Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, everybody, Welcome to the Buckeye Weekly Podcast. I'm Tony
Gerdaman here as always with Tom or Tom. How's it going, Tony?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
I was about to say it's not as always because
we're at the Cotton Bowl, but this is three years
in a row we've been at the Cotton Bowl, so
maybe it is as always.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
But anyway, we're at the Cotton Bowl now.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
As always, we are at Cotton Boll love being here,
always fun to be here, and we are here now
for the first time in a long long time talking
about Ohio State versus Miami and tom first time these
two teams have ever played each other in the Cotton
Ball I can guess that knowing it pretty certainly, and
also I've done enough research into the rivalry that this

(00:38):
has never happened before. Both fan base is very excited
about it, as they should be, and so now to
upset one side of that fan base and encourage the other.
For today, we're going to talk about how Ohio State
wins this game.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Are you saying Ohio State is going to win this
game guaranteed and that Miami has no chance?

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Is that what I'm hearing?

Speaker 1 (01:00):
That is not what we're saying, we're saying this is
a We're just doing an exercise here in terms of
if Ohio State wins, how will it happen.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Why wouldn't you think Miami could win?

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Well, here's the thing, Tom, Well, we're going to do
another show where we talked about if Miami were to win,
how would that happen?

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Pretty disrespectful to do one where Miami loses first.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Well, we didn't want to do it alphabetically because that's
you know, people expect that we're doing this the way
the Civil War was won North to South. W's the
way all things are done. And I don't make up
the rules, I just follow them. And so, yes, we
were talking today about how Ohio State will win this game, Tom,

(01:41):
and for that to happen, got a win the line
of scrimmage? Right now? How much do they need to
win the line of scrimmage? I don't know how much
did Miami win the line of scrimmage against Texas A
and M and that was a rock.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Fight, right I think Ohio State needs to I don't
know that Ohio State even needs to win the line
of scrimmage because I think Goo State is more talented
in a lot of areas and you know again, can
you tell we've been privy to Miami fans and our
YouTube comments for a while. Here's here's how you know
Ohio State is more talented. Look at the list of

(02:15):
individual award winners nationally.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Look at the list.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Of all Americans nationally, Like Ohio State is has significantly
more players who are projected to be high NFL draft picks,
all that kind of stuff. So Ohio State has a
talent vantage. We'll get to the way Miami wins on
the Miami Show if we get around to, which we
will do. But the way Ohio State wins the game

(02:40):
is by not letting Miami win the game. Now always
State wins the game by not losing the game, which
sounds really, you know, reductive, But also Ohio State just
needs to not lose the line of scrimmage, especially on
when Ohio State has the ball. Ohio State has superior talent.
Ohio State's wide receivers should be able to be productive,
Julian say, and should be able to connect with them

(03:01):
and find some opportunities downfield. Ohio State should be able
to run a ball at least a little bit. They
just have to not lose it the line of scrimmage
that that to me is really it's again it's a
little reductive, but also it's really just feels like the
path from Miami to win the game is a much
more narrow than Ohio State's path, and the path on
Miami to win the game is get a bunch of

(03:22):
pressure on Julian saying, So if Ohio State just doesn't
let Miami, get a bunch of pressure on, Julian saying, well,
that feels like that's a long way to go to
Ohio State winning the game.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
I mean pretty much just explained how Miami is going
to win win the game, so we don't even need
to do we don't even need to do that show.
But yeah, containing Ruben Bain and messidor key messidor keeping
them the two defensive vends the brushed pass or they
get after it. They are tops in the nation in
terms of quarterback hurries and quarterback pressures. So yeah, if

(03:53):
you can give Julian saying enough time to throw to
the coverages and get into First Street secondary thirty those
sorts of things as time, because he did not have
time against Indiana and they had some stuff drawn up
downfield that generally goes well for Ohio State, and so
when there wasn't time to do that, things suffered and

