Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hello, everybody, Welcome to the Buckeye Weekly Podcast. I'm Tony
Gerdaman here as always with Tom war Tom.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
How's it going, Tony?

Speaker 3 (00:11):
You remember in the early days of Twitter when everyone
would have these like fun hashtags and like these brands
would have hashtags and then they would sort of get
co opted. Back in the day, the Atlantic Coast Conference
used the hashtag hashtag go acc and that was supposed
to be like we're all here together, and it sort
of got co opted by the snarkier set of Twitter

(00:35):
putting hand up here, Hi, that you would have these
just you know, it was always somehow always involved wake
Forest and they would punt the ball for negative eighteen
yards and it would that highlight would get quote tweeted
with hashtag go acc. Tony, We're about to talk about
the Miami SMU game and this was one of the

(00:56):
most hashtag go acc games I have seen in a minute.
Because do you like penalties? Uh huh? Do you like
I don't know, turnovers? Yep, drops, pass it? Oh boy
to It was hashtag go acc all the way down.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Do you like a game that you lose that you
shouldn't have lost, that you lose because of a personal
foul on a play that is blown dead, but your
defensive end can't stop trying to hit the quarterback and
then they knock him down and you give SMU life
and they take that life and they.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Go ahead and win the game.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
If you like that hashtag, go acc because that's the
game we're talking about here. One of Miami's two losses.
This is a twenty six twenty loss in overtime to
SMU and Tom. I want to start as we did
with the last rewatch of the Miami Hurricanes with Carson
Beck and for me, the number one thing that I
took out of this one is how effective and how

(01:51):
much he ran the ball, which was a surprise there.
He kept it a couple of times on the read.
He scrambled well and when I say scrambled well, picked
up seven yards and that's all you're asking him to do.
And I was surprised at how much he did. And
it's not like I mean, he finished with five carries
for seventeen yards along of seven. But the fact that

(02:14):
we've spent the last few days talking about does our
vel Reese even need to worry about spying the quarterback? No,
But there is this aspect that Carson Beck has the
ability to and the willingness to pull the ball and go.
We even saw one there was an RPO where the
first the p wasn't there, so he kept it and

(02:35):
ran sort of like a quarterback counter that didn't really
do much, but the willingness and the fact that we
saw it as much as we did five times, but
that just something different, something that says, you know, just
be aware, because we always talk about Julian Sane just
needs to do it once or twice, and here you
saw Carson Beck doing it a handful of times. And

(02:55):
it's not just keeping the read but being involved in
a running game.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Yeah, he was. He was involved enough that you kind
of had to like take a note on it that
this is not this is one of these things where
I looked at that and I went, he can run
enough to pick up a first down. He's not running enough.
He's still not running enough even in this the game
where we've seen him running the most that I think
that changes Ohio State's game plan in my mind, I

(03:21):
think Ohio State's game plan is go get after him,
and Miami's game plan, as a result, is probably going
to be get the ball out of Carson Back's hands,
because I don't think Ohio Miami is going to rely
on Ohio State looking at you know, these SMU game
tape and saying, well, really got to be real conservative,
so you don't want to let him get out of
the pocket, like, oh boy, he could he could go

(03:42):
for five yards, he could go for six yards. I
mean literally anything is possible, and you could you could
pick up a first down, you could pick up a
key first down, and that's you know, that's a great
thing to have. This doesn't, to me, though, change the
game plan for Ohio State against Miami. So yeah, I
had I had the same note and one thing that
I think, you know, he didn't have a great game
in this one, Carson Back he had you know, there

(04:04):
were Miami had a couple drops, which you know that
that hurt a lot, but they also had he had
two interceptions and neither of them were really his fault
in this game. That was that This was one thing
that I was kind of wondering about because he had
four interceptions in the Louisville game and then two in
this one, and it's like, oh man, did he just
you know, was he got under pressure? Whatever one of

(04:26):
them was Jojo Trader had the ball in his arms
and just didn't catch it and it deflected right to
a SMU safety. And the other one was in overtime
and Malachay Tony. We talked on the Notre Dame game
rewatch about Malaka Tony doing this great job of flattening
out his route at the goal line and coming back
and getting the ball and not letting the defender get there.

