It's good man. At Texas and Tennessee heat middle of July,
it's crazy time you here.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Right, it's man. You know you spend especially leading up
to summer. You're like, Man, I can't wait for it
to warm up. But I have officially switched gears and
and I'm now I'm saying, man, I can't wait for
it the cool down.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
I was at delivery today and I was like, Man,
I'm gonna go outside and actually get the boxes. Yeah,
they just leave them at your front door. You got it,
responsible for pulling them in before the heat shower comes
into At the same time. We like that's it's quite
a work out there, doubt. Let's talk a little bit about,
of course, I'll start with then the restaurant Grindstone out
there too, doing some good stuff. The coffee company, but
you got us about to open another location. The one
in eaglesville's doing very well. Tell us about the business
(01:58):
and how the coffee shop's going.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
So yeah, Grindstone Cowboy is rocking and rolling. Man. We
opened about three years ago and it took off. It
turned into something we didn't expect, but we're definitely proud
of it. It took off so fast that we actually
are about to open another location down in Shelbyville, Tennessee.
It should open in the next few months, and then
we have one going down in Florida sometime late twenty
(02:24):
twenty six. So Grindstone Cowboy is doing really well and
we're having fun with it.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Should be too.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
A lot of good food out there, a lot of
good the drinks and beverages. Make sure you guys check
it out next time I'm in town. I'm coming by
there for a little beverage and of course a little
pastry something like that out there too. Hey, let's talk
about this new single for I played out there, Missing You,
which is another fantastic ballad for a country song. Has
everything you need, at least in my mind for a
country type of song, the writing, the actual story behind it.
It really tells a great story.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Yeah. I mean, I unfortunately I didn't write this song,
but I do know the guys that did write it.
You know, Jonathan's Singleton, Barry Dean and Dave Barnes. I mean,
they're just power, powerhouse songwriters. And as soon as I
heard it the very first time, I knew, I knew
that I wanted to record it, and I did. And
that was ten years ago. So fast forward, I became
(03:16):
an independent artist in twenty twenty and and have I
found myself with an opportunity to go to radio with
the song. And I've always believed that if you're gonna
go to radio with a song, you you got to
you gotta swing with you with your biggest hammer. And
I felt like I felt like Missing You was that song.
So I went in and I re recorded it. So
(03:38):
the version that's on the radio right now is the
second recording of this song, and I believe in it.
I think it's a smash hit. And uh, we're already
on like fifty fifty three stations, so it's it's looking good.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
I know it's smashed it out there too. We're gonna
play the smash it here on the backstage passes Craig Campbell.

Hey Beck, youre Creig Campbell here on the backstage past
Kaden Gordon Show get presented by that very brand out there,
the Kadangordonshow dot com. Today's best country mixing our friends
at BAB Construction Services also Caseybeck Music. I know you
also did one there too, loved it too. Came out
to really just recently, Whiskey Will colt Ford was involved
in this. Rick Lynn talking about this project, loved this song.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
So yeah, I've been I've known Rick Lynn for a while.
I've known Coke even longer. And when Rick reached out
to me, he said, man, I got this song called
Whiskey Will. Would you be a would you be down
to sing it with me? And I said yeah, And
He's like, and also, I think Colke's gonna sing with us,
And I said, well, that's just I sing on the
cake bro. I said, send me the song, and when
he sent it to me, I just I loved it.
(08:27):
It's got a great It's got a great vibe to it.
