Speaker 1 (00:01):
WM and the MOLA broadcasting that what probably was that
The Big Mo Podcast. The Big Mo Podcast is brought
to you by Parma twenty four Craftsmen Electric and Revey Landscaping.
And now your hosts Andy Nagel and Big Mo Barrett.
So another rendition of the Big Move Podcast, Andy Nagel
and we are locked and loaded. Tonight is graduation night.

(00:24):
So for the seniors, yes, they will be seniors for
abouts as I look at my clock here for about
eight more hours. And then then they always joked around
when I was the alumni director. At eight o'clock tonight,
they become on yours mine, they're yours as hours high school, correct,
but they're yours you're the alumni director. And it was

(00:46):
kind of neat to have you a week ago talk
with these guys down in the CLC, which is a
Shamanat Learning Center and the old library, not the original library,
but the in between library. But now it's so yeah,
it's a great gathering space and neck you're talking to
some of the guys.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
And what was your message to it was Jason actually
spoke to him first, and then Jason Neeehouse, our president,
and then I followed him and just you know, gave
him that message to be proud of Molar. We do.
We are a lightning rod and we do take some
arrows from time to time, and uh, you know, be
proud of that. And and the fact that you know,

(01:26):
this is one of the you know, I told last
year's class, this is one of the few high schools
in the country where you put Molar High School on
your resume and then will open doors. You know, you
may have college professors.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
It's say you're right about that because people put your yeah, correct,
people will say, don't put your high school on your
nonsense if you're from more, if you put it on
your LinkedIn right, or your social media or whatever it is,
because it's a big deal.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, because it opens those doors.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
I told them this, and and and I don't take
credit for it. We have a special guest in the
green room. We got to get to him in a
minute here. But I told the guys because it was
told to me when I was a senior and we
were all in a graduation practice which they had, I
believe yesterday yesterday morning, yea at Centas and the person

(02:13):
leading it, I don't even remember who it was. I
don't remember who it was. But I remember what they said.
They said, look around, and they said, see all these guys.
Tomorrow night at graduation. It will be the last time
all of you will be together in one room for
the rest of your life. Yeah, And how heavy that
is and the gravity of that of you know, you

(02:35):
spend four years with these dudes and you only have
one more time together with them. Yep, And that kind
of hits home. It's it gives you a different perspective.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
It really does. And we're trying to encourage them to
come back. We have a you know, you guys started
that pizza lunch the day before Thanksgiving, and that's a
great opportunity for those those still in college to come
back and reconnect with their friends and their classmates. But
you're right there. You're never going to get those n
one hundred plus kids all in the same room at
the same thing.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
I think about in twenty twenty, we had the twenty
and I gave the same message in twenty twenty, and
we all know what happened to Michael Kerran when he
went to Daton that following fall. Even then, when they
came back for his funeral, they weren't all there just
a few months removed, So that is it's a moment
that I encourage the guys to really embrace. They're running

(03:25):
out of this place like felony suspects and wanting to
get out of here, but I think they sometimes forget
Just embrace it. Embrace the hour or two you're gonna
be at the sentas Senator Born. It's a lot of
air tonight. Now, it's gonna be a lot of fun. Andy,
I'm excited for our first guess. Yes, we have a
student here in the house. He's in the green room now,
probably eating all the Montgomery and ribs you can get.

(03:46):
But his name is Degan Lions, and he approached myself
with an idea that I am really really excited about.
We're going to talk to Degan Lions, a rising senior.
Eight hours, you will no longer be rising, you will
be a seniors. We'll talk to Deagan Lions when we
come back. We're listening to the best covers of high

(06:06):
Mo podcast. And you here with that theme is Andy Nagel.
Do you know what that is?

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Hard Knocks?

