Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, what's going on everyone? This is Scott Anderson from
Finger eleven and you're listening to Brandon Morell on KYBN
ninety eight point one, your Bay Area Broadcasting.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Network, and welcome inside the backstage past of course, busy
day full of shows and happy holidays to everybody out
there too, KYBN ninety eight point one, your Bay Area
Broadcasting Network and THCHWN dot orgon powered by the Sports
Guys podcast dot com, and of course out there on
iHeartRadio podcast and brand new records coming out every Friday,
of course, right around the CMA Awards. Here two for
(00:30):
the fifty ninth annual show there in Nashville, Tennessee. And
Scott Anderson of the great group of Finger eleven joining
us here on the show. Scott, how you doing, brother,
I'm doing great man. Good to have you here too.
To talk a little bit of this music. Well, let's
talk about this. This was the first record in quite
a while you guys have put out. Last Night on
Earth came out to November the seventh. Tell us all
about this one, and great selection of songs on this record.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Well, thanks so much. It took a very long time
to pick those songs. There's some new ideas, but there's
also some older musical ideas that we decided to dust
off and try to make modern but also keep what
was you know, I guess a classic Finger eleven element.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Whatever was there.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
You know that this record really does sort of it
runs the eras we We had a lot of time.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
To put it together and really proud of it.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
I think it's you know, it's it's it's heavy as
far as guitars go, and then sometimes it it it
it leaves that area, and I like those moments just
as much. I really, I really like how the record
turned out. I think the whole band's very very happy.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
When you look at the kickoff song, I always look
at like that song that sets the tone for the album.
I'll mention it's kind of like my five AM workout
jam when you look at Adrenaline and this is just
really one of those songs that just, man, you guys
really dig in deep with this and like send a
message about just kind of how life takes you on
that ride and when you're full of this, you gotta,
you know, let it out somehow too. Was that like
the perfect fit for the record to like open it
(02:08):
for you guys?
Speaker 1 (02:10):
It is for me as far as the tone goes right,
Like it's a heavy song, but it's not an angry song.
It's it's almost it's it's it's it's more affirming than
than than anything else.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
So I love that.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
I love keeping the heaviness of the of the music,
but also like kind of getting away from the more
negative stuff. I think it's a I think that sets
a really good tone for the record.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
When you guys think back of your career, man, you
guys have done it all, no doubt about it too.
And and like I said, had success on all those
great songs you know, such as Man Paralyzer and and
Slow Chemical and and one thing. When you look back
at it, what are you most proud of for those
particular tunes that now they're like radio anthems around the
country these days.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Well, you know, it's very difficult to to you know,
nobody had a crystal all. It is difficult to sort
of predict the success of any of those.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Songs, but it is.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
It's it's nice, you know, after the after the first
couple of records, we uh, I'm most proud of the
self titled record because that's where that's that's where I
think we first came into our own sonically.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
I really I think that we put a really.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
We put our best foot forward, you know, just kind
of being in charge of of of of the soundscape
and the songwriting. I know a lot of fans love
the first two records, they're they're they're very good. But
we we decided to really trust ourselves on the third
record and be in charge of more aspects of the.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Songs more than ever.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
And then that's the song, that's the that's the song
the album that one thing is from. And so not
only did we have a record we're very proud of,
all of a sudden, we have this like we have
this kind of ballad that it's like, you know, we're
not really known for about we're a heavier band, but
we we like that. We like that sound just as
(04:06):
much as our heavy stuff, and it be you know,
it became a single and it took us all over
the world. And then the next record, you know, Paralyzer
is you know, uh, orders of magnitude more popular than
anything we've ever done, you know, and people don't seem
(04:28):
to be sick of it, you know, I mean, we're
not really sick of playing it. It's it's it's the
amount of energy you get from a crowd when you
play that song is pretty special, you know, like there is.
I think some bands have hits and they they can't
stand playing them, or you know, they resent them. But
I'm happy to say I'm not in that position. I
(04:48):
really I like our hits, I like our album tracks.
I'm happy with all of it.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Well, time to play went off the new record last
night on Earth. Here it is from Scott Anderson and
the group Finger eleven K y B in ninety eight
point one your Bay Area broadcasting network. Crack it out.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Cannot good things remain and lasts for one morning night.
But I can't make you stay, even though you've been
weighed in the changes I said I'd make for too long.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
Well, last thing, before you go, I'll never change for you.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
You'll know.
Speaker 7 (05:47):

I may as well be the last now on earth.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
For all our words against we said a lot of
time's worth.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
We should little talk like this so long before.
Speaker 7 (06:23):
But I'm just talking open lead a closing doors because
I can't make you stay, even though you've then weighed
in the changes.
