Dogs coverage as well for our friends over at the
Dog at the Dog Cast pod. Rees, thanks so much
(02:02):
for being able to join us tonight. Obviously you're up
here with us covering the Bulldogs tonight. Colin Ward was
unable to join us tonight, but I know his rough
thoughts is now out as well. But again, we're gonna
break down this five nothing win for the Branford Bulldogs.
We're gonna hear from Ice Dog's head coach Chris BArch
and everything regarding the game.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
But you know, thanks for joining us tonight.
Speaker 5 (02:23):
Of course, Brandon. Yeah, absolutely love to do it. Love
to be here. Still kind of feels like home a
little bit after interning for three years here at the
Meridian Center. Albeit it was about six years ago or
so I'm old now, but yeah, I mean, Colin Warn
at home. It seems like we can never come here
at the same time. You know, it was just Wardy
last time the Bulldogs were here.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
Last year.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
I think I made the trip every time, but Wardy didn't.
I mean a little bit easier. I'm only ten minutes away.
But always happy to be here, Brandon, always happy to
accept an invite to join you here.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Absolutely, and I'm sure you were happy with the result
tonight and the Branford Bulldog side of things. And again
this team and I guess we'll start their rees because
the Bulldogs are undefeated in regulation still, but I'd say
the last week or two they haven't been playing themselves.
So you know, again, when you have such high expectations
as this team does, you know, as a team that
(03:15):
is looked at as the favorite and not only the OHL,
but possibly all the CHL, how do you how do
you see a team like this on it from a
game in and game oer basis be able to hold
that standard, because when you go in expecting to win
these games, it can be easy to just sort of
have other teams, you know, come in with their best
effort against you. But it seems like the Bulldogs time
and time again are able to even like we saw
(03:36):
tonight against the Ice Dogs, it was a zero zero
game after the first and then things just they just
kind of took over when they needed to.
Speaker 6 (03:42):
Yeah. Yeah, we've seen that a couple of times.
Speaker 5 (03:44):
And really this was the best game for the Bulldogs
since their Michigan trip, which was two or three weekends ago,
where you know, they go into Flint and it's similar
situation as to as to this game, no score after
twenty minutes, to nothing after forty minutes in Flint, and
then they scored five in the third and it was
seven nothing before you knew it. And then the next
(04:06):
day in Saganaw they win six too. But since then
it had been quite a few close games. I'll give
it that return game against the Flint Firebirds. The Firebirds
were really good and they're on a heater right now.
But even the next day against the against the Brampton Steelheads,
it was, you know, a team in the Steelheads where
you know, a game after Dragusica takes a baseball swing
(04:29):
and and gets suspended in definitely pending review. You know,
a Steelheads team that doesn't have the talent they did
last year, and they come into Bramford for the second
time this season after by the way, that first time
they met in Branford it was nine to nothing Bulldogs
after two periods and it ended up being a nine
to three game. So you know, it just seemed like
(04:50):
and I don't question effort, I don't criticize effort at all.
These guys are playing at a very high level that
I was never even close to. I was one of
your house league heroes in the Hespler, Ontario area. But uh,
you know, for the Bulldogs to see a complete sixty
minutes where it just seemed like they were in the
right position the entire game. They made crisp passes, they
(05:11):
were you know, hard on the four check down low
in the offensive zone, and the Ice Dogs just didn't
have an answer, you know. And and that's I'm not
gonna knock the Ice Dogs at all. They've got some
talented guys on this team, Kevin he Ryan Roebrick, like
you think of those two guys leading the way. Riley
Patterson that one of the newcomers this year. But they
just they didn't have an answer. Just the Bulldogs are
(05:33):
four lines deep despite missing their fourth line center, and
Lane Gallaheru is a face off wizard. It just the
Ice Dogs didn't have an answer. And that's that's what
the Bulldogs are. They want to be that team where
you come in and it's intimidating no matter what building
you're playing in, whether it's a TD Civic Center, whether
it's here in Niagara, whether they have they have go.
They have to go up to Sue for the one
and only time, uh in a season. They want to
(05:55):
be an intimidating team to play against it. And yeah,
they haven't lost in regulation, but you know, it hasn't
been a perfect season to this date. There have been
things that Jay McKee has pointed out that he'd like
to see improve.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Yeah, and we're going to get into the game stats here,
starting things off here, and as always as brought to
you by JNL Flooring. You think you're a better deal
anywhere else? You don't know, Jack, contact them at JNOL
Flooring dot com or their NAGR Falls location. Have been
your quality flooring project today and we kind of mentioned it.
Reese the first period shots eight three in favor of Branford,
but it was a zero zero game after the first period,
(06:30):
and then Branford outshot the Ice Dogs twenty five to
fifteen in those last two periods, ends up being a
thirty three eighteen total in favor of the Bulldogs. And
the Ice Dogs haven't out shot their opponents very much
this season. And again, I know shots on net can
sometimes be misleading because technically you can take a shot
from the blue line that has no chance of going
in and it counts as a shot, right, So it
(06:51):
depends on the high danger scoring chances. But throughout the game,
I just felt like the Ice Dogs weren't really getting
that sustained zone time and really if they had a chance,
it was like a quick one and done.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
They didn't.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
They weren't able to work the puck around or get
multiple rebounds or multiple opportunities in an offensive shift, where
the Bulldogs I felt like at times they were able
to just go to any part of the ice and
you know, have two or three really good scoring chances
of Vladislav your Malanko started tonight, and I think, you know,
this could have been an eight to nine to nothing
game if it wasn't for your Malenko at times, because really,
if I look at maybe one of the five goals tonight,
(07:25):
he'd probably want back the rest of them. You know,
Branford's got goals on a shorthanded two on one. You know,
like just some some very elite talent on the other end,
as you'll hear Chris Bartes talk about that, you know,
this is almost like an American Hockey League team they
were playing against tonight.