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Hard Knocks? Is it HBO?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Was HBO bl I think they still have it? Yes, awesome.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Now it's NBC or HBO and NFL Films. And it's
a nice segue to bring on one of my favorite dudes.
I have a rising senior, so I'll say this guy's
my second favorite rising senior behind Graham com behind Graham Cohen.
It is Deagan Lions. Degan, you're I believe this is

(06:39):
your first appearance on the Big Mo podcast.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Welcome yess sir, thank you for having me on.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Degan by way of Princeton, the school district you were
you had you were a Princeton guy. But before we
get talking to here, how in the world did you
end up at Molar because that's a felony. Ye, So
live in the Princeton School district can go to Molar.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
The COVID year happened. I didn't really like Princeton that much,
and I shadowed at More and Stax, and as soon
as I went to More, I knew this is where
I wanted to go. I did it even like I
walked in the Santax and was like, I don't want
to go here. So I kind of knew immediately that
I was gonna get stage right.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Yeah, all right, So the reason why we have Deagan
in the studio is, uh, full disclosure. We Deagan said, Degan,
I'll let you tee it up. You tell everybody, tell
exactly what you told me so and how you got
on this podcast today. This is kind of we're just
kind of throwing this together, but there's a reason why
you're here. Tell everybody about it, and I'll give you

(07:37):
some background music too. You ready hit it.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
So the I came up with this idea about a
week or two ago, and I knew if I texted Barrett,
I could get this to happen. So I was like, Barrett,
I want to win an Emmy, no pressure, Yeah, it's.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
You see what you just started with, I want to
win an Emmy. That's awesome. Now for let me set
the table here. Deagan is one one of the most
talented videographers. We have a ton of rider Hicks, will Ship,
We got a bunch of guys that have really fallen
in love with this and it's I don't even call
it videography because anybody can shoot video. It's storytelling, yes,

(08:14):
and Degan is unbelieve immensely talented shooting video. He's done
it before, so that he's done it the last couple
of years here at More. But now go ahead and
walk us through. You want to ticket to the next level?

Speaker 2 (08:25):
Now?

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (08:26):
I was basically thinking, how am I going to leave
my mark at Mueller. I've done pictures of the past
two years, but that that won't really get me remembered
as much as an Emmy would while I'm still in
high school. So it's basically a documentary series about what
Moller football like, all the behinds the scenes stuff that
happens throughout the season. And we're on the rough stages

(08:47):
of it right now, we're still storyboarding a lot of stuff,
but it's going to be huge, I think.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
So he came to the right guy or right guys,
because you know, I know people. And he started off
by saying, I want to win an Emmy. And when
I think of Emmy.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Nineteen seventy four, I cracked.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Nineteen seventy four grad and forty plus Emmy Award winning
producer director, filmmaker David Ashbrock. So within the first five
minutes you were up here in this meeting you and
I had I said, let's phone a friend and who
do we call? David Ashbrock. What did he say to you?

Speaker 3 (09:24):
He said, he's on board for it, and he loved
the idea.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
David Ashbrock, the forty plus time Emmy Award winning everything
is going to collab with you because he knows what
your goal is and he's accomplished that goal forty plus times.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
So I am niny gold status.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
I am excited. So we're in the infant sea stages
of this. You sit down a notebook in front of me,
and on top of the notebook and pen or pencil
whatever you have in big bold letters Emmy and underneath
it give a little snapshot of what you're thinking for
the people out there listening on a big no podcast. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
I first want to say that this was all with
collaboration with Hunter Berg. He's gonna be my fellow Joy
six er. He helped me brainstorm all of this. So
the episodes we have planned out so far are off season,
which is just off season stuff. We have King of
the Block against Princeton, which is a huge game for
me personally coming from Princeton, and then we have Trinity

(10:24):
at Ironton a lot of cool stuff that can come
from Ironton. And then we have the CPA from Tennessee,
which can also be really cool showing off Tennessee and
what it's like to travel with the team. Then we
have probably what's going to be my favorite episode, the
Santax episode that's gonna be really fun kind of showing
off the school environment and also the game day atmosphere.

(10:45):
Then we have a sal we have the Pit, which
I have a lot of cool things planned for, and
then we have Ignacious, Sane Ed's and Muskegon to finish
off the season. And we've yet to storyboard any of
the playoffs stuff because all that depends on how the
season goes, but we for sure have a lot of ideas.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
I'm a little surprised. Andy Nagel asked you have you
ever seen Hard Knocks? And you said no. I mean
what you want to do is a Mollar branded version
of Hard Knocks. So that's your homework assignment. Aside from
meeting with mister You're gonna meet with mister Ashbrock next week.
Coach A coach B. We're gonna get him on board.

