absolutely so. Uh.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
Next up, we just uh, we just hit the players
of the week, the winsor Spitfires calling. We kind of
touched on them a little bit last week. We're gonna
continue on because they tied their franchise record uh for
a start to a season at seven and zero. It
was a four to three shootout win over the Branford
Bulldogs on Saturday and in October. I don't know if
(46:01):
it's possible to have the best game of the year.
I mean, that's a pretty good candidate for the game
of the year between the Bulldogs and spit Fires. I
mean a lot of people have both of those teams
in the finals for the second time, well in.
Speaker 3 (46:17):
Five years, four years, five years on math.
Speaker 2 (46:20):
But yeah, the Spitfires now seven and one. They did
loose to Owen Sound on Sunday, but that that game
on Saturday, Colin did not disappoint, and you saw the
effect of how big the defense was for the winsor
spit Fires.
Speaker 3 (46:33):
They're aggressive at their own blue line.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
On the penalty kill, they're forcing you to the outside hard,
They're forcing you back to the point really hard.
Speaker 3 (46:41):
It kills aggressive.
Speaker 2 (46:43):
Yeah, it did leave quite a bit of room in
the middle of the in the middle of their own
zone if somebody found their way in behind the defense.
But I think it's just so intimidating for an opposition player,
where if you you know, more than likely both defensemen
on the ice are six feet are taller, and and
for the Bulldogs they don't have the tallest roster They've
(47:04):
got their fair share of six foot guys are taller,
but you think of some of the stars. Adam Bannock
is five to nine or five ten, I believe, you know,
even Lucas Moore when he jumps into the play, that's
a guy that's under six feet tall. So you look
at the Spitfire seat, that's intimidating for for an opposition.
When you see their defense and and again it I'm
(47:24):
not surprised they're seven and zero. The fact that, uh,
you know, the majority of those eight games without Spellacy
and green Tree, and they were very present in that
game on on Saturdays, so we're belchez and and Nesbit
as well. But this this one's their Spitfires team is
built very well, right from Joey Costanzo to to center,
(47:47):
through their defense and through their forward group. It'll be
interesting to see what they do in terms of trades
throughout the season, because you know it, Yes, can they
improve in some areas, sure, but there's not a lot
of flaws with the windsor spit Fires. Maybe again, leaving
the mill of the ice open on the penalty kill
is an ideal because they are so aggressive, but.
Speaker 3 (48:10):
All happen in the diamond though.
Speaker 2 (48:12):
Yeah, it's also they made they're still effective like bulldogs
never gotta pass through the middle, never did so, Yeah,
that's also part of it.
Speaker 3 (48:21):
Well yeah, i mean they're aggressive on the penalty kill.
They're penalty killing and they're so big, like they're getting
lanes like it's effortless, like you might think it's not there,
and then boom, the six foot six tree trunk reaches
out on the back end and there's a poke checked
out po check the puck out the center. There they're team.
I mean, they smelled you at the blue line. They're
like a funnel at the blue line. They want like
they suck you through the middle and then you get
(48:43):
a kick out and they're they're gonna be good. It's
interesting to see what their needs are gonna be later
on in the year. I mean, they're still figuring out
their roster. You're only a couple of games of Green
Tree in the mix. Spellacy as well. Col Davis said,
a big start for the season for them. I mean,
with his speed, Bell Chaz is developing really well for them.
I'm sure they gotta be excited about what Belchez is
bringing to the table and windsor I mean Carson Wittall,
(49:04):
but he's doing I mean, talk about an underrated starts
to the season. Ten points in their first aid game
for the defenseman, those are games that's huge. I mean
Christaforo coming back, who I have for defenseman of the
Year in the entire hockey league. I think the I
think that winsor I mean their depth is really good.
