This edition of the Coast Highway Shuffle finds us paying tribute, sadly, to the late Sixto Rorriguez on the occasion of his death.
It also features the expected lineup of great songs by artists like: Wings, Steely Dan, Dire Straits, Loudon Wainwright III, Tom Petty, Peter Frampton, The Meadows, Ziggy Marley and many more!

And, the second hour of this show features the DJ debut of Mr. Brian Hurley! Brian is my co-host on our Thursday 8am to 10am show, "Shades of Grey", but today he takes full reign of the controls at the station for a solo flight! Great job, Brian, and good luck as you 'fly' to great heights in the future!

Have a great week, everyone, and if you can, please take the time donate to a cause that helps our friends in Lahaina, Maui!

An lp get in a Galle Beachmember supported k x FM on one oh
four point seven k XFM radio dotOrg. This disclaimer is a statement notifying
listening audiences that any opinions expressed inour shows are not representative of Laguna Radio,
Inc. It's management or its boardof directors. Ah, good morning,

(00:57):
Laguna Beach. It's Sunday morning atten am, and that means it's
time for another edition of the CoastHighway Shuffle Show. Eagle eared listeners will
recognize that in the background we havea little Peter Frampton playing. Yes,
that's Peter Frampton and he's playing alittle gypsy music here this morning for us.

(01:19):
The only reason I've done that isbecause this Wednesday I will be up
in Santa Barbara watching Peter Frampton playlive at the Arlington Theater. Really excited
about that, so I thought i'dstart today's show off with a little Peter
Frampton. I hope you've all hada great week. Before we start this
show and our first cut with asong by Dire Straits, I wanted to

(01:44):
just touch base on a particularly sadevent that, of course we are all
aware of, and that is thetragedy that has happened in Lahina this past
week. The death tolls now upto ninety. It's inconceivable that's such a
beautiful play as Lahinah, in sucha beautiful island like Maui, could be

(02:04):
as devastated as it is. Ihave friends that have places over there.
A couple of them have kids thatare living over there. I've been able
to make some contact with them, but them trying to give them their space
as they deal with their own versionof this tragedy. So I'll simply say
today that Laguna Beach, California, all of us are with our friends and

(02:29):
family over in Maui, over inLahainah, and we can only send our
love, our prayers, but alsoour money. I've made a couple of
donations. You will find organizations thatare there to help and are reputable,
and I encourage you to make adonation. Money talks, and in times

(02:53):
of tragedy, whether it's Ukraine, whether it's MAUI ride a check and share
some of your good fortune and yourability to step up with those in need.
All right, that is my publicservice announcement today regarding Lahinah. Let's
get back to the music here. The first song We're gonna play. It's

(03:16):
a great cut off the original DireStraits album. This is appropriately for the
Coast Highway Shuffle as we look southboundalong the Highway. This is a song
called south Bound Again by Dire Straitshere on the Coast Highway Shuffle show,

(03:50):
Southbound Again, all about again, don't do fin, I'm gonna leave it
al boys about the movie seem likeBoys by Rule stole it single time,

(04:28):
Oh river Time, every single time, Rule across moving river Time. Look
at the sable feelings every time I'mmoving. I'm life so sound again.

(05:46):
Last night a fella, r Idon't bound again. That'st night a fella.
I try fine out. I'm sickit in keep time Southbound again indeed

(06:38):
here on k x FM. Thenext song I'm gonna play for you here
this morning is a song by Loudand Wainwright, and it's a song called
gray in La. This is offhis Strange Weirdos album. You're listening to
the Coast Highway Shuffle Show here onk x f M. When it's Gray

(07:18):
in La, I sure like itthat way. This is way too much
sunshine around here. I don't knowabout you. I get so sick of
blue skies wherever they always appear, and a shore love the sound of the

(07:39):
rain pouring down on my cardboard roofmade out of tear. If there's a
flood, it's gonna be bu slides. We all have to pay for our
sins, and I supposed to clothes. Can your way to the free ways

(08:01):
a long start to blog and nowaters, no rise, and you all
be surprised when your whole house tweelslike you're a dog, and it's great
lay, it's much better than thatway. It reminds you that this town's
so quel. It may feel likefunning and smart sunglasses, but really it

