You are tuning in to the Badand Bougie Moms podcast show. My

(01:02):
guys, this is spread with yourbat and boot your Mom's podcast. Today
is August the six, two thousandand twenty, and it's actually my husband's
birthday, so definitely give a shoutout to him. He's thirty nine and
fine, so so yeah, sohappy birthday, Booth. All right,
So on today's episode, we're prettymuch just gonna get into how to actually

(01:23):
prepare for virtual learning. I knowa lot of us came down to the
decision to either and have our kidsgo back to school or actually become full
time teachers again and teach him inthe home. So this podcast is just
going to cover a couple of tipsand tricks just to get the kids ready,

(01:44):
you know, get their mindset preparedto start learning and soaking in all
their information, and also us asparents just getting us organized and seeing how
we can you know, be therethe best way to support our kids.
But before we get started, youknow, I'm definitely going to share a
couple of things that's been going onin my life. So of course I

(02:07):
mentioned that today it's my husband's birthday. However, for the month of August
and September, um, it's definitelybusy for my family. So with him,
he definitely kicks off our little birthdaycelebration for you know, August of
six, and then on August totwenty first's at our actual wedding anniversary,

(02:29):
so we definitely celebrate that. Ithink it would be three years that we've
been married now, so yeah,it feels great. I'm not tired yet,
so that's good. Um. Andthen on August of twenty eight it's
my birthday. Shout out to theBurgos, you know what I'm saying,
We're the best. And then Augustthe thirtieth, it's Mason's birthday. He'll
be ten years old this year,so the big hitting the double digits.

(02:53):
Um, he feels like he shouldhave a cell phone now. I told
him, you know, he justhad to sit to his iPad. Message
is I'm until I until we feellike he is mature enough so he was
okay with that. He's probably stillgonna ask for her cell phone, wants
his birthday gets here, But yes, So August thirtieth is Mason's birthday,
and then September the seventh is Kylin'sbirthday. She's the oldest out of our

(03:17):
girls. She would be the bitthirteen. She's like me, She's super
chill. She's like, yo,I just I just want to roller skates.
Like that's it. Like I'm goodon everything else, but I would
like to have some roller skates.Oh, and cheesecake. She definitely loves
cheesecake. And then after that it'sour other daughter's Rega's birthday. Her birthday

(03:38):
is at the end of September.I want to say September the twenty second,
I have to look at my calendar. I get her and Calyn confused.
And then after that it's the smallestbirthday. His birthday is October to
tempt So yeah, so from AugustOctober it's definitely, you know, celebration
months for us. We enjoy it. However, with the whole social dissident

(04:00):
going on, and you know howeverything is shut down in this world,
were just having to try to findways to be creative and just you know,
make sure we still have fun.So yeah, so shout out to
August. We love it and again, happy birthday, Rayshan. All right,
so I'm next so that I don'twant to talk about. I'm not
sure if you guys have been experiencinganything as far as delays with FEDETS,

(04:26):
but lord Jesus, I'm getting pissiedeven thinking about it. So I'm in
the process of redoing the boys roomand I ordered these beds from Wafer I
want to say, almost three weeksago. I knew that they were supposed
to come this week, well actuallynext week sometime, but I'm not next
week. No, they were supposedto come last week sometime. And I'll

(04:49):
keep on, you know, lookingat the FedEx app or whatever, and
the fetest app keep on saying, well the first day said that they attempted
to deliver it and no one washere. That's lie, because we ain't
going nowhere. Somebody was here.So I end up calling FEDETS and you
know, she was like, oh, well, yeah, that actually didn't
try to deliver it. It wasactually still on the truck. True,

(05:14):
Or why y'all gotta lie? Whyy'all appear on the app saying that y'all
try to deliver it and it's stillit's still at the warehouse or whatever the
truck and she was like, oh, well, sometimes the app is just
slower, you know what. Whatever. Fuck that, Like, I just
want my ship at this point. So the next day come, she was
like, hey, you know someone'sgonna be out there tomorrow. All right,
next day come, nobody comes.I have another update saying that it's

