Of course, also B and B Construction Services, Barnemnium's custom homes,
commercial remodels, steel buildings based out of Sealy, Texas. They

(01:10):
will travel. It's done correct and with respect. Give Brent
a call out there for your next project. Seven one three,
eight nine zero twenty five fifty one. Also the morel
Law firm out there, specializing in eighteen wheeler and commercial
truck wrecks. They're in the top one percent of all lawyers,
having tried over fifty cases to verdict out there. Give
them a caller a text for a free consultation. Seven
one three four seven zero, four thousand and five. Also

(01:32):
thanks to our friends over at the Candan Gordon show
Casey Beck and Chandler Marie Music and I tell you
what's speaking of the music, he's got one out there
right now. We had to talk about here on the
show because that's what we do. It's called you picked
the flowers. We're picking him to be here. That leadoff
for us here on the backstage. Good friend Robbie Johnson,
what's up man, Hey.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Bren, how's it going. I'm doing great? What about you?
You know?

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Another day in paradise, right, that's what they say. I
guess anything above ground is better than the other thing, right, Yeah, yes, exactly, exactly,
stay busy with all the shows. Hey, let's jump right
into it. Twenty twenty five a whirlwind for everybody. But
of course the Robbie Johnson Camp to give us an
update obviously, the singles out as of this month, the

(02:14):
first of this month for August, and tell us kind
of what we can expect moving forward and building for
more projects.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
All right, So I've been working on artwork for I
Have I'll Have a Christmas EP two songs, but I'm
working on a full length album right now and got
a master yesterday. It's sounding killer and I can't wait
to put everything together, you know, decide the orror of

(02:44):
the songs and all that. But I was working tweaking
the artwork this morning, so that's done. So it's just
a question of, yeah, deciding what order we're gonna put
the songs and just you know, throwing that to the
my distributor and uh yeah, and plan everything ahead.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
What's kind of the hardest part. You always talked about
this before the show, talking about, you know, either working
for yourself as an independent artist or if you have
a small label behind you looking at those steps and
trying to like check off all the boxes daily to
put stuff out here too. What do you find is
the most challenging part of being in this business.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Well, it's a challenge, but also at the same time,
it's a lot. I mean, I love to learn. So
you know, this morning I learned to do new stuff
and so many new apps out there that give you
the tools where you can, you know, modify pictures very easily.
You don't have to be Adobe, you know, go on
Photoshop and and do all that. It's it's way easier

(03:43):
and way more affordable than if you hire a company
to do it. Uh so and it's and it's exactly
how you want it to be and uh and if
it doesn't look good, it's all on you. So but
but it's a lot of fun, you know, you learn
new stuff, and it's it's a lot of work. You know,
people they're like, it's not a nine to five, you know,

(04:07):
it's being an artist. It's twenty four to seven. There's
always something to do, something to think about, something to tweak,
you know, you know, just you know, releasing an album,
then I have to take all the music, all the metadata,
throw that in the you know, on the website, on
the platform for the distributor to be able to send

(04:29):
it to the digital you know, the DSPs and all that.
So it's a lot of work and you got to
do pr you got to go to events, you got
there's always something happening and that you need to be doing.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yeah, that national scene right now saying both the ladies
and guys out there to killing it.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Man.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
The category of country music has been as healthy as
I can remember ever since nineties country because every time
you pick up the phone or a lot of something
out there on social media, pretty saturated with some good talent,
Rightn't that right?

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Oh yeah, totally. It's I mean it's a great time
for music, great time for country music. And you know
it's what's s nicis that it's it's really broad. It's
not narrow. It's not one sound. It's many different sounds.
And that's what's cool about it. And you and you know,
I mean there's never been a I don't I mean,

(05:20):
there's always been, you know, in country music, a history
of music being a little you know, outside the box
and people complaining about it. But I mean, I mean
it's a good era because you have it's funny. You
can listen to country music and sometimes you get it
brings you back to the fifties. Sometimes it brings you

(05:41):
back to the sixties sometimes and it's but it's with
thresh lyrics and words and way to say things that
are really modern and not dated. So it's really cool.
I mean it's it's a great era for music and
country music.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
It's a great era. And it's songs like this to
keep us moving here on the backstage past. And I
love the title of this one, his latest single. Robbie
Johnson across all the DSPs out there to check out
the website Robbie Hifan Johnson dot Com out there too
as well, Robbie with a Y. You picked the flowers
out there here on the backstage past, and when we
come back, you tell us what you chose here too. Again.

