Speaker 1 (00:31):
Welcome to episode four ninety one of five and Dive.
It is Monday, September fifteenth. I am your host, crenklest
enjoined as usual by Patrick Dubuke and Jeffrey Petter Nostrol.
We had a weekend. We had some time to drum
up some banter. What do you guys got.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
What do you think I do on the weekends?
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Crank, I don't know, drum up some banter?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, take the kid to swim class. I am not
looking on that note. I am not looking forward to
next week's swim class because that is it roughly the
same time as the Utah Texas Tech game, and they're
having like the Fox Sports college football pre game there.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Oh, is it like on campus the class or whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, the class is on campus. Yeah, and it's not
that far. It's not close to the football stadium, but
it's not that far from the football stadium. And basically
every parking lot becomes a fifty dollars car tailgating extravaganza.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
We'll keep telling me I need to go to a
Utah football game, and I would actually like to go
to a Utah football game at some point. They are
incredibly expensive. It's like an eight thousand seat stadium and
they're still incredibly expensive. It's only it is. I'm like,
you know, half the city of Salt Lake probably went
to college there.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
So I spent my weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
I spent yesterday going to a women's college volleyball game,
basically like one of my friends from college invited me
on it and seem while I'm like, all right, well,
this is how we're going to do it. So I'm
gonna catch up to you and we're gonna watch volleyball.
All this is happening, I will say, you know, no,
no shame to anybody who is a volleyball employer.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
I would say, on the list of.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Sports on the spectrum, it is a sport that it's
more fun to play than watch, mostly just because volleyball
I think has a lot of three true outcomes to it.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
It seems like this does seem like a sport they
may have like optimized at this point to.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
A certain degree. I think.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
I think what it is is that it's fun to
play because all of the variations are very minute. A
set is off by an inch or five inches or
eight inches, and you have to see somebody react, but
you you can't see someone react eight inches from you know,
were you know, it was a it was an intimate setting,
but I was still, you know, one hundred feet away
(02:48):
from somebody who is trying to move half a foot
over to try and spike a ball. And so you
just kind of like you see the spike, you see
the block, any other works or it doesn't.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yeah, And I mean it's it's obviously I see. It's
just like full team volleyball, like beach volleyball, there's like
more moving around. Yeah, you can kind of and then
they're on sand, so it's not like easy moving around either.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
It's interesting. I feel like whenever the Olympics roll around,
or I guess maybe some high level college volleyball, like
I always kind of walk away with the feeling like
this could be the Like I don't know why this
isn't bigger on TV. I feel like TV.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
I think it's a professional volleyball team, women's volleyball team
in Utah, I think.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
But it seems because there is a lot of impressive
even though you can't see all those little the minute
kind of adjustments, like there's a lot of there are
a lot of points that are just kind of nothing,
but like we watch baseball, you know, Like, who am
I to judge on that front? There's a lot to mean.
That's how soccer works too, right, It's a there's a
(03:47):
build up right there. It's all part of like the
bigger story of that of the individual game. But yeah,
it's yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
I also think that volleyball is very momentum based. I
am very glad that they have switched like we they I.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Don't know when, but only for volleyball, right pretty much. Yeah,
it feels like it whether they get supposed to feel
like it.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
And yet the game I watched there, it was really
kind of back and forth because like you, whoever servings
a disadvantage the other team gets just like first. And
so like it is, it's got this mechanical system to
keep anybody from really having too much of it. It's
hard to score multiple points in a row, but it
still seems to happen. I will say that that one
(04:28):
thing I found interesting. It is fun to watch a
sport you don't know very well. But it's I find
what I do is I look at the statistics of
the sport that I don't know very well, which I
know even less well and I've fund it very interesting
looking at the like they had a few stats.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Up on the board on the side, you know, where
the stuff would go in basketball or anything like that.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
And so they had like attack percentage success sure, you know,
number of aces okay, good, and then the number of
blocks Yeah, sure, that's fine. Uh the reason that our
hometown six or hometown whatever, Yeah, I guess hometown sex
it's whatever's on the core at the same time, right, baseball,
it's the hometen nine. They lost because they just kept
(05:06):
serving the ball out of bounce unforced errors, yeah, which
was not a statistic on the board, and like percentage
has to be right, No, it wasn't there. And I'm
like this seems like a very basic I feel like
there's a lot of stuff from tennis that could be
poureded in yeah, very easily. Yeah, And so I was
kind of like, Okay, it's very like the statistics here
(05:27):
are not describing why one side is losing.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
So it's wild to have aces, but not so.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Yeah, there are five aces in five sets, like you know,
it's like but like there were definitely more points lost
on misters than there were gained by aces, but like
aces are cooler. I guess you know, so they are cool.
But also it's also it's not like tennis volleyball. It's
very like it's not a volleyball ace.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Is not the same as a Tennessee.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
So Tennessee's is often just over like perfect execution overpowering tennis.
A volleyball is basically put the correct amount of spin
to make the person like basically misjudge or dove under
where somebody.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
It's kind of the opponent looking silly, right, it's hard
to miss. There's too many people on the court for
you to That's that's what I was thinking.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, very often use tennis. You can literally serve a
ball that someone can't return right if.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
You can't, if you can either put it right on
the tape or like an insane amount of kick in
the right spot, like you can make it almost impossible.
This is just like can I make you screw up? Yeah? Yeah,
and please write.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
In we must have volleyball players.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
This is just my uneducated view, but it was good
and I enjoyed it. Yeah, I reveal my ignorance every episode.
Someone someone get Patrick here?
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Please do you have any college sports thoughts cracked?
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Do I have any college sports. No, college basketball hasn't
started off.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Are you excited for the North Carolina season?
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Uh? Not really?
Speaker 2 (07:10):
I don't really like obviously, I don't think it's gonna
be bad.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
They're they're d Yeah, sorry, they're they're they're not keeping
up with the Joneses in the number. They're paying Bill
Belichrack a lot of money.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
It's true.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
So it's it's not going to the basketball.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Well, they allowed England Patriots scouts in the basketball.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
I don't know they did. They used to have some
uh some crossover players in days of Julius Peppers and
Ronald Hurry, but not not so much anymore. All right, Uh,
shall we go on to our first Let's get on
the show Once upon a Time in your wildest cards.
Speaking of spiking, there's the the Mets playoff chances. Yeah,
(07:53):
they finally won a game.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Very different in a row. Yes, and no te close
to nine, very close to nine. No team has ever
made the playoffs with the nine game losing streaking the season.
Now the Mets three of Yeah, apparently Mets fans are
looking it up.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Well, yeah, but the Dodgers lost.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
They didn't actually they didn't actually trust me. That's like
the cop. They did not actually lose nine in a
row at any point in that.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
Would they lose eleven of twelve at one point or
something like yeah, something that the men still could lose
eleven to twelve two?
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Oh, yeah, they actually could. It was twenty seventeen, right, yeah,
I think so. Maybe twenty eighteen might have been twenty eighteen.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
I think it was.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
I have to check the discord, but uh, yeah, they've
also lost seven in a row three times, which I
feel like is worse than losing nine in a row
once if I do the math right.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Yes, twenty seventeen lost eleven in a row.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
No, did they?
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Okay, in September September second through the eleventh, they lost
nine in a row.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
One of my discords has not done proper research then,
but I remember one.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
But yeah, no, I mean, but the point stands, right,
even if it's one like, yes, okay, it's that was
really bad. That was bad times they.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
Want to basically in the White Sox in June.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
First, I'm gonna say, it's not what you want. It
is not it's what the White Sox want.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
I mean, they actually did not lose ground this weekend,
despite losing two of three because the Reds got swept
and I guess they lost ground to the Diamondback. So
we'll come on right. But the Giants lost two of three.
I had to watch way too much Dodgers baseball. I
don't know how Craig does well.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
You you you were texting me? What did I answer?
You said? How do you do this? And heartburn?
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (09:45):
It's not I yeah again. I know it's it's first
first world problems, but.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
It really is.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
No, it's not pleasant.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
No, it's not. No, my looking forward to had a
good weekend.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Okay, sure what, I'm by his standards, he had it.
He's over he's hitting over two hundred. I can't. I
can't change the results. I look, I will say this.
I will say that he had he had a home
run that was legitimate. He did like over four hundred feet.