Speaker 5 (07:40):
Yeah, yeah, it's it's wild to say that the first
two goals for the Bulldogs weren't scored five on five.
You get that shorthanded marker and then, I mean, coming
into the game, you knew one of the keys for
Niagara had to be to stay out of the pealty box.
Speaker 6 (07:52):
This is a power play.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
It's over forty percent and it's not even close to
the rest of the pack with how good they look,
and you're a check capitalizes. So you know, you get
two goals that aren't five on five, which for the
Ice Dogs you could look as a positive. Obviously, you
don't like giving up short handed goals because it was
an odd man rush shorthanded for the Bulldogs also, but
then you give up a power play goal to the
(08:14):
league's best best power play, league's best offense, andything, And okay,
you know what, it's not a terrible spot. We just
got to find a way to get our legs. Five
on five, stay out of the box, don't give them
chances on the man advantage and let's see where we
can get And you're right, it just it seemed like
there were way too many one and don's for the
Niager Ice Dogs in the offensive zone, right, they get
a quality shot on Leanders, And you know, credit to Leanders.
(08:37):
I thought his rebound control was really good tonight. Those
shots that were in good spots weren't left to be
banged home in the slot or at the side of
the cage.
Speaker 6 (08:48):
You know.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
I thought he did a really nice job deflecting rebounds
away from the front of the net. So that's tough
for the Ice Dogs. It's a learning experience, right, and
and it's gonna be pretty similar on Saturday against the
Barry Colts when they come to town. Who they're just
as hot right now as the as the Bulldogs are.
So it's you know, you learn a lot from these games,
(09:09):
right five nothing, Yeah, you don't score eighteen shots.
Speaker 6 (09:13):
Isn't awesome to see by by any means.
Speaker 5 (09:16):
But also you know, now you know what it takes
to be the top top level of the OHL in
the Canadian Hockey League and what takes to be an
elite hockey club.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
Yeah, I mean that that's the highest benchmark you can
get to right now is the s Branford Bulldogs team
and again the Ice Dogs will play them again later
in January down in Branford.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
And that's all.
Speaker 5 (09:34):
It took long enough. What the heck's up with? Dash
gotch coming to Tdcimics Center a while.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
I missed going there, even though it's been a house
of horrors for the Ice Dogs for years. But as
you mentioned, Branford's top rank power play the Ice Dogs,
you want to take a positive out of it. They
were two for three on the penalty kill against the
top rank power play, even though at that at that
point in the game they're up three to nothings.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
And I think that goes back to what you were
saying about how your Malenko played. Really one maybe t
but I'm leaning closer to one as well that he'd
walk back. But other than that, it's a team that
can move the puck really well. Youre Malanco was scrambling
a few times in his net. Really the Bulldog's not
giving him giving him an opportunity to get set for shots.
So again, that's just how skilled the Bulldogs are, and
(10:18):
your Malanco did everything he could in this game.
Speaker 6 (10:20):
It just it seemed like the.
Speaker 5 (10:22):
D were invisible sometimes in front of your your Malanco.
Speaker 6 (10:26):
Tonight.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Yeah, the Ice Dog's zero for three on the power play,
which again they're at twelve point seven percent, which is
last in the Ontario Hockey League. And you'll hear Chris
Barts talk about they just continue to try to work
through things. They tried five forwards tonight that didn't work.
They tried some different things and again that's a unit
that that's been you know, snake bitten all season long.
And you just wonder where they could possibly be right
(10:48):
now if that power play it goes from twelve percent
to even fifteen or twenty percent, where they could possibly
be right now in the standings. But the only really
positive tonight, And I know I'm going to hear from
Colin Ward.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
That the Ice did out.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
They did lead in one category today that was face
off wins and you mentioned Gallaher being out is a
big it says thirty nine to thirteen. Again, that seems crazy.
Apparently Jacobrien only won one of sixteen.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
I don't know how that is.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Yeah, and they also have Ethan Zada winning fourteen or fourteen.
Speaker 7 (11:24):
So.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
I mean we saw Jacobrian beat Ethan Zada on a
face off right in front of us.
Speaker 6 (11:31):
So, I mean, that's all I'm gonna say.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Riley Patterson was ten to twelve in the dot Ivan
Gallian off ten of twelve and Ethan Zada was we'll
put in an asterisk, I guess fourteen or fourteen. But
again that's one of the strong points of his game.
So again, nice to see there. But that was really
the only, I guess thing that you could say the
Ice Dogs really controlled over the Bulldogs tonight. In every
(11:54):
single aspect of the game. The Bulldogs were just better,
simply flat out.
Speaker 6 (11:57):
You know, yeah, yeah they were.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
They were better, right, And you know, I definitely think
the Ice Dogs won the category of face offs. I
don't think it was that lopsided, but but I definitely
think they were a little bit better in the circle tonight.
And and to be successful, you got to be able
to start with the puck more often than not.
Speaker 6 (12:13):
And and I.
Speaker 5 (12:14):
Mean that's that again shows you the Bulldogs that if
they don't start with the puck, they're gonna find every
way possible to get it back as quick as possible.
Speaker 6 (12:21):
So so you saw that as well in this game.