(04:49):
This was exactly that, except the opposite where he kind
of kept going into the end zone and there was
an underneath defender that kind of caught up and undercut
the route and intercepted it. And so neither of those
were really on Carson Beck. One thing that was on
Carson Beck. I have, as viewers may know, coached youth

(05:09):
sports for a long time, and one thing I started
talking to kids about when they were like eight was children,
you need to mind your body language. You need to
not You need to not you know, if someone else
makes a mistake, not get all exasperated, because then that
makes that makes the other child feel bad. Carson Beck,
you need to mind your body language. Like Carson Beck

(05:30):
turns into droopy dog like just you know, Charlie Brown
moping down the sidewalk as soon as something bad happens.
It's it is remarkable that someone has reached his sixth
year of college football and is not able to control
his emotions on the field. But you know, we saw
this in the in the Notre Dame game, there was
a bad snap that threw off the timing of a

(05:51):
play and he looks to the sideline and just goes like, no,
it's a bad snap, so it's not my fault this one.
There were there were a bunch where oh there's a
penalty and he's just oh, oh boy, oh what terrible,
Oh what an idiot? Not my ball. He just you know,
he had there was a holding pedal he threw. That's
a little like temper tan from. There's a drop and

(06:14):
then a false star, then there's another one. He just
it's not great on field leadership, and you can see why.
You know, with Miami, it feels this year like when
things are going well, things are going really well. But
when things start going bad for Miami, you wonder how
well they're going to respond. And I think a lot
of that everything with the offense always starts for the quarterback.

(06:37):
He's the you know, he's the sixth year senior, he's
the captain, he's all that. And when you are like
that on the field and you're showing up your teammates
and you know, this is one of these like real
soft factor things where it's like, well what boy? Things
really spiraled pretty quickly. Why did this spiral really quickly? Well,
because you're doing crap like that and you are old

(06:59):
enough that you should no better.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
You know, looking at the box score before watching the game,
I saw the two interceptions and then you see the
first one how it happens, and as you said, Jojo
trainor just you.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Know, olaid the ball and gave it away.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
And so then as the game is getting closer and closer,
I'm like, oh, this is going to be a painful interception.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
How's it going to happen?

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Because we've seen some bad interceptions thrown and it certainly
was a painful interception. And then immediately after that interception,
SMU I think three runs, three runs in overtime, because
the interception comes in overtime, they run the ball three
times for a touchdown. And it's like once that interception happened,
and it felt like Miami was done and the defense
was done and Smu just ran the ball on them.

(07:40):
But the last thing for me about back, he gets
the ball knocked down at the line, it gets it
tipped around the line of scrimmage a lot, and it's
three or four times in this game. We've seen it
in other games. Just something to keep in mind as
they do get the ball out of the out of
his hands quickly, he gets your hands up and you
may not get to the quarterback, but you can cause

(08:01):
an interception by getting your hands up. It's just a
little surprising because he's not six foot or six', one
Like julian, saying he's he's taller than, that and you
wouldn't expect that as. Much but LIKE smu did a
good job of being prepared for.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
That, yeah that Was that was another thing THAT i
had written, down where you get those balls tipped up
in the air and that turns into an. Interception it
feels like about half the time because it's up in
the air and usually he's thrown hard enough that if
it's going off a, defender a defensive lineman's are you,
know hand or. Arm it's coming pretty fast at that,
point so it's going pretty high in the air and
it's hanging up, there and so that's going to be

(08:39):
something that is definitely definitely somebody watch on both sides
for both, quarterbacks because you, said you, know we've seen
that a little bit With julian saying as. Well one,
thing you, know we should get into the, penalties because
twelve penalties for ninety six yards From, miami and there
were a bunch that were just too, well they're off the.
Field oh, no they're not, now they're not off the.
Field now they've got to go back out, there or you,

(08:59):
know just drive killing holding penalties or fall star. Penalties
it was just the offensive line did not have a
good game in this one at. All this is this
is one where you know the game starts in the, Trenches,
well it did not start well For miami on the
offense in the trenches in this. ONE i think every
player on The miami offensive line had a penalty in this.

(09:20):
Game if not the Center Tommy brockenmeier might not, have
but it was at least all the other four guys he, did,
okay so then, yeah it was all it was all
five GUYS i believe in this one had penalties and
that this is something where this was a little bit
of the narrative going into The TEXAS a AND m
game where they have had all sorts of procedural penalties
and all that kind of. Stuff AND i looked at

(09:42):
that going Into TEXAS a AND m and, went, Well
miami is a better. Team BUT i could, see you,
know it only takes a couple fall, starts holding whatever
delay of game in those big, situations especially with a,
loud hostile, crowd to really derail a, drive and in
a game that was going to be as close is,
that you thought that was a real. Possibility, well they

(10:02):
got it cleaned. Up they did not have those. Issues
really think they had one play of game penalty and
that might have been it in terms of maybe a
false start, once but it really got cleaned up quite
a bit Against TEXAS a AND. M they need to
keep keep that cleaned up this week against Against Ohio
state because they just they can't afford this is The

(10:23):
Ohio state defense is too good to you, know give
put yourself five yards, back ten yards. Back you've got
to make sure that stays cleaned. Up and they you,
Know Mario christoval talked about it a little bit On
monday at his press conference that that's really been kind
of a point of emphasis for, them and it seems
like they have gotten it cleaned, up but you, know

