and we'll we'll say thank you foryour listenership and all that good stuff
over the years. This will bemy last remote as of now for ESPN
seven hundred. My final day istomorrow, if you could believe it.
I've had people asking me for acouple of weeks. Now, are you
ready for your last show? Whatare you gonna say on your last show?
(01:07):
Are you ready? I have noidea. I've started actually thinking about
it now and let me just sayI could be an unobated mess tomorrow trying
to say goodbye and thank you onmy last show. So anything is on
the table tomorrow from eleven until twoon these very airwaves is I'm going to
(01:27):
try my very best to keep ittogether and have a good time and say
thank you to some folks and havea good show on the final show tomorrow.
But today is today, and we'relive at beer Bar at one sixty
one East and second South here indowntown Salt Lake City. Our opening segment
is always brought to you by ourfriends at Alvrmani. At Alvrmani, you
(01:49):
know it. They could change yourhairline, they could change your confidence level,
they could change your life. Goto Alvrmani dot com and schedule your
consultation today. So day one,Round one of the NBA Draft is over
and done. We had great cover. He had a blast last night.
Had the band back together for onemore time, Me and Spence and Gordy.
(02:09):
Gordy's gonna join us here in aboutten minutes or so, and we'll
kind of recap round one and lookahead the drive round two. The Jazz
have one pick today. They're atnumber thirty two, which is the the
third pick of the second round, which begins at about two o'clock this afternoon,
So we'll keep tabs on that duringSpence's show today. But they grabbed
last night probably the two best freshmenin the PAC twelve a year ago.
(02:30):
They grabbed Cody Williams, a kidfrom Colorado. His brother Jalen plays for
Oklahoma State, and then they grabbedIsaiah Callier at number twenty nine last night.
If they keep their pick, they'llpick at number thirty two today,
which will be about twenty minutes intothe second round of the draft this afternoon,
and Spence will keep you updated onthat. I like the Cody Williams
(02:51):
pick. I do. He wasn'tmy favorite player on the draft, but
I can see his upside. Ican see his potential. He had a
rough first year at Colorado. Hejust didn't do it whole lot because he
was well. He was injured. He missed seven or eight games nine games
for Colorado this year. He wasan effective player, but his better his
better basketball is still in front ofhim. He goes six foot seven,
six foot eight, He's got ahuge wingspan. He shoots it well,
(03:15):
he passes it excellently. He's nota bad defender either. He'll be a
wing guy for the Utah Jazz.He will you know, you'll likely see
him play the three. He couldplay occasionally the two. When Lowry Markin
is at the four, he'll playthe three. He's a good player,
got tremendous upside. I like thepick. The second pick the Jazz made
yesterday was Isaiah Collier, the guythat was the former number one recruit in
(03:38):
the country. He had a soso freshman year this past year at USC.
I'll be honest, I called himtwo games that he played in.