(05:38):
gonna be delivered the next day.So of course I got time because I
ain't doing nothing else. I calledher back while I called FedEx back,
and I'm like, hey, itdid it again. They said, you
know that someone tried to deliver it, no one was here. We're still
here, you know what's up.She's like, oh well, let me
I'll reach out to dispatch and seewhat's going on. So again they're saying
that it's still at the warehouse. So today's stay three. I am waiting

(06:01):
for my package. I actually havethe windows open so I could look and
see, you know, if they'recoming. They said that it requires the
signature. That's fine. I wassigned off my stuff. It's just the
point now I just I just needall my items because the beds. I
have two beds that's on this Fetesttruck, and I also have a table
that I am in desperate need upbecause I'm ready to go ahead and get

(06:24):
this project started. So yeah,so that's my whole Fetest tobacco whatever the
next up. Y'all know how Ilove to do my Target shop at and
Target has spelled me for the firsttime. So last week I did my
little drive up Target app shopping andstuff. Get to the register, to

(06:45):
the little checkout screen clip check outshit FROs. I'm like, all right,
cool, you know it, freezeus up. It's just ghost blank.
I didn't get a confirmation in anything, so I went back. I
did everything again, got my confirmationall that sudden. Next enuff, I
checked my bank account and I seenthat they charged me twice because apparently the

(07:08):
first order went through and the sacredorder went through. So I'm like,
all right, So of course, thinking this should be a simple fits instead
of you know, having to gothrough drive through now, because obviously I
gotta go in so I can getthis ship corrected. I'm like, all
right, all I gotta do isjust returned the items that I don't need
because it's a double order. SoI get there, I tell the young

(07:28):
lady, hey, you know it'sa system glitch. I just need to
return these items, you know whatever, y'all. It took me a good
hour to get this girl to justtake the Airstra items back. So she
was like, okay, let meget my manager. I'm not sure if
I'm able to do this because it'son the app. I'm like, yo,
like if I just need to walkout and then walk back in with

(07:49):
the stuff and say I don't wantit, like I would do that.
However, we can make this moresimpler for you, like you just let
me know. And so she endsup taking this stuff fall she's saying,
okay, well you know you shouldsee or first of all, she said
that the money Ashley was not takingout your account yet, it's just a
credit hole. I'm like, nowa girl look at and I put up

(08:11):
my account like, now a girl, look at this. It says dash
this amount like na, that's takingout my account is less like that's taking
it out. And she was like, oh, well the hole will go
away in three to four days, all right. So she did her little
figuration whatever she tried to do lookat my account in that time. Shit
still that shit still says dash theamount. So I'm like, you know

(08:35):
what, let me go ahead andcall this corporate corporate, just corporate customer
service because I don't got time.So I called corporate customer service. Luckily,
you know, I got some littlesmart girl on the phone that's good
a map because she was able tolook at the idol. She was like,
oh, yeah, so we oweyou, um gall it's like at
least a hundred and fifty dollars thatthey owed me that the little girl,

(08:56):
the other little girl at the storedidn't do. She was like, yeah,
we owe you this much away.Whatever. And then once the once
the ship may comes to your home, you know it's gonna be a double
ship may, so just take itback and then you know, just get
your refund to save shit I saidbefore. So I'm like, all right,
cool whatever. So yes, soat the end of the day,
I got my money back. Shoutout to Target. However, I am

(09:16):
very very skeptical about using that appbecause I do not want that to happen
again. But yeah, she saidthat I wasn't the only one who actually
went through it, so I'm assumingit was something going on with the app
but but whatever whatever. So lastly, before we go ahead and get into
the meat and bones of the podcast, I just want to let y'all know

(09:39):
that I'm not ready for the kidsto go back to school. I do
not feel like being responsible. Ilike the fact that they can wake up
in their own cooks, you know, make cereal, cook them a little
bit of oatmeal, and play theirgames. I ain't line my son Mason.
He has to be lolled off forschool at seven forty in the morning.
Who got time for that? Andthen Kaylin she has to be logged

(10:01):
in at nine. So the onlygood thing I can see coming out of
this is that, Guest, Iam definitely back on my regular schedule for
the rest of the year, andI get to work out in the morning
while Mason starts school, because ofcourse, I mean, we're trying to
teach them how to wake up byaluren, but they ain't working right now,
so I have to be the oneto actually wake him up. And
since I'm already up, might aswell go hand to work out. So

