com and on iHeartRadio podcasts. It's a grand slam of music, entertainment,

(00:21):
and sports.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
And welcome inside the Backstage Pass.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Of course, always a busy day full of shows, high
school football, college football.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
We do it all here.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
It's a grand slam of music, sports and entertainment powered
by the Sports guysopodcast dot com and out there ninety
eight point one, your Bay Area Broadcasting Network on KYBN,
iHeartRadio podcasts and THWN dot org and of course always
the Sports Guys Podcast dot com. You know, it's Friday,
September twenty sixth, and she's got a brand new record.
We're honored here to have her as our featured artist

(00:49):
of the weekend here and of course going into next week,
October's around the corner. She's ready for this this time
around the wonderful super talented to Colby Kelly to the program.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
How you doing, my friend, H I am so good?

Speaker 4 (01:00):
How are you.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
It is good.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
It's good to be here. The weekend's coming up. We've
got a little bit of hopefully fall weather coming in.
So I think this is like the perfect time of
year to be an athlete or maybe a fan of
a musician such as yourself. I'm just always excited when
fall gets here, right.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
I think we all are. We're all looking forward to it.
We're ready.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Hey, tell us all about it too. I'm gonna get
right at it. Love it. This time around is fantastic.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
A lot of great duets, I mean, Lee Brice and
of course Maddie and Tay Mitchell Tenpenny, of course, Ryan Hurd,
Russell Dickerson, A lot of these artists have been on
the program here with me too. And I love this
because you've put your heart and soul into these songs.
And the latest single is doing well, kind of single
with Lee Lee Brice, tell us all about this new record.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
Oh my gosh, Well thank you for saying that. And yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Reimagined eight songs of my old singles like Brighter than
the Sun and Bubbly and Realize and I Never Told You,
and I wrote three new songs, and I also have
a cover song and I thought about adding, you know,
duets for every song, all twelve songs with my favorite
artists and favorite vocalists. And I have Gavin de Graun

(02:05):
there Amos Lee Lee Brice, Jason Maraz, Maren Morris, friends,
and you know, fellow artists that I've just always admired.
So it's been a two year process and making this
record and it's finally here.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
It is too and how hard is this?

Speaker 3 (02:21):
You know, you guys go through so many trials and
tribulations in the business out there too, and you know,
you've had a lot of hits in your career, had
a lot of success in this music business. Talk about
just how hard it is Colby to kind of keep
the intensity and keep the pressure and keep the focus
on when you're working on the next project and kind
of working toward the next big thing.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, you know, I think, like for everyone, you have
to keep the momentum there, keep the excitement, enthusiasm. This
this process has been really drawn out, and it's been
there's been you know, it's been challenging in some ways
with how long it's taken and with so many different
people to coordinate with, But at the same time, it
keeps it so so much fun and so exciting to

(02:58):
get to work with these artists that I am friends
with and that I love to sing with, and they
also have known my songs for so long now that
they had this nostalgia embedded in these songs with them.
But I think that we all got to just keep
enjoying it as much as we can and stick with it.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, you do.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
And it's perseverance, no doubt about it too. In fact,
we could ask a lot of those questions here on
the show too. You know what it takes to be
an artist, especially for young aspiring artists who are now
getting into it. You've been doing this thing for a
long time. Is there a certain kind of key or
keys that really kind of you know, just stick with it?
Or is it great songs, a writing, a combination of everything.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yeah, definitely a combination. I love to sing, I love
to write, and then you get in the studio and
record the songs, and then you got to you know,
go out and promote them, and then you go on
tour and play shows for them. So it's just kind
of like this cycle that keeps happening, and it all
stems from the therapeutic aspect. Of writing a song and then
getting to end up singing it for people and hear

(03:59):
their reaction to how it really ties into their lives
and their love or heartbreak, whatever it may be.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
And the beautiful thing is that music is therapy right
for everybody, for everyone again, Colby Calay here on the
backstage pass. We gotta play some music here this time
around the current album out there, and of course visit
Colbyclay dot com for all the tour dates and merchandise.
It's kind of single feature Lee Brice Here. It is
from Colby Calai, Hank Tich coming right back the backstage Pass.

time around. Make sure you guys go streaming across all
those DSPs out there, and go buy some merchandise at
Colbykelly dot com. I got a shirt on order t
coming to me, So you guys need to go out
there and support this great artist out there has been
doing it for well over two decades now.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
So this one I love too. I loved it on
your YouTube channel.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
I got to watch the music video Kolby, which was
fantastic and tell us about the arrangement with Lee Brice
and putting out a great song like kind of single.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
I love this, Thank you.