(04:13):
they scored ten points. So this one, yeah, do whatever
you can to slow down that pass rush and negate
that and even really whether that's quick passes, whether that's
run the ball right at him, some of those things.
You certainly keep a tight end in something like that.
But that's going to be the key is yeah. Yeah,

(04:35):
it all starts up front tom as we all know.
But with Miami's defense and putting up points against the defense,
it's like stopping those two guys is the key.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yeah, the interi Miami's defensive line is good, but it's
not you know, Reuben Bain in a key messador. They
are kind of the exception to the Ohio State's gonna
have a bunch of guys picked before Miami, does you know.
Ohio State's going to have five of the top eight
guys that get picked in the NFL Draft this this
upcoming season between these two teams, at least five of
them are going to be from Ohio State. Mesidor and

(05:06):
Bain are projected as maybe the top two edge guys
in the draft period. Full stop, if you can get
if you can sort of negate them. The rest of
the defense is good, but not that level of good.
And Ohio State has just more weapons on defense, which
is one of the reasons why Miami's defense is really good.
But they're not as good as Ohio State's defense.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah, and we've seen Miami give up some points over
the course of the year, and we've seen some receivers
have success against them, Louisville included or especially, And so
we've seen some avenues of where you can do some things.
I don't expect Ohio State to I don't expect either
team to run the ball all that well. So I
don't know that that's a key to winning the game.

(05:48):
I think it's if you do it, you might win. Yeah. No,
but I don't know that you have to average four
yards of carry twinn escap because I'm not sure anybody's
going to average four yards carry. But I know somebody
is going to win the game. So I think the
running game, the the need to run the game is
to run the ball is kind of negated in this
one a little bit newtered a little bit, and so
I don't know how important it is, but I know

(06:09):
when Ohio State wants to dial those shots up, they
need to be able to protect Julian sand And so
if they can get two big hits to one to
Cardinal take one of Jeremiah Smith, that could be enough
to certainly make it a four quarter game for o
High State, but also two touchdowns with the Ohio States
defense is generally enough to win. And I know, I know, Miami,

(06:30):
I know, I hear you. You're saying We're you're gonna
hold You're gonna hold Miami to thirteen points or whatever.
I mean, we just saw Texas A and m do it,
so we know. And yes it was Wendy. We know
all we do now Thomas caveats, Yes, yes, we understand. Uh,
we're just so battered at this point for the Miami fans.
But I don't know that either team will need all

(06:54):
that many points to win this game. So if you
can hit those shots that you've dialed up, that's advantage
Ohio State.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Right, Ohio State, if they hit a couple big plays
and can just be functional the rest of the game,
are going to win this game. If Ohio State gets
to twenty four points, Ohio State is going to win
this game, Miami probably needs to hold Ohio State under
twenty to have a you know, we're a realistic chance
outside of like real edge cases where oh the.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Defense scored a touchdown and so do the special teams.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Okay, sure, then you can score twenty seven, thirty one
points whatever it is. Realistically, Miami's going to be ten, thirteen, fourteen,
seventeen points somewhere in that range. And so then you
know Ohio State is going to score some Even against Indiana,
Ohio State put up ten points, so you figure Ohio State,

(07:41):
you figure that sort of the table stakes is Ohio State.
Ohio State basically starts the game with ten points, and
you're going to You're going to essentially assume that they're
going to have that many. So then it's just a
matter of can you keep Ohio State from hitting the
big plays, can you keep Ohio State in the red zone.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
Can you hold them to.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Threes or attempts for threes because you know, the attempts
for threes have no always going through the uprights for
Ohio State this year. So there's a lot of that
little stuff where maybe Ohio State can put together some
sustained drives. But if Miami can get them off the field, Okay,
then then you know that that's why Indiana won Indiana
one because Ohio State had two possessions in the red
zone in the second half, back to back drives, long

