Speaker 1 (00:10):
Welcome to episode four seventy eight of five and dive.
It is Monday, July twenty eighth. I'm your host, Craig Goldstein,
joined as usual by Patrick Dubuque and Jeffrey pattern Astro.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
We had a.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Weekend to come up with some banter. I don't know
if you guys, I did not. I don't know if
you guys did other than for me to say, I
don't know if he wants me to, but a belated
every birthday, Patrick dubuk.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Birthday every year.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Now, I got a birthday present for my lovely friend
Andrew Rice. He gave me an autographed Vladimir Balatine rookie card.
And I don't know if you're gonna be able to
see it, and certainly the people listening aren't gonna be
able to see it. But this is the autograph I believe,
and I you know this is you know, forensics on
(00:57):
my part that his name is to be a capital B,
a capital S, capital G. There are three like besides.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
What was the guy.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Look, I'm just saying, when you have a long you
have to sign it a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
They're not first of all, they're not the same letters
as his initials his name, and also there is a
they all look capitalized, and there are three of them.
Like there there is a second space in his name,
like when you write cursive. The whole point is that
you don't pick up the pen. But he just stopped
and picked up the pen and put it back down again.
(01:37):
Is it his middle name? It might be, but I
it's it is basically four letters, three of them capitalized.
It's one of the weirdest signatures I think I've ever seen.
But he hit sixty Horme runs in Japan, so like,
far be it for me to critsize.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Here's here's a little I don't I don't think I
told you this, Patrick, because I forget that because you
don't care about cards this way. But I did. I
got some one of my friends pulled a very fancy card,
uh he and not not your kind of fancy. Your
Your kind of fancy is like, I don't know, nineteen
sixty two tops Wilhelm sixty two, okay.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
A one and a half inch by one inch.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
CARDI ichi ro dual autograph with a piece of jersey
from each or whatever, uh and and then sold it,
which I don't well, I I guess, but isn't the
point to get like, I you know, I don't. I
don't do cards like I don't know. Obviously you don't
(02:38):
really either. But the whole sold he sold it to
he said, I don't know if this is smart enough.
He said it to expire on on I guess yesterday,
the Hall of Fame induction day. Yeah right, I guess
he thought like interest would peak or whatever. But thousands
and thousands of dollars.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
I gotta say, I'm not like, I don't want to
reim it spread um tying back to the last episode,
but uh, like when it comes to little tiny I know, berraids,
tiny little slivers of bat and jersey on a card. Uh,
they like, it's not a jersey anymore. As soon as
you cut it up. It's like, I don't know what
it becomes, but it's no longer a piece of a jersey.
(03:21):
It's just like a shred of fabric. I a jersey
needs to be a full jersey for me. You go, wow,
that's cool, that's a jersey. Otherwise it is it is
literally trash. Yeah, I don't understand the value of a
of a cut. And yeah, the shaved bats like like,
you know, if you like that sort of stuff, like
that's great, like enjoy it, but I cannot. I don't
(03:42):
want a card that has a piece of something in it. Ever,
it doesn't you know, it's an autograph. I'm like, even
autographs are kind of arbitrarily dumb. Right, there's just but
I get it's esthetically speaking, it's more pleasant than looking
at like a little piece of wood that could have
literally come from anywhere, and that we're just kind of
taking on face value that it was part of this
particular bat which no longer exists because it's been cut
(04:04):
up and squared. I can, yeah, yeah, it's more things
because we agree they are and therefore you should sell
them while people still agree that they Yeah, sure that's true.
That's true.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Uh, jeff Any Mandar for you.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yes, I was taking the kid to the aquarium yesterday
and she requested Wrecking Ball. The well, the Kid's Bob
version is what we played for that's what she wants. Apparently, Yes,
this is the mileys Iris song. I don't know if
there's on the Wrecking Ball. It's about a half hour
drive to the aquarium, and once it plays the one song,
(04:40):
the Apple Music algorithm just takes over. Fine, so it
played a Can't Buy Me Love, but the Alwin and
the Chipmunks version. She claimed to have never heard Alvin
and the Chipmunks before. She definitely has, but whatever, it
was very annoying.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Then say, if you've heard it once, you've never stopped
hearing it.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, but do they have a fake fight in the
middle of that one? Too?
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Is No, they don't. Okay, Dave comes in briefly during
the bridge, but they don't do any much with it.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
I just think a day of being like, oh God,
I got upset again. I'm gonna work myself up.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
But then it played the kids pop version of Uptown Funk,
which is as long as the actual version of Uptown Funk,
which is a very long song relatively speaking. Like that's
not the radio edit or anything, right, but uh, the
interesting to me.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
I'm trying to picture the little kid boys doing Julio
get the Stretch.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Well they edit these obviously, right, so they do uh.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
I mean it's not inappropriate.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Well you say that, so that they do that, they
can't say hot damn right. Okay, so they say they
can't say hot damn right, they say too hot? Oh yeah,
which it's it doesn't really work, but fine, but they
kept the they keep the Umptown funk you up parted,
which like, yeah, I know you're not actually, but I
don't care how good The four year old denunciation is
(06:06):
like this when the.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Radio edit for got whatever the Little John song that
was like, would do like skeet skeet seats skeet, Yeah,
and like people just didn't. They were like, yeah, leave
that in. It's fine, right, And it's like, well, if
you're doing.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
A radio yeah, it's not like I'm worried about the
kid Like kids swears constantly because we swear constantly. There's
like we were driving or we were driving to something
in the car. She goes, there's like a little bit
of traffic. She goes, is there a fucking accident up there?
Like I wonder where.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
She heard that. Well, that's just what they're called. Yeah, yeah,
just as they're I mean, it's not yeah, it's your
way of doing this is much better. I swear occasionally,
and my children act like forty five year old school.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Arms, Yeah, come on, let's not do this.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Well, see how that goes in kindergarten conversation with her
about but.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Speaking of collective inhalations, let's go to our first topic.
Judge jury and flexor tendon Executioner Aaron Judge has landed
on the aisle with a flexor tendon spring. He will
need to d H upon his return for an undetermined period.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Well, no, he's only he's going to be ten days
on the ile and then ten days dhing is what
they're saying.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Days.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Yeah, we'll see. That seems very highly specific.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yeah, did they consult the Houston unnecessarily specific.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Training staff on this one? What are we talking about that? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Also, like I guess it's a pain tolerance issue to
some degree.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
It is.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
It's like, like he can't throw right now is the issue.
I don't know how it affects.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
It feels like it could impact it could And also,
like like you said, they're saying, oh, hell DH for
ten days, then I'll be back. But like if he's
not throwing in the meantime, we don't know. And it
is tough for this team because they specifically have a
guy who just the ages.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Yeah, they said Carlos Stant's gonna get some work in
the outfield, so oh okay, well they're gonna They phrased
it like we're gonna put him out there, like I
sue for like Shaggy b Piered in field outfield and
see how it goes. He might need some time to
work his way into being able to play right field, the.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Guy who famously stays healthy all the time.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
It's a small right field. I guess.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Oh, I mean, uh, that's why I've heard last time
he played thirty three games in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
Boy, the defensive metric I looked up first, did not
care for that. Gary Sheffield's looking at that and thinking, Wow,
my defense was fine. I should be in the whole
of thame. Yeah, No, that that seems that seems bad.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
That we should said there's no UCL damage L tear.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
So sure, and also like I guess again that would
impact his his There are guys who do hit with
a UCL tear sure, or a bit Harper did it
for a little bit. I think a Stanton Dominga's corner
outfield rival the Dodgers for like just absolute decrepitude in
(09:32):
the I mean, I guess Domingas is not decrepit. He's
just not good out there. But like ta Oscar her
name is, and Michael Conforto is really bad. It's just
butchery nonsop and yeah, Stanton Domingaz that would be tough.
I mean it would mostly be on Stanton. But Domina
has been rough out there, yes, so uh yeah, that's
(09:56):
that's interesting.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
In other news, the Yankees finally traded for a Rockies
third baseman. We should congratulate them on this, and the
Rockies made a trade in July, so again, you know, handshakes.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
All around Yankees. Yankees still see themselves as buyers, clearly
even went the judge injury in the recent poor form.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Well did the judge injury happen before the trade that happened?
Speaker 3 (10:22):
The trade happened after.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
It happened after McMahon before.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Let's not make judgments based on a nomed Rad as
a Dodgers saying, I can tell you sometimes teams just
trade for him. There's no plan. They cut him shortly after.
It's not important.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Yeah, it's it's really like check out stand. You know
Mento's purchase right there, I was here.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
I do like it is very funny that he gets
to keep the beard because he has a very large
beard and now he can keep his beard, Thank goodness.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Songs it's well trimmed.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Yeah, so they get Ryan McMahon at third base. Patrick,
I opened up the floor. I wrote, you wrote a
Ryan McMahon and a Rockies.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
I sure did. I was a little annoyed because I
had already been writing a Ryan McMahon trad case before. Well,
you know, that's what happens. So I was trying to
look at to see, like what happened if Rockies hitters
are so terrible on the road, which they are, what
happens when suddenly you're just on the road because you've
been traded to a new team. And the answer is nothing. Actually,
most Rockies hitters hit much better after they stopped being Rockies,
(11:27):
especially right away. Like I looked at it, and like,
there's the Rockies have traded like sixteen significant veterans in
thirty five years, which is somehow kind of impressive of itself,
and like ten of them were immediately stars and got
like Daryl Hamilton got out of Colorado and it was
just like finally, like four I guess, So in that sense,
(11:50):
you know, that's a good sign for the Yankees. There's
there's no real evidence of any kind of hangover from
being of course McMahon like, boy, we're gonna we're gonna
find something out about the Are you Henri Suarez when
we find when he does get traded, and I think
I still think he will. I'm so curious to find
out what that price was because the Yankees should have
(12:11):
probably well at the time.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
It was very they lead. They leaked the offerrez and
it was a major leaguer, an upper miners player, and
a low miners a low miners prospect and upper miners
prospect like that could be anyone that was that was
that was what they bought at. They didn't have name.
They just said they wanted MLB player and upper miners
player and a low minors player.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Not in that mix. Are you crazy all three of
those Clayton Beater, Uh no, Yeah, so so because like this,
you know, I joked about this because like basically the
Yankees got rid of dj let mehew and then just
picked up a new dj let Mehew, somebody that they
will just hate in two years when that contract is
(12:57):
still going because of course, the Yankees are paying for
every single time with the rest of mcmaon's steel, which
is like thirty five million dollars up in the next
two years two plus years.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Which isn't really that much money.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
But also it isn't that much money. But that's also
kind of like dj le Mayhew money, which is just like,
you know, it's fine until you're paying to DJL Mayhew
and McMahon. Right now, basically, DRC actually likes him more
than the other metrics because McMahon has basically kind of
quietly performed a swing change while sucking. He is pulling
(13:31):
the ball in the air way more this year and
just kind of selling out for power a little more,
and the power hasn't actually shown up, but it's like
the power behind it.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Probably nothing is usually not a great.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
The process is good, the process is fine, and DRC
is like, yeah, we like the process. He is like
under hitting his expected slugging by like seventy points or something,
so and then he will probably lose that road penalty
as well. Right he will probably just start hitting better,
like in just sense that you know, half the time
(14:07):
he's not trying to adjust to the fact that pitches
move again, So like, offensively, he's probably a league average
bat and right now he is an above average fielder.
