Speaker 3 (00:35):
Hello everyone, Welcome to the Call Session Recruiting Podcast, brought
to you by Buckey Huddle dot Com. I am Mark Givler,
joined today by Juck Maletti. We are continuing our signing
day recruiting capsules for the class of twenty twenty six
prospects who have signed with the Buckeyes. This next one
we're Ike. We're extra excited about because he's kind of

(00:56):
not unknown to us. But he's not a guy. He's
not a local guys guy we were able to see
ten times during the process. He's a guy who've really
had to kind of watch the film and watch the
camp performances and stuff see on the internet, and this
is a guy a lot of o High State fans
have grown to be very excited about. That is five
star defensive end carry Wilder, one of the big big
gets for Ohio State in this recruiting class, and Juck

(01:19):
looking back on it, it came at a time when
maybe angst was at an all time high for defensive
line recruiting. This did a lot too. I think colb
to I think calm the Natives down a little bit,
and it turned out that his stock only went up
after committing to the Buckeyes. And so this is one
I think everyone's excited about for his arrival in Columbus.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
In a few weeks without a doubt mark and these
I love doing these recruiting capsules and kind of just
going back in time through each guy's recruitment and how
this one kind of played out, because this one was
interesting and I think it shows a lot about what
Ohio State feels about him, because what you had here
was a guy who was ranked just inside the top

(02:04):
three hundred and they go out and visit him. My
career or Matt, Patricia and LJ go out visit him.
And from the time they went out and visited him
and offered him to the time he committed was like
eight days and on day number nine was a visit,
official visit scheduled to Notre Dame. And we don't often

(02:27):
see Ohio State go all in and say like, look,
we want it, we want it right now, we want
to commit right now. It's dot the i's, cross the
t's and get it done immediately. And it felt like
that's what they did, and it was calculated before that
Notre Dame visit. We want it, locked in, and it
shows us a lot about what they felt about him
at the time, which you know, again top three hundred kid,

(02:51):
but not a five star prospect. And ever since then
we've seen nothing but whoa, whoa, whoa. From the senior
tape to the five star camp, the rivals camp where
which will go down legendary Ohio State five star camp
where Sam Greer dominates on the offense, Carry Wilder dominates
on the defense, and they're the talk of the whole thing.

(03:14):
And after that one he shoots up into near five
star range and then it eventually gets into the Rivals,
five star, number one defensive lineman in the country and
a hugely productive senior year. And yeah, absolutely, and for
my money, this will be the most productive freshman in
this class.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Yeah, he's certainly gonna have some opportunity. He certainly has
the build I think to play early. He's not one
of those, you know, two hundred and twenty five pound
edge guys that you need to put thirty pounds on
before they're ready. So we'll get into that in a minute.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
We'll look at his film.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
This.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
This had a little bit of Jackson Smith and Jigba
vibes in terms of just the the ascension half, the
offer from Ohio State, and commitment and just like he
just like Shooting Star, maybe not as off the radar
as Jackson was when Ohio first offered him, but had

(04:10):
a similar vibe to it in terms of just every
time he was reevaluated, he seemed to impress people more
and more and more and eventually again finds himself in
five star territory. This again, this moved so quickly, and
I think when things moved that quickly with a kid

(04:31):
who's way out in California, I think everywhere at that
point's thinking, oh boy, like how like he got caught
up in the emotion. Why is this happening so quickly?
Oh my goodness, this isn't gonna stick. He's gonna go.
And it was funny because the in the in the
like the hours and day or two after he committed,

(04:52):
I was kind of or up until up and leaving
up stick comment. I was kind of told like, hey,
he doesn't want to stay. He's not staying California, and
so that was somewhat good to hear from the Ohio.
I'm like, okay, well, USC is just gonna come at
the end and they're gonna, you know, they're gonna drop
a bag and he's gonna stay home. And the whole

(05:14):
thing was no, he's not staying in California. So it's like, okay,
well then, you know, Notre Dame became kind of the
thing of we've got to watch Notre Dame and obviously
he can't bad visit, but I just I just think
this thing had so little drama. There was no build up.
There was like a little It was very quickly. We
talked about him for we were like, hey, watch this,
it's happening quickly. And then it was over and then

(05:37):
not a whole lot after that in terms of, you know,
he didn't shop himself around down a stretch. I thought
this was a very interesting recruitment and a unique, a
rare instance of like a five star player in a
premium position from three thousand miles away in a big
time state that everyone recruits, really not having a lot
of drama or hype or buzz, just just kind of flow,

