Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, this is Megan Patrick and you're listening to the
Backstage Pass on the Home of the Grand Old Opry
on Am six fifty WSM.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
And welcome inside the Backstage Pass. Another Sunday morning, and
we're worshiping the Lord here on wsmradiowsmradio dot com and
of course the mobile app out there tune in iHeart
and the Sports Guys podcast dot com. We're everywhere out
there where you guys can find podcasts, and of course
again just debuting new albums and talking about the artists
and making the headlines there here on WSM Radio, the
(00:28):
Home of the Grand Old Opry. Brandon Morel here and
please to be joined by a good friend of mine
and a great friend of the show and a Buffalo
Bills fan. I always used that as the opening of
the show, the Great Megan Patrick here on WSM.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
My friend, how you doing fantastic? Just sipping out of
this winning cup right here. It was a it was
a tough night for Mitchell on Sunday. He's a big
Titans fan, So that's all good.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
You know, Hey, I want to get your forecast there
because I love leading with sports on the show, because
they've had like I said, some ups and downs, like
every football team has so far. My Cardinals aren't doing
too well out of the gate right now. We got
the big matchup coming up over the next few weeks
with you know, playing the remaining schedule. But how would
you forecast this early Buffalo Bill season?
Speaker 3 (01:15):
I mean, of course, I'm always I'm always hopeful. I
don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
I mean I think that for some reason, we've had
some slow starts this season at the beginning of the game,
and it's like, okay, can we just kind of come
out of the gate that way? But I mean I
do feel like a lot of our newer rookies and
like just new players are really stepping up.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
I mean, Amari Cooper has been crushing it.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Ray Davis has been having himself a game, you know, Coleman,
I feel like the pieces are starting to like.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Fall into place, and it seems promising. So we'll see that.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
I mean, they are still the Buffalo Bills, So you know,
there's always a part of me that expects them to
break my heart.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
You know what, there's a team that deserves it no
more to not break your heart. It is the Buffalo Bills.
And we always say, you know, Cowboys are America's team,
but you know what, Hey, when the Bills win it
one day, I feel like they're going to take over
that America's team, spot team, because there's a franchise overdue
for a championship. It's the Buffalo Bills, right.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
I couldn't agree more.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
I'd been so close over the last few years. And
of course those Marvel Leavy teams of the nineties. Hey,
let's build on this too busy tour season for you.
Of course you mentioned you hadn't been home a lot too,
for a lot of things going on out there too.
From this new album, which we're going to talk about today,
which came out October eleventh, as of a Golden Child
already just making a huge mark out there on its own.
But talk about that, just the summer, the blur that
(02:37):
that was, and now we're in the final quarter of
this year, and just how busy you're still staying out there.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Yeah, it's been a really amazing year for me. You know,
I prayed to be this busy for a long time,
and after you know, COVID and everything that happened there
and just trying to kind of get back on my feet.
This year has been better than I could have ever
asked for. I mean, the touring opportunities that we've had
(03:04):
have been amazing, you know.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
The Luke Bryan tour.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
I've still got some shows to play with John Party
in the next couple of weeks, and I'm going to
be making my way down to Texas with Flatline Calorie,
so getting to just play with some of my favorite
artists and people that I really look up to. And
then of course we took Golden Child to radio, so
I've been doing a lot of radio shows all across
(03:28):
the country. So yeah, we're saying really busy, but it's
it's been a truly incredible year.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Let's talk about the album before we play went off there.
We're gonna play a couple to day here on WSM,
but just a great chronological order of songs and a
great body of work, because you guys really could have handpicked,
I mean a lot of great songs, and you did
pick a lot of great hand songs. I'm sure there
were some that probably should have made an album but didn't,
but you got eighteen great songs. And if that's not
a full body of work, I don't know what is.
Tell me all about this project, and of course we'll
talk about the two we're gonna play here on the
(03:57):
