(04:15):
forward. We may have an answerfor you that very very soon. But
that's now above and beyond my paygrade here at ESPN seven hundred. So
that's where we're at. That's whatwe're doing today. We're gonna talk a
little football today, just a littlebit of football today with Jordan Wynn,
former Utah quarterback, and his thoughtson the team and the expectations this year
for Utah football. Are they toohigh or are they about where they should
(04:39):
be? Conference championship and a playoffPerth talk to Jordan about that. Our
friend Andy Larson comes by today,we'll get Andy's final thoughts on the Utah
Jazz and possibilities and options Tonight.David Evans is going to join us today.
David's one of the new assistant coachesat the University of Utah, A
very well renowned high school coach herein Utah, is now joining Craig Smiths
(05:01):
staffs. We'll talk to David Evanstoday and then talk to Andy Bailey,
the attorney and NBA insider. AndyBailey will join us with some draft thoughts
as well right here on the BillRiley Show. But if you have anything
you want to talk about, youcan certainly share it on the program today
at eight seven seven three five threezero seven hundred. Again that's eight seven
seven three five three zero seven hundred. That's the dish Pros text line.
(05:27):
And I will say this, I'vegotten a lot of really nice text messages,
which I appreciate. I've read someof those, but I've gotten a
lot of really nice emails from youguys too. I got another really nice
email this morning, and I've gotto say you, guys, Jordan sent
it to me this morning. Jordan, thank you for that email, and
thank you for what you said inthere. I've always told you I never
(05:48):
take for granted what I have withthis job and being able to sit behind
this microphone on a regular basis andall that good stuff. I've never ever
taken it for granted. I loveit every single day. But sometimes I
guess you don't realize just how muchof a part of people's day to day
routine and lives sometimes you can be. And I've gotten some really nice,
(06:11):
heartwarming emails about you know, meand this show and kind of being a
soundtrack for some people when they've beengoing through good times and bad times.
So I thank you guys for thosetext messages and for those emails as well,
because I've read them and I'll trymy best to respond to all of
them too. But I really doappreciate seeing those kind words from you guys,
(06:34):
I really really do, so keepthem coming. I'm not gonna I'm
not gonna say don't don't send thembecause I love reading them and I love
to know that I was a smallpart of what you guys do on a
day to day basis for a lotof years, so it makes me feel
good. So if you've got them, keep sending them. I love that
stuff I really really do, Sowe'll we'll keep reading them and keep doing
(06:57):
them, and we'll do today's showtomorrow, show your bar, and then
wrap things up, put a bigbow on things on Friday. But again,
as I said before, and I'llsay again, I'm not going anywhere.
I'm just I'm switching locations. You'llstill hear me on this radio station
on a very regular basis, youknow, doing Utah stuff, being a
guest on the midday show, beingthe guest on Spencer's show, contributing in
(07:20):
different ways to content here when Ican, and my voice will be still
you know, representing key customers, clients and partners of ours here at ESPN
seven hundred. So I'll still bearound, and as Dion would say,
I'm not hard to find. I'llbe around, and you'll of course see
me and hear me on game daysas well, and probably see me a
(07:41):
little bit more too, with thenew ESPN Plus platform that we're helping to
create up at the University of Utahfor lots and lots and lots of different
streaming and linear television events. Soanyway, that's where we're at and that's
what we're doing here today Draft dayhere in the NBA. If you want
to talk about it, we coulddo it. Cook kickoff in football.
If you want to talk about it, we could do it. I want
(08:03):
to do one more of these withyou today, one more Jersey Mike's Pick
Them contest. I Am going togive somebody one hundred and fifty dollars worth
of Sandwich gift cards if you cannail the first five picks tonight and who
the Jazz will select. The firstfive picks tonight, and who the Jazz
(08:26):
will select. So you've got togive me six picks, don't. I
don't need the team because trades canhappen. What I need is the first
five names called, and then whoeverthe Jazz select at number ten or wherever
they end up selecting. So ifyou want to do that, you want
to participate in that contest, onehundred and fifty dollars in Jersey Mike's gift
(08:46):
cards for you if you can nailthat today here on the Bill Riley Show,
text in your picks one through fivein tonight's NBA Draft, just the
players, and then give me whothe g you think the Jazz select with
their selection as well. Eight sevenseven three five, three zero, seven
hundred. That's your dish pros textline. You might want to give it
(09:07):
a little thought, or maybe youhave already, but give me the first
five picks in tonight's draft, andthen who the Jazz select with their pick
as well. If you nail it, you know you've got to nail it.
I don't believe in runner up trophiesand participation prizes. You got to
nail it. But if you do, one hundred and fifty dollars in Jersey
Mike's gift cards will be yours hereon the Bill Riley Show for the Pick
(09:31):
the Draft contest tonight. So sendit to me via text. You've got
till roughly five or six o'clock tonightto get that done, and if you
do, you'll be in the runningfor it picks one through five and then
who the Jazz select with their pick, and that will get you in the
contest today here on the Bill RileyShow on Utah's number one Sports Talk ESPN
seven hundred. So that guy hada couple of people text me and email
(09:56):
me and say, well, youdo one more hot or not Wednesday.
As much as I'd like to doit, I'm not gonna do that.
But we may have a little funtomorrow and Friday and bring back some old
promos and liners and features and thingswe've done down through the years, but
there will be no more that hasbeen retired long ago. For those of
you that are yearning for it today, there will be no Cameron Diaz hot
(10:18):
or not Wednesday here on the BillRiley Show on Utah's number one Sports Talk
ESPN seven hundred. So the draftis tonight. The Jazz select at number
ten, then number twenty nine, then number thirty two. The coverage here
will begin at six with myself,Spence check Its and Gordy Chiasa, and
(10:39):
we're just gonna break it down fora couple of hours. You know,
certainly we know the Jazz are gonnaprobably take that early pick. What they
do with the later two picks andthe one pick tonight the one pick tomorrow
remains to be seen. But ifyou're right now a Jazz fan and you
know about where they're at, I'dbe curious, who would you like to
see the Jazz get. Justin Zanikis very clear and saying we're just gonna
(11:01):
take the best player available, andthat's that's the right way to go.
It really is. That's that's theright way to go, because the Jazz
have lots and lots of needs theystill need. In my opinion, they
still need a point guard. I'mnot convinced Chante George is a is a
franchise point guard. They need moreshooting. They just simply do they need
three and D wings. The McHaleBridges thing's not gonna happen, now,
(11:24):
I know he was a name thatwas kicked around quite a bit. Well,
uh sorry, Jazz fans, butthe Knicks jumped in and landed Bridges
and gave the Knicks a whole pileof picks to do or the Nets a
whole pile of picks to do it. So Kale Bridges is exactly what the
Jazz need, but he's not goingto be available to them. So we'll
see if Trader Dan gets wheeling anddealing here soon. But clearly the Knicks
(11:46):
and the Nets and maybe even thePhoenix Suns have begun to kick things off
here. So you just tell me, you've heard a lot of the names,
and you know where the Jazz aredrafting. There's a bunch of them.
There's a bunch of them, youknow, there's Rob Dillingham, There's
Cody Williams, there's the kid fromFrance Saloon, Donovan Klingen, Ron Holland
(12:15):
there's a bunch of guys that willfit where the Utah Jazz are. My
question for you is, if youhad your choice based on what you've read,
who would you go with? Whowould you go with? What would
be your choice for the Utah Jazzeight seven seven three five three zero seven
hundred gets you in and on boardtoday on the Bill Riley Show. Who
(12:35):
would be your choice? I knowyou're gonna give me your pick, But
if you don't want to do thepick thing, if you're the Utah Jazz,
who would you like to say?If you're a jazz fan, I
know a lot of you are,who would you like to see the Jazz
take at number ten tonight? Forme, it's an easy choice in selection.
It's Rob Dillingham. The Jazz passedon the Kentucky point Guard a year
ago, Cason Wallace, and hehad a fantastic first year with the Oklahoma
(13:00):
City Thunder. Now again, I'mnot turning the page on Kante George yet
or Taylor Hendrix yet. Both thoseguys have big upside, but I'm not
convinced, and I just listened toDanny Ains talk. I'm not convinced that
Jazz are convinced either that Keyante Georgeis their point guard, their franchise guy
(13:20):
for the future. Well, Kentuckyhas a habit of producing really good point
guards down through the years, guysthat can really play that maybe don't flash
enough while they're at college because there'sso much talent in that Kentucky program.
For me, in the Kentucky basketballI watched, I probably watched Kentucky play
five or six times this year, and reading a lot of the pre draft
(13:43):
stuff too. I really really likeRob Dillingham. I do. I like
Rob Dillingham a lot. Now,Yeah, i'd love to say read Shepherd.
I just don't think the Jazz aregonna be able to get into the
top three to get a guy likeReadhet. I'd love to have each chard
here, but I don't think they'regonna be able to get it. But
I think they will be able toget Rob Dillingham, Ron holland Cody Williams.
(14:05):
Those guys are intriguing to me too. A couple of the French kids
the euro kids. Yeah, butI really like because Kentucky guys tend to
thrive at the next level for aslittle as they get. Sometimes under Calipario
and Kentucky, sometimes they thrive thenext level. I think Dillingham is one
of those guys. So that wouldbe the guy for me. Who would
(14:28):
you like to see the Jazz selecttonight? Hit me up at the dish
pros text line at eight seven seventhree five three zero seven hundred. Again,
that's eight seven seven three five threeszero seven hundred to get you in
and on board today here on Utah'snumber one sports like It's Draft day,
Jazz fans, what do you wantto see tonight? Come on now,
let me know what you want tosee tonight from your team. This is
(14:50):
a big summer for the Utah Jazz. Does the rebuild begin now? Are
they still tearing things down? Whatdo you want to see the Jazz do
tonight? Hit me on the textline and let me know if you want
to get in that pix contest, give me the first five picks tonight plus
what the Jazz do for one hundredand fifty dollars in Jersey. Mike's gift
cards here on the Bill Riley Showtoday. Quick update on the Euros.
(15:11):
We've got two matches going on rightnow. Ukraine and Belgium early second half
are zero zero and Slovakia and Romaniaare one one in the fifty sixth.
So we'll keep tabs on that.Georgia, Portugal at one, Czech Republic
Republic in Turkey or I think theywere calling it Turkeye, which I had
(15:33):
never heard before, but they werecalling them that all weekend on Turkey.
Coming up at one o'clock today tonight, we'll have little Copa America Ecuador,
Jamaica and Venezuela and Mexico tonight hereon here on American soil. So anyway,
that's where we're at on Draft Day. Don't forget. Our coverage begins
tonight at six. Myself, Spenceand Gordie, we'll we'll cover the draft
(15:58):
here tonight for you guys, andwe'll we'll do our thing and give you
breakdowns and Gordy will be in hiselement and we'll talk for a few hours
and then call it good. Butyeah, we'll begin our draft covers tonight
at about six right here on ESPNseven hundred. Let's grab a couple of
text messages on the program today eightseven seven three five three zero seven hundred
(16:18):
to get you in and on boardtoday here on the Bill Riley Show,
text message, Hey Bill, willyou give us your phone number so we
can still text you on sports, opinions and thoughts. No, but maybe
I'll set up my own dish prostext line. Maybe I'll just go up
there. I'll be up at theUniversity of Utah. I'm my director of
Broadcasting Department, and maybe I'll justset up a text line and you guys
(16:41):
can just fire questions at me ifyou want to do that. Probably not,
but maybe I'll do that. Textmessage, Hey Bill. Here's what
they do tonight. Donovan Clinging one, reschiare Ricise, the French Kid two,
Shepherd three, Alex for Castle fiveand the Jazz take Dillingham at number
(17:03):
ten. Okay, that's that seemshigh for Donovan clinging to me, I've
not seen a single mock, butthat's okay. Sometimes teams hide that stuff.