This like, this team's gonna be good. They're set up
(49:25):
for success. Hopefully they can get a two goalie effort
for this early on in the year. I mean, Costanzo,
you're gonna ride them all year. But remember what happened
in lon of with Brett Rochu. When you get into
the finals, it's it's a different animal. So we'll see
what happens here with with Costanzo. But you're gonna need
a second guy to step up to here in the
dog days of November. When you get to November another
(49:47):
month from now, in the momentum and then the game's
kind of slow down a little bit because the excitement
level's gone. I'm just new to the year. It'll be
interesting how they go through those steps. But winter All,
I mean they played to their coach. They played in
their coach. They're loud, they're big, they're strong, they like
to attack. They're an attack they're they're they're a offensive
(50:07):
heavy team. I mean they when they get the puck
on their own blue line, they get the puck on
the outlet, they're thinking to score right away. They're they're
thinking they're going, they're going over the opponent blue line
with authority. They're coming in. They play too high all
the time the neutral zone, and that's one thing that's
gonna be interesting. I think the Bulldogs had a lot
of chances off that as well on Saturday, especially early
on Drevetski's goal on the snapshot using the defenseman you
(50:28):
had too high, too high forwards. He got caught on
winds heor what I mean. It's man rushed with the
defenseman the other way for the Bulldogs, that's how it
goes in the back of your net. But I think
that this I think winsor is gonna be really good.
I'm excited to see what they can do. I mean,
right now, I think there's two teams that really stand out. Still,
not that no one sounds not playing their way in
there in Ottawa with their start, but it's four games, right,
But I think that this is gonna be exciting to
(50:51):
see how this wins. Your process keeps developing here for
Greg Walters and staff.
Speaker 2 (50:57):
Yeah, I mean, speaking of the Autawa six, that's where
we're going next again, stranger only they've only played four games,
very likely start to their schedule. They're four and oh
heading into this week's action, but they've only given up
seven they're the seven goals, I mean, they're they're the
only team to allow ten goals or less so far.
(51:18):
And again four games. You know, read into that what
you will. But but the Autawa sixty sevens special team
numbers aren't awesome. I mean, fifteen percent isn't terrible, Seventy
five percent of the K isn't horrendous.
Speaker 3 (51:32):
PK was a huge.
Speaker 2 (51:33):
Struggle for them last year. But for the for the
sixty sevens, I mean, they're everything's clicking right now. And
I know there are a few discussions about whether Cameron
was gonna last the year in a contract year, what
what was the direction they're gonna take. Is Ottawa gonna
really be that bad? And again, it's four games. We're
not reading in too much. We could consider this an overreaction.
Speaker 3 (51:55):
Segment.
Speaker 2 (51:56):
But the Ottawa sixty sevens are clicking early in the season.
We're gonna see them in person Sunday calling. They're in
Branford as the TD Civic Center, so we'll get to
see what this team is not on camera, we'll get
to see the full picture. But what do you make
of the sixty sevens start? And then we'll get to
(52:17):
their crazy schedule coming up as you can see it
on there. They begin a stretch where they're on the
road for eight of nine.
Speaker 3 (52:24):
Well, number one early your recipe for success early on
in the season, three or less goals. Right, you look
at their you look at their most recent game on
October fourth against Aie. They win four one. You give
up one goal, you give up one goal, you're gonna win.
You're gonna win ninety percent of the games, ninety five
percent of the games in the Atario hockey give you
give up one goal in a game, three goals, you're
gonna give yourself a fifty to fifty shot. You score
(52:45):
seven goals, well, no problem. Right, three to one over
North Bay and six to two to start the season
over Kingston. Right, three or less goals every night. That's
the name of the game in the Atario Hockey that
you can do that, you're gonna win games. You look
at their lineup, though they have a lot of household names,
you look at their lineup right now and you look
at the points that they have in their lineup. Multiple
guys have four points, multiple guys have five points. You
(53:06):
know they're getting contributions from everyone right now. I mean,
you look at their point leader in Vandenburg, like you
get a guy that comes into the Atario Hockey th
they're playing well like that. That's huge for your success.
It's going to be interesting. But to be honest, I'm
kind of I was kind of kicking myself this week
on the doodcast Race when you're previewing this game for
the Bulldogs Audio Network, and I'm kind of upset about
myself for having them ranked where I did at the
(53:27):
end of the year because I look at their roster
right and this is one of those things where we
talk about where predictions early on in the year are tough.
You get Cooper Foster, you get these guys back, and
I'm thinking, well, Foster's a menace to play on the
fore check. You can be a pain in the butt
when he's on I mean on the Ford check and
that Dave Cameron system of hockey. You know they're not
gonna take a lot of penalties. If you take a
lot of penalties in the Dave Cameron system, you're not
(53:48):
gonna play. It's just simple. And we talked about this before.