Speaker 5 (12:23):
Just the Bulldog's ability to Yeah, they lost the drop,
but they can get the puck back and and for
the ice dogs, that just means you have to little
bit be a little bit better protecting it. And again
that's something I'm sure that that Arching company will go
over on video saying hey, yeah, look at this, we
we got this face off. This is what happened immediately
after and what led to a turnover. What could we
have done differently in that situation. I'm sure that'll be
(12:45):
a big talking point. They led in the face off
top but then nothing came of it.
Speaker 6 (12:49):
Yeah, what I mean exactly.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
So it's one of those things where again a statistic
is only a statistic. It doesn't how does it relate
to what actually happened in the play. Yeah, so again
we're gonna take that statistic with a very much of
a grain assault tonight. But we'll move on to our
scoring summary tonight brought to you by the Niagre Deployment
Health Center, helping people find work in Niagres since nineteen
eighty three. Check out there today job ord A, EHC,
(13:11):
dot and dotz to find your next work opportunity Today.
As you mentioned, Reese, that shorthanded goal by Merrick Van
Acker first of his three goals on the night, a
short handed goal. I think it was a three on
two kind of cut to the center, and that to me,
that was one that I think your Malenko does have
an opportunity to stop. But it gets the Bulldogs on
the board and really a big momentum shift in the game.
Because Niagra's on the power play, they they might be
(13:33):
able to get the lead, which is something they haven't
done since October thirty first against Brampton, So you know
that they wanted to get off to a hot start.
Cole Cooks he had a goal waved off by the
way that I forgot to mention. It was deemed that
he kicked the puck in. So the Ice Dogs, you know,
as opposed to having a lead, they're down once again,
and it was only the first of many for the
del hih Ontario's Merrick van Acker.
Speaker 5 (13:55):
Oh, Colin, I'll love that one. The Yeah, I mean,
it's it. That's what the Bulldogs can do. They're they're
so dangerous and they're so deep that you have to
be aware shorthanded, and for the Bulldogs, it's it's hard
for the best NHL team to have an odd man
rush shorthanded and even for the Bulldogs, right, and again
that goes to Niagara. Maybe guys just getting a little
(14:16):
bit too deep and not being ready to get back,
not recognizing what's gonna happen in the offensive zone. So yeah,
just unfortunate for the Ice Dogs because you give up
a short handed odd man rush. Something really bad went wrong.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Yeah, it definitely was not.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
And I think that was one of the power plays
where the Ice Dogs had five forwards on the ice.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
And yeah, again when.
Speaker 6 (14:37):
That defenseman, Yeah, that is a double.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
Edged sword because yes, you have the offensive capabilities, but
then you're also susceptible to way more short handed opportunities
for the other team. And we've seen the Ice Dogs
multiple times this year with that five man forward unit
on the power play give up short handed goals.
Speaker 6 (14:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:53):
Well, and in those situations, I think you also need
to say from your goaltender, you know, understanding that some
odd man rushes might happen having five forwards on the ice.
You know, they're not used to skating backwards hard, trying
to block lanes on a rush shits. Normally you like
to have that one defenseman out there for that reason,
but also too, like I said, you're hoping that your
(15:15):
goaltender can come up with a save in that situation.
And like you said, it was probably one that your
Malanco would like back because he did have a really
good opportunity to make a save, just didn't And that happens,
but I think you'd really like a save in that spot.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Nigger's now giving up the most shorthanded goals against in
the Ontario Hockey League now tied with the saganaw Spirit
was six. So again, when they're trying to work through
a power play that's working at the last last in
the Ontario Hockey League, that's kind of going hand in
hand correlated there, But moving forward, a really nice goal
by Adam Rchek on the power play, a really nice
cross ice feed from Jk O'Brien finding Adam Bannock with
(15:51):
the really nice touch pass to ear check. And again
that one was just a one time bomb. And I'm
not even going to blame the goaltending on that one.
That was just a really nice setup, you know, near
the near the high slot, you know, started off with
Jake O'Brien and just got to tip your cap to
him on that one. And then later in the second
meric van Aker gets a second goal from medicine angle
to make it three nothing before the end of the second.
Speaker 6 (16:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
Two goals that that the Bulldogs. That those are goals
they weren't getting over the last couple of weeks. It
was you know, teams like for Flint and and Brampton
where the Bulldogs just couldn't get the next one. To
find a way to help put the opponent away, and
and to get the next one just five minutes after
van Acker opened the scoring from from your check and
then to get that third one, I think that was
(16:34):
big for for the Bulldogs. Right, you get into a
situation where if Niagara gets one, it's a one shot game.
And you know, I mentioned the stretch hadn't been awesome
for the Bulldogs over the last two weeks. You know,
does some doubts start to creep in a little bit.
I'm sure it doesn't, but uh, you know, it just
it's in the back of your mind. And I think
for them to get those two to end the end
(16:55):
the second period up by three was was pretty big.
Speaker 7 (16:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
And van Acker just to really nice move turn the
defender inside.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
Out for twenty goal the season.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
You know, we'll tip your cap to UH to the
Chicago Blackhawks prospect and again he's been kind of going
through it lately and he really came back with a
solid rebound performance tonight. And then in the third period
Bulldogs opened the scoring twenty eight seconds in to that
period to make it for nothing, and Van Acker adds
his hat trick later on a two on one with Banock.
But that top line was all plus four tonight with Bannock,
(17:28):
O'Brien and Van Acker, and.
Speaker 4 (17:30):
To me, that was that was really the downfall for
the Ice Dogs.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
I know the bulldogs other lines contributed a lot in
this game, but that top line for the Bulldogs really
took over tonight.
Speaker 6 (17:39):
Yeah, they did.