Text message, Hey Bill, theFrench Kid won, Alex sar II,
(17:25):
Shepherd three, Castle four, Clingingfive, the Jazz select Ron Holland.
Okay, I think there's a goodpossibility of that. He's a three
and D guy. The Jazz needa three and D guy in the worst
way out on the wing. Hecould help them. Gordy said this the
other day. He could help themimmediately on the defensive end, and they
(17:45):
do need that. But they alsoneed come on now, they need somebody
to be able to run that team. I don't know what you need more
of a guy that's a three andD wing that's really good, or somebody
that can run the team. Tome, if you don't have that proverbial
head of the snake, you're alittle bit of trouble. Text message,
Hey, Bill, I honestly haveno clue who is good or not in
(18:07):
this draft. But if we endup trading away marketing for any reason,
I'm done with this team. Seriously. If Lowry was a guy coming out
of the draft, for instance,he'd be a unicorn on the same wave
as Wimby. He is a unicorn, a big man that can do everything
at a high level. You don'tlose those kind of guys, and congrats
on the new journey. You'll bemissed, appreciate everything. Well, thank
(18:29):
you. No, I don't thinkthe Jazz are driving again. You listen
to everything. If somebody makes youan unbelievable deal, then you have to
listen to it at least. ButI don't think that they're gonna trade market
In because they know what he is, and at some point in time,
you've got to begin to build aroundsomething. Right. You're not building around
(18:51):
John Collins, you're not really buildingaround Walker Kessler. But Lowry Markin is
one of those guys. He's notthe a Okay, he's not. He's
really your set on a good team, a playoff team, a team that
wants to battle for a championship.Lowry's probably your number two option. The
Jazz have to find a number oneoption, whether that's through a trade or
(19:15):
free agency or the draft. Butstill, you have to build around somebody,
and he's cost affordable. He likesit here. I would be very
surprised if the Jazz made some sortof move to get rid of Lowry Markinen.
Hey Bill best case, Stephan Castleworst case. Devin Carter. Castle
(19:37):
does everything well besides shoot that canbe coach. Devin Carter does everything,
just not quite as talented. He'snot quite as big either. I mean
he's six with two, six withthree. I would say Dillingham, but
he won't be there. I wanthim to trade up for Castle. I
mean, if you could get StephenCastle, he's an elite player, He's
a top five guy. He reallyhe's got a gray I mean again,
(20:02):
he guards, He's got great linkon the perimeter. He can play point
guard. Not really a point guard, but can play it. But you
are right about something. He isnot a consistent shooter yet. Text message.
I like to get Cody Williams orDalton Connect. Dillingham is nice,
but I like what Williams or Connectoffer just a little bit more. I
(20:23):
get that if you can get anelite shooter like Dalton Connect, they're not
gonna be able to get Read Shepherd, I don't think. But Connect's gonna
be in that five to eight range. So maybe you could get him.
And I know everybody likes Cody Williams. I know, and I'm probably gonna
be wrong on this, but Iwatched him play three times. I was
(20:44):
never wowed. There wasn't even awow moment in those three games I called
the Cody Williams played in. SoI'm not saying he he couldn't be a
good player, but if he gaveme connect or Williams. At least I
know what connects the elite skill is. And Gordy said yesterday with us and
he felt like connect could guard justa little bit too. So anyway,
(21:11):
eight seven seven three five three zeroseven hundred to get you in and on
board today here on the Bill RileyShow. Hey Bill, you need to
run those decisions by me. Iwill miss you in joy again. Well,
thank you for that. I appreciatethat. I'm sorry that I did
not run my life decision by yourandom texture, but that's okay. I
(21:33):
appreciate the fact you're gonna miss me. I'm not gonna be going anywhere.
I'm not dying at least I don'tthink. So I'll still be around and
you'll still hear me, and I'lltry to provide as much content as possible
for you when I ease into mynew position up at the University of Utah.
So I'm still gonna be around. It's just not gonna be in this
(21:56):
chair for three hours a day everyday. But thank you for saying that
that. That was kind of you. It really was text message, Hey
Bill, Josh you try to tradeup to five with the pistons and draft
Castle. Okay, a lot ofpeople out there like him, and he
comes from a good program, he'sbeen well coached, he's he's not an
(22:18):
older player. He's got great translatableskills. Again, the shot you'd like
to see better. But yeah, somebody's right. You can you can make
as she can get somebody with abetter shot. You can coach that and
fix that. Not sure that Castlewill ever be an elite shooter, but
we'll see eight seven seven three fivethree zero seven hundred. Big thank you
(22:40):
to Alvrmani. They can change yourlife by changing your hairline at alv Rmani.
Get that full set of hair andthat that full you know, head
of hair back again at ALVIRMANI.Talk to doctor Craig Barton at Alvrmani and
get that consultation done today and lethim show you exactly what he can do
for you. When I went inand he showed me the before and afters
(23:03):
of the work they do, itis amazing. So if you're somebody that's
been thinking about doing that, goto the very best. It's Alvi Rmani,
great partners of ours here on theBill Riley showing right here on ESPN
seven hundred all right, I've gotthe Pick them game going, our very
last ever pick them game. Ican say that now because somebody at least
(23:26):
with me. I'm not saying whoeversits in this chair won't do a Pick
them game two and try to letyou win Jersey Mike's or Proper Brewing or
whatever it might be. It's gonnabe the last one I do with you.
Draft related tonight, one hundred andfifty dollars worth of Jersey Mike's gift
cards for you. I need thefirst five picks in tonight's draft. I
don't need the team. I justneed the players and then who the Jazz
(23:48):
take with their pick, whether it'sat number ten or someplace else. Eight
seven seven three five three zero sevenhundred Again eight seven seven three five three
zero seven hundred. That's your dishpros text line that will get you to
me here on the Bill Riley Showtoday, and we'll go in that direction.
We'll have some fun with it.I'm gonna talk to Jordan Winn with
(24:11):
a little football, then some NBAwith Andy Larson and Moore coming up right
here on a Wednesday on ESPN sevenhundred. It's time to get the latest
on Utah athletics from our ut insiderhere on the Bill Riley Show, presented
by Les Olsen. It your officetechnology partner. Now, here's Bill Riley
(24:33):
with a ut insider on Utah's numberone sports talk ESPN seven hundred. As
we sit sixty four days out fromkickoff, it is time to talk a
little Utah football as a transition intothe Big twelve Pac twelve Media or Big
twelve b D Days again heart havingto break Big twelve b D Days coming
up in a couple of weeks downin Las Vegas. Sixteen teams will be
(24:56):
there, Utah will be represented andyeah, we'll see what happens from there.
Camp begins in a little over amonth, and then we're onto the
season. It's gonna be a wildtime this year in Utah. Our next
guest once played on that field andnow he's a huge fan as he watches
every game with a keen quarterback side. Jordan Winn joining us here form a
(25:17):
Utah quarterback on The Bill Riley Show. What's up? Jordan? Hi,
Bill? How are you good?I am excited. I am excited about
the beginning of the season. Whatabout you? Yeah, I can't get
here fast enough. We're in thethe role here of sports a bit.
Good things for the Olympics, butyeah, football can't get here quick enough.
(25:40):
My question for you is, youknow, we talked about insurance policies
for CAM just in case quarterbacks,as you know, have a tough time
sometimes finishing the season. When theyadded Sam Heward from cal Poly, what
was your reaction. I mean, that fits the that need. I think
it's kind of exactly what you want, kind of a you know, checkbox
(26:06):
checked really and I think you know, that really solidifies that room and provides
that kind of Plan B emergency, you know, personnel that you need to
uh you know again, hopefully, man, it just seems like none of
us can, none of us canget through a season. Hopefully can can
(26:27):
this year? And uh again,I think if he does, I mean,
sky's the limit. Really, Ithink so too. Can you remember
in your time around here, andyou've been around now since nine, I
believe that was your freshman so wasit? Yeah? Nine was your freshman
year. Can you remember a timewhere there were more legitimate weapons in the
receiver and tight end room than whatthey have now? I don't think so,
(26:52):
you know, I look back. You know, going back to my
years, I think we had youknow, two really good receivers and David
Read and Jeremy Brooks. At thesame time, Kendrick Muley I was a
good tight end, and we hadyou know, Matt osciold Andy Wadde.
That was a pretty loaded offensive skillgroup. But I mean, you know
when when you had like Case gothealthy and DRez that was a pretty good
(27:15):
group. Other than that, Imean, it either is just the guys
haven't necessarily been there. They've beenkind of banged up, so the weapons
have this year. I mean,it's it's crazy. It's what you want,
and you know, as a quarterbackor play caller, you've got to
be really excited about it. Imean, you look at it. You
(27:36):
got Dorian Singer, who was elitetwo years ago and got caught up in
the numbers at SC last year. You've got you know, Money Parks,
who knows the system. You know, twenty nine thirty one catches a year
ago. You've added a six foot, six hundred and fifteen pound wide receiver
runs a four to four, theleading receiver at Sarah Hughes a year ago.
(27:56):
You've got bram keathy back You've gotLand and King there, you've got
Carson Ryan who was a good tightend at UCLA, not to mention Munir
McLain and Micah Pittman. I justthere's so many options in this in this
in that you know, there's nota lot of footballs to go around.
I don't know that anybody's going tobe a thousand yard receiver on this team,
but they might have a couple ofeight hundred yard receivers. It's just
(28:18):
I just again with you. Youhad some really good frontline guys. I
just don't know that there was theoverall depth of talent in the last fifteen
years. Yeah. I mean, once you rattle them all off, it
is pretty impressive. You know, there's only one ball. It'll be interesting
to see how you keep all thoseguys happy. But man, a lot
of depth, a lot of differentlooks you can you can give a lot
(28:40):
of different sets, a lot ofdifferent personnel groupings. You know, for
a guy like lud that that alreadythrows at you a lot of different looks.
That's got to be pretty exciting. With that many weapons, I mean
across the board, like every kindof weapon you could want, right from
from Big tall, fast guys tospeed guys. You got your you know,
(29:03):
take two over the top guy,you got your possession guy. I
mean you got a tight end.You gota guys in this. I mean
it's across the board. You're notreally laughing anywhere? Which is which is?
You know you don't usually say that, so it's uh, yeah,
I mean I'd love to play inthis. Well, that's why I've been
(29:25):
saying, Jordan. I may havesaid it with you when we chatted back
in April or may. I justreally believe they're gonna throw the ball more
this year than they run the ball. And I had Dennis Erickson on last
week. Dennis laughed, he goes, do you remember who the head coach
is? I laughed about that. But I think Kyle has gotten to a
point now where he embraces putting theball in his best player's hand, and
(29:45):
his best players can't. And thebest offensive weapons they have are are wide
receivers guys that catch the ball. That's no slight at all to Makai Bernard
or Jalen Glover or any of thoseyoung running backs. But there's not a
Zach Moss or a you know,a DeVante Booker or somebody like that on
this roster. Yeah, and Ithink too. You know, one thing
(30:07):
to keep in mind, I chucklewith what Erickson says, because he's not
wrong, but with the way,you know, the throw game isn't like
shots down the field and these youknow crazy I mean, you could throw
hitches, slants, bubbles, tunnelscreen. There's a million ways to manufacture
like quote unquote run plays in thethrow game. RPOs for example, is
(30:33):
just a quick, really easy waylike it's a run or a throw depending
on the defense. And most ofthose throws are they're just long handoffs.