(10:44):
this is Bad miami is still in. There this is
this is a little bit of A jeckyll And hyde,
team and Bad miami is still potentially in, there and you,
know they just have to really make sure that particularly
very particular version of Bad miami doesn't come, out because
if it, does then that can lead into The carson

(11:04):
back THING i just talked, about and then you, know
and that's when things can be really.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Spiral, yeah we did see several some false starts in
there and some holding calls in, there and you had
a couple From France SmaI, noah the right, tackle you
had two holding. CALLS i think maybe the second one
was kind of. Weak you had left Tackle mark Hal
bell with some false starts the. Center as you mentioned

(11:30):
the snap in. Fraction this was the first time where
you looked at The miami offensive line and you're, like,
WELL i, OKAY i can see some areas For Ohio
state because they've been very solid AND i don't, know
THE smu has this dynamic defensive line that would cause
all of these. Issues so that was the first time

(11:53):
where you, know we've watched. Them now what four GAMES
i think over over the course of the seasons where.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
It's LIKE.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
I see some cracks OR i see some some things
where it doesn't feel like it's just going to be a.
STALEMATE i see some. Opportunities, now a huge portion of
this time is who is calling this, game because WHAT
acc refs c is Holding big ten, REFS cee.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Is that's just. Football there's what are you talking? About
what's a?

Speaker 1 (12:20):
Hold SO i don't believe this is going to Be
big ten refs in The Cotton. Bowl but if you
can GET acc refs that like to call, hold may
not go well For Ohio state's offensive line. Either BUT
i was the holds that were called in this game
would not be called in A big ten. Game so
it'll be interesting to see how those two things coexist

(12:44):
when the doing the refs, finally you, know when this
game finally gets. Underway so, YEAH i just thought there
was some interesting opportunities for The Ohio state defensive line
moving forward in this.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
One.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
Anything, well the, offense we've talked about the passing, game
in the pass AND. Cj daniels was not in this.
Game that's Why Jojo trader was targeted as much as
he was fenced with five for eighty one and a.
Touchdown look good other than that. Interception Malachy tony nine
for seventy and one of the things THAT, i you,

(13:20):
KNOW i wrote down in this one was they want
to Get Malakay tony the ball a. Bunch it doesn't
seem like they always have good ways of doing. It
they just let's just throw it to him and then
hope somebody. Blocks we'll have blockers out, there but it
might it's just gonna be a wide receiver trying to
block two guys or, whatever and you know you Will
malachi will certainly he'll make somebody. Miss and it's, like,

(13:40):
well he's waiting for the ball and he's being tackled
as the ball is getting. THERE i felt like in
this game they could have done a better job of
utilizing him and getting him, well just get him in.
Space it's not that easy because defenses are spread out
all over the place now and they are comfortable in.
Space it was just you, know you throw him and

(14:00):
then he'll all get five or six yards if he's
not tackled in the backfield because the defense.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
Is right there waiting for.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
Him and there are a couple where just a swing
pass out there and there's two defenders tackling. Him it's,
like how can this be a good?

Speaker 3 (14:11):
Play? Yeah they move him around a, lot like they,
Did Ohios date did With Ted ginn twenty years, ago
where you remember the shot gin formation where he would
be sort of next to the quarterback but like six yards,
out but he was you, know also four yards behind
the line of. Scrimmage he saw that a couple times
With tony in This it's, like, MAN i haven't seen
that very often, Recently so like they're very truly clearly

(14:34):
trying to find different ways to get him the. Ball you,
KNOW i wonder how much they can have saved up
for this game where you, know you would assume in
a game like they just had where it was do or,
die win this game or go, home you probably burned
through a lot of your different creative ideas in terms
of how to get him the ball in a game

(14:55):
where it's you, know it's three three for most of
the second half and, nothing nothing for most of the you,
know for the entire first. HALF i would. Assume you,
know they have certainly shown a lot of different stuff
with him where they've run him as a quarterback and
they will hand him the ball and they'll throw him the,
ball and on this one it was just kind of
like a little tap pass in. Motion you, know they

(15:16):
will find ways to get him the. Ball but it
feels like you've probably put just about everything on film
at this, point which will you know that lims limits the,
creativity you can still continue to. Show one thing THAT
i did want to mention before we switch to the
defense Is Mark fletcher had another really good. Day it
was sixteen carries eighty four yards five point three yards

(15:38):
per carry on along of just fourteen and this was
this was an impressive one because SMU's defense is thirteenth
in the nation and yards per carry allowed just over.
Three so they're similar To Ohio. State you're Behind Ohio,
state they're Behind, miami but they're they're in that kind of.
Neighborhood so five point three yards per carry For Mark
fletcher was really, impressive especially the way he got there