Org and back here the Sports Guys Podcast dot com.
A grand slam of music and sports out there. New
line of merchandise coming up just shortly after Labor Day.
We'll talk about that in new email blast we're going
to have out there too for all the good stuff
happening here on the Backstage Pass, and of course a
new website coming soon. Man, it's just it's all looking
good out there, just like an artist releasing great music.

(12:55):
All right, you picked the flowers? How did this one
originate from? And love this title? A cool title for
a song, right yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
Mean it's it's you know, it's that kuntry boy way
of not you know, asking directly do you want to
marry me? He just you know, throws a curve and
it goes the other way around to get to the point.
But yeah, I mean it's a great song. And what's
crazy about this one is that I never I never
did that. I never you know, dropped on my knee

(13:25):
with a diamond ring and all that and do the
big proposal. Yet I'm married, I have two wonderful kids.
So I guess this song is a way for me
to rewrite my life story because I wish it would
have been done that way, you know, the proper way.
And yeah, so I mean, for me, it was totally different.
And when I sat down and started writing the song,

(13:48):
I just slip the words come out, and I'm like, oh, okay,
it's about Okay, that's that's what it's about. You know.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
It's about a guy.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
Who's been with this girl for a very long time.
They're in and out out of a relationship, bouncing back
and forth, and they're really great friends, and he wants more.
He wants to know if it, if it, you know,
could go further. So he just you know, pops out
the ring and ask, you know, hey, let's do this.
Come on, I'll pick the cake, you pick the flowers.

(14:19):
Let's do this. And uh. And so I was like, hey,
it's it's not my story, but I guess it's what
I wish, you know, Because what's great about music is
you know, you can go through story. You know those
story songs. And with country music, of course, we have
all those great songs about you know, story songs, and

(14:40):
and oftentimes it's not things you've been through. You will
listen to the song and you will love the song
because it brings you somewhere else and it gives you
emotions and all that, and you're living through the music.
So that's what's great about, you know, about the music.
And and I guess that's what I did for this one.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
It's a great song touches in a lot of different
areas out there too. And you mentioned relationship. That's the
country music drinking songs relationships, And like I said, it's
you know, trucks. They're all country songs where they have
those different ingredients in there too. Hey, let's go back
to a couple of years ago, maybe three years ago
to be exact. January twenty twenty two, this record seven
Songs Alive Right Now came out hit all the DSPs,

(15:25):
A couple of cool songs off of their two I
loved it, just I like to recollect a little bit
and previous work and you know, the catalog of songs
you guys put out there as to what makes the
record and how proud you were of to exhibit these
songs to people drinking beer obviously beer songs. Another one
in that category. Two, I liked If I Ever Was
a Cowboy? Talk about this one hit on some of
the highlights of that record, Oh If.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
I Ever Was a Cowboy. I mean, I was amazed
by the reaction of people, you know, and it was great.
You know, Spotify picked it and put it on their
traditional country playlist, huge playlist Spotify, and it's it's approaching
the million streams and it's it's doing great. It was like,
it's it's an honor, you know, to go and check

(16:09):
the playlist and see everybody that's on the playlist. You
got Rad Paisley, Cody Johnson, Justin Moore, George Straight. I mean,
it's it's amazing to see your name, you know, amongst
those those giants. So it's it's really cool, and it did,
it did really great. And love the fiddle in there,
Janey Fleeener, She's she's the best. I mean, she's so

(16:32):
fun to work with, and she came up with those
incredible fiddle parts and which makes the songs really the
song really memorable and very hooky. You can't take it
out of your your head. And yeah, I mean really
proud of that one alive right now to that song.
I really love it. Trying to get over You. We

(16:53):
did a music video my daughter's in it, m hm,
and shot that in Florida and it played on rotation
on CFT, So that was really cool. Uh yeah, I
mean that was that was a fun project and really
proud of that one.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
I love that too. I also loved the one you
put out. There was just a lot of fun out
there too. Looking back at it too. Was on that
particular record It All Starts Tonight, that was the one
that ended that record. Yeah, talk about this one for
the audience. Yeah, this one.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
I mean I was just like I said, I just
sit down and I just I just let the words
out and it just it just I had a blast
doing that one. Really loved it. I was I did
like a little demo and I was like, oh my god,
And it's crazy because it's your babies, and you know,
the brain plays tricks on you and and I was like,

(17:45):
oh my god, this is such a it's an amazing song.
It's the greatest song. It's always the greatest song ever.