Speaker 5 (17:40):
Those are those are three drafted uh NHL ers that
they will be NHLers in the future. Van Acker, O'Brien
first rounders. Bannock if he's three inches taller as the
first rounder, but he was taken in the fourth round
by the Minnesota Wild so and even Jay mcke had
mentioned that give him a give him more height.
Speaker 6 (17:58):
He's the first rounder.
Speaker 5 (17:59):
So so yeah, I mean it's hard to match up
against those guys, and even on the road for the Bulldogs,
it seems like they've got the advantage matching lines. Hey,
that gives credit to Jay McKee and how really good
he is at doing that, but also how tough it
is four opponents to match those three guys. It's really
difficult to and you're gonna have your top guys. You
(18:21):
want line one versus line one. But this is a
much different first line than we're used to seeing around
the league.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
And that's even with a guy like Nick Lartis with
a season yeah last.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
Year, yeah when think about he could have been back
for an OA season, but he's thriving in Rockford right now,
so so credit to him.
Speaker 6 (18:37):
He's not coming back.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
And from the Ice Dog side of things, reached before
we hit the brake, and we're gonna hear from Ice
Dog's head coach Chris Bartch on the other side, when
you look at the Ice Dogs defensively, and I know
Colin Ward pointed this out to us text and throughout
the game, it just seemed like the Ice Dog's defensive
structure in this game, the Bulldogs after that first period,
they really found those those empty seams where they were
(18:59):
just being able to get into the scoring areas, and
the Ice Dog's defensive coverage just was not there. And
that's something that Chris BArch had talked to us about
last week on our Dog Pound podcast, was they just
need to play better in their end zone. And he
challenged his veteran defenseman last week that they need more
from them and they need to do a better job
(19:20):
when the other team has the puck in their end
to being able to get it out and not have
to lab these sustained long shifts in the offensive zone
for the other team, tiring them out, trying to get
a whistle and things like that and putting a lot
of pressure on your goaltender.
Speaker 4 (19:32):
So from what you.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
Saw tonight, and again I know the Bulldogs do this
to a lot of different teams. Again when you look
at at what they've been able to do, But was
there anything specific that you saw within this game that
shows just I guess what the Ice Dogs can learn
as to how they need to play when you're going
up a team against a team like this and to
bend but not break.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
Yeah, I think the big thing is is to not
play scared or don't play on your toes. You know,
just because the Bulldogs are number one in the OHL,
just because they're number one in the CHL and we
talk about it, Colin and I talk about it all
the time. We've heard Jay McKee mention it, these power
rankings being absolutely nothing. You know, it's it's it's an
(20:14):
ego ranking. When you look at it just builds up
an ego and sometimes egos the enemy. So so you
can't really look at that. If you're the Ice Dogs,
you can't play like you're playing I don't know, the
Colorado Avalanche of a few years ago when they want
to Stanley Cup. You know, the best team in NHL history,
the two thousand and two Detroit Red Wings. You can't
(20:35):
act like you're playing those teams. It's just it's another night.
It's another OHL team. These players are in the league
for a reason, just like you guys are, and you
just have to stay calm and play calm, you know.
I thought that at times they got running around in
the offensive zone, and like you said, the Bulldogs they
do this. They've done this to a few teams so
far this year. But for the Ice Dogs, I think
(20:56):
if you play a little bit more commoner in your
own zone, you're not running around as much. You're in
your spot and trust your spot. Trust what Chris BArch
is telling you. You mentioned about that being something they
want to improve on mensely, is they're playing their own zone. Well,
trust the spot you're in and where Chris Barts wants
you to be. You know, you don't have to cover
(21:18):
the entire zone at once. You know, if you've got
a long enough wingspan, you've got your stick out in
a lane. You know it's on the ice, it's it's
in a good spot. Trust where you are, don't go
running around, don't go puck chasing, but also don't get
puck watch cap puck watching. So so I think that's
the big thing for the Ice Dogs is playing a
(21:39):
little bit more common your own zone. Don't play intimidated
and and just just trust where you are and trust
what your coach is preaching.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
To you, and don't get beat inside, which is yeah,
that's killer. When you've got a team like Branford that
has these guys that in tight you know, it's it's
almost automatic.
Speaker 6 (21:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (21:55):
Yeah, the the middle of the ice against the Branford Bulldogs,
if that's open, puck's gonna be in your net.
Speaker 6 (22:00):
Yeah. Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
So we're going to take a quick commercial break on
Today Show we're gonna comea We're gonna hear from Ice
Dog's head coach Chris BArch and wrap up the show
as well.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
So stay right here.
Speaker 1 (22:08):
We right back on the Dog Pound Podcast, the official
podcast to your Niagara Ice Dogs, probably reached by Global
Pet Foods, where pets are unannihily part of the family.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
Right back after this.
Speaker 8 (22:17):
Whether you just brought home a new furry member of

Dog Pound podcast was on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok by
(27:00):
searching the Armchair GM Sports Network so respec before we
get to Ice Dog's head coach Chris BArch and his
postgame comments on the game as well. When you look
at it now, the Ice Dogs are gonna await the
Berry Colts in a big divisional matchup coming up on Saturday.
Right now, the Colts are four points at the time
(27:20):
of recording this up on the Ice Dogs. So with
two games in a hand and they have been on
a very good streak as of late, have the Berry Colts.
So the Ice Dogs again, they're going through this losing streak.
They have to find a way because they got kitchen
Er next week as well, and then they have Peterborough
coming in on next Sunday here at the Meridian Center.
But when you go through tough stretches like this and
(27:43):
it seems like when's the next win gonna come? And
you kind of have to earn it After having a
good start to the year, Now you're in the middle
of November and you're still looking for your first win
of the month, Like, how does the how does the
team mentally get through and be able to break through?