(10:24):
that's the only thing that I seethat can come out that's good about this,

(10:58):
all right, So the first thingthat we're gonna cover is what I
don't shood you purchase for the kidsvirtual school area. So the first album
that you definitely should purchase that,I mean, I think everybody should know
because it is pretty important. Ishaving a good chair, you know,
something that is very comfortable for thekids, especially since they're going to probably

(11:20):
be at the computer for extended amountsof time. I know here in my
district, the way they're doing virtuallearning is pretty much alive class the entire
time. They switched classes like theywould normally do if they were in school.
So they will log on, they'llhave their first break, they'll switch.
However, I don't know if it'sanother Googling or someone just pops up.

(11:41):
I'll find that out on Monday. But at the end of the day,
they will be in those in thechairs for a very long time.
So make sure you get a chairthat's very comfortable, that's you know,
the correct size for them, thatthey can have correct posture. Two good
places to actually look for chairs willprobably be Amazon Staples. I'm more so
for a Staples girl. I feellike they're I like to be able to

(12:03):
go in and actually see the chairand see you know the make of it
and you know how it looks, versus you know you're ordered from Amazon.
You're just looking at the star. It's like, all right, you got
a fire star. I'm gonna goahead and order this ship. And then
you come and it's like in twentypieces and you're like, all right,
I'm gonna put this shair together. So yeah, So I personally would say
Staples, but you can definitely getgreat chairs from Amazon, all right.

(12:26):
Number two is purchasing purchasing a reliablecomputer. So my pick on this,
especially for students and learning, willdefinitely be the Google Chrome Books. I
know that a majority of the schoolsthat's here in Georgia, they do work
on a Chrome book. Thankfully.Thank god, our district is actually providing

(12:48):
Chromebooks to the kids this year forvirtual learning. I know for a fact
that's not how it is everywhere.Like some people on school districts are making
them actually going by computers, whichthat is crazy to me because it's like,
where's youall finance department that like yougot to prepare for the unknown?
So y'all didn't have no grant y'all, ain't you know? With saving money

(13:09):
to the side. Um, youknow, it is twenty twenty, a
lot of things are going digital,so why you guys can't supply your your
students with computers. But that's neitherhere nor there AnyWho. So I would
suggest Google Chrome Book. We actuallyalready had bought one for the kids prior
to all this happening, so theyknow the platform. Um it's super easy.

(13:30):
They can't like be you know, doing crazy stuff on it or whatever,
So Google Chrome Book would definitely bea goodbye. Um. Also,
um, I'm a Apple's product girl, like I record my podcast on a
on a map book, but Ialso own a Windows um a Windows PC,

(13:50):
which I love, so anything Windowsof course Apple. And also um,
HP is it's really good especially forkids. And then they have like
humongous sizes with like the full keyboardson there. So if they you know,
need to be able to see alarge screen versus you know, a
little fourteen inch Um, definitely lookingto that all right. So number three

(14:13):
is, of course you need toset up a separate workspace for your kids
to do their work. So um, you know, if we don't want
them laying in the bed, layingon the couch, you know whatever.
Because first of all messes up theirposture, saying of all, who you
know, that's where you sleep. You're not even supposed to do things in
the bed. Pause, not thatthing, you know what I'm saying,

(14:33):
Like you ain't supposed to eat oranything in the bed. You know,
you go to bed to sleep. So make sure you set up, you
know, a separate workplace. Wewant them to be able to focus throughout
the day, all right. Numberfour, it's very important unless you want
to learn, you know, thesame things your kids are learning at the
time they are attending school. Youdefinitely want to invest in some headphones.