He's not as good as he used to be, you know,
all the metals. Ever, every Yankee.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Fan I saw was like he's a wizard at third
they've been.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Yes, yeah, and that, and that is his stating grace
is that the bar is so low. The problem is
that next year the bar will be him.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Well you said this in the piece, and I think
it's right.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
In like two years, Yankee fans will feel about this
like they feel about DJ Lemage right right, Maybe not
quite as bad, he won't be quite as old, et cetera,
but like.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
He's like also when he's going bad, it's the kind
of hitter that's I guess, taking non competitive at bats
and striking out versus grounding to short is aesthetic choice
on which you hate more.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
But yeah, especially will be a certain fan base that
you know is easy to frustrate. So yeah, he this
this contract will be you know, underwater by the end
of the end of the year. But that's not contracts work.
And you know, this is why you shouldn't trade. You
know why why you shouldn't be traded in the middle
of your contract, because some fan base is going to
only judge you on the back half.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
I also, I will say, like, it's not inconceivable to
me that he's absolutely fine there and the contract isn't
actually underwater, Like I don't think he's going to be
a star, but you know, he's a lefty hitter getting paid.
Cody has been fine, right, Like everyone kind of thought
(15:44):
Cody Bellinger is underwater and he was right, but like
he not not really this year, but fine, And like
I think McMahon between his defense and.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
It's probably gonna keep declining.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
But that's fine, and that's not gonna get better.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
But the bat's not going to get better. I don't think.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
I mean, I think the superficial numbers could be better.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
It's it's very funny to be like, oh, we need
to get this guy out, of course, so his offensive
numbers can go up.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Well, right, I mean that is that's the issue you
run into.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
But like they're I mean, the thing is like if
he posts tam exact line is also like.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Have you before I have? Like you feel different?
Speaker 3 (16:25):
This is the entire argument for trading for leis Robert right.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
Like you're just checked out.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
It's still nice to free somebody. So yeah, I don't
think it's a terrible deal, Like I feel like it's
a letdown to get Have you heard of either guy?
Not Jeffrey?
Speaker 1 (16:42):
Have you heard of either guy they traded. Yeah, so
like I mean, no, it's it's just the mom tell
us about Griffin Harrying and it's like the roast.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
I don't think third seventh best pitching prospects in that system.
He's fine, he's the second best LSU picture they drafted
last year.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Sending too well, is it a picture?
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (17:03):
Two picture pictures. Yeah, like a sweeper heavy guide to chorus. Yeah, well,
you know at least it moves horizontally.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
I guess, yeah, exactly. Actually, sweepers are I think sweepers
are good for course, honestly.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Didn't you did you? Was that in this TA or
somewhere else?
Speaker 2 (17:22):
I wrote that in the annual last year? But right,
but you mentioned it that, Like.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
I I liked that line in this that it was
it was like, you know, course kills movement. So they
focused on getting guys who throw with no movement, who
also then throw with no movement outside of course where
it's you know, also problematic.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Mm hmm. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:47):
Do you have anything else?
Speaker 2 (17:49):
You know? We haven't talking about Omed Rosario?
Speaker 1 (17:51):
Come on, okay, sure, I'm at Rosario was traded for
uh you mentioned brown brown Brown the chat. We're not
that's b R O W M. I don't know if
I'm saying that right. I've never encountered yet Brown with
an M instead of an N at the end. And
(18:11):
there was there was another guy.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
Yes, it was Clon Peter.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Yeah, Clayton Beer Rights. Patrick Patrick mentioned him earlier. So
I actually I think this is a nice move for
New York as far as it goes right, Like it
can only go so far. It's Ahmed Rosaria, but you
you wrote away you had some great lines in this,
I thought Patrick, And like Ahmed Rosario was always about
(18:36):
like what he could be right, like if it all clicked,
like he flashed. You know, he was a multi win
player at times with the Guardians and all this stuff.
But maybe like his value is just in what he is,
which is that he can stand in a bunch of
spots and he can hit lefties.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Yeah, and the pinch it or you don't have to
replace after eight pinch hits.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Right right, and and you know he's also like you
can you can pinch run him like he's he's not
super fast, but he's fast enough. He's an improvement on
a number of guys and then can stay in the
field right like he's.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
Not actually a better defender than Oswald Parazza, but he's Betterazza.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
And again he can like he won't always. He strikes
out a lot, and he just should never face a righting. Yeah,
he can hit to the left if you get the
opportunity to pinch hit him when a lefty has been
brought in and can't be removed. Like, that's a that's
a good move for you, right, And as you said,
(19:36):
he can just he can stand in the field later
and it's not he can play most of the in
field positions. A number of teams have put him in
corner outfield. Probably shouldn't, but they have, and that's fine.
It all you know. Again, this is the type of
depth acquisition I think makes a ton of sense at
(19:57):
a deadline, right, Like, no, he is not a ference maker,
but as you talked about with McMahon, like, it's the
comparison to what they've been getting, right, And so they
improved a starter and they improved the backup to that
starter also in a lot of ways.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
In the article you called it like the whole right,
it was like and it's like so, I mean, look,
we've talked about this a lot in terms of like
San Diego, right, all these guys who provide negative war
and all this stuff, like they should be the easiest
to improve. Ahmed Rosario is an improvement. I'm like the
guys the Yankees have been trying to use in the Orbits.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Yeah exactly, but this is a good podcast.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
We got orbit, we got browned.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
We should know. Like the Yankees are really like a
game up on a playoff spot right now too.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
Yeah, no, they need it, right yeah, I mean like
they are a game up on on Boston. It's it's
they're tied and wins. It's two in the lost column. Yeah, yeah,
they need it, and and good for them for recogniz
even being proactive, right, Like, No, this will not excite anybody,
and it will not like I don't want.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
To over story. Don't worry. Yankees fans are super excited.
Spencer Jones made a Top one hundred list this week,
so they have other things to be excited about that.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
I didn't know there was another Top hundred.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
Of course they went every week, Craig, But yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
Like, no one's gonna be excited about this. But and
like will he win them games? Probably not, but he'll
do less to not use them games.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
I don't know. If I don't know, raydal Grechuk won
a game instantly for the Royals.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
Well, but you know what I mean, right to be there. Well,
and again that's another one where I guess.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
We'll get to but like he's already had a walk
off home.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
You're not John Rave right like that? That is the
win here. Sorry to John Rave.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
For the that. Do we even talk about that?
Speaker 1 (21:51):
Do we care? I mean, sure, the National's gotta whatever.
Clinton Beeter, he can throw hard sometimes.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Uh and Brown?
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Do we we know anything about Brown? He said?
Speaker 3 (22:03):
A very nice season, repeating the DSL as an eighteen
year old.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
I will tell you. I will tell you this about Brown,
which is that when Patrick wrote the section on this,
it was very late on the East Coast and.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
I was hackling. I stuck another one in after you
had finished. Did you when I was seeing that thing
I throw, I threw Brown, man.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
I just it was I laughed the first one, and
it was just also.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
Just to repeat Brown because it's the trade deadline. We're yeah, yeah,
it's only getting worse. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
Uh, that'll do it for our first segment. Let's go
to our second. Uh, thank you for the transition. That
I passed up to to say Brown more often. We
will never be and will never be Royals. I'm sorry
the Royals did trade for Randall. Great check. Uh. The
more relevant news here is they will not be trading
(23:03):
uh Seth Lugo, who I've been trying to trade to
Boston for the last month. At this point, it sounds
like they will reach an extension, a two year extension
for the best option option for forty six dollars covering
the first two years. I don't know that this is
all you know reporting.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
It is not official.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
I guess it can always go sideways. But I want
to get into this because I saw a friend of
the podcast, Zach Kreiser, co author of the Bandwagon newsletter.
He posted yesterday that this is, you know, between trading
for Randall Grichuk and extending Seth Lugo instead of trading
(23:49):
him in a season they're currently three games under five hundred.
I believe there's a whiff of Rockies to this, and
I agreed with that. I looked at the quote posts
on Blue Sky, the quote Skeets or whatever you want
to call him. There was some pushback to this.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
I agree with the pushback.
Speaker 1 (24:07):
Okay, we don't. We agree a lot on this podcast,
so maybe it's good to have a Here's here's what
he used with which I think you can't.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
That's like saying extremely unique, you can't have a whiff
of Rockies.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
I disagree. I think it is.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
I think it is. I think there's a hue of
Rockies behavior to color to taking a trade piece off
the market and extending them in a season in which
it's really looking like you're not gonna make the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
I a while, but yes, well you're not.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
I mean, yes, they are closer to the playoffs if
that's the game you want to play here obviously, And
I don't think it is distinctly Rockies. I'm not. It
is not that you know they are. We have them
at nine and a half percent.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Ye, which is very funny because it's under both Cleveland
and Minnesota.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Well like, well, this is what makes it a little
bit Rockies? Yes, because people are You're saying like, it
can't be a little bit pregnant, it can't be a
little bit Rockies. I hear where you're coming from, But
I think the circumstances, I think there's there's a little bit.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
Of overlap there, they're gonna have to I.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
Guess Lugo is better than anything.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
We're gonna have to replace Seth Lugo for next year.
They obviously have designs on contention such as it is,
because they probably should because the al isn't very good
and they have Bobby whit Junior. Yes, so they replaced
Seth Lugo with Seth Lugo.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
Right, these are the different Right, these are the differences,
and they're valid. Right, I'm not I'm not trying to
say it's it's.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
The lay Seth Lugo with cal Quantrell.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Yeah, he wanted to be there, and yeah, I think
it's nice.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Yeah, that's I was really surprised, like because he obviously
has the player option, he'd be one of the best.
He's older, but he's one of the best pictures available
on the market as a free agent. And but then
it was like two years forty six million. I'm like, okay,
that's why. Yeah, I mean they paid him. I don't
even think it's like overpay necessarily he's older, but he's
not a ton of miles on that arm because he
(26:21):
was a reliever for so many years. Like, yeah, is
they haven't like fully, it's.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
Just the right.
Speaker 1 (26:33):
Yeah, I mean I think you could also put this,
and again I think it's unfair to do so, but
I think you could also put this in terms that
make it seem worse for the Royals, right, Like, yes,
Luco has been one of these, but extending a pending
free agent. Look, I mean arguably you could you could
go try and bring him back.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
Yeah, it never happens after treating it, it has, But
Henderson's like, I'm trying to think of one sense, Henderson,
where the As trade into the Blue Jays and then
just brought him back, Like, oh, do you enjoy your
little vacation?