It was a legit home run. The two are the
(10:17):
two RBI. Single that he hit was every single double
playground ball he's hit into this year, except the Giants
had pulled the infield in and the second basement still
almost got to it. I can't change the result.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
You can only adjust.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
This was the process. The process was not better.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
The process was now my process might work because the infield.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Right, I'm sure he was thinking that. No. I So, yeah,
the Giants did not make up ground. They did get
a walk off grand Slam from Picture Bailey.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Ye had a couple extra base hits this weekend.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Oh yes he did, so did Ben Murtfitz. Somehow, it
was a weird series. It was a weird series off
of Tanner Scott, who the Dodgers just continued to. That's
just say, say the Dodgers Dave Roberts just ninth inning
game in the balance. I guess this was the tenth inning.
But the closer he's.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
They don't even use the closure.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Well, the mentality applies, although they're not like they he
seems to understand. I can only pitch Kirby Yates up
by five runs or more, so I don't know why
it doesn't apply to to Tanner Scott. Uh. Yeah, so
the Giants didn't gain ground. So obviously, Jeff, you have
a podcast about this, so I'm not going to ask
(11:35):
you to go through everything. But like Sean and I
has lost his rotation spot, yes kind of because he's backing.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Yeah, well he's like good for three innings and let
it go so uh.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Jonah Thong had had some tough.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
You get to blow up yeah against the Rangers in
the first game of that serious but it.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Seems to me between Long and Sproute and McLean like
they've pulled the levers.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
McLean, yeah, both through So I'm not saying they've all Yeah,
they pulled the lever. Will Watson had a really good
start for Binghamton this week.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
So they just straight from.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Yeah, it was the USC bullpen last year at this time,
I think.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
So, you know, I have not watched the the Mets
a ton.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
It's worse Rogers, I will.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Say losing sugar, I don't doubt, but like, what what
is it?
Speaker 2 (12:34):
And everything? It's literally every everything. It's just everything. They
had to kind of fixed the offense in August and
they still want to victory lap Yeah, because the starters
were not getting out of the fourth inning base they
were going up like three four nothing early and just
it's it's a lot of like people have compted to
two thousand and seven, I don't think it's really two
(12:54):
thousand and seven for a variety of reasons. I mean,
they like they were much better much later in the
season in two thousand and seven they were this year.
But I just have that feeling where they'll score some
runs early and then just not add on and then
you're just waiting for David Peterson to give up, you know,
to stay in two batters too long. You have like
a walk of double and a single, and then summer
(13:17):
reliever comes in and doesn't finish it off, and they
just never They have not won a single game they've
been trailing in the ninth inning this year, which like,
you don't win a lot of those for obvious, but
you should to be able to get a couple of
hits some point at home.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Right, at some point down one run and he hit
a solo homer and then win the game.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yeah, but they have to give your fans something, right,
some one game to remember to be like, oh, yeah,
that happens.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
They've lost like eleven out of twelve one run games
in this streak two.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
Well, it was a lot of I was gonna say
some of that we I think we might have mentioned
it or right, or I was talking about it somewhere else.
But some of that is like they were down several
runs and then put up runs to lose by one. Yeah,
so it's like in the ninth or whatever. So it's
a little bit deceiving kind of. I mean it still counts, Yes,
it does to your point about it being everything. Like
(14:14):
I was about to say, like the stereotype, I did
see some of the Phillies Metskain when that Lozardo started
and they put up four and then he retired what
twenty two twenty three in a row.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Something that I think they think they threw a perfect
game after he gave up four runs.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Yeah, and then like I was gonna say, that's like
seems to be stereotypical. But then like the next night
or two nights later, they have the game they're win
and Edwin Diaz just blows it right.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
I mean, like, look, they've lost a wide they lost
one nothing to Aaron Nola, Like they've lost a wide variety.
They've lost a wide variety of games in here, and
like they've pitched like the Hunter Green and he was
Hunter Green against Brote they lost like three to two,
So they've lost a bunch of That was one that
maybe Sproke got left in a little bit too long
(14:59):
for his day.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
And like they talk about having multiple ways to win,
but the Mets are finding multiple ways to lose.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
They had had a good run with runners and scoring position.
That's kind of Backford. They're not hitting for power, like
they're not hitting extra base hits. Is becoming like they'll
hit the odd solo home run, but they're not really
hitting a ton of extra base hits. They got to
get like walk single single too.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
It sounds impossible. I mean, yeah, I'm familiar, and like.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
The bottom of that lineup is like Lindor hasn't been
good recently, Alonzo hasn't been good recently, which is going
to make it difficult for you to sequence for runs
when like the bottom of your order involves like Cedric
Mullins and Francis Suaforas with two busted hands, and you
know Mark Viento's and Marciande is sitting higher than that
in the lineup now. But and like Vento's baby, you know,
(15:45):
they've kind of settled in as like league averager spats
all in all, I checked.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
I think during the last part because I didn't realize
Ventos was was at league average.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
But what he's just about there, Yeah, like go hot
two weeks and just kind of cool it off, So.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
He's a touchover it or was touch over and it's
just you know, but.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
It's literally everything's gone wrong. The bullpen can't. Like they
threw Brooks Rali on a back to back yesterday, it
did not go well. And they brought Enrid Garrett and
it did not go well. And he's like the guys
that have been good for them this year.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
And I tell you, Francisco Alvarez with two busted hands,
even his last seven days is like a seven forty
two ops.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Yeah, he was really bad when he first came back.
He may have come back early. It was really bad.
But yeah, he's gotten a few more hits.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
It's it's absolutely wild the year that he's had. He's
got a one twenty ops plus. Oh yeah, we've talked
about him so much. Yeah, some of it was good,
but like I just what what what a wild run?
Speaker 2 (16:43):
Yeah? Like, they don't have a righty bench bad at all,
really too, which is kind of hurt them in late innings.
And they're like their trade deadline stuff when it's bad.
It's like the process was fine. They needed a center
fielder and three relievers. They traded for two of the
ten best relievers in baseball, and Tyler Rodgers and Ryan
Helsley and Rodgers has been fine, and Helsley has been
a gascan.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Yeah, Hellsley, and you know it's Hellsley both good. I mean,
he was one of the top saves guys in twenty
twenty four, but he always yeah, put guys on yeah
and pitched out of it and kind of that kind
of stuff. And yeah, it's just like it's a bad run. Yeah, right,
and he had these in Saint Louis.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
But yep, it's exactly all you're going to get, right,
So it's.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
A fifteen hits per nine kind of run. Yeah, nobody,
nobody bouts that.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
That's they don't catch the ball like their defenses. There's
like a lot of plays where if you hit the
ball into the corner, it's just going to take Brandon,
Nemo and Wansta a long time to get there. Just
you watch it like it just like you know, Nemo's
got the foot issues and won Soto's won Soto, but
like they're not a particularly good defensive team. And Lindor
(17:54):
slipped a little bit too, which kind of like he's
not making the plays all the players he would normally make,
like he's above average shortstop. But when you know you're
in between Jeff McNeil and Bark Bientos or Brett Baidy
and Mark Bientos or Brett Bady and Jeff McNeil. Like
you need a little more. You need Lindor to be
like Lindor. Yeah, it's just been a little bit of everything.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
Yeah, and you know you mentioned Mullins for the trade disappointments.
I mean, Mullens has been I don't know that that's surprising.
That was a little bit wishas right, it.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Was they had to get somebody. But you'd expect him
to be like a league average hitter, I think though,
which would have been a huge update over Tyrone Taylor
and Jose Siri for the first four months of the season. Right,
he just hasn't done that, right, And.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
He was league average in Baltimore, although he did a
lot of that in the first month of season, but
he's been a sixty five.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Yeah, it looks like the batsweet is completely gone there.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Yeah. Yeah, And I'm like, they.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Do all this and there's still like probably seventy five
percent to make the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
Yeah. Well, and we didn't mention and like you know, Senga,
we talked about Hi last time but like that back
in and mean, like the amount of pitching backups they've had.
And this was the concern about play Holmes too, right,
was like, I mean, if not that it was a
bad idea, not that it didn't work, but.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
In September fifteenth he had one hundred and forty innings
a three point seven five ERA baseball. I'll be like,
all right, that's fine, right.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
But it's also what he is right now is not
trust it. It's not that he's even bad necessarily, but
you just you don't have any he.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
Can he can't miss bats right now, like with the
sweeper and change up, like the bat missing pitches for
him earlier in the season.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Yeah, and then you get the defense that you just
talked about.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
He's walking more guys too, because guys aren't chasing it
or the change ups. You know, the breaking ball.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
I'm sure he's tired, right, Like he's one hundred forty
innings in.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
They're piggybacking and version, which will maybe ameliorate some of that.