And it seems like no matter what they do, it's
not gonna go right right now?
Speaker 5 (28:04):
Yeah, I think at this point, you know, you're on
a long enough streak where you haven't won a hockey game. Uh,
this is easier to say than to actually go out
and do. But just just treat every day like a
new day. You know, it's you can't act like you're
playing like tonight. You can't act like you're playing the
top seed to Branford Bulldogs. Yes, it's a tough opponent.
(28:24):
All teams in the OHL are you can't take any
night off. But but you just got to go out
and play the game. You got to go out and
play a hard sixty minutes. You can't let your foot
off the gas pedal by by any means.
Speaker 6 (28:35):
You know.
Speaker 5 (28:36):
It's it's the Barry Colts who are who are hot.
Like you said, they'll be coming in on Saturday, albeit
they are in action Friday Friday night in Eerie, so
you hope to catch a few tired bodies on the
Colts roster. However, we know Marty Williamson and yeah he's
not behind the bench, he's in the front office now,
but we know what his teams are like, and they're
(28:56):
not going to take nights off either. So you just
just got to a hard sixty. Really, it is that simple.
You know, Kevin, he missed a couple of games, so
this might have been a gotta get my uh, gotta
get back up to speed a little bit and I'll
be good to go for Saturday. But that's the way
you gotta treat it. You can't think about this one
too much longer. You'll look at your video. You'll you'll
(29:17):
learn from this one. But but you got to move
on and move on to Saturday. And I think that'll
start probably tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow morning if they decide
to skate in.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
The morning, and you're gonna be losing Ryan Roebrick to
the cho USA Prospects Challenge next week. So yeah, you're
gonna have to figure things out without him in the
lineup again. Some other guys are gonna have to step
in and step up into bigger roles. We've seen with
Kevin he Out, Ryerson Edgar was gone, you know, before
Brady Watson was traded. He was out for a begin
at the beginning of the year, and you had to
rely on some of these other guys throughout the lineup.
(29:47):
The the the Alex Hages, the Jacob Monks of the
world who was not in the lineup tonight, the Cole
Cookxes of the world that need to step into these
bigger roles when their name is called upon when some
of your big stars are out.
Speaker 5 (29:59):
Yeah, injuries are part of the game. He can't use
it as an excuse. Chris BArch will say the same thing. Yeah,
we're hurt, but a lot of other teams have guys
that are out right now too, so it's not an excuse,
and you're right, it's an opportunity.
Speaker 6 (30:11):
I heard a good quote the other day.
Speaker 5 (30:13):
I can't remember who said it, but it was a
head coach in the NHL and he said, I don't
think I've ever had a player say he doesn't want
an opportunity for a bigger role. And if he ever
heard that, well, you have a one way ticket to
the minor leagues, to the American Hockey League, right.
Speaker 6 (30:27):
It's it's it's about the next man up.
Speaker 5 (30:29):
You got to have that mentality right when you're struggling,
when you can't find a way to get a win.
Speaker 6 (30:34):
It it just.
Speaker 5 (30:35):
Has to be an ugly one, you know, an ugly
goal in front of the net, an ugly win. Who
cares if you get out shot? Who cares if you
lose the face off battle? If you have more goals,
that's all that matters. So it might have to just
be an ugly one by guys that step up and
and fill that role. When when Roebrick leaves, so he
saw it with Kevin he out for the last couple
of games before this, someone had to step up. Right, No,
(30:58):
he'd scored a couple of goals. Yeah, you just can't
leave that spot open.
Speaker 6 (31:01):
You can't.
Speaker 5 (31:02):
Somebody's got to move into it. So that's the way
you gotta look at it. It's an opportunity for someone
to make some noise and earn more ice time and
key spots in the game, whether that's late trying to
kill off a late penalty, whether that's trying to tie
the game with the empty net, like, these are the
moments where you earn your ice time in those spots
when you do move up for guys that are out.
Speaker 6 (31:23):
So that's that's what you gotta do. You got to
look for an opportunity and grab it.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
And then you know teams are gonna be losing players
in December for the World Juniors, They're gonna, like other
teams have to overcome this too at some point. So
the Ice Dogs are no different and they're a team
that they have to have that organizational depth. And we've
seen Frankie Vola, the general manager, make a lot of
trade so far and a lot of big moves. So
we'll see how sort of this displays out going into December.
But let's get to Ice Dog's head coach Chris Bartch
(31:49):
and his postgame comments. As always, it brought to you
by Wile Bill's out of Repair, help me customers stay
safe and confident on the road in Nagresses twenty twelve
and honor the late William Robert Hunter. Here's what the
Ice Dog's head coach had to say about his team's
performance to against the Branford Bulldogs.
Speaker 10 (32:06):
Obviously a big test for you guys today, number one
team in Canada. You know how difficult is it to
play a team like that?
Speaker 7 (32:13):
I don't know if it's difficult. I loved our first period.
Wanted more of our first period. You know what we
we again, you know, you got the power play, we
got a shorthanded goal against. We've tried to take every
player at the top of the power play on our team,
so you know, we're at the point now where you know,
what do you do? But again we need tracking. You
(32:36):
know that you can't let a short hand goal a lot,
so you know that does kill momentum for you. And
then they got you know, special teams one timer and
then again just some mistakes off the rush. We gotta,
you know, again, continue to develop our players, continue to
you know, show up to practice and and improve them
(32:57):
or continue to to to make to support the oath
in them. Uh. You know, we had some young mistakes.
We had some uh you know, I guess outskilled elements.
