(01:05):
July twenty fifth, and we met a few years ago
in Texas when he was down here doing a slow
of shows down here too. It's called Varsity Blues across
all the DSPs. Clayton mullin to the show, Clayton, what's up, brother?

Speaker 4 (01:16):
What's up?

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Brandon? Thanks for having me on. I'm pumped to catch up.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Hey, dude, It's gonna be great to catch up. That's
the best part of doing these shows. And I know
a ride it's been on since I started this in
twenty nineteen. You guys, actually before you were doing music,
and take everybody back to that story, because it was
at TCU you had been a track through this thing
for a long time songwriting. How all this kind of
came in a nutshell because in college, man, take people

(01:41):
back to the story of how you became a musician.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
I think it's fascinating.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, So I went to TCU to pursue a degree
in business marketing and entrepreneurship, and somewhere along the way
I picked up a guitar and started writing some songs
in my college dorm room, and you know, we kind
of faked it till we made it.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
We played a.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Bunch of shows to nobody into just college kids in
the back of college, you know, backyards and tailgates and
all that stuff. And then one thing led to another
and we had the opportunity to support some of the
real acts torn around Texas. And after that, I made
a leap of faith, graduated and moved to Nashville to
pursue a full time.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
When you look back at that move now, obviously records
that have had huge millions of streams and things like
that too. When you look back at it now, probably
one of the best moves you ever made to take
it to music city, right.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
I think so?

Speaker 4 (02:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
I think I'd be pretty pissed off with myself if
I want to work at a corporate job instead of
dimming this.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah, I'm with you all that too. One of the
questions I was gonna ask you the end, if you
were doing music, what else would you be doing? But
I'm glad you chose music there too, And I'm like you,
I don't really care for the corporate jobs. That's why
I do this full time now, which is great out there.
No disrespect for people that have them too out there.
I just love what I do. Let's talk about Varsity
Blues about to kick one off here the title track
itself too. How this came about? Man, some great writing

(02:56):
and just all these great songs off this EP that
fans can now enjoy.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, So Varsity Blues is my APA, just put out
as you said, July twenty fifth, and it's just been
a long time coming. One of the write songs that
will take listeners into a little bit of me growing up.
You know, those prime years from like sixteen to twenty.
It's that you know, you're experiencing a lot of first times,
like falling in love, getting your heart broken for the
first time, you know, you and your buddies, going and

(03:23):
trying to win state and falling short of it and
all that stuff. It's definitely a coming of age project,
and it's something that I've been working on for a
while now sometime for listeners to have it. But I
keep saying, it's got like a Friday Night's Friday Night
Lights feel to it, So I hope listeners can put
their own stories to my stories.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, looking back to being able to tell stories like that, say,
I love it because sports and music are so integrated.
Now when you look back at it, the work I
think it takes to do one, it takes you just
the same amount, if not more, to do the other.
Looking back, you're an athlete yourself. Did you played ball
in college? And looking back at it or high school?

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Was football your sport was a sport that kind of
attractive to you?

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah, So my dad played college football and baseball, and
football was a big sport for me growing up, but
I didn't play it in high school. I think I
had too many head injuries to keep to keep playing it.
So I switched over to basketball, and basketball became my
main sport and played it all throughout high school. And
you know, maybe I could have gone and played somewhere
D three, but I wanted to go experience a the

(04:21):
big school vibe. So when I went to TCU, I
became full, you know, just a football fan, a sports fan,
and we kept playing the Innermurals and Rex stuff throughout
that whole time. But I definitely, growing up as an athlete,
I saw what the work ethic took to put into it,
and my coaches would always say I was I was
a coach's best, best player or easiest to coach because

(04:43):
I was the hardest worker and I didn't have all
the talent, but I was the kid who's gonna outwork you.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
And you know there are no fifty to fifty balls
out there.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
I think I put in enough effort and I was
gonna hustle harder than the other guy.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
The work ethic is the key out there. What you
put into it is what you get out of it too,
And of course you'll hear it here Varsity Blues clay
Mullin dot com for more information out there too, and
again thanks for our great sponsorship to make the show possible.
Here you hear from them, and just a little bit