But you know, Peterson seems to be wearing down too. Yeah,
Loan McLean looks fine. You think them one hundred fifty
innings this year, now, it looks like it.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
Then to watch he is a lot of fun to watch. Yeah,
you mentioned uh, since he dropped his series to Sacramento swept.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Yea, they swept and they got swept with like they
threw Green, Abbot and they threw like their good pagers.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
But you you wanted to give a special things to
to who was it?
Speaker 2 (20:24):
Games? Yes, Nick Kurtz also put one obliterated a baseball. Yeah,
like that's the thing, Like you go like, Abbot and
Green can be home run prone and you put them
in that park in late summer and the ball is
going to carry.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
Let's see, Lodolo got a loss. I don't think Abbot
because Abbot had a great start against in the series
against the Padres.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
Singer's right, I think he's going Singer. Yeah, we put
Singer in that part. That's what's going to happen to
rad A Singer. I mean, he pitches in Cincinnati, so
you should know.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
But Nick, Nick Martinez got a lost.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
He came in a relief.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Yeah, who it was? I was Green? Like you said Green, Yeah,
those those three.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Here's the thing. None of these teams are good.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
We keep saying this.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Yeah, the Mets are probably better than the Giants and
the Reds at this point, I think they have fairly
comparable schedules for the run in. That's like they both
play I mean, like the Mets play two playoff team,
but like the the Potteris are gonna try this week
because they're still chasing the Dodgers. The Cubs next week
are going to be setting their rotation. It's not that
(21:34):
they're not going to throw their you know, they're gonna
throw Managa and Horton or whoever. But they're gonna throw
them four to five innings and they're not going to
worry too much about those games. I think that's true
for like the diamond like the Diamonbacks that like finished
with the Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
The Diamonbacks have an incredibly tough.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Yeah, and the Giants finished with the Cardinals and Rockey.
They have to play the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers first,
so they do have nil, but they do have they
have to need to go five hundred. It's good that
you can win Christmas Days.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
Automatic is Arizona's best starter. Yeah, yeah, Eduardo Rodriguez has
been weirdly recently.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
I mean, if the Diamondbacks make it, which playoff game
is christ Matt starting because he's starting one of them?
Speaker 1 (22:20):
Yeah? Yeah, I so right. So we're talking about Cincinnati,
but the Diamondbacks have leapfrogged them by a half in.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
Right now, do you want to get into like the
Nuts and Bullets. The Mets have the tiebreaker over the
Giants and probably don't over the Diamondbacks and definitely don't
over the Rets.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
Okay, so yeah, like you said, the Diamonbacks have a
tough strength of schedule, I don't do you know, do
you have what the Mets are Patrick?
Speaker 3 (22:48):
The Mets have Let's see, the Mets have three with
the Cubs, three with the Padres, three with the Nets,
and three with the Marlins.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Yeah, they finished the series against the Marlins, which has
never been a problem for them in mid collapse ever before.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
I mean, those national ones should be there are three
three against Arizona. So I don't remember how.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
It's interdivision record, and the only way the Diamondbacks could
tie them is by being better. Like there's no scenario
where the Diamonbacks play well enough to make up those
games and don't have a better interdivision record.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Basically, okay, okay, well I have.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
To these are the things I have to know, Craig,
no idea.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
No, No, I'm not. It's it's just I don't know. Yeah, it's.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
This is I don't I don't want to go on
like a thing again. But it's just like this isn't
I don't want to have to care about this. This
is like this. These teams should not make them up.
I agree, Like they're five back of the no offense obviously,
but like the the they're five back of the padres.
Like there's a clear line of demarcation in there. I
(23:53):
shouldn't have to care. And like then you know, you
go to you go to the American League, and well
we can do that, but like you the American League,
and and Houston is in the last spot, and obviously
the Rangers and Guardians are kind of in that mix.
But Houston versus Boston versus New York separated by a
total of you know, two and a half games would
be really fun for the last two spots. But nope,
(24:15):
we don't. We don't get that anymore. We also have
a note here in our our runnown the Buys are
basically settled. That is true for the Ena. The Phillies
are four and a half up on the Dodgers. I
believe they do play each other, they get a three
game series. It's not over, but yeah, it's fairly settled.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
The Mariners are only three behind the Tigers.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
But do they do they play each other? No? The
Tigers have six against Cleveland, three in Boston, three Atlanta,
and the Mariners have, like weird, an easy but difficult
schedule because of the Rockies. They play three with the Rockies,
but they also have to play the Dodgers, Astros and Royals.
Royals should be out of it, like the are the
(25:00):
Rockies at home? Or Rockies or in Seattle? In Seattle? Okay?
So that is yeah, I mean it's it's not settled.
I would say for the Phillies and Dodgers just but
if the Dodgers sweep, then you have a thing a chance.
But if they don't sweep, even if they went to
a three, it's probably done. Yeah. The only.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
No, I'm just thinking you start you start doing these
things with like I'm somebody who truly believes that every
every round might My pet theory is that every round,
the highest seed remaining gets to pick who they play against.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
Uh, so they can game the.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
Matchup and decide which which which opponent suits there than
the best. But you really start thinking about this one
versus too, because what if the Mets, like it's a
three three game series. What if that sixth seed in
n n L like escapes against the third seed. You
would much rather face the Mets in the five round,
five game series than like the Pondres.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
Right, well, but didn't we have teams doing this in
the last like even the way it is without choosing
like that that you would much rather have been the
four or five seed than the three because the six
was decent or so. I don't remember exactly the setup,
but there were teams. Essentially, I wouldn't say you had
teams trying to be the sixth so they could face
(26:27):
the Central Central. That's what Yeah, that's what it was. Okay,
thank you, and that this.
Speaker 3 (26:32):
You know, my plan would avoid that. Basically, it'd say, okay, well,
the Central gets to pick. You know that you can't
just try and lose on purpose. You don't want these
little little feedback loops to.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
They have to make hotel reservations, I get it. They
have to make a certain number that every team has
the same number of players.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
Is making certainly sorry having to use their delta miles
to change.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
All right, shall we go to our next topic here?
Heading for the upper eighties living in the wild wild West.
The Mariners have one sole possession of the division nine
straight games.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Good look, you have to strive for five forty and
they're there.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Now, they're there.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
They may they're there. They did it.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
What is the Etsy Witch? Actually, I don't know what
this is about this. I know, some things just kind
of show up. Yeah, and you just they hired a witch.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
Uh, I don't I don't know. I don't know what
this is. You know, people made fun of them of
courts for Vladimir Spoont, but now we're hiring Etsy Witches.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
I mean, I absolutely believe that at least one major
League Baseball owner has attended a seance in their life.
Oh sure, absolutely believe that. Sure. I mean, you know,
didn't like they try to bury it David Ortiz Jersey
in the Yankee Stadium Foundation or something like.
Speaker 1 (28:09):
That sounds right something.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Baseball players are incredibly superstitious.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
Yeah, but like the witch managed to get Logan Gilbert
and George Kirby to pitch well for two games in
a row.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
I was gonna say Kirby was what like twelve up,
twelve down early last night he gave up a couple
of home runs.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
I mean you could just burn. Yeah, definitely sacrifice from
Fried Chicken, like in Major League or whatever it is.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
Right, Yeah, so yeah, I don't understand the yazy witch.
But that's fine. Yeah, let's not let's you know, it's
better off if we don't. Okay, So obviously we said
they still have a shot at the Bay three back
of Detroit.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
And they also might they might as well might miss
the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
I was going to say that way too. Yeah, yeah,
I know that. I was asked this on Blue Sky
and I answered it, and I said on the pod
like I was like, oh, I think the Mariners will
win more than Houston, but not catch them in the division.
Well yeah, I was like, it's a lot of ground
to make up and not that much time, and they've
done it in way less time.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
This is this is we are creaming once again towards
the top three teams in this division, winning eighty nine,
eighty eight, eighty seven games. I don't know what order
it's going to be, but that's what's going to happen.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
Yeah, Texas has you know, mostly another one nine in
a row, but they've continued to win.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
Yeah, I mean they won you out of three. It's
a mount's like, and.