(08:18):
sustained seven minute drives that ended in a Julian Sayin's
knee going down on a fourth and one that got
overturned on replay, and then Jaden Fielding missing a short
field goal. If you can hold Ohio State to kick
and field goals, that's going to be you know how
much in Miami run the ball is one thing? How
you know what is Ohio State's efficiency effectiveness in the

(08:41):
red zone? You know, you tell me what a percentage
of Ohio State red zone trips they're scoring touchdowns on,
and I will probably tell you if they're winning this game,
because they're gonna get down there, I think, right, I don't.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
I don't think Miami is going.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
To just completely lock this Ohio State offense down. So
they're going to get down into the red area, at
least the yellow area where you're sort of in.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
Score or range.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
If Miami can hold them to field goals, that's you know,
that goes a long way Ohio State. Just we have
sort of gotten an indication that Ohio State has learned
its lesson from some of its approach in the red
zone in previous games, where they've gone to thirteen personnel
and fourteen personnel and you're taking your best players off
the field instead of throwing the ball to your best

(09:21):
players in the red zone. I get the sense that
that's going to be there's going to be a different
approach in this game. And if there's a different approach
in this game, then it is incumbent on Miami's corners
to win those one on one battles with Jeremiah Smith
and Carnell Taate.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
Yeah, I'm just looking at that. That Indiana gaming for
High State did some damage to their touchdown percentage in
the red zone, dropping them down to thirty fourth in
the nation. They score two thirds of the time, and
because that was the number I had in my mind,
two thirds might get it done, like sixty percent, three
for five, two for three, yeah, three for five, certainly
three five.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Then you're at twenty seven. Well, I mean, assuming you
make your field goals, you're yeah, you're you're twenty four,
twenty seven points. And again twenty four point, barring a
pick sakes, barring a punt return for a touchdown, which
are certainly possible for Miami, but barring that, twenty four
to twenty seven points wins this game for Ohio State.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
Last thing for me on the offense in terms of
how Ohio State wins this game. We saw against Indiana
Julian say, connect with Jeremiah Smith deep, but it didn't
lead to a touchdown. If you're going to beat Miami,
let it lead to a touchdown. Go all the way.
And that was I think another issue of not having
much practice time, being injured, being banged up. They've had

(10:30):
all the practice time in the world. They should have
the chemistry back. But then also, you know how much
timing does it how much time does it take to
get the timing down in this game. But I just say,
when you have those opportunities, if you're a higher state,
make them count and connect on them, because it takes
a lot to get that play done. And Ohistate has

(10:51):
been effective at it this season, the deep shots, and
they weren't against Indiana and you saw the results.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
So yeah, yeah, that you have to you have to
capitalize on your opportunities in this game.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
This is.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
This is I don't know that I've heard Ryan Day
say the phrase talent equated, but it's a it's a
talent similar thing. And for Miami fans who are watching,
Ryan Day will use the phrase talent equated when Ohio
State's playing Penn State or Michigan or Oregon or another
school that recruits kind of consistently in the top ten nationally.
And I know Miami has been there, but they haven't
been there over the span of four years.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
This is a game where the.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Talent is close enough that you have to capitalize on
your opportunities because this is not just going to be
a free fire zone where they're just they can score whenever.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
They want and wherever they want and however they want.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
They've got to They've got to capitalize on their on
their opportunities. But you know, you get the sense that
there are matchups like we talked about where with Miami,
where Miami presents a matchup challenge for Ohio State. The
secondary for Miami is good, but it's not incredible, and
Ohio States wide receivers are incredible. So you know, I
have I have yet to watch a team that I thought, well,

(11:56):
that's that's the team whose secondary matches up great with
Ohio States wide receivers. It's really just can you get
to the quarterback or not?