Dave Cameron is a coach in the Ontario Hockey League
and I've been critical of Dave Cameron one thousand percent.
I own that for sure, mostly on his World Junior
takes not much with Ottawa because I like what he's
done with the sixty seven. Mostly it's a World Junior.
But anyways, that's in the past tense. But you look
(54:09):
at Dave Cameron, he's the type of coach that if
you're an agent and you're in his ear about playing
fourteen minutes a night, well then okay, you just don't play.
If you don't play the system of the way the
Ottawa sixty seven is hockey is meant to be played.
In Dave Cameron's system, he's your coach, you just don't play.
And I think that that's why you kind of have
(54:29):
to accept the ability to play in that system. It's
a tough system to play in, but it's a strategic system.
It's very hands on. It's one of those areas where
you gotta be engaged in to find details. If you
lack find details in Dave Cameron's system, and then think
back to a couple of years ago, even you know
when they do that behind the barber poles and you
(54:49):
see the in depth talks from Dave Cameron, it's always
the same thing about the details, the details, right, the
details in their game lack tonight, our details in their game.
We're good tonight, win and loss. You know, that's the difference.
That's one thing I really like about Dave Cameron. He's
very detail oriented. Hey, we talked with Ottawa before in
the past, Ottawa sixty sevens don't do the drop off
(55:11):
on their power play. Why, well, we have an easy
time defending it on our penalty kill, so why would
we do it on our power play? Right? Common sense.
I think that's why Dave Cameron is the type of
coach in the Antario Hockey love him or hate him,
he's a great coach in this league because he's a
coach that sticks to the details and for development in
the Ottawa sixty seven's organization. That is a great organization
(55:32):
to develop your game and to become a pro in
and that's why I think that their success has been automatic.
I mean, they look good. They have two tough games
this week with bear in Barry and Brampton. Obviously their
road games are coming up here. Those are tough games.
But I'm very intrigued on seeing Friday night in Brampton.
I'm very intrigued by that game. Barry is gonna be
interesting for sure. Thursday. I'm not overlooking that game because
(55:54):
that's a tough game. But Brampton Ottawa, we're two teams
at the beginning of the year reach where we're thinking,
like the teams are kind of similar, you know, like
I don't know, I don't have high expectations for these teams,
but you never know. Like James Richmond, I've counted them
off before to finish tenth place, and all of a
sudden they finish fifth. Like that's like, you know, you
can find a way to tinker with your defense. They're smart,
(56:15):
adaptive coaches that can kind of reach something here. You know,
defensively they can take space away and all of a
sudden they win a game two one. I'm excited to
see what those what that game matches up as, because
that's kind of a measuring stick game for me personally.
And then they're successful if they're successful these two games
obviously Sunday on paper, If the Bulllags are successful throughout
(56:38):
the week, that is too, could be a fun game
to watch on Sunday because you don't know what it's
gonna be. It's a measuring stick game again this year
in the league, every week is measuring stick week. You
might as well, uh, name the show this week measuring
stick because that's kind of what the league is right now.
You no one knows what each others are, what each
other is. You're watching teams constantly to see, oh this
is what they do? Ay tennant season. I just think,
(56:59):
otta while they're a good groove right now, you're feeling good.
They haven't played a lot of games, they're rested, but hey,
now it's a battle arrested here as you come in
on this road trip, right and you gotta be successful.
How's it gonna go? Yeah? Do you get that Brandon
name of the show? BC? Sure did measuring stick there?
The first well how the first what two months is
(57:21):
measuring stick months? In the Ential League? And then and
then you get to a game in January where they're
supposed to be two good teams, and then it's a
measuring stick.
Speaker 2 (57:29):
Yeah, I mean minus week one. I think you can
throw week one out of that.
Speaker 3 (57:34):
But yeah, the next six to seven even then.