Speaker 6 (06:35):
I said I'd make for you long one last thing
before you go.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
I'll never change for you, you know.
Speaker 6 (06:45):
But nothing's right when all you say is nothing's wrong,
nothing's right.
Speaker 5 (06:52):
When all you say it's nothing's wrong. I can't tell
you they don't be all right.

And welcome back here to the show again. Last Night
on Earth the latest album here Scott Anderson joining us
here of the world renowned group Finger eleven here on
the Backstage Pass powered by the Sports guysopodcast dot com.
When you look at this one, give us some backstory
of how this one came about and to be another
perfect title track for this this new album.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Well last that on Earth was the result of like
just a really heavy argument.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
That I was having with my significant other and.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
I just had I had nowhere to put my emotions
except you know, down on paper and to song, and
it was just this idea of like, ah, man, you know,
things were said. Everything feels strange. I don't know what
tomorrow is going to feel like, you know. I think
the irony is that I don't remember the argument. I
(11:57):
don't remember the the the what was what was so important?
But I did get the song down and I think
it turned out really really nice. I I I love
sad songs.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
I love I love other people's pain.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
I I don't like being on this side of it
as much, but I do.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
I do love how the song turned out.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Also, off of there was a very popular so far
the great review since it's been out there on the
seventh of the month. There Blue Sky Mystery Filter has
been around a long time, Like I said, their track
record speaks for itself. How did this collaboration come together
for this one in particular Blue Sky Mystery.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Well, you know, we hadn't been our you know, finger
Leven has not had anything UH have had, haven't made
a record in a minute, and we want to make
a big splash. So we thought, you know what, who
could we ask, what would who whose voice would sound
great on this record? And we reached out. We we
(13:00):
reached out to uh Filter and you know, I had
a long talk with him about the song and he
was really really into it. He got it, and we
did a remote recording session because he's all the way
out of l in La and we're in Canada.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
And it was really really.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
I just I just love I think it's very difficult
to interpret somebody else's lyrics and melody and kind of
nail it, and he was so good at it. That
was done remotely, but we we we got a chance
to do a video together in person. That was really fun.
Video shoots are very strange because you know, they're hectic,
there's not a whole lot of time, and he just
(13:44):
had a day off and was you know, blowing through
Toronto and took the time out to hang out and
you know, we the CAMRA's rolling and we uh we
sang the song as if we'd sung it a million
times together, you know, so pretty magical. He's he's a
very approachable, very nice person, and I think that's gonna
(14:06):
lead to us doing some more stuff together. We might
be doing some touring. But you know, I'm really happy
how it all turned out. It's it's again a song
that's got a lot of a lot of positive energy
to it. You know, it's about trying to uh, it's
(14:27):
it's about obsession. It's trying to figure out something.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
The big tour of course, you guys are coming up
Canadian tour that with I know, coming out there with
the tea Party Headstones. This is gonna be kind of cool,
uh to get out there, to always tell people, you know,
check out Finger eleven dot com and of course check
out Instagram. There's a lot of links up there. And
this is cool to me, playing you guys at the
home country and getting a chance to really spread this
music to your fans and in a lot of ways.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Oh, it's it's gonna be very special and this scope
is bigger than anything Finger eleven has been able to
bring you know, like there's like you know, a huge,
huge lighting, huge production, huge sound. It feels good to
kind of do it the right way, you know. And
you know we're we're gonna be playing a bit of
(15:13):
new stuff, but we're gonna be mostly playing stuff that
the fans want to hear. You know, fans have a
they they've got a way to let you know exactly
what they want to hear.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
And we're listening.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Well, time to play the second we're gonna listen here
on the show some it's called the Mountain Scott Anderson
finger eleven here KYB in ninety eight point one year
Bay Area Broadcasting Network. We crank it up.

And welcome back here to the show again, Scott Anderson,
kind enough, you want to see your finger eleven. Talk
a little bit about the latest record last night on Earth,
so a little bit of backstory. I love where songs
come from and the creativity behind them, whether it's written
by an artist or sometimes we have talked about artists
love to get pitch songs that they don't write because
sometimes they have their greatest careers off of theirs. Hence
George Strait on there too. This was a great song
(21:23):
here too, and told a nice story for the Mountain.
Speaker 1 (21:26):
It's nice to kind of you know, set set a
time and a place. You know, there's like this kind
of like fantastic element to the song. But you know,
as a as a nice parallel, it's it's it's about
trying to find that song. It's trying to you know,
trying to find the trying to dig through and find
(21:46):
the music. You know that that was sort of the
inspiration of the song for me. And you know, this
was one of the very first ones we finished for
this record, and it became, you know, the target for
all other songs were like, this song does have it all.