Speaker 1 (29:31):
They beat Milwaukee, they won't. They swept walks like they're beating.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
I do have to say my one, I had a
lot of takeaway from that serious man, like they should
make Bruce Bocie walk out to make the pitching changes.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
I saw that too.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
He was Yeah, yeah, I tried to get my dad
to go on a walk this weekend. Yeah, like didn't
it didn't end happening. I'm like, that's probably what.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
It would have looked like.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
I mean, I get it, man, those years catching catch
up you in your seventies.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
But yeah, my dad's eighty five. So yeah, Houston is
currently lined up to go to Seattle in the wild
card round. Yeah, if it's the if it's the three six,
that's what will happen.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
Right, And they're probably those two of the eight Aos
teams are probably playing each other. I think the Yankees
and Socks are probably gonna be the four or five. Like,
stuff can still happen, but.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
I think it would be very funny for the Mariners
to have to face. The Mariners have had two playoff
seasons since.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
You know, in two thousand and one, and they have
it be the same team and both of them would
be very pretty fun.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Well, they played the Blue Jays, right.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Oh, they played the Blue Jays.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
They didn't play in Seattle for the like having to
host the only two series you hosted the same team
but basically the same roster.
Speaker 1 (30:42):
Yeah they do.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
They don't. They don't have Robbie Ray to bring in
this time.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
That's true. Robbie Ray is good now, yes, yeah, which
is why they don't happen to bring Well, that's not
actually true. Who did they get back in that? Who
do they get back in in that deal? Oh? Right? Miss?
As Patrick mentioned, the Maners do also play the Astros
(31:06):
down the stretch here.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
And the Rangers still play the Astros too, right.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
I why did the Mariner's schedule up? So?
Speaker 2 (31:12):
I don't I think everybody still plays each other?
Speaker 1 (31:16):
Oh the schedulers actually the Rangers the Astros three times, yeah,
literally starting So this is.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
Like, yeah, this is one of those where like the
Mariners are the light favorite because they're ahead right now,
but also there's like playoff oddswings game to game. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Yeah, uh in Texas. So they said to two back
Cleveland two and a half back. They are nine and one.
It's not nine in a row, but they are.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Nine and one in their last ten, uh say, watching
them like this weekend, Like I know we've talked about
how they're like rowdy. Telez is just like hitting it
doesn't make unreal. Mike Hellman, Michael Oman. Yeah, yeah, they
ma had a Freeman come up and like, is that Tyler.
(32:02):
That's not Tyler. Freeman is the wrong body type. It's
Colin Freeman, Cody, Cody, Cody, whatever the sty like they
brought in his Eigil Durant as a pinch runner and
then he played right field and second base in the
same game. Like it's just I mean, Wyat Langford is
like looks good and he did beat them, but like
(32:23):
josh A. Smith is having a great season, but he's
still hitting lead off for them because he's the best
of the.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
He's another guy who had a great April. Yeah, he's
been okay since I feel like he's been better than okay.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
It's like a sixth ninety ohs Like it's not.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
Yeah, yeah, it's the one on nine plus seven fourteen right.
Speaker 2 (32:43):
Now, he had a good weekend, so yeah, got up
to I.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
Don't know, for a guy who can play all over.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
No, it's fine.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
He's a very valuable player, right.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
You don't want him really being your leadoff hitter and
like paming pencilman every day.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
But well, but they also were eating off Marcus Semion,
so like it might actually be an improvement.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
And the picture is good, but are they getting secret
back I believe so.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
Yeah, that would be.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Like the ground looked good, Jacob Lats looked good for
some reason.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
Lat's I mean, Lat says a two eight five right,
lot of that in relief, but he started seven games.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Yeah, and it's Liker.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
Meryl Kelly has been really good.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
Meryl Kelly is really good. He's been Meryl Kelly, but
he's been like.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
Version they needed it.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
Yeah, and they actually have Jack Lighter has been all
right recently, but like I don't we're talking about like
a team that's like eight games over five hundred or whatever,
so whatever.
Speaker 1 (33:44):
Yeah, yeah, and andore.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
And look they've had a good like they've gotten what
do they call they call them the little rascals. I
guess it is the Yeah, that's what they're calling and
Freeman and yeah, old so fair enough that man had
a black and white TV in his house growing up.
Speaker 1 (34:07):
I can't I can't remember why. But we showed my
kids the nineties movie and they liked it, and I
was kind of disappointed it wasn't. Yeah, yeah, kind of sorry.
I'm sorry to interrupted that didn't share. Maybe the maybe
the Rangers will also be a little disappointed. We don't know.
(34:28):
Maybe it works out that way. Do we have anything
else on the they are?
Speaker 2 (34:34):
It's funny because like if it still feels like it
should be a fraud watch and like you have two
teams that are like nine and one in the last Yeah, yeah,
but it still does. I knew the Marriagers were playing well,
but also like I don't, Well, it's a games.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Yeah, a lot of scraping it together, a lot a
lot of extra innings that were too many innings, a
lot of a lot of runners stranded, you know, a
lot of zombie runners stranded.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
You can't feel too good about you team.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
Yeah, they play like that. Then they play like a
thirteen in game in there, so twelve yeah.
Speaker 3 (35:04):
Back to back, and you're like, if you're winning a
game in the thirteenth. That means you didn't do it
in the tenth or eleventh or twelfth, And yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
Right, I think they neither neither team scored in the
tenth and they both scored once in the eleventh and
either I think I turned it off at some point
because I met there's only so much Cardinals Mariners ext
running baseball I can't watch. Yeah, that was Alis. That
was a Leo Revas.
Speaker 1 (35:24):
Yes, right, there was Revas.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
And then yeah, I mean it's like it's it's funny
like if you're a fan of a team outside of
like the Brewers, I guess, and maybe the Phillies at
this point. The Phillies fans are never really happy, Like
who's like even Jays fans for getting annoyed at their
team and they're like the number one seed and probably
(35:46):
going to be the number one seed.
Speaker 1 (35:48):
Yeah, I mean, look, I can't tell you Dodgers fans
are happy. I will say five of six wins Field.
They because they swept the Rockies and got to two
of three.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
And but I mean I've watched all those games. It's
been terrible games, I guess.
Speaker 1 (36:00):
Just yeah, they have like showed up just two nights
in a row like that again. So right months he's
back Edmund's back.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
He got hit in the head like the media, Yeah,
he got.
Speaker 1 (36:14):
Hit in the hand and then hitting the head back
to back games. Uh, it's been a rough go for
ye Max. He said the knee injury where his knee
flex backwards then don an oblique injury because I believe
I don't know if we talked about this here, but
I believe it's because his body is just square.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
Yeah, like the Keith Hernandez like quote like you can't
pull fat well it was.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
He said something about like his rib cage being like
weirdly close to his.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Hips because I believe looking at him, he doesn't have a.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
Lot of mid like he has a lot of insection,
but not a lot of mentality in the midriff. And uh,
like I guess that that leads to potentially, I guess
obleique injuries or something. So uh, I don't I don't know.
But but the lineup is they continue to put Michael
Confordo in it, which is upsetting to some of us,
(37:05):
but like they they played him, they let him hit
versus lefty in the game they ended up losing without
Why is outs calling the roster. If that's a ques
that's what's happening.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
Like, I don't Ryan Ward is having the greatest triple A.
Speaker 1 (37:20):
Yeah. Look, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna be like
a like a Ryan Ward Truther. I don't think Ryan
Ward is like the answer here, But.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
You don't think it's having the greatest season in the
history of triple.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
Tommy Tommy Edmond is back and you can play pahes
and Oscar Ti. Oscar had three homers in two games
at one point, at a couple hits, you know, yesterday.
I think like there's some rounding into four. Right. The
pitching has generally been pretty good, at least the starting pitching.
H Let's not get into Tanner Scott. But I don't
(37:55):
know that that's the answer, but I could see the Again,
this goes back to why I kept saying I think
they have the highest ceiling. I think they might like.