I think I think Rick singers, but off Coke did
what you know. Coke did what Coke does. And uh,
I think the song turned out great and I'm proud
to be a part of it.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
A lot of cool stuff on the last record there,
Class of eighty nine. Tell us all about it there
too last April when it came out, Killing Time and
of course the Blue Skye in Texas. Some of those
great country covers there too. You got to put your
kind of spin on some of those hits out there.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Yeah, I mean, the challenge was, you know, when I
always wanted to record an album that of songs that
I grew up listening to, and I wanted to I
wanted to stay true to the songs. I wanted to
keep those songs as close as possible as to what
they were when I fell in love with them, but
at the same time, I wanted to put my own
little spin on them. So yeah, you know, we did
(09:13):
Killing Time, which was the title track to a cassette,
my very first cassette that I ever bought with my
own money. Every song on the record is special for
its own reason, so Killing Times on there anymore. My
favorite Travis Tritt song, Blue Size in Texas, on the
other hand, which was the very first song my wife
(09:34):
ever heard of me sing, Be my Baby Tonight. I
was fifteen years old when I sang that song in
a singing contest and that was when I realized I
wanted to be on stage for the rest of my life.
And then there's two Code at Home, which is just
one of my favorite country songs of all time by
Mark Testa. So that record was a lot of fun
(09:55):
making for different some different reasons. You know, when you
go in and cut songs in the studio. You lots
of times you will use what we call studio musicians,
but I didn't want to do that. I I wanted
to make this record a little bit more personal. So
I hired the guys that I grew up playing these
(10:16):
songs with. And so the musicians on this record are
my buddies. We've played these songs thousands of times, and
it just it just made sense to use them in
the studio. And I think the record turned out great.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Really did too, And of course always great to pay
a tribute to those guys who paved the way for
us out there as great to artists, and of course
you guys growing up on just great music. And that's
what's so good to see Crag right now. Ninety's country
starting to make a little bit of a comeback there too,
and a lot of a comeback there too from a
guy named Zach Topp, and of course this guy named
Randall King who's keeping it real down there in Texas
Country and into Nashville too on Warner Records. Give me
some thoughts on nineties country and fans kind of clamoring
(10:50):
for that to come back.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Well, you know, you've always heard that country music is
what they call cyclical, so which means you know, it'll
start or to be in one spot and then it'll
go a certain way. In the eighties it was more
of a pop country, and then the nineties rolled around,
so it went a little more traditional, and then two
thousands rolled around and it kind of went a little
bit more pop, and then two thousand and nine twenty
(11:15):
ten we were introduced to broke country. And so now
I think it's I think that's where we are, and
now I think it's kind of circling back to a
more traditional sound. You got Jake Worthington, you got Randall King,
like you said, you got Zach Topp, Will Banister, you
got Will Jones. Shoot, what's what's the old boy's name?
(11:40):
I just was with him back in Vegas not long ago. Anyway,
there's a lot of great, great country singers out there
right now.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
I know one that came to mind he struck a
cord with me, was Dylan Carmichael. He's still keeping it.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Dylan was great. Drake Milligan, That's who I could.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
I couldn't.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
I was having a brain pard, But yeah, Drake so good. Uh,
And I'm proud of these guys many they're waving that,
they're waving that country flag, and it's it's it's awesome
to hear.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
It really is to speaking of that. On top of
that is, uh, this ladies class. I can't recall really
a strong ladies class since that nineties Country Eric growing
up with you know, Reba Martina and of course Faith
and Shania Twain all that. But this ladies class, led
by Landy wilson's doing pretty damn good.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Too, right, yeah, yeah, they're doing good, you know, female wise,
it's it's, uh, I'm I'm you know, I'm married to
an amazing singer, so my my, I'm very critical when
it comes to female singers, so that you know, the
bar is set pretty high even you know, just my
wife and my daughter. So Lady's awesome. I'm a big
(12:42):
Ashland Craft fan. Man. There's some great music. This new
Miranda Chris Stapleton song is pretty bad to the bone.
Miranda's been around a minute, but she's still she's still
on top of her game. So uh yeah, I mean,
we got we got some good, good female singers right now.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
The class is strong, no doubt too, So anyone else
is strong too, We're gonna go back and play one
of craigs the biggest hits right there too as well.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
I believe this went gold.
Speaker 2 (13:07):

The outskirts of Heaven, O says In the King James

built just for me.