(16:00):
because you, know we talk about this all the, time
where you could have ten carries for seventy yards and
one of them is a sixty yarder and then there's
a whole bunch of ones and twos in. There that
was not the case For. Fletcher it was seven eight
three eleven five four three four seven fourteen loss of
one seven two five two. THREE i, mean that's that's

(16:25):
probably about fifty percent or. Better you're you're kind of
staying on, schedule like your your success rate is probably
about fifty. Percent that's pretty good on the on the,
run and you know he got obviously it was a
little less successful later on in the. GAME i JUST
i kept looking at they're rotating different backs in, there
and it was, like you should, probably you, know unless
he was not you, know can't hold up for twenty five,

(16:49):
carries which is certainly. Possible that's how a lot of teams.
Are it was, like, boy they, should they should give
him the ball more Because Marty brown was four point
one Yards, cary which isn't. Bad Jordan lyle three point,
three and he's obviously banged. Up he's he's going to miss,
uh you, know he's not going to be there for this,
game so he doesn't really isn't really relevant to this

(17:10):
conversation moving, Forward BUT i JUST i keep looking At
Mark fletcher and, thinking you, know if they can find running.
LANE i think it's going to be harder to find running,
lanes especially, inside which is Where Mark fletcher likes to.
Run he runs between the tackles a. LOT i think
it's going to be a challenge For miami to find
a lot of running space. There and so then you,

(17:34):
know then you've got to bounce it out and The
Ohio state is probably going to try and make, him you,
know spill and kill is the. Term you you, block
you clog up the, middle the middle, right you know,
gaps and you try and bounce, him force the running
back to bounce it, outside and then you clean it
up with the. Linebackers that's probably What Ohio state's going
to be trying to. Do i'll be interested to see

(17:54):
how Well Mark fletcher can run it between the, tackles
because that's ONE i was, thinking where if he can
run even you, know he need to run for five seven.
Yards agree if he can run for four yards of
carry and do it between the tackles, consistently that's that's
an enormous win For. MIAMI i just you, Know i'll
be fascinated to see whether they can do.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
It you.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
Know one of my notes here is That Ohio state
may need two, linebackers but we know that they still
like to play their five man front with R Vel
reese being one of those five. Men but the second
linebacker in the situation Is Caleb downs, basically and we
Know Sunny styles will be attached and Watching Mark fletcher
the entire, time and we'll probably have between eight and

(18:34):
twelve tackles just On On fletcher as he did Against.
Indiana but, Again Ohio state lost that. GAME i don't
know if everybody remembers that. One Sunny styles was there
to clean up the running game the entire, time but they.
Didn't Ohio state didn't score enough. Points AND i was
talking with AN nfl guy About Mark fletcher and he's, like,
yeah you, know.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Just doesn't really do much for.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
Me and it's, like, yeah because you're AN nfl, person
you want to see like this next want he. Does
he doesn't remind me Of Saquon, bark but, yeah, No.
Dubt what he does is he's just like an effective
city bus and just keeps, everybody keeps the entire city on.
Schedule and he's not doing forty five Down High. Street
he's just doing you thirty and hitting all the stops

(19:17):
and everybody's getting on and. Off he's very efficient and
he's it's like when you know you don't hear any
offensive lineman's, names it's because they're doing their. Job Mark
fletcher's just doing his, job keeping the offense. Going and
it may never be, flashy but then you, know it
was Against TEXAS a AND m and it's, Like, wow
this guy and they just he just keeps churning. Along

(19:38):
and when you, watch when you're watching these, THINGS i
like that stuff kind of just sticks out where that's
a guy that they can lean. On and you need
as many of those guys as you.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
Can in the. Playoffs and he to, me.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
He will lead them in touches, obviously but everybody may
be talking About Carson beck and Malck i tell he's
the guy that would lead them as far as they
can go this.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
Year, yeah if they can run the, ball that that
opened so much stuff up For Malachai toni in the
passing game and For carson back in the passing. Game
you've got to be able to run ball because if
you get predictable and you're you you know AND i
think some of this goes into If miami falls behind
early and then can't run the, Ball that's WHERE i
could see this really spiraling for. Them they've got to

(20:25):
be able to just sort of if they can just
sort of keep with the opponent and keep the running
game of, factor then you can THEN i think this
offense really can stay on. SCHEDULE i don't Think miami
can be one dimensional and throw just throwing the ball
and win the. GAME i think they're gonna have to
run the ball in order to win the. Game one
area THAT i did write down that was a little
bit of a concern in terms of the run game

(20:46):
For miami in this one was short yardagep leccher got
stuffed on fourth and one. Once there was ANOTHER i
think it was a third down and one where he
got stuffed and then there was an offensive lineman who
just like shoved, him you, know came up behind and
like shoved him over the over the line, basically but
he got you, know got stuff there on that one as.
Well Marty brown got stuff done a third and one