Speaker 2 (38:02):
The other thing is they don't go into the playoff
series with Snell, Glass and Otani exactly.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
Yeah, and you you solve some relief problems by putting
in Sheahan and relief, right, like.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
You get the pen, right, you're just gonna use g
Gardo Henriquez and Jack Dryer. I guess a lot more
like I mean, right, like, would you be shocked? Turns out, well,
they'm sure they might make.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
Yeah, I assume he'll be back. I think there's a
decent chance he's on the the playoff roster. I I
don't know what you do with Yates and Scott basically,
but yeah, anyway, let's go to our next stept except segment,
excuse me around the horn, third segment. This time we
got some call ups.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
This is still fun to me.
Speaker 1 (38:56):
This is team's going for it. I enjoyed this. We
got two call ups, the first being tray you Savage
ye the Blue Jays, and I thought they might just
shove him in the bullpen starting. No, he's starting. He's
starting today, right.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
Yeah, you're starting to Trey Savage against Joe Boyle. Have
fun with that one.
Speaker 1 (39:15):
Well, honestly, that's not like you say, have fun with
that one, but like it's.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Kind of I mean, it's fun if you're a if
you're a hitter with some knowledge of the strike zone,
you're probably gonna have a good day.
Speaker 1 (39:27):
But can you Savage not filled his own there's a
lot of chase.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
Yeah, it's a lot of chase. It's tough because because
he rose so quickly, he didn't really spend a lot
of time at any particular level. But like, outside of
low Way, he has walked more than a few guys,
like six per nine, well five p nine but uh
(39:52):
but yeah, like he was very clearly a tear below
Burns and Smith last year, but like he was the
third guy, and they.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Also they started him in right this year the fourth level,
but he probably shouldn't.
Speaker 2 (40:09):
I think some of that is they were doing some
pitch mixed stuff. I think they just wanted to make
camp and like he spent a fair amount of time there.
He made seven starts, but he's moved very quickly since then.
He's gonna miss bats. It's just like, is he going
to get enough chase where the balance between missing bats
and putting guys on is acceptable? But yeah, they got
(40:33):
to go for it here.
Speaker 1 (40:33):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
I think he'll probably pitch in the pen out of
the in the playoffs, but you know, they need a starter.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
I do apologize for not knowing the Are they just
trying to give someone an extra everyone like push everyone
back a day or like, I don't their starters are
all healthy.
Speaker 2 (40:50):
Starters are all healthy. I don't this might just be
there giving some extra rest.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, and again it's fun to inject
someone with that kind of upside into into the race. Here.
Doing against the Rays is honestly not a not a
bad idea in terms of you know, I know they've
been fine, but uh, yeah, I know that's fine.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
And then no, he has no workload restrictions, so yeah, I.
Speaker 1 (41:21):
Know it was right. I heard them say that as well.
A ton of the start just there's a showing six
man rotation to the I guess I already had a six.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
Yeah, I assume somebody there hasn't did that. No, they
bower has been bad lately. Yeah, it just finally blower
in the bullpen might be useful. But yeah, yes, that
it's just like a little bit of like Jonah Tong
symbol signal here, Like he's dead over the top. It's
(41:54):
a huge carry fastball, he's got a good split. He
does actually have stuff that moves. It doesn't really move
close by, but he does have breaking balls theoretically. But yeah,
but he's getting he's getting a ton of chase in
triple A. That's gonna have to continue in the majors,
like the zone Raund His fastball isn't bad. It's a
(42:15):
good pastball and it's gonna miss bats in the zone.
But like with Tong, it's like, is he going to
get enough chase that you know he can still pop
it in the zone and you guys are if they're
going to zone his fastball again, it's a little bit
deeper arsenal, but we'll see.
Speaker 1 (42:29):
Well and again you're gonna get you know, Tom was
very exciting for a few starts, and then you're gonna
get ones where either the book is out or they
just have if he doesn't have quite what he needs
that day, like it can get it can probably get
rough quickly elsewhere. The Giants are calling up Bryce Eldridge.
Speaker 2 (42:50):
Yeah, and.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
Just last last night and he said, why, like what
happened Tom Smith on a play that was challenge ultimately
held stretched for a ball and hurt himself.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
Yeah it was.
Speaker 1 (43:05):
It was quite a nice play by him. But so
they played Wilmer Flores the next the rest.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
Of that you can play a first base, yeah.
Speaker 1 (43:14):
Yeah, and uh but they're going I like this from
the Giants too, I mean I like this from both sides.
Speaker 2 (43:19):
Like Tonic, Like, I know Dom has been pretty good
for them, honestly, but who Dom's pretty good for them honestly.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
Yeah, but he's just hurt.
Speaker 2 (43:28):
I know he's just hurt. But I'm like, there's like,
I know Eldridge is miss timed this year too, Like
it feels like they probably should have pulled the trigger
on Eldridge a little bit earlier.
Speaker 1 (43:36):
Could certainly use a little more Don Smith could have.
Speaker 2 (43:41):
Well, no, because they have Wilmer Flores Raphael Devers too,
Like they just have too many cornerbacks. But Chapman assuming
Chapman like has an entirely intact hand who are playing
at third base every day.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
But well we'll get to that.
Speaker 2 (43:58):
We did that in a minute. Yeah, Like Elder Eldridge
has among the best raw power in the miners. He's
like corner only but if you want the the he
has a forty two damage rate per robb Ars damage
rate metric, which is anything over thirty is very high,
(44:19):
and he has forty two. Like, like he makes enough
contact in the zone. It's not great. He's a good
approach huge, right, He's huge, Like he's got huge lever,
so he's gonna never run great zone contact rates. Uh
the problem. Look, you're gonna get take what you get here.
He's running almost fifty percent with against secondaries in triple A,
(44:42):
so that might be a little bit of a rough
adjustment for him. Though he does miss Nobuilo Chrismasis and
his change up this week, so he's got that.
Speaker 1 (44:51):
He's six seven.
Speaker 2 (44:52):
Yeah, he's a big he's a big guy, big guy,
big swing.
Speaker 1 (44:55):
Yeah, relatively local to me, Fairfax, Virginia. Yep.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
Oh, he's like he's running a one o nine ninetieth
in one fifteen maxim Triple A this year, like.
Speaker 1 (45:06):
One nine ninetieth.
Speaker 2 (45:07):
Yeah, yeah, that's hits the ball very hard, bananas. Yeah,
it's not super optimized. But he also pits the ball right.
Speaker 1 (45:16):
But I'm gonna like, this is this is gonna this
is gonna reflect poorly and I don't mean it too
but like check cad Leon. Cad Leon has a forty
two had a forty two ops plus major.
Speaker 2 (45:32):
No, it can go it can go bad. But it's
also like it's two weeks as well.
Speaker 1 (45:39):
Again, I think they should do this. The other option
is like all all the time, and also yeah, I
think you give it a run. You're you're, you're, you're
not even in the playoffs, right, so go for it
right now. I think it's the right move. And I thought, honestly,
I thought it was the right move for the Royals
to call it tagaloon. Their their outfield was terrible, but like,
(45:59):
it can go south that way, especially in a small stint.
But I think also it probably serves him better for night.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
They can protect him, like he doesn't have to start
against the Duardo Rodriguez right, like that, right, and it.
Speaker 1 (46:11):
Serves him better for next year to get some of
this experience and to see what it's about right in
the in the majors, it's a it's a fair amount
of pressure to be thrown into, you.
Speaker 2 (46:20):
Know, were somebody has to be there to choke Drew
Gilbert and the dugout when he asked for it.
Speaker 1 (46:25):
So what I don't know, man, Yeah, Matt Chapman can't
because his hands are hurt. Yeah, so let's go to that,
we go to some injuries. Let's stick in San Francisco. Uh,
Matt Chapman. There's an article he made he made a play.
I still don't I watch multiple replays, I still don't
know how he made Yeah, the dive alone was incredible,
(46:47):
but to get up and fire a bullet to second
on it and get it out was unreal, absolutely incredible.
He it apparently gave him a quarter sized hole in
his hands in his hand. Excuse me that that is
per the San Francisco Chronicle and Susan Slusser.
Speaker 2 (47:05):
How do you do that? Exactly?
Speaker 1 (47:07):
Like? What did he hit?
Speaker 2 (47:08):
Like there's like a scrape?
Speaker 1 (47:11):
Well, hole has to be dramatic, right, yeah, like.
Speaker 2 (47:15):
You would think like did you fall on a rock?