Speaker 11 (15:13):
Now, I gladly traded for a farmhouse with the acreage

And back youre Craig Campbell on the Backstage Pass of course,
coming up here to planning for twenty twenty six, all
these CRS stuff for Country radio seminar coming up there,
more details in the next few months.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
Always working and planning toward that too.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
You know, we mentioned this song too, like I said,
one of your biggest hits out there too when it
went to country radio.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Went viral back then went gold Man.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
What a song and just what a true storytelling aspect
of it from how you began the song talking about
introduced to all these things and buck knives and you know,
fishing and you know, backwood stuff and things the Bible,
things like that, And I'm sure the song just never
gets old to sing, and it's it's exciting for you
that's still going strong today.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Yeah. You know, when I used to play piano for
Tracy Byrden, and I remember one piece of advice he
gave me was like, don't you know, make make sure
when you record music you plan on singing it for
the rest of your life, because that's what you'll end
up doing. And and Ouskirts of Heaven is a song
that I love singing every I love watching people sing along.
I love getting the messages, you know, and the the
(19:05):
the idea of where that song came from, it's all true.
You know. I thought about where I was going to
go when I when I took my last breath on
this in this world, and I knew that I was
going to heaven, but I didn't necessarily want to live
downtown Heaven. So I wrote I wrote out Skirts as
is basically just a prayer request of maybe when I
do finally get there, that I'll have this really cool
(19:26):
spread set up. So yeah, that's where that song came from.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
So, you know, we lost a lot of greats and
country music recently. I wanted to go just specifically one
there too.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
Well.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
A couple will come to mind, obviously, Charlie Daniels and
what he did for a lot of years out there,
playing a lot of live shows of course, the fiddle
and his band, you know, touring nationwide to leave his
mark on it too. That of course, I know it's
going to be missed already has missed ever since he passed.
And of course Joe Bonsell of the Oakrich Boys, I
know you probably crossed paths with these guys in your
career at some point, like to either doing shows with
them or just knowing the guys overall as a country
(19:56):
music family. Talk about just what Joe meant to the
Oakridge Boys and Charlie Daniel the impact team made on
country music.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
I mean Charlie Daniels, you know, obviously he is a
little bit before my time. And you know when Charlie
came around, was in the seventies, and uh, some people
considered his music was southern rock. And then even the
Oakrage Boys, a lot of people just would would consider
them more of a gospel, you know group kind of thing.
But I mean they just they made a mark on
(20:22):
country music that that will always, that will stand the
test of time. And you know, broke country people people
complain about when broke country was was pretty hot and
rapping in music, and I'm like, man, what are you
talking about? Said Charlie Daniels was doing that back in
the seventies, like Devilment down to Georgia. He was looking
for sola steel. He was in a buy and he
(20:42):
was way behind. I mean that's like, what do you
you know what I mean? So like Charlie was blazing
trails back then, didn't even know it. So I mean
they they are big deals, uh, and and left big
marks on country music. Hey.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Back to twenty twelve, Keep them Kisses Coming, we got
to die into this one too, and of course out
of my Head, Uh, two of those biggest songs out
there too. I was though, I guess were those. I'm
sure you actually wrote both of those, are at least one
of those. But I'm sure even if you've got pitched
those songs, those were just special country songs too that
live stand the test of time.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
Well. Uh, I hate to hate to bust it, but no,
I didn't. I didn't write either one of those. But
I've always been a fan of great songs, no matter
who wrote them. So out of my Head was written
by Cole Swindell uh and his back then it was
just a buddy of ours name is Michael Carter and
Brandon Kenny co wrote that song and then and then
keep them Kisses Coming was written by Dallas Davidson and
(21:36):
Ben Hayslip, you know, just big, big time songwriters, and
just both of those songs were songs that I knew
were hit songs, and I couldn't As soon as I
heard them, I was like, guys, I'm recording these just
at the end of story, no no questions asked. Let's
go ahead and listen, knock it out. So those were
the first two singles off of that second record, and
they did. They were. They were big hits for me.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
No doubt too.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
And another one that just out there was sentimental for
a lot of people loved it was that. I always
ask you about this because I love it so much.