I didn't like his game at all. It seemed to be a very selfish
game. It seemed to be avery me game. But then again,
he was playing on a dysfunctional basketballteam, and the Nfields team last year
(04:00):
was not well constructed. They hadBronnie James on that team who they could
never figure out how to get inand on the court. Once he got
cleared that he also shared the backcourtwith Boogie Ellis, who is equally as
selfish a basketball player. I don'tknow. Maybe there's something in Isaiah Collier
we didn't see in the year numberone. I just didn't like the way
he played the game. He seemedto be I'm gonna get mine kind of
(04:24):
a guy. Now, does hehave offensive skill? He does. He's
a solid shooter. He is excellentat getting to the basket and excellent at
getting to the foul line. Heonly shot sixty seven percent of the foul
line last year, but he gotthere more than just about anybody in the
Pac twelve Conference. So I'm alittle lukewarm on both picks. I like
(04:47):
Cody Williams for the Jazz. I'mnot sure where Isaiah Callier fits in with
the Utah Jazz. And if theymake a draft pick today, and we'll
talk to Gordy about this just alittle bit, Antoni Jones to join us
later too. They if they draftthree kids today on top of the three
kids they drafted last year, maybe, just abe, that might be giving
(05:13):
us a signal as to the directionthat Utah might be going with the direction
of their their franchise. You havesix kids on your roster, that are
under twenty two years old. Whatyou're looking at is maybe a rebuild again,
don't know that for sure, buta team that's battling to contend and
be in it and be around itdoesn't have basically six first and second year
(05:39):
players on their roster. That's allI'm saying. Talk to Gordy about it
today, but if they take somebodyat thirty two today, I would be
very dubious if I were a jazzfan of the direction of where this program
is going. So I don't knowwhat you liked or what you didn't like
about the draft last night, Feelfree to hit me up on the on
the text line at eight seven seventhree five three zero seven hundred. That's
(05:59):
eight seven seven three five three zeroseven hundred. Any thoughts on the draft
last night are certainly welcome, orany thoughts at all. We are,
by the way, sixty three daysand eight hours away from kickoff. Yeah,
sixty three days exactly nine weeks fromtoday, Utah kicks off the college
football season at riysecl Stadium against theagainst Southern Utah t Birds. We'll have
(06:21):
it for you right here on ESPNseven hundred. Looking forward to that.
It should be a good time andthe season should be amazing. I'm looking
forward to being part of this radiostation moving forward. Just not on a
day in and day out basis likeI have been before, but you're gonna
hear me on game days. You'regonna hear me throughout the week, joining
Spence and the guy that gets myseat here from eleven until two o'clock.
(06:45):
I'll be part of it, andcertainly be part of it. Sixty three
days from today, when Utah opensup against the Southern Utah t Birds,
we'll talk to college football at theprogram Today. Eric Weddle, my good
friend for the final time on thisshow, will join us, coming up
here and just a few minutes theBill Riley Show today and we'll talk to
E Dub about the season and we'llreminisce just a little bit. Chris Wingert's
also going to join the show today. We'll talk a little copa America with
(07:10):
Chris Wingert, now an agent, former RSL defender, one of my favorite
guys over the years with RSL.And then Spence is gonna swing by today
and we're gonna do a little reminiscingfor a segment. We're gonna rock the
walk down Memory Lane, because whileI've been here for twenty straight years,
Spence has been here. This ishis second sessh here at ESPN seven hundred,
(07:32):
and the first iteration was Bill andSpence. And we had a lot
of fun down through the years. We really did. So we're gonna reminisce
a little bit about some of thatstuff today here on the program. A
seven seven three five three zero sevenhundred gets you in and on board today
here on the Bill Riley Show onUtah's number one sports talk ESPN seven hundred.
Also one other note, we'll goover this in a little while,
(07:56):
but the Big Twelve has issued theirhome, home and away designations for men's
and women's basketball this year, sothey have a home only games and away
only games and home and home games. You've got three sets. For the
home only games this year, Utahwill welcome Arizona State and Colorado and Kansas
(08:18):
and Kansas State and Texas Tech.So Utah will not get to go to
fabled Allen Fieldhouse this year, butKansas will come to Salt Lake City.
The away only games for Utah thisyear include Arizona, Houston, Iowa State,
TCU, and UCF Arizona, Houston, Iowa State. Those are three
(08:39):
difficult places to play, and thenthe home and home games they've got this
year will include BYU Baylor, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia.
Twenty teams schedule, they will playfive teams twice and then they'll have just
home games and just rode games aswell. So you can find all that
(09:03):
stuff up at utah Utes dot com. But that was announced as of this
morning, so that's where that thingstands, and we'll talk a little bit
more about that as we go heretoday on the program. The women's side
of it was announced too, andwe'll go over that coming up also.