(11:22):
He's gonna be excited about this as well. I can
tell you that. But also to have you watch Hard
Knocks and this is cool, Andy, isn't it. I mean,
it's mollared football. It's kind of what you expect when you.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
Get that peak behind the curtain. Even if you don't
watch Hard Knocks. If you're you know, scrolling through Twitter
x whatever, Instagram and you see those clips like you
pulled up some John Gruden stuff, you know when he's
miked up. I mean, it's exciting to get to see,
you know, what those players listen to in team meetings. Now.

(11:52):
May have to beat beat a little bit on on
John Gruden, but it's awesome. It's really cool. I wish
you the best, and you know you have us as
resources to We were just talking about people that Barrett knows,
that myself knows, you know, Molar grads, the media here
in Cincinnati, and I really think that you'll have a
lot of support and a lot of people jump on board.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
And I had enough content with the Princeton game. I
told him he could win an Emmy just in that episode. Yeah,
I mean there's enough content with that storied history going
back with Princeton as well. What's your goal? I mean,
obviously win an Emmy, but what's your goal in this
whole process.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
I just want, obviously to win the Emmy, but also
like to I want the future students I'm Molar that
do photography to see that this can be done. And
like if you told me three years ago that my
goal senior year was to win an Emmy, I.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
Wanted to even said that was possible.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
I didn't even have a camera freshman year. So I
just like want to let the future of Molar students
know that you can really do this, Like it may
sound cheesy, but if you put your mind to it,
you can do it. And there's not really like the
sky's the limit, Like you can't go.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
Shoot for the stars, my friend.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
Shoot, this is gonna. This is gonna be a lot
of fun. I expect nothing but excellence from my guy,
Diggan Lions. This is gonna, this is gonna be a
lot of fun. Yes, all right, you know the you
know the Ama minor there digging, Yes, you know it
all the way through. I won't make your cigo because
I like you. That's Steagan Lions. We'll be following pillar

(13:22):
to post all his progress so he'll have launch dates.
He's gonna he's gotta got some homework to do. But
once we get more information, you can listen to the
b MP to find out when his episodes will drop.
As he chases that Emmy Award winning documentary, we gotta
come with a fun name of it too. That's all.
That's a whole other thing. That's Stagan Lions, W m

it's in their name.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Not going. A big podcast and a great interview with
Degan Liones excited to see what he could do and
Andy n Angel. A busy weekend for sure. We had
the Jordan Marshall Camp on Saturday, which was over one
hundred kids I think close to one hundred and fifty
young men courtesy and presented by Montgomery in also Beacon
Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. As it was unbelievable and the

(15:26):
weather was just and we had all the storms the
night before. I do want to say prayers to the
people of London and Somerset, Kentucky, who were destroyed by
an F four tornado that ripped through four of the
residents of London in Somerset actually left that following morning,
Saturday morning, to come up and be a part of
Jordan's camp, So they were sharing the devastation that was

(15:50):
left behind with that tornado. So prayers to the folks
of London, Kentucky certainly, so they'll need our prayers in
a big road ahead for them. But the Saturday was beautiful,
absolutely beautiful.

Speaker 4 (16:02):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
You know, on the way out, I mean, how many
camps do you go to as a you know, a fourth, fifth, sixth,
you know, second gradeor third even first graders there when
you leave you get a Montgomery and pull pork sandwich.