It's that fish song out there too, because a lot
of people love to go in the backyard do some things,
or go to the backwoods, whatever it is.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
If you got a little pond back there too.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
I know my buddy's got some properties, so he considered
the pond in his backyard out there. But anywhere you
get near a river or lake stuff like that too.
But also too, man, just a relationship type song. It's
just a feel good type song. I love the fish song,
I really did.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Yeah, you know, and honestly, just a little backstory, that
song was never meant for the radio. When we wrote
that song, we didn't we had no intentions of it
ever being heard on the radio. We just knew that
it was a great live song, and honestly that's where
it went. We started, we started playing it live and
people were just like, where can I find this fish song?
Got to hear this fish? What's going on? And then
(22:47):
so we just decided, we said, hey, people are fired
up about the song, let's let's give it to them.
And that's how that's how that came about.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
Yeah, and you also had another one that resonated with
a lot of country fans out there. I know we
probably talked about this on passion as we've done, but uh,
I'm very much in that same category of being a
family man. Tell everybody about it because I know it's
one of those it's one of your high stream too.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
Yeah, you know, family Man was Family Man's will always
be a special song. It was a it was a
song I wrote when I found out I was going
to be a daddy for the first time. Then it
was it probably was the song that got me my
record deal. Uh, And it was also my very first
single of the country radio and you know, and I was,
I wasn't a dad obviously being a finding out I
(23:32):
was gonna be a first time dad. I was like, man,
this is kind of wild. I don't know, I don't
know what I'm doing. And uh so family Man was
written with the idea that maybe you know a blueprint,
if you will, of the guy that I wanted to
be for for my for my girls. So uh that's
that's where that song came from.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
A beautiful hit out there too. And I was, I
was with you too. The first time I got the
news that was gonna be a dad, I was like,
what do I do? I'm not sure, Like I said,
this parent thing, well, I guess you just kind of
figure it out. And now she's five years old going
to kindergarten. I'm like, yeah, we started late, but you
know what got her head on the tracks. It's our
only unit gooring out there. So now we're just kind
of saying to ourselves, it's pretty cool feeling being a
dad out there too and actually get a chance to
(24:13):
see this little thing you created just grow up.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
Yeah, no doubt. It's wild. It is, especially like now
when they start driving. That's that's the crazy thing.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Or dating right day. Crazy time is there too, no doubt.
And I got a few years left to but you know,
as you say, it does fly by, no doubt. So
she'll be driving one step in kindergarten and one step
graduating high school in the next few years or so.
Out there too. Well, make sure you guys get out there,
missing you across all the DSPs released out there too.
Once it is out there too, whiskey, will you can
(24:45):
check out across all the DSPs. Now, all right, let's
have all the fun, you know. I chance to try
a couple of new places when I was in town.
I went over to Germantown by the Sounds Ballpark and
tried three one two pizza or a deep dish. I
was like, you eat thin crust because, like I said
in watching kind of what I eat now much of
it and like I said, calorie and text stuff like that.
But love three one two pizza one of some of
the best deep dish ever had. And I went downtown
(25:06):
one night and a buddy mine we got to go
to the diner up Throw on the sixth floor, which
was pretty good food out there too, So I know
that a lot of different restaurants opening up. Nashville's never
a shortage when it comes to food out there. Anything
new besides your coffee shop. You're getting into food wise?
Speaker 3 (25:21):
Food wise?
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Yeah, oh man, I don't get downtown much. I've not
been to I've not been to three one two, but
I've heard I heard a lot of my buddies say
that the pizza was really good. I have been to
the to the sixth floor at the dinner. That's that's legit.