(08:28):
was just one more food. AndI'm just to jump. This whole town's

(08:54):
a dump. We came out hereto dump all our dreams. I'm making
the right, but we're stuck inthe single night man, that's just to
see And the suppose Horry Dave andyour nose, all those cars we drive

(09:16):
heat a bar and see ten featuresrise in those constant blue skies and brush
fires. Can your curb your frothrid grazing night. Your care should say,
there's no place it's better I knowfor wanna be star stuck in a

(09:41):
car on a free weaven. No, when I go on screen, you're
like it that way because we're toomuch sunshine on. I don't know about
you. I get so buy allright. That's a beautiful song there by

(10:13):
loud and waynewright. The third againcalled gray in La. Now, if
it was gray in La, there'sa good chance that it could be gray
here. But it's not. It'sbeautiful and sunny and Laguna Beach. And
so we're gonna play the next songby Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers,
one of my favorite songs there isoff. It's the title track off the

(10:33):
One Bright Day album. This isZiggy Marley and One Bright Day because,
frankly, in Laguna Beach, ifit's not overcast, it is a very
beautiful bright day right day for onebright day feeling. That's really one one

(11:15):
got to be one one one,one bright dad. He be got to
get on one bright day. Hegot to get on one bright day.

(11:35):
He be like to get on rightday, one bright dad. Heple got
to get one right. There willthe celebrations around the liston Love without Hair,
there will be singing then this singinglive without that fair one bright head.

(11:58):
He will not to get off.One black he got to get off.
Yes, it was one right there, one right, yes, it
is one right there right there ismusic. He choosing, slopping, bluffing

(12:26):
here this music no loses and stopping, stopping, one black days. He
got to get off one black. He got to get one. Want to
see the one right there right, believe me, one bright gear, a

(12:52):
blue street, one train. Therewas sunshine on the full night. One
to watch the wind and then enjoy, said the lord. And this one
was watching brood. One bright day. He got together on one bright gay.

(13:16):
People got together on one bright onedo the bright one bright rood,
scream on tree, bringing to theone bright, I said it. Scruggle

(13:37):
to the one right hand. Hestruggled to the one right, Struggle to
the one right day, Make itto the two right hand, make it
to the We forgot to get off. People got to get on. So

(14:11):
they got me any minute years andhearth down something books and yes, spool,

(14:52):
all right, that is Ziggy Marley, the Great Ziggy Marley here on
k x f M. All right, we're gonna keep the music going here.
I've got a guest in my studiotoday the amazing Brian Hurley, And
right now Brian is not on Mikebecause we're just doing some stuff together and
getting all good with it, andwe're probably going to have Brian joined the

(15:13):
show live here in the second hour, so look forward to that. Brian,
as you know, is a cohost with me on a Thursday morning
show called Shades of Gray that wehave every Thursday from eight to ten am,
and he'll be joining us here ina little while. But until then,
man, it's all about the music. And you know, I go
back. One of my favorite artistsall time lost him in twenty seventeen is

(15:39):
the great Tom Petty, and I'vespoken effusively about him for the last number
of years and I will continue todo so. But he has a live
anthology out. It's been out forquite some time, and anytime I want
to hear some good live Tom Petty, go to that. I go to

(16:00):
that multidisc album and pick one kindof at random because they're all fantastic.
And the one I've picked for younow here on the Coast Highway Shuffle Show
is a great cut called night Watchman. You know this song, but it's
always good to hear a great liveversion here for you now from your friends

(16:21):
at k x FM. This isTom Petty and the Heartbreakers live night Watchman
here on k x FM. Ilike to watch me around watching Gonta give

(17:18):
my norse to the ground, listenjoy got potential that be just watching you,
didn't think about the pros and cars. Prisoner he would watch you.

(17:48):
I am succured, say I'm noteven watch house, just a yard.

(18:11):
You live in your wild and leta swell. He got to wed at
side swears more. The night washer, my lad ground night washer, got

(19:22):
my nose to the ground. Iright to watch light washred, I say

(19:44):
to the night watch a ride, watch light and watch. I'll say it

(21:03):
all right. Oh goodness, goodness, that's skipped right ahead of me.
There you heard that little snare tapor maybe that was a high hat tap.
In other words, we're ready togo with our next song here.
That is Boated Safa off the Gratecount Down to Ecstasy album Steely Dan here
on k x FM. What isSuddle? Which take men by a head?