(06:00):
did you know, kind of beneath the radar a little
bit for given his talent level and everything else.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
Really interesting when you put it that way, and you're
spot on with that analysis. When we look at the
other five star edges in this class with Carter Meadows
and Luke Waful and the amount of back and forth
in the amount of press and publicity that surrounded those
and of course very public, high profile losses that Ohio

(06:28):
State took in those I almost think the fact that
the Cary situation, because he kind of rose later than
those guys, they were kind of known commodities earlier, and
the fact that there was so little drama and that
it did happen so quickly, I think a lot of
people kind of lost sight on the fact that Hey,

(06:49):
this guy when we look at Wayfel, when we look
at Meadows and metals a little bit different.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
I think Wayfel would be more of a comp to carry.

Speaker 4 (06:57):
But Cary absolutely has all the potential that these guys have,
if not more, in my opinion, Like, he is absolutely
that kind of dude. And it's almost like it did
kind of maybe not get the same punch with the
reaction from the Buckeye fans, but you know, this guy's
absolutely gonna give us that punch. I think next year

(07:19):
on the field and it's gonna be an exciting one.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
He's all football mark.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
This kid's a serious young guy man, a ton of production,
ten sacks in his senior year, twenty tackles for loss,
lines up all over the line, the motor NonStop, impressive.
He's violent, he's very sudden, he's strong and really smart
football player. And you know, these are all the reasons

(07:44):
that he shot up the board. You could see it
all on tape. And obviously rivals number one defensive lineman.
Like that's not something any recruiting service takes lightly to
give someone that mark, and that means a ton. But
I just love the fact that Ohio State recognized it
and decided we're shutting this down, like we got to

(08:04):
get this guy and that's that, and it was just
priority number one.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
Full steam ahead.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
It makes me feel really excited about it, as if
I wasn't already. But I think it speaks volumes about him,
about who he is, obviously the personality fit, the type
of kid he is, like if you're if you're getting
Ohio State to like they want you that bad, that fast,
Like you were obviously one hell of.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
A guy individually.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
And I've talked to Cary a couple of times, and
I always had confidence from the gift that he was
never going to be someone who was going to entertain flipping.
He just seemed like he's just a real He's a
real serious young guy, Like this is the maturity and
almost like the talk you had with Blaine Bradford, how
you came away from that feeling like, Yeah, I think
this is real. I got the same type of feeling

(08:51):
from him. And I think that next year, when we
look at whether or not Kenyatta Jackson stays or whether
he goes to the NFL, regardless of what happens there,
I think we're gonna see carry wilder middle of the year.
This is a guy who's playing substantial snaps on the
defense two seventy.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
Now, by the way, Mark, yeah, yeah, I mean, I agree,
he's he's physically mature, he's mentally emotionally mature. This is
definitely a kid that has the look of an early contributor.
I love his versatility. This just feels like the type
of guy Matt Patricia would just particularly love and Larry two.

(09:30):
But but Matt Patricia with some of these odd fronts. Now,
you can kind of line him up anywhere you want.
And I know, we know Larry Johnson loves his Russian package.
So this is a guy maybe play inside on that,
but super explosive. It's it's scary to see how explosive
he is out of his stance, has change of direction,

(09:52):
his flexibility, all these things at six four two seventy,
very very rare in he doesn't really look to sixty
to seventy. He's still looking kind of long. He's he's
got a lot of upside I think beyond just what
we've talked about here. I just I think he's got

(10:12):
potential to be just an absolute monster at multiple spots
if they want him to play up and down the line,
and just I just I can't really say enough about
his upside they'd given the size and production and what
I watch on tape when I see him play like
a two hundred and thirty pound player at to sixty plus, right,

(10:34):
So I think this is certainly one of their best
pickups in this in this class, certainly one of the
top three or four players in this class for them,
and that that's probably being a little conservative. He is
to me kind of the Chris Henry Junior of the
defense in terms of his ability to play early, his stature,
his you know, physical maturity, everything else. I think those

(10:57):
are the two guys I look at where I see
not only some opportunity on the depth chart next year,
but more so just them kind of kicking the door
down from a physical standpoint and showing people like, yeah,
you're not going to keep me off the field as
a true freshman.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
Yeah, I'm totally with you and all that.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
And I mean just looking at this film, like, guys,
he's thirty yards downfield, Like it takes a special kind
of dude at two sixty to just pursuit NonStop all
the way down the field and it's that like, it's
that little bit of extra, not just that he's a
great player, but that little bit of extra is the
reason Ohio State went so hard so fast after Carry.

