were pretty good. I mean Cardell obviously, Buck Eye legend,
and Michael Jenkson, you know, probably one of the most
underrated wide receivers. And you know, ohose that history, you know,
as big as that holy Buck Eye catch was his
catch on I want to say it was like fourth
and fourteen in the National Championship game against Miami to

keep the drive going, you know what I'm saying. I mean,
in a game when we could not throw the ball.
We could not We could not throw the ball that game.
I think I think crensl is like four for fourteen
for eighty five yards in regulation or something like that,
and seven for twenty one on the whole game. So
we could not throw the ball. And you have a
fourth and fourteen against that defense, and Jenkins just threw

the guy off him, took that out route, caught the ball,
and and the rest is history. So yeah, big time player.
We're getting out at twelve. Now, we're getting down to
the low digits, which means, well, how's that football is

Julian is starting, of course. But Nevada, what's your initial
thoughts now that everything is public, everything is out there
and ready to go? How are you feeling? Man?

Well, I think it's it was the right time, I
think if you asked us, you know, yeah, I always
say your timing these things is dicey. But how how
early would you like to name your starting quarterback? You know,
two weeks is about right. You know you'd want to
have given the fall camp a good chance instead of run.
You know, you obviously have other things to consider in

this because you've got a backup quarterback and Lincoln that
you don't want to leave or feel betrayed or whatever
it was. So you wanted to give him a fair
shot during the spring camp to a couple of scrimmages,
and but you have to at some point name the starter.
Julian was clearly the guy, but Lincoln's gonna play. And

I think that's an important thing for people to understand,
is they're putting in packages and they're not just I
know that the popular thing is, you know, your short yardage,
goal line type of stuff, but that's not just it.
You know, I'm not sure what numbers are going to
call up for him, but they've got a variety of
different situations around the field that they like to do
with with with Lincoln, and he brings kind of a

different element than that Julian does. I mean, Julian is
you know, I say, less athletic, but Lincoln's a freaky athlete.
I mean, Lincoln is a freaky, truly freaky athlete. Where's
Julians just you know, I've heard I saw something today
with this. You know, somebody said he's like the best
thrower ever a state might might be. I mean he

might be the best peer thrower. I mean he's got
that kind of arm talent, He's that kind of peer quarterback.
But Lincoln's gonna play. So it's but you got to
you need you know the old sayings, if you have
two quarterbacks and you don't have one, you know, you
need to have one guy that's the alpha dog. Lincoln's
gonna be the relief pitcher, kind of come in in
case somebody gets hurt and situationally, but he'll see the

field this year in a sixteen seventy eight schedule. Both
those guys are gonna play. But Julian's the man. If
you've been following this podcast and following you know, the website,
you know that's something we've been saying for quite some time.
But you know, it's not like he came out of nowhere.
He's a five star, number one quarterback in the country
coming out of high school, winner of the Elite eleven,

so super highly regarded, but has lived up to every
bit of the hype since he've been in Ohio State.
And I know the coaching staff loves him another receivers level.
I know, the offense truly believes in him, and I
think he's going to be a great leader for Ohio
State and I think he's going to do great things.

Yeah, here's the here's the quote. It was Bo Bishop
who said this.

I am not surprised that Julian is starting quarterback at
Ohio State. He's the most natural thrower of the football
that I've seen that has played here. Tim May echoed
this as much when we talked to him at camp.
It just comes off of his hands so naturally, it
just flicks. Now, will he become what Dwayne Haskins became
or what CJ.

Stroud became? Who knows?

But what he is right now is the most gifted
and I think you're gonna really like watching him play.