Speaker 16 (10:16):
I love Lee.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
We have mutual friends in Nashville and we booked this
writing session together and he asked my producer before I
got to the studio about my love life, like what
kind of song you think we're going to write today
for her?

Speaker 4 (10:28):
And he's like, I don't know. I think she's kind
of single. And Lee was like that is funny, Like
we should write a song like that. So that's what
we did.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Recording it was so much fun Lee's voice, like his
vocal we did in like one take. The first his
verse is a one take. It was just so magical.
And then when we shot the video, we shot it
at a friend's bar called Blueprint in Nashville and.

Speaker 4 (10:54):
Also at my house.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
And Lee's one of the coolest dudes, and it was
really fun to get to work with him.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
You know, you mentioned bringing back some of those big hits.
Of course I remember realized, like it was yesterday, no doubt,
And how did the arrangement come together with Mitchell Tenpenny
to kind of put this together and bring this one back?

Speaker 1 (11:11):
Well, I was trying to figure out who the duet
partner would be for that, and I actually was thinking
of Mitchell, And before I asked him, he texted me
asking if I would sing on one of his songs
and I would responded I was like yes, and also
will you sing on my song Realize? And he said,
are you kidding me? Like I in high school, I
would just harmonize in my car to that song all

(11:32):
the time.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
I love it.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
So that was really cool that he wanted to sing
on that song and he knew it and his I
love his version, like his vocals, he just killed it all.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Right, you have a great voice, no doubt too. You've
been doing this a long time.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
We've mentioned that too, But also Hillary Scott from Lady
A for a long time and got a chance to
have just some amazing people there too. But I love
Try and I got a chance to hear that before
it comes out to all the listeners out there, and
one beautiful voice to another. Had to be a lot
of fun with Hillary Scott, right.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
Oh my god, yes, thank you for bringing that one up.
She is an angel, her voice is angelic. That was
something too. We've been friends for many years and I
texted her asking if she would sing on one of
my songs, and she said, yes, you know what, my
daughter and I we sing on Try all the time.
Is that one an option? And I was like, yes,
that's of course, and it is all yours. And she

(12:21):
came in so prepared and they know that song originally.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
Doesn't have harmonies, and she she's just beautiful in.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Every way, you know, beautiful too.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
Love Maren Morris, you mentioned her name at the beginning
of the show here too at the same time, and
just love arrangements on this one. It really kicks off
and sets the tone for the record. Here for a
Fallen for You, which is fantastic, and you know, Baron
brings that energy and that power behind her voice and
sometimes it's just really subtle and beautiful to listen to
and so delicate. Talk about this one for me.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
Yep, Maren is one of my favorite vocalists. She came
in so prepared that powerhouse vocal. Her tone is stunning.
And that was another one where I asked if she
would sing on a song, and she chose Fallen for
You because that was one that she listened to for years,
So that was really meaningful. And this is one of
This is my favorite version of this song already got.

Speaker 2 (13:11):
To take people back.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Of course, I'm sure you get asked this a lot too,
especially when you have a worldwide phenomenon song out there
like Bubbly. Where were you kind of like what went
through your mind? Was this one that you kind of
felt with specially you had something there and you know,
back in those days when you first got started, did
you ever imagine to have become that viral for a
beautiful song like that.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
I had no clue that Bubbly was gonna resonate with
people the way that it did, especially at that time,
I think music was way more up tempo and big
vocals and just not that style in my opinion. And
so the fact that people from MySpace heard the song
and chose the song and like gave me this career
that I've had. I really didn't expect it with Bubbly,

(13:53):
but it's one of my favorites.

Speaker 17 (13:54):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
I always love it. I love it too.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
You talk about the toes part of the song to you,
it starts there and works it's way up to At
the same time, wife loves that one, and of course
a lot of people have used that song for weddings
and birthday parties and just it's a really feel good
type of a song. Hey, You've had a lot of
pinch me moments in your career you mentioned for doing
this for a long time. Is there a couple two
or three that really stand out, whether it be collaborations, duets,

(14:19):
or just performing on stage, just pinch me moments.