And so I think with that evolutionof offenses, you know, I agree,
I think Kyle's you know, loosenedup a little bit because of some
of these new nuances that are there. And then again, you know,
(30:55):
the the job of the offensive coordinatorand really everybody on the offensive staff is
to get the best guys the ballin the best situations. And so it
doesn't matter if it's a runner throwlike, it's getting those guys the ball
in space in high percentage you know, opportunities. And so I don't think
(31:15):
it's a stretch to to you know, predict there's more throws than runs this
year and and uh, you knowit'll be fun to watch. How can
you not, I mean, howdo you not get all those guys the
ball? That's a that's a lackof intelligence frankly, if you're not getting
those guys the ball in the throwgame. So yeah, Kyle still the
(31:37):
head coach, and he wants toplay his style of football, which has
proven to have a lot of success. But again, I think he's also
very smart and isn't just going tosit there and uh, you know,
demand that that the ball's ran tothe ground here when you have all these
guys on the roster. You mentionedthe r p O game. Do you
do you think we see less rp O just so you don't put Cam
and Harm's way as much. See, So, like it's interesting because the
(32:01):
RPO game can can really be dependingon how you use it, a really
nice way of creating a lot ofoptions, and I think eliminating the QB
run game. You know, youcan do a lot of cool things running
like inside and outside zone and tagging, you know, like a finder route
(32:22):
where the receiver just fits behind youknow, kind of like an inside the
box safety or linebacker type guy andif he flows with the run, you
simply pull it and throw it rightbehind him. And there's a lot of
variations obviously things you can do offof that, but I think that's more
likely than true, like read zone, because that's where Cam's gonna have to
(32:45):
pull it and and make plays withthe seat versus if you do you know,
kind of a nuanced arpo where youblock the front and are reading second
or third level defenders, you kindof get the best of both worlds,
be where you don't put Cam necessarilyin harm's way running the football too much.
Jordan Win with us here at theBill Riley Show today on Utah's number
(33:07):
one sports talk ESPN seven hundred. If you were a guessing or betting man
right now, who would you pegas the leading receiver on this team this
year. You've got Cam Brant Keithywho's back and healthy, and he and
Cam have a relationship for a longtime, but they don't necessarily go down
the field to brand. You've gota legit deep over the top, two
of them really in money parks, but also Dorian Singer. You've got big
(33:30):
targets in Alfred and King. Well, if you're guessing, give me what
you think the leading who the leadingreceiver on this team is, and what
their numbers might look like this year. Jordan, Yeah, if i'd guess,
I'd probably take Keithy just because ofthe connection him and Cam have.
Cam probably fels the most comfortable withhim. His ability to make plays after
(33:51):
the catches, I mean, reallyimpressive and hopefully that continues coming off of
his injury. But I would say, yeah, if I'm gonna if I'm
gonna bet, it's it's Keithy. And yeah, I like him, you
know, somewhere in that eight hundredyard range, probably with a lot of
catches, a lot of targets, but you know, don't be surprised,
(34:12):
like a guy like Dorian Singer whohas a ton of ability and you know
it's healthy, right. I thinkkind of Keithy is, you know,
if he can get through the years, I would say he probably is the
leading receiver. But if not, then yea, I would Dorian Singer is
probably your guy. And again it'sit doesn't necessarily have to be down the
(34:35):
field, right. I think Keithy'sshown he can, you know, get
in and out of tackles, canmake people miss it. Does a really
nice job, and so if Iwere to place a bet be on him.
No more minutes here with Jordan Winnon The Bill Riley Show today on
Utah's Number one Sports Like did whenyou watch them play a year ago?
I know, the offensive line caughtsome flak and some criticism. I mean,
(34:59):
some of that was be because thepreseason hype they were they were talking
about it being one of the betteroffensive lines of the Whittingham era. But
as I watched it, I didn'tthink they were bad last year. Maybe
they weren't, e lead Jordan, but maybe maybe some of the issues they
dealt with were you know, totaloffensive deals where maybe a pocket was good
(35:19):
and a quarterback decided to leave thepocket when he shouldn't have left the pocket.
Things like that. I'm just curiouswhat you read when you watched last
year. Did you think the offensiveline was not good or do you think
it was okay? Yeah? Ithought they were okay. I mean there's
so many things right as a viewerof the game that it's really hard to
pinpoint. And I mean it's easyto watch and say, oh, they
(35:42):
didn't block that guy and he madethe play, and it's like maybe they're
Maybe they weren't supposed to block thatguy. Maybe that guy is the ree
key. Maybe that guy is youknow, the qv should have changed the
protection to make sure he was protected, you know. So I didn't think
they were bad. I think, you know, all around, I just
think, I mean, that offenseis limping in an out of games with
(36:04):
all the injuries, and anytime youdon't have your main guy, it's,
uh, you know, it's difficult. And so I don't think they were
too bad. I think expectations werereally high, which is is difficult,
you know, in all facets oflife. Is I feel like managing expectations
(36:24):
can get you a long way ifyou're if you're good at doing that.
And obviously, with the way footballis, you can't manage expectations with hype
of hype and you just got torun with it. But I didn't think
they were too bad. And againI think, you know, we don't
know what we don't know. It'shard to really grade them, you know,
just based on scheme and strategy andthings like that. It's it's difficult
(36:47):
unless you're in the in the room, you know, watching the film with
them. So again I think thatgroup has been pretty solid for a really
long time, And yeah, Ididn't think it was necessarily too bad of
the year. A couple more thingsand I'll cut you loose. Doctor Jordan
win with us here today and itoperates on knees then, not really in
(37:09):
operating rooms, though at least heused to be. When you watch this
team play, obviously there's questions thatjust don't get answered. What's the biggest
curiosity or question you have about thisgroup that maybe doesn't get answered till fall
camp, or maybe doesn't get answeredtill a game or two into the season.
Is there something in your mind onone side of the ball or the
(37:30):
other and you're curious about it,but it's not really going to have an
answer right now. I don't knowif there's necessarily too much curiosity, more
just excitement about the two transfer receivers, the Syracuse kid and singer and really
seeing you know, I still thinkit's one thing to do and in practice
and it's a totally different thing comegame time. I'm really just excited to
(37:53):
watch those two guys and see whatthey're able to do, see how you
know, lud gets them the ball. So like for so many years,
we were talking about, you know, if they can figure out the receiver
room, if they can if theycan make big plays, and there was
like somewhat of an answer, youknow, during the concaid and keep the
(38:14):
year together. I think I'm justmost excited to watch that. I think,
you know, the Syracuse kid onpaper is like I mean, when
you play video games and you createa player that's like exactly what you want,
you know, there's there's nothing reallythat's less there too to need,
And so I got like that,I mean, just just excited to see
(38:37):
what he does. And then youknow the other I guess more curiosity,
not necessarily with the team, butjust this conference curiosity what that's going to
look like. You know, howteams handle coming in the right ecles,
how Utaw handles some of these roadtrips. Obviously, the the expectation is
(39:00):
pretty high, I think due tothe you know, for lack of a
better term, not as competitive asa league. And I don't want to
take anything away from this league.I still think it's a good league,
but the team being able to managethat and not get caught up in it
and go out and handle business anddo what you're supposed to do. It's
(39:21):
it's still difficult to do week inand week out. And so I think
those couple of things are what I'mexcited for and kind of curious about with
this season. And then you know, the landscape of college football, the
hole where that goes from here isI mean real crazy. Uh. The
next five years I think are goingto be something to watch for sure.
(39:43):
Uh, the bit of the wildWest that continues to get more wild each
day. It seems like, uh, you're a former player, and most
former players have had the same answer. But I'm sure you have friends or
no people that that don't like theb YU game for whatever reason, and
we're like, didn't want to continuethat series. But as a former player,
are you glad that it's not onlya regular now but it's also part
(40:06):
of a conference deal? Yeah?I love that game. I'm a big,
big, big proponent of that gameshould be played every year, whether
we're in the same conference or not. I'm a little disappointed that it's not
the last game of the season, frankly, because that game is so fun
and I know that there's plenty ofpeople that don't want it to continue,
(40:27):
But that's what makes college football sogreat, in my opinion, is the
rivalry games. And the second thatyou take that away, I mean,
you know, it's part of whatmakes what makes the sport, you know,
filled with so much passion. AndI tell people all the time that
aren't from the state of Utah,I'm like, and say, you've been
to one of those games. Youdon't, you have no idea what it's
(40:50):
like. And I would throw itin there, you know, in the
top five, maybe even in thetop three in terms of college football rivalries,
and people kind of look at mea little different when I say that.
I'm like, and so you arein that environment, you know,
outside of like Michigan and Ohio State, Gosh, there's not a whole lot
other I mean, Alabama Auburn obviouslygets pretty wild. But aside from those
(41:14):
two, I don't know if there'syou know, a bigger rivalry in college
football that is filled with more emotionand really gets I mean, name another
rivalry game that like separates families forthe week. I don't think there's very
many. And I'm excited. Ilive down in Lehigh and I'm getting already
(41:38):
hit up about it, and I'mlike, why don't you guys you know,
come on up, come on upto the game with me, and
you know, let's see how thatgoes for you. And so I'm ecstatic
about it. I hope it.I really hope they continue to play it
every year. I think it shouldbe played every year. It doesn't matter
where the programs are trajectory wise, win wise, a conference there in.
(42:01):
It's such a fun game, filledwith so much passion and emotion that it
should be played every season. AndI look back at my career, those
were, you know, some ofthe funnest games and some of the toughest
losses, you know, the oneand O nine my freshman year down there.
And that's what you want. That'swhat you expect when you play college
football. Enough has been stripped awayfrom college athletics in the last few years.
(42:24):
If we can if we can keepa rivalry like this is the best
part of this rivalry to Jordan isit's now on a kind of a national
stage. It's in a power league. It's not in the whack on the
Mountain West or and so it maybecome immediately since Oklahoma Texas are leaving,
it may be the best rivalry inthe Big Twelve in year one. Yeah,
I think so that's a that's agood point and that yeah. I
(42:45):
mean we've taken so much away, like let's keep this, Uh, this
game should be played year in andyear out. And again, you know,
I don't understand the argument why Ishouldn't be played, frankly, and
I've heard it all, and youknow, people have some semi decent reasons.
But until you're out on the untilyou're out on the field, in
(43:07):
that environment, in that game,I mean, that's what it's all about.
So hopefully they continue it. I'vesaid this before and I'll say it
again. I've been this will bemy sixteenth years the Voice of the Utes,
and with all the great PAC twelvegames that I got to call over
the last thirteen years, I willstill say of my ten favorite Utah football
broadcasts, at least four or fiveof them are BYU games. I mean,
(43:30):
you think about the games I've called. I called the Beck to Harlean
game, I called the Third Timeas the Charm game, I called the
Bird Block game, I called theJohn White Going Crazy game. I mean,
there have been so many great gamesin that series, and I'm just
don't don't try to tell me thatgame shouldn't be played. Yeah, and
(43:50):
that's I mean, like you justrattled off so many memories off the top
of your head in seconds, Likethat's what it's about. I mean I
have the same you know. It'sYeah. In twenty ten, Brandon blocking
the field goal, the huge, huge win down there in eleven the I
mean, gosh, in twelve,I watched the last two field goal attempts
with my roommates who were not onthe team, by the way, because
(44:13):
they have already stored the fields.I mean, like that game is you
know what makes football so great?College football so great? And then you
know in this state where you know, aside from the jazz, this is
it like it's yeah, it's almostevery year, without a doubt in my
mind. Hey, this will bethe last time we chat here on the
(44:35):
air. We'll see each other andthings like that. But I just wanted
to say thanks for always being willingto come on the air and talk football.