(22:21):
Who is super which take men bya head? Chin to show me
the Shining yard Japan? Spark tolard your China? Can you show me.
What is souther? What is sunthererI'm gonna sell my heart to town?
What is super? I'm gonna sellmy house to town? And don't

(22:42):
be that shine yard Japan sparkling yourChina. You don't mean that? What
is upper? What is upper? For the suckle which take their bot ahead?

(24:52):
For the shuckle, which take theirbot ahead? Get the shoe me

souper, for this supper. I'mon south hoy down. What is supper?
I'm on south down, And don'tbe that shining down the plan start

(25:17):
to your China. Just I'll bethat. What is supper? What is
soupper? What is soupper? Whatis souther? What is southur? What
is souper? What is souper? What is south of down? All right?

(26:33):
Always good to have a little steelyDan on the docket here on a
Sunday morning, as you know listeningto this station. At the bottom of
every hour, at the half hourmark, we'd like to give you a
little update on local information, andthere's always a lot to talk about.
Let me point out first that ourweather is a beautiful seventy one degrees.
If you've come here from somewhere hotand muggy, guess what we got to

(26:59):
give for you. It's seventy onedegrees today and it's only going to get
as high as seventy two degrees now. If you're inclined, you can head
out and maybe check out the surf. There's not a lot of surf right
now, only one to two feetat Thalus Street, one to two feet
at Agate. But it is niceand warm, seventy three degrees in the
water and always worth getting wet dippingoff. I went surfing yesterday down at

(27:25):
Trails, and I'm exhausted. Igotta say the older I get, the
more of a toll surfing takes onthis body. But it was great to
be out in the water and justso fortunate to be out here in southern
California enjoying what the ocean has tooffer us. I'd also like to remind
you that today, August thirteen,is going to be the second to last

(27:52):
Sunday for Music in the Park. This, of course, is the free
public concert series held Sunday evenings atBluebird Park. It starts at five pm
and today always Adell obviously in aDell tribute is the band playing. So
you guys know how popular this is. It always it doesn't sell out because

(28:14):
it's free, but it gets reallycrowded. So if you want to see
Always Adell, obviously they got afemale singer who's got great pipes. You
want to be there by five o'clock. Now, you cannot set up before
three o'clock. So get in yourcrouch, get in your starting gun positions
at three o'clock and run into theparkway there on Bluebird Canyon Road and enjoy

(28:41):
a great evening of music tonight. There's gonna be another band next week.
We don't yet have the information onwhat that band will be, but there
will be one more final concert inthe park, Music in the Park Sundays
coming up on coming up at BluebirdPark. And because everything else that we

(29:06):
have happened two days ago where wewere looking at a blood drive that happened
at a local church, and I'mhoping I know Pastor Rod at the church.
I'm going to give him a callto see that their donation process was
successfull. They had a great blooddrive this week. All right, we're

(29:26):
going to get back to the musicnow. And what I would like to
do is something that I call aheadset. This is where three songs are
played back to back to back. And I try to remind people I do
this because if you got headsets, wear them, because the music is just
so much more immersive when you do. And I will play for you three

(29:48):
songs that typically have to do withan artist, an album, some event
or person that kind of ties thosethree songs together. Too often, unfortunately,
we do headsets on the passing ofan artist, and today is no
exception. Last week, the artistsix Too Rodriguez, mostly known commonly as

(30:10):
Rodriguez, passed away. And whathe was really known for was a twenty
twelve Academy Award winning documentary called Searchingfor Sugarman, and this told his story,
and that story is that he wasan artist in Detroit, recorded an
album to very little fanfare or acknowledgement, and then he basically slipped away into

(30:34):
obscurity. What he didn't know wasthat a bootleg copy of his album made
it down to South Africa and wasa huge hit, and he almost had
status down in South Africa of anElvis Presley. He was that big.
The filmmakers found him and a bigpart of that documentary was exposing to Rodriguez

(30:57):
that he, in fact had achievedthe artem that so many rockers wanted to
achieve. That documentary in twenty twelvewas amazing Searching for Sugarman. It also
brought Rodriguez back into the real worldin terms of being a touring musician.
I saw him perform at the GreekAuditorium around twenty thirteen, twenty fourteen.