And by the way, I didn'tsay this the other day, but let
me say it today. Congratulations tomy good friend Lynn Roberts. I saw
(09:24):
her last week when I was broadcastingfrom up at the Huntsman Center, and
then two days later Lynn got anice contract extension. It will take her
through twenty thirty. I could notbe happier. She is one of the
best people that I've had a chanceto deal with in my time as Voice
of the Utes, and for herto get that kind of extension shows the
kind of confidence they have and theprogram she's built up at Utah. So
(09:48):
I could not be happier for her, and I'm looking forward to working with
her in her program on a closerand more regular basis here as I transitioned
into that new job as director broadcasting. All right, let me a few
text messages before we get Gordy onhere here on the Bill Riley Show today
on Utah's number one sports dock.Text message, Hey Bill, Did the
Jaz's get a better player in Collierthan Williams at ten? Even though Southern
(10:11):
California made Collier look not so good? No, I don't believe. So.
I think that Cody Williams is thebetter of the two players, and
I think he's got more upside.I think he's more versatile. Again,
I saw them both play in person. I'm not saying Isaiah Collier could be
a good player, but if you'reasking me to project between the two,
I think Williams is the better ofthe two players, the guy they got
at number ten. Text message,Hey Bill. Even still, I don't
(10:35):
love Collier. Maybe it's because hewent to USC. That's fine, he
doesn't go to USC anymore, ButI don't like Collier's game. I don't
know him personally. I've got nothingagainst the kid. I've never met him,
but I didn't like his game whenI saw him play in person a
couple of times last year. Textmessage Bill, I'm sorry, I've been
out of town for a few weeks, so you're leaving ESPN seven hundred.
(10:58):
Sorry to hear this. You've beenmy go to listening since moving to Utah.
Thanks for a great show and honestopinions. Were you off to You've
probably already answered this question. Thanksonce again, and thanks and good luck
for your new adventures. Yes,for those of you that might just be
tuning in get back from vacation.I am going to be the director of
Broadcasting at the University of Utah.I am going to be part of a
(11:20):
team that helps to create a brandnew basically ESPN channel at Utah on a
digital platform for part of the newBig twelve on the ESPN Plus platform.
Plus I'll be doing a ton ofother stuff too. But that's gonna be
my big lift at least early oncreating this new digital platform for all of
Utah athletics, and then I'll bedoing a bunch of other stuff too.
(11:43):
But thank you and I appreciate that, I really really do. We're gonna
have a good time today and tomorrow. Text message. The only thing I
liked about the Draft last night wasSpence and Gordy and yourself. The three
of you are so good together.Really enjoyed the Draft show. Signed Derek
the Mailman, Derek the Mailman,my guy, thank you for listening in
last night. Appreciate I heard froma bunch of people last night. One
of my old Spence intern, SpenceSmith, was listening in last night,
(12:07):
probably from the car dealership down inUtah County. We have so much fun
doing this and we talked about it. If they'll have me back next year
and I have a night off fromthe new job, I will be happy
to come back and do the NBAshow that we've been doing together for a
long time. But it was ablast being with Gordy and Spence last night
doing that show. Text message,j Bill, I'd love to see the
Jazz take Philipowski at number thirty two. There's a chance of it. I
(12:31):
mean, he'll he's there. JohnnyFurfee's there too from Kansas. Yeah.
I mean if they stay at thirtytwo, they're going young. Philipowski's a
good player. I don't know wherehe translates as a pro. He was
a good college player, not wildlyathletic, but pretty skilled, I think,
(12:52):
And it's not because he went toKansas. I think I like Furfe's
upside better than Philipowski's. But we'llsee what happens. Eight seven seven three
five three zero seven hundred. Hey, Bill, I feel like the Jazz
are just hoping they're going to geta big hit in the draft like Mitchell,
even though we're always waiting for themto make a big move on a
trade er a free agent. They'renotorious for never doing that. Well,
(13:13):
you never know. You just neverknow. When they drafted Donovan Mitchell a
few years ago, you didn't knowhow good he was going to be when
they took him at thirteen. Wedon't know just how good Cody Williams is
going to be at ten or IsaiahKyier will be at twenty nine. Well,
we might have an idea. GordyChiazen was with us last night on
our draft coverage. Back with ushere today on the Bill Riley Show.