Speaker 5 (17:51):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (17:51):
And then you record it and it becomes something else
and it evolves and it's it's such a fun process.
And I really liked that one, you know, the energy
of it, the pace as well, the bridge and everything. Message. Yeah,
that was a fun one.

Speaker 2 (18:09):
Another one too, in that skinny category of songs out there.
It was a lot of fun this year too. And
I think we talked about this if you were around
hanging out there crs C eight week, we're there tg
IF and I tell you, I can always love it too,
because words they can go number of different directions. But yeah,
you take it for what it's worth on the meaning
of it. But I know for me it means a lot,

(18:29):
no doubt.

Speaker 1 (18:31):
Yeah, thank god, it's Friday. It's so funny. T G
I F and man, that's you know. I was writing
the song and like, oh wow, it's great. This is
a great love song. And it's like, wait a minute,
it's a love song, but it's it's not exactly what
I think it is. And that one I was doing
on the piano. You know, doing a chor progression on

(18:52):
the piano and then I get to the chorus and like,
oh my god, it's about beer or whatever you drink
on Friday every night. But I thought it was it
was fun, you know, to have those double entouenders and
and you know those there's I really loved the bridge.
What what's mentioned in the bridge?

Speaker 4 (19:12):
You know, we'll go to we'll go to heaven, you know,
with a little help from you from but I mean
people who understand it, you know, and.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
It's it was a cool one to write, and I
was happy, and you know, I released it on on
Valentine's Day, close to Valentine's Day, like, oh it's a
love song, let's release it from Valentine's Day. And it
all starts and yeah, it all starts like oh my god,
she's blonde, you know, and all that, but eventually it's

(19:48):
the beer that is blonde. But yeah, that was a
that was a fun one to to write. And like see,
like I said earlier, when you you know, you see
watch it evolved into something concrete, you know, from just
playing chords on a piano where now you have a
full band playing that song and then you cut your
vocals to that and then weak everything and get background vocals.

(20:11):
I mean it's it's it's such a fun process.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
It gets when you get step into it right and
come up with ideas for songs. He's right, anything can happen.
We gotta put that on a T shirt, say, Robbie
Johnson said there too in the back of the T
shirt and that phrase out there too rude out. Time
for some more music, Robbie hyphen Johnson dot com for
all the tour dates merchandise out there. Make sure you
guys check it out. Always love titles of songs we

(20:35):
mentioned you picked the flowers. How about this one at

like that. But I mean, I got the jester your
song if they could talk, I now know what they
would say, right, yeah.

Speaker 1 (27:19):
I mean, if if Barstools could Cry, you know, and
it's this poor guy sitting out of the barstool. You know,
he just he has too much of that cowboy pride
and he's you know, he's desperately relying. And that's what's
crazy because the song, if you if you read the
title of Barstools Could Cry, you're like, oh, it's a

(27:39):
tear jerker, it's a ballad. You know, it's sad and
all that. It is sad, but there's hope in the song.
But that poor guy sitting on the barstool is so
hopeful that you know, he could fix all his problems.
You know, he had an amazing relationship with someone in
the past and he just blew it. You know, he's

(28:01):
too young, too dumb, He's like taking it for granted.
You know, it's always going to be around the corner.
I always can go back to that relationship. But no,
that person left. Now it's Ober, and years later he realizes,
oh my god, that was the love of my life.
She was my soulmate. I screwed up. And but like
I said, he has too much fright. So he's just

(28:22):
hopeful that you know, if barstools cry, first of all,
I would have known that when she left that last time,
it was the last time. And and he's just hoping,
you know what, you know, if barstools cry then, and
these boots of mine, you know they'd be dry because
now he's drinking. So you know, it's it's it's it's

(28:42):
a funny way to to give it another another meaning.
And uh yeah, that was that was a fun one
to write, you know, just to write it from the
perspective of the barstools, you know, where they witnessed so
many things. Fights, love stories, cheating story, name it everything.

(29:04):
They've heard it all and seen it all.