(31:18):
It was a great show. Iremember even then though helpers and handlers guiding
him out to his microphone on thestage, he really gave the oppression of
being a very, very frail man. Well last week six too, Rodriguez
did pass away, but what heleaves behind is a tremendous music legacy.
And we're gonna play three songs rightnow off of Well. We're gonna play

(31:44):
one song off the Searching for Sugarmanalbum. It's called street Boy. That's
the first song we're gonna play, and then we're gonna play two other songs
off his album Cold Fact. Oneis called I Wonder and the final one
is called Sugarman, which, ofcourse, as I mentioned, is the
connection to Searching for Sugarman. Inthe documentary, So three songs now back

(32:09):
to back to back here on theCoast Highway Shuffle Show, as we honor
the late wonderful artist is known simplyas Rodriguez. Street Boy, you've been

(32:44):
out to the street boy, eachguy of sense to go home. Street
Boy, You're gonna end up.You need some love and understanding. Not
that dead, and I fear aplanet. Street Boy. You go home,

(33:12):
but you can't stay because something's alwayspulling you away. You're fast loves
and quick good byes. You're justa street boy where the street lights in
your eyes. You better get yourselftogether. Look for something better, street

(33:34):
Boy. You're being out to thestreet boy, each kind the sense to
go home? The street Boy,You're gonna end up alone. You need
some love and understanding. Not thatDeadn't like your planet, street Boy.

(34:00):
Your sister says that ever week, you just come home to eat and go
to sleep, and you make plansyou never keep because your mind is always
in the streets. You'd better getyourself together. Love whistled and better.

(34:23):
Street Boy. You've been out tothe street boy. Each guya sense to
go home? Street Boy, You'regonna end up alone. You need some
love and understanding, not that dead, and live your planet. Street boy.

(35:09):
There's one last word, then I'llconclude, before you pick up and
put on your gratitude. But you'llnever find or have a meet any street
boy who's ever been the streets thestreet boy, street boy, street boy,

(35:42):
street boy, street boy, streetboy, sweet boy. I wonder

(36:28):
how many times you've been had AndI wonder how many plans have gone bad?
I wonder how many times you hadsex? And I wonder do you
know who be next? I wonder, I wonder what do I do?

(37:00):
I wonder about the love you can'tfind, and I wonder about the lord
of this that's mine. I wonder, I let's go in and have your
guard. And I wonder about yourfriends, and I not, I wonder,
I wonder, wonder I do.I wonder about the tears and tarantis,

wants me, tell her be theretill I can d back over here.

(01:09:59):
I don't make us say I gotso, I got a heart so sicking

(01:10:21):

where she will? And she saystoo that she don't love me, Just

(01:10:44):
give her my message, tell hermy bread, how Lord, if I
can have back, I would nevermake her sid I got so I got

(01:11:39):
all right? That was Chris Isaacwith Heartful of Soul. If you recognize
that song that goes all the wayback to nineteen sixty five from the Yardbirds,
so it's a great cover. Beforethat, you heard Bob Scags from
his album Sometime and next we're goingto go in a different action. I'm

(01:12:00):
we're gonna play something that I don'tthink you've heard I came across the song
just recently. We always like tobring in some some new tunes to add
to the mix. So let's listento suck. Let's listen to bones Owens
playing lightning strikes. Let's my soul, tell me star coming in with the

(01:12:53):
shame skin. He was him witha little stack. He got y'all through
trying to show y'all wheel. She'sa tagget pill. She used a jacket,
hill hill down. If he don'tjust keep him on with the windows
a wrong, it's all right alone. They win a light now shame light

(01:13:24):
now, shame ain't long pow andthey ain't all right an down. It's
the hardest thing. Cut y'all throattrying to kill y'all wheel. She's a

(01:13:45):
tagget pill. She used a taggetpill. She used to tagget. Then
he don't he don't just keep himon with the wind on the blue be
so wrong. It's all right alone. I'll be winning all the right.