(13:33):
Gord, how are you, Bill? I'm doing fine. So now you've
had a little bit of time tolet it sink in. Cody Williams at
number ten, Isaiah Collier at numbertwenty nine. Has your thought process changed
at all on those two picks? No. I mean with Cody Williams the
Jesse getting a lengthy Alcoma wing andthat he shot he's shoving pre print range
(13:56):
college range forty one point five andhe shot in the fifty five point two,
which tells us that he takes measuredshots and that he knows how to
play, and that he's talented. He's got some poise, and again he's
a shot creator and finisher, andhe has confident ball skills. And so
I used the comparison to say, quickly, he minds me of a young
Chris Middleton, a young DeMar deRosen and Alec Burks, formerly of the
(14:20):
Jazz now of the of the Knicks. I'm with you, I said last
night. I liked the pick.He didn't wow me as a freshman,
but he was hurt part of theyear. He's got upside, he's got
skills. The second pick, though, Gordy, is the one I scratched
my head at just a little bit. I really didn't like Isaiah Collier and
I saw some good things out ofhim, but I didn't like the way
(14:43):
he played. Now, some ofthat could have been the dysfunction of playing
at a bad USC team last yearand maybe not getting coached well enough.
But now that you've had a littletime, a little twelve hours, fourteen
hours to think of Isaiah Collier, what are your thoughts there? Well,
the Jents win the best player available, and so he's a lightning rod as
far as electric in transition, he'sa hard guy to stay in front.
(15:05):
So he's a one on one shotcreator, and so in Jazz basketball when
he does play, and again he'san i'll call him a combo guard.
He's six' five. He's notreally a true guard, but he's like
i'll call him a two slash possiblyone, but not traditional as far as
one because he scores the ball.I like about him. He creates his
own shot, and that's what theJazz need also to helped some the other
(15:28):
the big guys as far as givethem shot attempts. What he is though,
he's always in the lane, soBill most of his points have been
in the lane. As far ashim getting fouled, and that's the NBA
trade. So just think about it. And the NBA is very hard to
ball contained and this guy, that'sone of his strengths as far as what
getting his shoulder by the initial defense. Yeah, sometimes he's out of control.
(15:50):
I agree, sometimes he takes erraticshots. But they went for the
best town available and at twenty nineit's small picked by the jazz but there's
still so much unknown about him.Do you view him as a point guard
or more of a combo slash scoringguard. Combo slash scoring guard, and
(16:11):
that's the strengths that he's a downhilldriver. Yeah, he's torn over prone,
yes he is, and so they'vegot to clean that up. But
again he is talented and so withChante George So, which means Bill,
part of the segue right now wouldbe what about Colin Sexton, what about
Jordan Clarkson? See and also weleft out Bryce Senseiba, who was picked
(16:33):
last year at twenty eight, Andso I'm assuming some of those guys will
be gone and as the new waveof jazz players will get a chance to
play, if not at the beginning, definitely by the first month or so.
Our friend Gordy Chias with us hereon the Bill Riley shows were broadcast
live from beer Bar. Today, you're in downtown Salt Lake. I didn't
know if they keep twenty nine, much less thirty two today. We haven't
(16:55):
heard anything. They took three lastyear. What would you what? What
would your inkling be if the Jazztake another player today, they keep the
thirty second pick and take Cam threelast year rookies, three this year rookies.
Would that signify maybe a direction theymay be leaning in Gordy, Yeah,
direction as far as they'm totally rebuildingand go with the young guys.
(17:18):
So they're gonna mostly build through thedraft. So at thirty two, which
is thirty two, here's three guysthat will be there. So Jess decide
that one would be Johnny Furfey fromKansas who's a knockdown shooter. Kyle Philapowski,
who is a seventh footer who's gotskill, from Duke who's a stretch
(17:40):
I'll call them a stretch five,he'll be there. And also Cameron Christi,
a two god knockdown shooter from Minnesota. He'll be there. And so
all three of those guys will addcould add value to Jazz bench. And
so at thirty two, I thinkI'm Manysting's telling me they're leaning to taken
of some of these guys. Yeah, I would guess so too. Of
(18:03):
that group of Furfey Philipowski and say, Cam Christy, is there one guy
you like best of those three?Philipowski only because he's a big guy that's
skilled and so Walker Kessler is ashop blocker and rebounder who struggled last year.