Speaker 2 (29:06):
So yeah, and hey, we've used them there on those
nights we're drinking too as well, out with friends and
want to go out and have a good time too.
But back in the day, those college days, those barstools
say if they love the.

Speaker 1 (29:17):
Title, Oh, yeah, they could talk, you know, I love it.

Speaker 6 (29:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (29:21):
They planning a lot of good memories in my head too,
no doubt about it, to get all the songs available
for the streaming out there to it concluding the one
if Barstools Could Cry.

Speaker 6 (29:29):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (29:29):
You know, we all talk about this, take different paths
in life to get to where we want to go.
I've done that with this very radio show. You've done
that as an artist. You've worked a number of jobs
to kind of scratch and claw and dig to not
only just get to Tennessee, but stay in music city
out there. Road I'm On is where I'm going with this.
It told it very well. This story was beautifully told.
Talk about this one.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
Yeah, Road I'm On is very very personal. Ah, you know,
it's it's really it's it's my story. You know, my
dad left I had a very young age, and it
just left a big hole inside of me. And since then,
you know, questioning myself and trying to understand the world,
why so much pain, why so much sadness? Why you know,

(30:12):
why is this happening you know in the world, and
carry that and it translates into my music, and yeah,
I mean, that's that's great. It was, you know, it's
it's always fun when you're able to write something like
that and like I you know, I just I just

(30:34):
let it out and it just comes out like that,
and it's great.

Speaker 5 (30:38):
You know.

Speaker 1 (30:39):
Sometimes you know, not every song you were talking about
earlier that you know, it's how do you choose what's
on the record what's not on the record. Of course,
this way of writing, you write, you know, a bunch
of songs and many are just you know, okay songs,
and some are really bad songs, you know, because when
you try to manufacture something, yeah, it doesn't work. You

(31:03):
just got to let it out. You just don't fight it,
let it be what it wants to be. And for
that song, it was the case. You know, I wasn't
trying to make it more dramatic or less dramatic, or
you know, make it like, oh, this is sad. Let's
not make this sad. Let's make it more happy. Well, no,
it's not. It's not happy. It doesn't want to be
a happy song. So I just I just let it

(31:25):
out and don't fight it and don't try to manufacture something.
And and so I'm I'm always proud of you know
what I release and this one I'm really proud of. Yeah, people,
if people want to know who's Who's Robbie Johnson, they
could start by listening to that song.

Speaker 2 (31:44):
Which Well said, right therapy, that's the path we're all
on to get to where we want to go to.
We mentioned how healthy it was being a male and
female artist and how much competition there is right now too.
That's just out there, both of that female category and
male category in country music. I'm going to ask you
about your song right process. Take me through this a
little bit from the standpoint of you get the title,

(32:05):
the hook or something that comes to mind, and you're
like me, sometimes at night when you can't cut your
mind off at ten o'clock or midnight or something like that,
I got to get up put that on my phone.
What's yeah Hockey Johnson School of one on one on songwriting.
Take me through that.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
Yeah, Yeah, I mean it depends that. Sometimes it does happen.
You wake up at two am and you go to
the toilet and then you grab your phone and then
you're recording something, but you don't want to wake up.
You know people in the house, so you hungry. You know,
and that's what happened with my song up all Night.
And it's funny because I have a recording, it's like

(32:39):
I'm trying to sing it but not singing too loud
and uh. And then the next day you just sit
down it's like, oh, what is this song about? And
you know, and you just you just let it out
and sometimes you you know, you will. For me oftentimes,
I just I just It's a technique that a lot

(32:59):
of people use where they just write stuff down. I
know that Bob Dylan does that, where he would write
thoughts and everything and he wouldn't, you know, argue with himself.
He would just write him down and then try to
make something out of it and take pieces and put
them together and construct something what he's trying to say

(33:23):
without consciously thinking about it. And that's pretty much what
I do so oftentimes. And also music feels it feels
like it already exists and it's meant to be and
you just find it, you know. And sometimes you're writing
a song and you have a title. For example, my

(33:45):
song get or Done, the original title was twenty one
and I was writing a song and everything that was
the main idea of the song twenty one, and I
was like, nah, that's not the title. That song doesn't
it doesn't want to be that. It doesn't want to
be about it's about twenty one, but it's not twenty one.
It's not. And then I'm like, what is it? What

(34:06):
is it? And then I'm like get her Done? Like, oh,
there it is, and then everything locks in, you know,
the versus what you're saying is like, oh my god,
that's it. It's get her done, you know, just do
it before it's too late. And so that was cool,
and I was like, it was like, oh my god,
it's are you sure you want to use get her done?
I mean, but then hey, it's what the song is

(34:29):
asking for. That that's the song. So a lot of times,
you know, if Barstools Could Cry, it was the title
was slightly different, and it's until I just like, what
is it was like, oh, if Barstools can cry, you know,
it's like, Oh, that's it. That's that's the title.