And whether you were a player andassistant or now just you know,
a great orthopedic doctor who will justspend a few times a few minutes out
of his day, I've always appreciatedit. So thanks for doing it.
Jordan. Yeah, no I have. I've thoroughly enjoyed. It will definitely
(44:59):
still be seen other and I appreciateall you've done. You've been the voice
for a long time, and youknow I'll be I'll be the first and
hopefully followed by many, many morethat I've been on this week. But
you've always you've always done it theright way, and that's something that I've
respected in a profession that that canbe a little difficult navigating relationships for players
(45:22):
and coaches and things like that, and so I appreciate you. Bill.
I've always had fun. We'll continueto have fun. And best of luck
with the new gig. I knowit's going to be awesome and we'll be
in touch. Hey, Jordan, thanks did give my fanily and give the
family my best. I'll talk toyou soon. I will for sure a
few Bill. There is Jordan winwith us here at the Bill Riley Show
today. Always always, I say, one of my favorites. I've got
(45:44):
so many guys that I've just createdgreat relationships with over the years. But
you know, guys that I wasable to call their games and then they
become guests and things like that makeit just so much fun. When you
know these guys since they were eighteenyears old stepping on campus, and then
you see these guys all grown upwith kids and families and jobs and having
(46:04):
great success. Appreciate Jordan taking afew minutes today with us here on the
Bill Riley Show. Also appreciate Braiden, Shipman and Shipman Roofing. For the
longest time, roofers have had abad name. They just have because they've
kind of given that to themselves. But there's plenty of good roofers out there.
There are, but you have tolook. You gotta be careful,
you got to do vet people, and Shipman roofing is one place you don't
(46:24):
have to worry about. Take itfrom a guy that grew up in a
roofing family whose father was in roofingfor fifty years. I know roofing.
I worked in it when I wasin college. But I know good people
too when I see them, andbraid and Shipman and his company are good
people who do excellent work, onehundred percent satisfaction guaranteed, free inspections and
quotes on roofs. Maybe you needa new roof, maybe you don't.
(46:46):
Maybe it's just a simple repair.Maybe Braidy'll get up there and say,
well, you don't need it yet, but you're about two years away from
needing a new roof, whatever itmight be. Get in touch with Braiden
and have him come out and giveyou an inspection and a quote on your
roof. He can help you outwith great, great experience to over over
decades of experience on each one ofhis teams. Find him online at chipmanrooofing
(47:07):
dot com or give him a callan eight oh one sixty six four twenty
nine oh six. That's Chipman Roofingback with some text messages from You can
talk some draft on draft Day withAndy Larson in a bit here on ESPN
seven hundred. Time to talk UtahJazz hoops with our Jazz Insider. Here,
(47:28):
I'm a Bill Riley show, greatdownsof recent games, injury updates,
trade rumors and more. Now here'sBill Riley with our Jazz Insider on Utah's
number one sports talk ESPN seven hundredand ninety two point one half m six
hours away from the NBA Draft beginningtonight, Jazz picking at number ten.
Gordy Spence and I will do somedraft coverage here beginning at six tonight,
(47:52):
Jazz at ten, twenty nine andthirty two. For now you have to
figure ten or somewhere in that rangetwenty nine and thirty two. We'll see.
Our next guest probably has a littlebit more intel on that is he
does his best to work the phonestoday to see what they may be doing
inside the jazz war room. Ourfriend Andy Larson beat Rider, Utah Jazz
Salt Like Tribune joining us on draftday today. How are you, Annie?
(48:14):
I'm good, Bill, How areyou doing? Fantastic? Just really
curious to see what the jazz mightdo. One guy we know they won't
be acquiring today or any day inthe near future is Mikhail Bridges, a
guy that was a hot name thatthey would have liked to have had somebody
like him. He's now part ofthe Villanova four with the Knicks. But
what you read today is the Jazzhit here with three picks, two of
(48:35):
the first round, one of thesecond round. Certainly a lottery pick that
could be valuable. But what's yourguest as to what you know, Zannik
in Anger thinking and doing today?Yeah, look, you know, I
think they're still going to try tobe aggressive in both the trade and the
draft market, I guess the pickand player market, but justin Dannek admitted
on Monday, But look, thisis it's hard to bet on a deal
(48:59):
happening because it takes another team tomake to accept one of your authors,
right, And I think we sawthat a little bit yesterday where yes,
the Jazz were interested in mckel bridges, certainly, but not at that price,
and frankly probably not at anything withinone or two picks of that price,
right, Like you're talking about sendingout maybe three picks and a player
(49:21):
in order to make that work, where the Knicks sent out five or six
picks and a good player of Boyantmcdonovich. So, you know, and
I think that's the problem that theJazz will continue to face in the trade
market right now, is that it'sreally a seller's market. And you know,
right they say by all indications thatthey want to buy rather than selling
(49:42):
lowry marketIn for example. So youknow, I think draft wise, I
think they are looking, you know, multiple reports and I've heard as well
that they are looking to kind ofpackage twenty nine and thirty two to move
up in the draft a little bit. Whether that gets you to the late
teams or early twenty It's not yetclear, but clearly I think there are
(50:02):
a couple of players that they havein mind that they'd like to select tonight.
Just a quick thought on the Bridgesdeal. You said the price was
too high for the Jazz. Doyou feel like the price was too high
for the Knicks, or the Knicksin a different place where they could challenge
for a championship and are willing tokind of sacrifice five years down the line
(50:22):
for McHale Bridges today. Yeah, look, I understand that line of thinking,
and yeah, you know, obviouslythey are much much closer to a
championship than the Jazz are, andso it kind of makes more sense for
them to go maybe all in onthe extra piece. But I also look
at you know, I don't Idid think they paid too much, and
(50:44):
I do think that it probably isn'tthe best thing for them to do from
a franchise point of view. Imean, I look at how the Boston
Celtics were able to acquire Chris topForzingis, Derek White and Drew Holliday for
frankly less or equivalent value to whatthe Nick just gave up, and I
think, you know, rather thanlooking at it as adding the last piece
(51:07):
they ssould be looking at adding, you know, adding not only mckel bridges,
but other pieces to that roster. And by giving up five or six
pick yesterday, I think that, you know, makes it more difficult to
make that happen, to really challengethe Celtics moving forward. Andy Larson,
Salt Lake Tribune jazz beat writer andinsider. We're talking draft today with the
Utah Jazz. You mentioned something thatI don't think most jazz fans want to
(51:30):
hear. I think most people wantthem to be buyers right now, not
sellers. Why would they say whatwould the scenario be or what would the
plan be? In your mind,Andy, if they're selling Lowry marketing,
yeah, I mean again they're they'reThe indications right now are they are want
to hold on to him. Butthe truth is that the Jazz are stuck
(51:52):
in the middle right now with Lowryand the current core that they have.
I mean, you won thirty onegames last year, you were fifteen games
out of the playoffs, even fifteengames out of the number ten spot to
play in tournament. But you arealso only drafting number ten in this year's
draft, right like it's a prettybad place to be as a franchise,
(52:13):
and so you either need to moveup or move down, right, Like,
you can't have another season like theyhad this year, and you can't
have another season like they had inthe year previous. You know, it's
just not a good place for anNBA franchise to be. And so the
case we're selling Lawry market in isbottoming out and taking advantage of the franchise
(52:34):
talents that are in the twenty twentyfive draft. I mean, that's really
what the trade was about for Brooklynis that they were able to reacquire their
picks in twenty twenty five and twentytwenty six and now all of a sudden,
have a good look at some ofthese players and rebuilding their franchise around
them, rather than sticking in thethirty to thirty five win zone where you
(52:54):
know, they don't have a lotgoing on with Bridges as their best player.
You know, I think the Jazzare in kind of a similar circumstance
with with their talent on the rosterright now. Here's the only thing I
would say, Andy, if theychose the bottom out route this year,
I would question what their what theirdirection or thought process was the last two
(53:14):
years? Does that make sense? Why are you waiting to why why would
you be waiting till year three? And I understand what it is now,
but to me, that would bea real failure in I don't know,
leadership or direction to wait three yearsto hit the reset button when then you're
then you're starting that clock up againand you're probably then four years, three
years removed from being where you wantto be. I don't know, I
(53:37):
know why they would do it,but I would question, why did you
wait till now to do it?If that's what you're doing now? Yeah,
agreed? And look, you know, I think they tried to do
that in year one of the rebuildings, you know, the year after they
traded Donovan and Rudy. I youknow, I think they thought they would
be a twenty five to thirty winteam that year. You know, I
do not think that they thought theywould be good. And then all of
(53:58):
a sudden, they started the seasontwelve than three and immediately we're out of
the Victoriambinomena race, right like, there's not even time to to trade my
comedy then, because you're you havewon so many games, so quickly,
Like, I think what you cancriticize then is how the trade deadlines the
last two years have been, uhhave have been approached? Yeah, how
(54:21):
last year in general was approached, you know, doing things like acquiring John
Collins, not giving more playing timeto the young players and so on and
so forth. Yeah, then you'reright if you if you truly think out
for year three like it is,you do, you know, start to
question the moves of the past. But I do think you know, the
(54:43):
past is the past a little bit, and you have to look at the
situation as it is now and saywhat is the best thing for the Jazz
do. And even if you've mademistakes in the past, I don't think
you can use that and let thatcolor you're thinking to make the wrong choice
now. Now, look, buyingmay still be the right choice. And
you know, you and I don'tknow the open market as well as they
(55:05):
do. And maybe there are playersavailable that will allow them to improve for
next season. But if those playersaren't out there, then I just don't
think. I think worst case scenariois going through another year like last year
next year. Talking Andy Larson forThe Salting Tribune, with the draft now
(55:25):
a little less than six hours awayfrom starting. It's much more secretive process.
Now there's no interviewing potential jazz men. There's no talking to Walt Perrin
or Gordy Chieza or any of thecoaches that work them out anymore. So
it's a lot more talking to agents, guests, work, trying to dig
around just a little bit. Doesn'tfeel like this is a top heavy draft
(55:47):
in any way, shape or form. The Jazz are a ten. Zanik
has said, what do you saytwo days ago, we already know if
the draft was now, we knowwho we take, and they want to
take the best player. So what'syour sense of tonight hanging tight at ten?
Do you think there's somebody they reallyliked they'd move up to get in
the five, four, five sixrange? What's your what's your gauge for
(56:07):
tonight? Andy? Yeah, youknow, again, I think staying at
ten as most likely, and Ithink they do have one or two players
in minds, you know, especiallyhoping that a you know, multiple reports
have said that Cody Williams would bea guy that they're interested at taking a
number ten if he's available. Youknow, both Tony Jones and rafaie L
Barlow reported that and I, youknow, I think that makes sense for
(56:30):
the Jazz is you know, anotheryoung wing player who you're certainly going to
have to develop and and certainly, you know, probably not ready to play
major NBA minutes, but you lovethe potential given what he can be in
his his size's length, his willingnessto pass the ball, skill on defense,
and so on. Jonathan Givoni atESPN reported that, yes, look,
(56:53):
they're they're interested in trading up tomaybe number five, get a Stefan
Castle or a player like that. That's really interesting as well, And I
think most draft analysts would put Castleas a slightly better prospect than Williams,
just because he's a probably a littlebit more accomplished playing act, playing as
(57:17):
well as he did last year, playing as part of a good team last
year. You know, I thinkit's it's going to be interesting to see
if they're willing what they would giveup in order to move up those five
slots. But then, you know, the worry with Castle is the shooting
side of things, where I thinkTod Williams didn't shooting much last year but
(57:39):
did make a higher percentage of histhree point shots. So interesting question.