Speaker 1 (27:09):
Yeah, well, it usually happens, I think with guys like
more on the Ahmed Rosario right than it does with
like someone as good as Lugo. But you could say, like, also,
he's a thirty six year old pitcher, right, Like, arguably
they've extracted more than they ever could have hoped for
(27:30):
on the original contract they've given they gave him, right, Like, yeah,
they got to the playoffs last year behind him. He
was he was on the cy.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Young ballot, right.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
I don't have his his b RIF page open in
front of me, But like he was that good. He
was good enough to be yeah, uh he was. He
was very good again this year. They they you want
like you won. Yeah, And this is the again unfavorable
perspective here. I'm not saying I feel this way, but
there you could look at this and say, like this
(28:01):
is going back for more Seth Lugo at two twelve
in the morning, right, like you should not be.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
But you kind of want more teams in this general
I act like this.
Speaker 5 (28:12):
Yet, but yes, but I know it's that the Royal
challenge of baseball in this in this era is finding
the next one, right, and.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
Not in the Royal case, finding an outfielder.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Yeah, which they keep trying to do. Then I think
I think this is.
Speaker 6 (28:31):
This is what they did with with with South correct
parents too, right, like the I both admire it and
also it's sometimes why the Royals are where they are.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
They're in a spy right now where they have to
solve their problems with money and they don't have a
lot of it because of the Royals. So I don't
really have a problem with this, Like they're already they've
already fired on Noah Cameron. They have no pitching behind
it internally.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
Chris Bubich has a rotator cuss rain. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
Yeah, so for a month, by the way, it's just
been feeling it for a month.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
It's possible. Everybody. No, no, that wasn't a question.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
That was he said that everyone's pitching with a bit
of something.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Sure, like.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
You might not want to push Chris Bubach, Sure, right,
your your major pitching conversion from relief victory, Like, I
don't know.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
The thing the thing is like with the Royals is
that in order to be successful, you got to do both.
You've got to both extend your lugos and also develop
new lugos at the same time so that you have
double lugos so that you can actually be tell enough
to win. And if you don't, if you don't extend
your lugos, you're you're the Guardians, which is essentially what
the Royals are right now because they have Okay, if
(29:54):
you only sign people and don't develop anyone, you.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
Look, I'm gonna pay. I'm gonna play devil advocate on
this because I I don't like the Guardians operation right,
like it is successful, I'm not.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
I'm not, but I don't like it right and I'm not.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
But the Guardians are successful and the Royals and generally
have not been.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
And the Giants are successful in the same at the
same scale, I would say, as a five hundred ish team.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
Like, but the Giants don't play in the in the central, right,
but the Royals do.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
Though. That's that's the difference here, right, Both those teams
are like halfway to being the great team. The other hand,
you know, twins.
Speaker 3 (30:40):
You can do the central if you are right.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
You couldn't. Like, you're just gonna have to. I think
if you're the Royals, you have to at least pretend
like you can pull it off, right, Like.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
I admire the building strategy, but I love I liked
I think, I said repeatedly when they signed him a
season and a half ago, I liked it. I thought
that was a good fit for them, and and it was.
But there does come a time when again, this is
(31:11):
a thirty six year old right hander that yes he's
he was a reliever earlier in his career, so maybe
there's more, you know, mileage on his arm to go
than than most others. But but there you you do
reach an inflection point and maybe they're right, maybe that's
not yet right.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
I'm not saying I think you have to when you're
the Royals and you're not going to sign do and
see this offseason, you have to take that, right, you
have to, right.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Yeah, no, and that's valid. But at the same time,
and look, this is this is the problem the front
office has in Kansas City and several other places as
we're talking about, is how to balance it because when
you have Seth Lugo and no one is training anyone
at the deadline, don't you also kind of have to
cash in on.
Speaker 3 (31:52):
That Are you getting Are you getting that much? First?
Speaker 1 (31:56):
I don't know, Well that's the question. I don't know.
I don't know the answer to that, and they do.
They probably do, right, So maybe we should give them
the benefit of the town. And and that's fair.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
Obviously there are injury concerns here now, but like they're
going to go in next year with the rotation of
Seth Lugo hypothetically Seth Lugo Michael Waka camera. Yeah, it's
a good like in the Ale Central, like they find
an outfielder three, but like like.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
Guardians exactly that with no outfield.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
And worst pitching worse.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
Well, they've I mean, they had good rotations for a while,
and they have Jose Ramirez in Body Wet right, Like
you can make the parallel there. Yeah, No, I think
that's fine. Again, I think the counter argument is like,
as a pending free agent like you, you could potentially
go get Seth Lugo again if he wants to be
(32:52):
there again, like who knows? I look, I I agree,
it's a.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
Week the market, Like, I don't know. I think he
would have beaten pre guaranteed. Yeah, but like buy enough,
you don't want to go back to the Royal Son, right, No, No,
I agree, maybe san Diego comes back in at three
sixty and you picked.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
I'm copying to the fact that it's a weak argument,
and I agree it doesn't happen, But I think you
can you can make you can make that they're in
a tough spot, right, I think you can make that
argument either way. And I think it's fair to say,
like they have information we don't, and maybe that lends
credence to the value. The flip side of that is
they haven't done great in trades lately, so like what
(33:40):
they value right, Like if it's like, oh, they weren't
meeting our standards, well, like are you're are you targeting
the right guys. Could you have gotten what we would
consider a good deal? I don't know.
Speaker 3 (33:48):
I mean they've also done mostly by trades recently.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
As funny as that is, that is fair, But they
also buy Adam Fraser, so like, yes, again, it's it's
hard to speaking of which uh I mentioned it, but
they traded for Randall Gridchuk Uh. Yes again, apologies to genre.
If it's an improvement, it's an improvement. The problem with
(34:11):
the Royals is that it keeps being an improvement. They
keeping another good good a line I really liked in.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
They keep adding Markannis, and they keep needing Marcanis because
those Marcanas stopped being Marcanis, and like you like, at
some point.
Speaker 1 (34:25):
More Adam Fraser continues to.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Be and he's just like, at some point, maybe it's
not working, because it's been like seven of these dudes
now and they just seem to get worse every time
they show up.
Speaker 1 (34:36):
They've got your in house, but the logic is still it's.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
Not Yeah, yeah, it was, you know. And of course
he you know, after after write you know, writing about
it about it like that evening, he goes ahead and
hits a you know, walk off, you know, great.
Speaker 1 (34:52):
Uh he can he can like kind of do yeah,
you know again it's the am ed Arsario like let
him so.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
So basically for a recap for anybody who has not
been paying attention to Renal gree check lately, which you
know might be it might be happy. He basically had
a career layer last year. The Diamondbacks waited till February
and said, oh, well, actually you fit just as well
on our roster with Paved Smith as you did with
John Peterson, so we'll bring it back. And he has
gone back to being exactly what usually is, which is, hey,
(35:21):
a Royal skuy, a league average header with no defensive
bill skill. He again will probably be slightly better than
that going forward, but probably not enough to be worth
that much, but enough to be worth more than John Ray.
So yeah, yeah, not exciting, not even really like like that,
you know, I framed the ta today, but kind of
(35:42):
depressing trades, and this is kind of a depressing trade
for the Royals, Like it's not it is helping, but
the problem is that it shows how much it helps.
Speaker 1 (35:51):
Yeah, I mean I don't know that is I should
look this up, but I assume Jack Kaglione is on
the roster, still is on the because I mean, look,
I applaud them again for trying. I I again I
(36:12):
appreciate the Royals like approach of late. They tried to
improve the outfield one two, five, two eighty yep, minus
one point to our war in in forty one games.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
Again as Patrick mentioned the whole right, yeah, like you've
got to improve on it, and like does it feel
good that Randall gridetruck is an improvement on that?
Speaker 2 (36:42):
No?
Speaker 1 (36:43):
But he he he absolutely is. All right, let's go
to our third segment. Got a piece that needs completion. Jeffrey,
inform me on what this is.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
It's from the car seat headress so on deadlines.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
Okay, oh, per yeah, well done, well done. Uh we
are starting to get some movement on the deadline. I
do like I know it was more Lugo Lugo related,
but I like that we have a Royals segment featuring
Randall Grychak and like the Mariners traded for Josh Naylor,
which is absolutely a bigger move than this.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
It longer it is, It was longer.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
It was long also, like we wouldn't we would? You know,
the Lugo thing is bigger. I think than Naylor, right, like.
Speaker 3 (37:29):
Josh Naylor's I guess it's much.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
I mean, he's definitely better than Naylor. But it doesn't
change I guess in.
Speaker 2 (37:39):
A sense, unless you had already written mentally decided they'd
trade him and now have to readjust yourself, then then
it's like a non trade that you.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
And I guess, I mean I certainly had, so that's fair.
Uh So the Mariners pick up speaking of their their own,
their own hole at first base, they have picked up Naylor.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
Uh. They traded two of the most gen z ass
names I've ever seen in my life.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
I think Tim Jackson, our own Tim Jackson said they
traded two of Jeff Hoffman's kids. Yeah, Brandon with a Y.
I'm not going to tell you where that landed. Uh
in the name Garcia and Ashton somehow know whise I
believe in Ashton?
Speaker 3 (38:24):
Isy No, no, why somehow it's shocking.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
Uh. Yeah, I don't think we need to start with
the prospects. But I don't. I mean, like it doesn't.
I saw those I saw those names. I don't know
if they were on our Mariners list.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
Is like a fairly notable relatively fairly is too strong
relatively notable prospecting that system, but also perfectly fine for
a Josh Naylor rental.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (38:56):
So again, the Mariners had been running out Luke Ray
and I don't know Patrick who else?
Speaker 2 (39:02):
You know.
Speaker 1 (39:03):
I saw people looking longingly at Tyler Locklear again, you.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
Know a lot of dominic Canzone and the monitors as
the kids say, he's had a nice he's been fine. Yeah,
he's been fine. I don't know he played. I didn't
know he played first. Oh no, not first, Sorry, Oh
you're just talking about the the lineup. Yeah, yeah, who
has been playing first? Let's see Donovan Solana. Actually that's
(39:26):
not what you no. Solano actually like if you look
at Savanna Solano after April, like he basically had the
Tommy Lostella start, except he like didn't just immediately retire
and disappear. Let's see, since May first, Solano is batting
two eighty six, three, forty five four ten.
Speaker 1 (39:44):
So fine, Yeah, you much rather him in a depth
role than your regular first.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
Base, right, but he is fine.
Speaker 1 (39:52):
So now they get to the plug and nailer. Who's
not a bad fit for this park. I think it
kind of cuts both ways. He doesn't have like monster
power to just get through the marine layer. I mean,
he can get into one, but he hits the power
allies fairly well and it's a big outfield.
Speaker 3 (40:12):
And fine, he's just a good hitter.