This is this is pretty good. Like the bridge is awesome,
the chorus is good. You know that it has a
(22:09):
sweet beginning. You know it's got it's got everything. You
you know, you want all parts to match and and
and feel great, and you want to get in and
get out and not waste anybody's time. And uh, I
think that's that's what most of the uh, what most
of the songs were going for and achieved.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
Tell us about Cold Concrete off of there too, Man,
it's another one. You kind of feel like you put
yourself in that song and you're like, man, I can
really feel like coming out on the other side, I've
either been there before, had that experience, or I could
really feel what this song is about.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
Well, Cold Concrete had a set like it was it
was written, it was already done, and it was it
was far more negative, uh, and like it had this
really kind of like eerie, hopeless tone to it.
Speaker 3 (22:56):
And I didn't like that.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
I I that's not where I am mentally, you know.
But this song, this idea had been around for long
enough that you know, the guys liked the music and
I didn't like the lyrics. I had to change it.
I had to change the tone and it was you know,
I had to change it from like that sort of
downer element, and I wanted to make sure that the
(23:21):
positive voices broke through. And that's exactly that's that's like
I kind of hit the nail on the head. That's
what ended up sort of, that's where the song ended up.
And I'm I'm very happy because I think once you
you know, for me, once I write a song, I'm
done to try to like rewrite and have it be
(23:43):
a different idea.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
It is very difficult for me.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
But I am happy because again, like there's I wanted
the record to be far more optimistic than anything else,
and so.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
It you know, I fit it for my.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
For just for a more modern, modern mental picture of
how I'm actually feeling. It's like, let's put let's put
more positivity out versus you know, anything else.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
I know you had to be a WWE fan growing up,
because I go back to a slow chemical song and
been a fan for over twenty years in my lifetime.
Slow Chemical was Cane's song. The Wrestler came for many
many long his intro song. It just had that fear.
It brought to the ring, that intimidating factor, the presence,
(24:31):
that aura you talk about when he's walking down the
aisle and then hearing you guys singing in the background.
That has to be a highlight for you guys, I
guess one being ww fans, and then two that a
wrestler wants to take one of your songs and like
really set the tone for their match and like their
their aura as they come in the arena.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Right, Yeah, I mean that's as big as it gets.
Speaker 1 (24:51):
You know, We've had a lot of fans of wrestling
come to us, you know, through that song, and it's, uh,
that's that's been a big song.
Speaker 12 (25:01):
You know.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
There's there was a point where we didn't play it
live for a long long time. It's it's a tricky
song to to sing, you know, I'm kind of I'm
really letting it rip. It's it's it's it's uh.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
It definitely does something to my uh, you know, I'm
using all of my vocal abilities when I'm when I'm
singing that song. But it was funny because I remember
being in the studio. I'm usually standing and like doing
everything I can to sort of get amped.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
Up to sing. I remember just sitting on a stool
and just kind of bracing myself and singing it. And
that's that, you know.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
I sang it maybe once or twice, and that's kind
of the take. But we have decided to bring that
song back for you know, not only this tour, but
for the foreseeable future, because again, there's a lot of
there's a lot of fans that have let us know
that that's something they want to hear. So I'm gonna
(25:59):
take the bullet for that, and I'm gonna do the
best job I can. We're gonna play so chemical because
it means a lot to a lot of people.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Love it to just be being a great WWE fan
out there too and still love to watch it. Man,
it's such a great escape out there from your mind
from the everyday world, and it's just kind of cool
to watch a show and watch those athletes perform out
there too. Hey, let me ask you this question. It
seems it is the hot topic out there. It's like
the elephant in the room. If you don't ask it,
you'll never know. But I mean, I see pros and
cons to how AI has kind of changed, you know,
(26:28):
the music musicians shift today. Don't think it's really changed.
I mean songs in a lot of ways too as well.
But I still love the fact is because I'm pure
to its core, when I love as much as a
songwriter as much as I do the artist that's recorded.
What advantages pros and cons do you see about AI
and how it's impacted music and where is it going
for the future.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
Well, I don't know where it's going for the future.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
I'm not sure. I mean, i'm not sure. I love it,
and I'm not sure there's much I can do about it.
The only thing I can do is kind of you know,
I don't know what I've learned writing songs over and
over and over, but you know, I only know when
they're done.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
And I hope that you'll still be able to tell,
you know, the human from the from the robot. You know,
I hope they don't write me out of it. I
hope they don't write me out.
Speaker 5 (27:21):
Of a job.
Speaker 3 (27:22):
But you know, like Finger eleven runs, you know, on
my side, anyway.