For sure, you know, Ithink again, ultimately most likely as they
stay at number ten, but well, we'll see in the next six hours
if they stay at ten. Isthere a guy you like that could be
in that range? Again, it'sguess work, but we have a pretty
good idea who's in that eight totwelve or thirteen range? For me,
(58:00):
I know that what they did ayear ago in Keyante George, but a
guy that could be there. Ireally like Rob Dillingham a lot, and
I don't know if he would beat ten, but the pedigree of Kentucky
point guards his explosiveness. He feelsmore like a guy that could play point.
I don't know, but I wouldn'tmind seeing Dillingham. But if you
do that, you're pretty much sayingKiante George isn't our guy, and he's
(58:23):
likely to be a guy coming offthe bench. But I'm not so sure.
Danny Ainge didn't hint at that alreadyanyway. Yeah, and you know
it's funny. I don't love Dillinghamas a prospect at all, just because
of the defense, right Like,I do think he's a bad defensive player.
I think he might be the worstdefensive player in this draft, and
I'm worried about his comments where hesaid he doesn't particularly care about playing the
(58:46):
defensive end, right, Like Ido think he's very talented offensively, you
know, maybe the best shooting andpassing combination in the draft. I want
guys who played defense on this teamthat finished last in the league defensively last
year. Right, But you're rightthat, you know, Ben, you
have two kind of small guards withKiante and Rob Dillingham as as a backboard,
(59:07):
and I don't know that either canreally work as a NBA shooting guard.
So you know, I would probablytake Keanty George over Rob Dillingham right
now as a prospect. But youknow, I don't know if the Jazz
agree or disagree with me. Iyou know, I think, to me,
(59:27):
at number ten, I'm looking forsomeone with more size and look,
I think there are a bunch ofwings in this class who I don't love,
and none of them I'm sure aregoing to be good NBA players,
But I think they're you know,a certain number of them are going to
work out. So whether that's CodyWilliams, Romatis Buzsella, to Ron Holland
or to John Solon or like anyof these kind of lengthy wing players who
(59:52):
can kind of maybe more theoretically thananything but shoot past, defend, dribble
and and you can put your developmentstaff on them and have them improve over
the course of a number of years. Like I think that's probably the direction
I would go with with the numberten pick if I were in charge.
Yeah, I know, Gordy wasa big fan of Ron Holland as a
(01:00:14):
kind of a three and D typewing whose offense could come along at some
point in time. Yeah, Andyou know, it's funny, Gordy and
I watched Ron Holland's play against theSalt Lake City Stars and he had his
worst game of the season, putup eleven turnovers, and I, you
know, we just were kind oftalking about it and watching that game together,
(01:00:36):
and you know, it's it was. He was struggling so badly,
making such bad decisions as a pointguard on that team. He's not a
point guard and he shouldn't be drivingthat much. And I think if you
found a role for him where hewas willing to be a three and D
guy, maybe more emphasis on theD than the three. Frankly, given
(01:00:57):
how poorly he shot last year, but I think he could be a helpful
player. But yeah, definitely needsa lot of development, multiple ways to
be a solid NBA player, youknow, let alone a starter or a
star. Who's the player you lovein this draft? Andy, anywhere in
the draft, you know it couldbe a late time. You know.
I was a big Homi Hokke asfan when he was at UCLA, And
(01:01:17):
when Miami drafted him last year,I said, well, that guy's going
to be a good play. Ididn't think he'd had the rookie year he
did, but I thought, well, he's a perfect fit. But you
know, anywhere in the draft, give me a guy that you've watched tape
on. He watched him play andhe just really really like him and think
he translates well. Yeah, twoguys. I mean, I think at
the top of the draft, Ilike Ryan. I like Reed Shepherd a
(01:01:37):
lot. You know, I thinkhis ability to shoot, and I think
he's one of the best, ifnot the best, shooter in the class.
I think he projects out extremely well. And then just the defensive impact
I think reminds me of some ofthe guards we just saw in the NBA
Finals, like and Drew Holliday, like a Derek White, and I do
(01:01:59):
just think that even though he's shorterat six' two, you know,
like, I think he can makea difference on the defensive end in the
NBA, and then I love kindof on the other end of things that
at the bottom end of the draft, Ryan Dunn is probably is one of
the best defensive wing players I've seenplay college basketball. I mean, just
(01:02:22):
what he does individually in isolation,as a help defender in transition, it's
awesome to watch. Like, ifyou have time today, you know,
Bill's audience, go watch a RyanDunn defensive YouTube clip because it's just the
highlight reel is awesome, is somuch fun. He can't play offense right
(01:02:44):
now at all. You just hopethat, like the Lou Dortz or the
Herb Joneses of the world, thathe can develop a shot and then be
a really useful player. I beton him to do that. You know,
I'm not saying he's going to bea good shooter year one, but
I'll take someone who has his defensiveskills and tools and see if I can
teach them a little bit of offense. You know, kind of any day,
(01:03:06):
especially given where he's currently you knowslated to be drafted, which is
at the bottom of the first round. I was about to say, if
the Jazz keep twenty nine, hemight be there, right He might be.
You know that the ESPN analytics saythere's about a forty percent chance that
he'd be available at number twenty nine. The word is that the Knicks are
interested in him with maybe one ofthe twenty four and twenty five picks,
(01:03:27):
so you know, you might haveto move up to get him. But
as we discussed before, the Jazzare apparently interested in packaging twenty nine and
thirty two to move up and we'llsee who the player they have in mind
is if they do that, Imean, can the Knicks collect a few
more wing players? Holy moly,if the Ryan done too, they got
o g Nnoby might be the oddman out right now. Plus you've got
Josh Hart, plus you've just youhad in McHale Bridges last night. They're
(01:03:52):
just silly with wings right now,and that might be the way to go.
That might be the direction you needto go in today's NBA. There
are a lot of NBA decision makerswho are thinking that way right now.
Is if if you have five solidwings, on your roster that you can
play kind of all at once. And you know, obviously they've got Jalen
Brunson, so they're going to beplaying him to the majority of the game.
Don't get me wrong, but youhave such versatility. You can switch
(01:04:15):
nearly everything. You can, youcan playmake, you can take advantage of
your size by by stopping other players. You can guard the likes of Luka
doncic One on one. I mean, it's just it gives you a lot
of tactical flexibility that you know,we found out is really valuable in the
playoffs. And you when when weknow the direction the Jazz are taking first
(01:04:38):
week of free agency, second weekof free agency. Obviously, if they
deal low remarking in early, thatwill obviously tell us. But you know,
if they're not loading up with evensecondary guys in free agency, does
that tell us they're taking a differentdirection. Yeah. Look, you know,
I think we'll know in the nextweek. You know, I think
there's a possibility that a move happenstonight. Right Like, the draft is
(01:04:59):
a significant trade market, and youknow, I think you could see them
do something there. If not,you know, the NBA free agency starts
on Sunday at two pm Mountain time, and teams can negotiate. I'm sure
we'll hear about them deals, andwe'll learn whether the Jazz use their free
agent cap space, you know aboutforty million dollars, if they use that
(01:05:23):
on acquiring the likes of Tobias Harris, or if they instead maybe leave that
open to trade up, you know, trade for a bad contract in the
NBA and get another draft pick. You know, I think that's when we
we'd really start to see is Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, what their plans
are for all that cap space thatthey have that you know, the the
(01:05:44):
NBA salary floor will say that theyhave to use most of it. So,
if you're hazarding a guess right now, and this is a wild guess,
do you think the Jazz go inthat direction or do you think that
they try to build and as theysaid, take the big swing, go
big game hunting this U I don'tthink, I know, I think they
have tried and will try to gobig game hunting. I just don't think
(01:06:05):
they're going to be able to inany kind of logical way, right Like
I don't think they're interested in ZachLavine I do think, you know,
they were interested in Bridges, butnot at that price, and I think
they're going to find the prices aretoo high for the players that they want,
and so, you know, Ithink ultimately they're going to keep the
stash a little bit, maybe tryto build it a little bit more,
(01:06:26):
and remain patient. We'll see ifthat right opportunity to big game hunt comes
up, but by most indications, that's not out there right now, and
so we'll we'll have to see whatthey do. I mean, I think
there was a world where like,if you get mckel bridges, then you
can get you can get a thirdstar on top of that and kind of
(01:06:49):
put together a team that's not achampionship contender but a playoff contender. It's
going to be hard to do thatbased on who's out there on the free
market in the trade market right now. So this leads me to this,
and I hate to be the doomsdayguy, but if they don't make significant
changes or upgrades this summer, doesthat impact Lowry Markanin's decision to sign a
(01:07:12):
long term deal with the Jets. He's twenty seven, he's entering his prime.
But if he doesn't see tangible progressthis summer. Does he want to
sign a long term deal with theUtah Jazz. Yeah, it's a good
question, it's a great question.I think, you know, first of
all, Lowry likes it in Utah, I think more than other NBA stars
have and will. I think hedoes like living here. But he also,
(01:07:36):
you know, in multiple conversations thisyear, expressed to us over and
over again how much he wants towin right and how he needs to make
a playoffs for the first time inhis career. And it's not anything he's
done wrong that has prevented that, but he's just you know, it hasn't
been he hasn't had the supporting castaround him in Utah, and then he
(01:08:00):
wasn't quite this player in Chicago andCleveland. So I think he probably would
because in the end, it's goingto be difficult for him to turn down
five years, two hundred and fiftymillion dollars or whatever a long term extension
looks like. But I I dothink that it's you know, that will
(01:08:20):
be part of the conversation, isHey, in order for me to sign
on the dotted line, I needto agree with the future of this franchise
and whether that's a you know, they actually lay out the long term plan
to him and he has to agreeto that, or if there's you know,
something that they believe is coming downthe pipeline, whatever it is,
(01:08:42):
you know, him and his agencyare going to ask about the plan.
They're not going to just take themoney and run without you know, kind
of any indication of what they're goingto be doing moving forward. Uh.
Draft covers tonight here with me andSpence and Gordy for a few hours,
and then plenty of stuff at sltripdot com with Andy Larson coming up as
well. More interest right now inCopa or Euros. For you, Euros
(01:09:03):
by a pretty significant margin. Eventhough you know, love the US,
Argentina is often to watch, etcetera, et cetera. The Euros are
a better tournament, Like the buildingsare full, and the teams. You
know, obviously you're getting the topEuropean teams and top European players. Like
I just think the atmosphere and thedrama is a lot higher in in the
(01:09:26):
Euros than Copa America is right now. I yeah, I agree. I
think by the time they get tothe knockout round, it gets better but
you're right early rounds every stadium inGermany's been full for every match. So
but but again in fairness, asyou know, you can hop on a
train or hop in your car andgo from Denmark to Germany in seven hours,
(01:09:48):
so you know, you can't reallyhop in your car and Buenos Aires
and be in Dallas to watch Argentinaplay in in seven hours. Absolutely,
And then I'll also say that it'sjust like I think the dedication of the
European fans is awesome. I meanwhen I went to the Euros in France,
I guess, yeah, eight yearsago now, we went to Portugal
(01:10:09):
Iceland match and we heard from themedia reporter to that that one tenth of
the population of Iceland had traveled toFrance to watch the game in stadium,
right, Like, think about that. That's incredible, And you know,
the passion, the atmosphere, thechanting, I mean, everyone's standing all
game. It's it's awesome. AndCopo America does have some of that,
(01:10:32):
and there's some great like uh,you know, Colombian fans and Ecuadorian fans,
Improvium fans and so on and soforth, but it's they're they're not
filling the buildings. I think theComo ball charged much for tickets like with
it, it's just a different vibefor sure. Andy. Uh. Probably
the last chance we chat on theair won't be the last chance we ever
(01:10:54):
chat. But I just want tosay thank you for all the years of
coming on and talking who hoops andsoccer and all that stuff. And as
I've told you before and I've saidon these airwaves, there's a lot of
people that I really admire in ourbusiness in this market to do great work.
