Speaker 1 (00:00):
Backstage Pass presents the Right Flow Rocket Report, Cleaning House
and cleaning up the competition heard right here on the
Backstage Pass. And now here's Brandon Morell.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
And welcome inside the Backstage Pass. You're home for Houston
Rockets all season long. Here powered by the Sports Guys
podcast dot com. The Rockets pick up their first win
of the young season now one and two, defeating the
Brooklyn Nets one thirty seven to one oh nine at
Toyota Center and of course, looking back at it, five
of the next six will be on the road now
for the Houston Rockets, with trips to Toronto, Boston before

(00:34):
the next home game coming up Monday, November third, against
the Dallas Mavericks. The Rockets were led by tarre Easton
with twenty two points, nineteen points from Kevin Durant. Jabari
Smith had eleven twenty one points from alprimsing Gun and
twelve from a Men Thompson. After the game here presented
by our friends at Right Flow Pressure Washing lawn Care,
we caught up with head coach imy Udoka. He talked
about the Rockets coming together for the first win of

(00:55):
the season toodnight, how much of.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
That product of playing a little bit now sue.

Speaker 4 (01:01):
Faster and the they you picated with, Uh, Detroit did
the other night, and we saw that and try to
work on it and improvement. We did tonight strong in
the pocket and I think only had uh two two
or three turn hours and a half. Uh, So we
took care of it out. We made great decisions and
got our spacing a little bit better.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
So very similar. We capitalized on that.

Speaker 5 (01:22):
Tonight and that started to maybe a little run there
at them in the second half, cut it to nine.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
What did you tell your guys.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
In the world room, Uh, that we are scoring a
well enough. Obviously there was seventy one, and to give
up sixty it's not to our standard defensively, especially when
we you know, build a twenty point lead.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
It was just some sloppiness there and in the fouls.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
Had kind of had it up and so we weren't
happy at half time to be only up, you know,
by eleven. And then great third quarter response to thirty
two to seventeen. We gave up twelve threes and the
half and only three.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
In the second half. So we locked in on the
shooters and uh didn't foul as much.

Speaker 5 (01:56):
What is the different you've seen in the pace and
we started Josh Ju night instead of seeing Yeah, I think.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
It's a you know, something to do with size for sure,
but it's also getting stops.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
You know, guarding 'em a little bit better than we
did in the first two games.

Speaker 4 (02:09):
Uh until the end there. I mean we piled him
up under an hundred for the most part. And uh,
we've always been good in formula. First, Like I said, defense, offense,
get down and running and then you know, got multiple guys.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Question.

Speaker 4 (02:20):
So could be a product of the size, but I
think our defense was a point, especially in that.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Second court, our third quarter. Yeah, what would you light
about Reid's second half in particular? Yeah, he stayed aggressive.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
You know, he's he's a guy that we want to
hunt certain shots and make the plays. So it's it's
a little bit of both. And I as well as
I'm in. We got I need those guys to score
and pick a roll, score off the ball and and
be threats off of I'll be I'm in and and
and Kevin and so he filmed the spots.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Was aggressive there and then made some really good reads
out of pick a role. So continue to build on that.
Stay aggressive, But like they always say, and and be confident.

Speaker 6 (02:54):
What about far to night he did get some both
day into the court.

Speaker 4 (02:57):
Yeah, it's a it's a great night when he does
those things. And so you know he's epitome of turn
the defense offense and you know, comes up with loose walls,
but also can be recive being off those guys shouting
extremely well.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Was confident there and like I said, our spacing in
general was much better.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
And like I said, when the team loads up the
paint or is in the hard edge, you know, we
just get to the.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Big inside and he'll find the right right guys outside
and out. He did to be job. Guy's already shooting.

Speaker 6 (03:22):
What are those type of shots you want read to
be hunting? And how can the teams help kind of
fuel that for him?