(14:56):
I mean, I personally don't wantto be learning about Adam and the environment,
especially while I'm working, So I'mdefinitely purchased some headphones. I will
suggest, of course, not topurchase Bluetooth so the kids want to have
to worry about, you know, like, oh my god, it's my
Bluetooth headphones charging or whatever. Somake sure it's the ones that actually have

(15:18):
the wires. You can find thoseat Target that normally they are on like
sell for like twelve bucks. Ifthat ear bus will work too, Just
the one that you can actually hookup to the computer versus having a versus
having a Bluetooth connection. I ain'tgot some nests. So we're gonna talk

(16:03):
about how to set up and organizeshare a learning space. Need some water?
Oh please, Lord Jesus, thatwas amazing, all right, So
here are some tips about how toset up and organize your learning space.

(16:25):
So the first thing first as alwaysget your child's opinion on where they would
like to be. I mean, you know, their little personalities do matter.
So if you know, you mighthave a kid who was like,
hey, you know, mom,I just want something in my room.
I'm cool learning by myself. Youknow, I can stay on tasks.
I don't need to be out inthe open, you know, just set
me up there. Or you canhave you know, the total opposite where

(16:48):
you have a kid who likes tobe in the midst and they were like,
nah, I need to see what'sall going on, you know throughout
the day. I want to seefolks in the dining room. I want
to see what you're eating for breakfastand for lunch. You know, you
can definitely set them up in acommon area. So for example, my
daughter Kaitlin, she is a seventhgrader. She's super disciplined and she honestly
don't care about being in the midst. So probably having a small area in

(17:12):
her room where she can you know, set up her computer and deaths and
her items and things like that willdefinitely probably be great for her. Now
that Mason that that middle son,um nah, total opposite. He wants
to be in the midst and hecan't stay on task, to say,
his safest life. So I woulddefinitely either have him right by me or

(17:33):
he can be like in an openarea where it's people you know, constantly
walking by, just checking on him, you know, making sure that he
is staying on tasks. So twototally different personalities. But yes, the
first thing he wants to do isdefinitely get the opinion of your you know,
of the kids or where they werelike to be. So my tips
on that as far as when um, excuse me, my tips on that

(18:00):
as far as you know, whenyou're setting up the work area and you
know, just making sure that everythingis squared away for them. If your
child is quiet and self sufficient, most likely you know they're in middle school
or high school, just make surethat if you do set them up in
their own room or you know theyhave their door close or things like that.
Just check them dom proodically, justto make sure you know, they

(18:22):
know that you're there if they needany assistance. As far as the smaller
kids, you know, elementary school, preschool age, definitely set them up
in a common area. If they'reat the point where they can actually be
with you in the same area, that would actually be cool as well.
Of course, this would just beable to give you give them a little

(18:42):
bit more support that if they haveany questions or if they don't understand anything
why the classes are going on,they can definitely turn to you and ask
questions if needed. But definitely forboth kids, make sure they take enough
breaks and they stretch, especially sittingin you know, in a computer chair

(19:03):
for so long. NET pain isdefinitely real. Um. You know,
as adults we know that on workingon computers all the time. So make
sure that um they stretch and theyyou know, tape, raid, shrink
water things like that, um,because you know net strain is really new
streets. Okay, so next we'regonna cover how to set up your learning

(19:48):
area for success. So first thingsfirst, of course, you guys know
I preached this all the time.Keep it to a minimum and organize,
Like if you keep shipped to aminimum, you make sure things are clean,
they stay tidy, everything has itsplace, it's in its place.
You would definitely you would definitely setyourself up for success. Our promise.

(20:08):
So, of course, going backto the whole keeping it clean. Number
one is keep it clean. Wewant the kids to have the best environments
to stay and remain focused. Sokeeping it clean, no distractions. You
know, make sure once they dofinish your work for today, they actually
clean up that area so they canget, you know, a great start
for the next day. You know, we don't want papers to be around

(20:32):
on the table or sprawled out, pencils, things like that. You know,
even as as if I say parentrentals, but even as adults,
we know. You know, whenyou leave your office area when we were
in the office, boom. Youknow, if you leave your office,
they're and messy for the day youcome in. You don't get that good
feeling you get like you know youwell, I know, I know I

(20:55):
got this feeling all the time whenI was working in the office. But
you come in, you see theship on your desk and you're like,
damn, I got do the shitall over again, like it's a hamster
wheel. But if you take timeput yourself up, you know for the
day, Indy, you come inand you just have a clean slate,
it definitely changes your mindset for theday. So we want to take that
in with the kids as well, you know, make sure they keep their