(01:14:06):
Shame, lay down, shame. When you're coming, when you're coming,
when you're coming, when you callit, when you coming, when you're
coming, when you connor, whenyou call it, when your color,

(01:14:28):
when you comming. Then you cominghere. Damn if you do, Damn
if you don't, just keep onmoving with the wind's gonna blue be.
It's so wrong. It's all right, all that along. I've been winning
all the light. Now shame laydown, shape, Let you do.

(01:14:56):
If you don't does keep on movingwith the wind, don't right? All

(01:15:24):
right? That was bones Owens. That's new to me. I hope you
liked that. It reminded me alot of the Black Keys, and we
play them a lot here on thestation, so that's kind of fun.
Get your juices going early. Nextup, we got something that's going in
another direction. If you're familiar withthe name, Delbert McClinton goes way back
and this is a song has beencovered by a number of people. It's

(01:15:45):
called Honey, Can I Change MyMind? She didn't ban an eye.
As I packed my bag to Lee, I thought she would start to cry.

(01:16:14):
I sit around my room and thegirl she food this time, she
acted like I was the last thingon her man. I would like start
looking baby, Can I change myman? I just want to change my

(01:16:42):
man? As I took those steps, was that open door knowing all the
time? Oh lord, I justmoved, But she didn't give me,

(01:17:05):
not signing nothing that would make mechange my mind. Lord, I would
like to start on again. Pleaseplease, please, Babe, I just

(01:17:28):
changed my mind while playing my gamesmany times before. But people, let

(01:18:05):
me tell y'all, Oh, I'llnever reach the door when die. I
keep looking back, but my baby'snot in side. I will like start

(01:18:31):
gonna change my mind. I'm sosorry. Baby, Please let me change
my mind. Please please please pleaselet me change my mind. Start all,

(01:18:59):
start all right. Then the legendaryDelbert McClinton with Baby Cannot Change My
Mind. That was originally a RoyBuchanan song, which sounds much different,

(01:19:23):
and then Boz Skaggs covered that andhad a much lower tempo great songs as
Delbert McClinton. He's getting up there. He's in his eighties now, so
that song has been around. Nextup, we're gonna go in another direction
once again. It's always great whenwe can come across new music, especially
when they're local artist. And nextup, we've got Donovan Franken, writer

(01:19:47):
who are local. Friends would referredto him as Donnie, and he's joined
with a Devin Almon, Dwayne Almand'sson to sing this next song. It's
called see It All, and thiswas just released on an eph this year,
so this might be new to you. I hope you like this and

(01:20:08):
it's definitely got the flavor of aDonnie and a Devin sound. So let's
go with see it All here onk x FLM. Never been to Birdie

(01:20:38):
now that have been to witch achild? Just calmly, take my hand.
We're gonna see it at all. We'll leave the day by we're gonna
around to just come and take myhand. We're gonna see it at all.

(01:21:00):
I'm gonna see it at all.I'm gonna see it all. Never

(01:21:20):
going to do nas up night fall. Gonna have to work real hard if
you want to see it at all. About the children served it, how
it busts your ball. Gonna haveto work real hard if you won't see
it at all. I'm gonna seeit all, gonna see it all.

(01:22:13):
I don't care where you go.You can make the call. Don't have
to go too far if you wantto see it at all. I'm gonna
see it all. I'm gonna seeit all. I'm gonna see at all.

(01:22:54):
Don't see it all all right? That was Devin Almond along with Donovan

(01:23:56):
Frankenrider, and we're gonna see itall all. It's great when Donnie.
I'm sorry about that, so Iwas about to say, it's a great
when we see Donnie in town.I saw him just recently. We're gonna
We're gonna move on. And thenext song is called move On, and

(01:24:17):
it's by our good friend Beth Wimmer. And Beth left Los Angeles years ago
to go and start a career inSwitzerland and it's been going great. She
loves it over there. This nextsong is called move On. We played
another song of hers earlier on anothershow, so we're gonna feature her for
the second time. And this isBeth Wimmer from Switzerland. Let's move on.