Speaker 1 (40:13):
It's like not, yeah, it's hit over power, right generally speaking, Sure,
he's got an eight hundred ops in Arizona. It's a
one oh four d r C plus so there's a
little disagreement there, but again, a massive improvement in terms
of both what the lineup is regularly getting and also
(40:34):
just allowing them to use Solano in other ways and
and kind of cover up lineupoles that way.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
Uh, Solano can't play third, so you know, any day
that that means Ben Williamson doesn't hit is probably a
good day. Yeah, you don't want him to play.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
Uh, Seattle has uh I mean that Pakoda still has
the I mean less than in game behind Houston at
this point in terms of the projected.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
State, they were very optimistic playoff odds.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
Obviously they're they're in a spot now so that that
is helpful, but they are well they're tied I guess
with the Rangers, so that is I mean, I I
think this is a substantial improvement.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
Need to make another one.
Speaker 2 (41:25):
But yeah, sure.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
In Seattle, it's never one move away, right like, but
this is one of those moves. And it doesn't sound like.
Look at this might be a nice bit of business
for Arizona in the sense that I mean dead look,
deadline for rental First Basement are not returning a ton,
(41:51):
so like it might be a nice little you know,
in the context of it. But I don't know that.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
The Mariners are are going to really regret that.
Speaker 1 (41:58):
And this does you know, Look, they're in a spot
where they should be pushing, and and this is do
we think a better bat is getting dealt this deadline?
Well swas well, I mean bat alone. Maybe maybe not,
but sure.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
I mean. The funny thing now about there's one.
Speaker 3 (42:19):
We have some breaking news we should probably talk about.
Oh it's deadline related. Emmanuel Class has been placed on
non disciplinary paid lead it as part of ALB sports
betting INVESTIGATIONESPN.
Speaker 4 (42:31):
Oh oh all right, well, uh yeah, I don't want to.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
Put in around the horn or do you just want
to talk about it?
Speaker 3 (42:46):
Maybe maybe we don't give us it.
Speaker 1 (42:50):
Was fifteen minutes to talk about other stuff and maybe
something else will come up.
Speaker 2 (42:56):
Now. The funny thing about the Mariners and third base
is that like with mc man gone, Like everyone was like, oh,
it's very very funny if the mayor is traded for McMahon. Uh.
The only thing funnier than the mayor's training for mcpannter
is the mariage training for any of the other third basemen,
all of whom were former Mariners. It seemed like because
now you're looking at maybe it being Suarez who they
just decided Jennison, you know, you're looking at Luisa Rias,
(43:18):
you know, like there's like they need a third basement still.
And the other funny thing is that yesterday or let's see, Son,
it would have been by the time you're listening this,
it would have been on Saturday, Saturday night, the Mariners
hit you on Mancata in the hand and it looked
like it might have been broken, and it was like negative, Yeah,
(43:40):
ex raz Nigge had been at the moment, it was like, oh,
the marriage just just broke their own future third base. Yeah,
because after that, there's you know, not a lot out there.
I don't know Cabrian Hayes is a Mariner. I think
Cabrian Hayes as a Mariner looks that that feels galaxy
(44:02):
brain in all the right and wrong ways. And I
could see, like I could see the Mariners saying, like, yeah,
five years on Brian Hayes, we can do it, we can.
We are the ones who can thix of He's.
Speaker 3 (44:14):
Like the he's like the inverse of rym mcman and
you can hit the same exact thing no matter where
he is relative to the park.
Speaker 2 (44:23):
Yeah, this is Yeah.
Speaker 1 (44:26):
I struggle to see them taking on the financial commitment
even though it's not no, I know.
Speaker 3 (44:34):
But also like what it's like two Dylan more extensions.
It's not that much.
Speaker 1 (44:38):
Aren't they trying?
Speaker 2 (44:44):
Yeah, I'm really struggling to figure out who what Dylan
Moore's trade market is? Just who who wants.
Speaker 3 (44:53):
That fastros need an infielder? Apparently sure got.
Speaker 1 (44:57):
Anything more on Nailor. I thought the this was a
nice move.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
Yeah, it was a good one. It's a good move.
Speaker 1 (45:03):
Gregory Soto was traded to the Mets. They're just collecting
sodos from from Al East teams. I guess this year
I left in our group chat you just have to watch,
and Jeff fairly said I lived through Jake Deakman, I
can live through this. But every single time I didn't
see it, but every single time I do see Gregory Soto,
(45:26):
he throws minimum one pitch to the backstop.
Speaker 3 (45:30):
I don't think it got to the backstop, but there
was one that would like Alvarez had to make like
an athletic place. Yes.
Speaker 2 (45:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (45:39):
Uh, he's one of those guys where it's just like,
don't watch, just don't watch it and get the update
later and it'll be you know, they've got on balance
over the course of a season. You're fine, but it
is excruciating.
Speaker 3 (45:54):
They got Brooks Raley back obviously, and he's looked quite good.
So getting Soto is a second line that if he
fixes some stuff, can pitch and some leopard situations for
you is a nice little bit of business.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (46:07):
Absolutely, And they gave up two future relievers for it,
one of a low way.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
So right, Yeah, it's it's a nice go for it.
Speaker 7 (46:14):
Move yep, sure, why not?
Speaker 1 (46:17):
Uh your rumors seem to be slow into a track,
trying to move, but there's yeah, there is some movement,
but there's there's nothing. But I mean, this is the
point like when a Honey Suarez is headlining.
Speaker 3 (46:31):
Yeah, we're getting closer to the deadline, but also moving
out farther apart from actual.
Speaker 2 (46:36):
Mean, well, it seems like thirty three teams are Louis interested,
Luis Robert. Yeah, and the White Sox are not one
of them. They're no longer interested losing.
Speaker 3 (46:44):
The Guardians might trade Stephen Kwan. They are apparently not
going to trade Emmanuel Class because he's on.
Speaker 1 (46:49):
Yeah, I don't, I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (46:51):
There's more Flary paid leave until August thirty first, So.
Speaker 2 (46:57):
Yeah, the Astros, like.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
The Astros one and in fielder, they're like called the
Mats about one of the mets for extra enfielders at
this point.
Speaker 2 (47:08):
I mean they are already they're already using that in the
sense that he's hurt. But Luis Ki or me, you know,
he's around.
Speaker 3 (47:14):
Has not hitting as well, so.
Speaker 1 (47:18):
Uh, you know, they've still got Taylor Trammel starting every
day and said good, he's been good, very good.
Speaker 2 (47:23):
I'm sure it'll keep up.
Speaker 3 (47:24):
I'm sure. Yeah, Cooper hum don't look at the k
rate and babet. It's fine.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
Cooper Hummel's got ninety seven plate appearances for this team
this year.
Speaker 3 (47:31):
That's a lot.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
It's it's too many.
Speaker 3 (47:33):
When we're fine it's too many for July. Maybe for
a whole season, it's fine, but.
Speaker 2 (47:40):
Uh he needs so he needs one more the he
had he said ninety eight. This year he had two
hundred and one with the airs on it with the
Diamax's rookie. He was a twenty seven year old rookie,
like he was. He really was Mitch Garver or Mitch
Haniger plus like when the marriage trade for him, like
they're like, well, if a twenty six year old Mitch
Haniger can turn to be good, then maybe a twenty
(48:01):
eight year old Cooper Hummel.
Speaker 1 (48:03):
Was it was he? I mean, he was a rookie,
but was he Wasn't he also one of those guys
that like had come up three times before but just
never Explorean player status.
Speaker 2 (48:13):
Yeah, no, that he was just his.
Speaker 1 (48:15):
First game, his first season. Was We've been hearing about
Cooper Hummel for.
Speaker 3 (48:21):
Like a lot of smart teams, like the Brewers, obviously
the Mets.
Speaker 2 (48:26):
Like I think.
Speaker 3 (48:29):
It was maybe it was when Appler took over, not
when Starns took over.
Speaker 2 (48:32):
Yeah it was.
Speaker 1 (48:32):
It was during the trend of catchers who also played
the outfield.
Speaker 3 (48:35):
Yeah, he's like a trendy guy. To like add to
your forty then also DFA, which the Mets.
Speaker 2 (48:42):
The Blake disable era.
Speaker 1 (48:43):
Yeah, I guess uh, As Jeff mentioned the Astros are
interested in an infielder, Sure, fine, I don't.
Speaker 2 (48:50):
I don't have anything.
Speaker 1 (48:52):
Uh, the Cubs have interest in Mackenzie This would be
a I'm gonna say our own match true blood. But
in his capacity for the Cubs site that he runs
north Side Baseball and he noted that like they from
his sources, they were interested in what three arms, right,
(49:12):
it was Edward Cabrera, Keller.
Speaker 2 (49:17):
What's up?
Speaker 1 (49:19):
Mitch Keller, and and Mackenzie Gore. Keller was at the
bottom of the list in terms of interest, but also
probably the most acquireable. It was just interesting they did
not like he noted they did not want to pay
the price on Mackenzie Gore or whatever. But I'm also
a little confused because last I saw the Nationals said like,
we're not interested in trading him. So I guess he said, what,
(49:42):
They're willing to trade own Casey, but they're not willing
to trade Jackson Wiggins, which is I guess again, I don't.
I'm not sure the guy is actually available, so I
don't know that it really matters, but like I'm sure
they are willing to trade own Casey. They have a very.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
Full outfield, yes, Casey for two years, right.
Speaker 1 (50:07):
And then it's like okay, so but like I guess
the thing that rankled me here was like there are
no impact starting pitchers on the market right now, So
like if Mackenzie Gore was available, you're telling me the
guy you haven't called up for two years and is
in competition with other outfield prospects for the no playing
time that you have available for them loss Jackson Wiggins,
(50:30):
who is good. I'm not This isn't shade at Jackson Wiggins.
Speaker 3 (50:33):
For two and a half years and for two and
a half.
Speaker 1 (50:35):
Years of Mackenzie Gore, Like you're not willing to consider
that in a year that like you are getting pushed
by Milwaukee, but like should by all intents and purposes
win this.
Speaker 3 (50:47):
Division and badly need another top of the rotation starter.
Speaker 1 (50:51):
That's wild to me, Like maybe I'm just disrespecting Wiggins,
but in my view of this, but like I'm saying,
I'm I'm like to face.
Speaker 3 (51:00):
Everybody, like if you're that interested in Mackenzie Gore, you
obviously view what mackenzie Gore is doing this year somewhat sustainable. Right,
So at that point, like, yeah, I mean, I get
not I get being a little Look, the Nats are
gonna want you to pay for two and a half
years of McKenzie Gore as a top of the rotation starter.
(51:24):
If you don't believe that because of the underlying stuff
or the lack of track record, you don't have to
be swimming in that in those waters. But if those
are one of the pictures you want, that's the price
you're gonna pay. Like this isn't like well.