And you're looking at that decor. On the other side,
it's American Hockey NHL DCR. Like you call a spade
a spade, they're they're elite, their first round NHL picks
(33:20):
multiple Uh, they all could be in the American hockey
right now.
Speaker 9 (33:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (33:26):
So that's what you know, Really, if you if you
look at what you're playing against, then what what the
stimulus is? Hey? I always look at it, you know,
from a positive perspective.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
I love the first period.
Speaker 7 (33:38):
Loved the first period. I thought we played defensive and
then again or sorry detailed, and then again we get
away from it. We turn punks over again, make young,
unstructured mistakes, and they'll make you pay for it.
Speaker 6 (33:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (33:52):
I mean, you know, sports could be you know, momentum
one way, momentum the other way. You've lost six in
a rowna, how do you make sure guys don't get
down on themselves, can start thinking about things like that.
Speaker 7 (34:01):
Honestly, for me, it's just it's a daily investment. It's
a reset every day. If you live life based on
what happened five years ago, you live life, or based
on what happened two years ago, you're not gonna live life.
You know. I always say in sports you need a
short memory in the face of success and failure. And
(34:22):
a lot of times it's more so failure, but you
need that short memory because you know what, it's what
you do that day. It's not what you did yesterday. Absolutely. Yeah.
Speaker 10 (34:32):
One thing, you know, the players that want to aspire
to be playing in the NHL play in America, like
you said, Winni Memorial Cup, they can see.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
How good they have to be.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
When you see a team.
Speaker 10 (34:40):
Like this, can that give them a kind of an
eye opening experience where it's like, you know what, this
is how good we have to be.
Speaker 4 (34:46):
We want to get you know what.
Speaker 7 (34:48):
They They've got players that have been drafting certain situations. Uh,
They've had players that have had different experiences NHL camps.
You know, they've earn certain elements that some of our
players having worked. So yeah, I guess it is auh
a stimulus that you know, shows them where they maybe
wanna be and and and what it takes to get there. Yeah,
(35:10):
in one way's the yards that where you are right
now compared to the number one team in Canada. Yeah yeah,
you know, well, like I said, if I take the
positive others, I loved, I loved our first period that
we played, uh, structure that we played together.
Speaker 6 (35:23):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (35:23):
And then again we just cannot allows some of those
unstructured elements.
Speaker 6 (35:31):
You know you can.
Speaker 7 (35:32):
We can't do it to ourselves. Shorthanded goal against uh.
Speaker 6 (35:35):
You know.
Speaker 7 (35:37):
Y getting beat off the rush, you know, multiple occasions,
some mistakes away from the play that result in out
number rush is uh. You know again it's it's back
to teaching, you know, back to investing.
Speaker 6 (35:49):
How much of a blow was that no goal?
Speaker 7 (35:53):
I well, it wasn't a goal, so uh, you know
for me again, you move on. You're right, You look
at the next shift, you look at created your next break.
For me to sit there and say, oh, you know
we lost, will meet him from an own goal?
Speaker 6 (36:06):
Was it a goal?
Speaker 7 (36:06):
So? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (36:09):
How do you keep your Malanko spirits up because obviously
you know the team in front of him maybe you know,
let him down on a few of those goals tonight
and making sure that his confidence is still high even
though it was five nothing in the scoresheet.
Speaker 7 (36:19):
You know what, Ryan Loidzigur goaling coach does a great
job with with our goaltenders. He does great job, you know,
creating that mindset. You know, again a reset for him.
You know, you could only worry about what you can control.
Maybe that's not some of the elements or mistakes in
front of you or in front of him. So again,
you know, like I said, roy Ldsy does a fantastic job.
(36:41):
He'll have him reset and ready to go here for
for his next start.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
As far as what they were doing out there, and
you said the first period was was good, but then
when you get into the second and the third period
and it seems like they had an easier time sort
of getting into the into the middle of the ice
there into those great a scoring chances. So what do
you guys have to do defensively to really lock down
and really you know, play a good style against a
team like that when they can just come in waves.
Speaker 7 (37:03):
Yeah, again, you gotta play inside out. You've got to
take care of that slot, that house. We've got to
come back and stop. We've gotta get in shooting lanes.
We've got to battle again, you get back to the
drawing board. You know, we did implement we were a
man on man, so we did implement on boxing one
system probably about a week ago. So there there are
(37:24):
gonna be some holes in that for the for the
you know if and see stages of change. Uh so
we expect you and know that, you know, we'll refine
that there were some real positives within that box of
one that we played and again just constantly teaching you'll
get back to the get back to the drawing board.
We've got a game here in two days, which nice.
(37:44):
It's a quick turnaround, so again we gotta look at
earning that positive feeling.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
And lastly, you got your captain back in the lineup
after being out the illness this last weekend and you've
got basically your full line up here. I know Roebrook's
gonna be leaving for the USA CCHL Prospect Challenge, but
with this lineup in this team really being the group
that you're going to have going forward, you know what
does it say to knowing that these are gonna be
the guys in that room and they have to figure this
out and get out of this funk.
Speaker 7 (38:10):
Yeah, you know what they're all eye character individuals, they're
all high functioning people and players.
Speaker 6 (38:16):
So we'll be.
Speaker 7 (38:18):
Fine, We'll find a way and again we will move
on past this, and we got a big game against Barry.
We've got forty seven games left in the year, which
is a lot of games. So you know, there'll be
a lot of different talks that you and I will
have over the next while and hopefully and I know
we'll be a lot more positive and they will be negative.