I stayed. I stayed close to Cool Springs in the
Franklin area a lot. Uh, there's a there's a new
(25:45):
a new Italian joint that just opened up in Cool
Springs called North Italia. It's really good. And then there's
also a really good steakhouse it's been up in a
little while called Perry's. Well it might it might be
a chop house. I don't know. It's just good. It's
just really good. And then here locally, like here in Eagleville,
(26:09):
we have like our place, Grindstone, but then we have
a super good Italian restaurant called Sirelli's and and Man
on Fridays and Saturdays. Do you wouldn't think it being
eagle will being as small as it is. But there's
a is a two hour wait to eat at Sorelli's
on the weekends and it's but the food is incredible.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Love it too.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Hey, a lot of great songs you put out out
there too, But is there one song or maybe a
either male or female artist or a band that you're
still saying?
Speaker 3 (26:36):
You know what?
Speaker 2 (26:36):
This is on my bucket list? I could see myself
collaborating with this band or this solo artist.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Who would it be?
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Oh man, it's the list is long. I love Obviously
there's people that I want to I would love to
record with, just because the chances are are getting slimmer
every day. But I got this one song that I
I've re recorded called You Probably Ain't that I feel
like would be a great collaboration with Alan Jackson, and
(27:06):
I've already reached out to him, and uh we'll see,
we'll fingers across that we can get. I can get
on the record with him or he can get on
the record with me, and uh so he's one of them.
Uh female wise, I mean, I've always been a big
Lee and Wolmack fan. I'd loved it. I'd love to
sing with her. I love I love singing with my
wife whenever we get a chance. My daughter's being being
(27:29):
able to, like not necessarily collab but just be on
stage with my daughters and singing harmony and play piano.
For those guys, that's they don't get no better than that.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
You know, when you see how many great artists are
doing their thing these days. We talked about the men
and the women category of all the great things that
are going on, how strong they are too. But man, uh,
for people getting into it, don't really understand the work
that goes into this too, when it comes to not
just a solo person doing it themselves, but trying to
build a good team behind that behind you so you
have whether it comes you know, from an A and
R side of it, record label, if it's independent or
(28:01):
the PR side, all these things have to come up.
Releases and sending stuff to radio. Talk about just some
of the those those particular challenges and maybe some advice
you'd give to some of the younger artists that are
getting into it now compared to maybe twenty years ago.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Well, there's pros and cons to it all. I feel like,
ultimately you need to be true to to who who
you are as a singer and as an artist, but
getting the notoriety that you're looking for. I mean, I
think record deals are aren't as aren't as important as
they used to be, especially with with social media. So
(28:34):
I tell people all the time, you know, when they
when I get asked, you know, what what should I
be doing, I'm like, Man, if you got any extra
extra cash lad around, I mean I would dump. I
would dump as much as you can into marketing, into
social media, into filming and editing, and and just creating
a great online presence. Uh. That seems to be the
way to go these days. So it's a lot different
(28:56):
than it was. I mean back back when Family Man
was on the radio. It's just you know, you you,
you sign a record deal, you put a song out,
you run it up the chart, and when it peaks,
you drop an album. And it's just that was just
the way it was, and it's just think that, just
think the way it is anymore.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
Yeah, but social media presence is big. You mentioned that
marketing side of it too. It's huge out there too
for a lot of those independent artists too. So if
you've never become a working musician and I know, you've
had your hands in a lot of different business endeavors
out there. What other career path would you have followed?
Maybe the young age, had you never recorded your first hit?
Speaker 1 (29:31):
Uh, you know, I had. My dad had had a
plan for me. He wanted He would have loved to
see me filing or flying a fighter, a jet, you know,
with the Air Force. I've always been intrigued by being
a pilot. Uh. Construction, you know, I love building stuff.
(29:53):
I love I love doing things and stepping back and
just saying wow, I did that. You know. So there
may may be construction. I don't know. So those are
a couple of things I probably would have ended up doing.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
I love it too.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