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Yeah, what I just.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
Said, like the spacing and you know hit the threat
he is off the ball, teams are gonna blitz outbrand
of the post.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
He was gonna blitz KD in the pick and roll.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
And our man gets downhill so well that you just
gotta get to the right spots and be an outlet.
And so he did that in the pick and roll
as well, being patient, send these guys are them letting
the screens come and he can walk into some of
those threes as well. So if they need him to
continue to grow in that area on and off ball,
to be that threat and be a secondary.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
About him, but out out there a lot of times.
Of course KD.

Speaker 4 (03:55):
It's good to have Kad knowing that he can score
thirty points at any time, But what are the same
about your team that he You know, he had effish
at nineteen points, only nineteen points to night, but you're
still able to score up one hundred and thirty. Yeah,
it's a you know, the crowd didn't attention to these
draws on the night the basis we're don't have to
drill that all season to be ready for that. But
like you said, we didn't take advantage against Detroit when

(04:15):
they blitzed him every time, and we did much better
job tonight.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
So they he's gonna, he's gonna We're gonna be in
that situation a lot.

Speaker 4 (04:21):
And he very willing passer, has a size to pass
over the double teams and it's up to the other
guys who played four and three behind and so uh,
he'll take that. You know, he'll play the fourth quarter
and so it's good to get him the rest, but
you know he's about to win anyway, and uh if
he has to be a decoy at times to do that.
The way that you all played tonight, is that just
a product of the way that you all practiced after

(04:43):
the Destort game.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
Like I said, there were some similarities in Toronto would
do the same thing with how they defend aggressive on
the ball and the bigger rolls and uh, crowd in
the paint.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
So you gotta be strong with get in there and
not turn it over.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
And like I said, the team should really fear out
bring in the pocket being a playmaker, and.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
So he's to have to make a pay with that,
and we did tonight.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Is it a point emphasis not just for Alpie but
for everybody when they bring the ball up to try
and find that that week's side porn to three shooter.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Yeah, I think for we want to get more up.
We were low in the league.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
Last year, and like I said, if if we're being
doubled that much, the swing swing should be there to
get to the corner three. And so even tonight we
were just a little bit slow reversing it out of
the double team but for the most part, we're going
to hunt those in transition and out it in the pocket.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
The little man has to come across and help, and
he's probably been finding that.

Speaker 6 (05:29):
Coach out for an easier for you to have Van
Lead sitting next to your coaches, and for him too.
After every play, after every time out he goes to
the players and what he sees being on the sideline.
How impouring easier for you to have him even with
the coaching.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
Yeah, I said earlier today that he's an extension of us.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
You know, whether he's playing or not, and he pulls
guys aside and.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
Tell them what he sees and did the same thing
when he was playing, but now in a different role.
And so he's constantly talking to the young guys.

Speaker 6 (06:05):
As I noticed that.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
They all wear white and black night.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
And of course we also caught it with star Kevin Durant,
who set out most of the fourth quarter rockets shot
fifty eight percent from the field. He talked about when
the rockets are clicking on all cylinders, they're tough to defeat.

Speaker 7 (06:35):
Couldn't play faster like this be a recipe for success
for crockets regardless of the starting line.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Of going for plant faster.

Speaker 8 (06:43):
Yes, it's a balance I feel I feel like we
can definitely push the pace a bit more, but also
know that sometimes you push the pace and create you
you you know, you turn to bowl over a little
bit more. So, trying to find a balance of plan fast,
but uh, plan under control. Is it encouraging that some
one of the things y'all did didn't do well against
the Pistons, y'all were able to practice.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Not to put them.

Speaker 8 (07:04):
Yeah, I felt like we uh had bodies on bodies
and didn't give up to many officers of rebounds. And
third against the Pistons, we had to put two on
the ball a lot, which okay, just kind of left
us going on. We on the backside and we able
to give office of rebounds and that type of stuff
keeps teams in the game. So tonight we kept body
on body, we switched a lot, made 'em to shoot,
you know, shoot over us, and we was able to

(07:25):
get a a great win.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
Sor he looked great in the first half where he
looked very comfortable in the second half.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Were you like about the fact that this was a complete.