Speaker 5 (16:14):
Not many.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
It's unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
There's that, and and just the fact that I mean
you had obviously Jordan was the host, but Carson Hobbs
came back, Sam Hubbard was here, UH and several of
Jordan's UH teammates from the University of Michigan, the football team.
Just an awesome, awesome day, and kudos to Jordan and
thank you for giving back. I know you were a
big part of that.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
I want to give a big shot you said Michigan.
Stuart Blake, who's one of the kickers at Michigan, loved that. Dude. Man,
we had a great time. Luke Hamilton was here as well.
And then you had Rod Moore, who arguably is one
of the top five safeties in college football. Hurt last year.
He'll be back this year, uh to have a breakout season.
I'm sure he'll be a second or third round NFL

(16:58):
draft pick. He was DJ so DJ Rod Moore. So
it was just a lot of fun to have those
guys mingling with our guys, our student athletes. Coach b
and the football team was there to help as well,
and it was just a great day. I had several
people say it was the best football camp they've been to.
You know, I don't know how many they've been to,
but you know, getting good feedback like that, it's always special.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
And kudos to Nadine and her crew. She's awesome from
the University of Michigan that actually put it on. It's
kind of very similar to it like a pro camps.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
Do have to clarify she's not with the University of Michigan. Oh,
she does represent Jordan. I don't think she's I don't
think to have anybody correct. She works for a company,
a management company, and she specifically man She ran Blake
Koram's camp, but she is not specifically with him. Now,
Chris Bryant was down here. He is the director of

(17:51):
player Personnel, but he was not running the camp. He
was just It's.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
Almost like pro camps for sure.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
For sure. Yeah, very similar, no doubt, special day, no doubt.
And then as if that wasn't enough, this weekend, we
inducted uh six more guys into the Moller Jerry Faust
Hall of Fame on Sunday, and along with our three
award winners that are kind of the tied to the

(18:17):
wing of the Hall of Fame as we'll talk about that.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
Yeah, Tay, we brought it back to campus and uh,
first of all, I want to thank Tom Gregory and
Montgomery In for once again partnering with the Hall of Fame.
We used to. You know, we've had it at the
Montgomery In for years, but you know what, we have
this awesome space here at school. Uh And and it's
my charge and I think you know, I speak for

(18:41):
Louise and Betsy and Special Events and Mary Fisher in
advancement that we want to bring these these key events
back to school in showcase what we have here. It
is about the school, it's about the kids, uh and
about our graduates. So why not bring them here when
when we have so much to show off? And it
was we did it well. We had it in in
the old cafeteria the student commons and we dressed it

(19:03):
up and it was awesome, very emotional, you know, it's
it's it's amazing how much this place means to so
many people, and it's it's emotional. You know. The six
Hall of famers that went in, we had John Barringer
nine for golf, class of nine for golf. Coach Tim Held,

(19:25):
you know, in his twenty ninth year, eighteenth year as
the head coach of Muhlar baseball, he went in. Craig Lindsay,
who it's his thirtieth year here at Mohler as the
athletic trainer. He went in deserving all of them, deserving.
So Sam Hubbard twenty fourteen, he went in, Zach Lowe
class of twenty fourteen for baseball, he's in and Carl

(19:47):
Woods class of seventy seven he is in as well.
And he's like I said in my remarks about Carl
you know, you mentioned all the time that quote from
Sir Isaac Newton, you know, standing on the shoulders of giants,
And when it comes to Molar football man, Carl Woods
is one of those giants, being back in fuzzies era
a nineteen seventy seven grads, so he was there for

(20:09):
the national championships in seventy five, seventy six in that
whole run. So Carl Woods is in. And then we
had our three service winners, which you know, we teach
service to these students every day all day and they
do such a great job of representing Moller High School
out in the community. But we have three special awards.

Speaker 1 (20:28):
Won.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
The highest honor for an assistant coach went to doctor
Brian Adams as the assistant cross country coach. The second
one the Habiger Student Service Award, that goes to a
student manager in the name of Mike Habeger, who was
my student manager Habs class of eighty nine for baseball.
But it went to Mac Qualters, who I had the

(20:49):
pleasure of working with when I was coaching Molar Baseball
with coach held Mack Qualters from the class of twenty thirteen.
And then our Whitey Campbell marrying his service Award, which
was knew as of last year. The committee came up
with an award for those that have given their time,
treasures and talents over a period of time to the
athletic department and it's student athletes and that went to

(21:12):
Jai Chavoni this year. So just an awesome day to
celebrate Molar High School, Mollar Athletics. So and I thank
you you were a huge Our team was awesome. But
but my right hand guy here, I called him the
pied piper on Sunday, Baard plays a huge role in
into the Hall of Fame weekend and making it a

(21:33):
first class event.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
Videos, the music that sound.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
Kind of kind of well. And I got to give
kudos to Betsy and and and our advancement team Kate George.
But but Betsy, uh, she has that vision. When I
said to cafeteria and it's kind of like, h but
we I mean, it was beautiful and I have had
so many compliments on that and so many people say,
you know what, we do need to have events back here.