Speaker 1 (12:02):
And one one last thing with the ISID offense against
the Miami defense, I wonder what you do with Kante Scott,
the Miami nickelback who is all over the place. I
wonder if Ohio State tries to occupy him with Carnel
and Jeremiah Smith that way, if he does blitz and
he's a great blitzer, yeah, now you've left a safety

(12:23):
or somebody to deal with those. So are you discouraged
from attacking if he's got one of those two guys
on the other side of him and it's like, well,
you better just better do what you do. Let's let's
call it audible and not attack. Does that keep it from
attacking or if he does attack, does that open things
up for Ohio State with one of those two guys. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
And one of the things one of the games where
we rewatched was the Miami SMU game where Jacoby Thomas,
the one of the safeties for Miami SMU, was able
to sort of manipulate Miami's coverage by with their formation
and putting some guys and you know, putting one of
their outside receivers in the slot and able to hit
some big plays down feel. We've Ohio State do that
at times this season. If you can get that kind

(13:04):
of match up, that is a win. Is that is
a winning matchup, And it's just a matter again of okay,
is that there? Because Scott's blitzing off the corner and
then you've got to make sure you pick him up.
And if you pick him up, then you have a
real opportunity downfield. But you know, so much of this
game comes down to that half second of does the
guy get there or does the guy almost get there?

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Because if the guy almost gets there, that's a big problem.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
For Miami because that means someone else's you know, probably
open downfield.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
Defensively for Io State to get this win. It's interesting
because we saw Mark Fletcher Miami running back rush for
one hundred and seventy yards and Miami barely pull it
out against Texas Ay and them. So I'm reticent to say, well,
Ohio State needs to stoff run.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Sure, yeah, but we.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
Saw Miami go off and it lets you what it
led to. So yeah, you certainly woant to stopped run
and if you do that, Ohio State advances their opportunity
to win the game. But it always comes back to me,
to Carson beck and is in making him uncomfortable, making
him whether it's sim pressures or actual pressures, sometimes it

(14:06):
doesn't matter, just making him Matt Patricia against Carson Bak
changing the picture, but also figuring out ways to attack
this offensive line the best because these are two of
the best offensive tackles at Ohio stable Face, one of
the best centers at Ohio stable Face, certainly one of
the best offensive lines. Maybe I think we talked like

(14:27):
you know, the Indiana maybe the two best offensive lines
Ohio State is faced this year, and so getting whatever advantage,
whatever kind of win you can get there. Again, make
it count. If you do beat Mauiinoga Mawiinoa on a
pass split, on a pass rush, the right tackle, make

(14:48):
it count, you know, get to the quarterback, hurry him up,
and when there are throws that get batted up or
that are errant, come down with them. I think if
Ohio State wins, Ohio State can win this game without
an interception. Yes, but every interception increases their odds or
increases their point total or decreases Miami's by three to

(15:10):
seven points.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
Right, Well, Ohio State can win this game with an
even turnover margin, it's going to be it's not impossible
for Miami to win with a even turnover margin, but
it's gonna be more difficult it. Certainly, if there's an
even turnover margin, you would say Ohio State is probably
seventy percent likely to win the game, sixty p seventy
percent likely to win the game at least if you

(15:31):
can just get If you get one turnover, then Miami's
digging out of a hole because then they need to
get another one just to sort of get back to even.
And obviously, if you get a turnover and you do
nothing with it, you pump the ball and you know
you don't capitalize on it, that's one thing. But if
you get one where you stop the you know, you
stop Miami in the red zone, or you get one
deep in Miami's own end and you can give your

(15:52):
offense a short field. Any of those are potential really
game changers. And we have seen Carson Back have an
issue with passes getting batted up in the air. I mean,
you know, Julian Saying has.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
At times as well.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
But it has really been something that we've noticed a
lot with Carson Beck, which he's not a short guy,
so with a little surprising to see that, but it
feels like it happens more often than.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
It should with him.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
Yeah, definitely, And when it comes to stopping him, slowing
him down the entire passing game, they get rid of
the ball so quickly and they'll throw a much short
stuff to malakay Tony. They're freshman wide receivers. So what
does Ohio State do? What is a winning way to
defend him? Because I'm wondering. I don't think this is
what is going to happen, but it would be interesting