Speaker 1 (27:27):
You know, lyrically, you know, vocally, melodically, it's all run
on emotion, you know, good, bad, happy, said whatever, whatever
that spectrum is. But there's a genuine element when you
see a band play their instruments and they do it right.
Sometimes they do it wrong other times like there's just
something real about it that will never be replaced. There's
(27:51):
gonna be more things that are convenient, and you know,
it's it's always going to be a pain in the
ass to get a bunch of dudes in a room
together try to make something. I mean, you know, look,
it's it takes us far too long. But you know,
I listened to my new album and I know it's
worth it. So I'm just you know, I'm going to
put my blinders on and just try to keep doing
(28:11):
what I'm going to do, and then the rest of
the world can do whatever it's gonna do.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
That's all you can do, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
Hey, when it comes to some downtime and you're kind
of away for music or not touring things like that,
what do you like to do spend time with family?
Speaker 3 (28:23):
Like, what hobbies? What are you into? I like to
spend time like so with my family.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
I've got a five year old and I've you know,
I've really steered him towards Lego. And you know, it
was like he was talking about oh, like he was
wanting he wanted to change this leg like this can
this Lego transform? And I was like, well no, but
there is these guess what, dude, there's these things called transformers,
(28:47):
and Lego just put out this, uh you know, there's
a transformer called sound Wave and this like this is
massive Lego set and it costs hundreds of dollars and
I was like, you know what, why don't I buy this,
you know for my kids?
Speaker 5 (29:01):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (29:01):
And so that's been able.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
I've been able to justify that purchase. But we built
it together and he's been really good, Like he's a
very good assistant. You know, he's five, but he gets
how to read instructions and pick out parts and put
them together and he he's really into it.
Speaker 3 (29:17):
Now I have to work on him.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
I'm a I love pinball and I've recently picked up
I've got a pinball machine and that's what I like
to do in my downtime.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
If I'm on the road, I like to find a
good pinball place and like go there. That's that's like
my escape.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
I also love board games and video games, but there's
something very very special about pinball. I think it's just
because of the physical tactile feel of it. And they're
still putting out really really cool games nowadays.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
But yeah, those you know other.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
Than like movies and music and things like that. But
it's it's it's it's mostly games for me.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
I love that too. It's good stuff right there, all right.
Cuisine wise, what kind of food when you get into craving?
You know, for me it's like the Italian food when
you get that craving, or you like a cook in
your household? Do you mean everybody? Of course we love
to eat out when it comes to like just the
genuine care of food, the immediate type of gratification on
that too.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
What do you like to get into food wise?
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Well, I don't think there's much better than the the
the humble McDonald's cheeseburger.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
There can't like you can't really beat it.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
I will love like I like to get you know,
if it's like a local chicken place whatever whatever, like
whatever their version of like a Nashville chicken is that
that would be something for me I mean.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
At home, I cook a lot.
Speaker 12 (30:40):
The the.
Speaker 1 (30:42):
My my wife's pregnancy and the pandemic really put me
in the driver's seat. So I've learned a lot. I've
learned a lot how not to burn water. Uh, you know,
I can make a I can make a decent salmon.
You know that, and that that's kind. It's gratifying to
be able to put to put a meal together. But
you know, I will I like eating very very badly,
(31:05):
and you know, everything that's bad for you. That's typically
what I what, I what I enjoy. Although if there's
a cob salad on the menu, I will take that.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
I will take that any day of the week. With you.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
Chick fil A has got one of the best. I
can drive through there and eat cop sell in any
day of the week. Down here from Chick fil A. Hey,
we'll finish with this one. Talk about you guys have
been doing this mentioned a long time there, the camaraderie
and the importance of just not just being a band
on stage and performing, but at the same time doing
things outside of the performance side of things and the
studio side, going to have fun, and how important that
(31:40):
camaraderie is for just a group to stick together for
as long as you guys have and and such an
important criteria to succeed in the music business.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
It really is.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
And that's one of the really nice perks of touring.
Since we're you know, since we're all like family dudes,
and we're at home, we just don't get to get other.
But if we're on the road and we got to
eat or there's a movie playing, you know, we'll all
you know, it's it's a great excuse. It's like, hey, look,
we got to we're working, you know, let's let's go
(32:13):
to this like really nice steakhouse and have some fun.
You know, we're like, oh, if it's and you know,
if it's somebody's birthday, all the better because we'll go
to like a really nice place and we'll look like
we can't afford it, but we'll you know, we'll have
a great time and we'll enjoy a really.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
Nice meal and you know, make stupid jokes and have
a great time together.
Speaker 12 (32:33):
You know.
Speaker 3 (32:34):
It's it's it's nice to say that we still do
enjoy each other's company.