All right. So yeah, that's you know, definitely high praise.
When you think of all the great quarterbacks we've had,
especially recently, you know, c J. Stroud and Haskins, and
I mean those guys you talk about natural flick and
the ball coming off the hands. Nothing prettier than c. J.
Stroud or even Haskins. So you know, that was definitely
high praise. Couple things I want to touch on about it,

(08:01):
about saying so number one, the QB battle, I want
I just kind of want to repeat this, and I've
said this before because you still see kind of comments
about how Ryan Day handles the quarterback position. And yes,
like Julian saying was the guy, but that doesn't mean
it wasn't real what he was going through. Ryan Day,
as a QB guy, even if he feels you're the guy,

(08:25):
he wants you to walk it out. He wants you
to go and snatch it and take it and prove
it and lead your teammates and win the locker room.
I'm telling you, Ryan Day is not just being a phony.
Oh I'm just going to put on a ruse. No,
He's a quarterback and he understands what it takes to

(08:46):
lead a team. So he's saying, Okay, yeah, I think
Julian is the guy. I'm pretty sure he is, but
he needs to go and prove it to his teammates,
to us all of that, and so I think there
is a small window crack for that other guy in
these situations to take it. I think I do think
Devin Brown there was a crack, but McCourt was the starter.

(09:11):
But if you slip up, watch your back type thing.
So I don't think it's I'm saying this because Nevada
people get frustrated and think this is just a fake
you know, But he does this all the time, even
though we knew Julian Sam was the starter. It doesn't
mean that Ryan Day was just faking it. He wants
his guys to step in and take it Nevada. What

you got to say about that before I move on?

Speaker 1 (09:35):
Well, no, I think it's a great point. And I think,
you know, I think things can things can go the
way that you expect him to go and the way
that you thought they were going to go without it
being fake. You know. I think Ryan likes to stress
the quarterbacks, you know, he likes to challenge them on
the field, off the field, yeah, you know, to be
that guy. And yeah, I think him just anointing somebody

is definitely not you know, it's not the he does
things not the way that you know, most of the
good coaches wouldn't do it. And I think for Ryan,
he did want to see one of the guys kind
of separate themselves. And I think it's became pretty clear
to the team that Julian had separated himself. You know,
you can debate whether it could have been done a
week earlier or whatever it was, but I think Julian
had created that kind of separation. But it was real,

(10:20):
you know, I mean it was it was palpable. It
was obvious that people watching in terms of what's going on.
But you know, I mean, Ryan is a quarterback whisper,
evaluator of talent, guy that can get a quarterback ready.
I'm not saying he's the best in college football, but
I don't know who's better. I mean, you know, we're

(10:43):
basically in a situation where he's got few peers in
terms of doing that, and his track record in terms
of doing that is pretty long and distinguished. So I
trust him implicitly when it comes to valuating quarterbacks, when
it comes to getting those guys ready for the games.
And he feels, like Julian saying, is the guy he
feels like, you know now the time. So he's got
my total support. But I agree with you that I
don't think this was This wasn't Kabookie theater where they

(11:05):
were just going out there and going through the motions
and he was going to do it like Julian's been
really good. And you know, I think Lincoln, Lincoln's a
very capable quarterback in his own way, but Julian's just
different and he's just he's just a pure thrower with
when you have a team like Ohio State's got and
you've got so much receiving talent and you have a

(11:28):
guy like Julian that can kind of get the ball
out there quickly on time, you know, put it in
good spots, keep it out of harm's way. It just
it just it was a very it was a very
gaunting task for Lincoln to beat him out. And you know,
I think, you know, Lincoln, uh, you know, acquitted himself
quite nicely and it's earned himself playing time situationally. But
Julian's just that number one guy. But he definitely earned

it on the field and it certainly wasn't handed to him. Yep.

And that's it. And that's the point is it's not
a it's not a fake thing. It's a hey, go
out and take it thing. Though you're the leader in
the clubhouse, go and prove me, prove me right real quick.
Day said about Julian, He's smart, poised, has good composure.
Can see it. He has good timing, has really built
command and confidence as time has gone on. Uh. Then

he said, you see the traits. You see the accuracy.
You see the ball getting out of his hand quickly.
We've heard about that quick release for months now. But
the ability to run the offense, get us into right
the right play, make good decisions, throw it away one
need when needed to, and ultimately take care of the
football is obviously huge. But he said he can fit
the ball to type spaces too. He has a good