Speaker 18 (14:22):
Yeah, you know.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
I've I got to tour with John Mayer, who I
was a huge fan of his music. I got to
tour with Cheryl Crow. Getting to do all these collaborations
with artists that I love, and I've been able to sing,
like at a soccer stadium in Mexico City with an
incredible artist Camilla, Like stuff like that where you're in

(14:42):
front of just so many people in a different world,
and all of those are definitely pinch me moments, like
people in a different country, like when they sing my
songs back to me.

Speaker 4 (14:53):
That's something special.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
Well, lookain the record is this time around. It's Colby Cala.
We got to play another one here on the backstage
pass again. Powered by the Sports Guys podcast dot com
and out there th HWN dot org, I Heart Radio
podcasts and a friends at KYBN ninety eight point one,
your Bay Area Broadcasting Network is featuring Maddie and Tate.
It's Kobe Callay and Live Without Here. It is on
the backstage pass.

Speaker 8 (15:14):
Stay checked, scared of death to watch ly.

Speaker 6 (15:31):
Felt like guess I didn't breathe, They don't wait. Can't
believe all the tears our cave.

Speaker 8 (15:44):
You were all evenudly, He said, I was a desert.

Speaker 5 (15:51):
That should be the rain, that should be the blood

it does. Combine the bullet that I thought he.

and also iHeartRadio podcast now one of the top search
podcasts out there in THWN dot org streaming in over
twenty seven countries world. Why would get to share this
album from Colby Calay here too this time around, which

(22:09):
is across all those DSPs out there, So let's talk
about it to another fantastic girl group, one of the
top out there, and Maddie and Tay and I love
this one just like I love the entire record live
without talk about.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
That one for us.

Speaker 4 (22:20):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (22:20):
I wrote this song about a relationship that I had,
you know, ended, and you know everyone's felt that with breakups,
where you feel like the world is falling apart and
everything reminds you of them and you don't know how
you're going to move on past them, and then finally
one day you do and it feels liberating.

Speaker 4 (22:38):
And so that's what I wrote that song with about
with Liz Rose.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
And my producers and Maddie and Tay are some of
my favorite artists and friends, and they just did such
a beautiful job on this song.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
You know, one of my good buddies out there too
collaborating with you on this record. We had him on
the Grand Ol Lopry when I ran the show on
there on WSM last fall there too, of course, and
Russell Dickerson's who I'm talking about to and it completes
the record with if You Love Me, Let Me Go.
And I've never known Russell to sing a bad song.
He's not about to start either too. So this is
another fantastic track that just really has that feel from
kind of roller coaster ride from start to finish. It

(23:14):
really talks about a relationship, didn it It sure does.

Speaker 1 (23:17):
Yeah, that's another one that talks about that push and
pull of a relationship that I think we've all experienced,
where you keep going back to that same relationship hoping
it'll change. Russell is a great friend. We've known each
other in Nashville for many years, and he was so
much fun to get to work on this record and
his voice is very powerful.

Speaker 4 (23:35):
Love him.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
So, Kobe Kellay never become a musician, what other career
path would she have taken?

Speaker 4 (23:41):
Uh, interior design or photography? That would have been fun.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
That's what I'm guessing. That's also any side hobbies out
there that fans may not know about.

Speaker 4 (23:50):
Those two things for sure, Absolutely, those are just things
I love.

Speaker 3 (23:54):
Yeah, Now, when you get a little downtime and kind
of music or you kind of like that traveler, Do
you like to go to city to city, country to
country and kind of see different things.

Speaker 4 (24:03):
No, But I've been starting to because I've realized most
of the travels I've.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
Been I've it's just been on tour and I'm in
each city, as you know, for a day, and you
don't get to really explore it. So the last year
I've been trying to do that a little bit. And
I went to Italy with my friends last year we
went to Switzerland. I went to Montana and New York
this summer and just trying to go and experience these
places solely without doing work when I'm there.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
You know, the cool thing is I've never been to
one of your shows. Well, now I take that back.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
I did see you perform at cmay Fest and it
was actually I can't remember if it was last year
or this year, but it was at the escend Amphitheater
and he were out there for either one of those
Winona Friends Jaco and and friends something or maybe last
year when it was Brett Young and Brett Young and
Friends maybe in c may Fest.