But I've always admired yours because youtook an untraditional path and just followed
(01:11:15):
your passion and turned it into what'sbeen a terrific and growing career. So
I've always admired that. But I'vealways really appreciated you coming on the show
with me and just talking sports.Well, thanks, Bill, And I
want to say, like, youknow, I grew up listening to you,
right, like I remember you onon KSL and calling into your radio
show and wanting to talk Uta Starsbasketball right the WNBA team and we're talking
(01:11:40):
that and jazz, and I youknow, I think part of why I
do have that passion for basketball andsports in this market is because I got
to listen to you growing up andyour show and just learning about the games
and that I loved and kind ofdeveloping that through you doing this every day.
So thank you for that, andthank you for always supporting my career
(01:12:02):
for the last decade plus. It'sbeen I appreciate it the time. You're
very welcome, and let's both keepit rolling. Thanks Andy, Thanks will
there you go, the great AndyLarson. I told you there's guys that
I just admire the hell out ofand he and I mentioned Bartle yesterday,
guys that took an untraditional path butfollowed their passion and their love and turned
(01:12:25):
it into an unbelievable career. Andthen he just made me feel really old,
telling me you used to call intomy show at night on KSL too.
Funny. Great guy Andy Larson.Appreciate him? Did they read his
stuff of the draft tonight at sltripdot com. Thanks to Jersey Mikes for
being a great partner of ours hereon the ESPN seven hundred. Jersey Mikes,
(01:12:45):
they are a sub above forty UTah locations, lunch, dinner,
and in between, hot subs, cold subs, you name it, it's
Jersey Mikes. Quick time out backto talk a little Utah basketball next with
head new assistant coach David Evans hereon the Bill Riley Show on the ESPN's
of a Nun. Let's get thelatest on Utah mensops with a Running Utes
(01:13:10):
Insider here on the Bill Rivey Show, brought to you by Lesselsen. It
the Voice of the Utes catches upwith various members of the program, from
head coach Craig Smith to assisted coachesand players. Now, let's get to
the Running Utes Insider right here onyour Home of the Utes ESPN seven hundred
and ninety to one a f M. So, over the last couple of
weeks, we've talked to some ofthe new guys on the roster. Craig's
(01:13:33):
got to flip that roster again thisyear, and his coaching rosters flipped as
well. We've caught up with acouple of the new coaches. One of
the latest hires who is very familiarwith this date. We don't have to
welcome him to the State of Utah, which is welcoming back to the State
of Utah is David Evans, ofcourse, a very successful coach on the
(01:13:53):
prep level, RSL Academy, WassatchAcademy, Lone Peak High School. He
knows this state pretty well, joinsCraig Staff. David, how are you.
I'm doing well. How are yougood? To have you on the
show today. Welcome back to Utah. Are you getting settled back in again?
Ah? Yeah, but you know, the coach has got us going.
So we're out on the road andwe're at practice, and so I
(01:14:15):
think I've been in the building andon the road more than I've been anywhere
else. So it's been great.David. You've got two scholarships to fill.
You're going into the Big twelve. You need bodies. Get those dudes
signed, David. We're about there, my man. So you'll see some
kids pretty soon here. That'll begreat. Nice kids, that'll be great.
What have you made of the rosterso far? I mean, you're
(01:14:36):
you haven't been around a bunch, been on the road. You just got
hired a couple of weeks ago,but you've had a little bit of time
to kind of take stock at wherethis roster is. Only a couple of
faces back from last year's team,a lot of new faces. But what
do you make of what it lookslike right now, you know, I
think this is one thing that peoplehave asked mebut like a little bit lately,
(01:14:56):
and I think from the hour lookingin it's you know, Coach Smith
is really good at kind of keepingthings close to him. And so when
I when I came in, Iwas really really excited, Like that's the
best way to say. We've gotsome fantastic talent, fantastic work ethic,
and some just really good players. And they're they're not just that, they're
players that and people that the fanscan be proud of. It's I'm like
(01:15:21):
super excited. Well that's good.I know people. You know again,
people are still getting used to thefact, David, that the way of
the world now is rosters change everyyear. They don't just change at Utah
or b Yu or Utah State. They change at Kansas and Duke and UCLA.
That's just the way of the world. But in this way of the
(01:15:42):
world, then you kind of haveto learn some new guys. So you've
looked at this roster and you seesome of these guys that you're here and
excited about. We talked to Wetalked to Ezra after he broke the backboard
the other day at practice, We'vetalked to We've talked to Zach Keller a
little bit. I had Keanu Daweson the other day too. It's an
interesting mix of guys. What wouldyou say kind of is the strength of
(01:16:04):
this roster right now? Well, coach coaches like a certain kind of kid,
and he's got some. The thingI think that was the biggest most
exciting thing to me is our size, Like we're really we still need to
fill in another big or so,but like our Ezra, like Katie,
(01:16:27):
the guys you're talking about, youknow, when we get Caleb Lohaner from
football, Mongolian Mike, that's they'rereally big guys, Like you could throw
a lineup in there that was likesix eight and above, and so that
was actually really exciting. But thenyou've also got some high, high level
shooting, which you know, asa prep coach, I love shooters,
(01:16:48):
and so we've got some really goodshooters in the squad as well. So
you mentioned a little bit more size. You've got a terrific prospected point guard,
Miro Little is a guy that pI know Craig is really excited about.
And then you've got Hunter Erickson onthere too. Would you guys like
to add another I don't know ifI always hesitate to even say point guard,
(01:17:09):
but would would you like to addanother you know, primary ball hand
or somebody that can kind of initiatethe offense? Yes, you know,
I think that's that's something we're lookingat as well. Mongolian Mike has also
played a lot of point guard inthe past. Mirrow Merrow, I think
is a really special kid. Iwent to Finland and recruited him when he
(01:17:30):
was a junior in high school andhe he has a chance to be really
really special. He approaches the gamekind of older than his years. Hunter
Erickson is very good, but it'salways good to have, you know,
another point guard as you know, yep, David Evans with us here joining
the Utah basketball program on Craig's coachingstaff. You know this state very well
(01:17:53):
obviously with your roles at RSL Academy, Wassatch Academy, Loan Peak as well.
How would you say the overall levelof and I know RSL in wash
Thatt you're a little bit different becauseof the academy part of it, but
how would you grade today versus maybewhen you got into it? A decade
or so ago coaching in this state. How would you kind of overall rate
the high school talent right now?Well, that is a really good question.
(01:18:18):
I think it's so I was justin Phoenix this last week, and
I think this might be a goodway to kind of describe it. And
so you have section seven. Ifyou know, the fans of basketball haven't
had a chance to go there. It's a fantastic event because it's their high
school teams. These kids are playingon their high school teams and they play
(01:18:39):
the right way. They're sharing theball and they're moving the ball. So
it's really great to watch as afan. But overall you have Utah Prep
was there and so that's what RSLnow is called UTAP Prep and they are
in the prep division. We hada chance to watch them. And then
in the regular division you have somany teams as a whole, the Utah
(01:19:00):
teams were fantastic and there's so manyhigh level Division One players in those in
those groups, I think as awhole, basketball in Utah. You know,
people love basketball here though they lovedsports in general here in Utah,
and it was really great to seekind of like how the level head keeps
(01:19:21):
improving. The kids are getting morephysical, they're understanding physicality and they're keeping
that up with their skill and it'spretty great. I don't know if you
ever saw my Loan Peak team andwe went and played in the national tournament.
We played R. J. Barrettagain and Mott Bird in the National
Championship about that's probably eight years now, and I always stick by that.
(01:19:42):
Like Utah teams, we lost atthe buzzer. You know, Stephen Ashworth,
he had twenty nine points in thesecond half, like he was incredible.
We lost at the buzzer of thatgame. And that team, I
think that mont Bird team has fiveNBA guys on that team. So it's
it's very doable to play the rightway, to share the ball and still
compete at the highest level. Yeah, I remember those Loan Peak teams,
(01:20:03):
Your Team's Quincy's teams, all thoseteams they always yeah, all those I
mean all of them though, theyall they all competed when you went and
played nationally. And I think thatand you saw this, whether you were
at RSL or whether you were atLoan Peak. You go to those tournaments
and there's a there's a there's aa stereotype about Utah basketball teams until you
(01:20:25):
step until you step out on thefloor and then all of a sudden,
you know, you guys may notwin the layup line battle or the getting
off the bus battle, but onceonce that game begins, you know.
And I talked to my buddy EveryettGray about it all the time because his
Rebel teams go all over the countryand they compete too. His Corner Canyon
teams do that too, And soyou guys go and represent pretty well nationally.
(01:20:48):
Yeah, Everyck does a great job. Like he's a great coach.
He does a great job, andhe like helps develop these kids. You
know, when I was at watchthat it was a little bit different story,
but we did have a lot.You know, I had a couple
of kids that are at DYU.But when I was at RSL, we
have David Katoa who signed here andas a freshman he played against Kiante George
(01:21:11):
at the highest level, and uh, it was it was amazing. David
played amazing against Kiante George. Yeah, yeah, and I understand. Craig
told me that, you know, his shots improved a great deal since you
first had him at RSL. Hereally he's after the injury, hint came
back. He's he's gotten stronger, certainly because that family should aren't athletic.
(01:21:31):
But but apparently his his shot, which wasn't great before, it got a
lot better his senior year this year. I think. So he was always
a good shooter, like a solidshooter, you know, like when he
when he shot it, I expectedit to go in, like, but
now he's just a knockdown shooter.And he's like you said, he's that
family. I think seven kids, all Division one athletes. He's a freak
(01:21:53):
athlete. It's really special. Notjust him, his brothers and sisters.
Some of them are freak athletes too. We're talking to David Evans here on
the Bill Riley Show today. What'sCraig kind of you know, everybody's got
a little bit different role on thestaff. I know I talked to coach
Islet the other day. I thinkhe's going to be coaching bigs. What's
going to be your role, David, So primarily recruiting international and in the
(01:22:14):
state here a little bit of California, and then skill development for the guards
and helping out I think actually skilleddevelopment kind of all maybe all around helping
out with Josh and the forwards andthe guards. But yeah, it's I'm
still kind of you know, cuttingmy teeth, you know, and figuring
out exactly, but it's it's it'samazing here. The culture. Craig has
(01:22:39):
done an amazing job, Like Ithink one of the neatest things for me
to see as an out we're lookingin. I don't think people understand or
I didn't understand I should say that, like what he's put together and the
culture that he's created. You know, there's no egos across the coach's staff.
They players are so down to earthand it's just really refreshing to come
(01:23:01):
to work every day and just bein this environment. Yeah, he's I
think, just keep building on thesuccess of the last few years. You
know, it's getting better every year. For those of you that weren't big
followers of BYU Hawaii Seasider basketball atthe turn of the century, the guy
I'm talking to right now could fillit up just a little bit. I
believe. I believe now he'll correctme. I'm sure he may still be
(01:23:25):
the schools all time leading scorer twentytwenty fifty three points and average twenty eight
a game your senior year, Idid. Yeah, well I shot the
ball probably too much now, butyeah, but yeah, that was like
just what. I was a scorer, you know, and so I had
(01:23:46):
like a couple of NBA tryouts, didn't make it, so went overseas for
a little bit. But I loveya Hawaii. That love the Seasiders.