Speaker 1 (47:17):
Like what? Yeah? So right, this and this is what
the the article. The first sentence of this article is
Matt Chapman is not happy with the state of the
dirt at orat Fule Park. Uh it is. He said,
the infield is so hard it just keeps ripping open,
pointing to his hand. Yeah, and he said, it's all
I'm always worried it's going to happen again, and it's
(47:38):
starting to affect the way I play defense.
Speaker 2 (47:40):
There was one play I think I best at you
about it, Like it was like a weird bounce or
something like it hit the dirt and just like this,
it's like hitting a brick wall the way the ball
bounced off of it, like it really.
Speaker 1 (47:54):
Dry and hard, and like this article is is pretty
wild because Sluster talks to the head groundskeeper, Greg Elliott,
and he's basically like, he says, I feel bad. I
feel for Matt. I don't want that to happen to him.
(48:15):
And he said, like Matt was open with his feedback
and that's that's great or whatever. He said, Uh, these
guys are professional athletes. They demand excellence and they demand consistency,
and when we struggle to get there, it's good to
get some communication. But he also basically said, it's the
(48:37):
business model of all the events that happen at the park.
Speaker 2 (48:42):
I guess they put like the sound system set up
for the concerts, like right where third base is or
something like that.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
Yeah, he he said. So, Sluster says the main culprit
for the hard surface is is the seven concerts and
other on field events such as the recent BAFC game
that the Giant told at Oracle Park. Uh, they help
the bottom line, but it impacts the field. A delay tower,
(49:09):
which positions speakers to ensure even for concert goers, was
positioned right at Chapman's nightly spot. You know, I don't
and and look I feel bad for the groundskeeper. It's
I'm sure it's a lot to deal with. At the
same time, like that is the job water it down?
Speaker 2 (49:30):
Like if it's you don't have to have like grave
digger tearing up the infield seven times a year either
or whatever, Right, I can't.
Speaker 1 (49:37):
I mean, I'm sure it helps the bottom line.
Speaker 2 (49:39):
But it also sounds like they own they own the state.
They privately built the stadium too, right, so like that's
I get that it's like pure profit for them and
things like that.
Speaker 1 (49:48):
Ironically enough, they're both both Elliott and Chapman are pining
for the A's set up, and so Chapman basically said
this never happened at the Coliseum. They managed it. I
don't think they were getting seven.
Speaker 2 (50:02):
Concerts in swift concerts at the at the Coliseum.
Speaker 1 (50:06):
But Elliott, for his part, said he wants the kind
of watering system that the A's are using at Sutter
Health Ballpark the Triple A Stadium too, isn't it, Yes,
it is. The Brewers are also using this. Apparently it
waters the surface from underneath. Shout out to the people
(50:32):
that uh he says, that's the evolution of the baseball surface.
So that's where we're going. But it's just, you know,
Chapman said, Oakland was fine. In my opinion, the infield
just needs some extra attention. He's basically like, yeah, there's
some stuff going on, but honestly, just take care of this, right,
he said, I've I've torn my hand open six or
(50:53):
seven times now. Yeah, I'm look, these guys are used
to a lot and and demand a lot and whatever,
and sometimes it's ridiculous. I think, not tearing my hand
open when I dive defensively maybe maybe fairly reasonable. Yeah,
And you know, Allie says, you don't want to water
(51:14):
theven field too much. It gets like jello, is what
he said. But like, okay, but you should then be
able to dry it out or whatever. I don't know.
It seems to be drying out very quick, so so
figure that out. So we have not chapping with a
hole in his hand, obviously going to impact his hitting,
one would think as well. Anthony bolpe Tour a labrum
(51:36):
or has had a laborum tear. I don't know, are
we are we just finding this out? Is it kind
of convenient to explain the bad season? Why play through
a laborum tear? The whole season.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
You know, I guess that the other option is Oswell Parazza, but.
Speaker 1 (51:53):
Well he's in well, I guess not anymore, right, he's
in Anaheim.
Speaker 2 (51:57):
Well yeah, I mean at the time, I don't know
when he towards laborum exactly.
Speaker 1 (52:00):
Yeah, right, so booms, he's bad defensively and bad offensively.
So like, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (52:07):
Yeah, he had a partial labor and tear that I
think they felt like they felt like was an old injury.
Really it was just more aggravating it and swelling of it.
Once that got out of there, it was good to go.
He's aggravated it a couple of times, Sunday being one
of them. In May, he described the results of the
MRI as good news, saying at the time vulpag shoulder
(52:29):
was definitely a little cranky. So I guess, you know,
if it if it looks good but then gets like
this is just basically.
Speaker 1 (52:36):
Reinjury, right, Like it didn't heal all the way he
heard it again, It didn't feel all the way he
heard it again.
Speaker 3 (52:42):
This isn't like I don't think this is just like
a thing they ignored for four months. I think it's
just it didn't like he just kept hurting it. So,
you know, it's fun to make fun of people for
ignoring injuries, but I think this is just you know,
Occam's razors that he just can't get healthy this year,
(53:02):
and maybe they should have given him more time, given
that he's Anthony Bolpey.
Speaker 1 (53:07):
Let him get They didn't have anyone because if you
if you give him the time or whatever, even if
you have the opportunity to like do something that's trade
deadline potentially to patch that, right, but if you just
played through it, then you don't. Well, they got cap
of hero, which they should have just used common yeah right,
(53:27):
oh right, yeah, so just right, Yeah, m Jose Altuve
has a foot injury. I had not seen this, so
I don't Yeah, he missed a couple of games. I think.
Speaker 3 (53:37):
I don't think it's serious enough for him to hit
the eye l but he you know, then every game
counts at this point. He he missed yesterday's game and
I think that's it so far.
Speaker 1 (53:51):
And he I think he's well. And then he pinch
hit once last week too, so he's kind of in
and out.
Speaker 3 (54:00):
They get they kind of I think they pulled him
out early at certain games as well, So it's just
kind of management.
Speaker 1 (54:07):
Mhm. Speaking of management, the Brewers are going to have
to manage their rotation a little bit. Jose Kintana left
after four innings against the Cardinals. He has a calf injury.
He's in a boot and getting an MRI. Yeah, that
sounds like I don't know. I don't know that it
matters what the result is. The season is done, probably
including the postseason. Milwaukee is I mean, look, you still
(54:32):
even their top four Palt Priester, Woodruff and Mazarowski is
just fine. Yeah, but they are managing a lot of
stuff in the in the injuries, between the bullpen and
and the rotation. Right now, DL Hall is on the
IL still, Nick Meers is on the IL. Trevor McGill
is on the IL. Shelby Miller, who they traded for,
(54:55):
is on the i L. It's a lot. Logan Henderson
one of their You know, I'm not going to count
Jordan Montgomery. He's there, but I'm not here. I don't know,
what do you what do you guys think? Eric Fetty
is already on this roster.
Speaker 2 (55:09):
Not thrilled. Logan Hendris is maintaining his prospect eligibility.
Speaker 1 (55:11):
But so yeah, yeah, I mean like Chad Patrick is
Tad Patrick. I mean, look, they have they have options.
Tobias Myers issar, Chad Patrick is up, Eric Fetti is there.
Speaker 2 (55:24):
Robert Gasser is like still like sort of rehabbing from
TJ but might be available if they need, Like they
have guys like it's not they have four playoff starters,
so it's like whatever. But how they sort the ballpen
out I don't quite now yet.
Speaker 1 (55:40):
Yeah. Yeah, And and I wasn't Grant Anderson on the isle.
I think he just came off. So they've just been
cycling through through a lot of guys at this point.
And it's been a a little bit rough lately. Obviously
swept by.
Speaker 2 (55:54):
The Yeah, like they've basically played five hundred baseball since
the long winning streak. But you get to do that
for a.
Speaker 1 (56:00):
Long winn oh, which is absolutely fine. I mean, yeah,
it's it's just uh one, two or three in Saint Louis.
I thought they had lost. One of those they came
back and one they won nine days. One of those games.
Speaker 2 (56:12):
If they lose in the divisional round, there'll be a
lot of like, oh, they peaked too early, kind of
stuff when they probably just had a lot of good
sequencing stuff happened to them, which they have all year.
Speaker 1 (56:21):
So yeah, and and again I don't want to that
is true. They also do a lot of those those
little things that make those moments matter more. Right, they
get two runs out of something instead of one, or
one run instead of zero because they did some little thing.