So just safe in the narrative. If Philipowski was drafted at thirty two
contractually, it's not a lot ofmoney compared to the NBA thing where they
(18:26):
would give him probably Bill first yearI guaranteed and year's number two and three
team options. And what it doesis Walker Kesler gives him a different look
on the floor of a big guythat's skilled and can shoot from outside.
Versu's trying to keep developing Walker Kesslerto make them be an outside shooter,
which he's not so far. Canhe improve, Yes, but Philipowski is
(18:49):
and Philipowski knows how to play thegame of basketball, So I would lean
towards him only because the backup rightnow is owre your and Kenny Lofton.
So those are the backup quote bigsand in John Collins. We know he's
soling the roster. He could bea trade as far as target. So
(19:10):
really in Jazz basketball right now it'sthe great and known. We'll no more
go in the next three weeks. What direction to Jests are going? Gordy,
does the fact that they didn't drafta point guard last night and probably
aren't gonna look at one today.Tyler Kolek, the kid from Marquette is
sitting there available too, does ittell you maybe they're going to target a
veteran point guard, Because again,as we talked about last night, Daddy
(19:33):
Aimes has been a little waffy onwhether Caante George's long term point guard.
You don't think he is. Idon't think he is. So does that
tell you maybe they try to targeta veteran point guard this offseason and free
agency very much? Yeah, sothey target They're trying to try and get
Like many teams. De Chante murraythat the Hawks could have a fire sell
in the next fifteen days or so. They could. So, if I'm
(19:53):
the Jazz have cap space for him, just have roughly thirty eight one million
dollars in cap space, and alsothey could trade assets. Maning players to
make the deal work. And alot of times when people say they're cap
as far as stopped that they haveto make, they have to make different
maneuvers. They can do it.So the question is you know, who
do you want to trade for?And de Chante Murray would be a classic
(20:15):
guy who the Jazz need. Let'snot forget Larry Markin and also the Jazz
uh will guarantee his contract on Junetwenty eighth. They could still trade them.
But Todation now he's gonna his concressguarantee for the Jazz at eighteen point
one million. But also is thatthe Jazz could extend them. Also,
we'll see what he does as faras you take the extension or did the
(20:38):
Jazz try to sign him and thentry to trade him again the next two
weeks or so? So do youthink Bronnie James gets drafted today? Yes?
Yeah, late in the fifty somethingyeah bye by the Lake, by
the Lakers or by somebody else.I would say Lakers. I want to
(21:03):
go with the home team. Okay, yeah at fifty five. So is
the other guys better than them? The answer is yes, all right,
so we'll see again. Also ifyou're not drafted today in the second round.
Doesn't mean he can't play, becausewe can recite so many guys that
we know personally that were never drafted. But yike, did they play well.
They plowed a chip on their shoulder, and they really do the world
(21:26):
differently as far as they're passionate abouttheir craft and they improve. And Freddy
van Fleet's a class example. Hewent undrafted back in twenty sixteen. His
teammate got drafted Ron Baker in hissecond round by the Knicks. Freddy van
Fleet doesn't get drafted by the WichitaState Shockers. Let's let's fast forwarding.
By the way, last year madeforty million dollars for the Houston Rockets.