show a little bit. But man, this really accentuates your
and yourself as an artist and just a true country
because there's something for everybody on there.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Absolutely well, I think, you know, for me, the last
few years were really tough and felt kind of rock
bottom for me, you know, losing my first record deal
and then COVID and not being able to you know,
tour very much, and then you know, trying to make
my debut in the US as a brand new artist
(04:24):
in you know, just a really oversaturated genre and market
that's still kind of recovering. And so, you know, I
I was in a pretty bad place a few years ago,
and I just kind of got to the point where
I decided, like, Okay, if I'm gonna dust myself off
and get back up and take another swing at this,
I'm going to do it on my own terms, and
(04:46):
I'm and I'm going to really write songs that I
want to write, and I'm going to make the record that.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
I want to make.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
I'm going to work with the people I want to
work with. And I made myself a promise when I
started this record that I wouldn't compromise on my vision.
So I really want it because I was so determined
to make the most authentic and honest and real record
I possibly could, you know, I felt like I wanted
(05:15):
to tell my story, my whole story, and kind of
just share, dig into everything that has kind of made
me the person that I am today. And and you know,
for me, I think the underlying theme a lot in
the record is just one of of healing and a
journey of finding myself and then learning how to love
(05:37):
myself unconditionally, you know, with or without that external validation.
Because you know, the title Golden Child, I mean that
that is that was me.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
It is me really still to this day.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
And you know, being a golden child, you know, you
you are praised so much for for your successes, and
so you crave that praise and you you know, on
the on the upside of it, you know, I became
very ambitious, very hard working, very focused. But the downside
of it is is this this feeling and this idea
(06:12):
that your value is tied entirely to your success. So
when you're not successful, you're not valuable, you're not worthy
of love. And you know that that also speaks to
my relationship or lack of relationship with my mother, because
that's that was very much what it was rooted in,
and it was it was very conditional on me being
(06:33):
that golden child, and when I was struggling and not
at my best, you know, I was very lonely during
those times because I was no longer serving this this role,
and so it felt like Golden Child was the perfect
title to make a record about my story. But you know,
(06:54):
as much as I'm digging into some some pretty, you know,
deep and heavy stuff on the record, I think that
you know, once you get through the full record, you'll
you'll feel that they're the underlying tone is really one
of empowerment and of triumph and kind of you know,
healing and pushing through those those traumas and those difficult
(07:17):
experiences and coming out on the other side as as
a more healed and at peace person with like where
I'm at. And you know, the song Golden Child actually
came I had decided to name the album Golden Child
before I ever wrote the song Golden Child, so that
and usually it's kind of the other way around. But yeah,
(07:41):
when we when we went in to write that song,
I had told them that I was naming the album
Golden Child, and they're like, well, we need to write
that song.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
That's such a great title.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
And you know, because the the record is is so
reflective and such so autobiographical, you know, I decided, I said, well,
what if we write it from the perspective of, you know,
me writing a letter to my younger self and sending
it back in time to just give her a little
bit of wisdom or encouragement. And so yeah, that's that
(08:13):
was what kind of triggered the whole concept behind that song.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
We're gonna play it right here too. It's a fantastic
song of the title track Golden Child, off the record
Golden Child. Across all those digital streaming platforms. It's Meghan Patrick.
It's WSM Radio, WSM radio dot com, the home of
the Grand ol Opry. Crank it up and enjoy. Here
it is.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
So I could send a letter back in time. It's
a younger men, wilder days, a day dreaming with ahead
and sky and always learning the hard way.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
I bet she thinks she knows better than me.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
That's just part of her charm. Now, you couldn't tell
her everything. Nothing stuburns her and her heart. But I
tell her, while you're reaching for a souls, just be
careful what you wish for, honey, never know my cone.
Speaker 6 (09:20):
True, don't be tempted by this.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
Ain't money, My costs morning you willing loose the.
Speaker 5 (09:30):