(12:38):
feel for the pocket, and so all those things and
areas that we recognize he's taking steps forward here during
the preseason. So yeah, those are all things you want
to see from your quarterback. We saw a little bit
of a flash in the spring game. I know it's
a spring game, but you can still see the flash
of the accuracy, the zip, the command, being able to
lead his team downfield, make right the good decisions. So

he has to go out there in the field versus
Texas and do that, of course, But I'm gonna shift
gears into the other part about Sam's gonna say Nevada
is that I was talking to some to someboddies earlier
about saying size, and you know, there's still I guess
some some concern compared to what we've had like Cardil Jones,

(13:19):
C J. Stroud, Justin Field. I mean we've had a
lot of sixty four six'. FIVE i mean EVEN. J.
T barrett wasn't six foot or six. One he's about
six to, two and so he's probably the smallest guy
we've had in a minute to. START i Mean marktel didn't.
Start so you, know MY i guess AS i was
going back and forth about it's, like, yeah we want

a bigger. Guy But Nick saban had no problem with his.
Height neither Did, sarkisian who recruited him heavily At, texas
AND i mean obviously the whole country won at. Him
and So Ryan day didn't have an issue with his height.
Either so what say, YOU i, mean he's he's listed
at six', One Drew brees is listed at SIX i

think that probably you know how you kind of fluctuate
with the heights and what are they really with cleats
one type. Thing what's your concern level with his height
and being able to throw over the line and balls
being batted down and stuff like.

That, WELL i, think you, know it's always a. Concern
but you know when you see guys Like Bryce young
and you, know who can't be more than five to
eleven or whatever it, is and you know he's, short,
yeah he's, short you, know being able to make it.
Work you. Know the thing With julian is he's he's
an over the top. Thrower you, know he doesn't deliver
from three quarter. Arm he doesn't go sidearm at the,
ball so he's coming over the, top which gets the,

ball you, know out of harm's. Way it's never really
been an. ISSUE i mean in high school he didn't
have a lot of passes batted. Down you, Know franklin
don't have said he has that a lot of, passes you,
know batted. Down you, know he's got a great feel
in the. Pocket he's got kind of the anti McCord,
feel you, know Where i'm a cord but just kind
of have that magnetic thing where he'll be drawn to
the trouble in the in the. Pocket you, Know julian's

able to kind of feel and move around and find
the soft. Spot SO i you, know, look it's a,
concern but a mild you, know a two on a.
Scale of, ten you, know just because the way he
delivers the, ball LIKE i, said he throws it over the,
top which the same way you Know Drew brees did
and unable to to you, know excel at THE nfl.

Level But julian's that that kind of passer as. Well
SO i don't think it's going to be much of an.
Issue it'd be more concerned just about in his build
because the sixteen seventy games is a long, season and
especially you, know you, know was as the quarterback position
has become more of a, runner you, know at every,
level high, school college and now THE. Nfl so you,

know again slight concern About DO i like? THAT i
like having A Will, howard a big tank of a
guy out there at. Quarterback, YEAH i. Did that's a
guilty pleasure of mine THAT i like to have a
big quarterback who can carry down fourth and one and
get the yards and take the hits and and keep on.
Trucking but you, Know julian's a different kind of. Quarterback

and if they can if, yeah if they can protect,
him given he's gonna he'll do good. Things he'll deal
good things with his legs as. WELL i don't think
he won't be run in the tanky way Like will,
was but he'll be opportunistic and and move and he's
and he's quick and and, UH i think he can
pick up first. Downs but, yeah well at the, hype
not that concerned About AND i think they've done a

good job on strength and condition on. Him so he's
a he's a little, bigger little storty.