(21:49):
This will be the third summer nowthat view is two summers ago. This
will be the third that they madethe big deals to get rid of Gobert
and Mitchell. We thought it wasgoing to signify a complete teardown. It
did not. They they remain competitivefor a year and then they kind of
did it this year. Not reallythe way if you're going to try to
(22:10):
get competitive and get draft picks. But you tell me, Gordy, do
you do you get the sense areyou leaning towards the fact that it might
be a teardown this summer. Yes, yeah, it seems to me the
whare it is right now, SoChisco, you're alluding to Jasmin thirty seven
games. Last year is thirty onegames, and if they keep drafting the
(22:30):
young guys and playing the young guys, that these young guys have talent,
but they're not ready for prime timebecause you show me a young team,
and I'll show your team that's notmaking the playoffs, maybe even maybe the
playing tournament. So these are allthings that are indicators whether the JS as
far as the franchise might be.Now, the players might not cooperate.
The players are going to say thisand directly wait a second, I'm playing,
(22:52):
so I don't care about what's happeningin the future. I'm gonna play
so often the players don't cooperate, and that would be Larry Markinen and I'll
be a count section, both guysthat really are good players in their role,
that they're there as to do andthey're both highly effective. Gorg I
am going to miss our regular conversationson the radio. I know that our
(23:17):
conversations are going to extend to beingin person having lunches talking on the phone.
But I just want to say thankyou so very much for one,
you know, taking me under yourwing all those many years ago and talking
basketball up at the Delta Center afterworkouts, but our friendship down through the
years and coming on this radio show. I've just I've loved every second of
(23:41):
it, and you're one of mygood friends, and I just want to
say thanks for all you've done.Oh likewise, thank you. I've figured
out the other day. We've beentogether on the radio for eleven years,
So eleven years of most times Tuesdayand Thursday for over a decade, and
I enjoyed every second of it.You're the ambassador of goodwill. But with
that built quickly, this is mylast list of you and I together.
(24:03):
It's a quick list, so I'mgonna get through it really quickly. This
is this past season, the twentythree to twenty four All Rookie selection team.
So visualized last night, guys beingpicked in the draft, and let's
see one year later what happened tothem. Here we go. Second team
All Rookie of this past season.G Jackson of the Grizzlies, the forty
(24:26):
fifth pick of the draft, andthe Grizzlies won twenty seven games. Cason
Wallace of the Thunder, the tenthpicket of the draft. The Thunder one
fifty seven games. Keante George ofthe Jazz last year was the sixteenth picket
of the draft. The Jazz wonthirty one games. Alman Thompson from the
Rockets the fourth pick of the draft. The Rockets won forty one games.
(24:48):
Derek Lively from the Mavericks the twelfthpick of the draft. Last season,
the mass won fifty games. Herewe go quickly the first team. Brandon
Pagenski from the Warriors, the nineteenthpick the draft. His team won forty
six games. Jim Hakez from theHeat. His team was He was the
eighteenth pick of the draft. TheHeat won forty six games. Brandon Miller,
(25:11):
the second pick of the draft lastyear from the Hornets. His team
won twenty one games. Cheed Holmgrimwho was the second pick two years ago,
got hurt. He set him outin twenty twenty two second pick from
the Thunder. The Thunder won fiftyseven games, and last year the first
pick of the draft, Victor wenByama the Spurs won twenty two games,
(25:37):
and so he hit the learning pointabout it. There's so much high about
these guys. It's so hard towin. So wen Byama is a generational
once in the really lifetime talent.Or by the way, the Spurs won
twenty two games, that's how goodthe NBA other players are. So often
these rookies, you know, theyhad their they had their wonderful moment and
now starts. Really the unbelievable thing. Oh, by the way, will
(26:00):
you be impact impactful as far aswith our franchise. That is my good
friend Gordon Chiaso, who has beenso kind for the last eleven years to
do radio with me every week. We've known each other for twenty three years.
We've had a great relationship. Ilove him to death. I may
(26:22):
be leaving, but Gordy will notbe. Gordy is vowed to continue to
talk a little basketball in these veryairwaves. Whoever gets this slot, we'll
be hosting Gordy on a pretty regularbasis too. But Gordon, thank you
so much again. I love youand I'll talk to you soon. Thanks
Bill, good luck, Bill, all your travels, and more importantly,
(26:42):