(10:55):
single You're Not Mine Varsity Blues. I know you guys
would love that from CLAYT.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
Mullet.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
That's just one of the best things out there to
lead off a record. And let's talk about on there too.
Some other interesting titles we'll get to love on the
radio here in a little bit, but I love the
one that was called the First Time Feeling Last.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
Tell us about this one, how it came about.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
Yeah, First Time Feeling Last is definitely one of my
favorite songs on my projects, and you know it's about
my girlfriend, but it's also about, you know, the first
time you're taking a car for a spin, Like my
mom used to drive a Chevy Suburban and that was
the car I got to drive when I was sixteen.
So the first time you're driving that and you just

(11:32):
got freedom in the gas tanging and can do whatever
you want.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
And then first time, like you get a big sports winner.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
It was just painting all those first pictures in your
growing up in childhood and then tying it in with
the girl at the end.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
But that's the title I had on my phone, playing off.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
The first and last and just how you know when
the right girl comes around, she makes every time feel
like the first time.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
It really is a story, and I love the fact
you put that in your music because that's such a
great thing when it comes to storytelling. You also put
on a record in twenty twenty three, Where the Time Goes.
Looking back at that one and talking about where the
Time Goes with that being in the title track of it,
I don't know where it goes. I've lost track of
it too, but that one and a whole host of
songs kind of recollect a little bit looking back on
that body of work, and I really feel like you

(12:15):
guys really set out to accomplish released a great set
of songs.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
Right yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Where the Time Goes is definitely a project that I
still hold near and dear to my heart because that
was just me figuring out music in life for the
first time.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
I think when I look back some of those songs, I.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Think I was still figuring out how to sing, figuring
out how to write songs. But I think it stands
for that chapter of my life, and I think everybody
of work that I put out will do.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
The same things.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
It's kind of where I'm at and that that spot
creatively and artistically, and you know, I just love building
off that and continue to improve with each project.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
You know, if there's keys, and ask all musicians this,
if there's keys in the business to understand, it's the
music business. And of course it is a huge industry
and a lot of competition out there to get noticed.
What's been that drive or that fuel for you to
kind of get to where you're now at in your career.
You've discovered your sound, you've become the artists you wanted
to become, you're playing live shows, you're doing what you
love to do, and you found that passion.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
What's the key to kind of keep that thing motivated
and keep you going?

Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, so I always just finding someone new, Like once
you I mean, I would say I would challenge it
and say, like you really never feel like you found
yourself and you're always trying to keep pushing for for
more and figuring out what the next chapter is. But
I think just always trying to one up yourself and
write better songs and and you know, dive deeper into
who you are as an artists is what keeps me driving.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
Hey, there's one off the record too, where the time
goes talk about Whiskey on It, which I love this
one too, toward the bottom of the record too, but
definitely one of my favorites.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
Yeah, Whiskey on It was great that I think that
was the first one of the first outside cuts I did.
So I didn't write on that song, but one of
my trips, first trips to Nashville, publisher played it for
me and I just fell in love with it, and
you know, it was another story about heartbreaking. It was
something that I felt was true to me at the time.
So we recorded and put our spin on it, and

(14:06):
it's definitely we opened our show with that for a while,
and it was a big staple for me in my
career at the time.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Well, I tell you what, We're gonna take people line dancing,
because if I was out of the club right now too,
we used to be back in the day when it
was some old bar in the nineties, when I was
actually you know, getting on the dance floor, all that
kind of stuff with the cowboy half came on CLAYT.

Speaker 4 (14:24):

Speaker 3 (14:24):
I find myself on the dance floor. I hope you

one and I was jamming out to your music before
we actually got on air today, I mentioned getting people
out on the dance floor.

Speaker 4 (20:13):
You had to love it as much, I'm sure stepping
in the studio. Uh to record one like love on
the radio, right?