Speaker 2 (34:46):
That's the hook.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
It's it's pretty oftentimes I'm going to have an idea
for a hook like oh, this could be a nice hook,
and I write the song and don't use that hook.
Change the title changes I don't know how many times.

Speaker 12 (35:02):
You know.

Speaker 1 (35:02):
Oftentimes I will, you know, write a song, then I
sit down with my buddy, producer, co writer Danny Raider,
and then I sing the song and all that and
we map it out and he's so amazing. And afterwards,
you know, we lay down a few tracks and then
I go back home with that and I listen back,

(35:25):
and oftentimes I will change the song depending on what
came out of the session. And yeah, and so the
reason I'm saying that is because sometimes I'm talking about
songs like what song, Oh, I'm sorry, I changed the title.
It's this song now, okay, okay, Robbie. And so there's

(35:48):
a bunch of of those songs where in his system
he has a different title and write until the end
when I sing the lead vocal, then the title changes.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
It's never changing process. Yes, I would like to say,
it's not gonna be molasses where you get stuck. It's
gonna get there and change a few times before it
gets to the mix and mastering process. There too, title
could change courus you mentioned hook.

Speaker 1 (36:13):
Oh, yeah, sometimes you know, you have the words, Sometimes
you have the words, you have the lyrics, and you
go in the studio and you sing, and sometimes some
words don't flow that they're harder to sing, so sometimes
you tweak it to make it better. And oftentimes it's like, oh,
that's what it needed. I mean, I don't know why

(36:35):
I came up with what I had before, because that's
exactly what was supposed to be there. So, like I
said earlier, it's as if it's meant to be. It
already existed and you just found it, got.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
It, no doubt. All right, we'll finish up with these
two a couple of fun wins. You may have mentioned
this to CRSCU eight week and that kind of thing,
But I got to get the Robbie Johnson's favorite pro
and college teams out there, sayce, I do bring upwards
here on the show. We get to talk about that
with the guests.

Speaker 1 (37:02):
We have to.

Speaker 2 (37:04):
I guess you get to follow it much. And if so,
we're in the family. Who are the college and pro
teams you root for?

Speaker 1 (37:11):
I would say, I mean, of course the volunteers. You know,
it's right here Tennessee, of course, and I've been. I've
been to the man it's a huge stadium. It's so impressive.
It is so impressive when you look at the size
of the college, you know, stadiums compared to the NFL.
Now you got NFL. Then you look at the college,

(37:32):
it's it's so huge, the attendants and everything, and it's
so popular. So I would say, yeah, I'm pretty much Tennessee.

Speaker 2 (37:41):
I like good stuff there all right. When you're out
there on the road, and you got to, like I said,
get something to eat, Like I said, you do you
yelp something? Do you ask the locals? And how do
you take care of the pipes? How do you take
care of the instrument that makes the money?

Speaker 1 (37:54):
I mean, I take care of You got to sing regularly,
you know, to you stop singing for a long time,
then when you start back, man, your your bounds will
lose your voice instantly. Uh. And it's it's it's very
it's not fragile. You just gotta work it. It's like muscles,
you know, you gotta keep training them every day, every

(38:17):
other day. But you know, when I'm out on the road, yeah,
I mean that's that's that's what you gotta do. You
gotta keep on singing, keep doing it.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
No doubt too. Like you said too, I've been back
in that gym working those muscles. So it's it's a
it's a muscle, no doubt, and uh, any layoff is
not good. And for me it's been every other day
because I tell you, man, when you get in there,
you're like, why am I doing this? Why does this
hurt so much? Well, it's all working out for reasoning
same time. That's why it's it's so good out there.
And you're gonna be good at something, you might as

(38:52):
well get out there and and go forward full throttle,
no doubt. Pick the flowers across all the DSPs out