(21:07):
at one. Point that's you, KNOW i, mean this Is
Ohio state fans have been watching this all year Where
Ohio state has struggled in short yardage and struggled in
the red. Zone you've got to be able to convert
your third and, ones AND i, WAS i was a little.
SURPRISED i don't think we Saw carson Beck on any
sneaks in this, one you, KNOW i can't AND i
really don't know THAT i remember seeing him sneaking much this,

(21:31):
year and we've watched at this point most of their biggest,
games so you, know maybe he's just not comfortable with.
That maybe that's something of. It just try to. SAVE
i don't, know but you, know if if you are
in fourth and, one third and one and you don't,
convert that that's potentially a game changing. Play Where Ohio
state lost The Big ten championship game because they had

(21:52):
a couple third and, shorts fourth and shorts in the
red zone that they didn't, convert and one you, know
one of them was a fourth down where the quarterbacks
need just went. Down you, know he just basically slipped
and his knee went. Down if you, miss if you
don't convert those one or two, plays that can swing the.
Game SO i think that's that's certainly an area that
is a concern because you, know no disrespect TO, smu

(22:14):
but the injury of The Ohio state defensive line is
better than SMU's. Interior the defensive Line kate McDonald is
going to be in the first. ROUND i could, not
off the top of my head tell you either of
SMU's defensive tackles in this. Game so, YEAH i that
to me would be a little bit of a. Concern,
again this is the offensive line has played better than
this in all the other games we've, Seen so maybe
this was just a bad game or a bad matchup

(22:36):
for some. Reason but that's SOMETHING i would keep an eye.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
On, Yes and so let's talk about the defensive side
of the.

Speaker 1 (22:44):
Ball and the first GUY i want to talk about
IS i think one of the first guys we've talked
about the last, time and that's nickel Back Keiante scott number,
zero who in this game eight, tackles two tackles for the,
loss and a sack of fumble, recovery broke up a
hurried the. Quarterback the last time he watched him Against Notre.
Dame the first play of the, game he's blitzing off

(23:05):
the edge and causing. Havoc and he's one of my
favorite players that we've watched that we've seen in doing,
this and he. Is he's, everywhere and it's a little
bit Like Caleb downs where you need to know where
he's going to. Be but he's effective as a run,
stopper he's effective as a pass. Defender he, is he's an.
Attacker he can.

Speaker 2 (23:25):
Do whatever you.

Speaker 1 (23:27):
Need and when you look at his season this, year
like he's got thirteen twelve f thirteen tackles for, loss
he's got five or six sacks and, again, Nickelback, okay
so this is Their lorenzo, styles this is Their Jordan.
Hancock and the way they use him is, well he's
part time outside linebacking pass, rusher and then he's also

(23:49):
part time actual covering the, slot and you don't, know.

Speaker 2 (23:53):
You don't know his.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
Hours, basically you don't know which which part time is this,
job which part time is that. Job and that's part
of the fun with watching, him because, yeah thirteen tackles
for loss on the, season which is second behind A
Keeen messador is thirteen and a, half is one one
and a half more tackles for loss Than Ruben. Bain
this is your nickel back, again he has five sacks
on the. Season Ruben bain has seven and a, half

(24:14):
a keen messador the other defensive end eight and a.

Speaker 2 (24:17):
Half he's just he can do.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
Whatever and he's one of those guys That julian's saying
is gonna have to know where he's at before the.
Snap you're also gonna want to know where he is
after the snap because they'll do some blind side blitzing with,
him and he is effective at.

Speaker 3 (24:32):
That, yeah he is definitely someone you gotta really watch
in terms of pass rush because you, know if you're the,
nickel you're you're the inside, guy so you're not blitzing
an outside corner a guy from the numbers or something
like he's coming from you, know he may be coming
from just outside the hash if you're on one, hashmark
he may be coming from just inside the. Hash on
the other, side that is a quick you, know that

(24:52):
is a relatively quick. Rush and if your tackles are
mostly worried about the defensive ends For miami as well
they should, be then that can create a real concern because,
okay now now your tackle's tied up with the defensive
end and here comes a guy from. Outside is your
running back on the correct side of the. Formation is
your tight end on the correct side of the? Formation
is your tight end worried about chipping Ruben? Bain and
then here comes the guy out off the. Slot it

(25:15):
could also potentially if you are kind of watching him
for a half, second does that potentially tie up you,
know does that potentially screw up your tackle or your
tight end or whoever who's supposed to be helping on that.
Side does that delay them getting to messidor Or baine
or something like. That so that's one of those things
where he's the way they use him makes him someone
who could really have an impact without him actually being