Speaker 2 (57:40):
Well yeah, like but that game, Yes, we look at
the schedule, We're like, hey, all right, kitchen early on,
those are good teams. Awesome sweet Yeah, twenty guys are
out of the light. So then it's it's an anticipated
game because geographically the two teams are close and fans
can travel fair easily between Kitchener and Branford. I say
(58:02):
fairly because Kitchener and driving in Kitchener is a little
spotty depending on the time. But uh, you know, it's
not the feeling at the beginning.
Speaker 3 (58:13):
We're like, oh, the schedule is really it's nice, Kitcher Branford.
Speaker 2 (58:15):
Let's go whereas you see twenty guys are out of
the line, and be like, oh okay.
Speaker 3 (58:19):
Kitchener Branford. Yeah, geographic nice. I had a great talk
with Josh Brown pregame and throughout the game about what
could have been. It's kind of the what could have
been game. The depth always great to talk to those guys.
It's oh yeah, but what could have been in that game?
I think is the big one. The one that got
away is a fun one. They left us at the
(58:40):
altar there that one in the the NHL teams did.
Oh man, it's exciting. Definitely November they come to Civic Center,
so that it'll be fun.
Speaker 2 (58:48):
Yeah, for anyone looking or watching us on YouTube, you
can see Autawa's schedule there. That is from January eighteenth
to February twenty second, they played twelve of thirteen at home.
That's over a month of twelve home games and one
on the road. That one game on the road being
in Peterborough. But they're schedules interesting. You don't really have
(59:13):
a weekend of two home games and then a road game,
or two road games and then a home game. And again,
Ottawa's East compared to everywhere else, to the most Eastern team,
so you're gonna get some trips and some stretches like this.
But twelve of thirteen at home, it's holy crap. Yeah, yeah,
ballot schedule, you're absolutely right. So well, and even we
(59:35):
were looking at a couple schedules because even on the
Branford Bulldogs schedule Tuesday, December thirtieth at four pm against
the Erie Otters, a Tuesday game at four. Now we
got the explanation on that the Bulldogs usually travel on
the thirtieth to Erie to get ready for a New
Year's Eve game, which has been the case for the
last number of years where they've played in Erie at
(59:58):
six o'clock on December thirty first. So I've been told
that's or we've been told that's the explanation behind that.
But still at four o'clock on a Tuesday, people don't
get the thirtieth off.
Speaker 3 (01:00:10):
I don't think. I don't think they do get any
but New Year But New Year's and Erie above twenty
one with a with a little bit of yingling might
be a little fun too. Uh, that might be a
little fun there. So how do you know? In other words,
road trip? Oh yeah, yeah, last year? Yeah, yeah, I
(01:00:36):
love it. I love Erie.
Speaker 2 (01:00:37):
I've only been to that arena once, but I thought
it was spectacular. I loved it. I love that building.
And that was back when Aaron Cooney was around. He'd
be like baking stuff for the media room too, like
that was top notch. So haven't been back since Aaron
has has been gone. But uh yeah, I'm a really
big fan of that arena and I'm sick myself for
(01:00:59):
for not seeing an Eerie Sea Wolves game yet that
is that is a huge fine against me. I have
never been to un baseball game, so I'm gonna I'm
gonna take that one on the chin. If Max Clark
starts in Double A, you bet I'm going next year.
And people listening have no idea who Max Clark is,
but he's a stud. But if he starts in Double
A along with McGonagall, I'm going.
Speaker 3 (01:01:20):
I got it till they got all up to Toledo
and they can play in Buffalo, probably all three games.
Speaker 2 (01:01:25):
The good point hopefully Buffalo you would have Canadian at
par for that that'd be nice. But yeah, and then
and then the Owen Sound Attack are the last team
we wanted to touch on. And again it's another team
where we've talked about them for a couple of weeks
in a row. But if you continue to play well
and and have success, we're gonna talk about you. You
(01:01:48):
just gotta and and with Owen Sound this week, they
had an opportunity to play all three goaltenders rightfully, saving
Carter George for for Sunday against the windsor spit Fires,
and well look what happened. You Don't Sound attack handed
wins are their first loss in the new season, and
we knew nobody's going sixty eight. No Ottaw was the
(01:02:09):
last undefeated team. Now the Bulldogs have not lost in
regulation yet. They are three to zero to two or
three to zero one and one on the OHL standings,
which I don't like that category my just personal opinion,
but difference, yeah, yeah, but the Don't Sound Attacker. You know,
they've scored twenty nine goals in seven games. They've given
(01:02:31):
up twenty three. So gold differential isn't awesome early on.