Speaker 1 (51:36):
And also like I have been very doubtful on Gore's
ability to sustain the type of starts he gets off to,
and he's he's reliably faded even.
Speaker 3 (51:46):
Even the last month. He hasn't struck out a ton
of guys, right like the k Raid.
Speaker 1 (51:49):
But even a faded Mackenzie Gore offers more upside.
Speaker 3 (51:53):
Than Jamis and Tyon.
Speaker 1 (51:54):
Yeah, I mean, and again keep talking about Mitch Keller
and it's like that it's more middle of the rotation.
I know that there's probably something to unlock for Mitch Keller,
but like that was the Jamison Tyon argument.
Speaker 3 (52:08):
Right, there's some downside where he might just be Jamison
Tyon for you next year too, Like he's he's another
guy that's faded down the stretch where he's been a
three three three five ra guy for the first twenty
starts and then all of a sudden wilts down the
stretch for whatever reason.
Speaker 2 (52:24):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (52:25):
It could just be random variation, but right, he also
nothing in his underlying whatever, Like he doesn't have a
single pitch getting a whit right over thirty percent this year,
and that's Keller not Gore. Do you want to try
contacts the pressure in Wrigley Field? Like the thing you
can try?
Speaker 1 (52:42):
Like yeah, and it's just I mean, like again, if
you want to think about the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (52:48):
Yeah, like Mackenzie Gore is your Game two starter problem
is your Game three at worse?
Speaker 2 (52:54):
Right?
Speaker 3 (52:55):
And yeah, I guess Matt Boyd is Legitimately.
Speaker 1 (53:01):
I don't know what to make of the Cubs pitching development.
They do some things pretty good. Obviously haven't gotten the
most out of what they might have expected from Tyne
or whatever. But like, if you're viewing it that way
in terms of Keller, like arguably you could unlock some
stuff with Mackenzie Gore, Right, like the Nationals pitching dev
I know it's been better lately, but like not, you know,
(53:25):
not the number one pitching dev or in the league. Right,
So I think you could apply that same kind of
loss to any potential acquisition. I don't get Again, this
is all reporting stuff. Maybe they feel differently, I don't know,
but it just it kind of struck me as like
if I don't know that the Nationals are trading Mackenzie
(53:46):
Gore for Owen Casey and Jackson Wiggins.
Speaker 3 (53:49):
That's the other part of it, right, Yeah, to be clear,
it's very odd to me to.
Speaker 1 (53:53):
Leak a we're not interested in trading Wiggins.
Speaker 3 (53:58):
Vibes like Last Deadline where they're like, we're not traded
Jason Divenga's for anything less than a superstar, and like
there just weren't any superstars getting traded. So it's easy
to say that, like, yeah, to necessarily about your view
about Jason Divenos.
Speaker 2 (54:11):
It's a real I have two coins in the added
to thirty cents and one of them is not a nickel. Yeah,
technically true.
Speaker 1 (54:23):
So we have here, or we're making a prediction on
the best player moved at the deadline.
Speaker 2 (54:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (54:28):
I don't know why I put that in there, but
I did.
Speaker 1 (54:31):
We can bag it if you want. How much?
Speaker 3 (54:33):
Fine, I'm gonna say, Mackenzie Gore.
Speaker 1 (54:35):
Really you think they're gonna do it?
Speaker 3 (54:38):
I mean, I gotta like it's boring to pick a
you Hennio Suarez, which is probably the actual answer here.
So yeah, I mean it's not going to be Emmanuel Class,
who I guess would have had a Yeah.
Speaker 1 (54:52):
Well, so I was thinking of doing Stephen Kwan in
wake of the news, and look, there was there was
a comment on, uh, Jenny did a deadline dreaming for
the Dodgers for US today, and there was a comment
on like how Kwan is like the type of guy
Cleveland should not trade, and that is right. They shouldn't
be trading him, right, but this is there. We talked
(55:13):
about Kansas City already, but like this is their process.
He's going to get more expensive in arbitration. They don't
have a long term deal in place. Any long term
deal would take him into his thirties, which they're not
necessarily gonna want to be buying into. That's not how
Cleveland operates, right, And they can get a lot for
(55:35):
him right now. I don't know exactly what the deal
would be, but I think that he had a major haul.
And I mentioned this before. I think the Dodgers are
a really good fit for them in terms of high
octane arms that they could you know, they could do
(55:57):
their their Guardians thing with. I know that's faded a
little little bit in the last year or two, or
honestly just outfield prospects, right, I mean the Dodgers have
how many four of them made the top fifty. Yeah,
So I mean there are a number of ways to
go if in that and there Look, I mean any
organization out there should be interested in steam quant and
(56:19):
so like that. That's and that, but that's part of
the appeal, right, that's so I in wake of this,
in wake of not having I mean, their bullpen was
already kind of struggling, right, like Kate Smith. Look, they
were soft or you know soft listening on on Smith
and Clause already. Uh so yeah, I'm gonna you know,
(56:44):
maybe it's just reactionary, but I'm gonna go with with.
Speaker 2 (56:46):
One, my my, you know, it's Suerez is so clearly
like in terms if you're looking at reference for like,
you know, the only the only people really that even
have been rumored that really sweet Swires are like Joe
Ryan right that, you know, Mackenzie Gore, I think, But I.
Speaker 3 (57:01):
Mean, I would argue that O'Neil Cruz is having a
worse season and as a better player.
Speaker 2 (57:05):
But yeah, sure, I don't think. I don't think they'll
trade the cruise, so I'm gonna go ahead and do
Edward Cabrera. Yeah, I think he'll get traded, and I think,
you know, he's not like he's I think he has
the most chance to make an impact, especially compared to
what else is on the market in his position. If
(57:25):
you need a pitcher, that might be it, other than Keller.
I just think, you know, Cabrera, Cabrera is somebody who
could by the end of the season be Yere number
two in the playoff rotation.
Speaker 1 (57:38):
So yeah, I mean he's always had the upside, Like
if you can get him, this is very like if
you could just trade him to the Rays and have
him stop walking guys, right, like if they do their
thing where they he doesn't walk guys anymore, Like that's
how you get your number two start. I don't know
who I you know, whatever, but I'm not predicting that
to be clear, but that's like the kind of adjustment
(58:00):
we're talking about. On that note, let's take a break
and we'll be back with Around the.
Speaker 7 (58:05):
Horn and I guess some breaking news.
Speaker 1 (58:26):
Welcome back to episode four hundred and seventy eight of
five and Dive. We are going Around the Horn. I'm
going to move it to the top of the list
since we interrupted the podcast on it.
Speaker 2 (58:37):
Emmanuel clause as noted is suspended.
Speaker 1 (58:40):
I wanted to add, via Chelsea James of the Washington Post,
the Guardians say we have been informed that no additional
players or club personnel are expected to be impacted. The
Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time cause,
I mean the natural thought is like, how.
Speaker 2 (58:59):
Deep does this run?
Speaker 3 (59:00):
Right? Well, no other guardians, I guess they didn't say
no other guardians are implicated further in during the least
Artiz thing.
Speaker 1 (59:07):
Yeah, exactly right, only necessarily come out with with one guy.
I don't know that you come out and feel like you.
Speaker 3 (59:16):
Have to say that, right, sure, I mean you, I
guess you do. Now wonder like, is it's getting talked
about in the bullpen or something like did he see Ortiz?
Got away with it, or looked like he got away
with it for a month and decided to do it himself.
I don't know. We don't even know what the content.
Speaker 1 (59:35):
In the brief in the brief time that this is broken,
I've been mullying, like, what is the most insane like
pro labor take we could.
Speaker 2 (59:43):
Get out of this?
Speaker 1 (59:44):
And I and I think it's I think it's that. Uh,
this is this is why, Uh, the long term extension
early early career long term extensions are bad because it's
not it's something, it's not enough money, and.
Speaker 2 (59:59):
It's yeah, you gotta you've got to give the people
read right, I.
Speaker 1 (01:00:05):
Want to be clear, I don't I'm not representing that
point of view.
Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
I'm not Emmanuel and Classe. What you know?
Speaker 1 (01:00:13):
Yeah, uh yeah, I don't. I don't know what to say.
I don't know what to say about Louis Ortiz. It's
obviously bad. Yeah, uh, it's it seems it feels considerably
worse to have two pitchers on the same team come
down with this.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:00:34):
I'm sure that we will hear.
Speaker 3 (01:00:37):
I'm sure. Like the where cheese situation leaked fairly quickly
after the initial announcement, so right, but.
Speaker 1 (01:00:49):
I'm sure we will hear like the sport is is
you know, this is threatens the.
Speaker 3 (01:00:54):
And yeah, I mean they just keep playing the games,
don't they. And people keep the emblem on them, they
keep it ounce in the same game Parlay is sponsored
by FanDuel on the broadcast, so they do.
Speaker 1 (01:01:03):
And and so I want to say, like I'm sympathetic
to like I do. I do think it in in
a theoretical sense, does threaten to undermine the sport as
a whole. But I think Patrick mentioned this last time.
I apologize if it wasn't you, but I mean, Jeff,
you actually you obviously watch a lot of European soccer
and British soccer, and like there have been a number
(01:01:25):
of men yeah to scandal.
Speaker 3 (01:01:28):
Ivan Tony was suspended for better part of a year
and I was back playing with the English national team, right.
Speaker 1 (01:01:33):
And it doesn't I mean like things that I don't
want to and I'm not that's not like a laudatory.
Speaker 2 (01:01:39):
I don't want to.
Speaker 3 (01:01:40):
I don't want to downplay like, oh, gambling is different
in England because it really isn't. It's the same thing,
but it is sort of more culturally acceptable, right, Like
there are betting windows, you know, right near the stadiums,
if not in the stadium grounds themselves. Like you can
like putting a know, I'm in like group chats with
(01:02:01):
soccer fans and stuff, like it's common to put down,
you know, a ten pound accumulator on the weekend for
like four or five matches for fun or whatever. Right,
you know, it's essentially a parlay. But you know there's
just plenty of teams who shirt sponsor is a because
you know Wednesdays this year is mister Vegas.
Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
So oh yeah, I mean like what bet three sixty
five is ever? I mean like Ladbrokes sponsored everything for
a while.
Speaker 3 (01:02:32):
Shirt sponsor last year, end this year. Yeah, it's been
around for a bit.
Speaker 1 (01:02:37):
And again I don't to your point, like, I don't
want to downplay the negative externalities.
Speaker 2 (01:02:43):
They're there.
Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
They're massive, and I'm not trying. And then again, it
is not a laudatory like it's just going to keep going,
but like and it might be depressing, and that's fair
that it just keeps going, but it's not going to
bring that sport like and again they find that you
can find that exceptionally grim and and I'm with you,
(01:03:04):
but it won't.
Speaker 3 (01:03:05):
Like I literally, even if Otani had been doing what
we initially thought he was doing, it would not have
brought down the sport.
Speaker 7 (01:03:10):
And I don't think.