(01:24:48):
You think you've got me say hereand all? Do you think along
to go in alone? You've beenaround the world before you met me,

(01:25:14):
and I haven't been anywhere. Andthere's so much to see. I'm not
saying it's your phone. There arethings that I laugh. You didn't get
to me money, but you're botherbe back. I got your momma,
momm a bat, you made it. I got to say a lot,

(01:25:41):
say long, I can't stay hereanther day you say it's comfortable, you
want me to stay, You sayyou'll take care of me. But I
got to find myself. Ol Way. My heart is hurting, baby,

(01:26:10):
but I got to be free andI will come back to you if it's
meant to be. It ain't nothingyou done. It's just things that I
left. You've been good to me, honey, but you're on me back.
I got to move on, moveon without your baby. I got

(01:26:40):
to say long, I can't stayanother day. I got to find myself
and if one ever without your baby, I got to spread my wings.
Don't mean but too real things.I got to move on. Maybe something

(01:27:08):
I'll find, But I got somepiece of my line that will come.
Look for you put until I don'tyou done? It just wants that la.

(01:28:01):
You didn't get to me, honey, but you won't be back.
I got to prove on my momto that you way. I got to
say along, I can't stay theday. I got to by myself and

(01:28:27):
everyone else that you may. Igot to spring my wings, do guarantee
things. I got through bone.I got to the bone. I got
to I got to I got you, I got to lone, I got

(01:28:51):
me, I got you all right, Beth, thank you for that,

(01:29:24):
enjoyed that to move on from herLive within, live without? I think
let's live within and live without, all right, Beth, I hope you're
enjoying your time over there. We'regonna move along. We're gonna play something
from the legendary Bill Withers, whomost of you would know, or ain't
no sunshine or lean on me,but we're gonna play. Grandma's hands here

(01:29:47):
on Sunday morning, because it's agood Sunday morning. Mmmmmm. Grandma's hands

(01:30:08):
leapt in church on Sunday morning.Grandma's hand play the tambourines so well.
Grandma's hand used to issue out ofwarning. She'd see, Billy, don't
you run so fast? Might fallon a piece of glass, might be

(01:30:30):
snake staring that dress. Grandma's hand. Grandma's hand soothe the local londonwd brother.
Grandma's hand used to hate sometimes andswear. Grandma's hand used to lift

(01:30:53):
the face and tell us. She'dsee, maybe Grandma understands that you really
love that man. Put yourself inJesus hands, Grandma's saying. Grandma's hands
used to hand me piece a candy. Grandma's hand pick me up each time

(01:31:19):
I fell. Grandma's hand. Boy, it really came and a handy,
she'd say. And I say, don't you whip that boy? But you
wanna spank him for he didn't dropno apple cores. But I don't have
Grandma anymore. If I get toHeaven out of four Grandma's Okay. That

(01:31:59):
was Bill Withers, and that wasa good song for this morning. Let's
then that one out to Helen.Yeah, we're gonna move on. We're
gonna move on to a song thatI love playing. I think I've played
this song a couple of times onair. It's Cannonball Adderley and this is
Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. Thiscame out back in the mid sixties,

(01:32:23):
and then it was later followed bya song by the Buckinghams, who put
lyrics to the song. And I'mgoing to ask you at the end of
the song, which room would yourather be in if you were going to
hear this song? Would you ratherhear it by a Cannonball Adderley or the
Buckinghams? And I think I knowthe answer. You're listening to k XFM

(01:32:43):
here from the Pearl Street Studios andLaguna beach. Thanks for tuning in.
Let's listen to Cannonball. You know, sometimes we're not prepared for adversity when
it happened. Sometimes we're caught short. We don't know exactly how to handle

(01:33:04):
it when it comes up. Sometimeswe don't know just what's to do when
adversity takes over. And I haveadvice for all of us. I've got
it from our pianist, Joe's Avinu, who wrote this tone, and it

(01:33:24):
sounds like what you're supposed to saywhen you have that kind of problem.
It's called mercy, Mercy, mercy. I why ye now nicely? Must

(01:37:50):
fly lest f nicely? Thank you? Oh I love that feet up.
So that was Cannonball, Aderlie.I mentioned the Buckinghams, and just for
fun here on my first day,I'm gonna experiment with something and we're gonna
just play a little bit of thatsame song, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

(01:38:13):
by the Buckinghams. Let's let's trythis right from the start, fall the

(01:38:36):

(01:43:00):
Buckingham's playing mercy, mercy, mercy, But that was kid Charlemagne by Steely

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