(22:03):
It works. The space is awesome. So many people walked
in and you can tell they haven't been back in
a while. And they walked into that from the Merry
Courtyard entrance and they're just eyes wide open looking up
at the ceiling of the hub. You know, just floored
by what we've done here at Molor High School.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
It's exciting, there's no doubt about it, and just kicks
off a busy summer. I mean, just think this is
just the beginning. It's graduation tonight, but then it's bourbon cigars,
golf outing, all the summer camps. And this place never sleeps,
maybe like over Christmas hop maybe Christmas Easter. Maybe, Yeah,

(22:41):
every other time we are rocking and rolling. Tonight's a
big night. We will the Molar alumni. Now have you
done this yet? As alumni director, to tell somebody when
they at graduation tonight, we will add on to the
storied history of this alumni base. How many alumni will
we now have at the end of tonight? That's your homework, Candy.

Speaker 2 (23:03):
Name now will be over thirty.

Speaker 1 (23:06):
Exact number alums now living. I want all alarms living
or dead. How many we will have at the end
of tonight? That's always a cool thing to share out.
That's your homework. Post that hard.

Speaker 2 (23:18):
We'll post it when we post this broadcast of the BMP.

Speaker 1 (23:23):
Several years ago, we had a Molar alum named Xander Drew.
That's that's his stage name, his music names Andrew, who
wrote a song about Molar about his four years here
called all Too Soon. He's a man of Moeller and
it's been this song that I've used in my uh my,

(23:43):
my partying videos of the Class of whatever, in this
case twenty twenty five, because when these guys come in
as a freshman, I get video of them on commitment night.
And I've been here long enough now that I think
started like two years ago, where I now have four
full years of what it was like when they first came.
And it's to the track or to the song all

(24:03):
Too Soon by Xander Druden, who has given me the
rights to use that song. So here's a funny story
on Facebook. I don't think I've told you this. Two
weeks ago I put the video out the Class of
twenty five when they were freshmen coming in, and I
tied it into their graduation day, and I think I

(24:25):
even had some video what they look like now whatever.
But it played to the song of All Too Soon.
Facebook sends me some hate mail says your video has
been pulled down because it violates copyright laws to the
singers songwriter. And I've had that happen before, never had
a leg to stand on, but I did now. I
sent them a message back and I refuted it and

(24:46):
said he is a man of Moler, He's given me
full rights on this song to their credit. Within a
few days the video was back up. Oh, very cool,
very cool song. A lot of people have now knowned
as Molar's a anthem at the end of graduation. And
we're gonna end the podcast listening to Xander Drew and

(25:06):
his song titled All Too Soon. If you haven't heard
it yet, it's Andy Nagel, Big Mo Barrett. Good luck
on the seniors. We hope they that we know they're
going to have a tremendous career. And don't forget where
you came from here here at Muller High School.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
Download disk, people, download disk.

Speaker 6 (25:24):
My foreman, is how do we get here when this
story still feels unfinished?

Speaker 5 (25:31):
Used to be so clear?

Speaker 6 (25:34):
Is this really our good riddance? Isn't it so weird.
It used to be so clear, whis sin I could
stop the time. It goes so fast.

Speaker 7 (25:47):
You close your eyes and it ought starts to fade.
It Ought starts to fade.

Speaker 5 (25:56):
I guess this is the end.

Speaker 8 (25:59):
If we are met again, will you see me as
a friend or as your end? I mean, I don't
want to say goodbye to the best days of the life.

Speaker 5 (26:13):
So hard to face the truth. Good things always leave

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose.