(16:35):
to watch Caleb Downs just mirror him. But then that
takes Caleb Downs kind of out of what he does.
So that's why I don't expect it to You try
to handle it with what you've got or with Regil
Styles Junior as that slot as that nickelback, and he's
been very good this season. The issues he's had is
getting beaten deep and he's had the coverage there, but

(16:56):
other teams have made plays that's not malakay Tony's game
and and of is like one hundred and twenty targets.
Somebody posted this, I think on our message boarders tweeted
it at me was one hundred and twenty targets this year,
only like thirty have been beyond ten yards. And that's
not twenty yards that's or thirty yards that's yeah, that
maybe eleven yards right for far the majority of those.

Speaker 2 (17:17):
Yeah, and that really you know, you when you look
at what Indiana was.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
Able to do.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
Charlie Becker, their wide receiver, who hid a couple of
long ones, one against Lorenzo Styles, one against Jermae Matthews.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
Those were downfield.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
Those were the ones where Ohio State got got a
couple of times, and those were both really important plays
during the you know, in the flow of the game.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
That's not really what Tony's game is.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
And the outside receivers for Miami are good, but they're
not incredible. You know, there's no question who the best
wide receiver on Miami is this year, and it's Tony
and so then if you can't get No, that's the
nicest thing I've ever said about you, and I wasn't
talking about you, it is that that's not where Miami's
you know, where Miami's offense really comes in and you know,

(18:07):
I know we're going to have all sorts. Oh, you
guys don't know how good CJ.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
Daniels is.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
Daniels played in ten games, he was hurt, He missed
a couple of games in the whole season. Thirty seven
catches for four hundred and twenty yards Killen Mary and
forty four catches five hundred and ninety yards like they're both,
you know, CJ. Daniels has seven touchdowns. He's been a
very impactful player at times. But he's not someone who's
going to most likely, you know, based on what we've
seen from him so far, he's not the guy who's
going to have ten catches for one hundred and eighty

(18:33):
yards and three touchdowns. That's not really what he's been
this year. He's had some real highlight real moments. I'm
sure everyone remembers the catch right before halftime against Notre Dame,
but that's not you know, this is this is not
a Miami offense that is like living and dying with
the outside receivers the way Ohio State kind of is.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
So you know, Ohio State's received you know, has two outside.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Receivers who are phenomenal Miami has two outside receivers who
are like good but not phenomenal, and Miami has an
insight has a slot guy who is phenomenal.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
In Ohio State.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Slot receiver Brandon Innis has been like good this year,
but not phenomenal. You know, I think you would choose,
if you were to choose, you would choose to have
two really strong outside receivers who then can also play
in the slot and you can move guys around for formation.
Tony is an outside receiver, like he's a phenomenal athlete,
but he's also listed it but five' ten you, know
which generally means he's five eight and a half and

(19:24):
that's not. Necessary like he can, jump he's a, phenomenal
but he's also giving up probably four to five inches
To Davis enignos And Jermaine. Matthews and, yeah you can,
jump but so can those. Guys so it just feels
like that's going to be a challenge for.

Speaker 3 (19:38):
Him and if they, can't you, know they rely on
him for so much of their, offense whether it's catching
or running or sometimes.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
Throwing, yeah so if For Higher state's going to win this,
game it's tackled him before he can get to his,
blockers and sometimes there are plays where he has no
blockers and so it's just three on one and it's
much easier to tackle. Him but he mentioned Killing mary
and he stepped. Up it's the injury to h To.
Daniels the last Time daniels had more than three catches