(25:37):
the guy who's. Blitzing we talk about this with Rvel
reese a bunch where the opposing offenses are finding Rvel
reese and is, like, okay where is? He, okay we've
got to make sure he's not, coming and he's. Not
he has not been. Coming, recently they've been doing a
lot of, him just sort of caging and spying and
making sure the opposing quarterback can't. Run but you still
have to account for, him which takes a guy away

(25:59):
from someone. Else that's a that's a definitely a good shout.
THERE i think we should probably let's say'm, oh let's talk,
tempo BECAUSE smu USED smu used tempo in this game reasonably.
Effectively it was, not you, know this is to be.
Clear when they used, tempo they went. Fast there was

(26:21):
they put a clock up on the screen at one,
point and it was from the time the guy got
tackled till the time they snapped the ball in the
next play was thirteen seconds like it. Was it was
not you, know they ran thirteen seconds off the play. Clock,
no it was the guy gets, tackled then they're running
the ball over and then they're gonna spot it and
then they're gonna start the play. Clock they they snapped
the ball with thirty second thirty one seconds on the
play clock a. Lot, now it wasn't all the. Time

(26:44):
it was, generally you, know this is the way a
lot of teams use. Tempo you have a successful play
and then, boom you use. Tempo you, okay you just
hit him for. One now you run up to the
line and you hit something else because now they're a little,
bit you, know a little bit out of. Sorts you
just gave up a, bit you, know gave up a nice.
That you, know it doesn't have to be a fifty yard.
Pass it can Be, hey you get you had a
seven yard. Run, okay boom hustled at the. Line, well,

(27:06):
sorry not a run in this. Game we'll get To
SMU's lack of a run game in a. Bit but
a seven yard, pass a nine yard pass and then
boom you hustle the. Line it Got miami's defensive line
a little. Bit it felt like they got a little
winded at, times which you, know this is this is
a normal thing for defensive. Lines but this is the
flip side of something we talked about on The Miami.

(27:27):
Show where you get guys Like Justin, scott the defensive
tackle making a tackle way out by the you, know
out by the. Numbers you Get Ruben daine making an
interception all the way over by the. Sideline these are
guys who are very. Active they're all over the. Field
that's you, know that's. Great that means they're very dangerous.
Players it also means that's a lot of running for
a guy carrying three hundred and something pounds on his.

(27:47):
Frame so you can tire them out with selective use of.
TEMPO i am expecting to See Ohio state do that
a little bit in this, game in this kind of
circumstances where they have been, very very deliberate with their
pace all. Season now it's you know now and that's
sort of managing snaps and all that kind of. Stuff

(28:08):
this is a time where, okay now it's time to
hit the gas. PEDAL i would look For Ohio state
to do, that you, know at least in the way
THAT smu. Did you, know not all the, time but
you just do it. Selectively you catch, them you, know
catch them in a spot they. Had they had a
quick change thing after an interception and you, know you're
not Running temple in the first play of a. Drive
but they scored a touchdown on the first play of

(28:29):
a drive right after the, interception the one that went
off Of Jojo trader's.

Speaker 1 (28:33):
Hands you, Know i'm watching this and trying to let
into this, game wanting to SEE smu because they threw
for three hundred and sixty five yards and it's, like, well,
okay Well High state likes to throw the.

Speaker 2 (28:44):
Ball how does this.

Speaker 1 (28:46):
Compare maybe The miami secondary has been exposed and you
didn't really see. Much there's a couple of downfield. Shots
but what we saw this was a lot of quick,
stuff quick screens and just rollouts and scrambles that don't
necessarily apply to The Ohio state passing. Game but you're,
right the tempo is something that we could. See AND
i just wonder it's one of those things where Say Ohio,

(29:08):
state they're they're gonna have like a thirteen play. Drive
say it that's and after about five or six, plays
then if you, start if you turn it on then
and you trap who's ever out there after five or six,
plays then you've got. Something or do you wait for
them to sub Out Reuben bain Or Key, mesador bring
in The marquise Lightf foot or somebody, else then it's, like,
okay now we're gonna trap that guy on there so

(29:30):
that we're not dealing With mesador Or. Baine and you,
know how how how like advanced are they in terms
of when this? Happens this is when we will go?
Tempo or is IT i wonder if it's just the
feel or is this now we're looking for a certain,
circuit certain, circumstance and after five plays then we kick

(29:52):
it in and we make sure that they do to
get tired because they don't substitute a lot on the defensive,
line so they'll get, thinking get worn down over the
course of a long, drift like any defensive line that isn't.
Substituting so there are. OPPORTUNITIES i don't know that we're
going to see the. TEMPLE i know we're not going
to see the temple LIKE smu was doing because they

(30:12):
were snapping the. Ball you, know the microphone is still
going inside the helmets basically as the ball is you,
know being snapped because it's twenty, five LIKE i, said
thirty seconds on the play, clock and that the communications
are on until fifteen seconds are are left in the play,
clock and they were snapping.