It's not like winsors thirty six to thirteen. But your
special teams are clicking early. That's huge for Owen Sound.
If you can keep that consistent throughout the year, who
knows where they're going to end up. Twenty eight point
six on the power play, eighty six point two on
the penalty kill. You do have the highest amount of
(01:02:52):
penalty minutes in the Western Conference, which I mean your
penalty kill is good enough, so it hasn't really mattered
that much early on in the season, whereas you get
into the middle part of the year, it might become
an issue if you start being in the penalty box
for too many times. But right now, the Own Sound
Attack playing really well and and it's it's exciting. And yes,
it's not a new building, but I think the Attacker
(01:03:14):
making it feel like one. Obviously you mentioned the you're
not supposed to have the bounce off the boards anymore.
They got one, you know, a bunch of changes made,
a bunch of renovations to the to the Bay Shore.
Just kind of feels like a little bit of a
reset for the Owen Sound Attack and the franchise in
the building and on the ice and that little community
and Owen Sound right off of Lake Huron playing some
(01:03:38):
good hockey right now. I know the uh, the Cheechy
model be parked there. If it's not parked there across
the canal way from the Bay Shore, eventually, I know
that's where it sits in the winter. But uh, they
are a they're a heavy ship coming at the Western
Conference this year, so it's it's been a fun start
for the Own Sound Attack. I don't think i've used
(01:03:59):
the We're fun enough. We could probably have a drinking
game the amount of times I've said it, but it's
a fun team through seven games, Yeah they are.
Speaker 3 (01:04:07):
I mean they are guys playing their best hockey early
on in the year. I know it's ear least, so
that's one thing. But they got guys playing the best
hockey they could have played so far in their HL careers.
I'm speaking on Noah Roberts, Transton. Those guys are playing
good hockey. Bradon Rodgers. They've come to play, They've had
a good camp. Obviously, they've had a good offseason. That's
what good offseason does gets you're ready get up a
little jump on the season. So shout out to them.
(01:04:29):
I mean those guys, they look good, their veterans look good,
and I mean it kind of fits the system right,
and it's funny. For instance, I mean five points in
his first seven games Mason Ray BC. You see him
in Niagara, we saw him in Branford. I mean, this
could be the best hockey Mason Mason Rays playing. I
know he's in his dad's system there, but you know,
no pun intended, but like he's this could This is
(01:04:50):
definitely the best stretch of hockey he's played in his
OHL career. For no reason. I like in Branford, like
small sample size in Niagara too, like this has to
be Yeah, yeah, Mason Ray is Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:05:04):
Again, he's a guy that's not you don't expect coming
into a season he's gonna score thirty goals, he's gonna
get a hundred points or whatever. But at least to start,
he's quietly, you know, proving why he's he's supposed to
be in the lineup.
Speaker 3 (01:05:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
And again he was a bubble guy for Brantford for sure.
You know, he was in and out and wasn't getting
consistent minutes changed a little bit going to Niagara. But
but in Owen sound, Yeah, it seems like he's thriving.
And again there's familiarity like you had mentioned Wardy but
uh and that helps a little bit or a lot
of it. But uh, yeah, he's uh, he's had a
(01:05:42):
nice start.
Speaker 3 (01:05:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:05:43):
And that's that's exciting too, because that's the guy you
cheer for, right, you know you've got your stars that
are gonna go on to the NHL.
Speaker 3 (01:05:49):
But it's.
Speaker 2 (01:05:52):
Yeah, the Bulldogs need a new best golfer. Joshua Avery
took that over from Mason Ray, and now they need
a new one. With Avery being shipped to Brampton.