Speaker 7 (10:16):

Speaker 5 (10:17):
Ride down in the dust.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
But know that you get back up, gett know that
you moaning enough.
Speaker 7 (10:28):
Just be careful what your wish.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
Fall, Honey, You never know, Michael.
Speaker 6 (10:33):

Speaker 7 (10:37):

Speaker 4 (10:39):

Speaker 5 (11:18):

Speaker 4 (11:21):
The same thing that takes the edge off, he can
take the shine off at the wur.
Speaker 7 (11:28):
It's the way he diamonds on the inside.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
Because everything that glitters ain't goin child, everything that glitters
ain't goin chine. If I could send a letter back
in time to a young convenience her wilder days, I'd
(11:55):

gone b okey.

Hey y'all, this is Nashville recording artist Avery Anna, and
you're listening to the backstage past on the Home of
the Opry AM six fifty WSM.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
And Vacker on WSM the Home of the grand O
Lopry and Megan Patrick, a guest to this week Golden
Child across all those digital streaming platforms. Eighteen songs and
she's uh, I'm telling you, just kicking butt, taking some
names out there too with this one, love it and
love that title track, which you just heard right here
on the show. I'll tell you another one. I caught
my attention on there too. Of course they all do too,
But the boy who cried drunk I thought this was
(13:31):
an interesting story. Tell us all about this one.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Yeah, So you know, unfortunately I had to live that
song in order to write it. And you know, I'm
a survivor of domestic violence, and that is.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Something I really speak openly about. And you know, and.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Survivors of domestic violence are you know, who I really
advocate for. We're actually getting ready to put on our
second annual fundraiser this year, raising money for survivors of
domestic violence with the y w c A, which I'm
really excited about. But I think that, like you know,
I I of course I always want to be involved
(14:10):
in fundraising efforts because that you know, resources are entirely necessary,
especially for women who are you know, financially dependent on
their abusers. You know, the a lot of women stay
because they don't have the resources to leave. But I
think another thing that's really important when when advocating for
(14:31):
survivors is is just awareness of what abuse really looks
like and how it starts, and understanding that just because
he didn't punch you in the face, that you know,
the punching holes in the wall, and the and the drinking,
and the mental and the emotional and verbal abuse, you
know how how damaging that can be. And you know,
(14:53):
the concept of the song itself, it kind of made
me think of you know, because they say it takes
most women who are in an abusive situation on average
seven times to actually leave and stay gone. And there's
a lot of you know, conversation and kind of stigma
around people asking why women would stay with someone who
(15:13):
is abusing them.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
And it got me thinking.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
A little bit about that story of the boy who
Cried Wolf, you know, where he kind of continues to
play the victim when in reality he is tricking them
just for attention or because he can't help himself, you
know whatever, and he keeps, he keeps crying wolf in
the village, keeps running to save him, just to find
out that, you know, he was lying. And it just
(15:37):
kind of reminded me of what it was like for
me to be in that kind of relationship where you know,
they would be abusive and then they would just say, oh, well,
I was just drunk, I didn't really mean it, or
you know, it would be this this constant cycle of
them doing that and then me running back thinking I
(15:59):
need to save them every time. But what I wanted
these women to understand is that you can't and you
won't save them, and every time you go back, you
are giving them more and more pieces of yourself that
you may never get back.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
And it may cost you your life, you know.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
And so the way I wrote that song it was
it was kind of playing off of that that the
Boy who Cried Wolf, but I also wanted to leave
it on a note of empowerment and and for them
to understand, okay, like the the only way out is
just to leave. That's that's the only happy ending to
the story is if you leave. And so that's been