Speaker 2 (30:28):
It well before.

Speaker 1 (30:30):
Then when we watch these games time we're looking for
fish who's getting, Attacked and in this game that Was Jacoby,
thomas a strong.

Speaker 2 (30:38):
Safety sure we're.

Speaker 1 (30:40):
Attacking they were attacking him, downfield he got A, pi
he got beat deep and basically, yeah no. Dubt and
in a defense where you got two, corners a very
talented nickel and talented free safeties That miami, does and
then you know that also talented strong.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
Safety the strong safety is generally.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Your worst coverage guy in this whole, thing or you're
the best guy to. Attack so, yes they they went after.
Him they went after him, Successfully and when you're watching,
this it's, like, well, okay, now how does that apply
To Ohio. State, Well Ohio state can scheme up some
things to find that sort of matchup and if there's
somebody that can be, attacked Then Ohio state will we'll

(31:20):
go after. That and watching this, one we know they're
not afraid of, quarterbacks but this was something THAT smu
was brazenly and they decided early on and before the
game clearly we're gonna attack number eight and they're gonna
feel pretty good about what's gonna happen when they.

Speaker 2 (31:39):
Do.

Speaker 3 (31:40):
Yeah thomas is a fifty year senior and he started
his career At tennessee and then went To Middle tennessee
and then now is At. Miami and he got beat
a couple different. Ways one of them was a double
move WHERE Smu this is SOMETHING i Think Ohio state
maybe can can potentially set. Up sometimes you can create
matchups with formation and What smu did on the one

(32:01):
that was a it was a double move where he
got beat. Deep it was an inside receiver in a
trip's formation so you can you, know the opposing teams
are gonna have rules unless they're going to have you, know,
hey this outside corner is going to Follow Carnel tait
wherever he, goes Or Jeremiah smith wherever he. Goes you
can slot. In you, know we've seen them Use Jeremiah

(32:22):
smith in the slot a. Bunch that's something they did
in The Rose bowl last year and created some advantageous.
Matchups you could see them potentially do something like that
where you can use formation to set up some. Matchups
the other thing that he got beat on there was
a touchdown that he gave up where he got caught
looking inside and the receiver ended up just going right

(32:44):
by him And Mohammad torrey had won number. One the
linebacker he got caught looking in the backfield and got
beat on a wheel. Route that feels like you, know
and this is this is a AN smu team that
is not running the ball at. ALL i mean at
and WHEN i say not running the ball at, ALL
i mean they finished the regulation with minus two yards.

(33:06):
Rushing the running their running, back they're leading running back
in the, game had three carries in. Regulation like this
is a team that like forgot that running the football
was a thing and then ended up running in the in.
Overtime he had eight carries in the, game five of
them came in the one overtime. Period they finished with
twenty three yards rushing and they had twenty five of
those in. Overtime so this was like not at, all

(33:28):
not even a little, bit a team that was running
the ball And miami defenders kept getting caught with their
eyes in the. Backfield and so If Ohio state can
run the, ball and again we're talking the NUMBERS i
was talking about With Mark. Pletcher if Bo jackson can
average four yards four yards and some change per, carry
that could potentially set some stuff up if the eye

(33:48):
discipline isn't great with the with some of the guys
in the back seven For. Miami that's something that you're
gonna want to keep an eye on because If Ohio
state can run the, ball that potentially opens up a
lot of stuff in addition to the formation STUFF i
just talked about in the passing. Game and, again this
is the same you, know this is the same thing
that we've talked about With, miami And miami can run the, ball,

(34:09):
boy does that help the passing. GAME i don't think
you're going to win this game by being one, Dimensional
BUT i don't know which of these TEAMS i believe.
In more like getting to four and a half yards of.

Speaker 1 (34:18):
Carry, yeah that feels like it's going to require a
forty two yard run in there somewhere to hit that.
Number last thing for, me in terms of the past,
defense we saw Corners ethan, O'Connor number twenty four got beaten,
DOWNFIELD Oj frederic number, Six, no not number, six but number,

(34:42):
Six Xavier LUCAS i think got beaten on a back.
Shoulder and this, ONE i still like their secondary from
what we've seen of. It but they had one guy
they won, after kind of Like indiana had one guy
they won after Against Ohio state AND i Was Lorenzo Styles.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
Junior there was a difference in the. Game and when you,
know when.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
We're talking About vegas season is nine and a half.
WHATEVER i Know miami fans see at nine and a
half the other. Way but when it's if there's a
week link and you can attack and it can be
the difference in the. Game just keep an eye on that.
One but that's All i've got other than some of
the special teams was.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
Wow some of the special teams was extremely go acc
in this, one it was a mess and one thing
that we. Had let's start with a. Positive this was
the best punt THAT i have seen out Of miami's
punter all, season and probably was the best punt For
miami's punter all. Season he had a seventy three yarder
That miami had two guys in positions down at the