Speaker 3 (01:06:00):
So yeah, balls in their court. They have a lot
of Owen sounds, a lot of guys up for the
cy Young right away too. You know you got Sakora
for goals, want to says, I was going over the
notes for the for the game Thursday, what to expect
with the with the Bulldogs for instance, with Niagara and
Ethan Zada with the cy Young. Obviously he's driving in
(01:06:21):
that system right now, in the in the system that
they have gone to Niagara, guy like Zada is gonna
thrive in that. But it's funny, it's like going over
the notes. There a lot of guys in the cy
Young early on in the year, you see guys get
hat tricks or whatever, and all of a sudden when
you only play fives to eight games, I mean you
have a hat trick one night, Well there's a cy
Young candidation. So yeah, it's it's always that fun time
(01:06:42):
of the year to point out cy Young candidates just
seven games in.
Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
Yeah, one guy you don't see is Captain David Benkowski
either back from the Buffalo Sabers.
Speaker 2 (01:06:52):
Right Yeah, and he'll actually miss their first game of
the weekend coming up to a one game suspension. So that's, uh,
that's something to look out for as well, that that
presence that won't be there for for a game for
the Owen Sound Attack. He is due back on October eleventh,
so that'll be Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:07:10):
And he's going to drag them into the fire there too,
which is at night for Owen Sound Hockey. He's gonna
drag them right into the fire. He's a good player,
Buffalo got a good one there. He's a guy that's
gonna bring you every night. I like those types of players. Yeah,
so or actually sorry, I lied. He missed the game
on Sunday. Ignore me.
Speaker 2 (01:07:32):
He uh, he did not play on Sunday. That was
his one game because their next game is the eleventh,
So yeah, ignore what I said. Good one rees, Yeah,
you're good. I'm having a day. But uh, let's uh,
let's get to the power rankings. And that's how we'll
wrap up this week's edition of the Ohl and sixty podcast.
If you're watching on YouTube, you're gonna see it pop
(01:07:52):
up on your screen. If you're listening, we'll run through
it quickly.
Speaker 3 (01:07:55):
Here.
Speaker 2 (01:07:56):
The Sarnia Sting up one spot their number sixteen Brampton
up one to number one. Sagana does not move. They're
the fourteenth ranked team. Aushaua Generals down one spot to
number thirteen. They swap with Gwelph who moves up one
to number twelve. London Knights do not move. They've got
their first couple of wins on the season. They are
now well Now they are still number eleven. North Bay
(01:08:17):
Battalion down one spots to number ten as they flip
with Barry, who moves up one to number nine. Next
two teams did not move. Eight the Ottawa sixty seven's
seven the Sue Greyhounds Niagara Ice Dogs. Despite collecting half
the points possible three out of six, they move down
three spots. That includes a blowout loss in Winsor and
(01:08:37):
a five to one blown lead against Barry and almost
a blown lead against against the Sarnia Sting up four
nothing and one four to three. So Kingston front n
Acts up one spot. They're number five. Oh and Sound
up one spot to number four. Kitchener up one spots
number three and then the top two teams as expected.
Speaker 3 (01:08:58):
Do not move.
Speaker 2 (01:08:59):
They can have easily flip flopped. I'm sure if Branford
wins the game, against Windsor. They probably do, but they're
essentially neck and neck the way we watch that game.
So Branford is number two, Windsor is number one, which
brings us to our top five this week. Colin, you
uh you have the box T box is yours?
Speaker 3 (01:09:18):
You're up first, all right? Number five for me, I
mean it's only four games, it was a small sample size,
but I think they deserve to be in this nod.
You start off four and oh the Ottawa sixty sevens.
It's hard right when they played four and Winsors played eight, like, so, yeah,
I'm gonna keep them in the fourth spot or at
the five spot in uh in Ottawa.
Speaker 2 (01:09:39):
Yeah, I'm I'm I'm kind of with you on that.
I've got them one higher. Number five for me right
now are the are the Kings of Frontenacs. I thought
they've had one heck of a start. They're on a
five game point streak right now. You know, penalty kill
has been good to start. They're very disciplined team under
(01:10:00):
Troy Man. They've got the second least amount of penalty
minutes so far throughout the their first six games. So
they've impressed me quite a bit. And Gavin Betts is
a big part of that, obviously helping them get to
this mark.
Speaker 3 (01:10:11):
But I've got kings to that.
Speaker 2 (01:10:12):
Number five, number four, Number four, Number four for me,
the Kitchen Rangers, Kitchener when everything's settled down, I mean
they're gonna go up from this.
Speaker 3 (01:10:25):
By the Rangers to me are the fourth spot. Number four.