Speaker 1 (01:03:13):
No, I yeah, I don't think anything would bring down
the sport. It would be that that might be insanely
damage and just on timing, right, like just coming off
the team switch and all of that kind of sir stuff.
But yeah, it's it's yeah else elsewhere.
Speaker 2 (01:03:33):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:03:33):
We had the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (01:03:37):
Inductions that was gonna be the first topic, and around.
Speaker 2 (01:03:39):
Them it was I mean, what do you want me
to do on a transition there somebody who won't be
They didn't.
Speaker 3 (01:03:47):
They didn't this year, So yeah, now that intelligible Again,
it seemed like it was nice of or sorry.
Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
Was nice? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:03:58):
Did is like Friars Club.
Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
The fan's good at it, like he is good he
is a Hall of Fame speech giver. Yep, yeah, these things.
I'm you know. Cooperstown is on the other side of
the world for me. It feels like on the other
side of the world for me as far as like
how I interact with baseball, but.
Speaker 1 (01:04:24):
Like the the weekend itself, it feels like something for
other people. I just kind of hear.
Speaker 2 (01:04:29):
It very much feels like when baseball was just like
something that you saw in the newspaper the next morning,
Like this is these speeches, Like it feels very much
like next day. Oh yeah, that's nice there in we
talked about him when they got voted in. They all
had a nice they all had a nice weekend. You know.
You know I also like beyond detro, I don't really
(01:04:52):
have any strong feelings. I mean, I'm very glad that
tick Alan got in. Yeah, this is not the weekend
to celebrate that, because he's not there, and it sucks
that he wasn't there. But Ce Sabathia, Billy's sure, Billy Wagner, sure,
I don't care. Dave Parker, hie, Yeah, no, there's nothing.
There are no Jim Cutts or you know, Harold Bains.
(01:05:13):
Is this year to really get up.
Speaker 3 (01:05:17):
I'm just at the point where it's like, yeah, it's
nice for all of them. It's sad. Dave Parker too, Yeah,
I read a very nice poem that.
Speaker 1 (01:05:28):
His father also his son looks exactly like you know,
Parker at least got the call, right, yah, he knew. Yeah,
Well we'll do.
Speaker 3 (01:05:39):
It all again in whatever October when the.
Speaker 2 (01:05:43):
Next I guess part of his knowing that Pete Rose.
Speaker 3 (01:05:46):
Well it's good, it's a while, it's a while, right, yeah,
or something like that because when his turn comes in,
which I'm sure was part of the reason they did it.
Now it's also like batcan down the road.
Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
Ye, next year, we.
Speaker 3 (01:06:05):
Say, who knows how many gambling scandals they'll have between
then and when now and when Pete Rose comes up on.
Speaker 1 (01:06:10):
The ballance, Well we'll have. We'll have Beltron and Andrew
Jones in the next one. We can we can have
that chat instead. M Well, on that uplifting note, the
Braves have acquired Eric Fetti.
Speaker 3 (01:06:26):
I said on Thursday some team was going to need
somebody fill innings the rest of the year. Grant Holmes
is on the I L So it's Braves.
Speaker 1 (01:06:33):
Real quick, Yeah, that the Braves are just having an
all time Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:06:39):
Sometimes you have a year like this, right, yeah, yeah, exactly. Now,
I don't know next year is going to look like,
but yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
I mean there are something I don't know, Like Michael
Harris has at least looked alive the last week.
Speaker 3 (01:06:54):
Have you want to like sales thing was kind of freaky, right,
strive to be further off the second Tommy john On.
Speaker 1 (01:07:01):
Yeah, and he's not been bad.
Speaker 2 (01:07:03):
Buck will be back, and injury is not the kind
that should have any lingering issues once he's healthy, you know,
it's not j R.
Speaker 3 (01:07:09):
Richie might be ready by see. Like the bigger issue
is the batch, right, Like what are you getting from
Albis and Olson? And yeah, those guys you're after a
place as in as production? Not well, there's not much
much right now.
Speaker 2 (01:07:23):
But yeah, no, but you.
Speaker 1 (01:07:25):
Also, I mean, well, I I assume they're just gonna timeshare. Uh,
Murphy and Baldwin. Yeah, I mean Drake Baldwin has been
it's lost in the shuffle, but.
Speaker 3 (01:07:35):
He's been very good and like Murphy has been good
since he came back from this injury.
Speaker 1 (01:07:40):
So yeah, so yeah, and just it's been a year.
I look this fine to get through. I honestly thought
it would be a team.
Speaker 2 (01:07:51):
Just in more of contention.
Speaker 1 (01:07:53):
Not that you want to run, but some of these
teams need somebody.
Speaker 3 (01:07:58):
Gets a showcase for two months, right, so you can
try to get something back for his to put him
off in the shop window for some sort of deal
next year.
Speaker 2 (01:08:09):
Right.
Speaker 1 (01:08:10):
Uh, the Tigers, it's a very similar situation. The Tigers
picked up Luke Jackson, who was DFA from the Rangers.
Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
This is team natural, but I guess yeah natural. Yeah,
I mean the option tider Montero for this, which does
not make me thrilled.
Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
But yeah, that's a little odd because the reason they're
picking up the Jackson is I don't know, I know
what happened earlier, but the Carlos Hernandez uh DFA really
felt like the actual accompanying move to this one. Hernandez,
you know, it's only pitch ten innings, but his era
is also ten. I think think they're they're they're top
(01:08:50):
five of their bullpender good and then there's a real drop.
Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
Off the whatever. You can try out Luke Jackson first.
Speaker 2 (01:08:56):
Also, the Jackson is part of that drop off. Now, yes,
I don't think he's really any better than you know,
you're John Rebus, but he's different.
Speaker 1 (01:09:06):
You can try Yeah, I mean, I guess it's one
of those things where it's like can we can we
do something with him? But as Patrick noted.
Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
Like I mean there still yeah, they're still like what
kind of eight games up on the division, so it
costs nothing to find out.
Speaker 1 (01:09:20):
Yeah, I mean it's it's it's so weird that, like
the bullpen has been a point of concern, but it's
also been pretty good.
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Yeah, yeah, both of those. It's good when it needs
to be. And you know when any five run lead,
you know, or any five run deficit five run deficits
become nine run deficits, you know. Yeah, it's it's just
it's lot Jackson like, and I wrote this in the
TA like, its just their closer, man, I know, but
(01:09:49):
like if Luke nine saves, no one has ever like
until he was like, oh I'm suddenly a fantasy relevant closer.
No one has thought about Luke Jackson twice in the
same month. It's just he is. He is this guy
for different teams. He's just this guy for the Tigers now. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:10:12):
Bryce Harper does not want a salary cap.
Speaker 3 (01:10:17):
He does not, very strongly, very strongly.
Speaker 1 (01:10:20):
The Jeff Passon is one of the reporters on this.
Speaker 2 (01:10:23):
I think multiple had this right.
Speaker 1 (01:10:27):
I'm looking at the ESPN article saying that Bryce Harper
stood nose to nose with Rob Manfred during a meeting
that the commissioners going to all thirty teams.
Speaker 2 (01:10:37):
I think we talked about this he was.
Speaker 1 (01:10:40):
With the Phillies last week and he stood Harper stood
nose to nose with him and told him to quote,
get the fuck out of our clubhouse.
Speaker 2 (01:10:50):
End quote.
Speaker 1 (01:10:52):
If Manfred wanted to talk about the potential implementation of
a salary cap. I should note I've mentioned this news
let multiple times, but the Bandwagon from Zach Kreiser and
Hannah Kaiser mentioned this meeting last week. They had quote
from Castianos about it that seemingly referred to this incident
(01:11:12):
without getting the specifics that it was Bryce Harper and
specifically what he said, but that Cassianas characterized the meeting
as contentious or sorry, passionate, but not contentious, and that
at times the conversation did get heated enough for players
to express some version of quote. Well, in that case
you can leave to the commissioner. I assume that is
(01:11:35):
the Harper comment, if not others as well, and that
Casiana said it's only natural that players would quote speak
sternly end quote when the ideal of a salary cap
comes up. When asked if you did bring up a
salary cap, Casaaliana said that Manfred was very eloquently speaking
around it is I believe that's that's his version of
(01:11:57):
what I've repeatedly called, Uh, Rob Manfred's loyally dissembling.
Speaker 2 (01:12:03):
Maybe you'll forget what I have publicly and directly stated
multiple times to the press.
Speaker 3 (01:12:13):
Yeah, well he didn't say it this time.
Speaker 2 (01:12:17):
Maybe he's changed his money maybe.
Speaker 1 (01:12:21):
Yeah, yeah, I mean this is this is what conversations
with Rob Manfred tend to go.
Speaker 3 (01:12:26):
Yeah, is what my reaction of us have any of
us not at some point in the last five years
wanted to go to Rob Manfred and get the fuck
out of say, get the fuck out of here?
Speaker 2 (01:12:40):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:12:40):
Yeah, again, this is uh Harper sitting quiet for the
majority of a meeting and holding a bat. I like texture.
Speaker 8 (01:12:53):
Him he's a baseball club, but it adds a little
texture to the the heat rose all degrees, yes, and
holding a bat and hold so that if MLB were
to propose a cap and hold firm to it, players
are quote not scared to lose one hundred and sixty
two games.
Speaker 1 (01:13:10):
End quote.
Speaker 2 (01:13:11):
This is via This is via the ESPN article from
their sources.
Speaker 3 (01:13:16):
Stood up Euro Games and.
Speaker 1 (01:13:18):
Harper stood up, walked toward the middle of the room,
faced up to Manfred and said, if you want to
speak about that, you can get the fuck out of
our clubhouse, shout out Bryce Harper.
Speaker 2 (01:13:31):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:13:32):
Manfred and the sources said, responded that he was quote
not going to get the fuck out of here. He's
he's gonna this is the George Costanza shrimp store line.
He's gonna think I there was something better than I'm
not going to do what you said. As a retort later, Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:13:57):
Yeah, So I'm sure a year and a half, everybody's
looking great. Everything's looking great.
Speaker 1 (01:14:06):
Yeah, I mean, look, this is I think again Manford
has come out and said the lockout is is basically
going to happen. That's normal business. It's a weapon. I'm
not denying that it's a weapon. I just don't think
it's a missile.
Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
It's a weapon against me, like it's a weapon against us,
like it's the weapon against the people who care about
baseball as much as there's anybody else. It's just h Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
I mean I tend to agree Jeff that we're probably
not going to lose games. I think Manford is very
proud of his record. I'm not losing games.
Speaker 2 (01:14:38):
He's this will be his last CBA suppose supposedly.
Speaker 1 (01:14:43):
And so I don't. I don't think it's there. I
also don't think it's good that this is happening so
publicly so early, Like I do think it can be
you know, it just means we're in for another twenty
twenty two, right.
Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
Well, it's also like how the suddenly, like the presidential
debates just started like months and months earlier, and we had.