(11:37):
When we talk about this dude, I honestly think this
is the most exciting defensive line prospect we've had in years.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
I think he has the potential to be it.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
When we see Kayden Curry get it going and go
off in a game, and the way they're using kayd
and Curry lining him up all over the line, Like,
that's what I see out of Carry, That's what I
see him being utilized as.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
And I think he has as just the potential to be.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
You know, this guy is a first rounder coming out
at some point like this is that kind of dude.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
He really really is special. Watching him his his get
off at two sixty is is nuts. He's got a
great swim move already. Again, the effort he puts in
the pursuit, you know, there's a little bit. I don't
think he's gonna outgrow the position the way Edric did.
But I watched Edric at Buford and he's a guy

(12:32):
that would run plays down thirty yards or you know,
they'd run away from him and chase a play down
twenty make twenty thirty yards to make a play, and
that's what what Cary does as well. I think Carey
is a little more twitchy, which will allow him in
a little more flexible, which will allow him to stay

(12:52):
on the outside. But again with Matt Patricia's defense, I
think he's I think he's gonna play everywhere, and Caden
Curry is a great comparison. We've seen Cayden play inside
and outside, but we've also seen Cayden like dropping the
coverage and be disruptive with coverage and cover the flat,
and I think Cary can do that those things as well.
So this was a huge pickup for Ohio State. Obviously

(13:13):
a huge signing. He was very early. He signed very early,
Like he must have like right away when when because
I mean he's three hours behind in California.

Speaker 1 (13:26):
Oh, I mean time of the day.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
Yeah yeah, yeah, he would like there was no like, oh,
what's he gonna do? Liked this people was in before,
like a lot of the East Coast, the Eastern time
zone kids. He had his l a lion for a
lot of the Eastern times kids, Like he was like
on it.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
So was so early that when I saw the graphic,
Sohio State was tweeting out the graphics for each guy
like that. When I saw that graphic, I was like, well,
aren't they gonna wait till the guys actually send in
the l o I before they do. That's how early
it was, because I was like that, you know, it
just he's not up yet.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
He's in californ He.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Wasn't on my radar yet. Yeah, it's like, you know,
we'll see Corey Wilders, you know, you know, maybe around
lunchtime or just before lunchtime. And it was like it
was like they are like, oh my goodness, he must
have like he must have been like at the at
the computers waiting to hits tend or whatever about seven
am or whatever it was. Yeah, so this guy was

(14:22):
all buck eye. You know, I constantly hear Ohio State
fans we only want players who want to be Buckeyes, which
I sometimes take casue with, but but for this purpose,
this is a kid who just wanted to be a
buck Eye. He got his offer. He didn't take him
a lot of time to think about it.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
He visited.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
That was that and then no drama afterwards. And then
immediately signed. No signing day weirdness, just a kid who
is all in on playing football at Ohio State and
playing for his coaching staff. So this is a player
I think Ohio State fans will will learn to greatly
appreciate his contributions on the field, but also just his

(15:00):
passion for Ohio State as well for a kid coming
from California.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
So juck.

Speaker 3 (15:06):
Any final thoughts here as we wrapped this one up,
A huge five.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
To your point right there. You know that we only
want guys who want to be Buck guys. I hear
people say that a lot of times after a missed recruitment.
It is the coach's job, in the recruiters job to
make that young man see why he wants to be
a Buck guy. And LJ and Matt Patricia absolutely crushed
it on this one, absolutely crushed it everything from start

(15:33):
to finish, seamless, wonderful signing. They deserve a ton of
credit for this one. And the Buck guys got a
total dog coming in carry Yep, gonna be good.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
Bee guy who plays early. We were both in alignment
on that. So thanks everyone again for watching listening. We're
gonna start rolling these out again. We wanted to kind
of get past the Big ten championship fall out, if
you will, and then give you guys some recruiting content
here during the holidays until a fairly big game being
played uh in in in Dallas, eventually here at the

(16:04):
end of the month, So keep it right here at
bucke huddle dot com and YouTube dot com slash bucke Huddle,
as we'll be back here with some more signing evaluations.
