Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hello, everybody, Welcome to the Buckeye Weekly Podcast. I'm Tony
Gerdaman here by myself for this episode, another breaking news edition,
as the Buckeys have landed a commitment from twenty twenty
seven linebacker Quintin Cipher out of Millbrook High School in Raleigh,
North Carolina. Cipher six foot two, two hundred and twenty pounds,
(00:24):
rated the number eleven linebacker and the twenty twenty seven
class for the twenty four to seven Composite, the number
one hundred and ninety four player overall and the number
eight player in the state of North Carolina. He is
now the eighth member of Ohio State's twenty twenty seven
recruiting class. And I'll go ahead and I'll throw some
(00:47):
clips up of Cipher's soft junior, nope sophomore season. I'll
go ahead, throw some clips up of Cipher's most recent season,
which concluded this year. And you will see that boy
a smooth linebacker and a guy that can can cover.
(01:08):
You'll see that. You'll see a hard hitter sidelined to
sideline kind of guy. And as I'm watching him, I
always like to give you a cump that you will
know at least in the name of and so I
try to keep that Ohio State based. And when I
(01:29):
watch Quentin Cipher in these clips, I see a little
Pete Warder, and I think Pete Warner is one of
the more underrated Ohio State linebackers of the last fifteen
or twenty years. A guy that could play all over
the field, inside linebacker, outside linebacker, and then we also
saw him drifting back as a safety at times in
(01:51):
that twenty nineteen defense. And not that you'll need to
see Quentin Cipher doing that, but he has the kind
of versatility that would allow whoever may be the defensive
coordinator at Ohio State in twenty twenty seven and beyond
to do some different things with because he, to me,
is a three down linebacker. He can play in pretty
(02:13):
much any kind of defense, and an ideal inside will
type of linebacker who can cover and run and recognize
and seems to really really enjoy the game. He commits
to Ohio State over offers from all of the top
schools around the nation, including Georgia, Alabama, Miami, the big names,
(02:39):
including as I said, even Miami, and there as well.
This past season in twenty twenty five, he put up
one hundred and eighty one tackles according to maps preps
five and a half sacks, forty eight tackles for loss,
which that's a lot, five PBUs, four interceptions, three fumble recoveries,
(03:01):
three forced fumbles, and you also see him a little
bit on offense, carrying the ball kind of as an
h back and catching it as well. As a sophomore
in twenty twenty four, one hundred and seventy five tackles
with thirty one and a half tackles for lost, twelve
and a half sacks, eight PBUs, three interceptions, and a
forced fumble as a true freshman starter as a true freshman,
(03:25):
one hundred and fifty five tackles, eight and a half
tackles for lost, three and a half sacks, three PBUs,
two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble. Fire
to do some quick math, that's about ninety tackles for
loss in three seasons. Would expect that he will be
a four year starter in high school. If he is not,
boy go ahead and sign those linebackers that are starting
(03:48):
in front of Quentin's cipher for next year, but he
will head to Ohio State eventually. And now kicks off
or helps to kick off the defensive class for o
Higher State. As I said, the third defensive commits, joining
the safety's Eli Johnson out of Texas and Angelo Smith,
who is the younger brother of Jeremiah Smith out of
(04:08):
Shamanda and Madonna. There's still plenty of more work to do.
The twenty twenty seven class is still very young, ranked
the number four class right now, still about you know,
twelve months and change or eleven months and change or
(04:29):
fourteen months and change, depending on when you want to
consider the twenty twenty seven class to be concluded. One
note on the twenty twenty seven recruiting cycle. Ohio State
wide receiver target Eric MacFarland, who's one of the best
players in a nation, a twenty twenty eight prospect as
we classified to twenty twenty seven, so that will be
(04:51):
an interesting watch to see how Ohio State can maintain
their relationship with him, even though Brian Hartline is off
to the University of South Florida. And it's a pretty
darn good group of receiver targets for Ohio State in
that twenty twenty seventh class. We know they already have
a commitment from Wayne receiver Jamiir Brown, who is one
(05:13):
of the top one or two receivers in a nation.
Still working on Indiana receiver Monk shown sales. That's gonna
be a fight with some of the major players in
the Midwest and nationally. Of course, Eric McFarland, who we
have seen now twice at Ohio State's June camps, and
even though he's only five eight or five nine, he
always plays bigger than that. He's explosive, he's quick, he
(05:35):
is compact, and he is confident. And the way we
saw him in June interacting with the Ohio State receivers,
it was like he was already a buck eye. Now
still a long way to go, but that way to
go has shortened by a year because of his move
to twenty twenty seven. So it will be interesting to
see how well Ohio State can can get it to him.
(05:59):
But again, this is a Quentin Cipher show, so he
saw the clips there. What do you guys think, you
know you're you're watching it, And as I said, he's
just really really smooth and has good speed, and there's
a good athlete, very like there are no issues there.
(06:19):
I don't know. You look at him and it's like, well,
what can't he do? I don't know, and you know what,
we'll have to stay half him doing. Long way to
go until we get to that point, but overall a
lot to work with for James Laurnidis, who continues to
recruit linebackers pretty darn well and at this point maybe
you know, I think you could consider him the best
(06:40):
recruiter on staff, and he's continued to keep that going.
With Cipher in twenty twenty seven, will not be the
last linebacker for the Buckeyes in that class, as we know,
he will continue to add to it, and then when
Cipher does get here, he's going to have plenty of
you know, to compete against. This is not something that
(07:03):
you know, Lourainiis doesn't take a year off in terms of, well,
we'll load up in twenty twenty five and then let
it soften in twenty twenty six, because we know they
loaded up in twenty twenty five, load it up in
twenty twenty six, load it up in twenty twenty four.
So this is a constant for the Buckeyes and now
Quentin seiher the latest to be added to that. So
(07:26):
that will do it from here. If you're watching on YouTube,
please go ahead and give us some thumbs up. We
would appreciate that. If you are listening, go ahead in
a five star rating interview as we always appreciate that.