Here now, yeah, YEAH i THINK i think the durability
of the season is more of a concern than him
being too, Short SO i would agree with. That, SO
i mean he. Can and the other thing Is Ryan
day likes to remind people that he's, not, uh he's
not a. Statue AND i saw it first hand at,

practice but he. SCRAMBLED i mean he took off and looked.
Quick he's not a slow statue back. There and you
know that doesn't mean he's got to Be braxton or
at but you, know when he's escaping the, POCKET i
think he can move the chains and in a, pinch
so you, know, YEAH i hope he just the line protects,

him WHICH i believe they, will and he makes good
decisions to keep himself out of harm's. Way as far
as taking all that contact because he's still you, know
he's picked up, weight he's bigger than he was last,
year but he's still not like a, big, physical you,
KNOW afc nor type. Guy so that's that's gonna be.
Interesting AND i think that's a good segue to our

our backup, Quarterback Lincoln. Keyholes and so you, know we've
been saying for a while now that we felt that
he would. Play now early ON i said, packages AND
i still think, that you, know even if it's not
just go, line it's still. Packages and SO i think
we're gonna See lincoln. Play how, MUCH i don't, know
but you got to get him out, there his, athleticism

his ability to throw the ball, well BECAUSE i, MEAN
i do THINK i do Believe Ryan day when he,
said like earlier today in ABOUT i don't know if
you saw the the, presser but he straight up said
he gave an example like When fields was. Here he
didn't say chugging, off but he, said like we didn't

have a real like we didn't have real depth behind,
it like behind Justin. Fields he straight up said. That
now he, said, hey no, Offense i'm glad the kid
was here and all, that but it's just the truth
he said, here this is a true one, too like
a true two. Guys AND i do believe, THAT i,
Mean Lincoln keynos is clearly better than chugging. Off So
i'm saying that to say is That lincoln being brought

in is not just some oh well he has legs
and it's it's going to be very. Predictable lincoln can
throw the. Ball he's just not as precise as The
elite eleven Winner julian saying. Is but he can throw
the ball and he can be. Accurate he can make.
Throws so the fact that he'll come in won't just
be a one trick pony. Here you know he's going
to run AND i, think, uh they'll be able to

show that you have to respect his. Arm so with that,
SAID i Think lincoln is going to be needed this.
Year AND i do think even though it's not limited
to go line in short, YARDAGE i do think he
would be a weapon in that because, again if we
got defenses thinking he's just being brought in to pick
up the, run then we can Hit Brandon ennis on

a on a quick little out route or a quick
little stick router or you know whatever to move the
chains because the defense is all bunched up on the
line trying to stop the THE q. Run SO i
really think there's a lot of potential of what we
can do With lincoln and also to keep him engaged
because we are going to need both of. Them i'm
not calling for injuries Like god. Forbid but it's a long, season,

on WHAT i just?

Said, WELL i totally, agree And i'll add one one
other element and just in terms of pure armed, Strength
lincoln may have a stronger arm Than. Julian so watch
out for the deep shot With lincoln. Too so it
wouldn't just be you, know you, know the little pass
or the little thing like you, know they could bring

him in and then you, know run the straight nine
down the field and take a. Shot you know What i'm,
Saying Because lincoln's got that kind of armability as. Well
SO i Think, lincoln you, know presents a number of
different challenges that it'll be interesting to see how they kind
of get him in. THERE i think in This texas,
GAME i think the planners that they're gonna. THERE i
have a sneaking suspicion there's gonna it's gonna be like

the third series or the four. Series it's gonna be
Link lincoln's gonna come in and do. IT i think there's.
GONNA i think they they want to get him engaged
to that. Degree they really want him to feel vested
in the game, plan vested in this, team know that
it's it's not just. Talk they're gonna give him a
real opportunity to make a real difference with real. Players

it's not just gonna be garbage time or other things like.
That SO i think they're gonna try to get him
in there sooner than, later and, uh you, know get
his get his feet, wet and see what he can,
do so that that's that'll be something to look for as.