Speaker 2 (01:15:05):
Yeah, And I don't think that was either.
Speaker 1 (01:15:08):
That's I mean, look, we had, you know, and I
guess credit to foul Territory. Bruce Meyer was on foul
Territory within the last week or two kind of rebutting
some of this stuff, putting the PA's side out on this,
And I guess that's good, except for the fact that
it's bad that it's happening in public.
Speaker 2 (01:15:30):
At all.
Speaker 3 (01:15:31):
Finally got agreed on we all started looking forward, not
looking at.
Speaker 2 (01:15:36):
It happens.
Speaker 1 (01:15:37):
But again, like they shouldn't be conducting this way. Look,
if ESPN is going to report on it or whoever
is going to report on it, and then we get
it that way, that's that's sometimes that even is a
bad sign that it's leaking, right, But like the fact
that they're just conducting public dr public what am I doing.
(01:15:59):
The fact that they're conducting pr this way is just
it's it's a sign the deterioration is is even bigger,
right in a lot of ways, and I do I
do think it's like maybe it's obvious to say that
it's silly, but especially this CBA, Like we don't know
(01:16:21):
what the agreements are gonna be like. And when I
say agreements, I mean the streaming and television deals. Right,
Like ESPN is suddenly back in on on some of this.
Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
Cod not thrilled having watched the broadcast last night.
Speaker 1 (01:16:37):
Yeah, I mean it is. I'm gonna be like I've
said this before, I really I don't watch Sunday Night Baseball.
It's untenable. And that's what I need to be clear.
Like David Cone, is a massive improvement over what they
had previously.
Speaker 2 (01:16:52):
I could not watch.
Speaker 1 (01:16:53):
The the Matt Vescursion version of this. I don't love
the Carl Ravich led one, but it is something. It
is an improvement on the best version, a Rod version,
and it's still it's it's unwatchable. Yeah, anyway, like we
(01:17:15):
don't know what any of that is going to look like,
and it makes it really hard to then go about
dividing up the pot, right, Like I just I don't
even know. I don't know that they know what what
we're even fighting about yet in a lot of ways,
so I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:17:33):
Anyway.
Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
That's that's the regular portion of the show. Let's go
to WHA. Sorry, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (01:17:37):
I'm just gonna say what a fun.
Speaker 1 (01:17:41):
At uplifting indians two segments here. Let's go to our
our game. I don't know who's running this, Jeff, are
you running this running?
Speaker 3 (01:17:50):
I haven't looked at it.
Speaker 2 (01:17:52):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (01:17:52):
I also have not looked at it.
Speaker 2 (01:17:53):
I didn't look at oh.
Speaker 1 (01:17:54):
I forgot I thought you were running because I forgot
that it was the user submitted, Yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (01:17:58):
Can run it that.
Speaker 3 (01:18:00):
It doesn't matter to me. It's fine whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:18:02):
I just have to find it. Let's see. I mean
I have do you want me to run it?
Speaker 3 (01:18:06):
I think it's it's about you, So.
Speaker 2 (01:18:08):
Yeah, well, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:18:09):
I didn't read it a first line.
Speaker 2 (01:18:12):
Okay, so uh, that's not sure that I agree with.
That's fine, that's fine. Uh. Intrepid listener Brighton Swan is
sending an email to us as a resident of Ottawa, Ontario.
I was tickled by an event many episodes ago that
I also do not remember Canadian provinces.
Speaker 1 (01:18:30):
Oh so, so here's what I want to say. I
just want to clarify this about what I'm what I'm
disagreeing with I think I know. I mean, look, I
don't know all the provinces like start. No, No, I'm
sure what I'm saying. I'm not utterly ignorant of the
Canadian provinces, but I do have to, like, if it
is remotely related to geography of like where each province is,
(01:18:55):
I don't know that at all.
Speaker 2 (01:18:56):
I mean I literally said Scranton was in New Jersey
in an oracle last night.
Speaker 1 (01:19:00):
Yeah, and I didn't catch it.
Speaker 2 (01:19:01):
So that's good.
Speaker 1 (01:19:02):
I knew that.
Speaker 2 (01:19:03):
And look, as I resplied to the commentary like after midnight,
my geography skills can come entirely vibe space.
Speaker 1 (01:19:10):
I want to be like, if you said, like, like
I know a number, I'm not going to say I
think there are ten. I think there are ten. I
don't know all ten, Okay, Like I'm sure I would
forget one if you asked me to list them. I'm
worried that this is where this is going.
Speaker 3 (01:19:24):
But funny, honestly, if it was Canadian geography related, but
I think it's Canadian baseball.
Speaker 1 (01:19:32):
If I if I have to tell you, like which
province Toronto is in, I'm going to.
Speaker 2 (01:19:37):
Be very unsure. I should know.
Speaker 1 (01:19:42):
Oh no, I should know that for sure, but I'm
I'm not sure I do.
Speaker 2 (01:19:47):
Like I also, I live so far over in the
corner of our continent that I like it gives me
more room of other halves of the continent to be like,
it's too far away from me to care about. Toronto
is very far away from me. I will tell you, look, Thankcouver,
that's sure. Yeah, but it takes me like eight hours
to get past British Columbia. So like, why why were you?
Speaker 1 (01:20:09):
I was gonna say, I actually go to a mountain range.
I know Vancouver, that that one I locked out, like
that one I know. But I also, I'll just show
my geographical ass here, like I I am. Regularly I
look at a map and I'm always like, oh damn,
Like Illinois is that far east? Okay, right in my
head it's the middle of the country.
Speaker 2 (01:20:29):
It's it's not.
Speaker 1 (01:20:30):
I mean it is, but it's not right. That's where
that state is, right, geographically speaking, I knew all the
ones that are around it. But I often screw up,
kind of like how far west something is? I always
think I'm an idiot.
Speaker 2 (01:20:44):
I don't. I played trivia pursuit yesterday with my mom,
which I do when she comes down, and I'm so
bad at geography, and every time I played trivia for suit,
I go. You know, I should just like spend six hours,
just take an afternoon and then just learn it all
a map, get a map, just stare at it, and
then just be better at geography the rest of my life.
And I've never done it. I've never I've never put
(01:21:05):
in the time. I don't know what any rivers called anywhere.
I have one river near us, that's all. Yeah, and
they're all rivers. They don't need to have names, you know,
when he lives in them. All right, so let's start
the game.
Speaker 1 (01:21:20):
Do we want to thank the person who sent this up?
Speaker 3 (01:21:24):
I mean, you can you can judge if you want
to thank them after.
Speaker 1 (01:21:29):
Yeah, we'll credit him. Yeah, is bright and fine, and
then we can thank him later.
Speaker 2 (01:21:35):
All right. There are ten questions. Apparently they are not
all Canadian baseball related, because he ran out of Canadian questions.
That's that's fine, all right. Question one. In the comic
spider Man Dead Ball May nineteen ninety three, Spider Man
meets the Montreal expos He meets four famous players, in particular,
(01:21:55):
which four players does he meet? Trying to which light
is this?
Speaker 3 (01:22:00):
Lightning round? Shouldn't we do in this?
Speaker 2 (01:22:02):
Oh? Yeah, I guess we shall.
Speaker 3 (01:22:03):
I'll take off my headphone, all right, take off. The
first question is it's not gonna help?
Speaker 2 (01:22:07):
Yeah? Who how many?
Speaker 1 (01:22:10):
Nineteen ninety three?
Speaker 2 (01:22:11):
Yeah, ninety three.
Speaker 1 (01:22:12):
So I have to name all of them or I
just have to get any of them.
Speaker 2 (01:22:14):
We will give you.
Speaker 1 (01:22:15):
We'll give you half a point for each one you get.
You get four guesses, Okay, I'm gonna say Tim Rains. Okay,
I'm trying to think like Larry Walker, Okay, because I
don't like if it was written in ninety three, I
don't know. I mean, I'm be honest. I don't remember
specifically when Larry Walker went to Colorado, but like I uh,
(01:22:40):
it was ninety three when was Pedro up for them?
That seems little, That seems early for that. This is
gonna be real dumb of me, And I apologize, but
I'm gonna say Gary Carter he was he was on
the expos right.
Speaker 2 (01:22:54):
Like, but I don't know the time at some point. Yeah, sure, and.
Speaker 9 (01:23:02):
Jesus no, I'm just I can't like it's gonna be
too late for flat right, I'm gonna say, wait, I
mean too early.
Speaker 2 (01:23:16):
Sorry.
Speaker 1 (01:23:17):
Yeah, I'm just gonna say Pedro, I don't know. That's
a bad guess question too. The Blue Jays seventh inning
stretch song Okay Blue Jays, released in nineteen eighty three,
mentions one player by his first name?
Speaker 2 (01:23:28):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (01:23:30):
Uh? I'm sorry, what year?
Speaker 2 (01:23:32):
Nineteen eighty three? Nineteen eighty three? God, dude.
Speaker 1 (01:23:42):
The brutal part of this is like this is for Patrick,
this is this is like the nineteen eighty three Blue Jays.
Speaker 2 (01:23:48):
Yeah, my, I want to think, I want to think
I would get this right. I mean, we'll never know, announce.
I'm looking at the answer, but I'm pretty sure I
would have gotten it. Boy, I don't know. Uh, Steve
all right? Uh? Next, Eric Gane has the most career
saves by Canadian player. Yeah, who has the second most
(01:24:09):
saves by Canadian war player? I think I think saying
who had the most saves by Canadian player probably would
have been a fair question.
Speaker 1 (01:24:17):
I would I think I could have gotten that.
Speaker 2 (01:24:19):
I don't know if I would have gotten it. I mean,
come on, you know, I don't know who's saying why Jesus,
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:24:28):
I mean like they don't tell you that.
Speaker 2 (01:24:30):
I think.
Speaker 1 (01:24:30):
I think we by the way, it's all the individual
like the non team sports like tennis or whatever, are
always putting up the Canadian like, you know, the flag
of the person who like where they're from. I'm gonna
need that. We don't tell who's Canadian anymore. I think
like Jamison Tyone, I think is Canadian, but you'd never guess.
You'd never know.
Speaker 2 (01:24:52):
I don't know who Canadian believers are. That's fine.
Speaker 1 (01:24:55):
I guess I'm gonna say, Jamison Tyon, does he have
any saves?
Speaker 2 (01:24:58):
Maybe? How many play off seriously, the Montreal Exposed win
during their existence? How many playoff series? Oh? I have
I have no idea? Five? Okay, as you know, Upie
was the Montreal Exposed mascot. Whatever happened to you pie?
(01:25:22):
Is there an answer? Yes, there is an answer to this.
Speaker 1 (01:25:25):
I think is he not? He might still be around? Okay, well,
need a little more detail than that. I don't Is
he just like I have no idea city. Mascot's a
good answer. It's wrong, but it's a good answer. Question
number six, Which Canadian board player of these three has
the most career walks? Terry Pull, Jason Bay or Justin Morneau.