So thanks.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
There was Ice Doug's head coach Chris BArch on the
Wild Bills out of repair post game race. Again, when
your team loses five nothing on the score sheet, it's
hard to come out and think of positives. But it
seemed like Chris BArch definitely had some things that he
wanted to talk about. He talked about the power play.
They've tried every player really on there to try to
(39:01):
get that turned around. He gave you know, the flowers
to the Branford Bulldogs, saying it was basically an American
Hockey League decor and team they're playing against over there,
and they got to play inside out better and keep
a team like Branford to the outside, which we kind
of talked about earlier, and the last thing from me
was he said, we'll be fine. There's forty seven games left.
(39:22):
Again like the positivity, but again, they really have to
clean up some of this stuff.
Speaker 5 (39:28):
Yeah, yeah, And I like what he said about what
they're implementing in their defensive zone with the with the
box and and you know, keeping guys away from the
middle and keeping them to the outside. And that's what
the box is. Right, you're gonna have a guy try
to sneak into the middle. It's just you got to
make the adjustment on the fly. It's not oh, well,
you know we practiced the box in practice, we got
(39:48):
to stay in the box.
Speaker 6 (39:49):
It's like, well, no, you have to make the adjustment
on the fly.
Speaker 5 (39:51):
Yes, the box is your starting point, that's where you
work off of. But you see a guy sneak into
the middle, it's not just well, I got to stay
in my spots. It's making an adjustment and making sure
that there aren't any open shots there. And and again
he said it's something that's just starting to there. They're
starting to implement during the process of you know, getting
regular reps with it, and you're not gonna get great
(40:14):
results right away. It's it's impossible. It it's gonna take time.
You might not see it work for another month, which yeah,
I would suck and seems.
Speaker 6 (40:24):
Like a very long time.
Speaker 5 (40:26):
But you know, it's it's not something that you're gonna
see an improvement on overnight. So so I I really
took that away, and and and and again, He's right,
look at the guys you were playing against. On the
other side. I mentioned the top line. All three guys
are drafted. Danford was a first rounder. On the back end,
you're a check. It's is really good. Dravetsky wasn't expected
to be a Bulldog this year. They get lucky and
(40:46):
he comes over Angle coming up from the States, and
and Pratts, who's a drafted guy, and it's just they
got out worked by a better team.
Speaker 6 (40:57):
The Bulldogs were just were just better. You know.
Speaker 5 (41:00):
I liked that the Ice dogs three shots might not
indicate a great first period, but I think we talked
about that earlier where that really doesn't make a huge
difference what the shots were. They could have been from
way out if you have twenty of them, and they
weren't dangerous at all. So, you know, I I thought
the start was good, but it just seemed like they
only played twenty minutes and that was it, and and
(41:22):
the Bulldogs took advantage of that, like he said, on
some of the young mistakes that the Ice Dogs made.
Speaker 1 (41:27):
Yeah, and again it with that first period was kind
of sloppy to watch at times, Like it was.
Speaker 4 (41:32):
It wasn't.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
It wasn't really like the Ice Dogs controlled the play
and held the Bulldogs to like nine shots, you know
what I mean.
Speaker 6 (41:38):
It was.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
It was one of those periods where I think both
teams would want to be better. It was just sort
of like a feeling out period. There wasn't a lot
of other than the Cooks e goal that got waved off.
Speaker 4 (41:48):
You know, it was I.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
Didn't I didn't necessarily see exactly. Like obviously it was
a good period because they didn't give up a goal.
But to me, like three shots on net is not.
It tells me that they weren't controlling the pace of
play in the period either.
Speaker 4 (42:03):
It was they weren't.
Speaker 1 (42:03):
They were bending but not breaking the you know in
neutral zone play. A lot of a lot of stuff
just sloppy. Again on the Bulldog side of things, as
they're trying to really work through. Uh, not the best
week that they would have wanted last week, and then
they got it right in the last forty minutes. So,
you know, the the Ice Dogs have had a hard
time starting on time as of late. As I mentioned,
they haven't scored the first goal since late October in
(42:24):
a game. So it's you start on time and then
what do you do going forward?
Speaker 6 (42:29):
Yeah, yeah, that's exactly it.
Speaker 5 (42:31):
And that's what that's what you got to do against
teams like Branford, against teams like Barry you get the
Western Conference coming in if it's winsor if it's London
Owen sound who Who's Who's played really well early on.
Speaker 6 (42:43):
In the season.
Speaker 5 (42:44):
Like you you just you have to start on time.
Kind of sounds like a Mike Babcock line, but but
you have to right from right from puck drop and
and sure, yeah, was scoreless after twenty minutes.
Speaker 6 (42:56):
Ice Dogs didn't really carry the play.
Speaker 5 (42:58):
You know, I thought they did a fairly decent job
of limiting high are highly dangerous scoring opportunities for the Bulldogs.
But other than that, three shots is an awesome Ryerson
landers This might be one of the easiest shutouts he's
ever had. Maybe one dangerous chance in the first period,
and that was it for the Ice Dogs and that's
just not enough through twenty minutes.
Speaker 6 (43:20):
So yeah, it's it's you can look at it as
zero zero, take that as a positive. It is what
it is. The Bulldogs still controlled the pace.
Speaker 4 (43:30):
In that period, Yeah they did.
Speaker 1 (43:31):
And the Ice Dogs have to get this thing corrected
because they got the Barry Colts coming in on Saturday
night right here at the Meridian Center. But before we
get out of here, we're gonna put Reese on the
spot with our stick Tap of the Game, brought to
you by butt Ends hockey stick grip specifically for the
top end of the stick, designed to replace traditional cloth tape.