(35:40):
one yard line and could not down. It it was,
LIKE i DON'T i don't like do the legitimate face
palm very often As i'm watching these. Games it was
like there were two of, you and one of the
guys is, like dive the ball slowed down and the
guys like diving for the ball at the, three like,
no just run around the ball and, stop and he
like doesn't down, it kicks it towards the end. Zone

(36:04):
the other guy is trying to knock it in and
then ends up kicking it not far. Enough it was
it was just, like what what are we doing? Here
it was it was a little bit of a. Mess
they gave up a long kick return right up the.
Gut that was that was a little. Bit you, know
we haven't seen that other. Times but it wasn't you,

(36:24):
know this wasn't a you, know we're going to do
The Music city mirraorcle and we're going to throw back
across the. Field that's a trick. Play was just, Like,
nope the trick play is we're going to return this
kick and we're going to return it right up the.
Gut and that was you, know that's a little bit
of a. Concern you, KNOW Smu Special, teams this is
not AN smu, show BUT. Smu oh one more On miami,

(36:44):
Side Keilan marrion raced over to the sideline to feel
the kickoff and caught it just as he was stepping
out of bounds at like the nine yard, line which
all you have to do is let that ball drop
and it's gonna go out of bounds and you're gonna
get it at the thirty five instead of the. Nine
but just not great awareness. THERE i do want to
shout out, though that was not the worst kick return
decision of the. Day shout out to THE smu guy

(37:06):
who fielded a kickoff nine yards deep in the end
zone and then ran it out and got it to
like the, Twelve like all you have to do is
just take one step to your left and let that
ball sail over your head and out the back of
the end zone and you're at the twenty. FIVE i,
MAN I i would have like if there was a,
CHALKBOARD i would have broken the chalkboard in the room

(37:27):
with me just punching my fist through. It watching these
teams play special, teams it. Was it was. REMARKABLE i
don't know that there's any big takeaways, there, although, oh
other than don't punt the ball in MALACHAY toni.

Speaker 1 (37:43):
Right, Yes so he had a forty seven yarder in
this one, again AND i think they were talking on
in the, game like the coach is mad about them
punting to, him like stop punting to, him and then
they punt to him again and it's like forty seven
yarder at the end of the half to put them
in scoring. Position but, yeah downing that KICK i was
like watching Mister bean try to down a kickoff and

(38:06):
just you can hear just the stupid music going on as,
well and it's, like oh this guy this oh he's so,
unfortunate so. Hilarious but this was the first top ten
winnohole FOR smu since nineteen seventy. Four so congratulations to
The mustangs On. Wow moving on up to THE acc

(38:27):
go Acc. Tom anything else from this game that you
want to touch, ON i think we've covered it pretty pretty.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
Well we have in much more detail THAN i expected.
To but the only other, thing and this is going
to be the second ted gin shout out on this,
one the reason they punted it To tony right before
halftime Was miami put a second punk returner back the
way That Ohio state used to With Santonio holmes and ted,
ginns so you couldn't just kick it one direction and

(38:52):
kick it away from. Someone so you, know that's SOMETHING
i wouldn't be surprised if you Saw miami try that
in this. Game it just depends On that's probably just
a little bit of how concerned are they With Ohio
states potentially faking a, punt because then you run into
numbers issues if you do. That but you know the
balance between how badly do you want them to punt

(39:15):
the ball To Malachai tony versus how concerned are you
with you, know a potential fake from The Ohio state special.

Speaker 1 (39:21):
Teams, yeah and again this is a game That miami
should have, won but they committed a penalty to GIVE
smu a first down late in the game that allowed
them to go down and tie the game and send
it to. Overtime and this was not the. Same this
is a much more disciplined team that we saw Against
TEXAS a AND M and we would assume we're going

(39:42):
to see a disciplined team gets To Ohio, state BUT
i don't. Know it's gonna be chippy both. Ways according
To Jeremiah, smith it'll be fun to watch see how those,
goes but the more composed team will probably win. It
so just keep that in. Mind so that will do.
IT i want to thank you all for tuning into
that thumbs up if you know you've done. It if
you're watching on, YouTube we are going to try to knock.

(40:03):
Out we will knock out A Miami fans Listener questions.
Show if you've got some listener questions or a viewer,
questions go ahead and throw me in the comments and.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
We'll grab those and discuss those.

Speaker 1 (40:15):
Once we maybe once we get To dallas and we're
ready to do all, that and we will be getting
there and just just a day or so and looking
forward to being there as, Well so that will do.
It from here again five star writing review on the
podcast is always appreciate it as, Well so thank you
all for tuning in and we'll talk to you all

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