Speaker 2 (20:18):
Oh yeah, I love that song was one of my
favorite songs of this chapter. And you know, it's one
that we started playing in our live set before we
even released it, and just the way that we could
see that being received by the audience was was definitely
telling on how it was gonna be received when we
released it. But you know, it's upbeat, it's about fall
in love, it's you know you can you can let

(20:38):
loose with it, and it's been one of my favorites
to play live and also just to have out in
the world.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
Really is like I said, up tempo, get your girl
out on the dance floor and just really enjoy it,
or I guess guy for that matter too. At the
same time, looking back goes both ways. But I love
it because one of those songs. Can you put all
on drive seventy seventy five down the interstate in your truck.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
It's definitely one of those songs.

Speaker 4 (20:58):
Yeah, I'll wait clips with this speed limit?

Speaker 2 (21:00):
Right?

Speaker 1 (21:00):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (21:01):
When do you get going with that one? Nowhere Tennessee.
Let's get a little backstory on this one.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
Yeah, I know Where Tennessee is a song I've been
one to write for a while too, and it kind
of just talks about the way my girlfriend was raised
and how she has been adapting to the Tennessee lifestyle.
You know, we've been here for a couple of years now,
and she was born and raised just a block from
the beach, So it was just about, you know, how
she's brought her ways into to Texas and then now Tennessee,

(21:28):
and you know, a lot of the imagery there is
really cool and fun for us to share a song
like that.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
You know, looking at all these great songs, and you
mentioned this talk about songwriting your process. Is it come
kind of just natural to you? Do you kind of
look back and think of hooks and examples and going
through real life experiences.

Speaker 4 (21:45):
Take me through your process?

Speaker 1 (21:47):
Yeah, I mean it changes on the day to day.
It depends on what type of song you're writing.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
You know, you always want to write stuff about what
you're going through and things in your life. But sometimes
if you just have a good title and you want
to tell a story, you can kind of run with
that too.

Speaker 1 (22:01):
But songwriting, I think it's I mean, I guess it.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
Comes natural to me because I haven't been doing it
all that long, but I feel like I'm starting to
figure it out. So it's it's just putting you know,
your story and your experience to paper and hoping that
people people will relate to it.

Speaker 3 (22:19):
You would have put it there too. Looking back at
last year, I started at the end title of that
record too. A lot of cool things off of this
I mean numbers talking about millions of streams really kind
of changed the landscape. And this is a gift building
on that first album to the second record right now.
So you give me some highlights off of that one too.
A lot of great songs off of this one too.

Speaker 9 (22:36):
Love it.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
Yeah, start at the end felt like the first shift
in you know, just professionalism for me, like taking a
step up from what we were doing in college. And
that title track was a song Morgan Wallen wrote back
in twenty seventeen with my producer Blake Bollinger, And so
that was an outside song, but that was a song
that I knew was just like a hammer from the

(22:58):
first time I heard it. So that's another song that
we started putting in our live set before putting it
out and just seeing the way it was received by
the fans. You know, it was special, and that project
I'm super proud of and some of my favorite songs
are still on that project. But you know, I'm just
excited to continue to expand off that into the music
that we're putting out right now.

Speaker 3 (23:19):
Yeah, one of the ones I want to highlight off
with her too, was really awesome for the start at
the end record And Grant Gilbert has become a great
songwriter too.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
I'll talk to him here on the program.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
A tremendous writer and artist and is all right things
in college town taught me And I'm sure that's back
to a little bit of the TCU days. How did
the arrangement come with Grant and you guys meeting and
then putting out just a great collapse.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
Yeah, So even before Grant was one of my buddies,
I was just a fan of his music, you know,
being in Fort Worth, I listened to this stuff all
the time and.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
Me and my buddies were just jamming on the balcony.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
So that friendship came naturally when we started playing shows
together and right so, we knew we wanted a song
that would bring together the Texas Tech and TCU rivalry
and kind of talk about our experience growing up and
are more specifically in college and you know, maybe you
don't learn as much in the classroom in college, as
you might learn outside of it. So that was that

(24:09):
was a really fun day when Grant and I got
together to write that one and eventually recorded and put
it out as part of the project.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
Love so Much that email. There's one on there that
that did it for me because I'm so close to
it down here. Of course, you know you where you
worked for Worth rain in Dallas another one of those
story told kind of songs that really sets the mood.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
Yeah, absolutely, that that's another one.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
I think you and I have similar favorite songs on
the project, But Rainy and Dallas that was, you know,
a story about when you're going through a breakup, how
it seems like it seems like there's just like gray
clouds over your head the whole time, and trying to
get away from that and you know, you see how
well off the other person's doing, and just trying to

(24:49):
cope with that fact. But you know, I thought, I
thought that title was super cool and the way we
spun it in the room that day, it was a
lot of fun, and I'm I'm super proud of the
production and and the way that that song turned out.