But but yeah, when sometimes you don't get the opportunity
to do those little things, and then it doesn't matter
(56:43):
as much. We mentioned Sean and I am moving to
the pen. Uh, it doesn't like.
Speaker 2 (56:48):
I guess he's piggyback. I don't like if he's in
the bullpen or gonna. I think they're gonna, they gotta
win these games, but I could see them turning towards
something like this, something like pitching chaos in the playoffs
if they make it, you know, behind behind Nolan McLean,
who's like going to be their game one starter, I
(57:10):
think at this point, and then they're gonna they're gonna
go from there. You might say, a homesman, I have
piggyback Sega Peterson piggybacks.
Speaker 1 (57:19):
What they do is coming back.
Speaker 2 (57:21):
He made if she made a rehab start over the
weekend or Friday after throwing a pen there, so he
might pitch Thursday.
Speaker 1 (57:31):
Okay, yeah, it looks it looked good. He looks he
looked good.
Speaker 2 (57:36):
But he was topping out of like ninety four too.
So I think had one hundred percent with Way on
a split in triple A, which is probably what's going
to happen against I don't I don't think we have
any more.
Speaker 1 (57:47):
I feel like he's providing a service, honestly. Yeah, like
this is what you have to look forward to. Yeah, yeah,
I I mean, look, the thing is, it seems dire
and stuff like it's a bunch of multiinating guys that
can do something.
Speaker 2 (58:04):
You know, you should be like, I don't know if
the manager to make this work.
Speaker 1 (58:10):
But it's not like crazy to me to think Sean
and Iah.
Speaker 2 (58:14):
In a three inning he looks good at three innings
at a time this year.
Speaker 1 (58:19):
Yeah, uh, Roki Sasaki we have here in the rundown
as a maybe I don't think so he was throwing
ninety nine again, Sure it was okay, I mean it
was both his I think he struck out eight in
four innings or something like that. He it was both
like his best start in a maybe ever in the
(58:43):
in the US, but like uh, or in the majors,
but not in the majors. He's reh having as part
of the Dodgers, let's say. But you know, it's still
it's ninety nine, but it needs to be ninety nine
because it's not the shape of the fastball is still
not great. He you know, we talked about it. I
think he's throwing the two seamer a little bit. We'll see, Yeah,
(59:06):
I don't think he's gonna pitch with probably the rest
of the way though. Uh. And then lastly, every year
coda in the news a little bit, Pat Murphy noting
that we projected the Brewers for eighty wins. Yeah, yeah,
this is one.
Speaker 3 (59:21):
This is just like it's it's the Dolphins are Champagne
like it's is a tradition now and it's fine to
be part of that tradition.
Speaker 1 (59:28):
It's not. It's look and it tells you we don't
put our thumb on the scale right like this is
that we would it would We would love to avoid this,
but it is what it is. That's what the the
number that the the system spits out, the model spits out,
and uh, Milwaukee gets to be motivated. I guess by it.
Speaker 3 (59:49):
Yeah yeah, and it's a boring motivation, but it's what
they use. Like, yeah, what what were we wrong about?
Speaker 1 (59:56):
Right? Bryce Train? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (59:58):
Boy, how shameful that we all got Bryce Draying wrong?
You know, Brandon Woodruff coming back like you know, it's.
Speaker 1 (01:00:07):
Look it was wrong and look South Raylick out we
did this straight run. They they it's it's up and
down the lineup. There's a number of spots that they're
getting according to our projections, massive overperformance. Again, there were
reasons to buy into uh, you know, people thought heading
(01:00:27):
into twenty twenty four, Bryce Tering was going to take
a step and then people thought and he didn't really,
but well I guess he he was better. I don't
want to say he didn't really, but like it wasn't
what people thought. And he's doing that this year. South
Raylick is doing that this year. There's a number of guys,
but those are also the same mistakes that like mentally
(01:00:50):
we we think guys are going to take a step
and they don't write and go look at Cabrian Hayes
or whatever. Right, he had that great like six weeks
one year end ending the year and everyone thought, oh,
he knows how to he knows how to lift the ball.
Now here's the next step, and the projection system said no,
because we don't. It doesn't care, doesn't know. He learned
he quote unquote learned how to lift and it turns
(01:01:10):
out he didn't. So it's those kind of things can
always cut both ways. I don't know anything else for you, guys.
All right, let's take a break. We'll come back with
the rest of the show. Welcome back to episode four
(01:01:50):
ninety one of five and five. We're on our fourth segment.
We're bringing back what to Watch. We're each picking a
specific game, not a series. We're at the tail end
of the season. I think it's an appropriate time to
do a little what to watch here, Patrick, I would
like you to start and defenders choice.
Speaker 3 (01:02:10):
All right, So I chose the Diamondbacks Giants game of
September seventeenth, the final three game series. It's an important series,
and it will be important because the Mets are playing
the Padres and might not win all three of those games.
And if that's the case, then one of these two
teams who are both basically the team, you know, assuming
somebody wins two of those like they'll be back in it.
(01:02:33):
The pitching matchups are not necessarily ideal.
Speaker 2 (01:02:37):
Right Matt through Sunday. So he's not going to go
on this series?
Speaker 3 (01:02:40):
Yeah yeah, So so I chose rather than Edward Rader
is TVA I chose. I chose Verlander and fought it's
Verlander actually has been he's been lately. Three three quality
starts and the one he last four The last one
(01:03:01):
was a five inning, ten strikeout, four walk apparents he
has been walking batters recently, but but he's been fine.
Speaker 1 (01:03:08):
Fun has not been fine. Fun. Just this is what
he is. The rest of the year, You're not watching
a Diamondbacks game looking for a pitching cool So I
think this is it's gonna be what it is on
the tin.
Speaker 2 (01:03:20):
This is an honest, uh microcosm of this and ol
playoff race. Yes, it's against Brandon five and probably like
the rubber game of an important series.
Speaker 1 (01:03:31):
Yeah yeah, it's gonna be desperate, it's gonna be sloppy, yep,
and it'll come down to something like Yep, you're not
wrong about the Diamondbacks, Patrick, but I do want to
know it, Like obviously.
Speaker 2 (01:03:40):
We we kind of Andrew frank as their closer, Craig.
Speaker 1 (01:03:43):
I understand, I understand, but I'm just saying we we
we both jokingly and earnestly bring up the Bill and
he's been very good. Yes, but Eduardo Rodriguez his last
three starts, six innings, one earned run across all three starts. Yeah,
and it has pulled his RA down below five. Yes,
(01:04:04):
I'm not saying you had a good season, but you're
saying like you don't. He's he's getting some results. Now.
Speaker 3 (01:04:12):
We're also not getting Ryan Nelson in this series, which
is the like, the other good starter they've had this year.
Speaker 1 (01:04:17):
So Zach Allen has been also better ish lately. Like
this is the reason why they're still in is because
their pitching is now basically barely been.
Speaker 2 (01:04:29):
Lost.
Speaker 1 (01:04:31):
They've been playing five hundred ball and that's been enough.
Speaker 3 (01:04:34):
Yes, I think they're six of the last ten. But yeah,
this is not good baseball. But this is the sort
of September baseball that you you kind of want.
Speaker 1 (01:04:42):
So I don't know if that's true about Slade Chacone.
Speaker 2 (01:04:44):
And Jeff is even better than Brandon five.
Speaker 1 (01:04:48):
Well, he's got a four four e R.
Speaker 2 (01:04:50):
He's been better than Brandon five.
Speaker 1 (01:04:52):
Yeah, exactly, striking out seven. He gave up seven runs
in a start recently, I mean.
Speaker 2 (01:05:01):
Before that.
Speaker 1 (01:05:02):
So yeah, uh, Jeff, do you want I can go?
I guess I don't let to Uh, I'll let you
close it out. I am going to be a homer.
Speaker 2 (01:05:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:05:12):
Someone had to pick this, and it didn't seem like
Jeff was going to pick it. So I'm I'm doing it.
Dodgers Phillies, Christopher Sanchez or shoheo Tony. That's tomorrow or
it might be today by the time you listen to
this September sixteenth. It's a big it's a big series.
As we noted, they're they're going to it could keep
(01:05:34):
the second buy in play if the Dodgers win all
these games. But that's just a great matchup. I mean,
Sanchez has been so good. Also, like I don't know,
the Phillies keep winning. They are very banged up. They are,
I know we talked about like the entire left side
of their infield is that it's just Auto Kemp and
(01:05:57):
Mundo Sosa, and then Mundo Sosa is a little banged up. Yes,
are you excited?