(21:15):
area tight and clean so they knowthat the next time they wake up in
the morning, it's a fresh start. They can clear their space in their
head, mind whatever. So definitelykeep a killing number two it's store how
you use items like pencils, crayons, or you know, paper, either
in foulance cabinets or in buckets onthe desks or also on the wall,

(21:38):
which everyone you prefer. Not sure, you know, it's pretty much gonna
matter on where you have your deathset up. So if you have your
death set up near a wall, you can definitely add some shells to your
wall just to kind of place theitems they used on the daily so they
will have excuse me, so theywill have a home when they clean up.
If you don't have a wall nearyour desk area, you can definitely

(22:00):
buy containers or little buckets that youcan place the items in so you know,
they all know where they go,so that's definitely a go to to
how to store how you use items, all right. Number three, Um,
it's either implement a corkboard or awhite board, um and somewhere in
the kids virtual areas so they'll beable to keep up with important dates or

(22:25):
reminders. Also grab sticking notes ofcourse, I mean that's that's the thing.
We're sticking note queens over here.So um, you know, even
though that it is a digital learningplatform, you would definitely you know,
need to remember stuff that happens, you know, throughout the day you have
a due date or anything like that. So placing you know, small board,
large board in an area where theycan kind of just take quick notes

(22:48):
stick it up there so they canremember will definitely be a plus, all
right. So number four, Um, if your space allows definitely set up
different areas in your home home tocomplete the work. So for example,
you can have a project area,a reading area, work area, and
also like a chill area. Justlike us, kids definitely get restless,

(23:12):
um when they're in one spot allday long, so you know, and
also studies show that if you ifyou work in different areas and hence the
ability for you to remember the shipthat you're studying on. So, um,
definitely, if you have the spacein the home, even if it's
not a large space, just youknow, do do the do at least

(23:32):
a little bit just to change upthe scenery. I know, for me,
when I'm working at my desk,I definitely will sometimes, you know,
grab my laptop and go downstairs andwork in the dining area. Yeah
it's the dining area, but atleast I'm changing the scenery. I'm able
to open up the windows look ata different area outside versus looking out in
my backyard. So just trying tochange it up. Um, just of

(23:56):
course gives air mind of rest frombeing on the computer all the time.
Um, you know, grabbing agood book, you know, making a
little corner nook to read. Youknow, kids love shit like that.
I mean I like stuff like that. So that would definitely be something that
you would that you might want toactually look into. All right, So

(24:17):
hold on, I said last ornot least, but this is not last,
all right. So number five is, um, of course, have
a you need a printer, anyprint paper. Um, even though it's
all digital, there are some thingsthat you might need a hard copy of
UM. And also on the flipside, UM, some kids actually learn
better with hard copies. So thingsthat like, for example, things you

(24:40):
might need to print out is asyllabus for a class or also study guys,
for the kids, you know,if they would rather, you know,
have something they can write notes onon while they're actually doing the digital
learning. So definitely, you know, investing the printer. UM. Honestly,
printers don't even cost that much.I normally buy minds from Staples.
You probably can get like actually agood one for like maybe one hundred and

(25:03):
fifty dollars, Like that's on thetop end. I know, they definitely
have some for like seventy or sixty. But of course they're all Wi Fi
based now, so all you haveto do with just search for the computer
on your laptop and then it shouldjust connect. It's it's not really that
hard to set up, to behonest. But definitely invest in a printer
so you guys will have the optionto print out information all right. And

(25:27):
last, but not least, UMis actually created either online or buying a
paper calendar. Of course, onhaving a calendar is to be able to
keep up with important dates. Buthaving a calendar can actually help us as
parents too, but I would talkmore about that later. All right,

(26:26):
So the last gym I'm gonna dropfor this episode is how to get ready
for virtual learning as a parent. So, um, here are a couple
of tips just to get a jumpstart on prepping for virtual learning to ensure
a smooth and successful year. Iknow for us there are actually I think
we're only gonna be virtual learning forthe first nine weeks and then we'll have