Check them out a butt Ends that's with a z
dot com and use our referral code arm sure GM
to get ten percent off your first order Buttons a
(43:52):
number one grip in hockey. Reese, I know, in a
five to nothing game, it's hard to pick a player
of the game on the ice Dog side, But do
you have any Anyboddy that you thought, you know, looked
decent tonight.
Speaker 5 (44:03):
Yeah, I'm gonna be pretty honest with this one, and
Ice Dog fans might not be a huge fan of
me after this one. It's weird to say the goalie's
gonna get the stick tap after giving up five. But
the amount of mistakes that the Ice Dogs had, allowing
odd man rushes into their own zone, they hung year
(44:24):
Malanco out to dry.
Speaker 6 (44:26):
You know. There there was not one skater for the
Ice Dogs that I said, you know what.
Speaker 5 (44:30):
He quietly had a good game despite the score. They
were all just eh, you know, I don't want to
say they were passengers to the game. But nothing really
stood out for me from any of the skaters from
the Ice Dogs, right. It was it was your Malanco
making key saves and keeping the Ice Dogs in it
for about half the game or so. And then and
then that third goal goes in, and then fourth and
(44:52):
fifth and the third. But it's got to be your Malanco.
He didn't get any help, and he made some key
saves twenty eight out of thirty three. Yeah, that doesn't
look sexy on paper, but you didn't have any help
in front of them.
Speaker 6 (45:03):
So that that's my thing.
Speaker 5 (45:05):
It's I not one skater, you know, opened my eyes,
Not one skater made me go, you know what.
Speaker 6 (45:12):
I liked his game tonight.
Speaker 5 (45:13):
It was, like I said, the best word to describe
that is they were meh, like there was nothing special.
Speaker 7 (45:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (45:20):
I think I mentioned in the first segment, this could
have been an eight to nine to nothing game in
favor of the Bulldogs if not for your Milenka with
a couple of those big saves he made in the
second period when the Bulldogs are really starting to take
take it to them in that game and really apply
apply the pressure. So I'm in Agreeance, I think your
Malinka was the Ice Dog's best player tonight. Again, he's
not gonna want to want that given up five goals,
but again, you know, credit where credits do. The Bulldogs
(45:43):
definitely had some some high danger scoring chances.
Speaker 6 (45:45):
Yeah, that's the thing.
Speaker 5 (45:46):
Like goals against on the score sheet, you're immediately going
to turn to goaltending. But the amount of two on ones,
three on twos the Bulldogs had, I mean, you got
to have defense somewhere, right, and and it just didn't
seem like they were around at all times today.
Speaker 4 (46:02):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (46:02):
So the Ice Dog's got to turn the page quickly
on this one because, as I mentioned, they got Barry
coming in and then they got to go to Kitchener
next week, so it doesn't get any easier, and they
got to break out of this six game funk that
they're in right now, get the power play back going,
and get some sort of momentum here. But Reese Domini
from the dog Cast, one half of the dog Cast,
along with Colin Ward on the Bulldogs Audio and netw're
res thanks so much for keeping me company up here
(46:23):
tonight and then also being able to give the analysis
on the postgame show of course.
Speaker 6 (46:27):
Brandon.
Speaker 5 (46:27):
Yeah, I always always enjoy hopping on with you here again.
I love this, barn I love coming to the Meridian Center.
It's for me convenient because it's ten minutes away from
where I live. You know, it's an hour and five
hour and ten minutes to the TD Civic Center in Brantford.
Maybe a little bit longer because they stupidly started construction
during the busiest downtown part of.
Speaker 6 (46:49):
The year, But I digress. I appreciate it. Brandon. Always
always happy to hop on.
Speaker 1 (46:55):
Yeah, and it's usually in a Bulldog's victory as of late,
so maybe.
Speaker 5 (46:59):
We need Hey, I'm I mean, so, you know how
the Red Sox had the Curse of the Bambino. I
think this is like the curse of the rambino like
Reese or Reese Bino.
Speaker 6 (47:11):
Yeah, no, that sounds stupid. Maybe Rambino is better.
Speaker 5 (47:14):
I mean, the Ice Dogs have won twice since I
stopped being an intern for the Ice Dogs and started
covering the Bulldogs, whether it was for TSN eleven fifty
in Hamilton or just on the oytel and sixty podcast
of the Dogcast, they won twice and it was both
last year, one of which I called I think that
was a five hundredth win in franchise history that I had,
(47:36):
so credit to me for that.
Speaker 6 (47:38):
But yeah, the curse of the Rambino. We're gonna go
with that.
Speaker 1 (47:42):
Yeah, Ice Dog fans light Reese's Twitter up. Oh man,
if you you want to make sure that he's you.
Speaker 6 (47:48):
Go where the money is. Yeah, TSN was panned me.
Speaker 1 (47:52):
That's gonna wrap it up for another nag or Ice
Dog's game recap right here on the Dog Pound podcast,
the official podcast the year Nager Ice Dogs, probably right
to by Global PEPs where pets are unannihially part of
the family and their three Great Niagara region locations. Again,
thank you to those that tuned in on our armshare
GM Sports Network YouTube channel. I knows who listened on
your favorite on demand audio platform the next day. So
for Reestimania of the Dogcast, my name is Bannon Caputo.
Speaker 4 (48:14):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (48:15):
The Bulldogs take it five nothing in front of threeenty
twenty seven here at the Meridian Center and be back
Saturday night. Barry Cults are in town for a big
Central Division matchup, So that's gonna be it. We'll talk
to you again next week on the Dog Pound Podcast,
the official podcast
Speaker 4 (48:26):
Of your Niagarace Dogs