what his legs. DO i know he's a great, athlete

was a little disappointed WHEN i saw him out, there

and so With, lincoln you, KNOW i want to see
him like roll. OUT i want to. SEE i want
to see the coaches give him a run pass option
like in the sense that roll him, out give him
the ability to throw or take off something that's simple
to get him, going to put the defense in, conflict

and also to use his athleticism and his. Arm because you're, Right,
NEVADA i, mean he's. Accurate he's not as accurate as,
saying but he's, accurate and he's especially accurate enough and
has a strong enough arm to get it downfield To Jeremiah,
smith who's going to win a one versus one battle
a fifty to fifty ball, anyway get it To Milon
graham or Jj smith down the field when the defense

is bunched up at the line expecting a short yardage.
Run so you're, RIGHT i, MEAN i listen, Again just
like the whole offensive line situation we talked about, yesterday
just Because ethan may not be the starter doesn't mean
that it's a bad thing for the. Room like the
depth is, there and so just Because lincoln didn't win

the quarterback the starting quarterback position doesn't Mean lincoln is chugging.
Off LINCOLN i, believe truly is right there like he's he's,
nipping like he's. There he brings things to the table
that saying doesn't even though saying does, things something's. Better
and So i'm excited to see both of them. Play
AND i Really i'm really hoping they do get him in,
there and they in a timely fashion that makes sense

to See lincoln man because he was thrown to The

the psychology of these players right now, too because even

him today where he's got to sit there and See

starter he's, smart he delivers the ball. Well but you

it is. Like he's a competitor AND i think that you,

mean the one way to kind of rehabilitate somebody like
that and kind of get them mentally right is, to you,
know to dedicate yourself to playing that even if it's,

difficult even if it's a difficult. Spot if you say
it's a third series or the four, series that you're
going to stick to it and you're gonna play, him
and you you're going to get him, prepared to get
him that's the way that he's gonna you, know be
ready to. Go because if you don't do, that you
risk losing. Him And i'm not talking about losing like
he's gonna leave right, now but just, guys check. Out
and that happens all the, time you know What i'm. Saying,

like if you feel like somehow you've been passed, over
whether you feel it was rightfully passed over or wrongfully
passed over or just you, know unfortunately passed over or
whatever it, is it's hard to stay engaged, because you,
know getting ready for these games is you, know it's
it takes a full, commitment a full commitment on the,
field off the, field in the film room and study and,

testing getting yourself ready to. Play and if you're not right.
Mentally you, know it's, hard it's it's hard to you,
know if you're not really there to make that full.
Commitment SO i think with, them they've they've really got
to do a job of rehabilitating him, mentally because no
matter WHAT i, guarantee today hurt for, him you, know
because these are human, beings you. Know this isn't Just
maden where you put the, one you, know the arder

in and the second guy just goes off to the
virtual cloud somewhere and sit st he call his, number
and that, like this is a real, person and and
and he reads the papers or you, know listens to
the news or does. Stuff and here's Everybody julians, say
sees the cool things That julians saying with the crazy,
hair and you, know and Then lincoln's, like, WELL i
Guess i'm just the guy that just got passed over

For julian and that. Hurts SO i always have a
soft spot for the, underdogs for the guys that are
kind of buried on the depth, chart because life's not
always easy for those. Guys and, UH i really respect
the heck of all those guys that keep digging. That
that's Why Devin. Brown no matter what happened To Devin.
BROWN i saw the you went you, know obviously transferred
to cal went, there AND i think he's got beaten

out for the starting job at Cal, by you, know
by a. FRESHMAN i feel bad for. HIM i MEAN
i feel bad for him, because you, Know devin didn't
do anything here In Ohio state but try to. Help
he tried to. Help he stuck it. Out he didn't you,
know stayed through The national championship. Game he gave it as.
All he just wasn't good. Enough he just wasn't good enough.

Beer but you know that doesn't make a bad. Purpose
that just means he wasn't as good As Will. Howard
he wasn't as good As cale McCord was when he was.
Here BUT i really respect the guys that try and
stick it, out AND i really hope that they're able
to make a real role For, lincoln not a forced,
one but a real role for him where he can
be a meaningful.

i do tip my cap to him for staying last

to keep fighting because it's a. Freshman they're gonna make,
mistakes you, know things. Happen he's gonna have to be
ready and be engaged because you just never know with