(20:06):
was The louisville game and that's mid, season and yes
he was, injured but you Know mary has stepped. Up
but neither of these guys scare, you like Either Ohio
state's outside receivers. Scary they concern. You they keep you
up at, night and SO i think that's that's an
area where A High states certainly has an. Advantage but

(20:26):
with Malak, toni it's tackle him and maybe don't punt to. Him,
yeah BUTT O High. State they are so solid in
terms of they know exactly what they're gonna get out
of their punk return and they're they're gunners can get
there in time because it's not the deepest. Punt there's
no out kicking your. Coverage. Yeah For Ohio state they

(20:47):
forty two yards and they like. It, yeah and the
force is a fair catch or. Whatever SO i don't know.
THAT i wonder if there's an advantage there FROM i
don't know that there is an advance From miami and
the especially teams Because whistly doesn't typically allow those sorts of.
Things they kicked the ball out of the end zone now, Right,
yeah they don't OutKick their covers with the punt because

(21:07):
they're not generally able.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
To, yeah this is another.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
Area it's like turnovers where If special teams is even
that's a win For Ohio.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
State but that's an.

Speaker 2 (21:15):
Area that's another area where If miami doesn't win the turnover,
battle Can miami block a field, goal block a pont
return to kick off fifty, yards RETURN u pont fifty
yards a full field position that, Way if they, can't
then if it's just If Special teams is just kind
of a, wash that's a win For Ohio. State it's
just these are all these sort of edge areas Where

(21:37):
miami has to win some of these or it gets
harder and harder to see how they, get you, know
if they can't get to the, passer if they can't you,
know win in special, teams if they can't you, know
create a turnover, too it's just hard to see where they.
Win you, KNOW i was pulling up a game.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
Log for FOR.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
Cj daniels and his high for the year with seven
catches for seventy four yards Against louisville and that was
a game they. Lost he had five catches for seventy
eight yards and a couple of touchdowns Against Florida, state, which,
yeah if they can do, that, yeah, Sure if he
can do that Against Ohio, state, yeah, absolutely that would
be a you, know that would be a winning you,
know potentially a winning performance For. Miami Florida state's passing

(22:18):
offense giving up seven yards per, attempt that's fifty eighth
in the. Country Ohio state giving up five point three
yards per, attempt that's second in the. Country so it's
just has he done, it, yes has he done it
against the team remotely.

Speaker 3 (22:30):
The caliber Of Ohio.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
State, no that's and you, Know Notre dame Was Notre
dame was kind of okay this. Year they were twenty
second in the, country and that's Probably i'm just scanning
through right. Now louisville was kind of, close but six
yards in, attempt but he picked up what maybe ten
yards in attempt seven for seventy four to ten point

(22:51):
six yards per attempt and that's you, know if he
has seven catches for seventy seventy four, yards you kind of.
SHRUG i look at that those or you, Know Malik
Hi toni having seven catches for seventy five, yards and it's, like,
okay are they able to run the, Ball because if
they're not able to run the, ball then, AGAIN i
don't know where you, know seven catches for seventy four

(23:12):
yards is like you're moving the, chains but you're not.
Scoring you're not putting up a lot of points in
that you're not hitting big. Plays and, Yes miami was
able to run the ball great Against TEXAS a and
M TEXAS a and m in rushing, defense sixty eighth
in the, country giving up four point one eight yards per.
Carry Ohio state fifth in the, country sixth in the

(23:34):
country two point eight three yards per, rush which is Basically.
Miami it's a little better Than miami's yards per. Rush
and you, Know miami fans, like, oh our rush defense is. Incredible,
Yeah miami's rush defense is very. Good Ohio state's is slightly.
Better so this is WHY i think we're both saying
probably not expecting either team to run for four and
a half five years carry and, again If Ohio state

(23:56):
can just run the ball as well As, Miami i'm
still looking and, going, okay if the run, games even
if the turnovers are, even if the special teams are,
even then you're just kind of, going, okay who has
a better passing? Game AND i know WHO i would
bet on There.