But no more sports there. It'scrazy, I know more sports. Well,
by the way, twenty eight agame. How many assists a game
that senior year, David average aboutfour or sis about seven rebounds? I
shot it should have done better onthe rebounds, but Coach Wagner had come
(01:24:09):
up with me before the games andhit say, I need ten boards and
thirty points tonight, right, coach, Hey, twenty eight to seven and
four is not a bad stat line. I mean, if you can occasionally
get that two double figure on eitherone of those, that's not bad.
If if you told Coach Wagner I'mgoing to give you twenty eight seven and
four every game this year, Ithink it would have taken that and taken
(01:24:30):
that and run. Yeah, hewas really good to me. It's a
great place, you know. Haveyou been out there to the island.
I've been out to the islands.I've never been to the campus, though
I've been to I've been to.The only island I've not been to is
the Big Island. But I've beento every other island. So that's fantastic.
Hey, before I let you go, now that you've been around it
a little bit, it's a trueI mean, the PAC twelve was a
fantastic conference. You know it.You grew up in the West, you
(01:24:54):
know all about that stuff. Buthey, it's gone now you guys are
now transitioning in do the best conference, and really, frankly it's not close,
especially now with the four new teamscoming in. The Big twelve is
an absolute wagon. What's what's thebiggest adjustment, if any, that you
guys have to make in entering thisconference. Maybe it's personnel, maybe it's
(01:25:15):
mindset. Maybe I don't know,but you're entering the toughest league. It's
gonna be a it's gonna be aquad one just about every night you play.
So what's the uh, what's theapproaches you guys transition into that league?
David, I think that is aphenomenal question because the Pact twelve,
in my opinion, is physical butit's you know, it's a little more
finesse. The Big twelve is dogs, you know, like we have to
(01:25:38):
have that junkyard dog mentality. Wehave to have a high, high level
of toughness. We can't be entitled. We have to be humble and we've
got to be physical. And that'sthe mentality we have to approach this this
thing with. And that's what washappening right now. We you know,
everything that we do in practice andskill development now has We have defenders and
(01:26:00):
pads going at you know, atthe boys and at the team like we
are trying to prepare them the bestwe can to prepare for the physicality of
the Big twelve. And that's that'swhat we've got to be ready for.
Because we've got shooters, you know, we can spread them out, but
we've got to be ready for everythingelse. And they have this I'm so
exciting about it. Yeah, theyhave everything else in that league for sure.
(01:26:23):
Well, hey, thanks for doingthis today. I'll look forward to
seeing you. I'll be obviously onthe road with you guys this year calling

Riley Show. We'll take a quicktime out back after this. On ESPN
(01:30:00):
seven hundred, you were listening toabout three times Utah Sports Broadcaster of the
Year. This is the Bill RileyShow, presented by Leshwab Tires on Utah's
number one sports talk ESPN seven hundreds. Great to be with you on this
(01:30:30):
Wednesday. As we head toward oneo'clock, Andy Bailey and our Philip Andy
is today. Andy Larson joined usearlier this hour. Andy Bailey will join
us coming up at about what thirtytoday, get his thoughts on the draft,
which is tonight. Our coverage beginsat six. After the drive,
myself, Spence and Gordy, we'llget together talk some NBA draft for a
couple of hours, one last timewith the band back together again. We'll
(01:30:54):
do that tonight at six o'clock righthere on ESPN seven hundred. And hopefully
the Jazz don't trade back or tradeout, they keep that at least keep
that ten pick. Give us alittle something to talk about tonight. From
the Euros today, Slovakia and Romaniatied at one one. That was a
final. Ukraine and Belgium tiede zerozero. That's a final. Georgia and
(01:31:15):
Portual a little bit about ready togo. Portuguese should tune them up pretty
easy. And then to check Republicand Turk Turke whatever they're calling themselves.
Now we'll be going in about oneo'clock as well tonight Copa America. Ecuador
and Jamaica and then Mexico and Venezuelago tonight in Copa America. I agree
(01:31:38):
with Andy. Right now the Eurosare more a more compelling watch than Copa
America. But I think once theyget to the elimination stage of Copa it
will become some pretty much see TVas well. By the way, speaking
of soccer and era ends today inwomen's soccer, Alex Morgan not on the
United States Olympic team. They shouldhave done this the last World Cup.
(01:32:01):
It's something that's probably needed to happen. The United States women's national team that
was so dominant for so very long, got kind of stale and relied on
the old guard a little too long, the Ripinos, the Morgans, the
Heaths and those for Bobby a littlebit too le Kelly O'Hara's and they got
caught kind of in transition. Theyhad a really really young group and a
(01:32:25):
really really old group and really nothingin between. So now maybe they're women's
coach Emma Hayes, who just tookover is going to maybe try to change
that just a little bit. Weshall see, but Alex Morgan will not
be representing the Red, White andBlue in the twenty twenty four Olympic Games
this summer in Paris. She's hada good run. She was in the
(01:32:45):
twelve, the sixteen, and thetwenty Olympics. She's had a good run.
Morgan's thirty five years old. She'shad an amazing run. Her career
is not over yet, but yourcareer with the national team generally ends before
your other career ends, So anyway, she will not be part of the
national team pool hockey. The draftis coming up. James Peterson's going to
(01:33:06):
be covering the draft for US comingup on Friday down in Las Vegas and
James Day after the NBA draft. The Utah Hockey Club, we already know
they're picking number six in the firstround, but were there subsequent picks in
the next couple of rounds. Yeah, NHL PR just released the entire draft
(01:33:27):
order for all seven rounds, soit's it's NFL draft like with the seventh
round draft. Utah, as yousaid, sixth in the first round,
they have three picks in the secondround, thirty eight, forty nine,
and sixty five. Thirty eight isthe sixth pick, forty eight's kind of
in the middle, and sixty fiveis the last pick. And then the
third round they have three picks aswell, the sixth pick of the third
(01:33:51):
round, which is seventy first, and then towards the end the eighty ninth
pick, and then ninety sixth pick, which is the second to last pick
of the third round. In thefourth round, they have the first pick
at ninety eight, the sixth pickat one oh three, and then they've
got one pick each in the fifthand seventh round, and two more in
the sixth round. So loaded withdraft picks. As you said, I
(01:34:14):
will be down there in sin Cityat the sphere where the draft's taking place
with live coverage brought to you byBeer Bar and Silverton Casino Lodge. Really
excited for it will be fun,It will be exciting. They're already signing
players too. They signed a bunchof players over the last couple of days
to new contracts. So James willbe on that for us. Speaking at
a beer bar, I'll be theretomorrow my last remote tomorrow at Beer Bar
(01:34:35):
from eleven until two. So ifyou've got no lunch plans tomorrow, swinging
by the beer bar and say hi, I'll be out there from eleven until
two. Maybe they'll have some riledup red on tap. Richard and Duncan
have been so good over the years. Just come by and have a little
lunch. Tomorrow, we'll do ahave a little soccer going and have a
little Bill Riley show at beer bar, and then the final show coming up
(01:34:58):
on Friday. All right. Bythe way, you know that I'm a
big fan of underdog Fantasy. Ilove playing fantasy sports and trying to win
a little money with it. Well, right now, over a million fans
are making money on picks with underdogFantasy in Major League Baseball season. Now,
I've been doing this for a while. I've been mixing my basketball with
my baseball for a bit. ButI had a nice win the other night.
(01:35:21):
Wasn't a major win, but itwas a pretty nice win. I
picked the three baseball players, wenthigher on their stats with two of the
three, and then went lower onanother. And it was a good night
for Bill Riley. The can'ts HityRoyals were involved in that, so I
will say I was very happy withthat, Thank you Bobby Witt and Salvador
Perez. But it's really easy. With baseball. You could pick up to
(01:35:43):
as many as eight players between twoand eight go higher or lower on their
stats, and if you knock themall out of the park, you can
win up to three hundred and twentyfive times your money. I've not been
lucky enough to do that yet.I've won like five times, or seven
times or eight times. But it'sreally easy. It's really fun. And
when you set up use my promocode. Where you're either at Underdog Fantasy

a baseball fan. There's hundreds andhundreds and hundreds of stats you can go
higher or lower on every single night. I usually sprinkled in a little WNBA.
I was doing some NHL too,but now the NHL's done as well.
Anyway, it's a lot of fun. It's Underdog Fantasy and Underdog Fantasy
(01:36:48):
dot Com. All right, twohours down and one to go on this
Wednesday edition of The Bill Riley Show. Sadly, for many of you,
not a hotter dot edition. Manyof you asked me to do a Hot
or Not twoesday Wednesday. I couldnot do that, although I did just
get a text from my gun frommy guy Shep. And Shep and Spence
and I were the creators of Hotor Not Wednesday all those many years ago,
(01:37:12):
and it began with just a simplediscussion of camera Diaz. So Shep,
thank you, he said, Kudoson the new gig. Kudos to
you as well, Shep and allof you listening in final hour ahead here
of the Bill Riley Show on utahsnumber one Sports Talk ESPN seven hundred,
you were tuned into Utah's best midday sports show, The Bill Riley Show,
(01:37:36):
presented by the Leschwab Tires, righthere on your home of the units
ESPN seven hundred, well, werenow about four and a half hours away
from the NBA Draft beginning. We'llhave coverage tonight with myself, Spence check
Its, and Gordy Chieza right here. Jazz picking at ten and twenty nine
(01:37:57):
today, thirty two, possibly tomorrow. I don't think they'll keep all three
of those picks. Heck, Idon't know if they'll keep two of those
three picks, but we'll see.I didn't think they keep all three last
year, and they did, butI just don't think you want that many
young players on your roster. Butagain, if they decide to go full
tank mode, maybe they do.We'll see. Andy Bailey covers the NBA
for the Benicha Report. He's beenalways kind enough take a few minutes out
(01:38:18):
of his day of practicing law anddefending those who need defending in the great
state of Wyoming to talk a littlebasketball here at the Bill Riley Show.
So I won't be bothering him anyfurther doing that, but I'm glad he's
got a few minutes today to talksome draft with us. How are you
any I am good and I'm alwayshappy to be on your show. Thanks
for having me. It's good tohave you back again. So let's just
(01:38:41):
start with the Jazz. Since we'rehere. Do you believe they'll have it?
They'll they'll make all three picks inthis draft today and tomorrow or even
two tonight. I'm with you.Give him the amount of young talent that's
already on the roster. I wouldthink that alone probably inspires them or whether
they's them to make some deals.I also think there's the quote from Danny
(01:39:04):
Ainge from a couple of months agoabout how they might be ready to go
big game hunting this summer. Thatcould be motivating some of their thinking in
the next couple of days. Soit's nice to have an excess of picks,
and that's you know, that alwayslooks good when they trade is first
reported, as it did when theymoved Gobert and Mitchell a couple of years
ago. But eventually you just haveto There's a cap on how many guys
(01:39:26):
you can have on your roster,so they're going to have to start moving
some of these at some point. And twenty four seems like a draft to
potentially move out of, like, not out of entirely, but it does
I think make sense to consolidate thisyear. I think so too. The
Big Game hunting line sounded really good. I'm just not sure that's going to
be possible this summer. If theBig Game hunting for a guy like Mikhale
(01:39:49):
Bridges, who I like it offa lot, is what the Hall was.
I'm not sure the Jazz are willingto give that up, but they
could. They're one of the fewteams, much like the Knicks, that
had those picks to do it.I'm not sure they would do it,
but at some point in time, you've got to stop accumulating picks like the
Jass have and start turning those picksinto either players or assets, because you're
(01:40:10):
not gonna want all those picks overthe course of the next six years.