(16:35):
a big part of my story and it's a big
part of what's shaped me into the woman I am today,
and of course, you know, has defined a lot of
my fundraising efforts and what I you know, I want
to be able to use my platform to help as
many people as possible, and especially women. I love to
empower women through my music. And so, you know, be
(16:56):
putting that song out, even though we put it out
last year year, like almost a year ago now, I
just felt like it was a really important part of
the story and it needed to live on that record.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
You know, You've made a lot of great songs in there.
We talked about the previous album when You Come On
before and I loved it heartle My Glass, which I
thought was just a great song too, And you mentioned
putting out just a great body of work there too,
Riser House Records, How good has this been to you?
Because it seems like you've come up with some great songs.
I love that album so much. Also, Mama Prayed For
was on there too, and the title track extremely just
(17:29):
a very great body of work. Talk about that one
and just recap for the fans who may or may
not have heard that one in different markets that were
played into. They need to go listen to that because
a lot of great stories are on that too.
Speaker 4 (17:38):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Yeah, And you know, I appreciate you saying that, because
you know, that record came out during kind of like
a tough season for me, just career wise and just
with labels, and there was just a lot of changes
happening in my career and then you know, COVID and
all of that, and so in a lot of ways,
I felt like that project kind of slipped through the
cracks and never really got the attention it deserved. But
(18:03):
I will say, you know, I'm so incredibly grateful to
get to work with Riserhouse. They have been such an
incredible partner to me, especially in the process of you know,
releasing Golden Child, because you know when I got out
of my other record deal, you know, I kind of
sat down with Riser and said, like, listen, I just
(18:25):
got out of a deal with people that didn't understand
what I was trying to do. They weren't willing to
support me the way I needed to be supported. I
need to know that you are on board with me
making the music that I want to make and making
the record I want to make. Here's my plan, here's
my vision, here's my idea. Are you on board with this?
And the amount of freedom and trust and respect that
(18:47):
they've given me to make this record what I wanted
it to be. I mean, it's almost unheard of in
our industry, certainly not at a major label. I don't
know any other artists that are kind of being given
that trust, in that freedom, and so I just can't.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
I cannot speak highly.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
Enough of my label and my team, my management to
Randy over at make Weight, you know, she has just
believed in me. She's been one of my best friends
since I moved to Nashville almost eight years ago. And
it's incredible what it can do for your career when
you finally find a team of people that genuinely see
you for who you are.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
They love you for who you are.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
And they give you the freedom to do what you
want to do because, like you know, I'm thirty seven
years old, I've been doing this. I've been playing a
vand since I was thirteen, I have studied music.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
You know, I've been doing this a long time. I
know what I'm doing.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
I know as much or more than anyone else out
there making decisions about these artists careers, and it just
kind of got to a point where it's like, well,
at what point am I going.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
To just start trusting my own instincts.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
And that's exactly what I did on this record, which
I'm so proud of myself for. But I couldn't have
done it without the support of of my team and
my label, and I think that's part of the magic
of being with an indie label as well.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
No doubt we got to play one here. Of course,
we're gonna ask about a few more tracks off here
letting go of You Here it is from Megan Patrick
on w SM Radio, the home of the Grand Old Opry.
Crank this one up to enjoy this one too back
in the flash, Stay too.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
Same White Sheet. Stephen hotel So speaking through the curtains,