Speaker 2 (01:25:49):
Huh, I'll go with Bay. Okay, Well, what was the
name of the Canadian minor league team that Jackie Robinson
played for?
Speaker 1 (01:26:04):
Oh? It was Montreal?
Speaker 2 (01:26:08):
Mm hm Did I ever focus on the nickname? Probably not?
Was it the Monarchs? Something with royalty. I think it's
like Royals or Monarchs or something something like that.
Speaker 1 (01:26:29):
I'll say the Monarchs. Okay, it's alliterative, and I guess
that's what minor league teams do based on our last games.
Speaker 2 (01:26:39):
Fair enough non Canadian questions sam three more. Between nineteen
seventy six and twenty twelve, a sponsored award for the
best reliever in each league was given out. Who was
the sponsors? It's good relief yep.
Speaker 1 (01:26:54):
By the way, that's a that's a beautiful sponsor. Yeah,
that's it just works perfectly.
Speaker 2 (01:27:01):
There's only one player who is a winner the only
there's only one player who is a winner of the
formerly mentioned reliever award who has thrown a pitch in
the majors this season. Because the reliever award was retired
in twelve, they changed it.
Speaker 1 (01:27:15):
Yeah, so someone who won the award is still still
pitched this year. I don't think rich Hill won the reliever.
It's got to be a role as chatman.
Speaker 2 (01:27:30):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:27:31):
And finally he came over twenty twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:27:35):
Maybe that's wrong.
Speaker 1 (01:27:37):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:27:39):
I'm not going to think of anything better off the
stop top.
Speaker 1 (01:27:41):
Of all right, this one I feel like is impossible.
We'll just ask Annyway. In nineteen eighty seven, a publicity
stunt wedding took place at Shay Stadium before a Mets
pirates came.
Speaker 2 (01:27:50):
Okay, this is Jeffrey coated all yes, it is. We'll
see if he gets it. Who are the bride and groom?
Mister and missus met? Okay, all right, thank you, Jeff,
you're up. Craig got one between three and a half
and four points. Okay, I'm gonna I'm giving him a
(01:28:12):
tiebreaker one. Okay, all right, So Jeff in the comic
spider Man Dead Ball spider Man meets the Montreal expos
He needs four famous players, in particular, which four players
does he meet? Half a point eat, you get four guesses.
Speaker 3 (01:28:27):
Dennis Martinez, Oh damn it?
Speaker 2 (01:28:31):
Okay, good one.
Speaker 3 (01:28:34):
Ninety three, Larry Walker ninety three, thinky too much, child?
I should know this. I'm also not wondering how much
Marvel was up on the current ninety three expos roster
when they wrote this, which is a problem.
Speaker 1 (01:28:51):
I mostly went for what I assumed to be eighties expos. Yeah,
all right, don't listen to me, though, I'm a more
like this is not my.
Speaker 3 (01:29:00):
I the Lino deshields, I'll throw I'll throw a Andre
Dawson in there too. Just why not?
Speaker 2 (01:29:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:29:10):
That would have been That would have been a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:29:12):
That would have been very eighties. The Blue Jays seventh
inning stretchco song Okay Blue Jays, released in nineteen eighty three,
mentions one player by his first name, Who is it
eighty three?
Speaker 3 (01:29:23):
Let's go with George, George Bell George. I'll just say George.
Maybe it's a different George.
Speaker 2 (01:29:28):
Eric Gagne has the most career saved by a Canadian
worn player. Did you know that? Who has the second
most by Canadian warn player?
Speaker 3 (01:29:37):
I don't know where people.
Speaker 2 (01:29:38):
I should have made this one worth ninety eight points
because This is what feels impossible. Who was born like.
Speaker 3 (01:29:46):
Canadian born? It's like because you got like the secret
Canadians right like that? Oh yeah, Canadian picture. I'm trying
to think. I just pitched for a team Canada and
that's certainly not coming to me. I don't want to
(01:30:08):
spend I'll say Jim Johnson is secretly Canadian.
Speaker 2 (01:30:12):
That feels like a good Yeah, it's a barly Canadian guy.
How many playoff series did the Montreal Expos win during
their existence?
Speaker 3 (01:30:19):
One?
Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
All right? As you know, UPI was the Montreal exposed mascot.
Whatever happened to you? Up?
Speaker 3 (01:30:28):
Doesn't you like show about Canadians?
Speaker 2 (01:30:30):
Game? Sometimes?
Speaker 1 (01:30:33):
Which Canadian born player of the three these three has
the most career walks? Terry Poole, Jason Bay, Justin Morneau.
Speaker 7 (01:30:42):
More.
Speaker 2 (01:30:43):
Now, what was the name of the Canadian minor league
team that Jackie Robinson played for.
Speaker 3 (01:30:50):
That the It's the Montreal Royals.
Speaker 2 (01:30:53):
It's all right, okay?
Speaker 1 (01:30:57):
Non Canadian questions for the final three Between nineteen sive
twenty six. In twenty twelve, a sponsored award for the
best believer and each sports league was each league was
given out. Who was the sponsor.
Speaker 3 (01:31:08):
Rolaids.
Speaker 2 (01:31:09):
All right, he was. He left the parenthetical saying is
this something everyone knows? And the answer is yes?
Speaker 3 (01:31:15):
Is that a Canadian company? Like I don't no, no, okay.
Speaker 2 (01:31:22):
Next question, there is only one player who is a
winner of the formerly mentioned Reliever Award who has thrown
a pitch in the majors this year. Who is it?
Speaker 3 (01:31:30):
What was the last year of it?
Speaker 2 (01:31:32):
Twenty twelve?
Speaker 3 (01:31:33):
Twelve? Is Laver Kenley Johnson?
Speaker 2 (01:31:46):
I like this one. That's a good question.
Speaker 3 (01:31:48):
David rd Yeah, DAWs pitch in the majors, pitch.
Speaker 2 (01:31:54):
In the majors.
Speaker 3 (01:31:54):
Yeah, uh h, I'll just go they're all just Chapman then, okay.
Speaker 2 (01:32:02):
And in this in nineteen eighty seven, a publicity stunt
wedding took place at Shay Stadium before a Mets Pirates game.
Who were the bride and groom?
Speaker 3 (01:32:15):
I should know this theoretically, like this is like that
that should be somewhere in the Mets a lexicon of mine.
Speaker 2 (01:32:25):
What's thirty eight years ago?
Speaker 3 (01:32:26):
It was I'll just say, mister and missus Matt. I
don't think that was the.
Speaker 2 (01:32:29):
Right all right, So the answers, by the way, uh, Jeff,
you win four to three? And a half, so Craig's
tiebreaker did not quite kick in. In the comic Spider Man,
dead Man dead Ball, he meets four exposed. Larry Walker's
one Delino deshield is one.
Speaker 3 (01:32:47):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:32:48):
I am surprised you got to shields but didn't go
to the other deshields, which is Markus Grisson.
Speaker 1 (01:32:51):
They both yeah, yeah, yeah, I always think that was
the pro deshields trade. I knew it was the wrong well.
Speaker 2 (01:32:59):
I think it was the little later yeah, the fourth
one then, yeah, I think so, yeah, okay, and the
fourth one was beloved of the podcast moys. I still do.
Speaker 3 (01:33:11):
Oh yeah, I thought those are good polls.
Speaker 2 (01:33:13):
That was a good two poles. Yeah uh yeah yeah,
almost next year they would be yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:33:19):
Question two the the Blue Jays seventhing strong, It says
seventh inning stretch song. Okay, Blue Jays refers to Dave
Dave Steep, Oh you got.
Speaker 2 (01:33:28):
It, I got that holy ship. That's wild. Eric Gane
has the most career saved by Canadian. The second most
saves by Canadian is John Exford.
Speaker 3 (01:33:37):
Of course, oh yeah, now you said that. I knew
he was Canadian because he did pitch for the for
team Canada.
Speaker 2 (01:33:43):
Yeah yeah, see I didn't really I.
Speaker 3 (01:33:44):
Would have done that time.
Speaker 2 (01:33:46):
But how many playoffs series did the Montreal ex Bos
windering their existence? One? Yet? Yes, it was nineteen eighty
one against the Phillies. Uh up in the Montreal ex
post mascot does the Canadians by him and he has
become one of the mascots and he does like he's
the only mascot to my knowledge to uh to Brighton's
(01:34:09):
to switch teams, switch sports. I mean the San Diego
Chicken has moved around, but he's always that's an individual
that's a third party. Which Canadian player has the most
career walks. It's not Terry Pole, but it's also not
justin or No, it is Jason Oh. I mean I
know the Canadian team that Jackie Robinson played for is
(01:34:30):
in fact the Montreal Royals. Good job, Jeff.
Speaker 1 (01:34:32):
I literally said, I said, it's it's roy I said
it's something Royals or Royals or the Monarchs.
Speaker 2 (01:34:41):
That's gonna give you.
Speaker 1 (01:34:43):
That's okay. I mean I said, like, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
You said you knew it was there. So it is
the role aids award the player the only player to
throw a pitch this season, who has won it is
Craig kimberl Oh. Yeah, technically like six pitches. Yeah, good,
good good Queshion in the publicity stunt wedding involved Spider
Man and Mary Jane Watson, who got married in June fifth, nineteen.
Speaker 1 (01:35:07):
What are the that's doing?
Speaker 3 (01:35:09):
They're seven and zero in the Pablo Sanchez era. So
he showed up and they have lost. Since we're doing
it again, Craig, we're doing it again, just so you
know that's fine.
Speaker 2 (01:35:21):
All right, Thank you Brighton. Yes, it is a game.
Thank you Patrick for administrating. Yeah, thank you for all
the listeners who will now send in games for us him. Yeah,
especially this week. This week it's particular. I we love
to em.
Speaker 3 (01:35:35):
This week we're going to do a deadline wrap up.
Speaker 1 (01:35:37):
So I'm going to say I don't know who is
still listening, but I do know I've heard from more
than one listener that they don't like it when we
don't have a game. Yeah, they are in it for
the games. So let me tell you something.
Speaker 2 (01:35:48):
With a deadline wrap up coming, if you want a game,
help us be the change you want to see in
the world.
Speaker 1 (01:35:54):
Exactly be the game. At the end of the podcast
you want to hear in the world. Thank you to
you both for hosting this episode. Thank you to our
listeners for tuning in to another episode of five and
Dive brought to you by the Baseball Perspectives podcast Network.
You can get in touch with the show at five
and Dive at Baseball perspectives dot com. We are wherever
you get your podcasts. Search for Baseball Perspectives Podcast Network
and we'll be in that feed. If you enjoy what
(01:36:15):
we're doing, give us a rating and review five stars only.
Speaker 2 (01:36:18):
Please.
Speaker 1 (01:36:18):
I know it's obnoxious to ask for that, but legitimately
it's the only thing that helps. I'm sorry, uh and uh.
We'll see you later this week for sure.