Speaker 2 (24:50):
And you kicked ass.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
And we'll say that out here on the podcast too
because we can say that and get away with it too.
But so cool, And it was really cool to like
interact with a bunch of fans like around me and say,
I remember that song, I remember when she did this,
did that. But how cool is it to kind of
see the fans just really you know, come out and
then like I said, by the merge, but really get
involved in your music so much and love it that
they sing the lyrics back to you.

Speaker 4 (25:11):
Oh, that's the most special.

Speaker 1 (25:12):
Part to be on stage and sing your song, and
especially at someone else's show, like at Brett's show or
at playing a festival. You don't ever know if people
are going to know all your words or know your songs.
And lately I've been really pleasantly surprised that, like even
dudes are singing along to my songs.

Speaker 4 (25:29):
It makes me very happy.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
Well, I mentioned you've done a lot of collaborations on
this record this time around, no doubt about it. But
I have to ask you if there's anybody that's either
alive still or could be dead. I guess was there
a dream collaboration that you've always wanted to do that
you still want to make happen.

Speaker 4 (25:44):
I would love to have a song with post Malone.
That would be really cool. And Chris Martin.

Speaker 3 (25:49):
Chris Martin and post Malone, I like that too. Already
got to get into the food categories. We kind of
wrap it up here too, but I'm no stranger to it.
We all love to eat, especially eating out, so there
seems to be more the thing. Give me the Colby
Cala eat out spots in Nashville or just anywhere in
the country.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
Where do you like to go?

Speaker 10 (26:06):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (26:06):
Nashville. We you know, Bartaco is a great spot. It's
in twelve South.

Speaker 1 (26:10):
It's like this beachy vibe they always have, like reggae music,
playing great Margarita's. It has an indoor outdoor setting, and yeah,
that's that's my go to place urban grub on twelve South. Also,
it's a good vibe all right.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
Now, as musicians, you got to take care of the
pipes and the instrument, no doubt about it. Some people
use water, some use whiskey, and of course some use honey.
What's the secret for you to take care of the vocals?

Speaker 4 (26:35):
All three of those?

Speaker 1 (26:36):
Actually, when I go on stage, I have a little
hot water and some Jamison whiskey and a little Grand
Marignier or honey.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
First instrument from a young age, when you got into music,
you learned to play. You remember kind of stepping on
stage four not just playing the instrument, but cover songs
to play.

Speaker 4 (26:57):
Well, I didn't play.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
I didn't know how to play these song, but I
sang killing me softly for a school talent show. And yeah, otherwise,
my first guitar or my first instrument was playing guitar.

Speaker 2 (27:13):
Playing guitar, I like that first chord you learn.

Speaker 21 (27:16):
G and C.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
That seems to be which is the easy ones to learn. Hey,
some people have come on and told me they're self
taught on her Brandy. We're like, we're self taught, or hey,
we use the YouTube video or you know, I put
my daughter, she's now turning six next year, Colby, and
she got into it too, and she goes, it hurts
my fingers, daddy. I'm like, well, you got to keep practicing,
and then she gives up the like good lately and
she goes to like straight piano now. So getting kids

(27:40):
involved in music is a key thing, right.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
It's key, and especially young although they don't really want
to pay attention to practicing and putting the time.

Speaker 4 (27:48):
I know I didn't. But the earlier you start, the
better you get.

Speaker 1 (27:51):
Tell her just to just stay a little bit longer
at guitar, because then she'll get the calluses on her
fingers and then it won't hurt anymore.

Speaker 3 (27:58):
I'll give her that advice for piano. Lesson's coming up
tomorrow night. All right, toppings on a Colby Calay pizza.

Speaker 2 (28:03):
What go on it?

Speaker 1 (28:04):
Well, last night we got a hot honey and pepperoni
and barata. But I'm honestly, I'm a pineapple girl.

Speaker 4 (28:13):
I know that's in ranch dressing. People might get really
upset about that, but dig it.

Speaker 2 (28:21):
I dig it too, no doubt. Well, love this record
so much.

Speaker 3 (28:23):
This time around is across all those DSPs out there
for digital streaming. Visit Colby Calay dot com. She's fantastic,
been doing it for a long time too. In one
of those powerhouse names in music there too. Love the blend,
love the crossovers, and I tell you you know you
were talking about this. Your album is a perfect example,
my friend, of how collaborations becoming more of the norm
in the industry. Because these are great duets. I encourage