Speaker 2 (01:10:30):
I've got Ottawa not really any other reasons than than
you mentioned Colin again, four games compared to like you said,
Winsor's played eight, Sue's played eight. There's a number of
teams that have played seven. Ottawa's just got to catch up.
But four and oh is good enough to get you
fourth on my list. So who's number three for you?
Speaker 3 (01:10:48):
Three for me? The only sound attack. They're playing the
best hockey they've played in a long time. In my eyes,
I think their goaltending is the best goaltending trio in
the Ontario Hockey League. I think that they're going to
get med Kowski back. The way they're playing, they're the
third best team right now.
Speaker 2 (01:11:06):
Yeah, I agree. I've got one sound too. You're absolutely right.
Their goaltenders have been really good to start. Their special teams,
like we just mentioned previous to this, have been have
been really good and uh yeah, again, you'd love to
see the penalty minutes maybe start to slow down a
little bit. But but other than that, they're playing really
good hockey in front of in front of their fans,
(01:11:27):
and so yeah, they're number three.
Speaker 3 (01:11:29):
I couldn't agree with you more. Wardy, who's number two?
To Branford neck and neck, the two best teams on
paper in my opinion, just went neck and neck, And
I mean you can split it both ways. It went
in a shootout, like yeah, when you go to the
skills competition, it's like a tie. It felt like being there,
it felt like it was a tie game, like it
was weird.
Speaker 2 (01:11:49):
But I think to Branford, yeah, yeah, I've got Branford
at number two as well. That's a game that you
want to get rid of the shootout and just have
them keep playing over time.
Speaker 3 (01:12:00):
It was.
Speaker 2 (01:12:01):
It was a really good hockey game. Shots were thirty
eight thirty one Brantford seven. Shot difference doesn't mean a
whole lot in this situation. The teams were were neck
and neck. They were they were very tight. The entire
game winsor goes up three to one, Branford fights back
to tie it and then get to the shootout. But
that's a game you wanted no shootout. You just want
(01:12:22):
to continue us overtime. But but yeah, right now, I think, uh,
I think the Spitfire is just a little bit ahead
of the Bulldogs, but it's very close. So yeah, Branford's
number one or number two for me, pretty obvious. Who's
number one? Colin Ward, you can uh, you can go ahead.
Speaker 3 (01:12:39):
The Windsors Fires, they're they're a wagon them, Yeah, them
and Branford, And I don't think there's any I think
right now it's their ballpark. Things are gonna change, though.
Teams are gonna go through slum schemes are gonna go
through adversity and to see how good Windsor is. But
Windsor Rain now is the best team the entire hockey league. Yep, yeah,
(01:13:01):
I agree.
Speaker 2 (01:13:02):
It's it's wild to think of the thirteen goals they've allowed,
six of those went in in one game.
Speaker 3 (01:13:09):
It's wild.
Speaker 2 (01:13:10):
They lost six to three and owen sound that's six
out of thirteen. You take that game away. Seven goals
allowed in seven games pretty good for the Windsor Spitfires,
who have a power play over thirty five percent and
a penalty kill over eighty seven percent. So they've been
they've been pretty damn good, to say the least. So
Collins list goes Windsor Branford Owen Sound, Kitchener, Ottawa. That
(01:13:33):
is one to five. I've got Windsor Brantford Owen Sound, Ottawa,
Kingston one to five. If you don't agree with us,
or you agree with us, you can let us know.
We're on every social media platform as the Ohl and
sixty podcast. That is Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. Yeah, I think
that's all the main ones, all the ones that people
(01:13:55):
care about, probably, but yeah, and that wraps us up
for another week of the Ohl and sixty podcast.
Speaker 3 (01:14:02):
It was it was a fun one.
Speaker 2 (01:14:04):
We were looking at topics today trying to get ready
for the show. And you know, in terms of news,
it was a fairly light week other than place or
four of them, so that helped. But but other than that,
it was a light news week.
Speaker 3 (01:14:19):
What was that BC The NHL camps right, that helps
for sure, really accelerated the things going into profiles on that,
starting to learn systems of some teams. Some teams are
still learning systems. It's interesting. One more thing I want
to mention, it's interesting, he said, Nate Villena with the
(01:14:40):
Instagram video whatever, he's back this weekend. Hmmm post post
of video.