ol mouths down road till our reach the next milestone,
and I'm getting closer.
Speaker 5 (21:12):
But then I wish I knew had all all this
without letting go.
Speaker 4 (21:21):
He sugar making good money these days, but we ain't
making babies and trying to figure out how we're gonna
do both. It's driving both of us crazy. Windows giving
each other the grace turn into too much space, windows time.
Speaker 5 (21:45):
Run out, saving we got time.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
Yeah, I'm chasing my dream, but the man on my
dreams thursdays over, then it's heavy on our shoulders.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
Few more mounds down.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
Road home bach the milestone, but we're getting older than
my wish had a hold all all of this without
letting go.
Speaker 9 (22:19):
You you, Yeah, I'm chasing my dream, but the man
(22:51):
on my dreams three days older, running that same.
Speaker 7 (22:55):
Road coaster.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
Be all miles down to our reach the next mile stone,
and I'm kidding calls the demoition.
Speaker 5 (23:10):
Pat on all.
Speaker 7 (23:13):

A new album, Golden Child across all those digital streaming platforms.
Al Right, this one had a very good story to
tell you mentioned you went through kind of the at
double hockey Sticks and back, you know, putting this one together,
going through those real life experiences too. But letting go
of you never an easy message to tell.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
Someone, Well, I you know, I wrote that song, and
it's interesting because the title suggests that it's it's going
to be something negative, but it's actually really it's it's
a love song, you know, that I wrote for Mitchell
and about us. You know, we're both artists obviously, and
being on the road and kind of facing our individual
(25:01):
dreams doesn't always leave a lot of time.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
For us to be a couple.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
And you know, thankfully I've married someone that that totally
understands what I'm doing and the dream that I'm chasing,
and how much work it is and how hard it is,
and how you really have to take every single opportunity
that comes when you know, kind of make hay while
the sun shines, you know. And but it's really tough
(25:25):
because I'm always trying to find that balance of like, Okay, well,
how much time am I will with my husband?
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Am I willing to trade in to go do this?
Speaker 1 (25:34):
And you know, trying to balance making sure that I
am taking care not just to myself but doing what
I need to do to push my career forward, but
also to protect and nurture my marriage. And so you know,
the whole concept is just trying to this feeling very
conflicted about.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
Well, how am I going to hold on to all
this without letting go of you? So that's what Actually
when my favorites.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
On the record, I love it too, great sound, great story,
told her too, how much was this a lot of fun?
I'm sure it had to be a lot of fun
at Kaitlyn Smith. I love this lady. She is fantastic
and they're one of those great artists out there too.
Still in the Loan which features her, which is track
nine on the album.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
Yeah, So I mean this song is really special. I mean,
first and foremost because of Caitlyn Smith, because you know,
she is truly one of my favorite artists, songwriters, singers
like she has been on my bucket list of people
I've wanted to write with and collaborate with for a
long time, and so when I finally got in to
write with her, I was so excited and so we'd
(26:38):
Actually that day we wrote why Couldn't I Cry?
Speaker 3 (26:41):
First with Ross Kopperman and Ben.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Williams as well, and then Ross had to leave to
go to a dinner, and Caitlyn was flying out that
night and she said, well, I've got like an hour
before I have to go to the airport. Do you
and Ben want to just like do a power hour
and see if we can write something?
Speaker 3 (26:57):
And so I already had the idea, and you.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
Know, I kind of had a bit of like a
melody and a progression and just the general concept, and
I just kind of said, I was like, you know,
I'm in a place of healing and setting boundaries and
you know, self love and self care, and if there's
one thing that I've learned, you know, the only thing
worse than being lonely is being with someone who makes
you feel like like crap, you know, and who's like
(27:21):
killing your vibe. So it was just kind of like,
you know, if you're gonna be like that, I'd rather
just be stoned alone at home with my dogs. The
dogs can come, you're not invited. But it was, honestly,
it was such a fun time just.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
Writing that song.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
And you know, I really have always wanted to collaborate
with her, and so I finally worked up the courage
to ask her if she would sing on it and
be a feature on it, and she said yes.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
We had the most fun in the studio.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
It was absolutely insane just getting to like watch her
sing live and put her magic on it, and it
like really kind of blew up on tik talk and
every time we play it live people are loving it.
So it seems quickly to be quickly becoming a fan favorite.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
Hey, always appreciate you being a huge fan of what
we do here on everything, all the outlets. I always
love promoting the records when I get the press releases
on them too, and of course I'm listening to them
before I get the press releases. That tells you a
big of a fan I am of her. The next
wave of country music has you in it, and I
cannot wait to see what the future holds, especially at
the CMA Awards, and of course going onto the Spring
for next year. More success head of your way and
(28:31):
Glad You're happy, Glad Mitchell's happy, and just continue success
going forward. I appreciate you being with me.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Thank you so much. I appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (28:37):