I think that's absolutely true. AndI also, you know, it's one
thing to say you're going to goout and get win now players. It's
obviously another thing to do it.And I'm not I'm not necessarily doubting how
genuine Danny and Danny Andrews being whenhe said that, But not only is
(01:40:30):
it not possible or potentially not possible, like you said, to do that
this summer, it might it justmight not be smart. I think Utah
has been relatively patient for the lastcouple of years, and to hit the
gas now might be a little shortsightedgiven the relative weakness of this draft,
(01:40:51):
relative weakness of this free agent class, and maybe this trade market Compared to
twenty five, I think I thinkif they're going to push some chips in
twenty five would be a better yearto do it. I think there's going
to be better draft prospects available. You never know who'll be available for trade
between now and then, So ifJazz spends are up for it and have
(01:41:13):
the patience for it, I thinkthey need to wait at least one more
year. Well if that's the okay, And again I guess you can never
know what the tea leaves are goingto show you. But is there a
thought process that you know, maybetwo years ago after they dealt Rudy in
Donovan that they should have gone tankand they should have gone and just tried
to get as good you know,do what the Rockets have done, do
(01:41:34):
what the Oklahoma City thunder have doneto try to rebuild it that way?
Or do you like what the Jazzhave done. I like what they've done,
and I think the intention probably wasto tank, at least to some
degree. I don't think even theUtah front office could have expected Marketing to
be as good as he has been. And as long as you have like
(01:41:54):
a fringe All NBA forward on yourroster, it's going to be hard to
just be really, really bad,and that'll continue to be the case obviously
if he's on the roster next season. I guess where you could maybe second
guess them if you're if you're amongthe fans or analysts who think they should
have leaned harder into the tank ismaybe they should have traded Mike Conley earlier
(01:42:15):
last season that well, season beforelast, and maybe should they should have
traded Kelly Olinnick a little bit earlierthis past season, and maybe that helps
them start tacked stacking up losses alittle bit earlier in the season than they
did, and they could run intoa similar issue again this year. I
mean, I just mentioned if you'regoing to be angling for a draft class,
twenty five is maybe the one todo it. Utah's in a tricky
(01:42:40):
position because they just might not beable to have an aggressive, we want
to lose type season if Marketing's onthe roster, and at the same time,
I'm not necessarily advocating for movings marketing. It's it's kind of a political
neutral stance that I'm taking with thejazz right now. I just if there's
one thing I'm fairly competent about,it's that this summer probably isn't the one
(01:43:01):
to go all in with win nowmoves. Talking Andy Bailey here at the
Bill Riley Show today on ESPN seven. It's a little bit of breaking news
the heater extending bam Adebayo. Youwant to take a guess on the total
value of the contract. I thinkI already saw this, Okay, so
I would be cheating, but Ithink it's what around one sixty or something
(01:43:23):
like that on six he won sixtysix for three more years, and the
numbers are going to continue to beeye popping for me. I mean,
I understand that the cap is goingup and bam at a Bayo's another fringe
all NBA guy. But yeah, the contracts that we see nowadays are pretty
wild. If you can, ifyou can look at it from the perspective
(01:43:45):
of what percentage of the cap isthat going to be, I think that's
a pretty good deal. For theMiami Heat. I think he's a very
versatile big man who can do alittle bit of point center type stuff.
It'd be nice if he had alittle bit more range as a shooter.
But he he's a great player, and that's just kind of what you have
to do with great players these daysin the NBA. You got to sign
(01:44:05):
them to the maxi money every timeyou can. So if the Jazz stay
at ten tonight, Andy, theyneed everything. I'm not convinced Keanty George
is the point guard for the longterm, at least not the starting point
guard for the long term. Theyneed to get better defensively. They were
awful awful defensively. They could usea wing defender. There's a lot of
things they could use. And JustinZanik said, where the position to take
(01:44:27):
the best player possible. Give mea couple of names that you think might
be around to ten that would begood for the Jazz. Well, I
agree with you on everything he justsaid. I'm not necessarily I am not
out on Keyante George by any stretchof the imagination. But I'm also not
necessarily sold that he's like a longterm playmaker, traditional point guard type.
(01:44:48):
So one name that I've seen slippinga decent amount, and it's probably because
of the knee injury that he sufferedtowards the end of his season overseas as
Nicola topic I think would be veryinteresting if he slid all the way to
ten. He's got a great feelfor the game. Serbia is kind of
invading the NBA right now, andthere's a style of play, a team
(01:45:09):
for style to play with those guysthat I think he's super intriguing. Ron
Holland is a guy who was firston a lot of people's big boards I
don't know, six seven months ago, and then maybe was a little underwhelming
with the G League ignite this yearand it's lit a little bit, but
I've seen him slip to around Utah'srange in some mock drafts. Cody Williams,
(01:45:31):
And just to go back to RonHolland, a wing who can I
think conceivably have some point forward potentially. He's a great athlete and I think
he has a potential to be apretty solid preimater defender too. And then
one other wing to think about that'sI think going to be around that range
is Cody Williams, who may nothave the same defensive upside as Ron Holland,
(01:45:53):
but his brother Jalen has certainly developedinto a pretty good defender in the
NBA, and I think Cody profilesto be pretty good shooter. So there
will be options. I don't,you know, I don't know how many
surefire superstars or in this draft, but I think it's going to be a
relatively deep class in terms of guyswho can become role players, and I
(01:46:15):
think there's going to be a fewof them around ten for Utah. I
agree, and I think that's probablythe best spot for them to be.
Twenty nine. We'll see what happens. Thirty two, we'll see what happens.
What's your feeling on Brownnie James.Does he get taken tomorrow night by
or tomorrow afternoon by the Lakers?Yeah? I think that's its floor,
and the reasons for it are obvious, and I think it's fair for people
(01:46:39):
to be cynical about it. Imean, his college numbers were not good,
but I also understand why LA woulddo it. I mean, Lebron
is he's a very Obviously he's probablystill the most marketable guy in the league.
The Lakers have kind of a traditionof treating their aging stars well near
(01:47:00):
the end is the obviously did withKobe Bryant as well. And if you
if you just remove like the uh, the you know, v the hardcore
NBA analyst numbers guy equation from it, it is pretty cool for a father
to be able to play with hisson in the NBA. I mean that,
the sentimental side of it is isreally a cool thing. And it's
(01:47:21):
just one roster spot, and youknow, those are valuable for teams that
want to contend. But at thesame time, I don't necessarily think like
he's guaranteed to be a bust.He had a pretty solid combine. He
showed you know, fairly well inthe scrimmages, and he put up better
athletics and athletic numbers and measurements thanI expected from him. So there's at
(01:47:43):
least some defensive potential there. AndI've I've been touting the pedigree for Cody
Williams because you know, I dothink there's something to his brother already being
good in the NBA. And ifI'm gonna, you know, say that
with Williams, I certainly have toextend that to a father son relationship.
And Lebron is a top five playerof all time, so it wouldn't be
(01:48:06):
crazy for his son to develop intoan NBA level player. Is there a
guy you've watched or scatted this year'sdraft anywhere in the draft that'll be a
first round guy that you really like? I mean that you're like, Okay,
this guy, I got no doubthe's going to be a great player.
Well, I don't know if there'sany no doubters this year. And
(01:48:28):
the interesting thing about a draft likethis where there's a lot of unpredictability and
there isn't you know, there isn'tone guy that everybody's saying now, he's
definitely going to be good. Isyou can kind of fall for a lot
of different guys in a draft likethis, but one that I keep coming
back to, And maybe it's alittle dangerous because of his age. He's
already twenty three years old. ButI've liked Tristan de Silva for a long
(01:48:50):
time from Colorado. His teammate, the younger guy, Cody Williams, has
gotten more of the attention, butI just to silva size almost six'
ten and his feel when I watchhim play, he moves very much like
a wing or a guard, whichis I think great for a six ten
guy. Not huge assist numbers incollege, but I do think he has
(01:49:12):
some point forward potential and in someways he kind of reminds me of Hoimai
Hawkes from last year's draft, wherethe knock on him is that he's older.
You know, he should be dominatingyounger guys at that point in his
life, but he just has afeel for the game. He's he's one
of those guys I watch him thinkhe knows how to play basketball. So
that's that's one that my eyes keepbeing drawn to. Is Tristan Disilba from
(01:49:35):
Colorado. Moment or two more herewith Andy Bailey. How's Paul George and
his potential status going to impact theWestern or Eastern Conference? That that seems
like the biggest domino just sort ofchilling out there right now. And he's
getting older. I was, youknow, looking at a bunch of people
(01:49:57):
who are potentially available if there's freeagents or trade targets this summer, and
I was surprised that he's he's alreadythirty four years old. He's as old
as Klay Thompson, So there maynot be a long runway left for him
to be an impact guy, buthe certainly is one now. He's a
much higher volume three point shooter thanI think people realize. And if he
winds up on a team where he'slike the third option, which would be
(01:50:20):
the case in Philadelphia with MB andMaxie, if he's a third option anywhere,
that's a title contender. So Ithink he's obviously a huge potential swing
wherever he winds up. He's youknow, he's not the defender he was
(01:50:40):
five ten years ago, but he'sstill pretty solid and switchable on that end.
He can be a secondary creator. He's a very malleable player. I
mean, there's a lot of superstarswho when they go to a different situation,
you kind of have to reorganize yourteam and you're philosophy to fit that
guy. But I think Paul Georgejust fits anywhere. So he's wherever he
winds up, even if it's backin the Clippers, that's that's gonna be
(01:51:01):
big news, I think. So. I think you wrote something today about
should the Nuggets take a look athim? You think they will? Well,
I think every team, you know, given the way this is played
out with the Clippers. I thinkevery team has to at least call and
say, hey, what's the dealhere. It's really tricky with the Nuggets
because you know, if Contavious calledLoo Pope picks up his option, they're
(01:51:25):
over the second apron and they're they'reout. I mean, they can't aggregate
salaries to get to Paul George's number. But even if KCP declines and both
of those teams are first apron teams, it's still really tricky to make the
trade. So it would take alot of cap gymnastics to make that work.
But if it meant giving up MichaelPorter Junior in whatever draft capital they
(01:51:46):
have, I mean, it certainlymakes Denver better in the short term.
And like I just said, Georgeis really adaptable wherever he goes, and
if if he were suddenly with aplaymaking five like Jokic, I think he'd
be extremely dangerous. So that wouldbe huge for them. I just I
think there might be too many cattitles for that one to happen. Who
goes first tonight? Is it Saris it the French Kid? Is it
(01:52:09):
Shepherd? Who do you think endsup going first? Another thing about this
draft, it's just so unpredictable.I mean, everybody's saying recesschet, and
so I guess by default I willdo that as well. And I can
see the intrigue a six' tenshooter who moves pretty fluid out there.
But I keep thinking back to twentythirteen, which was another draft that a
(01:52:30):
lot of people were kind of pessimisticabout, and Anthony Bennett's name comes out
of nowhere for the first overall pickthat year. So I will I will
say resschet just because it's it seemslike it's kind of out in the ether
right now, but don't be surprisedif we get something off the wall that
kind of sends the draft into minorshock waves tonight. Read his stuff at
(01:52:56):
the Bleacher Report. Andy, thanksas always. We'll meet somewhere down the
road to preciate it, appreciate it. Thanks for having me, sir.
There you go, Andy Bailey withus here on the Bill Riley Show today.
Read his stuff for the Bleacher Report. I always like Andy because he's
thought out and measured. He's anattorney, so you know he's going to
be a smart guy. But histakes are thought out and measured. They're
not hot takes. They're usually factbased, which is always good, but
(01:53:18):
also stat and information based as well. So appreciate Andy Bailey taking a few
minutes with us here at the BillRiley Show today, keeping an eye on
the Euro's Portugal late first half fortyfifth minutes, still trailing Georgia by a
score of one to nothing. Keeptabs on that when his diegoes along today,