Speaker 8 (07:31):
Team then, yeah, I mean you looked down the line.
I mean everybody scored. We got seven in double figures.
You know, that's usually the formula if you wanna have
to win. You know, everybody moving to basketball playing together,
get good shots up and uh, you know, winning off, uh,
winning a possession back. I mean it's pretty even to night,
but we can't like last game, I think we was

(07:54):
negative to eight to ten or shot the ten. So
we gotta we gotta make sure we get a shot up.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
Was that the supper bow Qualito shots games to the
six in the second day?

Speaker 8 (08:03):
Yeah, I mean, be honest, he just finished more. I
mean last game, we couldn't get a shot to go down.
For this game, we just converted a little bit more.
Guitared came in, gave us a huge spark off the
bench is what we needed. Really came and gave us
a huge spark. So we don't need that going forward
from everybody.

Speaker 6 (08:20):
This isn't about this isn't about tonight's game. But you're
pretty warm up for all the balanced stuff. How long
has that been part of your routine and how much
do you think that benefits your game right now?

Speaker 8 (08:28):
Uh's been a part of my routine for about twelve
years now. Yeah, excuse me, just me ready, just be
prepared to shoot those off balanced shots, one layers, fadeaways,
you know, so always trying to stay ready.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Did you feel familiar with Josh.

Speaker 8 (08:46):
Healthy helped out a lot. I know Josh like the
back of my hand, you know, playing with him last
two years the Phoenix. You know exactly his mindset out there.
He's a hard nose, you know, pick you at ninety
four feet type of guy, and then he's drive a
close out, make the right play, finish.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Over the rim.

Speaker 8 (09:02):
So I feel like this is our environment. It's perfect
for him being able to fly around, do a lot
of things defensively, uh, and cut to around and get
easy points of office in me. So great game from
him to night.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
You may talked about your willness has some pass, how
much easy doesn't make it our entire team, and you
have teammates that are willning the passespecially off a double team.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
Yeah, just keeps everybody relaxed.

Speaker 8 (09:21):
You know, when when you're not passing the ball, everybody
feels a little bit more tense down now when their
opportunity is gonna come. So when we move the ball
and guys know we're gonna make that extra pass from
a great from a good to a great shot. Then
you can you just play more relaxing. You're better all
around when you just more relaxes.

Speaker 6 (09:38):
Do you think Reed is gonna thrive with all the
attention paid to both you and out for it? Seems
like you got a Audimos kick out three pots?

Speaker 8 (09:44):
Yeah, I mean yeah, So I think Reed is gonna
continue to take advantage of his opportunities. And you know,
we need him to be aggressive to make the right play,
and tonight he was aggrested to score.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
Goddamn, He'll make the correct play. You know.

Speaker 8 (09:56):
I love is passing from the from the skip, passing
from and you know, out of the pick and roll,
and his vision is pretty elite. So we're gonna need
to read to play with even more confidence and keep
Brian and keep keep coming out there and playing with
that energy. When Tari gets things doing, particularly in the
outside like that, what can they do this? I mean
it just changes our team.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
I mean you see it.

Speaker 8 (10:16):
I mean you see who went from You know, it's
pretty much like a four or five point game. He
got in there and got it going, went up fifteen
to twenty and controlled the game from there. So he's
a wild card. Most night's team's not gonna expect him
to come out there and get us that punch offensively.
You know, obviously you know double digit score, you know,
but to get twenty points a game, twenty points, hit

(10:38):
five three and still guard up and do the stuff
that he does, you know, that's gonna take this to
another level of people.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
Team to play away. Was it for you to get
the first of the team, I mean it.

Speaker 8 (10:48):
Was stressful the last couple of nights, you know, being
all too feel like you could have won those two games.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
You know, it's it's stressful, but you.

Speaker 8 (10:57):
Know how much we love the game, un much we
love winning. To come in here and get to whil great.