(26:49):
the option to go into the schoolsonto the actual school setting. But I
know it might be some people outthere who choose to do virtual learning for
the whole year, So this woulddefinitely help you, you know, just
kind of get a jump start orjust making sure you're organized as for as
when it comes to the virtual learningatmosphere. All right, So the first

(27:11):
thing you will want to do isset up a family email that has a
calendar attached, so for instance,Outlook email. Of course, my favorite
is Gmail because it's super simple andit's easy to integrate as for as with
devices. So you definitely want toset up an email. And honestly,
you guys, I can't stress thisenough. This is a must have for

(27:33):
me because it does literally make everythingeasier since it's virtual. The reason why
it is and must have is becausethe family email willn't ensure that you do
not miss out on important corresponders fromthe school. Plus, if you need
to make like a virtual conference witha teacher, you know whatever, most
likely since they arguably working on theGoogle platform as well, it'll be it'll

(27:57):
definitely be easy for you to schedulea you know, Google me or a
Zoom call um, just to checkin to make sure you know your kid
is doing great. So um,definitely set up a family email calendar.
Um, you know, if yourkids have their own email address, make
sure that they can't actually view thecalendar so they will know what's going on

(28:18):
as well, or if not, just make sure that they, you know,
have some type of access to thecalendar. Extra too for the whole
Gmail calendar and email, it's that. Make sure you of course putting important
dates on their outside of that, but also um, you know, excuse
me, you know, put thingson there so you know, like for

(28:40):
instance, game night or or youknow, the like the dinner man you
lunched me and you know, stufflike that, so the kids will actually
have something to look forward to.And also if your kids are like me
who likes to eat, that's definitelyanother way for them to make sure they
actually look at the calendar, becauseI honestly I had a calendar out there,
family calendar for years and no onelooked at it. And I'm like,

(29:03):
yo, this is how I keepup with all your stuff. But
once I started putting things on there, like they like like, oh,
we're going to the mall today,We're gonna get our nails done, things
like that, they actually, youknow, look at the calendar. So
I'm definitely put things, you know, just something that would keep them motivated
to kind of you know, stayon tasks. And also this builds character

(29:23):
for when they're when they get older, to learn how to actually you know,
work and learn values in the calendar. Extra extra tip, which I
actually already went over, was definitelythe menu thing. Um. You know,
again, it's still school at theend of the day. They actually
give a cafeteria menu at the beginningof the school year, so you know,

(29:45):
treat your home just like the school. Say hey, Monday through Friday,
this is what I eat it forlunch. I placed it on the
calendar. You shouldn't have to askme. Go look at the calendar if
you want to know what you're eatingfor Tuesday, Taco Tuesday. Everybody know
that. But yes, definitely puton the counter, all right. Number
two is make sure that you downloadall the communication apps that the teachers are

(30:07):
going to be on. UM.Of course, I mean this is a
no brainer. A lot of teachersdon't pick up the phone and call anymore
m So definitely make sure you askthe teacher teach I wish platform they would
like to use as for us tostay in some type of communication UM during
the virtual learning time. Some ofthe some of the apps that I actually

(30:30):
worked on was class Dojo, Bloomsand remind On. Class Sojo and Blooms
were honestly my favorite two. ClassSojo is definitely geared to, you know,
the younger crowd where they can't actuallylike, you know, get rewards
as for us, you know, having good behavior things like that. Blooms
it's more so um, you know, it's a more so I would say,

(30:51):
like the high school level app versusthem the class Dojo, but both
of them app both of the appplatforms are really good. So just make
sure you ask the teacher on whichplatform they enjoy and also get the class
code so you can make sure thatyou're in the correct place. All right.
So you guys, last but notleast, make sure you give your

(31:14):
yourself grace. Everything won't be perfect, as we know, this is definitely
new for all of us. Butif you give yourself grace, um,
just know that it is going tobe another day. If shit doesn't get
done that day, um, don'tbeat yourself up about it. It's again,
it's all new for us, sojust do your best and everything would
be all right. All right, guys, So that is all that I

(31:36):
have for today. I hope youknow you get some type of use out
of these couple of gems that Idrop. If you want to learn more