Speaker 4 (25:01):
Now, we all need a good truck song, right in
country music. That's just part of that box. Yeah, check
that box there.

Speaker 3 (25:09):
We're gonna go to good trucks for Russ to talk
about this because I'm driving one that it's probably ruster
to look it back.

Speaker 4 (25:14):
But those are some of the best country songs.

Speaker 2 (25:16):
Right, absolutely, Yeah, you definitely need those to be in
the country space. But I like the way we spun
that one, just talking about how like even good things
comes in and you might have the shiniest truck at
one point, but in twenty years it's gonna rust and
it's like, you know, we might've had a good thing
back in high school, that doesn't mean that's gonna be
a good thing now. And it's kind of like reflecting
on that and understanding that, like even the best things

(25:39):
in life comes in.

Speaker 4 (25:40):
And so, you know, I've had a chance to see
a lot of the great music videos you put out
to at the same time, talk about just the making
of Varsity Blues that music video and kind of what
you look for in a project and some of the
people you look you look forward to work with to
really bring the song to life.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
Yeah, so you know a lot of that stuff is
done just brainstorming and seeing when you're writing the songs
what you want the imagery and visuals to look like.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
And then you get to bring into life.

Speaker 2 (26:05):
And I think we did a great job with that
on a couple of these or all of these songs, really,
but Varsity Blues is fine. You know, we went back
to a high school football field and film the visualizer,
and I think just what we're going for is that simple,
like all American kid going through a little bit of heartbreak,
and you know we won the game that I lost you.

(26:26):
I thought that was just a great line and it
takes me right back to those those glory days.

Speaker 4 (26:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
I love looking back at Varsity Blues to always look
at artwork, and I love the fact that twenty two
obviously probably synonymous looking back at that too, with that
football field and that jersey. Talk about just the making
and where you guys had the ideas for artwork for
Varsity Blues.

Speaker 4 (26:46):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
Yeah, well I appreciate it, but you know, I just
have this idea of it of the title track being
the team name on the football jersey, and then twenty
two was the number in the song that you know
I was wearing, so we printed that got the custom
made Jersey and I'm going over the bleachers and shot
that photo.

Speaker 4 (27:02):
That's goin to tell the story right there too as well,
no doubt.

Speaker 3 (27:05):
Hey, as we closed here a little bit, I found
myself going to seem A Fest again doing the radio
show live from there. Never a dull moment in Nashville
when it comes to places to eat. Fact, I think
it's like expanding more. There's always some restaurant on.

Speaker 1 (27:16):
Some corners every day. It feels like.

Speaker 10 (27:19):
So.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
I love pizza, and I actually went out there to
Chicago style over there German Town, which you guys are
going to play a big show. We'll talk about it
a little bit. At Nashville Brooklyn Bowl three one two
pizza was really good. I guess when you guys are
out and yeah, three one two pizza. It was actually
pretty good. It was Chicago style cool.

Speaker 1 (27:35):
That's not my techical type of pizza, but I'll have
to I had to try.

Speaker 4 (27:40):
It was just really good.

Speaker 3 (27:40):
Then we had the six Floor Diner, which was just
off Broadway. There, uh, several places. Then I got a
chance to go to some good barbecue. I think Martin's
went by there and had some barbecue one night. Is
that some of your favorite places or Bartaco was really good?
What other places do you like there in town?

Speaker 1 (27:54):
Yeah, Bartaco is great. I think you know some of
my favorite places. I love Bella and Appoli. They got
great Italian stuff.

Speaker 2 (28:00):
You know. If we're doing sandwiches, I love Little Hats,
it's another Italian deli. I love Superica. I think that's
how you pronounce it. But it's Mexican food and the gulch.