Speaker 2 (01:14:47):
I think for another three and three that would be
that would be a gift from God for the Sudbury Wolves.
Two three and three's in the first four weeks. Get
your Yeah, that that's it. That would be huge. Yeah,
so hopefully that's some good news.
Speaker 3 (01:15:04):
Tend the show on for Wolves fans all those weeks
burying them, and then you get that you're welcome programming
alert for next week.
Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
Uh yeah, BC, Yeah you're on that. I totally would
have forgot. Next week is Thanksgiving. There's a solid chance
I'm in Windsor So that means I'm not available for
a show. BC has his family dinner. He is not
available for a show. Mister Ward, are you in the
Del High, Ontario?
Speaker 3 (01:15:33):
I believe you are. Oh yeah, I'm always mentally in
the dell High, Ontario's speaking of the Del High, Ontario
Friday night good luck to the Raiders Friday Night Lights
against Try in Simco. But obviously it's in Dell High
Friday night Lights home game, packed the school. I'm popped.
(01:15:55):
Let's go right thee del High, Ontario Let's show him
who the del High, Ontario is. We've always been the
capitol of Norfolk County and I don't see that changing.
Friday night, Let's go baby pumped the Dell High.
Speaker 2 (01:16:06):
So does that mean you're missing Bulldog's Wolves to go
watch that game.
Speaker 3 (01:16:10):
No, but I'm gonna have it on my phone. I
will have that on my phone. I will have it
on my phone.
Speaker 2 (01:16:17):
That's a sign of a poor, poor uh former Dell
High guy. That's come on my phone, Dude's not the
game in high school in the woods.
Speaker 3 (01:16:28):
The game in Dell High is like the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Every game, every game is every team's every team's national
championship is against them. And that's just the respect you
have when you go to the best school in the
Norfolk County. The Della Hi, Ontario is the capital. And
I just can't wait to showcase that. Every year, every
team's best comes into Dell High thinking they're gonna win
(01:16:51):
and then boom, hearts are broken, just like that. Can't wait.
Very excited. Number four Bobby Orr for those on YouTube
reaches holding up before, what's that mean? The foreign National
Championship Ohio State has since Michigan. Yeah, you know what? Why? Yeah?
(01:17:12):
What's with that?
Speaker 2 (01:17:13):
I thought Ohio band planting flags and then Jose Ramirez
did it in Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (01:17:17):
What's with that? Hmm? I don't like. I don't like.
You guys are pretenders. Well, to be honest, you don't
follow through another word, but I'm not going to say it. Well,
I got some words too that I could say. But
I think that a cameraman Stallion's being out just showcases everything.
When Michigan loves the USC this week as underdogs at home,
(01:17:41):
that's wild. That's pretty wild. Eh.
Speaker 2 (01:17:44):
Yeah, they're in USC because they're practicing at the Chargers
facility this week on the road.
Speaker 3 (01:17:49):
So if I'm USC, I am all over the security
footage in that venue. I don't trust obviously, But Bronco's there.
But Broncos win. Uh, it's a good week, Philadelphia fans.
I'm sorry that the Broncos didn't have one hundred and
fifty five penalty yards against them instead of one hundred
and twenty five. Oh man, oh no, my apologies. I understand.
(01:18:13):
I understand that it should be one hundred more yards
in favor of you than the fifty. I understand that,
but Hey, maybe don't blow a seventeen point lead to
co and hey, you can do all your flying in Philly,
but hey, I'd rather be riding in Broncos country. All Right,
I'm good. Let's go away, shel Go Jays. That concludes
(01:18:34):
this week's show. He had to throw that in there, Sorry, BC.
I thought there were rules.
Speaker 2 (01:18:39):
Apparently not there are rules, but just go go Tikes.
Speaker 3 (01:18:45):
But hey, yeah that.
Speaker 1 (01:18:46):
The Yankees will be eliminated by the time this comes out.
Speaker 3 (01:18:48):
I'm sure probably. But this week's show of the Ohl
and sixty podcast for the listeners, thanks so much for
tuning in.
Speaker 2 (01:18:58):