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
Are you excited to see Michael confordo bad against Christopher Sanchez.
Speaker 1 (01:06:08):
He if he starts against the lefty, I'm gonna lose
my mind. Jeffrey, I would like you to take a
guess at some of the names on the Phillies bench
right now.
Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
I just played, like West is West, and Wilson there.
Speaker 1 (01:06:23):
Wilson is there. I'll give you. I'm gonna give you
one of them because one of the this is per
Rosser resource Nick platoon is one of the bench members.
Speaker 2 (01:06:34):
So Western, Wilson camp and so so.
Speaker 1 (01:06:39):
Starting.
Speaker 2 (01:06:40):
I know, I don't. I'm going through in my head,
like who's Bader starting, bad starting or on the beach?
Speaker 1 (01:06:49):
Vaters is in the lineup? They don't even have him platoony.
Speaker 2 (01:06:54):
Yeah, no, I mean fair enough, Brandon Marsh.
Speaker 1 (01:07:00):
Marsha Marsh's is starting. He's along side of the platoon.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
Oh, okay, fair enough.
Speaker 1 (01:07:08):
So you've named the short sides of the platoon thus far. Yeah,
right now you have. I'm going to give you a
little another hint. A backup backup catchers.
Speaker 2 (01:07:16):
Back up catcher. Three backup catchers in the Phillis.
Speaker 1 (01:07:23):
Oh you shouldn't, I mean beamed up. They're the usual ones.
Speaker 2 (01:07:27):
What's his name is just stubs back? Yes, Stubbs is
back for the back for the September roster expansion.
Speaker 1 (01:07:33):
Yeah, correct, Stubbs is back and then a long time
prospects catching.
Speaker 2 (01:07:38):
They traded Dalo Duran, so it's gotta be the other one.
Speaker 1 (01:07:41):
Yes, okay, this is great radio. So it is Rapel
Marshawn Marshall. The name that really made me want to
do this to you is in field outfielder Donovan Walton.
Speaker 2 (01:07:52):
Oh yeah, Donny Walton's up. That's what I forgot about.
That's like a big deal in our in our group chat.
Speaker 1 (01:07:56):
Because for well yeah, yeah, uh okay, let's go to.
Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
Your We're running out of Tiger's getaway days. We got
a good one Tiger's Guardians, so it's not there's some playoffs.
But also we can see if Trek Schoogle's ribcage is still.
Speaker 1 (01:08:15):
Yeah, I don't understand how he's just making.
Speaker 2 (01:08:18):
His next just making his next start on Thursday. Ye,
he's built different getaway day on Thursday, if you really
want to get away. We do have a Sickos pick.
It's Uri Perez against Kyle Freeland. In course, Euryprez can
be a little home run prone despite throwing one hundred
miles an hour if you put him in course against
Kyle Freeland.
Speaker 1 (01:08:39):
Watch the Magic Rockies are on the other side of it.
Speaker 2 (01:08:43):
That's why it's sickos.
Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
That's why it's all right, that's a game, Patrick game.
I'm honestly not sure how it's gonna go.
Speaker 2 (01:08:51):
Well, it's always we have two readers submitted games in
the queue that you just ignored.
Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
To Well, well, it's just one. I think it's He's.
Speaker 3 (01:09:00):
I think it was the same same listener who offered
a supplemental But I need to I need to work
with it a little longer. He games are hard to make,
I will say, And I think it was a game
based on like do you know which team is played
this player is playing for?
Speaker 1 (01:09:14):
Who he played for? Is is a NBA on T
T Classics? And I don't him. But I think we've
brought up for the people that talked about but in
the last two episodes. But I do want to say,
I mean, Donovan Walton would have been a good one.
I wouldn't have gotten it before before Jeff would have,
(01:09:35):
but I would not have I don't. I do want
to say I both appreciate and and don't like that.
The implication here is that like I'm Charles Barkley on this,
just not knowing who where guys are. But you know,
I appreciate it in that it's it's at least a
little bit valid. So all right, so we're gonna do
(01:09:56):
a k. This is Peter Q though I think it's
just I don't think we did in cues. So I know,
we'll see, we'll see.
Speaker 3 (01:10:05):
With nicknames, it's always hard. I never quite feel like
I have the finger on the pulse sometimes, you know,
I don't know that's something I know that seems familiar
to me doesn't seem failiar to everyone else. We'll find
out first one Superman. Yeah, that's how I thought this
is gonna go. This is this is an extremely ironic
(01:10:28):
nick name. No no, no takers on Superman. It is,
in fact Kevin Pillar for making his diving catches. Next
one swipe right.
Speaker 2 (01:10:45):
HiPE swipe right.
Speaker 1 (01:10:51):
Yeah, think about it for a second.
Speaker 2 (01:10:53):
Yeah, I know, right, So like you think of a
bass dealer, but you run right to left. Yes, from
your point of view, you're running right.
Speaker 1 (01:11:06):
I thought, tags, Yeah, it's not. I'm also not like
I'm also thinking of like the app names or whatever,
but I'm not. This man has a career five for
nine installn basis. I have no idea. All right, it's
a Chad Pinder. Oh come, that's not even yeah, uh,
(01:11:27):
sweet Lou, there you go. Jack gets One, the.
Speaker 2 (01:11:32):
Pod Father, the pop father pod pod.
Speaker 1 (01:11:37):
Oh, Scott, that's correct, Big Smooth. I feel like this
is something that's been said about this man like twice
in his life. But we'll see Big Smooth, the only
Big Smooth as far as.
Speaker 2 (01:11:49):
I can tell, Bigs Big Smooth.
Speaker 3 (01:11:53):
Yeah, Actually, I don't think that's true anymore. I think
there is a new player who was also named Big Smooth,
Like recently, it's to a point where it doesn't feel
like he deserves an nickname.
Speaker 1 (01:12:03):
I feel like you should have. I don't know. I
guess there are some some people have come up with.
I know it's not his actual nickname. It's the machine,
but I'm just gonna say Albert it is, uh, Drew Pomerans, no.
Speaker 2 (01:12:19):
Smooth.
Speaker 1 (01:12:23):
Colson Montgomery also being dubbed big smooth. Can you what's
particularly smooth about it? Yeah? All right. Next, Ricky rain
Drops m hmm, I have imagine also known as pretty Ricky.
(01:12:50):
It is indeed, sure, I mean more Ricky Raindrops the
like that.
Speaker 2 (01:13:00):
He Oh, it's a lot of time between pitches, so
it's like the human but a pitcher.
Speaker 1 (01:13:07):
Let's see ricky rain drops. Do we have an etymology
of that? Yeahn no, I think it's uh no, it
just appears to be. It just appears to be a
player's week beIN weekend thing. Okay. El Patron translated in
(01:13:28):
English as the Boss. I feel like I know I've
seen that before. It's the only El Patron. It's a
good nickname. The Boss is a good name.
Speaker 3 (01:13:43):
I don't we should start calling him by it, because
I don't think anybody does.
Speaker 1 (01:13:47):
I don't. It's not coming on.
Speaker 3 (01:13:49):
Part of the problem is that this man has given
too many fan bases an opportunity to call him by
his nickname. And you know, it's hard to It's hard.
It's hard to bring it around, you know it.
Speaker 1 (01:13:57):
When you when you have a nickname, especially like a
mid two or one, you got to rebuild it up
with the new franchise, the new fan base. This is
jerks and profar. I thought I had seen that, but
that's not familiar to me. Wild Horse, that's correct. Two
(01:14:17):
to two, The Machine Albert Pools, all right, Craig takes
him very quickly. I said it early, said earlier. But
all right, Jeff at the tie, good luck, shredder, Redder, Shredder.
Speaker 2 (01:14:35):
I feel like I have heard this before.
Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
Yeah, I don't think this is a teager thing. I
think this is. I don't think it's based on that,
based on who it is. I think I think this
is more of a grit hustle kind of nickname, Nick Punto, Nicks. Wait. Wait,
I'm sorry, Craig. I need to know how you got there,
(01:14:59):
Grace said, I mean, there are a couple other guys.
It's peas and it's you said. What did you say
grit and hustle? Do you think of I don't, I don't.
I read I read rand Ball Stew's articles about Nick Punto. Okay,
(01:15:20):