Speaker 1 (28:12):
What else?

Speaker 2 (28:13):
I think Barcelona is great. That's a spot burger joint
you gotta get. You can't go wrong with. Jack Brown's
got yea favorite spots.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
Hey, what's the secret taking care of the of the pipes?
Man and a lot of musicians have to take care
of those vocal corts.

Speaker 4 (28:29):
What do you do?

Speaker 2 (28:30):
I got some throat sprays, some honey lozengers, and you
know a lot of water, good sleep, no yelling, steam showers.

Speaker 1 (28:37):
It's a whole.

Speaker 2 (28:38):
It's a science to keep these things, uh, you know,
just safe because you're always writing, singing, yelling, talking, So
it's definitely it's a science to keep them, keep them good.

Speaker 4 (28:52):
All right, If you got a chance, and maybe you
already have a pet, and this is one of the
first ones.

Speaker 3 (28:56):
I just love coming up asking this. There's a pet
you can own out there too. Maybe you have a dog,
great cat?

Speaker 4 (29:00):
What have you?

Speaker 3 (29:01):
Looking back at it, and it's it's one you could,
I guess, pick anything out there you'd want it? What
pet would you kind of would you choose? Interested about that?

Speaker 2 (29:09):
I mean, I could go crazy and pick a weird animal,
but I think right now.

Speaker 1 (29:14):
I would love to have a dog.

Speaker 2 (29:16):
I know my girlfriend would love that, So I think
i'd go with like a goldendoodle or something like that.
I like that.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Okay, all right, there you going on a voice.

Speaker 2 (29:25):
I'm allergic to like long haired dogs, which is I'll
still pet the crop out of them, but just to
keep everything good, I need a hypo atogeny, so we
got to go do thll.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
I like that, Okay, I like that. Had me a
a red Golden Retriever. I lost it last year too,
after about let's say five six years I had it
there too, and I've got a fifteen year old Siberian
Husky which is still kicking.

Speaker 10 (29:47):
Man.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
She's still going out there too. So dog person not
so much a cat person looking back at it too. Hey,
staying on the same lines with the two as we close.
If you could be any spirit animal out there too,
what spirit animal would you be?

Speaker 2 (29:59):
I got a look, do some more research into what
the spirit animals mean, but I think i'd go with
like spirit animal, what is it I'm trying to think.
I think I would go with like a bald eagle
or something all American. Just I'm a big Eagles football fan,
NFL fans. That'd be pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
On that note too, I'd probably be a shark because
I love this. Like I said, just tenacious blood the
water season opportunity type thing too. As one, I'm gonna be,
like I said, the king of the Ocean, no doubt.
But hey, chance to repeat this year. Jalen Hurts. I
coached against him back in Texas.

Speaker 4 (30:33):
It was really amazing to see that guy just blossom
into what he's become.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
We kN would be a great pro athlete too, And
I did say one day he won a Super Bowl
and there you go with Eagles.

Speaker 4 (30:42):
To chance to repeat? Man, all the talent in the world.
Give me some expectations back to back.

Speaker 2 (30:46):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's gonna be. I don't
think it's gonna be as easy as last year. With
that game against Casey just blowing them out. But I
think the Eagles are gonna whoop some ass this year.
I think all the players, you know, it's just.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
One more year.

Speaker 2 (30:57):
If those guys being together, the defense is stronger than ever.
And I think sa Kuon is not gonna have the
matt and curse. He's gonna have another breakout here.

Speaker 4 (31:07):
Yeah, I could see close to another two thousand yards
looking back at that. Of course A J.

Speaker 3 (31:11):
Brown, the weapons, DeVante Smith and so many great weapons on.

Speaker 1 (31:14):
The off line, not many holes in that team.

Speaker 4 (31:18):
There's not defensively really good too.

Speaker 3 (31:20):
And of course out there too, like I said, Lead
one of the best owners in pro football, and they
want to win. Organization has shown they want to win.
They'll and they'll put their money with their mouth is too.
At the same time, and enjoy that. You're gonna enjoy
